I was wondering if you've seen the film Housekeeping for Beginners? It's one of the only films I've seen that touches on both roma and lgbt issues. I think some of the Balkan ethnic politics went over my head tbh. Anyway, I was wondering if you had any thoughts about it

Not only have I not seen it, I had also never heard of it! ... Which doesn't really surprise me. The Romani media and activists I follow usually don't talk about stuff that deals with LGBT issues...

I looked it up and I couldn't find any cinema that is projecting it either, which is a shame, but not the first time a Romani LGBT movie is not screened in my country (the movie 'Roma Boys' set a precedent).

I would absolutely love to watch it, though!! If I manage to find it, I'll definitely report back to you with my thoughts on it haha. It's so, so great that they are making films that feature LGB Roma!

Film: HOUSEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS (dir. Goran Stolevski, Poland-Serbia-Australia-Croatia-Kosovo-North Macedonia-USA)

Observations: Two other folks in the house besides us. If anyone doubts that the influence of Stanley Kramer is now a guiding light in world cinema, here's yet another example. It's a celebration of a blended, LGBTQ+ household holding itself together with falsified papers and a pasteboard marriage against the outside forces of reaction and oppression. The story is complicated by interpersonal conflicts, which nearly drive the characters apart, but the "happy" (if uneasy) conclusion is just around the bend. If that sounds like I didn't enjoy it, well, no, I really found the experience of rooting (sometimes cringing) for these people enjoyable and satisfying. Then again, maybe I like Stanley Kramer as a flmmaker more than the smart folks, too.
