The Dog with the Flute in its Mouth negotiates heritage and the new life it takes on in the space of absence. The collection follows the journey of the narrator, the child and the Dog with the Flute in its Mouth as they search for the sound of a name and a way to return home. It represents a deep love that both creates and bears witness.
Emily Anna King (锡萍芳) is a recent alum of University College Cork’s Creative Writing graduate program in Ireland. She currently teaches creative writing and English at Wilbraham and Monson Academy in Western Massachusetts. Her most recent publications are found in Tír na nÓg, Massachusetts Best Emerging Poets 2019 (Z Publishing), Pamplemousse, Lily Poetry Review, Paragon Press, and Otherwise Engaged Journal.
While her work often explores the Chinese American adoptee experience, she is also passionate about the intersectionality between The Dog with the Flute in its Mouth negotiates heritage and the new life it takes on in the space of absence. The collection follows the journey of the narrator, the child and the Dog with the Flute in its Mouth as they search for the sound of a name and a way to return home. PRAISE FOR The Dog with the Flute in its Mouth by Emily Anna King 锡萍芳
The Dog with the Flute in its Mouth spans continents and is both grounded and threaded together with the influences of cultures from east to west. Musical metaphors help the reader experience King’s search for a truth that is desperate to be felt, yet by its very nature will never be afforded an opportunity to truly be known. In doing so, we are unwittingly guided toward a beautiful and thoughtful study of humanity that gives us pause to think of our own stories and how they have influenced every aspect of our lives. Describing the indescribably, giving shape and form to that which can never be constrained by such things, culminates in a passionate vision to be cradled in a love so profound that it becomes a reality as real and as true as anything in this life or any other. Such is the experience of sitting with The Dog with the Flute in its Mouth, an enormous, cathartic and life affirming piece that touches the heart and the mind and questions the validity of building a reality of one’s own when the reality of others is forever shrouded in a quiet darkness determined to forever be obscured.
–Howard Odentz is the author of several young adult and emerging adult novels, novellas and short stories that explore the desperation, horror, and sometimes humor, of those trapped in frightening situations while sitting on the cusp of an adulthood that is just out of reach.

Grace, who struggles with depression, thinks she’s safe … until (more…)

“Carving Grace” accepted for WICKED CREATURES anthology!
Woman with Roses, a ship figurehead from the permanent collection at Mystic Seaport. It is believed to be a likeness of Belva Lockwood, a women’s rights advocate who did too many important things to list them all here. Of all the figureheads I saw in the exhibit, this one reminded me the most of the creatures in “Carving Grace.” I’m thrilled to announce that my short story, “Carving Grace”—about…

My first full-length narration, Howard Odentz’s “What We Kill” is available now! 70 hours of listening to my own voice in a small room has finally paid off. I LOVED reading this story. Anyone who’s been through high school will surely see a bit of themselves in each of the four main characters, and their terrifying suburban adventure is a real thrill ride.
