omg what do you mean by The Misfortunes
My email got hacked and it was a hotmail account so like the way hotmail was set up or at least mine was was that even when I went to reset it I couldn’t like get back i to it because I had to confirm it from WITHIN THE LOCKED EMAIL???? It was so fucking stupid but there was literally nothing I could do.
And tumblr had just done its whole “oops you need to reset your password from the email we sent the account linked to this one” So for MONTHS I was corresponding with tumblr trying to figure out how to get back into my shit without access to the email. Like I literally even talked to a specific guy and said “listen man. Lets homebrew this. Here is the link to my account’s tag with all the pics of my face I ever posted and anything mentioning my name. And now I am going to take a picture of my driver’s license and then one of my driver’s license next to my face. I made posts about where I worked too. Here’s a picture of me with my license in my work uniform. You ask for another specific and I will give it, I’ll take a picture with a handwritten note in the same room of my house that the other pics of me were taken, just give me my shit back PLEASE” and they told me they couldn’t.
I get that these guys had their hands tied like I don’t blame them, they were trying to abide by policy to keep their jobs but like. I had friends from that account, two in particular who remade all the time, and I can’t ever find them again. One of them I met at a Homestuck thing and we’d been friends for like 6 years by that point and now they’re just gone. Fuckin bullshit. I had some friends on there who I was maybe in a rough place with too and was gonna try and patch stuff up with but nope. Goodbye forever. And this was when I was still a teenager so like I didn’t have contact with online friends bc I didn’t want my mom to know so its not like I had anyone’s number or anything. Thus, the Misfortunes.

Once upon a time, I lost access to a Hotmail account. Their support was useless - they wouldn't help me if I couldn't give them my password, and it was the password that was the problem. I couldn't reset it, they wouldn't reset it, it was a mess.
This wasn't a huge deal, except it was the only point of contact I had with an overseas penpal I made in 1997. Since the email for him was stored in the Hotmail system I couldn't recall what it was, and of course anything he sent me I couldn't access.
It wasn't until roughly 2014 that I did some googling based off his name and rough location, and found a *possible* email address. I reached out, and crossed my fingers. Luckily for me, I found him, and we've been in contact again since.
Yall don't always realize who you'll lose touch with until it's too late.
So a real thing with the dissolution of social networks is the loss of small connections. Funny takes and long threads can be archived, but how do you preserve your bond with a mutual? How do you find each other again? With every platform move we lose small connections with people we appreciated. That’s a sad, involuntary little break-up. Sorry to all the little ghosts I’ve lost over the years. Sorry to all the new ones coming.

so annoying my old hotmail account has been constantly bombarded with bullshit "authentication" things that obviously hasn't been me... for probably the last entire year.. and finally it locked me out of my account because "too many authentication attempts... so reset the password... and have run virus/malware before I even reset it... like.....just let me have my stupid personal email that I've had since like age 14...

pro tip: if your hotmail account simply will not receive password reset emails from a site, check if that site has been mysteriously added to the domain blocklist in hotmail settings.
the fact that this can be the case leads me to assume that somewhere in the hotmail UI, where you would expect there to be a "delete all emails like this" button or a "mark as spam and spam-flag all emails like this" button, there is instead a "I never want to see emails from this domain ever, not in the junk folder, not at all, just delete from from fucking existence" button
this seems like a Bad Decision

aka.ms/authapp Microsoft Authenticator App Setup (2024)
Microsoft is mostly known for its various productivity apps and the operating system, Windows. They also have an extensive range of apps for cybersecurity, one of which is the Microsoft Authenticator app. It helps you securely sign in to your online accounts via two-factor authentication.
Once your accounts have been added, they are automatically backed up in an encrypted cloud by Microsoft. In this guide, we’ll show you how to download the Microsoft Authenticator app via aka.ms/authapp, how to use the app, and setting it up on your phone.
How to Use the Microsoft Authenticator App
The Microsoft Authenticator app has various features that can help you use your accounts more securely, therefore avoiding threats like compromised and stolen passwords. It also acts as a backup in case you forgot your password, especially for accounts that you didn’t use for a long time.
Your Microsoft account can be used to access Windows, Xbox Live, Hotmail, Azure as well as many businesses. So it is important to keep your account secure.
These are four main ways how you can use the Microsoft Authenticator app:
Two-factor Authentication – In this method, one of the factors is your account’s password. Once you sign in with your username and password, you will need to further approve the sign-in via notification or a unique verification code.
Code Generation – You can use this app as a code generator when signing in to an app that supports code generation.
Phone Sign-in – Another version of two-factor authentication where you can sign in without a password. It uses your phone’s verification methods like fingerprint, PIN, and face recognition.
One-Time Passwords (OTP) – Aside from two-factor verification, the Microsoft Authenticator app also supports time-based, one-time passwords (TOTP) standards.
If you’re a part of a work or school organization, you might be required to use the Microsoft Authenticator app to gain access to your organization’s documents and other confidential data. A complete setup of this app is required to use as a trusted verification method. To know more, go to this link.
How to Download and Install the Microsoft Authenticator App
The Microsoft Authenticator app works on either Android or Apple, as long as your phone has a working mobile number—which will be verified later via SMS (Short Message Service) or via phone call.
To download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone, follow these steps:
On your Smartphone (Direct Link to Google Play or App Store):
Go to aka.ms/authapp to visit the app’s download page.
Depending on your phone’s OS, click the corresponding download button (Get the app button).
Note: Both the links and the QR codes will lead to either the Google Play Store (left option) or App Store (right option) Microsoft Authenticator app download page.
Once you’re redirected, select the Install button (Google Play) or Get App button (App Store).
To set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone, follow these steps:
After it’s installed, set up your account by opening your computer’s browser and going to the account security dashboard of your Microsoft account. You can log in to it by clicking here.
Choose the Add a new way to sign in or verify option and click Use an app.
Click Next. A QR code will be displayed on your computer screen.
Then, in the Authenticator app, select More options (three dots icon) and click + Add account.
Select the account type and choose Scan a QR Code.
Scan the QR code on your computer screen and click Finish. You have now completely set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone.
To further set up the Microsoft Authenticator app for two-step verification, you can either choose between SMS messaging or phone call:
Two-step verification via SMS – your mobile number will receive a code that you will use for two-step verification or password reset.
Two-step verification via phone call – your mobile number will receive a phone call from the app for a two-step verification or password reset.

Shoutout to Firefox for the epic save.
So, I had to reset my laptop because it got stuck on the log-in screen, it just wouldn’t load, but during the reset, it did an update which for some reason, logged me out of all my accounts.
Problem is, I didn’t know my Google password to just resync everything, and I didn’t know the password to my Hotmail/Outlook e-mail to reset the Google password, even having codes sent to my phones never showed up.
It’s only because I had Firefox installed at some point last year (as I thought a technical issue I was having with Tumblr was with Chrome) that I was able to recover and change those passwords since upon installation, as a way to move everything from Chrome, you can have it copy and save passwords for everything you had saved
So thanks to that, I was able to get into my Hotmail/Outlook to reset my Google password, saving the new ones in the process so I don’t have to go through this shit again if it happened.
