Propaganda why Aelin Ashryver Galathynius is insufferable:

Your basic Mary Sue. Styled as the incredibly cool best-assassin in the land at only 18, she nevertheless is constantly snuck up upon, distracted by pretty boys, and possesses not an ounce of wit. In a competition between murderers and thieves to win a place as the King's Champion, she sees a bag of chocolates on her bed that she didn't put there and immediately starts eating it and gushing about how much she adores chocolate - nevermind that they just had a trial involving poison, which several of her competitors are adept at. She's always right, and other characters exist just to tell her how awesome and beautiful and wonderful she is. And then she turns out to be a super special magical fey princess!

I generally don't believe that a Mary Sue is a bad thing, but the only thing I remember about this book was how she had been in prison for years but was super young but was also still the most super-specialest assassin. And she kept reading when she should have been training or sleeping. Like, girl, this is not final exams where you can stay up all night and then roll into class in your pajamas and still squeak out a C. It's supposed to be life and death. Her character traits didn't make her relatable, they made her a moron

Thank you so much for this ask! I'm actually so sorry it has taken me this long to answer, but I am my own worst critic and couldn't come up with an answer until now that I was satisfied with. I'm still not totally satisfied with this, but I'd rather just rip off the bandaid with this at this point so it's not proofread or anything. Enjoy!

Icy was once the second princess of Dyamond. Her childhood was pretty normal by princess standards until she was 7, when a cataclysmic magical storm swept through the world and destroyed everything and everyone in its path, leaving only her. 

While stumbling around the ruins of her castle, she came across Mandragora. Icy panicked and shot a magic blast at Mandragora which she very easily deflected. There was a silent stand-off for a while between the two while the Ancestral Witches debated on what to do about the situation, shocked that anyone had been able to survive their storm, much less a child. Tharma thought they should just kill Icy, tying up their loose end, and be done with it. Belladonna believed they could use Icy to get what they needed and then they could leave her to die. Liliss pointed out that the only pawn they had was Mandragora who was in fact a known war criminal and that having a pawn so young, impressionable and unrelated to them could prove to be useful. Tharma got outvoted and it was decided that Icy could live. 

It was explained to Icy (in child terms) that Mandragora was trying to find the person who caused the storm and that if Icy came with them and followed the Witches’ orders they would help her get revenge. They generally exploited the fact that Icy was a child in an extremely vulnerable emotional state. Icy agreed and picked up witchcraft without too much trouble, meeting Darcy and Stormy years down the line when she was 13 and 14 respectively. 

Icy’s magic is incredibly strong, with her having the most experience and the one with the strongest negative feelings backing it as well as a lot of one on one training from the Ancestral Witches.

In terms of her role in the group, she’s the leader. She always has a plan and can keep her cool in nearly any situation in spite of her temper. While she wasn’t much like this as a child, Icy has grown to be incredibly cold and ruthless. She genuinely cares about her sisters, but if she needed to sacrifice them to achieve her goals and couldn’t find another way, she would do it. Beyond her sisters, she doesn’t really care for anyone and usually only keeps them around for as useful as they can be to her. Between her and her only, she’s got really bad attachment issues and kinda clings to people like life rafts. 

Icy is the only one of the Trix that knew anything about Darkar before he gets his big reveal, though she only really knew that he was more powerful than the Ancestral Witches.

I'm also debating as of right now whether I should make Icy have albinism.

Darcy was the middle child of the wealthy D’Arcy family on Fallot. She spent most of her childhood being routinely ignored and disregarded and learned to use this to her advantage. She taught herself how subtly manipulate people and blend into the background even more allowing her to get away with a lot of questionable things. Eventually she picked up witchcraft and found she had quite the affinity for it (repressed feelings of loneliness and anger helped immensely with that), and spent a lot more of her time practising it growing to be quite proficient for someone her age. Her family found out and, with witch discrimination running rampant across the Magic Dimension (in spite of Griffin’s best efforts), her family forced her to give it up. Darcy naturally didn’t take too kindly to this and made the choice to leave at the age of 12. Her family didn’t notice for nearly 2 days. 

Darcy went around a month before she met Icy and very quickly convinced her that she should be allowed to join. Mandragora was not happy to have to keep an eye on another child but relented after Liliss claimed that Darcy could prove to be a powerful witch if given the right push.

In terms of her relationship with the rest of the group, Darcy is the one with the spellbook. She is incredibly people-smart and intuitive. She has trained herself to be able to sense others’ magic in both strength and type allowing her to pick up large advantages in battles when it comes to bluffing, though she has never been one to like actual combat. Darcy prefers manipulating her target or distracting them with her illusions and isn’t that good at taking a direct hit. She also tends to panic in high-stress situations or when things don’t go immediately right resulting in her overthinking. Darcy is also a horrible actor in spite of her incredible manipulation and lying skills thanks to her tendency to panic. 

Darcy genuinely looks up to both Icy and Stormy. On bad days she’s convinced that they could do everything without her and if she didn’t push herself constantly to keep up they would drop her. The rational side of her knows this simply isn’t true, they’re sisters and all bring something special and important to the coven, but the lingering thought eats at her. She’s terrified of being alone, unseen and unheard again.

Stormy was kind of a fucked up kid. She wasn’t evil ya know but it was that whole situation of looking after a “problem child” and just giving up on them because they’re struggling in a way adults don’t understand and lashing out. Eventually, after years of this treatment, Stormy had given up on the adults in her life and decided to strike out on her own at the ripe old age of 10. She was on her own for 3 years, travelling across the magic dimension, when, at 13, she encountered Darcy and Icy. She demanded to join their duo and the two were immediately against it, thinking she would only be a detriment to them and that they were far better off as two. Stormy started following them around in spite of their refusal and after they got into a bit of a pickle, she saved their lives. Icy and Darcy persuaded Mandragora to let Stormy stick with them, believing that Mandragora relented because of their expert convincing skills, though in all actuality it was due to Tharma taking an immediate liking to Stormy’s chaotic attitude.

Stormy, when Icy and Darcy first met her, gave off the impression of the character who’s the comedy relief with a dark secret, except she doesn’t really keep the dark parts a secret. Stormy was the first of the group to kill someone and she did it before she even joined them. She made money mostly by beating people up and stealing it, though when she wasn’t in the mood for a fight she would instead dance and entertain along busy streets. She ended up being quite the dancer, even making money off challenging professionals.

Stormy is the most adaptable of the group and tends to be able to go with the flow incredibly well thanks to how quickly she had to adapt and learn as a child. She’s the tank of the group, coming in with maybe not the most precise attacks but definitely the most deadly and destructive, and definitely doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty and fighting without magic. Out of all 3 of the girls, Stormy has the most magical stamina from all the intense dancing workouts she does nearly daily. This workout can get on the other girls’ nerves since she does it at all hours, but since it makes Stormy happy and ensures their heavy-hitter can continue beating the shit out of people they don’t bother her about it.

Stormy is incredibly confident in herself and words rarely ever hurt. She has no problem hurting others if she thinks it’ll be fun, though she struggles to find that point in which things have gone too far which can often lead to things blowing up in her face. This can happen with the Trix too, Stormy pulling a prank that she takes too far and She doesn’t have a lot of clear memories left from her childhood before being on the road and joining the Trix, however she can still remember how it felt before she ran. Over the years Stormy has grown very apathetic towards things, only really caring if she can cause chaos in some way, though her temper has not improved since she was young and continues to be very short. While a short temper isn't usually great, Stormy actually couldn't perform any strong magic without it since witchcraft relies so heavily on negative feelings.

Also, their names weren't originally Icy, Darcy and Stormy but their old names aren't really of relevance so I'm not including them. Just figured that was worth clarifying.

Return Part 2/2

After having to go and wake up Princess Luna from her nap, we then met up with Princess Celestia and had that meeting. I had to tell the two a big lie about how me and the Cobalt Rush met through a tear in time and space since they didn't need to know about my and the cursed mare's adventure. I was able to convince the princesses that the stallion wasn't a threat to the kingdom. Though, the night princess did want to have a talk with the hybrid pony later. As for Cozy Glow, the pegasus filly had left for her room before the meeting, with the souvenir I had gotten for her.

"That was eventful," said Cobalt Rush.

I nodded in agreement. "It certainly was," I said.

Right now, we had arrived at the Training Area.

"Well, it's time for you to meet the others," I said. I then took a deep breath. "Everyone, stop what you're doing now!"

That got everyone's attention.

"What is it, your majesty?" asked Patchwork.

Seeing as I had everyone's attention, I directed a hoof at the hybrid pony. "Everyone, I would like you all to meet the newest recruit into the Eclipse Guards, Cobalt Rush. He'll be joining us starting today," I introduced. I pointed a hoof at each of them. "Cobalt Rush, meet Patchwork, Gilda, Starry Dream, and Lime Strike."

They each had given off their own greeting in response once each of their names were called out. The female griffin was there because in the letter, I told her that she can get paid for being one of my guards. Gilda had then packed up her stuff and headed for Equestria. I helped her find an apartment room just like with the hybrid pony.

"Now then, Cobalt Rush. Patchwork will be your sparring partner," I said. I looked at both Cobalt Rush and the patchwork pony. "If you're both okay with that, I mean."

He nodded. "Of course, your majesty," said Patchwork.

"It'd be interesting to fight against somepony like them," said the hybrid pony.

I smiled. "Great. Take your positions, you two," I said.

The two of them trotted out onto a spacious field across from one another, staring down at each other, waiting to make the first move.

"And...go!" I exclaimed.

The two ponies galloped towards each other.

Hey! AP Bio is a good and cute show and I won't stand for the Jack Griffin slander because he actually had an interesting role that had more to it than just Dennis Reynolds Mid West Teacher Era! It was not a shitty show! It just never took off the way it should've and I'm gonna blame NBC for doing their best to kill it by cancelling it off Hulu and reviving it on fucking Peacock of all places. And then they cancelled it again in 2021 without the decency to warn them in advance to allow the writers to actually find a resolution.

But in all seriousness though, I do know what you mean... When they announced the Velma show, I figured Sam Richardson and Constance Wu are accomplished actors who've been in some good stuff, and the rest of the cast was stacked as shit, the writers Charlie Grandy and Mindy Kaling have made a lot of hit shows that have turned out mostly popular and successful and people generally like them and HBO Max is kind of a Serious Deal, so Glenn would finally get to have another good thing going on as a side project now that AP Bio is over. And he's always doing voices on the podcast and on Sunny itself, and I've seen clips from Unsupervised and a couple of others shows where he more fully disappears into his weird voices, so I thought this could be a cool opportunity for him if the show becomes successful. And then it turns out like this :(

Now I'm almost a little worried for Charlie's upcoming movie because I know Glenn's going to be in it for a scene or two. I hope it's not cursed!

Fingers crossed the Canadian movie he made last year about Blackberry turns out to be good. I've only heard good things about the director's previous movies (not that I've watched any of them), and I recognize Jay Baruchel and Cary Elwes from How To Train Your Dragon and The Princess Bride respectively, so I know they are capable of good taste, but with Glenn's rotten luck, this had better not turn out to be this director's first bad or mid film.

do you think glenn subconsciously chooses shitty outside projects on purpose? like if he ever did deign to sit down in therapist’s office would the therapist immediately clock that glenn, despite being a wealth of talent and potential, has a strange pattern of electing to take on roles in subpar or unsuccessful projects which conveniently allow him to center sunny in his life and career forever and ever despite his constant joking that he’s trying to “get out”?

A Fair-est Winter - Apple/Darling

This is my gift as part of the @eah-exchange, written for @atomicjuniper!

Hey Kaitie! I also love Dappling and Dexven, so I wrote a fic featuring them. Apple-centric! It’s primarily more on the Dappling side, with some Raven and Apple friendship, though it’s originally based on your prompt of the two ships going on a double date. Here, they’re visiting Snow White’s kingdom for Christmas.

Snow fell into the December days, as finals ended and trails of students boarded the carriage cars and trains and portals and private planes and professionally-trained griffins home for the winter. Apple White would normally be one of the first to go, for the current Snow White, in her queenly CEO-frequent-face-of-Faerbes-magazine glory, would never hesitate to make a grand entrance, to remind the students that -- yes, you may be royalty, but the realm this school falls in is still under my jurisdiction, that as long as you study here, Apple is your Crown Princess. Yet, this year, Apple sat waiting on the school steps, suitcases beside, as people filed out past her.

“Stuck on the steps of the palace?” Ashlynn Ella trailed down from the front door past Apple.

She laughed. “Just waiting on a princess.”

It wasn’t that Darling Charming was late. Apple White was merely early, and hexceedingly nervous.

“Is everything spelltacular on your end, Ash?”

With that, Cinderella’s daughter smiled. “The court physicians have hexcellent news. Mama’s been doing her best in months… we might even get to do a trip this year, she mentioned wanting to go east of the sun.”

“They do throw some of the best balls,” Apple said. “Of course any Cinderella would love to go there!”

Ashlynn giggled. “And Papa knows of Hunter now, so things are looking up all round.”

They kept talking, passing the time until a carriage car managed by a mousy-looking footsman rolled up in Ever After High’s arched driveway.

Cinderella stories, rags to riches. Happily ever afters do hexist, Apple thought, and her mind drifted. Commoners, and even minor nobility, had a freedom in taking a highschool sweetheart to their parents, without much of a fuss. It wasn’t as if the royal teens of Ever After High didn’t date outside of the storybook, it was just that bringing it to the palace was a political move at the most minimum.

It was also why Snow White tardied this year.

Nonetheless, a new page was turning. Ashlynn and Hunter were proof. Maybe she and Darling would be too.

As if on cue, a rush of distinctive perfume and strident footsteps. There she was, Darling herself, carrying not one, not two, but three suitcases, on her arms.

“That’s just flexing at this point!” The sentence was said with a good-natured laugh that Apple knew to be her roommate’s. Raven Queen stood behind Darling, and Dexter behind her. “She insisted, Apple, how could I say no?”

With her own demonstration, Raven waved her hands and moved the suitcases down the steps via purple telekinesis. 

There was the other reason why Snow White tardied that year -- the other set of guests.

Apple adored Raven. They were roommates, best friends, walked hand in hand to Thronecoming together. When Raven shot up in the popularity polls, the only concern Apple ever felt was from that call with her mother. Still, befriend your storybook villain all you want at Ever After, risk the judgement of your peers for that, perhaps -- not that Apple was prone to being demonised --, but bringing it back to the kingdom, where you were the figurehead, the fairytale--

She was overthinking things. Apple knew she was overthinking things. Her mother had said yes to guests over for the Winter, anyway, and yes to these specific ones, too.

To be fairest, it was hard to say no to that one particular Charming branch without risking a political infarction. A queen has trade routes to protect!

“Dexter,” Apple greeted, standing up and giving a proper curtsy. He was nice. Respectful. It never sunk in before that she’d one day get to call him her brother-in-law, but after everything with Darling, it finally did.

“Hey Apple.”

To Raven, Apple dove into her with a warm hug. “Christmas is going to be the best,” she emphasised. “I know it.”

“Would be nice not to get threats from Krampus this year,” Raven cracked a grin.

“Nonsense, does coal from Santa mean nothing to you?”

But when you’re the Evil Queen, here are visits that even St Nick is all too earnest to miss.

The odd couple -- prince and sorceress -- stepped aside. Only one person was left for Apple to properly greet.

“Darling,” and here, Apple was acutely aware of the weight of that name, the endearment intertwined in double-meaning. She reached out a hand. Her destined princess took it, kissed the back of it, beaming like the sun glinting off armor.

This was it, wasn’t it? The fairytale love that maidens go to the ends of the world for.

The D-Charming branch really undersold Dexter. He would make an incredible dignitary. He held the conversation with Apple’s mother that carriage car ride. CEO does not necessitate engineer, but Snow White’s mines sourced power for some of the latest advancements in spelletronics, which Dex -- fond member of the Tech Club -- could talk on.

He took the pressure off. The girls could chat about next spellmester plans, with Apple and Darling comparing their lunch slots and free periods to determine when they could hang out during school.

Still, there was a coldness, not from the winter outside. If Snow White wanted to know about Raven, the question was directed at either Apple or Dexter, or otherwise…

“Well, what will you do for the rest of your life?” articulated with a saccharine smile.

For any princess, it was simple enough: rule, and rule well. Else, be a consort, run the kingdom, so that your spouse rules well.

“Isn’t that what the rest of my life is for?” Raven had responded with an ease that Apple realised she herself would never have had if put in the same situation.

Arriving to the kingdom, too, the atmosphere of the crowds shifted from whence Dexter and Darling stepped out, to when Raven stepped out. Apple clenched her perfect teeth and thought how Ever After High had created a mental microcosm, that returning home would not reflect the popularity polls at school.

“I don’t like how they’re treating you,” Apple said. She waited until the servants had finished moving her friends’ belongings into guest rooms, so it was just the two of them.

“It is what it is… not that it should be, but hey. I thought you preferred me as your evil queen.”

She frowned. “You already poisoned me!”

“Not on purpose.”

“But it got me here, got my Happily Ever After… I don’t know why they don’t love you now. I’m happy, isn’t that what matters?”

Raven laughed. Of all things, Raven laughed.

“There’s no story without you! There’s no Happily Ever After without a story…”

“Look, Apple, I appreciate you. I’m really happy for you. That’s why I’m here,” Raven said. “And hey, raised villain, remember? We don’t get safety nets, we know the risks. It’s not like I’m throne for a loop here.”

If she had been assigned a villain role -- Apple once thought -- then she’d take it with a strident pride, put on the facade, get a beautiful princess a happily ever after. “It’s more than just a role, isn’t it?”

“Yeah. It’s very real, and it needs to be fixed. And maybe, hey, on the bright side, if evil were just a role, wouldn’t fairytale love be just a role as well?”

“Good thing it isn’t.”

“I agree.”

“Well,” Darling said, “Snow White’s kingdom is a lot more Christmassy than ours, which is to be hexpected. This is famously one of the biggest Christmas markets in the world.”

“Rivalled by only the Nutcracker Kingdom’s,” the hint of kingdom pride didn’t leave Apple’s voice. 

The apex of the trip. 

A princess had to be resourceful, and on a night where one was busy stuffing herself with German desserts, Apple would never be caught amiss without a bag to carry them all.

She introduced Darling to all the sweets from her childhood. “Other kingdoms are mad about oranges,” she made sure to point out any regional differences, “but if you ever doubted that the Snow White kingdom would value any other fruit over apples…”

As a kid was a phrase that fell often as the two wandered. This was the stall I went to as a kid. Oh, I played this as a kid. They're singing the songs that I heard as a kid.

“Nothing seems to change, huh,” commented Darling.

“It's reliable,” said Apple. “It's home.” She glanced up at her girlfriend. “This time it's different, though, it's with you. Oo!” A stall caught her eye. “Let's get lebkuchen!" and took Darling over to a stand selling gingerbread.

Nothing seemed to change. But now, with Darling in her life--

“Let's do something unhexpected.”

“Unhexpected?”

“Unhexpected. I showed you my childhood traditions, maybe we should create a new one.”

“Wonderland taught me that you should think of six impossible things before breakfast…” Darling trailed off, fuzzling her brow in thought, “but something unhexpected right now?”

“Oo, maybe I should suggest the unhexpected thing! That'd be extra unhexpected, coming from Apple White.”

A chuckle. “Alright, what have you got?”

Apple frowned, and looked around. This out of the box thinking was not her strongest suit. "Let's…" she said, "climb onto a roof, maybe?" Briar would be proud, she thought.

Darling arched an eyebrow, but didn't question it. "Gotta start somewhere. Let's do it."

So they did. Fittingly, it was a local bakery's roof. The two princesses sat there and watched the lights of the market below them.

"Did you…," Darling seemed to be searching for the words. "Did you ever think we'd end up like this?"

Apple looked up at her, mid lebkuchen bite.

"It's just that, well, you know, my family's… traditional," Darling continued. "Like, not necessarily by the book, or else they'd be doing something different. More like 'Chevalier Belle-Belle is an hexception, not a rule!' traditional? Authors, what am I getting at?"

"Darling, what's going on?"

The other princess laughed and kissed Apple on the cheek. "It's just that, I feel like I've been spending the past months rejecting the way I've been raised so much that, surely, maybe it would affect how I like princesses. Like, scared that associations would mean not being able to fully love princesses that fit the mould. I was scared that I wouldn't like you as much as I wanted to -- or do."

"And I'm certain that you do." And Apple was. "I like being a proper princess," she said. "And I like you, Darling. You make me feel like the storybooks were right, that there is a love to believe in and wait for."

Below them, there were voices in unison from the market crowd. A countdown.

Apple rested her head on Darling's shoulder. "Stollen?" she offered the Christmas loaf to her love. 

Darling broke off a chunk. "Stollen," she repeated. 

Together, from the height, they watched the fireworks.

The days stretched onwards, and Apple lost herself in countless hours spent with Darling. Exploring the vast private library collections her kingdom held, to sitting on meetings her mother held with other heads of states or company hexecutives, to wandering the orchards that lined the Royal Botanical Gardens.

They drank hot chocolate indoors and watched the snowflakes fall through ebony-lined windows.

But like reigns, seasons too come to an end, and Darling had to hasten home to spend the last week of break with her own family. 

Apple stood at the steps of her kingdom, and waved goodbye to the two siblings, in the practised and poised manner she only knew.

“Hey,” Darling sprinted back. “I forgot something.”

“What w--”

With a wave of her hair, Darling slowed the time around her, and caught Apple’s mouth with a kiss. “That’s what I forgot.”

The Charmings’ carriage car beeped, a frustrated footsman knowing that the children were not going to make it back on scheduled time. 

"Okay, gotta go. Remember that I love you!"

"I love you too."

She’d go to the ends of the world for Darling. She really would. Be one of those princesses who spend seven years, dedicated, searching.

What comfort, Apple thought, being only a border and a carriage car ride away.

Way of the Witcher: bits of lore

Disclaimer:  Post contains spoilers to the Witcher games These things may be canon-typical, but the following trigger warnings apply if you want to check out the cards: gore, monster dismemberment, needles, body horror, insects and spiders

“In a world plagued by horrors and monstrosities humanity desperately needed a new type of weapon to turn back the tide. Created by ingenious Alzur, witchers — professional monster slayers of exceptional strength, speed, and agility were tasked to end the threat once and for all. Organized into different schools they honed their craft and passed their knowledge onto novices in training. Some of them were destined to become the legendary heroes and protectors of humanity. Others — the very thing they were supposed to fight…”

Since the gwent expansion was anounced I followed it with rapt attention; every bit of lore is a gem in my eyes. I decided to write down my thoughts of the cards and lore pieces revealed in a post. Share that knowledge around, amirite?

The post references Gwent cards which were leaked (2020 november-december). The theme is mutation and everything that comes with it; namely sweet-sweet lore of the lesser known witcher schools: the Bears, Cats, Vipers and Griffins.

We’re starting with a theme, then work our way throught the 4 schools (each contain the following:  a leader, a mentor, an adept, a general witcher, a specific job, an item, a school relevant monster, 2  known witchers and a location), then go through a Witcher 1 throwback, Salamandra, and round it with a few new monsters and neutral cards.

The theme is mutation - be it monsters created by transmutation, witchers or salamadra

If that is true, there are monster cards that seemingly stand out: the Succubus and the Phooca

If we are to believe that they do connect to the mutation theme, then

(1) we can conclude that Phoocas (a rare, and more dangerous form of Nekkers; they can pull your head off by sheer force, watch out) are a natural mutation of the original species,

(2) but we’re still left with the Succubi (an inherently demonic creature). They might have chosen it because of its appearance: succubi have horns and goat-like legs. (Note: in the graphic novel “House of Glass” the succubus character has wings, but lacks hooves. In that sense, she could be mutated.)

Breaking it down into factions/schools (some of the cards can be paired up; these cards are interpreted together):

School of the Viper: starting with the vipers, because they are my favourite

Viper Witcher Mentor & Viper Witcher Adept: the flavour text says that the Viper mentors are exceptionally cold and ruthless, and that’s underlined by the story the art tells: the mentor busies himself with sharpening a blade, and in the background we can see the adept attempting to kill his best friend goat, as was ordered. The mentor watches this from the corner of his eye. Young Vipers are to kill their pets (which they nurtured for years) before becoming a fully-fledged witcher. The latter could mean that the boy depicted on the card hasn’t even gone through the Trial of Grasses.

Viper Witcher: On the card we see an unknown Viper crouching over a royalty he killed. I feel like this type of card is meant to represent what we think a general Witcher of said school would be like. Apparently Vipers just like to slay the nobility *shrug*. The flavour text informs us, that Vipers call their two swords “fangs”, and that their style consists of fast and furious attack aimed to overwhelm the enemy.

Viper Witcher Alchemist: Every school has a specialty; Vipers are proficient in potion or poison making. The right side of the alchemist’s face seems to have healed burn marks; a blown up concoction might have caused it.

Ivar Evil-Eye: So far there’s little to know about Ivar. He was either the Master of the Viper Keep, or the founder himself (gwent suggests the latter). He’s described as heavily scarred (facial scars suggests burns and slash marks too), and each of them has a terrible story to tell.

Warritt the All-Seeing: Warritt is a (newly introduced) Viper with heavy disfiguration to the upper part of his face: his eyes are sealed shut (possibly by burn marks, though his hair remains intact). The art shows Warritt drawing a modified version of the Supirre sign in the air to help with his loss of sight. As the wiki says: “Supirre is a Sign used for eavesdropping. Drawn on a solid surface, it allows the people near this surface to listen nearby conversations which would be normally inaudible due to the distance or background noise.” It was only used in Sapkowsky’s second volume of the Hussite trilogy (not yet translated to English), which is entirely separate from the Witcher novels.

Kolgrim: Fate laughed at this Viper. As a kid he was swapped by a weeper, saved by a witcher, than rejected by his own mother who believed that the fake child was the real one. Later, as a grown witcher Ivar instructed him to find a lost weapon diagram. On his journey he was accused - ironically - in White Orchard of kidnapping a child. Invoking a Temerian law, Kolgrim was told to cleanse their crypt (as seen on the card) then he can go. The truth is revealed in Witcher 3 - Kolgrim was beheaded by the villagers before he could even step into the crypt. To add insult to injury: the child was eaten by a drowner. The gwent card therefore shows the optimistic outcome: that Kolgrim reached the crypt and passed in battle. And what’s up with a crypt full of wraiths anyway? White Orchard is shady, guys. (Lil’ trivia: Kolgrim’s eyes are yellow-green.)

Vypper: Basically an overgrown snake that likes damp marshes (they even fight the local kikimores for territory). They only relate to the mutation theme by their nature - they resemble the “school’s animal”.

Gorthur Gvaed: The Bloodgate Keep is located in the chasms of the Tir Tochair mountains. It’s built so high were you to look down from the bridge leading into the keep, you would only see fog (one could wonder how the vipers trained in these conditions). The bridge is made so that you’d have to cross the lookout tower - it might have served as a check in spot. The post itself is circled by the stone coils of a snake; the top is open and has a huge lit bonfire in the middle for warmth-keeping and possibly signaling. Unluckily, it didn’t stop the Usurper’s army from destroying the keep.

Coated Weapons: They leaned heavily into the alchemy and assassin side of the school. Vipers coat their blades with an acidic liquid, so they can kill a man with a nick of it.

School of the Cat:

Cat Witcher Mentor & Cat Witcher Adept: On the adept card we can see a young Cat walking the tightrope blindfolded (they start with close to the ground and slowly increase the distance with time); the mentor is looking up at him. Like the Vipers, Cat mentors are nonchalant about risking the kids as seen from the flavour text: “If you fall, it’s over. Your nine lives are up, kid.” Furthermore, the background of the Cat Witcher Adept card shows the not yet destroyed Stygga Citadel. The Cat Witcher Mentor is in the same scene and we can see lots of potatoes and cabbages; cats definitely eat their veggies.

Cat Witcher: The card shows a Cat in the heat of battle mid-jump; his hood is up, blood is flying everywhere. The flavour text emphasizes that cats are known for their mad bloodlust, not stopping killing even after the enemy capitulated.

Cat Witcher Saboteur: A Cat perches next to the window, a smoking bomb in hand, eavesdropping on nobles. A rope is hung from somewhere out of the pic, possibly for a quick exit. Vesemir comments that these are many-a deeds the cats did that taint the reputation of witchers.

Gezras of Leyda: Gezras is a not yet known redheaded Cat witcher. Following the pattern he seems to be the founder of the Cat School. His flavour text shows that even back then (when the mutagens made Cats emotionless) they were inclined to dislike humans: “Take a contract from Aen Seidhe over a dh’oine any day, as you’re far less likely to receive a knife between the ribs in place of coin.”

Brehen: Now this cat embodies the Cat madness. He’s known as the Cat of Iello because he massacred everyone there. He was consequently shunned by all the schools, and he was even convinced that Vesemir put a kill order on his head. He met Geralt later in the 1240s on his way to claim the bounty for the princess. Thinking that Geralt was there to rob him of his chance of the bounty, Brehen took a priestess as hostage (this is what we see on the gwent card). Geralt managed to convince him to put away the blade, and they parted without crossing blades. When meeting with the striga he scoffed into her face that “she won’t be his first royal”. But his luck ran out. The Temerians buried him and fabricated the story of a cowardly witcher stealing their coin. I’m halfway convinced we see Brehen in the netflix series.

Gaetan: This boy broke into the fandom like a bulldozer. After the folks in Honorton cheated him of his pay and tried to kill him, Gaetan flew into rage and killed everyone there except Millie, a girl who reminded him of his sister. That’s the scene we see on the card. And then Geralt robs/kills him.

Saber-Tooth Tiger (Stealth): Another huge animal/monster related to the school. It’s story is this: “The prized possession of royal menagerie, until a commando of Scoia’tael assaulted the exhibition, released the beast, and set it upon its cruel masters. Since that day, it has acquired a selective taste for human flesh.” Another cat turning against humans.

Stygga Castle: An outside view of what we already saw on the Cat Witcher Adept card. It’s located on a cliff, and the sun shines into it just right (so that the Cats can bask in the light). The walls form a circle where they shelter the inner grounds, and a bigger tower emerges in the middle. The Castle could be reached by the thin bridge connecting it to the mainland, or by the cliffs (if one is brave enough).

Making a Bomb: Cats seem to have a specialty in bombs. Guess where Lambert got his interest from *winkwink*

School of the Griffin: lots of pairs in this one

Griffin Witcher Mentor & Griffin Witcher Adept: Compared to the other schools, this pairing is tame - the adept is climbing a tree to retrieve a crossbow bolt. We can see the mentor in the background. On the mentor card the adept waves down with the retrieved crossbow bolt in hand. It shows a kind of comradeship that’s not present in the other 3 schools. The flavour text emphasizes the importance of knowledge. Students are afforded to choose their final Trial: recite the entire Liber Tenebrum (Book of Shadows; one of Keldar’s favourite books) or steal a griffin’s egg. Noone’s chosen the former.

Griffin Witcher: The witcher is shown shooting down a griffin. According to the flavour text they prefer hunting with silver-tipped arrowheads instead of swords.

Archgriffin & Griffin Witcher Ranger: On the Griffin Ranger card we see the witcher crouching over track marks. On the archgriffin card he found the albino (or very old) monster, who’s already killed someone (probably a lumberjack, judging by the axe). According to the flavour text, Griffin Witchers are trained to be professional trackers; nothing can stop them to reach their prey. Even though archgriffins are considered the embodiment of courage, loyalty and fighting spirit, the gwent card corrects the notion that the Griffin Witcher were named after the monster. In truth, they got the name in honour of their founder’s mentor, a knight named Gryphon.

Erland of Larvik: Continuing the trend, Erland is the founder of the Griffin School (one of the two that are confirmed 100%). He’s from the first generation of witcher, mutated by Alzur himself. After the Order began fracturing he had a confrontation with Arnaghan (who’ll be the founder of the bear school). Arnaghad almost killed one of his brothers, slashed Erland across the face then parted ways with the Order and left Morgraig Castle with his own group. Seeing that the the remaining witchers couldn’t go on like that, he grabbed his 13 best friend and left to Kaer Seren, where (after purging it from spectres) he founded the Griffin School which focused on magic, preparedness and flexibility. His teaching emphasized knightly values (mimicking his long-dead mentor, a knight named Gryphon) in hopes that it would make future witchers’ life easier. It didn’t.

Coen & Keldar: The cards are mainly connected by background. Coen is finished killing what appears to be an albino arachas (but it’s definitely an insectoid), while Keldar’s taking notes. We can rightly assume that he’s updating their bestiary, since he’s one of the teachers/mentors who focus on gathering and sharing knowledge. Coen’s flexibility shows in the flavour text: “There is no such thing as a fair fight. Every advantage and every opportunity that arises is used in combat.” Not very knightly, is it?

Kaer Seren: The “Star Keep” Erland and his friends fled to. It was used by the Order’s mages to mutate witchers (that’s why it was haunted by spectres). It’s located at the edge of the Dragon mountains by the sea between Poviss and Kovir. It’s said to possess the great library, which later mages tried to get for themselves. They messed up: by bringing down an avalanche on the Keep, that knowledge was destroyed. The keep was badly damaged and many witchers died.

Target Practice: The Griffin School’s specialty is their precise aim - they “can split an apple in two from a hundred paces”.

School of the Bear:

Bear Witcher Mentor & Bear Witcher Adept: The adept card shows that young witcher are taught to catch fish by hand (just like their school relevant animal). On the mentor card the elder witcher leads a group of younglings in the mountains; possibly out to teach tracking. The cards are connected by flavour text. The young Bear witcher-would-be’s need to complete the Trial of the Mountain, which consists of them climbing Mount Gorgon (also known as the Devil Mountain; it is the highest peak of the Amell range) to retrieve a runestone. The Trial often ends with the kids frozen to death. The Bear Mentor card’s flavour confirms it: “If you’re unsure of the way, just keep a lookout for markers - the frozen corpses of would-be witchers.” This sounds ominous - don’t they collect their fallen?

Bear Witcher: Bears are solitary hunters as seen in the flavour text: “life alone can be tough”. The witcher in the pic just dismembered what looks like a ghoul (with a tail?).

Bear Witcher Quartermaster: This one I like. The Quartermaster is an amputee (missing one of his arms, which was taken by a bear; must have won that fight one-handed), yet they still found a job for him where he can be useful. His flavour text suggest he likes Mahakam mead.

Arnaghad: The founder of the Bear School, he never felt kinship with his fellow witchers. After attacking a witcher named Rhys over a contract, wounding him deeply from shoulder to waist, he returned to Morgraig, attacked Erland then left with his possé to found the Bear School - Haern Caduch - in the Amell Mountains. Later he almost died in a betrayal, which resulted in another schism and the foundation of the Viper School.

Gerd: Gerd’s a legendary witcher who fled to Skellige after allying with a Usurper instead of his daughter, who later issued a warrant for his arrest. He has a busy time in Skellige: first slaying a dragon, befriending the Jarl Torgeir, killing a bunch of sirens, losing so many weapon diagrams you wouldn’t believe, losing half his pay and silver sword on gwent, escaping Nilfgaard and managing to slay a striga, killing some of his pursuers, only to be caught up in the siege of Torgeir’s castle, where he died in the ruins. On the card he’s showing Bear-typical strength: he’s tearing apart a siren with his bear hands.

Junod of Belhaven: Junod had a dubious background, but was thought to be the child of a brave dwarf and a giantess. He’s a huge man, with a big bushy beard and bald head. His sobriquet is false; he took it after Ivo, because he liked the ring of it. He was known as a strict haggler and a bit of a gambler. In 1243 he took a contract in hopes of cash (he wanted to forge the Grandmaster Ursine Armour). The subterranean monster was said to live in the caverns. Junod drew bear signs and wrote a warning on the wall (this is the scene we see on the card). He was however ill-prepared; the beast turned out to be a shaelmaar (a type of relic Gaetan slew once) that killed him in that very cavern.

Dire Bear: Once again related to the school in question, the Dire Bear is stuck with so much weaponry that it looks like a walking armory. Lots of witchers must have tried to slay it, yet it still kicks - just like Bear Witchers, it’s resilient till the very end.

Haern Caduch: Built into the side of the Amell Mountains, it’s the coldest environment of all the schools. As with the other schools, the Bears were forced out of it due to folk riots. It was left in disrepair to be buried under snow and ice (as seen on the card). It’s name could be translated as “Piercing Whiskers”.

Armor Up: As Bear’s are more likely to stand in the way of attack than dodge, they need to wear a heavy armour at all times.

Salamandra:

Roland Bleinheim & Gellert Bleinheim: Witcher 1 characters. They are thought to be brothers, leading the Salamandra organization. As drug lords one heads the fisstech operation in Vizima’s sewers (Roland), the other in the swamps (Gellert). The flavour text pretty much matches: both of them wondering what the other one is doing.

Salamandra Mage: The art itself was already leaked in China around 2 years back, and there were a few theories. One of them was that the man depicted is Zerrikanian, and I think that’s correct. Both the facial tattoo, darker skin, thinly braided hair and fire magic points in that direction. Azar Javed (a known Salamandra fire mage) happens to be a Zerrikanian escapee too.

Salamandra Lackey: A girl with the Salamandra-stapled mask runs from a city guard. The flavour text says the following: “Lackeys are expected to perform their first five jobs for no pay, demonstrating their passion for the gig.” The organization monitors from the beginning that only those remain who are extremely loyal to their cause.

Fallen Rayla: A little background for those who are unfamiliar with her: Rayla of Lyria was a veteran of the Nilgaardian Wars. She harbours anti-nonhuman sentiments after she was captured by Scoia’taels and severely maimed. The Rayla we see on the card is a mutant - in Witcher 1 she was supposedly shot down by Scoia’tael, and Salamandra found her close to death, subjected her to mutation. She was killed by Geralt.

Salamander: The card shows a bright blue spotted salamander. It has two tails and heads (possibly grown together?). The Salamander is a symbol of the organization. Metaphorically speaking it could mean, that Salamandra thought of itself as something untouchable: “best to avoid petting them, as the salamander, when threatened, secretes a deadly toxin”.

Failed Experiment: The card - ironically - thrives when it’s poisoned. The “experiment” only resembles a human in shape. It’s clutching the table ends, as if trying to escape still.  It’s fair to assume that they later dissected it: “even failed experiments can serve a purpose”.

Salamandra Abomination: A step further from the failed experiment - we see the results of pushing science’s boundaries. Only the skull is left intact, everything else of the body is covered with insectoid-like growths.

Stolen Mutagens: Gruesome organ harvesting. The witcher heart (?) glows, which is either an artistic decision (probable) or the mages sent magic into the body, and the mutagens light up (like angiographia). Three types of mutagens can be harvested: red (strength), blue (magic) or green (resilience). I headcanon that the amount they inject of the three types can vary - that’s how you get strength inclined witchers like the wolves (red), or big ass mothers like the bears (green).

Salamandra Hideout: There are multiple hideouts in Witcher 1 (outskirt of Visima, crypt in sewers and one in the trade quarters). The one depicted here is the fisstech lab in the sewers. It shows a dimly lit, cobwebbed room. There’s an elevation where a body lays on the table. The elevation’s floor is gridded, so the blood and other fluids can freely flow down into the sewer water, where many bodies are already discarded recklessly.

Neutral:

Alzur & Viy & Koshchey: Alzur was a charismatic mage and spell inventor, who created many horrible monsters, like the koshchey (with the spell: Alzur’s Double Cross) and the Viy (a huge centipede-like insectoid). He was also the one who did the lion’s share of work with the witcher’s mutation.

Cosimo Malaspina: Cosimo was the teacher of Alzur. He was known for his knowledge in hybridization and genetic modification. Him and Alzur were the true creators of the witchers sect. On the gwent card, three man are shown prodding at a mutated body. Cosimo (the old dude) is in the middle, Alzur might be the one on the left and that leaves Idarran on the right. His flavour text paints him as cold and clinical, someone without empathy: “Children keep asking him for gifts. He doesn’t know why, but it really helps with finding subjects for his experiments.”

Idarran of Ulivo & Idr & Wererat: Idarran was one of the contributers of the witcher experiments. He’s an expert in hybridization and genetic modification, whose teacher was Alzur. He was a pale kid who lived in the canals of Vizima and experimented on rats at the age of 5. He found beauty in gruesome creations, like the Wererat (a human-sized rat on roids) and the Idr (a big centipede-like insectoid). He’s disdained by Geralt for his many monsters.

Triangle within a Triangle: It’s a magic spell used to introduce a series of mutations and to greatly increase the mass of a given body. That way they can create huge monstrosities, like the koshchey. Adepts often confuse it with a pentagram which can lead to infernal disasters.

Selective mutation: The card shows a close up of a young man’s eyes - one mutated (catlike) one human. His skin shows his high toxicity level, ashen with prominent veins. He’s held down as alchemists prepare to inject a yellow concoction into the human eye. It’s possible that after the success of witchers the mages tried to recreate the changes in smaller scale, then unmake it in turn, unsuccessfully.

Witcher Student: This is not really a card, but I included it anyway. The card’s ability is - ironically - doomed, and to add insult to injury, its flavour text is the following well-known fact: “Four out of ten boys survive… at most.” It’s also a point for black humour that the gwent commentators added: the Trial of Grasses card boosts this unit significantly.

Berengar: He’s a Wolf School Witcher who blamed his school for denying him a normal life and consequently abandoned them. In Witcher 1 Geralt can decide to kill or spare him. In a letter he admits that he was a coward because he betrayed Kaer Morhen and worked with Salamadra in hope that they can undo his mutation. His card references a questline in Witcher 1, where he tried to reason with the vodyanoi (~lovecraftian fish people) to spare the village’s prize-winning cow, named Strawberry. This is non-canon; in the game Geralt takes over the quest to do this instead.

Leo: Another Witcher 1 character. He was an orphan taken in by Vesemir. He was a kind-hearted but hot-headed man, who had all the training but not the mutations and the experience - he never killed a man. The flavour text of his gwent card kind of mocks his death: “He would have caught the arrow if he only had some heads-up.” He’s burned on a pyre and his cenotaph can be found south of Kaer Morhen.

Geralt: Quen: The last classical sign that wasn’t yet a card. In the art, Geralt is wearing the Manticore armour

Snowdrop: She’s a not yet seen character; impish looking female bard with light blond hair (flowers braided on the side) who plays a medieval version of the fiddle to a rooster. There’s a horseshoe hanging from the hem of his pants. She’s also seen in the gwent: journey #3 launch trailer. She’s narrating that she was saved by Alzur. Alzur told her about his plans of creating witchers to fight the beasts of the Continent, and she admired him so much she spread his story (”let me tell you about the greatest sorceress to ever lived”). Their story will unveil in the next week, I’ll probably update accordingly. It’s also interesting that Alzur says in the gwent intro (regarding witchers): “Bards will toil to do justice to their feats.” As if his own successes and experiences will be mirrored in his creations. Projecting much?

Monsters:

Viy & Idr: both of them are centipede-like insectoids conjured by infamous mages (see: Alzur and Idarran)

Wererat: same can be said about this one. Idarran experimented on Vizima’s sewer rats since the age of 5. This human sized abomination was the end result.

Succubus: We already discussed how the “Succubus” doesn’t fit the theme. Other interesting thing is the surrounding of her - in the background we can see a skull full of some kinda of dark liquid; she’s also holding a goblet. I’m not saying she’s drinking blood, but if she does, it would shed some questions as succubi don’t need to drink blood at all.

Phooca: As nekkers’ rare big brother, phoocas are ogroids that have the strength to rip a man’s head off with their bear hands. According to the wiki, in Celtic folklore they are regarded as shapeshifting fairies.

Koshchey: A witcher 1 boss, koshcheys are spider-like abominations summoned by mages. The woman standing her ground in the picture is Visenna (Geralt’s druid mom). In the story she’s the one to kill the first koshchey ever created.

Spontaneous Evolution: Under the Red Moon the wolf mutated into an amalgamation of eyes and teeth. Malaspina possibly added something to the mix that proved unstable. The card’s name is kind of ironic - this change is not spontaneous (it was induced) but could be related to evolution (it would imply that this form is somehow advantageous to the current environment and helps adaptation). (Note: in my opinion spontaneous generation would be a better term: it’s the thought that living creatures could arise from nonliving matter.)

Hybrid: the card shows a two-headed wolf or dog. Pretty straight-forward.

Chimera: A creature created my Cosimo Malaspina. He combines the genes of a fiend and griffin, then added a trace of insectoid and wyvern. It kind of looks like a furred wyvern with antlers. Interestingly the frightener (an insectoid; a rare result of magical experiment) is also called a chimera.

Dol Dhu Lokke: a new monster lair location. The depending on how you translate “lokke” the Elder can be read as “black valley place” or “alluring black valley”. It’s so dangerous - housing many-a horrors - that even a witcher thinks twice before going near it.

Interesting tidbits

Coen has hair, which is weird because so far he was described in all sources as bald.

There used to be a card  that was also called Viper Witcher, which is now referred to as “Kingslayer”

The Bear Witcher’s face was drawn after one of CDPR’s employee.

The Koshchey’s card title has a typo: “Koschchey”.

Easter eggs (mainly in flavour text)

The Spontaneous Evolution card references The Powerpuff Girls intro: “Professor Malaspina accidentally added an extra ingredient to the concoction - compound X.”

The Bear Witcher card might reference a song of Baloo from the Jungle Book (The Bare Necessities): “Life alone on the road can be tough - be sure to bring all the bare necessities.”

So, I have promised @spielzeugkaiser a fic based on this amazing thing and what do you know, I finally lived up to that promise. Please, accept this humble Easter gift ✨💕

I was supposed to post in a couple of days back but when I was literally two sentences away from the end, my laptope froze and deleted the entire thing, so this a 2.0 version

As a witcher, Geralt usually thought himself ready for just about anything. 

No monsters, curses or wars were something that he didn’t know how to deal with, the long training in Kaer Morhen and the even longer life on the Path having prepared him for all the highs and lows, however good or bad. 

The thing he wasn’t prepared for, however, was raising a child. 

Especially a girl. Especially a baby girl, his gorgeous little Child Surprise.

If it wasn’t for Jaskier, Geralt really wasn’t sure if he would’ve been able to not only survive the eight months that they’ve had her but to keep the princess alive, as well. For the first couple of weeks, he was terrified of as much as holding her in his arms because she was just so small that he was afraid he’s going to break her if he as much as touches her the wrong way. 

Gradually, over the months, Jaskier had convinced him that it’s alright and that there aren’t a lot of people he knows with their hands as gentle as Geralt’s anyway. That might’ve made the witcher blush uncontrollably but it did ease the worry in his chest. 

Overall, the time went by quickly. It was bewildering to think that Ciri is just a few weeks from turning one year old. 

It goes without saying, though, that if it wasn’t for the rather long list of friends that were more than happy to babysit, that time would’ve felt a lot longer. The list started with Jaskier’s bardic friends like Priscilla, went on to Regis and ended with Geralt’s brothers who were so hopelessly in love with the little princess that they kept travelling to Toussaint to visit them on what seemed like every opportunity they could get. 

Out of the entire list, Geralt’s favourite babysitter was Eskel. 

The witcher would always bring his goat with him, even though it was far beyond Geralt how that little fragile creature could make it over the Amell mountains over and over again on those thin wobbly legs, and there didn’t seem to be anything that Ciri loved more than that goat. 

Watching the young princess play with it in the gardens of Corvo Bianco, losing balance every now and then and flopping down into the grass would make Eskel wipe at his eyes every single time only to then heatedly convince Jaskier that it’s his allergies and he’s not crying. The bard would simply nod with a knowing look while also being well aware that witchers do not have allergies.

Eskel was a very good babysitter, that was true. He played with Ciri for hours and if the weather wasn’t warm enough for them to stay outside, he would read to her even though there was barely anything she understood. 

Jaskier’s personal favourite, however, had always been Coën. 

Whenever the Griffin would visit them, he would straight up steal their child and take her on adventures, riding down to the slopes of Blessure or to the nearby towns, Ciri safe and very happy in his lap.

And when they would return in the evening, he would stay with her in the garden, providing the princess with just about anything that she could poke him - but not herself - with, explain that that is a sword and then proceed to fall dead every single time she would crawl or wobble over to him and poke him in the leg.

Geralt was worried that Coën is putting the princess in danger but she never laughed as much as she laughed with him, and there was simply nothing that Geralt could do when he heard that sound. after all, he was but a man and his heart had its limits. 

Jaskier, on the other hand, had never been worried about leaving Ciri with Coën because even though it seemed like the witcher was raising a little warrior out of her, she would never have as much a scratch on her whenever she was with him. 

Eventually, Geralt had also grown used to Coën’s understanding of babysitting. 

While Eskel was like a mother hen to the girl, he supposed, Coën was his polar opposite. 

A cock, Geralt had once proposed, very drunk and then spilt his entire drink on himself, laughing. 

Overall, both Geralt and Jaskier were more than happy to let someone else look out for the princess for an hour or two, assured that she is perfectly safe and taken care of. 

Whenever Yennefer or Priscilla would visit, it was simply the best thing they could’ve asked for because they would spend entire days with Ciri, telling them both to make themselves busy with something else because their daughter was not going to be theirs for the next couple of days. Those were the times that everything would almost go back to the way it was before the princess was introduced to their lives, and even though they both missed her dearly when Yen or Priscilla would put her down to sleep with them, in the guest bedroom, spending a day or two in bed felt heavenly. 

Sometimes it was Regis that volunteered and whenever he would take Ciri with him to Beauclair, she would return in the most gorgeous dresses Jaskier’s ever seen. When he would say that she’s going to grow out of them in a month or two and that Regis shouldn’t spend so much coin, he would simply say that he has to spend it on something and that it makes him happy to see the princess enjoying herself.

All that being said, there was also Lambert. 

And it’s not that he was a bad babysitter - because he wasn’t - it was that it seemed to be his life’s purpose to slip Ciri some ale instead of water on the first instance that he thought would be safe for her. He still has not managed to, Barnabas-Basil keeping a very close eye on him whenever he would go into the kitchen but he was getting there. 

Ciri did adore him, though, and that made Geralt ask the gods why is she drawn to bad influence so much. 

“Two hours, Lambert,” he says, placing a kiss on Ciri’s temple and handing her over to the younger witcher, automatically taking his hair away when she reaches out to tug on it. “Give us two hours and we’ll join you for dinner. Don’t you dare break my child in that time.”

“Yes-yes,” Lambert said, rolling his eyes and ushering Geralt towards the bedroom. “Now go to your bard.”

With a sigh and one final look over his shoulder, Geralt does as he’s told, crossing the hallway to open the bedroom door and slip inside. 

Jaskier is already in bed, waiting for him, and once Geralt lays eyes upon him, the worry in his chest eases, almost disappears. Just a little sleep-deprived, with that impossibly soft look in his eyes, the bard looks more than perfect. 

“Come, love,” he smiles, reaching out to take Geralt’s hand and pull him down onto the bed with him. “Don’t worry about her, she’s going to be just fine, you know that as well as I do. He loves her.”

Geralt sighs but can’t help the smile tugging on the corner of his lips when Jaskier leans in and places a kiss on the tip of his nose. 

“I know,” he nods. “I know.”

They’ve got a ridiculous amount of pillows on their bed but Geralt finds that very convenient when Jaskier pulls him into a long, sweet kiss and he can lower him down onto those pillows, a soft pleased rumble escaping his chest. 

Breaking away, he finds his way to Jaskier’s neck, peppering soft, gentle kisses over the tender skin there and only stopping for a second when the bard tugs his shirt up and over his head. 

Out of habit, Geralt keeps half an ear out for Ciri, just to make sure she’s alright, and for an impressively long time - considering that she’s with Lambert - he doesn’t pick up anything out of the ordinary. 

And he almost completely forgets himself in the feeling of Jaskier’s warm skin against his own, his hands and lips when, on the very edge of his consciousness, he registers Ciri’s wobbling steps, hears her knock into pieces of furniture as she reaches out to hold on to them. 

By the sound of it, she’s making her way towards their bedroom door and, soon enough, there are Lambert’s hurried steps to follow.

“No getting away from me, little lady,” he says, Ciri laughing as he scoops her up into his arms. “Now be a good little nuisance and let your dads fuck.”

Geralt almost chuckles at that, about to go back to trailing kisses down Jaskier’s chest, when he hears Ciri’s high-pitched, excited voice. 

“Fuck!”

He freezes, suppressing a whine and Lambert, bursting out into laugher, doesn’t make matters better. 

“What is it?” Jaskier says, perking up, the sound loud enough for him to hear. 

Just at that, the door to their bedroom swings open and the younger witcher waltzes in, holding Ciri above his head and almost bumping her into the doorframe. 

“Put your dicks away and look what your kid can do!” he says, loud enough for the dutchess in her castle in Beauclair to hear. 

“Fuck!” Ciri repeats again, matching the volume to the witcher. 

Jaskier’s eyes light up and he sits up on the bed, holding the blanket up to his chest and straight-up beaming, his smile so wide that Geralt is genuinely concerned for his well-being. 

“Oh, sweet Melietele, it’s her first word!” he says, reaching his arms out for Lambert to deposit the girl into them. “Oh, sweetheart, I’m so proud of you!”

He pulls Ciri to his chest, tears in his eyes and that is just about everything that’s keeping Geralt from ripping Lambert apart on the spot. 

“Two hours,” he says, defeated. “I asked you to look after her for two hours and you taught my daughter to curse.”

Lambert gives him the very best shit-eating grin he can muster and winks. 

“Oh, you’re just mad because you weren’t there to hear it for the first time,” he teases.

Without really giving Geralt the chance to answer, he takes Ciri back from Jaskier’s arms and retreats to the door, still grinning. 

“I shall allow you to go back to your ministrations,” he says, closing the door behind him. 

Geralt lets out a long sigh and lays down to rest his head on Jaskier’s chest, the bard playing with his hair gently. 

“Never again am I going to leave them alone without extra supervision,” Geralt says. 

Jaskier snorts and pulls him up into a kiss, smiling against his lips. 

“Yeah,” he agrees. “Never in my fucking life.”

Ch.5

Paige leaned against the window as she sat on the seat, staring down at the city below. It had only been a day since the whole Irilia incident and her mother hadn't grounded her so that was something. Plus, she had two new friends.

Gregory and Kaitlin were staying in the guest room next door. Paige smiled a little and she hugged her pillow close to her chest. 'Then why am I feeling so... unsatisfied?' She thought before she groaned as she pressed her pillow against her face, muffled groans escaping her.

There was a knock at the door and she removed the pillow and glanced at it. "Who is it?" She asked. "It's Kaitlin."

Paige blinked in surprise and she sat up. "Come in," she said. The door opened with a slight creak and Kaitlin poked her head into the room. She wore a blue nightgown and her hair was tied into a bun. A small one, at least.

"Can't sleep?" Paige asked, smiling softly. "After yesterday's fiasco, I doubt anyone would," Kaitlin chuckled, sitting next to her, "what is it that you do whenever there's no meetings?"

"I write, I think," Paige said, shrugging a little. Kaitlin looked at the stars before she looked at Paige again. "Do you spar?" She asked curiously.

Paige looked at her surprised. "Tried to once. Mom literally freaked out," she said with a soft chuckle.

Kaitlin hummed and she jumped to her feet. "Well let's do it together," she said. Paige looked at her curiously, "really?"

"Yeah," Kaitlin said with a smile. Paige stared at her for a moment before she got up, "aw, what the hell. Let's get to it."

Kaitlin smiled and she grabbed Paige's hand and dragged her out of the bedroom. The two went to a much larger room that Paige immediately recognized. The guards would often use this room to train newbies.

How long had it been since they last used this room?

Kaitlin walked over to a table and picked up a scabbard. She turned to Paige and tossed it to her. The other girl quickly caught it in her hands.

"Have you ever used a sword before, Paige?" Kaitlin asked. "Maybe," Paige said, "I told you, tried to spar once- Mom freaked out. Literally banned me from sparring."

"Well your mom's not here," Kaitlin said, "you're free to do whatever you want." Paige blinked before she smiled, "is that so? En garde."

She took the sword out of the scabbard and charged at Kaitlin who immediately put her sword up to deflect it. When the swords collided, sparks flew from it and the girls grinned at each other.

"En garde," Kaitlin said, "any last words?" "I might cut you to ribbons," Paige said and she jumped back to the mat. Kaitlin smirked, "let your sword do the talking, heathen."

"Oh, now it's on," Paige said and she charged at Kaitlin again who was quick to dodge it.

Kaitlin grinned and laughed. Paige started to laugh too.

The door silently opened and Gregory peeked in. He smiled softly when he saw the two girls. Closing the door silently, he walked away from the room.

He walked to the throne room and over to the throne. He looked at the picture of Paige, Kalder and their parents. He stared at it for a while.

"The King, the Queen, the Prince and the Princess," a familiar voice said, startling him and he turned around to see Latosha walking over to him.

"I... didn't mean to snoop," Gregory said hesitantly. Latosha chuckled softly, "trust me, you didn't. I had some things on my mind so I figured a walk down the halls would clear my mind."

Gregory nodded as she stood beside him and she stared at the picture. Silence fell over the room and Griffin fought the urge to turn and leave the room. To bid the queen a goodnight.

"Do you know why Transcendants see the Universe as our gods?" Latosha suddenly asked. Gregory looked at her, "...no."

Latosha looked up at the glass ceiling which showed the bright stars and moons. "It is because they are our mothers and fathers. We are all made of Stardust. The first human that was made was the Stargazer."

"I've heard of them," Gregory said, "what happened to them?" "Nobody knows," Latosha said, "they were the first to bring us all to life."

Gregory smiled softly and he looked at the throne. "My mother told me that Transcendants call each other brothers and sisters," he said.

"Well we are children of the Universe. Even when we are still human," Latosha chuckled and her smile fell, "can I ask you something?"

'Here it comes,' Gregory thought but he pushed that back and he nodded to her.

"Why did you and your sister want to come to me? What was wrong with staying in your home?" She asked.

"Kaitlin's always wanted to leave. I was the one who couldn't stay there," Gregory said, "I left it all behind," his voice broke a little," I left my own lover."

"Lover?" Latosha echoed softly. Gregory nodded weakly and he blinked in surprise when she pulled him into a hug.

"It will be alright," she said softly, rubbing his back. Gregory only nodded. 'I hope so,' he thought and closed his eyes tightly.

"Get some rest and make sure the girls do the same," Latosha chuckled, "I have a feeling those two are trying to create mischief."

Gregory chuckled softly and he nodded. "Goodnight, your highness," he said before he walked out of the throne room. Latosha smiled softly before her smile fell when the doors closed.

"I know you're here... Alastor," she said calmly. A man stepped out of the shadows. He had light tan skin and bright red eyes. He wore a red and white tux and dark red jeans. He wore a monocle.

"After twenty years, your senses have never failed you," Alastor chuckled. "What do you want?" Latosha growled.

"I simply want to talk," Alastor said, "and even you know the walls have ears and secrets."

Latosha narrowed her eyes coldly but deep down, she knew he was right. She walked over to a statue and she moved it slightly. There was a low grating sound and a door opened.

She grabbed a lantern and walked through the door, Alastor following behind. The door closed behind the two.

They walked down a long corridor and it led to doubled doors. Latosha took out a red-golden key and she put it in the lock. She turned it and there was an almost inaudible click. Alastor raised an eyebrow and he looked at Latosha.

The doors opened and Alastor widened his eyes. There was a deathbed that was surrounded by fire lilies and on top of the lilies was a nineteen year old boy. He had dark brown skin and his hair was raven black with dark brown strands. He wore a white tux and pants and his eyes were closed.

He was lifeless.

Alastor stared at the body and he slowly looked at Latosha. "Who... who is this?"

The queen was silent for a few moments and Alastor was about to ask again when she spoke up first. "Kalder Ezra McHenry," she said calmly, "my firstborn son."

"Wh-what is he doing down here? Why-?" Alastor started to ask. "For someone who is the first to lay eyes on him, you ask a lot of questions, brother," Latosha said calmly and she turned to him and he almost jolted backwards in surprise and concern.

Tears were in Latosha's eyes and she seemed to look angry and scared at the same time. Even more so than the last time he had seen her. Since the Black Hole War.

"He. Is. Not dead," she hissed, "his soul has been separated from his body. He lays dormant." "Does Paige know?" Alastor asked.

"NO!" Latosha screamed and Alastor flinched back.

"She does not know and she never will," Latosha growled. Alastor stared at her. Deep down, he was terrified of this Everan. What had happened to the calm and caring woman he had known all those years ago?

He swallowed and exhaled. "Very well," he said. Latosha stared at him, a cold look on her face and she turned away. "Leave us," she hissed.

Alastor swallowed again and he only walked out of the room. Latosha reached out and touched her son's face. "Oh my boy...," she whispered, "I will bring you back. I promise."

But deep down, she knew promises were made to be broken. And this promise had long since been broken.
