Chris Miles (01:29): Alright! So today I’ve got a special guest and you know, I keep finding some interesting people and this is definitely no exception. You know, this was somebody who reached out and said, Hey, you gotta have Grant Aldrich on your show because you know, it’s funny, my wife had actually even brought up about, you know, doing online degrees, but even like having ways to have it paid for. And I thought that was intriguing. And within the same week that she said that someone says, Hey, you need to have Grant on your show. So that’s what I got. Guys. I have grant here with us and just to let you know, grant actually runs a company OnlineDegree.com and now he founded this one. It was a real purpose driven mission, right? The mission is this, to make college more accessible and affordable for everyone.

Chris Miles (02:13): Now, after graduating college with an overwhelming amount of debt. Grant was actually determined to change how students embark on their college education. He has spent his entire career working at startups with nearly 15 years of experience and two prior exits to a publicly traded company. He’s also been a board member and donor to a number of non-profits and advisor to many public traded companies and a guest speaker at seminars and graduate school courses. And today, well, especially when I bring him on and say, all right, whether you’re someone you’ve got kids or whether it’s yourself and you’re thinking about going and get your degree again, how can you do it in a way where you don’t have to go to pay millions of dollars to make crappy amounts of money? And so that’s why we have a Grant here on our show today. So grant welcome!

Grant Aldrich (02:54): Hey, Chris! Thanks for having me!

Chris Miles (02:55): Absolutely, man. So tell us about your story and what inspired this. Like you mentioned that you went through a lot of debt, right? You know, tell us more about that.

Grant Aldrich (03:03): Yeah. I left college with just an immense amount of debt and I seemingly made all of the right choices. So I took a traditional path. Graduated high school. Went to the best school I could get to. And I even came in with AP courses and all kinds of things that had me graduate as a sophomore. So I had a year already finished and I still graduated with just a ton of debt. And that left a real mark on me for many years because I didn’t pay it off until my late twenties. And I was in a position recently where I had exited my last company and I really was sitting around trying to figure out, what do I want to do to make a big difference and enjoy my work far more than I had before?

Grant Aldrich (03:50): And I just kept coming to higher Ed. My parents were teachers and a bad taste in my mouth that had been sitting there for so long and everything just kind of came together to try to make higher education, more affordable, more accessible.

Chris Miles (04:04): Yeah. How did that even come to be for you guys?

Grant Aldrich (04:08): You know, this was definitely a meandering approach. I just started with the mission. And I think that’s a really cool thing to do as an entrepreneur. You just start with a mission. I want to make college affordable and accessible. And I didn’t know how we were going to do it. It was definitely something I stumbled upon and tried to figure out. And finally, we came to, we’re going to create a modern alternative to the community college. And so people can come on the platform. Get started in 60 seconds. Take as many college level courses as they’d like. Earn credit towards their degree at universities across the country. We do it all for free.

Chris Miles (04:44): Now, how is that possible?

Grant Aldrich (04:45): It was just to kind of complete it. Not only do we provide all this for free, we provide support services. We organize discounts for our students on their behalf. So for example, you come in, take a bunch of units that can lower the cost of your degree, but then we go above and beyond that and get the universities to give you another discount. So you may get 10%, 20% off the cost of your degree just from coming through our program. And so to answer your question, how do we do it, you kind of have to look into the dynamic of how the system works. So the benefit for the student is probably obvious, right? I’ve got, instead of just making this big leap to go back in getting your degree, paying full price and having to just figure it out on the go, we provide an option to wait in the pool where you could save a bunch of money sometimes up to 30% 40% of your degree.

Grant Aldrich (05:34): And to give it a kind of, you know, kick the tires a bit, see what classes are of interest, you know, get used to learning in an online format. Prove you’ve got the time management, all that. That benefits probably obvious. What people don’t realize, it’s an immense benefit for the universities as well. So for the universities, it’s a little known fact that they are desperate for good students. And when I say good, I mean, students who will finish their program. Who are prepared when they show up. Who don’t need a lot of orientation programs on how to learn online and how to make sure they work courses into their daily life. It’s really valuable. So inherently when you’re going through progressing through the courses, you’re making yourself a better student. So the entire platform is sponsored by the universities to make it a true win-win for the student and the school.

Chris Miles (06:26): Interesting. Yeah. I can see when they’re college, that’s a big deal. Especially if they want that, the impressive numbers show that people actually graduate and finishing complete. Right? Versus, you know, it’s like, you know, University of Hawaii, where people used to go on vacation, then drop out. You know.

Grant Aldrich (06:41): Yeah. I wish we all could go to University of Hawaii and just skip class all day.

Chris Miles (06:45): That’s the one place you won’t go to do online education.

Grant Aldrich (06:48): No! Definitely not! Yeah. More like, you know, upstate New York where it’s nice and cold. Right? But yeah. So the whole process, getting people back to school and doing it this way has just been really successful. It’s just really worked because it’s really created a whole new paradigm.

Chris Miles (07:05): Yeah. And who funds this? Like how is this funded?

Grant Aldrich (07:08): All by the university partnerships. So, you know, when I first started, I looked at doing a non-profit. And the problem is, is that, there’s actually a lot of rules on how non-profits were able to generate revenue. And so I didn’t want a system where we would be, couldn’t do tuition. Right? I wanted no tuition. That was a key thing. And I didn’t want to be dependent upon donations. And so if you’re non-profit, you take revenue in certain ways you can lose your non-profit status. So I decided, Nope, we’re just going to keep it. We’re a benefit Corp. And we’re going to make it funded completely by the universities.

Chris Miles (07:41): Great! And now, I know what you have as a tagline says, The First Years For Free. Is it just the first year or is it the entire college experience? And how does that work?

Grant Aldrich (07:50): It could actually be more than the first year. You know, we’ve tried, because we’re a new concept and it’s a little different. And you know, I made that comparison to a community college, which is something everybody knows. But we are different because you know, when you come on our platform, you could take one course. You could take all 15 that we offer. And you could then still get the discount on different schools. So it’s far more flexible than a community college. In terms of that flexibility, you don’t have to go to class. It’s all online at your own pace. So the goal was to make something where I looked at the community college systems thing. This is a very rigid system. What if I don’t want to get my full associates degree? What if I just want to get a little bit, save, and then go to the right school of my choosing? Or what if I want something that’s more accessible from my heavy work life and my family life and all these things. So really that’s what I tried to design a better system for. And so, yeah, I mean, anybody can come in, they can take one class or you can save up as much as 40% on your degree, depending on the school you go to. And the discounts that we have.

Chris Miles (08:52): Wow! That’s incredible! Well, like you said, it’s great that people have working schedule if they already have their own business or they’re already going, you know, they’re working all the time. Like they don’t want to spend a lot of time. They want to be able to do at their own pace and that sort of thing. Right? It sounds like you’ve definitely provided a solution for that.

Grant Aldrich (09:07): That’s it. This is built for the working adults. So something people don’t realize is that working adults have become the real students in higher education. Not the 18 year old. And there’s an estimated 35 to 40 million of those adults who are not taking that first step. So I really tried to create a solution that just met all the impediments that were stopping people from getting started. And yeah, you’re right. One of them is that, Hey, we’re busy. Adults are busy. We’ve got kids, got jobs, you’ve got responsibilities. We can’t leave all of that three times a week to go to class in the middle of the day. Not conducive for what we’re doing. It’s gotta be 30 minutes while we’re cooking dinner. 30 minutes on the couch at night. That has to be conducive to that learning environment. And then of course the cost. If you’re not 18 years old, you can’t amortize the cost of a degree over your lifetime like you can when you’re young. We’re thirties, forties, we have to be able to get an affordable degree that will actually help us get a better career. That’s not going to break the bank. And so I think really what we’ve done too, is balanced the ROI of getting a degree now. And the cost.

Chris Miles (10:13): Right! Exactly! And that’s been one of my biggest hangups with school, right? Cause I dropped out of college with what, not even a class. It was a project, one project away from getting my bachelor’s. Right? And then I decided to go into being an entrepreneur just to gain that experience that was going to go to the business consulting. So I was going to finish my MBA. And by after I went to the business, I said, well, what the heck? These degrees seem worthless, you know. In comparison to how much time and money I have to put into this, versus I can just go out and make money no. You know, as an entrepreneur. And that definitely was more enticing. And this kind of seems like it’s a good hybrid between the two. It’s like saying, Hey, do I want to get the ROI? Plus the time I have to put, by the way, I did try to actually go and finish my degree. Five years later. And they said, all right, great, well, you just have to take another semester and a half of full time credits. Cause it had been over five years. I said, well, forget that, you know, there’s no reason I should get a sociology degree and have to spend a year and a half going full time to school when I was already retired, you know? So, Oh yeah. Make logical sense at that point, right?

Grant Aldrich (11:17): Oh yeah. Well, you know, the other problem is, Is that so many schools out there are not adult friendly, which is what you’re kind of touching on. And so the other thing that we’ve done is we’ve tried to only partner with schools that are adult friendly. And so to that point, you know, what does adult friendly mean? These are schools that aren’t going to give you a lot of sweat for being five years out of the classroom. They look past that. They’re far more accommodating to the modern adult or working adult. And so they view a lot more support for working adults. The classes are online. The restaurant pays, you know, all those things that help and not give you the experience that you had. But you’re right, you know, for a bigger perspective, not everybody needs to get a degree. Some careers, you should have it because you had the edge for your job and you can get that big promotion.

Grant Aldrich (12:01): Or if it’s a necessity. Like if I want to be a teacher. But for you and I, you know, we’re both entrepreneurs. What’s great is that what we’ve now branched out to is into certifications. And so in addition to degrees, we offer discounted certifications with credit universities that are better than anything else out there. Where, let’s say you want to be a bookkeeper. Well, you can get a certification with a certificate from the university, for your clients in book keeping with Quick Books and all of this. To basically just prepare you for a career as being your own boss. So that way, you know, you’ve got something. You don’t have to be a CPA. You’ve got something. When you go into that room, when you’re pitching your new clients, you know, I’m certified by University of X and it looks really good. So I’m glad we’ve really added that. So I think it’s complimented the situations that you’re talking about, where not everybody needs a degree.

Chris Miles (12:50): Right. That’s true. Now you mentioned, of course it’s perfect for the working adult. What about for those that are the typical young adult college age? You know, is this a good fit for them? Cause I know again, a ton of people that will say, how do I pay for college? How do I save for college, all this kind of stuff. And so I guarantee you there’s many, many listeners saying, all right, I may not need a degree, but what about my kids?

Grant Aldrich (13:12): Yeah. You know, it is. Although it hasn’t been open for them. I’ll explain why. When we first got started, I had the working adult in mind. So we purposely excluded it to anybody who was under 18 or any international students. And my logic was, was that I wanted to make sure we came out of the gate for our first MVP product, that we had a really good experience for that core demographic. And since then it’s just exploded. And so now we’re going back and saying, okay, we can expand now and go into high school students international because we get so many students knocking on the door saying we want it. In fact, for every one adult now that we have in, three knock on the door that we turn away who are either international or under 18. And so it’s a big problem. Yeah. So we’re working on now working out the intricacies of now opening up the platform for all those people. It’s not ready yet. Soon!

Chris Miles (14:07): Soon. So if they got somebody who’s in their mid teens, this is probably the perfect time.

Grant Aldrich (14:12): Yeah! So I would say, you know, check back maybe after the summer. We’ll be good to go.

Chris Miles (14:16): Okay. That’s pretty soon.

Grant Aldrich (14:17): Yeah, yeah, yeah. Very actively working on it.

Chris Miles (14:19): That’s great! Awesome! Well this is fantastic! I know it’s a, just like incredible niche, you know, that just to see that that’s even available and even possible for people to even get, you know, the ability to even take some courses and essential, not only have they come out of pocket initially. Right? I think that’s just incredible. So if people want to learn more about it, where should they go?

Grant Aldrich (14:40): Well, Chris, thank you man! And you know, it really is trying to just spread the word about it that, you know, in addition to what we do, there are a bunch of other little known secrets on how you can save college. You know, cause I think so many people fall into the trap where they just go in the front door and they just accept the fact, that’s it got to pay full time tuition. And the only ways to save previously were scholarships or community college. And both of those have tons of problems. They’re terrible options for an adult to try to do. And I can go into that later, but anyhow, yeah. Chris Miles (15:24): Great! Okay. We got to open it up for a few more minutes for sure. So grants or whatever you’re talking about right there. Like what are the non traditional ways that people might miss out on? You don’t have to give all the details, all the secrets, but just give us a few.

Grant Aldrich (15:38): Yeah. You know, you almost have to look at going back to higher ed as like you’re hacking your way through. And I mean that in a good way. Yeah. Cause you’re taking pieces off the shelf from numerous destinations. So what’s kind of good by starting in our platform is that we provide a good base. So, okay. Let’s say we aggregate all the adult friendly schools. So you know, which ones are the ones that are going to treat you the way that you would assume you’d be treated, going back to school. And so you start there and then we can map out what courses you can take for free. Then we can look at what kind of discounts are available that you can take advantage of at the different institutions. And then from there, we also compliment that this is something that most people don’t know, there’s these exams you can take where it’s not like an AP exam.

Grant Aldrich (16:23): It’s not as hard as that is, but they’re all about subject matter expertise where you can test out of a course. And so you can take, instead of taking, let’s say a full semester, long class on, you know, we can make this up, but history one. You can take, we have a history course. So this isn’t exactly the same. You can knock it out with our history course. But to give the example, you could take a prep course, right online, just short term. Take this exam and then remove the requirement when you come to school. So little techniques like this, just chip away at the amount of units you have to take at the actual university. Cause at the end of the day, you have to get, let’s say 120 units to get your bachelor’s degree at a college. And each course is three, four units, et cetera. The more that you can finish for free or at a discount rather than paying full price for tuition at that school, the better.

Chris Miles (17:13): That’s true. I remember, cause I lived for two years in Japan during my college years. Right? So I came back my sophomore year of college and they said, Hey, you can test out of this. And so I essentially got like 16 language arts credits. You know, for no charge. I was just able to get that knocked out. Right. And you know, kind of accelerate a little bit to the bachelors. I still had to take a bunch of more courses, but at least I was able to say, all right, well that’s off the list now. I’ve got plenty of, almost had too many credits by the time I was getting my bachelors, you know?

Grant Aldrich (17:43): That’s fantastic! Yeah. That’s a good example actually. Right. You know, you don’t take a language class if you’re comfortable enough with the language. You could test out of it. Yeah. Great example.

4. And welcome to my channel, It's great to have each of you still with me- A man who speaks of people By their purpose, Himself as his own singer, With- such are the seasons, Even, holy convocations, For want to be sure of a constant, It's Senhal, An obscure term For an old friend.

5. Love, love, lo, this is not Of a cloven love, Leviticus, I will speak of it Unto sundry strangers and neighbours, As just one more month's dusk Then it'll be passover, Not once. Not twice, Not once. Love. So we can still imagine a time When all of this will go again;

By buying-up dozens of potential plots, They help to plot the exodus to less, And stake an astronaut over the shape of a woman. But politics isn’t about the weird worship of one dude, So his words became their actions.

23.  Is it worth your time To try and ignore that, if, What you are listening to Is  the most effective form of advertising- A babbling of a technique That hath impostulated language, Then, should things go well, We may even be able to rend a cross-paracleation With phantom trust-collaborators, Interested in guest-posting for backlinks and exposure, Thus, marrying into micro-influencers, And so tap into our y.

24. But be consistent: For my favourite casts come out the same- Here, crowdplain how a seventh month is a Sound the trumpet month; See how it goes? Lo, but half of me struggles with the whimsy Of the other side that's yet so entranced; No, I'm not sure why, it's just the way I feel.

25. Down tools, more please. Gnaw your own head off. All things positivity- and It is always negotiation; Not: You bring it to the tabernacle, I sing- There is no shortness of spirit In opinion To be cut down. Equal positives, so unto Those things that keep not happening.

CHAPTER 01 - NYX

Another event. How many of these was there going to be this season? Not like she didn't enjoy going out on the company's dime and making others cry; in excitement or fear she couldn't care less their why - she just wished she could head to the Demon without it being for anything other than just for fun. No ulterior motives necessary.

Over looking the bustling city, smoke flitted and weaved it's way between buildings matching in height to the one she lived in and then others kept going up. Sol was caught off guard and thrown from her internal thoughts when a member of her makeup artist and friend nudged her shoulder and winked before continuing their conversation from before Sol drifted off in her own head.

 "What's the point of ghosts? If they're not gonna fuck me, get outta my house!" Sol couldn't help but release a laugh that was very un-Nyx like, but very on brand to her actual self. The others around laughed harder at the noise.

 "Vespa, what the fuck?"

"That's what I'm sayin'! Why won't they fuck me?!" Vespa continued with a hearty laugh and Sol watched her Adam's apple bob with the motion.

 "Oh, come now,-" the brunette woman in flashy Lava World fashion chuckled from behind her hand, which happened to be intricately embellished with dark and light ink that faintly glowed like the molten debris underneath their world. 'LED tattoos are THE thing. Everyone's gonna want them' she assured Sol once before and Sol has thoroughly considered the process. Maybe something subtle? Something that meant something to her? 'A spider perhaps?' She mused, a telling smirk upon her lips.

 "Yeah, I would if I could, Asteria," Vespa cackled in that deep voice of hers. Gods, how having a drag queen was the best thing in the universe, and Sol thanked them all that she was blessed with the best of the best.

 There was a loud knock coming from the front door and without giving notice to come in a man waltzed in, hand to his left ear and a holopad in hand. "Yes, yes, Nyx will be there," he turned his gaze to the group in front of him and snapped his fingers in rapid succession. "No," he stressed more focused on Sol than anything, "She won't be late this time," the racer in question rolled her eyes, making a gagging motion with her slender finger down her throat. The other ladies around her tried to stifle their laughs, "You have my word" And with that he pressed a button in his ear, and maneuvered something around on the holopad before speaking up again, "Ladies…" a displeased grimace on his face.

 "Aw, what's the matter now, honey? You lookin' to get dicked down?" Vespa was all but devouring the LAZER agent. Sashaying around him, making damn sure to trail her fingers across his shoulders and down his chest. He was flustered, still not quite sure on how to handle being hit on by a man in drag - and good fucking drag too. So, he opted to just clearing his throat as she walked to stand back behind the racer.

 Sol rolled her molten eyes before fixing them to her agent, "Allryn, whatdaya want? Miss me already?" A flippant smile greeted him.

 He pouted and brought his free hand to his chest, "Solana you wound me. I could never stray from you too far for too long. But since you asked," immediately there was swipes and typing taking place as he quickly accessed the holopad, "The higher ups want to guarantee that you will show up at the event tonight." She just deadpanned and gestured to the people around her, makeup brushes and fashion ware in hand and lying about the room.

 "Nope. Just felt like making a mess of my home."

 "Hahaa, Sol. You're ride is going to be here within the hour, ladies is that enough time?"

"An hour? The event isn't for another 3 or so. What gives?" But Allryn brushed her questions aside as if he were dusting off his blazer. The two shared looks with one another, then to Sol, then to Allryn and back at one another all in the span of 3 seconds, "Yeah, we should be good to go."

 "Photo opportunities, Sol. The event isn't open to everyone and those who were not … fortunate enough to purchase the VIP tickets are stuck outside. You will make an appearance to them before heading inside. And please make sure to stay in character." Another eye roll and Sol swore she was seeing stars.

  "So, chop chop. Oh, and ladies," they turned to look at their boss, "Make sure she's exceptionally Nyxian tonight."

 ---

 Music blared and bass bumped, enough to shake the outer walls and sidewalk outside Neon Demon. It wasn't anything new, however Sol couldn't help but think that they were pulling out all the stops for tonight in particular. There was going to be a more diverse crowd attending tonight after all; and they wanna be on everyone's good side.

'it's just good business…' she thought. Steeling herself, she masked all emotions, turning what would be a normal smirk on her day to day basis into one that was positively twisted.

 Her handler, aka bodyguard, opened the door and offered a hand for the Villainess. Turning her gaze to him quickly she offered the slightest of nods in recognition. It wouldn't behoove her, or LAZER for that matter, if she's seen showing kindness - even to her personal entourage. He just let out a gruff noise from the back of his throat, closed the car door with a resounding thud, fixed his suit jacket and made to follow after her.

 There was already such a large throng of people outside Demon. She expected as much when Allryn mentioned fans who couldn't make it in to tonight's high end event. It was clear to see where the fandoms began and ended - agency and racer colors indicated the fans positions. And it was all too obvious that the other agencies were outnumbered by LAZERs, given that they were in their hometown.

 Making her way down the stamped and stained concreted path, Sol zeroed in on her fans specifically. The weirdest of the weird. Either extremely terrified or extremely devoted to the Villainess. Both derived some sort of sick perversions out of it all. Honestly though, Sol was pretty desensitized to it all. It hadn't always been that way, but she got over it about a few years ago when she broke that one fan's nose for being a little too … familiar with her.

 Her Aleksandar McQuinth (hehee I had to) studded and chained, front laced platform boots held a thick and powerful sound as they made contact with the damp ground beneath her. Her hips swayed and the little black dress she wore exposed her long legs in all their glory. Onyx spikes decorated the only shoulder covered as it was draped with silver chains.

 Walking towards her designated fanbase was the easy part. It was now time to play the part. The part that she was born for essentially. The part of villain - the main antagonist. Nyx! Nyx! Nyx! Nyx! Their voices chanted like a prayer, as if she were divine enough to come down and bless them. As if she would give them a second thought.

 A beautifully crafted wicked smirk fell upon her lips as she stood in a power stance. Legs, shoulder width apart, hands on her hips as she leaned most of her weight to her right side. Nyx! Nyx! Nyx! Nyx! A cackle of a laugh echoed over their heads as she spoke to them, their voices dimming to nothing short of a whisper. Hanging on to ever word she uttered and breathing it in as if it were life.

 Leni always mentioned, ever since Sol signed on to LAZER, that her followers were nothing short of masochists. And in this moment, as a vast majority of them were screaming for Nyx to step on them, to whip them, put them to shame and dominate them - she agreed wholeheartedly. Not like she ever doubted her friend before. It just … never ceases to amaze her with how many more weirdos they recruit to The Cult of Nyx or Nyxian Cult or just the Cult as they're referred to more often than not.

 ---

 The scene inside the Neon Demon was nothing short of decked out. The raised dais was coordinated in a way to incorporate the different agencies - so as not to leave anyone out. "Entitled little shits," Sol commented, eyeing the elaborate crystals and ice luge that was placed precariously in the center of Twilight's booth.

 "Heya Nyx~ Tha usual?" Sol didn't even need to acknowledge the bouncy silver haired girl behind the bar and she didn't seem too fazed at the blatant curve from one of her top customers. Instead the cheery bartender just went about her merry way making sure the bar was stocked and clean for the mass of people about to arrive. And as if on cue, there was a commotion coming from the entrance, and Sol checked the small digital clock behind the bar top. The game was about to begin and here came the pawns. "Surprise me," Sol spoke slowly, leaning backwards, head nearly touching the bar top. Razor straight hair pooling around her, illuminating her eyes even more so.

 The girl giggled and set about making a LAZER racer special, "Magma" it was called and boy, did it look it. Sol swiped it up with the grace of a shadow and sauntered her way through the crowd, effectively passing Allryn as she did so.

 He muttered a name, loud enough for her to catch it and if anyone else were to hear it they'd brush it off as him looking for said person. Her lips curved upwards into her devious trademark and slipped between the patrons filing in, mingling with one another.

 Neleus Clevoy. Head CEO of CyberTECH, one of the leading manufacturers for robot horses, supplying the RUR industry with the best of the best AI and technology to go with it. Apparently, he's been a bad boy, and Nyx has been sent to … punish him. A side of the part she plays that she doesn't care for, but won't turn down.

 It wasn't her first time. Nor was he her first. It seemed to be a recurring meet up for the two and Sol had long since wondered if it was just because he was enthralled with her and the … services she could provide. However, tonight was going to be different. She had been set on that for a long time. A new year, new Sol, err, well, Nyx.

 "Mr. Clevoy~" She practically purred in his ear as she leaned against him, molten eyes catching the lights above, illuminating them to goddess status. She slid one hand up his chest, the other to slide up to rest around his broad shoulders. His attention was caught easily enough and it was way too easy for Sol to slip something into his drink as she moved her arm around his shoulders. No one around the wiser. A lil bit of hallucinogenic liquid; Synthesia or Synth on the streets, to get him loose-y goose-y is the perfect scene causing disruption this party needs. Now all Sol had to do was wait.

 She walked away with the grace of a [panther], leaving Clevoy a little more than pissed but otherwise incapacitated. He wouldn't dare risk his marriage or image to storm after a racer - even one as villainous as Nyx. Her eyes scanned the dais looking for a new target - preferably someone from an opposing agency - whether one of the big 3 or not - the other, unknown racers were some of the best to torment - when she caught sight of the prettiest flower in the meadow.

 Downing her drink, she slinked her way between the patrons, never letting her gaze waver. The few steps it took to ascend into view was worth it to see the look on Aura's face, especially with the way she called her name.

 "Sol?" She loved hearing her name. It's one of the few things in this life of hers that she gets to claim and enjoy without anyone tarnishing it. A foolish thought at the least. It's only a matter of time before LAZER claims that too, isn't it?

 Sol hadn't seen the little Flower for awhile now, and she made mention of it, sweeping an errant lock of long, dark hair over her bare shoulder. A low wink on her part. Aura released a laugh that to Sol sounded like tinkling bells in a summer wind and she was transported back to their last encounter. She sat there and made idle small talk about how they needed to catch up - Sol definitely would love that and she said as much. Hoping to rile up the younger. It seemed to have worked for a light blush dusted her cheeks - even in that ridiculous getup of hers. But, alas, the things they're forced to do for the sake of appearances and branding.

 Allryn was frantically waving his arms attempting to catch Sol's attention. He wore a face of absolute bitterness and it almost made her laugh out loud. Almost. Instead, another eye roll before smirking at the Flower under her taloned hand, "I told him I was coming over here to try and make you cry." A shoulder shrug here and a wink there, she continued, "I'll just tell him you worked some of your fairy magic on me, and now I'm nice."

 Not long after and she was leaving the dais to her end, searching as she went about for a new target to destroy.

 Throughout the night Nyx was pulled this way and that for photo ops, marketing pitches - one in particular she adored, the potential model for Noxian; a company with their bio-metric fingers in literally everything; from music to racing tech, to clothing to energy drinks - new branding ideas and just all around Nyxian events. There was a small, minute pause in all the hustling around that Sol was able to slip away from clawing fans - that she effectively destroyed on the spot with some scathing words and a look that could melt the strongest of metals.

 Swinging by the bar, she snagged someone else's drink, not like they were going to stop her, she continued on to her target. Sidling up next to the one person she's been looking forward to running into the most at this lackluster event. Her eyes darted every which way, taking in her features. They're as beautiful and sharp as ever. She misses the days and nights where it was just the two of them. Enjoying the other's company. Laying there, limbs tangled up in one another.

 Gold tipped fingers reached out and touched her shoulder. Almost as if Sol was trying to root herself to this plain of existence. To remember that she was real. That their pasts were real. She honestly didn't want to let her go, but the look she was given nearly pushed her back, "I was wondering where you'd run off to." It wasn't a lie, but she could have delivered it a bit more … Sol like.

 The glare sent shivers up and down her spine and Sol wasn't sure if it was a good thing or not. Definitely not the first time she's seen it directed at her. And it won't be the last, that's for damn sure. Leni made an offhand comment, which would have made her scoff if it weren't for the scrutinizing gazes they were surely garnishing from fans and agents alike.

 Leni finally made to turn around enough to look her in the eyes and it took everything in her to not audibly suck in a breath. Widowmaker's hard, long stare softened, if only for a moment as they locked gazes. And it was as if time ceased to ruin everything. At least, that's what she had hoped was the same feeling her long time friend and lover experienced.

 "… I'm busy," Sol caught the tail end of that one. Snapping herself outta it, she released her hold on her teammate and took the glass from her hands, bringing it to her gold painted lips to take a small sip. It's this time a physical reaction is pulled from her as she makes the most ridiculous face. "It never gets any less vile. Would it kill you to order ginger ale?" She chuckles it off, passing it back to her friend.

 "No one asked you to come over here and drink it, Nyx." There's a river of ice that flows through Sol at the sentence. It wasn't malicious or loud. But the levelness of her tone and the use of her racing name - regardless of the situation - it knocked Sol back a bit. No matter their differences, their arguments, their very different tastes in certain activities - Leni had never bit back at her like this. And honestly, Sol would have much rather preferred a shot to the gut.

 In an instant her entire demeanor changed. She slouches a tad bit more, a more relaxed stance, lithe and long. "Well," the coyness in her voice masking to others as playfulness, "if that's how we're playing it, I don’t have time for you either.” Adding a much deserved, “Widow.”

 “Precisely. You can go back to your adoring fans. Or to that Sky Worlder you like so much; I saw the two of you getting close back there.”

"Oh hoho~ Oh I see," a Cheshire grin that undoubtedly suits her cat like features spread across her face. And as if to drive the point home she spares a wink, "You don’t have to worry, Leni, I’ll always have time for you–” She even drove herself to grab onto her shoulder again and gave it a firm yet telling squeeze.

 Leni again gives her hand and then the owner a look that could burn, “Believe it or not, I have more important things to worry about than you.”

 She should have seen this coming, honestly. Sol knows exactly the points at which Leni's loyalties and ambitious lie. Sol's always known. And she's always admired that strength in her friend. But, Leni always, in the past at least, made time for Sol. They were always together in one way or another. And in the last few months - hell, the last year, things have dramatically shifted and not in Sol's favor.

 Hurt most definitely flashed through her body and she could only assume it made it's way to surface level. But she pushed it back and away. There was no way she was going to let anyone, least of all Leni, see that the mighty Nyx goddess of the night could get hurt because of some … words. So, she squared herself and her diabolical smirk takes over. Removing her hand from the shoulder of her teammate, it morphed into giving her the bird, turning on the spot and laughing as she calls out over her shoulder, "Get fucked, Widow!”

 She could have been the bigger person and just walked away, but that wasn't her. That wasn't Nyx either. People were already invested in the little rendezvous they were having at the bar, so might as well give them what they want. It's no surprise to anyone - least of all the fanbase - that Nyx would be an asshole to even her own teammates.  So, she handled it. Instead of standing tall and walking outta there with their head held high like most other worlders would most likely do, this was Sol, no. This was Nyx, and Nyx does things her way.

Reflections from Ahran Lee

Ahran Lee was the artist-in-residence at Mt Caz during March of 2019. She was drawn to Mt Caz for the spaciousness and slowness it could offer her as she pondered questions about what sustainability looks like for an artist in today’s culture of go-go-go. The rainy wintery days of March were much needed for all of us. We are grateful that Ahran trusted us to hold space for her residency, and we are excited for the alchemy that occurred during our time together.

Here are some reflections in her own words, after the jump:

I came to Mt. Caz to reflect on my relationship to my process. Specifically, I wanted to examine how rest affects my creative spirit. Rest and reflection are vital elements to any creative process but sorely lacked in my own. What was it about rest that seemed elusive in my practice?

Since last May I’ve been struggling with a block. I wanted to make art but the muscle memory of how I used to work wouldn’t shake, and consequently, squashed my desire to make. I was so used to making art at the expense of my mental and physical health that it was more like an addiction than an art practice. Being hyper productive at all costs was my modus operandi. I would sit at my desk for hours, back hunched over, taking little to no breaks. What drove this pattern of behavior? On an ego level, I craved a self defined identity (detached from roles of daughter, wife, and other monikers I didn’t choose but were given to me) and being an artist felt the most freeing and an accessible entry point into self-assuredness. I also wanted to belong to a community of other artists. And it seemed like nonstop production was the currency to gain access into these communities. So I worked obsessively to put my artwork on social media platforms. It promised opportunities and exposure so it seemed like a natural place to grow my artist legs. I quickly learned that social media never stops. So I didn’t want to either. It didn’t seem like my artist peers were hindered by it or let alone questioning social media’s toxic affects on art. Resting felt wrong, even detrimental to my harder-better-faster-stronger practice I was cultivating. Unsurprisingly, I became reliant on social media. The likes and hashtags became cat nip for my insecure artist self. I let social media dictate how much to produce, when to produce, and what strategic messages to inject into my work to drive traffic to my tiny virtual corners on the internet. My practice was entirely governed by social media. My work no longer felt true to me and I started to lose the joy of creating. The dread of making art was so alarming that I couldn’t confront it initially. Art making became so precious to me that I relied on the rigid ways of thinking, making, and sharing my art. No rest, just make. No quiet, constant uploading. My body was screaming for rest yet my mind registered that as “that’s weakness talking, just push through the pain.” It felt like I was on a high speed train that wouldn’t stop unless it crashed into something. And, indeed, the metaphor became reality and I suffered a back injury from sitting too much at my desk. I was forced out of commission by my own body. This down time became open season for my demons to wreak havoc. Self critical judgments took residence in my art heart, art brain.

I used to wonder what other artists meant when they’d say things like, “every piece I make has a little piece of me in it.” I believe your process and work reflects back to you exactly where you are mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Your process has a way of showing you what your demons are, and if you’re not observant of how those demons affect you, it affects the quality of your work and the relationship to your creativity. When I look at the work I made during my hyper productivity period, I see obsession, perfectionism, and desperation. I initially blamed social media as the main villain who robbed me of creative joy. With hindsight, I know now that was a scared me trying to deny the real work that was ahead of me. I had to dive into my inner world and have tea with my shadows to seek answers. When the mind is allowed to run amok, all it does is generate noise. No spaciousness, only anxiety. What exactly about social media is harming my relationship to creating and my process? How do I unlearn these habits?

When the demons got too loud, it became clear to me that I needed an escape from my familiar environment. So I came to Mt. Caz to seek quiet and rest. If my mind couldn’t figure it out, why not let my tired body lead the way? The initial reintroduction to quiet and rest was comical and awkward at times during my stay at Mt Caz. I celebrated seemingly trivial joys of the mundane such as jumping on my bed for shits and giggles and taking a nap. These felt like huge victories because it meant that my body was acclimating to the healing medicine of rest. In between these moments of celebrating, however, I also experienced guilt around needing and engaging in rest. I felt like I didn’t deserve it, my imposter syndrome was at a level 10, and I had trouble sleeping the first couple of nights in Terra Incognita. I even started to force myself into making art when it wasn’t satisfying. I thought I was wasting my time not making art at an artist residency. Even with Christina and Albert’s blessings that I didn’t need to justify my residency by creating something, I felt insecure about doing nothing. Am I still an artist when I’m not making anything? Where do I get my motivation to make if social media isn’t a dominant part of my practice? I gave up on the grandiose ideas of making new work at Mt Caz and forced myself to rest and sit with whatever demon came up to chat with me. The more I resisted the rest, the more anxious my mind got, and the self critical voice got louder.

Maybe it was the actual lack of noise pollution in Corvallis. Maybe it was the forces of the winter cold that made me more present minded and aware of the natural space I was occupying. Maybe it was the consistency of Albert’s work schedule and morning routines that grounded me in an otherwise structureless time-space. Maybe it was the sounds of Christina’s shuffling house slippers that felt soothing. Maybe it was the nightly dinner conversations between the three of us that invigorated my mind in a different way. Maybe it was learning how to play an ukulele and feeling musically vulnerable with Christina and Albert. Maybe it was just being in an unfamiliar space. Maybe it was meeting other creatives and talking about their creative struggles. Maybe it was the aimless walks I took in the Mt Caz neighborhood. Maybe it was Christina and Albert’s permission to not make that finally sunk in.  Maybe it was playing to just play. It was the totality of the aforementioned that led me to just be. Doing anything and nothing, whenever, wherever, without judgement. The anxiety noise around not making subsided once I surrendered to rest. Eventually, my body started to guide my decision making, not my mind.

I dropped into my body and I could finally hear myself again. The message was loud and clear: when you surrender to rest, spaciousness manifests. And when the body experiences nourishing rest, the quality of your work and process gets revitalized. I jokingly called my AIR as rehab or a detoxing experience. It really did feel that way. The withdrawal, emotional and psychological angst, the frustration and impatience, the resistance to stillness and quiet, the self hating, and then the unexpected peace and clarity. I remembered what it was like to know what I want, separate from the illusory shoulds I create to justify aimless productivity.

The biggest takeaway from my Mt Caz AIR experience was that I returned to myself. I could hear myself without distractions. I cultivated a body conscious knowing. I read the introduction to Pema Chödrön’s “When Things Fall Apart” before coming to Mt Caz and wished so desperately that I too could surrender to rest. And I think I got a glimpse of what Pema was talking about:

“It was the most spiritually inspiring time of my life. Pretty much all I did was relax. I read and hiked and slept. I cooked and ate, meditated and wrote. I had no schedule, no agenda, and no ‘shoulds.’ A lot got digested during this completely open and uncharted time.”

Integration for Growth

Every small business owner, entrepreneur, and hobbyist shares the same desire for success in their respective venture, but in today’s complex commerce realm, being an expert at all of the fundamentals to create and operate a successful business is merely impossible. We are living in a new era of commerce. The World Economic Forum refers to this period as the 4th Industrial Revolution. The companies that will take root and grow will be well-managed and intentional when acquiring, creating, and leveraging knowledge.

First, knowledge is not data. Knowledge is the sum or range of familiarity and association perceived, discovered, learned, or experienced about data. In other words, how pieces of information link to another, the relationship among data points, essentially defines knowledge. It is no wonder that worldwide sales of contact relationship management software (or CRM) has grown geometrically over the past decade. Even less surprising is businesses’ movement away from discrete sales of a product or service to the broader offering of “experience” for a customer with one’s business.

Second, a team of stakeholders is needed to sustain all businesses. Today, enlightened owners see contractors and even strategic customers and suppliers as stakeholders, not just themselves and their employees; therefore, efficient and effective knowledge management requires integrated databases, i.e., programs used to capture, modify, and apply company data, tied to each other in a streamlined manner that empowers stakeholders.

Third, choosing an infrastructure or platform to build and integrate a company is the next important step. Management by email (and attachments) is hardly efficient, and texting is just too Pavlovian with all the other alerts one receives all day. Identifying a suite of critical programs and applications to run accounting, payroll, customer order processing, and digital marketing, having them available on any device to access all information, and including security that restricts access on a “need to know” basis are all necessary to avoid common cyber-related pitfalls.

Sounds easy? It’s not, and that‘s why I am a contributing author to Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner, Volume 4, to be released November 11, 2020.  My chapter alone is not sufficient to answer every question that will arise. Torontos Evelyn Chick Is Creating a New At-Home Bartending Experience for Socially Distanced Cocktail Enthusiasts

Evelyn Chick’s visionary ethos is centered on building (socially distanced) communities and inclusive spaces. She’s honed her skills in the two Cosmopolitan cities of Vancouver and Toronto, where she’s worked at a multitude of businesses — from event spaces such as Blue Water Cafe in Vancouver, to high-volume cocktail bars and fine dining restaurants like Toronto’s Bar Raval and Pretty Ugly, both of which placed Top 10 in Canada’s Best Bars for two years in a row.

With 13 years of experience in the hospitality industry so far, Chick has held numerous roles. Presently, these include beverage director for the Donnelly Group; Canadian coordinator of Speed Rack, an all-female charity competition focused on speed bartending; and, most recently, founder of Evelyn Chick Projects (EC Projects), which launched in May of this year.

Plenty of praise and accolades have accompanied her professional life. She is a WSET-certified sommelier, a certified specialist of spirits, and global champion 2015 of the Beefeater MIXLDN cocktail competition. (Her signature drink, crowned champion at the MIXLDN competition, was called “Endless English Summers,” an homage to a classic Gimlet offering an intoxicating melange of Beefeater London Dry Gin, fino sherry, a Green Park Cordial made of pomelo, fennel, caraway, and salted absinthe.)

Chick’s distinctive flair for crafting creative sips that span cannabis cocktails to zero-proof serves are central to EC Projects, a digital education platform bringing her wellspring of wisdom into people’s homes through livestream classes and virtual workshops. In building this digital hub, Chick says she is all about facilitating an accessible and fun environment where “cocktail-curious” novices can feel free to ask questions, to maximize their learning enjoyment without feeling judged or intimidated. Additionally, Chick recently signed on with Quell, a hospitality agency that represents a roster of talented BIPOC industry professionals. The company is helping her juggle numerous projects on the go, and aligns with her belief that sharing a passion for drinks, food, and bespoke experiences can be achieved through continued diversification of the community at large.

In advocating for equal representation and opportunities, Chick continues to champion for a more robust cultural climate of drinks inclusivity. Her ability to facilitate an ongoing dialogue of what it means to enjoy both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in this ever-shifting landscape only serves to further spark her inventiveness, and cement her place as a beverage leader. Below, Chick shares these thoughts and her affinity for pioneering dynamic drinks in the interview below.

1. What are you doing currently within the drinks industry?

At the moment, I am the regional beverage director for the Donnelly Group in Toronto. In the pandemic, I founded EC Projects, a creative hub for drinks enthusiasts. Additionally, I’m the bar & beverage curator for Restaurants Canada, a national association that serves the needs of the food service industry; and bartender-in-residence for a publication in the city called Toronto Life.

2. Can you share with me the genesis of you founding EC Projects?

The biggest question I get as a bartender is, “How did you come up with stuff like that?” — in terms of developing a cocktail — or, “I have this ingredient at home … how do I use it?” Evelyn Chick Projects is an approachable guide to bartending techniques and artisan recipes for the at-home drinks enthusiast. It started as a passion project for a way to connect with consumers and show them the creative side of the hospitality industry. It explores more than just “this is how you make a drink,” but digs into thoughtful ways in which home bartenders can use ingredients readily found in their pantry or fridge, easy uses they hadn’t considered before with them, and how they complement spirits. It evolved into a cool way for drinks enthusiasts to explore new techniques and recipes through virtual learning and experimentation, all from the comfort of their own home! Everyone had to pivot during the pandemic, so bringing elements of the bar to a digital form makes sense!

For instance, in one session, I used the entire banana (including the peel) to make a food-and-drink-paired recipe. It featured a Banana Chocolate Mug Cake and Caramelized Banana Peel Syrup which I used as a sweetener in an Espresso Martini that was fortified with Bacardi Ocho. 3. With such a diverse portfolio of experiences, what’s the coolest thing you’ve gotten to do in your role(s) so far?

As a Beverage Director for the Donnelly Group, I get to connect with guests on a personal level and share in their passion for learning about spirits, cocktails, etc. It’s all things that come natural to me. Due to the pandemic, I’ve also been able to share my expertise online and connect with a larger global network — which is pretty cool because I’ve missed engaging and interacting with people.

Additionally, in building a name for myself in the industry over the years, I’ve been able to reach audiences beyond the small/local cocktail community. In one instance, I got to curate beverage educational programs for large-scale conferences like the Restaurants Canada Show (Canada’s largest hospitality trade show), bringing a passion for drinks to folks who aren’t directly involved and/or wouldn’t think they would be interested in this side of the industry. I’ve created classes for people who are avid drink enthusiasts but don’t normally have access to the “how-tos” in the hospitality industry. Take, for example, my hosting a virtual cocktail hour for lawyers from a large firm based out of multiple countries across a few time zones, all enjoying the same drink.

4. How have you continued this community building with your businesses and respective roles in the pandemic, especially when it has uprooted and altered the lives of many people?

Evelyn Chick Projects is undoubtedly a product of the pandemic. Without our venues (at the Donnelly Group) open, I had to find a way to preserve that little bit of connection I had in the beverage industry. So for me, building this personal brand during an unprecedented crisis was a huge learning curve; it’s very different when you reach out to potential clients and represent yourself as “the brand” versus repping my position within a company that has buying power. While it was a challenge, I was incredibly excited about it because I had never pursued something of this nature before.

Prior to this, I worked to build up different companies my entire life. This is the first time I’ve created for myself. It’s almost like announcing to the world and saying, “Hey, this is my expertise, this is what I’ve worked on my whole life, and I’m putting it all out there.” I’ve discovered that you almost have to reinvent yourself, think outside the box, and showcase what you can offer as an individual to set yourself apart from the “other you” (e.g., the one repping company brands), if that makes sense. At first, I had doubts all the time about the likability of my content, whether or not I’m justifying what I’m presenting, and whether or not it’s been enough. But so far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive. It’s a continuing journey of navigating the social network(s), gaining exposure, and telling my personal brand’s story. While there’s a lot of talent, and to set yourself apart is not the easiest task, it’s been an incredibly rewarding venture so far.

5. Have there been additional challenges you or your businesses faced since Covid-19? How did you address it?

In wearing my beverage director hat (with the Donnelly Group), with the world filled with uncertainty, the toughest thing has been keeping my staff informed of the ever-changing situation. We try our best to stay connected with staff (e.g., via Zoom chats) and keep one another posted of any learning opportunities, foster ongoing positivity, and offer each other any prospects that could help them survive the lack of work available. For instance, any time we stumble upon government aid updates, resources from local nonprofits geared toward our hospitality industry, brands that have reached out to support us, or anything just beyond their reach, I’m there to help facilitate dialogue between these channels.

6. What’s a significant shift your business has made in the last six months that you had never considered before?

Altering the business model completely as a restaurant and bar for Pretty Ugly. We’ve had to learn to be flexible in terms of how service should run, and the magnitude of precautionary measures we have to take just to open the doors. There were a lot more considerations to put into practice, such as ensuring the whole space was socially distanced; training staff who are used to nightlife service to shift focus on what to pay attention to in this “new normal” (e.g., health and safety protocols); and exploring alternative options to recoup the loss of revenue from being in lockdown, like takeout, delivery, and cocktail kits. Despite all of these shifts, we remain optimistic: Any obstacle can be overcome, it just may take a bit more time to achieve it!

7. In light of your recent announcement of being repped by Quell (a hospitality agency that represents BIPOC industry professionals), I’m wondering: How are you using your position to push forward on racial equity in the industry?

Both personally and professionally, I’m blessed to have multiple platforms — events, virtual classes, social media — to voice my opinion in matters involving race, diversity, and inclusivity. I am constantly learning from my BIPOC peers, their personal and collective experiences, [and] trying to understand and empathize with situations that they may have come across. Moreover, I have zero tolerance for anyone who makes remarks that are intended to be sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, whether internally with staff or externally with patrons. These individuals are made to know that their school of thought is not welcome anywhere.

For my BIPOC peers, I’m not only appreciative of their candor, but use these as teachable moments for our own establishments. For instance, at the Donnelly Group, we have hired external help to set up a diversity council, whose protocols are currently under development, ensuring that our hiring and training practices are inclusive, respectful, and empowering. Everyone should feel safe and welcome to share in what I consider to be these essential community hubs together.

In the interim, I’ve hosted numerous virtual round-table panel discussions called “Initiating Change: Global Hospitality Through a BIPOC Lens,” which delves into many issues regarding the topic of race in hospitality. For example, identifying existing structures, as well as systematic and operational biases we need to change. 8. Looking forward, what opportunities do you see for your business to grow?

There’s lots of room in curating fun virtual experiences at the moment. Thinking beyond classic drink creation and traditional pairings, I’d want to bring something that promotes social gatherings, but in a responsible manner. My ideas include wine and food pairing workshops, showcasing the versatility of one ingredient and using it in numerous ways, cook-along sessions with booze, and a sober-curious rave that’s set to live DJ-spun tunes.

There’s also great demand for unique initiatives that have to do with health, wellness, and moderation. As an example, I’ll be guiding and informing such curious people on how to craft non-alcoholic beverages (that aren’t boring!). There’s a fantastic Spiced Carrot Ginger Mule I’ve made that features spiced chili cinnamon syrup, some fresh lime, and soda, with the buzz from the spice. Additionally, with the legalization of cannabis in Canada, there are ways to bridge the world of cannabis and (non-alcoholic) cocktails, educate consumers on these types of drinks; and opportunities to pair terpenes with global cuisines. These sips not only taste delicious, but facilitate much-needed conversations to help remove the stigma surrounding that industry. One drink I’ll highlight is my THC tonic that has notes of pine, earth, and wood from the terpene pinene I use. I take a thoughtful and methodical approach to creating this drink by first identifying the terpenes that the cannabis concentrate bring, then introducing flavors that complement those aromas. It’s very much like an art form, and similar to tasting a spirit or a wine and picking out flavor associations, all while being aware of dosage.

Overall, many businesses have had to shift their goals and perspectives, and the drinks industry is no exception — we’re all learning to cater to different demands. It’s a trying but very exciting time.

9. What’s your long-term vision for your brand?

The goal for Evelyn Chick Projects is to connect people from different industries, walks of life, race, religion — through the shared passion and enjoyment of everything food and drinks — together, but virtually. For the time being, it’s kind of hard to pinpoint exactly what this can look like as EC Projects is very much a fluid, approachable, global, and online brand. With that said, I would like to get to a point where one day, the only barrier between myself and connecting with other food and drink collaborators are dissimilar interests — and I would bridge this divide.

Since everything is going virtual through apps such as Zoom, Google Hangouts, House Party, etc., the possibilities are endless. A cool example I can think of is if a bar from London, England would have me host virtual sessions with their guests and collaborate on a cocktail kit they can follow along with. It’d be such an invigorating opportunity for both parties because we’d inject our respective cultures and thoughts into the process. But this would only be the beginning — it’s just one very small part of what this is about. Ultimately, it’s about creating and uniting a global network of drink enthusiasts beyond the “traditional” confines of a bar, curating incredible experiences that transcend time and space.

And we’re kind of turning the corner on the book of Jeremiah and we’ve spent most of this month reading from Jeremiah in the Old Testament. We will conclude the book of Jeremiah tomorrow. We are also reading Paul's letter to Titus, which we will also conclude tomorrow. But it's not tomorrow. It's today. So, from the Names of God Bible. Jeremiah chapter 51 verses 1 through 53.

Commentary:

Okay. Let's talk about the proverb for second and then we will tie it to something that Paul says in Titus. Okay. So, do you know someone in your life that, they seem to be in every single argument around you, like, they are in everything, like, they can be around people and maybe overhear somebody debating or having a conversation and then they insert themselves into the equation, uninvited, as if they can't help themselves? We all probably know people like that. Maybe we even are a person like that. The book of Proverbs counsels us that that is like sneaking up behind a dog and grabbing her by the ears. And I don't care whether it's a little dog or a big dog, that's never a good plan because you’re going to get growled at, snapped at, maybe even bitten. That's what you set yourself up for when you insert yourself into other people's business and it doesn't usually go well. And a lot of times we are that person, we might be thinking, well I’m just trying to help people, and I talk to people, and I’m just trying to help but what we’re not realizing is, we really like hearing ourselves speak, and we like to instruct people, whether they want it or not. We feel like we have a valuable opinion and it needs to be heard whether anyone wants to hear it or not. And then, pretty soon, nobody wants to hear it. And then we wonder why we don't have any friends. And it's because we keep grabbing a dog by its years by inserting ourselves when we’re not invited. Now, conversely, we probably also could bring to mind a person in our life that we think is full of wisdom and wise and it's rare to find that kind of a person inserting themselves into every equation. Those are the people that we seek out. We actually want their opinion. We actually want to know what they have to say and what they might be able to share because they live a life that we look up to and they carry wisdom that we seek and we witness their relationship with God and we witness their self-control, like, we witness the evidence of that relationship and we seek it out. Paul refers to that kind of person in his letter to Titus. So, he’s going down a list of different life circumstances and behaviors that would be appropriate and proper in those circumstances. And then he says, after all, God's saving kindness has appeared for the benefit of all people. It trains us to avoid ungodly lives filled with worldly desires so that we can live self-controlled, moral, and godly lives in this present world. So, like, so that we can live this way right now, so that we can live self-controlled moral and godly lives right now, while at the same time hoping for what we are expecting - the appearance of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. So, Paul basically gives us an example or a view of the opposite of what the proverb is talking about and tells us that it's available right now in this present world. Which brings us to the ultimate question of: why do we do the things that we do? If we don't have any really deep relationships because we insert ourselves into everything and grab the dog by the ears all of the time. Then we can ask ourselves, what's underneath that? Because that behavior is just an outpouring of something below and were exposing our own insecurities. And yet, according to the letter to Titus, God's saving kindness invades that space and trains us to avoid things that are ungodly, in every way, and trains us to live self-controlled, including our tongues - self-controlled, moral and godly lives in this present world, in the right now.

Prayer 

Father, that is what we want. All of the story that is let has led us to this place and all of the behaviors that go along with it, that are at times destructive or unhelpful, at minimum, we surrender that to You because it's unlikely they were not aware, that were just completely unaware. And, so, we surrender those insecurities and those wounds and the assumptions that we continually formulate, the things that we invent in our heads all of the time. All of that stuff that motivates us in ways that are not self-controlled, moral, and godly in this present world, all of that we surrender to You and invite your Holy Spirit to come, restore, repair, heel, and make new again - those places that are trigger points for us in our behaviors. Come, Holy Spirit. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

I began to read the first sentence. Two seconds later, I heard the voice of the Holy Spirit.

She is the victim of a well-orchestrated satanic exchange of virtues – in the realm of the spirit.

Very stubborn kind of problem to solve.

    Trend #1: A Functional Website (Content Is Everything)

Your online storefront is your landing page. Although there's no manual for creating a high-converting copy and building a foolproof design, there is no denying that to establish your online presence, you need to have a business website. People don't usually go for the best products and services in the market (especially the ones who are new to your site), they opt for the one whose information they can digest quickly and easily. 

Actionable Tip: Donald Miller, founder of StoryBrand, has an easy and powerful way of evaluating your website. As a rule, upon visiting your website, one should understand what you offer within five seconds. Does your website pass the "Grunt Test" (Assuming a caveman were to open a laptop, look at your site for 5 seconds, and close the laptop, will it be able to grunt what is your website about?) With just a quick glance at your homepage, can your visitor answer these three questions:

What is it that you offer?

How will it make my life better?

What do I need to do to buy your product/hire of your services?

Give your website a quick make-over by:

Making your headline direct (easy-to-understand tagline)

Displaying the convenience your client will experience if they hire your services

Including an obvious call-to-action button ("Contact Us", "Call Now" in bright, visible colors)

Trend #2: Optimize For Local User Intent

Have you ever reached for your phone, opened your browser, and typed "Where can I find Mexican food near me?" when looking for a place to eat? You have a specific "intent" in mind (food) and would like to eat nearby because, well, you're starving. The page result will bring you a list of restaurant names and maps with their service hours. Google's dominance in search traffic revolutionized the way we look for answers online and we as users, has become more conversational with our queries (whether we are typing it or doing a voice search). Thus, it is crucial for your company to appear on Local SERPs (Search Engine Result Page) to remain search relevancy and build authority while generating better leads for your business.

Actionable Tip: If you haven't done so, claim your Google My Business listing and create a Google My Business profile. Fill out your business page properly and be sure to include all the important details: address, contact number, business hours, and a unique, formatted description of your company with links to your online site. Also, you can maximize your Google presence by creating a free website with an updated profile image (logo), post your services with high-resolution photos for visually appealing content.

Trend #3: Social Media Community

If Google is for "intent", the use of social media is for "interest". According to Hootsuite, 66% of monthly Facebook users use it daily, with Americans spending 58 minutes per day on Facebook. Likewise, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and YouTube have amassed millions of users who are sharing micro-content every second in any given day. Since social networking sites have an easy-to-use interface with downloadable mobile apps, it is convenient and handy, and offers more personalized interaction between you and your patrons. The rise of social networking sites paved the way for small businesses and solopreneurs to advertise their brand without spending a fortune and establish their influence by being part of an online community.

Actionable Tip: Develop a Social Media Marketing strategy. Easier said than done, I know, but every step counts. Start by posting meaningful and engaging content. "Before and after" photos works wonders to curious browsers, but what else can you post? Ongoing promotions, what's your day like at work, your current project, seasonal reminders (for example, you're a plumber: winterize your outdoor kitchen), tips and tricks (how to better take care of your carpet), etc. Monitor where and when you are getting the most feedback from your followers so you can interact with them. The key here is delivering the right message, to the right person, at the right time - every time. 

Trend #4: Videos

One of the most credible ways of connecting with your audience and building trust in your company is the use of videos. Live-stream content is flourishing and has become a powerful tool for online marketers to convey their message. It's no wonder why mobile devices and apps support and feature video tools in their products. According to HubSpot, more than 50% of consumers want to see videos from brands more than any other type of content. 

Actionable Tip: A quick search on Google will give you thousands of results about video marketing and video creation process. You can hire services when you want it professionally done or do it yourself without the complexities of technology by being raw and going "live" on a social media platform. Bear in mind, as with any project, focus on one thing at a time. List down your target audience, the purpose of your video, and the time and resources needed to produce it.

Trend #5: Client/Customer Centricity

As a service-based industry, this concept is integral to your construction company. What does it mean to be client-centric? It is more than just offering an exceptional customer service, it means nurturing relationships with your clients by being part of their "buyer's journey".  Clients in turn, will not only provide you positive feedback but becomes a loyal follower and advocate of your brand. Randal talked about Customers Vs Clients, and how taking care of your clients is essential not just for acquisition but also for sustainability. After all, it is easier to maintain a client than to gain a new one.

Actionable Tip: Empathize with your client when addressing their needs. Make their experience easy, from reaching out to you (remember the "call-to-action" button on your website?) to handing payments. 

In conclusion: Let's keep in mind that trends fade away. Invest in yourself and expand your skills. Develop a growth-mind set because there's still no one-size-fits-all marketing solution for every type of business nor will there ever be.
