Story at-a-glance
Behind the scenes of many of the companies that provide the products and services you use each day are two investment firms that own more shares than other shareholders. The list includes social media, transportation, news media, food manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies
Blackrock and Vanguard hold large interests in pivotal companies, and Vanguard holds a large share of Blackrock. In turn, Blackrock has been called the "Fourth Branch of Government" by Bloomberg as they are the only private firm that has financial agreements to lend money to the central banking system
Blackrock also developed the software used by the Fed to manage financial transactions; one Princeton University lecturer has said Blackrock controls the Federal Reserve and has more power than most governments
Ascertaining who owns large portions of Vanguard is more difficult as it is a private company that is not publicly traded. It's important to think globally but act locally to protect your civil rights, including supporting state legislators who support your right to choose health care
Until recently, it has appeared that economic competition has been driving the rise and fall of small and large companies across the U.S. Supposedly, PepsiCo is Coca Cola's competitor, Apple and android are vying for your loyalty and Pfizer and Bayer are battling for your pharmaceutical dollars. But what is revealed in this video, using publicly available data you can check, is that this has been an illusion.
On the surface, all appears to be the same as it always has been. But the growth of a few corporations, beginning in the mid-1970s, has all but destroyed the competitive market on which America's strength has rested. As demonstrated in the video, a quick look through Yahoo! Finance shows that Vanguard and Blackrock have been the puppet masters behind nearly every large industry that affects your life.
As you can quickly discern, the global economy may be the greatest illusionary trick ever pulled over the eyes of people around the world. Without doubt, we are in a new place and facing new challenges. It will take accurate information and local action to continue to have the right to take control of your health.
Behind the Scenes, Two Companies Own the Supply Chain
As you watch the video, you'll see that most of the large corporations that supply the food, information, data and drugs used every day are controlled by a select few investment firms whose sole goal is a greater return on their profits. Of course, that's been the backbone of a competitive economy — to grow your profit margin while competing against other companies for the same market.
In theory, this competition drives innovation, advancement and price structures that benefit the consumer. However, when one, two or three large companies own most of what you use, competition becomes an illusion, resulting in a monopoly where companies can set a price and there are no other products from which to choose.
As the World Economic Forum1 and United Nations2 collaborate to "build back better," it is crucial to pay attention to how large corporations across the world may contribute to a societal shift that moves more money into the hands of billionaires and creates a new depth of poverty across the world.
One of the mandates for the Federal Trade Commission is to ensure there is competition in the marketplace. For example, in 2000, a federal judge ruled that Microsoft had maintained a monopoly with Windows and tied the company browser, Internet Explorer, to the operating system, thus gaining a greater economic foothold.3
The company barely escaped being split up, until it agreed with a settlement to curb its practices. More than 20 years later, the Department of Justice is now looking at antitrust allegations against Google's business dealings that have hurt smaller competitors.4 But the two major investors in both these companies appear to have escaped unscathed.
As you go through the list of companies in which Vanguard and Blackrock strategically hold a large investment interest, consider how the products and services provided by these companies are inextricably intertwined with your daily life.
Google
YouTube
Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
Amazon
Alibaba
Pfizer
Bayer Pharmaceuticals
AstraZeneca
PepsiCo
Coca Cola
Microsoft
Apple
Netflix
Reuters
Viacom (CBS)
ATT
Tesla
The New York Times
Agricultural Bank of China
FedEx
American Airlines
United Airlines
TUI AG
Zimmer Biomet Holdings
Volkswagen AG
Ford Motor Company
You may recognize many of these names and some may not be as recognizable. You can do your own search on Yahoo! Finance,5 typing in the company and clicking "holdings" in the navigation bar. The companies span a variety of aspects of daily life, including:
Social media
Shopping
Food manufacturers
Technology and software
Pharmaceutical companies
Entertainment
Communications
Airlines
Medical equipment
Transportation
Holiday companies
Car companies
World media
However, as comments on my Twitter feed indicate, it is not always apparent why this information is important to your rights as an individual.6 It may be difficult to imagine a world where your news is being manipulated. As is illuminated in the video, Vanguard and Blackrock:7
"... own the news that's been created, they own the distribution of the news that's been created, they own the lives of the reporters that are reporting the news that's being distributed that's being created on your TV screen. CBS, FOX, ABC, it doesn't matter which you're watching.
They all are using that wonderful phrase from Davos now — build back better. The point being is that you've got very few people controlling everything and that's information. Talk about information is power, well not only do they create the information, but they have all the distribution nodes to literally change the world mindset as it were."
Every Media Chain Using the Same Narrative
Davos is a ski town in the Swiss Alps but has become the shorthand for the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting that's held in the town.8 It is a chance for some of the most powerful figures in the world to collaborate. The meeting has been headed and organized by Klaus Schwab, an 83-year-old German engineer and economist. As you consider what you're hearing in the news, remember:9
"Everything we see on the shelves in the shops, what you buy online, who delivers it, who is making the COVID jab, who is distributing the jab, who is reporting on the jab, who is censoring alternative information about the jab, and all the rest of it. It's all the same people."
The consistency of news reporting across mainstream media should now make sense since each of them have similar major investors and those major investors have a singular focus of raising their profit margin while pushing the Fourth Industrial Revolution. How can you believe what's being told in the news when every news channel is saying the same thing?
It may have been that Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who broke the Nixon Watergate story in 1972, were the last investigative journalists working for a major news media company who were allowed to follow a news story to conclusion without blatant censorship.
Around the world, doctors are being silenced. At the beginning of the pandemic, medical professionals were told not to speak to the media about a lack of personal protective equipment within the hospital. Although the American Medical Association10 initially came out in support of a physician's right to speak out about the care conditions, the tables have since turned.
In the quick, six-minute video below, Dr. Dan Stock from McCordsville, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis, speaks to the board of the Mount Vernon Community School Corporation. He provides the board with documentation to back up his claim that the way in which the community was addressing an attempt to stop the spread of infection was, in fact, ineffective.
The video went viral11 with several million views within a day of its posting on YouTube, before it  was taken down for “violating YouTube’s community guidelines.” August 11, 2011,  Tucker Carlson featured the video and Stock on his Fox show,12 where Stock said, “It seems to me that focusing on  immune system improvement whether through a vaccine or non-vaccine methods is  the more rational approach to this.”
Yet, even though Stock provides research evidence and  speaks knowledgeably about the transmission of viral illnesses, the rest of mainstream  media have not picked up on the story and this information is not being  communicated to the public. Those in power want to ensure this type of  information is not shared because it's contrary to the narrative they are  promoting.
House for Sale? Blackrock Is Interested
A recent expose in The Wall Street Journal warns, "… yield-chasing investors are snapping up single-family houses to rent out or flip. They are competing for houses with ordinary Americans, who are armed with the cheapest mortgage financing ever, and driving up home prices."13
Yet, why would institutional investors be interested in overpaying for single family homes? To gain a greater understanding of the answer, you must take a look at Blackrock's partners, which include the World Economic Forum. The company manages assets that are worth $5.7 trillion and appears to be focused on pushing the average American out of the housing market.
If most of the available housing is owned by investment groups and corporations, they become your landlord. This is one of the ways in which the World Economic Forum envisions society in 2030. It's the part where you will "own nothing and be happy."
While it sounds like it came straight from George Orwell's book, "1984," it is in fact the agenda published on the World Economic Forum website.14 In fact, Forbes15 published an article in 2016 titled "Welcome To 2030: I Own Nothing, Have No Privacy And Life Has Never Been Better," which was written by the World Economic Forum.
Interestingly, the World Economic Forum once had a link to the article on their website under "agenda," but that link is now dead,16 even though a WEF Twitter post17 touting it in 2017 is still up. The link on the Twitter post, however, is also dead. And, curiously, in February 2021, Reuters did a "fact check" which claims the WEF never had anything to do with it.
The Fourth Branch of Government
BlackRock not only is an investment firm, but also has been called the "Fourth Branch of Government" because they are the only private firm with an intimate relationship with the Federal Reserve and financial agreements to lend money to the central banking systems. Interestingly, software developed by BlackRock — Aladdin — is used by the Fed to manage their financial transactions.18
In comparison to other large financial investment firms who have political ties to one party or the other, Blackrock "possesses a power that's more technocratic."19 The firm has a global influence as well. They were tapped as an adviser to the Bank of Canada and the European Union hired them to advise them on incorporating governing and social practices.
According to an analysis by Bloomberg,20 the company may be paid as much as $48 million a year in fees, which could cement the company's ties with powerful policymakers.
To put this into perspective, BlackRock, an investment firm, has more power than most governments and controls the Federal Reserve, Wall Street mega-banks like Goldman Sachs and the WEF's Great Reset, according to F. William Engdahl, a strategic risk consultant and lecturer who holds a degree in politics from Princeton University.21 They don't just want your house, they want your life.
But Who Owns Vanguard?
When you take a look at who owns the largest portion of BlackRock, you learn its Vanguard.22 But ascertaining who has the greatest investment in Vanguard is a little more difficult. The company has a corporate structure that makes ownership challenging to discern.
It appears it's owned by a variety of funds, which in turn are owned by shareholders. Aside from these shareholders, the company has no outside investors and is not publicly traded. As reported in the featured video:23
"The elite who own Vanguard apparently do not like being in the spotlight, but of course they cannot hide from who is willing to dig. Reports from Oxfam and Bloomberg say that 1% of the world, together owns more money than the other 99%. Even worse, Oxfam says that 82% of all earned money in 2017 went to this 1%.
In other words, these two investment companies, Vanguard and BlackRock, hold a monopoly in all industries in the world and they, in turn, are owned by the richest families in the world, some of whom are royalty and who have been very rich since before the Industrial Revolution."
Although getting to the bottom of the major investors in Vanguard is difficult, it's important to keep in mind that BlackRock and Vanguard, individually and combined, own enough shares in Big Pharma and mainstream media to have control over what is produced, shared and distributed.
This information is important because it is the drug companies and media that are driving the response to this infection. Thus far, it has all endangered rather than optimized public health and the official narrative continues to be false, leading the public further astray and fostering fear based on lies.
To have a chance of righting this situation, we must understand the central players and why these false narratives are being created in the first place. In the Global Justice Now December 2020 report entitled "The Horrible History of Big Pharma,"24 they review the shameful history of the top seven drug companies in the world.
These companies are now developing and manufacturing drugs and gene-based "vaccines" against COVID-19, while mainstream media have helped suppress information about readily available older drugs that have been shown to have a high degree of efficacy against the infection.
Think Globally and Act Locally
Just as the market collectively impacted the downfall of the Grocery Manufacturers Association,25 you have an impact in your local community. It may be overwhelming to consider how quickly the world is changing, but you can have a voice in your local community.
As you may know, after my articles have been published for 48 hours, they are no longer available to read. This means, to reference the information you need to protect your health, you must copy and paste the articles and keep them on your hard drive. I encourage you to share these with your friends and family and encourage them to share as well.
It may be inconceivable to think about making a difference on a national scale to protect your civil rights, but there are approaches you can take on a local level that will make a big difference as people across the world speak up.
Many large communities and states are forming groups to stand up for individual rights, to prevent vaccine passports and limit governmental power in a peaceful manner.26 It's also important to find a group with which to work and to support your state legislators who support your right as an individual to choose your health care.

Tumblr media
Because someone needs to start it, here we are: I'll introduce myself!
My name is Liv Mruck and I'm one of the two admins of this page.
Keiran, the other admin, will post his introduction aswell.
Both of us share the great passion of cars, planes and flying. So we thought: Why dont we create a page and share our passion, memories and experiences? 15Min later, this page was created. I also created a page for Instagram and Tumblr. If everything goes right, we may create a website.
Point is, you should get to know us a bit. Everyone hates reading so we did a little Q&A.
If you're not into smalltalk Q&As scroll down, I'll talk about my memories, experiences etc.
Q: How old are you?:
A: I'm 20, soon 21 and fully grown up. ;)
Q: Are you male or female?
A: I'm a female.
Q: Where are you from?
A: I live in Berlin, Germany but plan to move to the UK in the next 3 years.
Q: Do you have pets?
A: Yes! I have two amazing cats. Both are female and love cuddles.
Q:Which sports do you like?
A: I'm into soccer and iceskating.
Q: Do you have tattoos?
A: No, I never liked them on me but I want to get a little tattoo of a Cirrus SR22 on my wrist. Ops!
Q: What kind of music do you listen to?
A: Depends on my mood.
Q: Do you travel a lot?
A: Yes. And no. I didnt travel for a half year now. After my passport is done I'm looking forward to fly around Europe.
Q: Do you have a favorite City?
A: Thats hard to say, but I'd say Miami it is!
Q: Do you have favorite movies?
A: of course! Need for Speed and Sully are my favorites!
Q: Do you work? If so, as what?
A: I'm a butcher and a saleswoman.
That's the smalltalk Q&A. If you have questions, never be scared to ask me!
Now lets head to the interesting part about Cars!
Q: What car(s) do you own?
A: I own a 2006 VW Fox. Nothing special. But I'm planning to get a GT86 or Audi S3 Sedan.
Q: What is your dream car?
A: The Mclaren P1. Its my favorite car ever. I'm a Mclaren kind of girl!
Q: Where is your passion from?
A: I cant really remember. I loved cars since I'm born I believe. When I was 5 or even younger, I was able to name all the cars in my neighborhood. My dad loved working on his cars and I tried to help. Welp.. tried. I had around 200 toy cars and loved them all. I always cleaned them, named them and took care of them. Safe to say they were my babies.
Lets head to the plane themed Q&A....
Q: Where is your passion from?
A: As already stated, I loved cars from the beginning. I liked planes too and often visited the airport with my parents, but it really kicked in after my flight from Dusseldorf to Moscow with an Aeroflot A319 or A320. I was seven years old and everything was so amazing and beautiful. The uniforms of the crew, the sounds, all the tech-stuff, the view from above. Then it made CLICK in my head and I was into planes and flying. My parents took me often enough to DUS (Dusseldorf airport) and when I was like 10 or so, I went to the airport every weekend.
Q: Do you have a favorite plane and Airline?
A: Yes, of course. Although it isnt just ONE airline and plane, haha...
I really love the 737-800 or 737MAX8. GA wise, the Cirrus SR22 is my favorite. They are sooooooooooooooo cute... lol!
Favorite Airline is a tricky question. For hopping around europe I personally love Ryanair, For longer flights I prefer Swiss and for longhauls I prefer United Airlines.
(If you're interested, this is my Flightdiary account: https://my.flightradar24.com/LivMruck# )
Q: Talk about your travel memories.
A: Well, since I was 12 I dreamed about the USA. But my parents hated the US and flying in general. As a student i had a little job and flew around Europe. Like, Amsterdam and Vienna with Easyjet, Brussels with Ryanair etc. When I finished school with 16, my mom gifted me a daytrip to Istanbul for around 300€. She wasn't wealthy and I appreciate it still so much. I flew from Berlin Tegel to Munich and from Munich to Istanbul. Both on the same plane: Lufthansa A321 in the Star Alliance colors. (D-AIRW). And back from Istanbul to Zurich and from Zurich to Berlin TXL with Swiss, also the same plane: Swiss A321 HB-IOH)
After another ''tiny'' daytrips finally my dream came true! I booked some flights for under 150:
Berlin to Madrid with the Iberia Express A320, Madrid to Frankfurt with the gorgeous LATAM 787-9 and back from Frankfurt to Berlin with an Airberlin A320. The 787 always has been one of my favorite widebodies and it was pure joy to fly on one.
This was 2016. Remember my dream of flying to the US?
Yes... 2017, when I turned 18 in march, I was still an apprentice and really didn't earn much. I saved 200€ every month and booked my flights to the USA with a bonus I received. I saved a lot in the end and booked two domestic flights.
..October 2018: My dream came true. I packed my bags, my mom drove me to Berlin Tegel in the early morning. She hugged me and told me to take care of myself. After dropping off my bag and answering a few questions to the staff about my bag I already sat in the waiting area. My plane already arrived but only the nose was visible... a few moments later, I walked down the aisle and found my seat. Only one really nice girl in my age sat next to me and I had the best view ever of the wing of our United B763..ever?
Long story short, I arrived at EWR, waited some hours, took my plane to Miami. Spent 2 days there, took the train to Fort Lauderdale, took a Soutwest 737 to Orlando, spent some hours at the airport and flew back to Miami inside an American Airlines B763. When this journey ended, I took the Swiss 777-300ER back to Zurich and changed planes quickly to an A320 of Swiss which took me back to Berlin...
I'll post the whole story of this trip here for sure!
The last question: Are you a pilot? If so, what do you fly?
A: No, I'm not. But I really want to do my PPL. I look forward to it!
That's it. If you just read all of this: Thank you, really. Its just the start of our little page/blog and I really hope that we can deliver some good stuff for you!

Future internet best friend? Are you reading this?
I’m honestly nervous to do this, even though this is not my first time.
We could talk everyday? You could tell me how your friends at school suck, I would understand, we could fan girl about (insert name) and facetime and make plans on how we really need to meet up in real life. I’m looking for an online best friend, who I could write long emails, facetime or have endless text conversations with.
To be honest everything mentioned above, is what I would want. I’m not sure if I can really do it though. I have been able to do it before, never fall out of contact but my life is a rollercoaster where it can happen that I don’t get around to reply, unless I feel like you need me as a friend that you have an answer ASAP. I want to be honest with you :) - I will try my very best to not make promises I can’t keep but I can promise to always be there when you need me.
I wish to be Peter Pan who never grow’s up,
(was something I used to say but after seeing how hot Captain Hook in Once Upon A Time is ... and only adults can really be in love, I’m not sure if I’m still on Peters forever young team, lol)
I wish I could always get away with watching Disney movies & drinking hot chocolate. In reality I struggle, with the pressure of finishing school and working at the same time, figuring out how to deal with people who do nothing but stress me out. I struggle with those 21st Century Girl Problems like: the desicion how much make up to put on my face (the first wolrd problem is real), if it looks stupid or not, I can not decide which Insta theme to like the best, or which Netflix show to binge watch next. I wish my room would look like all the bedrooms on tumblr but sadly, also here - I can not figure out what to like best!
I go by the name: Giulia but thanks to my grandma, I call myself Cara Giulia online. I happen to be the owner of this website you are reading this on and I honestly haven’t posted something on here myself in ages and I thought it’s time again. I’m 20, I live in a country that you can pretty much call the chocolate paradise of the world - Switzerland.
Normally I would have listed all my fandoms but I feel like people pay too much attention on only interests, that I won’t list them this time but I can assure you I have a wide music & series taste.
My friends diganosed me with a concert, chocolate and travel addiction. Most of my hobbies are based online, blogging, vlogging…(even though I haven’t had much time for my hobbies) but I also like swimming, writing, reading. And I have a boyish relationship to cars, I love cars and I love F1 which is a car race.
I would love my internet friend to be a dedicated person someone who cares and puts effort into the friendship too if that makes sense? I don’t care how much younger you are than me, but if you are much older I probably won’t be interested. Any sexual orientation, any skin color, religion. You have to be open minded though and if you live in a city or near a city the airline Swiss flys to that’s a plus (so I can meet you haha). I won’t be accepting requests from boys at the moment, I’m sorry guys, maybe next time. I have 6 years of internet friends experiance, and for my own safety and past experiances I don’t reply to first emails where I right away get the impression it won’t work out or where I feel like the person isn’t real. Don’t be intimidated by that of course, I can tell the difference between an email who someone wrote just for me or copy pasted it and sends it to many. I just want you to know that, I often feel pressured as soon as people know they are messaging the owner of this website - to accept everyone to not be rude. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, tell me something about you, maybe a reply to what I said or tell me something random about you, a story what ever :)! I’m looking forward to hear from you!
xoxo Giulia
you can contact me on this email: [email protected]
you can check out my instagram if you want: @heycaragiulia - I just prefer if you send me a mail :).
I’ll be happy to hear from you, probably going to refresh my inbox like crazy and check if my queue posted this post yet...

Is It Time to Break Up with Airbnb?
Posted: 10/08/19 | October 7th, 2019
There is no denying that Airbnb has changed how we travel. It got people out of the hotel/hostel quandary, gave locals a way to monetize their extra rooms and earn more income, and got tourists into different parts of cities, spreading the benefits of tourism around to a wider part of the community.
It wasn’t the first company to do this, but it made this kind of travel widespread and socially acceptable. The idea of “renting someone’s home” is now seen, not as weird or unsafe, but as a perfectly normal way to see a destination.
I’ve been an Airbnb user since its early days (it began in 2008) and have had some wonderful experiences using the service: the Swiss couple who made and shared dinner with me, the folks in Paris who left me wine as a welcome gift, the retirees in Tours who put a candle in my breakfast croissant for my birthday, the couple in NZ who gave me veggies from their garden, and countless other wonderful experiences where I got to meet locals and learn aspects of life that I might not have otherwise. (I’ve also hosted some really fabulous people too. The site works both ways!)
Over the last few years, I had gotten out of the habit of using Airbnb, instead staying with friends, in hostels, or hotels on points. However, while I was on my book tour over the summer, I decided to start using the service again.
I was nervous about doing so though.
From overtourism to hosts with multiple listings to companies using it to run hotels to a general “whatever” attitude toward complaints, there are a lot of problems with Airbnb. It is no longer the whole “people renting out their room for extra money” service it markets itself as.
I’ve read all the stories. I’ve seen the data.
With over six million listings, Airbnb is one of the biggest booking sites out there. In the first quarter of 2019, it booked 91 million room nights. By comparison, Expedia booked 80.8 million.
But I figured there had to be some gems on the site.
And what kind of travel expert would I be if I didn’t know Airbnb’s current state?
I went in determined to not rent places that were not people’s homes — that is, any rentals run by folks with multiple listings or property management companies, which have the effect of raising rents for everyone. While Airbnb has a lot of problems, the “commercialization” of the service is the biggest.
The growing number of people buying property just to rent it out on Airbnb is driving rent up for locals1 and forcing them out of the city. A recent study from the Institut d’Economia de Barcelona shows that rent in Barcelona’s most touristy areas has increased by as much as 7% between 2012 and 2016.2
Furthermore, in 2016 (the most recent data I could find), true home sharing, where the owner is present during the guest’s stay, accounts for less than 20% of Airbnb’s business in the United States; 81% of Airbnb’s revenue nationwide — $4.6 billion — comes from whole-unit rentals where the owner is not present.
A search on the website Inside Airbnb shows that a high percentage of units are rented by people with multiple listings: in Venice, out of 8,469 listings, 68.6% of hosts have multiple listings; in Barcelona, out of 18,302 listings, 67.1% of hosts have multiple listings; and in Los Angeles, out of 44,504 listings, 57.8% of hosts have multiple listings.
That doesn’t really scream the “just a person renting out their extra space” model the company likes to tout.
And I found avoiding that a lot harder than I thought it would be.
Even having spent hours trying to weed those kinds of homes out, I was fooled in London, DC, and Santa Monica: those listings existed solely to be rented out on Airbnb. Those pictures that made it seem lived in? Faked. (And the place in London, which was supposed to be a room in a guy’s house, was just a room…but in a house for Airbnb guests.)
All that time spent trying to do the right thing…and I still failed!
As this happened over and over again, I thought to myself: Is it time to break up with Airbnb? Was using Airbnb was worth the cost it exacts on residents and the time spent trying to find gems in vain?
Being a responsible traveler is really important to me — but not contribute to the problems Airbnb causes.
Airbnb is one of the biggest drivers of overtourism. It has created a lot of new accommodation for travelers, which in turn contributes to higher tourism numbers.3 On the one hand, that’s good: cheaper accommodation = more tourists = more revenue. But, when unregulated and combined with the issues highlighted above, increased tourism kills the very places we love. It becomes a vicious cycle: more tourists = more money = more properties on Airbnb = fewer local residents. However, thankfully, as I highlight in this article, a lot of locales are fighting back and beginning to restrict the service.
Moreover, the company doesn’t really take action against hosts behave badly. From spying on guests to denying last-minute bookings to substandard conditions to fake reviews, complaints against hosts go unattended until they become news stories like this:
Airbnb quietly shut down a top host amid scathing reviews, but hundreds of guests were left to stay with him
Airbnb Has a Hidden-Camera Problem
A disturbing video of a violent Airbnb host is reigniting fears of racism in the sharing economy
‘Which monkey is gonna stay on the couch?’: Airbnb host kicks out black guests in racist exchange
British couple spends $11,800 on Airbnb rental in Ibiza that doesn’t exist
As such, I’ve found the customer service to be really terrible and slanted toward hosts. There are a lot of protections for hosts but not guests. If I cancel, I have to pay a fee. If the host cancels, there’s little punishment. When talking about my recent experiences with Airbnb on Twitter and Facebook, I found I was not alone. A lot of people have noticed a decline in the quality of the service lately. They still use it, but I was surprised that so many people didn’t do so as much as they used to. Here are some examples:
Super cool how consistently my Airbnb bookings for conferences (WWDC, now XOXO) get canceled by the host the week before the conference (presumably to make more cash by raising the rate).
— Sebastiaan de With (@sdw) September 1, 2019
My Airbnb host cancelled 48 hours before I was supposed to arrive for a two-month stay. Now I am left homeless and have received no help or compensation. This is ridiculous @Airbnb @AirbnbHelp
— Raimee (@doitallabroad) August 31, 2019
There are plenty of people who are still having wonderful experiences with the service. As a whole, I still like it. There are some hidden gems, wonderful people, and cool experiences on the website, especially when you get out of the big cities.
But, given the social problems it causes, the poor customer service, the hassle of dealing with hosts, the crapshoot in quality, the cleaning and other fees that make the service’s costs on par with traditional accommodation options, I’d often rather just book a regular hostel, hotel, or B&B. Those are simple, easy, and straightforward. (And, unlike the Airbnb I had in D.C., will come with rooms that actually lock!)
I don’t want to contribute to overtourism. I don’t want to price residents out of their homes. I don’t give my money to a company that doesn’t want to be a responsible stakeholder. (I haven’t even got to the lengths the company goes to fight against oversight, taxes, and regulation.)
And I don’t have all day to spend finding a room!
And I’m not the only one having second thoughts. Look at this survey I conducted on Twitter about using the service:
In light of my recent tweet on @Airbnb (and some ones from the past), I'm curious:
Do you use Airbnb?
— Nomadic Matt (@nomadicmatt) August 31, 2019
Those are not numbers I’d want to see if I was Airbnb. It’s clear, for most of us, the sentiment has shifted away from the service as it’s become more commercialized.
I’m not fully ready to give up on the service quite yet. I still think you can find some hidden gems and meet some great people.
And maybe their upcoming IPO will change its ways by bringing in new stockholders, activist investors, and more attention (stockholders don’t like negative news stories that lowers their stock price!).
Then again, maybe it won’t, and Airbnb will only get worse and I’ll have to stop using it altogether.
Only time will tell.
But I think the situation is bad enough where one needs to be wary of the service and use it with extreme care.
It’s not the same as it used to be.
Notes: 1: Since my team and I have been using the website a lot this year, we’re updating our guide to Airbnb to reflect changes in the service. It will be out in a few weeks.
2: You can also find another study done by California State University here.
3: Airbnb is not the prime cause of overtourism, but it definitely contributes greatly; the company’s desire to turn a blind eye to the problem is part of my problem with it.
Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks
Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner or Momondo. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe, so you always know no stone is being left unturned.
Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the largest inventory. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com, as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. I use them both all the time.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it, as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. I’ve been using World Nomads for ten years. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
World Nomads (for everyone below 70)

How to Redesign an Airline
Look up and you’ll know: Air Canada is in the black.
Black bellies are part of its bold, sharp brand-wide redesign by Winkcreative, one both granular (the most gorgeous route map in the biz) and grand (its iconic 1962 rondelle is back). The shop, headed by Tyler Brûlé, has become something of an airline agency. Having renovated Bombardier, Porter Airlines, José Balazs’ StndAir, and Swiss Air, Winkcreative is currently tackling Air Canada, the 300-plus fleet of national carriers celebrating their 80th anniversary. We spoke with Maurus Fraser, their creative director, about what goes into redesigning an airline.
The color black is used throughout the airline’s design color scheme, which is rare for airlines.
What stands out immediately about the Air Canada redesign is the unexpected stark black component. Can you talk about how that came into the mix and how you decided to get out of the red and white colors that Air Canada has been in for a long time?
The opportunity that we saw was to really celebrate the rondelle. Air Canada had a mark designed in 1963 by Hans Kleefeld, the famous Canadian graphic designer, and they had this icon which companies would die for, and they’ve had this for so long. To not have that on the tail of the plane kind of felt like a missed opportunity. Maple leaves are quite used in Canada—you get a maple leaf in the middle of the golden arches of the McDonald’s. They put them on many things.
How did you pick the black color?
We had several versions of black: How black is black? Is it cold black? Is it warm black? When we were looking at the tones that we could use on the plane we had to work with Boeing, with the Boeing colors and they’ve got quite a small palette. Well, they’ve got sort of a wide palette, but it’s limited when you’re in certain color ranges. There was this jet black, which was just perfect for what we wanted.
Black is heavy on the eye, but it’s also literally heavy in an engineering standpoint. In an industry that wants lightness, weightlessness, was that a tough decision to make?
Black is a pigment and actually it’s not heavier than a white, as long as you have an opaque color painted on a plane. You could argue that maybe black absorbs a little bit more heat, but even in those circumstances the aircraft has been designed so powerfully, like most vehicles, that they’re designed to handle these kinds of heats and it doesn’t necessarily get absorbed that much. So we’ve been assured that it’s no heavier in all practicality. There’s a slight metallic fleck that gives it a pearlescent effect, which is actually slightly heavy and going to the clean, just the clean white, not overlaying too many colors, does actually make it much more efficient.
So you’re right. This is at the forefront of all the airlines minds, when the paint’s being painted the engineers are testing the depth of the paint; it can’t be painted at too much depth and the use of black on planes is incredibly rare. You don’t see it. There’s Air New Zealand, and there’s a great airline in Japan called StarFlyer, which is very cool, using black. But no one’s really been using it in this way that we’re doing.
It’s interesting that you mention New Zealand because they just did that flag redesign attempt that kind of went nowhere, but they had that Māori fern design. This black, white and red combination palette can be very tribal; it’s the same sort of color palette that you see on a lot of Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, totem poles.
We’ve definitely been looking at those influences, especially when you look at the nose mask that we’ve designed. We looked at, and studied the shapes of, an indigenous bird, a common loon, that has a red eye. The nose mask is a symbol of confidence and the use of black is charming because it has a bit of personality celebrating the cockpit. The pilot is a key part of this experience and nobody today really celebrates the cockpit and the pilot, although I guess years ago they did, in the World War II planes.
An airline redesign is not just object design or industrial design. It’s also fashion, interior decoration, and architecture. How did you address that breadth?
One of the things we were careful of is rondelle fever. You shouldn’t have rondelles everywhere. It’s scaling things down. Sometimes, you can get to a point where you have a successful symbol and you use it on everything. Then before you know it, you’ve got 10 of them on one application and you’re just scratching your head.
Did Winkcreative have an all hands on deck approach? Or did you bring in any extra staff?
We have been directing a team based in Canada called Mosaic. When it comes to illustration, we’ve been working with a Japanese illustrator. Working alongside our designers and art directors, we have a team of art buyers that help us find illustrators, photographers, film makers, and animators. When we’re working on identities, we’re very careful that we don’t want things to be repetitive. If we’re working with one collaborator on one project, it’s not necessarily the best person to be working with on another.
The Air Canada redesign included the attire, too.
Did you have lessons that you brought over from being in the airline redesign business, lessons you didn’t realize you had learned until you were unconsciously, subconsciously applying them to the Air Canada project?
Yes. When we were designing Swiss Airlines In 2002, there was a lot of experimentation happening in airline design. British Airways was doing all these different art techniques from different countries. It was very exciting from a design perspective. From a branding perspective, however, it was too much of a compromise for British Airways, because they had planes flying through air that people didn’t ultimately recognize were from British Airways.
When an entity like Air Canada acts as an unofficial ambassador for how their country is perceived around the world, how do you take that responsibility and apply it to tastefully redesigning something like the seat pocket sick bags?
We’re still in the process of working on those pieces, but there’s a series of elements that we’re working on for the brand where we exaggerate a little bit of that character and charm.
One of my favorite redesigns is the worldwide flight path map on that red graphing paper. It’s very clean, linear, with a circuit board kind of look. Very 70s or 80s, in a good way. How’d that happen?
It goes back to the golden age of travel and the things that inspired us when we go on a plane. Everything was so sharp. All the touchpoints were so well designed. When you look at most airlines, their route maps, it’s a photograph or some sort of image of the world. And then there’s these huge kind of lines that always overlap, and you can’t tell which line is going where. You know its gotten to a point where airlines don’t care.
We drew Air Canada’s route map in-house, probably spending far too much time pouring over each of those routes and angles. It’s a strong moment and opportunity for an airline to communicate to their customers. The moment you get to the pages in the in-flight magazines and you see the route map, that’s when you’re inspired to go somewhere and realize how convenient and simple it is to go there. Air Canada is really enabling you to do that.
Your design will reach a wide range of people, from those traveling to Canada for the first time to the road warriors for whom the plane has become as familiar as an office cubicle. What impact do you hope the design has across the spectrum of flyers?
To ultimately improve people’s lives. That’s an ambition that I think most designers share. If design can make your everyday life just that much bit better, then why not right?
There are some design similarities to Delta’s new branding. To what degree is that coincidental, or was Winkreative inspired by things Delta did?
Delta is a very different design and not something that influenced our work. Our use of red, white and black, the introduction of the mask, placing the rondelle back on the tail— after 24 years—and the distinctive rondelle on the belly, are not something we have seen before.
