Humaniti Vertical City in Montréal
27 Sep 2021
Design: Lemay
Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Photos by Brandon Barré
Humaniti: Montreal’s first vertical city
Located at the crossroads of the International district, the Quartier des spectacles, and Old Montreal, Humaniti is Montreal’s tallest mixed-use community. It includes a luxury hotel, rental units, restaurants, boutiques, and public spaces. Its unique H-shaped design promotes a dialogue and openness across its 39 floors and differing vocations. The multifunctional plaza is an extension of the magnificent Place Jean-Paul Riopelle, named after the internationally renowned Quebec painter and sculptor, that faces the project.
The objective was to create a tower that would have a presence in the Montreal city skyline, while also creating a sense of community in a hyper-dense area. Canadian design firm, Lemay, was brought in as lead architect, while sister brand, Lemay + Escobar, crafted the interiors of the hotel.
Its design strikes a balance between bold and sleek. It absorbs and contributes to the energy of its surroundings by reflecting the richness and diversity of its location, while simultaneously creating an identity of its own. Open and generous, it creates a unique environment where multi-sensory human experiences abound. Humaniti responds to the different scales and limitations of the urban context, while reshaping the public realm of the project in both the streetscape and its vertical space.
The Blades From the center of Place Jean-Paul Riopelle, one can see two narrow blades that split. The tallest blade has a truncated shape, paying homage to Manhattan’s Flatiron building. The second blade appears as though it splits off and falls from the monolith. The breathtaking effect amplifies the experience from the neighboring square, echoing the mist in the central fountain back towards the vertical community.
The Hives The hives are a distinctive architectural gesture of the project, reinforcing the vertical city concept. While not visible from the street in their entirety, these prefabricated balconies break the scale of the project to create a domestic discourse. Each hive accommodates approximately four households, similar to the typology found in many Montreal neighborhoods. Their staggered arrangement favors the penetration of natural light within residential units, while attracting the eye through their rhythm and simplicity. The hives’ human scale and well-defined groupings of condos evokes a smaller community feel, while accommodating hundreds of dwellings.
“Humaniti has shifted the playing field for mixed use projects in Montreal and Canada, testament to the courage of the development team, and challenges the status quo in numerous ways. It has emerged as an example of how thoughtful and nuanced design excellence strategies can play a part in the success of large and complex developments. Humaniti is key to the resurgence of the city, and a symbol of Montreal’s future as a design capital of the world.”– Andrew King, Chief Design Officer, Lemay
The Hotel The 4.5-star Marriott Autograph Collection hotel is spread over 11 floors, and is suspended on a cantilever-shaped structure, marrying Humaniti’s residential and commercial complexes and completing the community’s unique “H” shape.
“The project is located in the Quartier International, a few steps from the Palais des Congrès, the city’s iconic convention center, and on the threshold of the historic city centre. It is an iconic, youthful, and vibrant scene, and we therefore wanted the focus to be on fun and joy, and to be very contemporary. We drafted the space with clean lines, and we curated it with eclectic art and furniture.” – Andres Escobar, Design Principal, Lemay + Escobar
Inside the hotel, two concurrent design themes are at work: the bold, geometric accents inspired by the sharp architecture of Humaniti, and the softer, tranquil emphasis on the concept of “humanity”.
Nowhere is that better exemplified than in the lobby of the Humaniti Montreal Hotel, as the chandelier, twisted in the sinuous shape of a DNA strand, beautifully complements the high ceilings, geometric floors, and striking ceiling pattern, along with a gold linear partition. The sculptural art pieces displayed throughout the lobby convey a similar contrast between geometry and humanity.
The same holistic approach characterizes the guestrooms, with a color palette consisting primarily of rich yellows and deep teals. This fosters a rich balance between the happiness and spontaneity of yellow, and the tranquility and peaceful optimism of teal. The geometric patterns found in the guest rooms, seen both in the carpet and bathroom tile, underscore the overall architecture of Humaniti. These elements provide a vibrant contrast to softer design elements such as the artwork, inspired by mother nature, and the human-like pair of sculptures.
Connecting urban dwellers to nature The vertical community allows residents and visitors alike to enjoy big city living, while connecting with nature, favoring well-being, and striking a dialogue between its residents and the spaces they inhabit. Designed to embrace the surrounding green spaces, Humaniti reconnects urban dwellers with their natural environment. Its design proposes a lifestyle that reduces the need for artificial light in lieu of natural sunlight and views, in an effort to create a sense of serenity in an otherwise dynamic and connected context. The project’s color scheme was thoughtfully selected based on those that can be found in natural spaces, further solidifying the project’s connection to nature.

Ein weiteres Mal Besuch aus Deutschland! :D
Hello Headbangers and other Friends!
Also… dicke Empfehlung!
Erster Halt: Mont Royal :D
Fotoshooting time!
Bis zum nächsten Mal!
Stay Trve \m/

Tuesday 8 July 1834
4 ¼
10 10
No kiss. Very fine morning F58 ½° at 5 ½ - breakfast at 6. Off from Motets (pronounced Mot-tes) at 6 20 – steep ascent the track often high over the torrent or some precipices - A- frightened, nervous and sickish – an avalanche on the glacier de Motets (as on the mer de glace) as we passed - At the top of the Col de la Seigne at 7 53, Mt Blanc (left) hid – the great object for passing the Col de la Seigne is that from it is the best view of Mt. Blanc - we were unlucky - the view, however, was still very fine - Mt Velan [Vélan] (said Michel) it is the largest mountain - with long back and in front of us (no! Michel must be wrong – Mt Velan [Vélan] is to the east just above the great St Bernard – it must have been Mt Cramont [Crammont] I meant?– our guides were not very au fait at the mountains hereabouts) just below us (rather to the left) the Allée Blanche and the lac de Combal at the farther end of which beings Val Veni [Val Veni] - on our ascent, and at the top, daises, Michaelmas ditto, chamomile, forget-me-nots, gentianella etc the nearest mont wooded, and pointed seeming to close the valley straight before is (conical) is the Mt. Valesan [Valaisan] – impossible – Michel must be wrong again. Mt Valesan [Valaisan] is to the south of little St Bernard – was this last named mountain rather than the long-backed one Mt Cramont [Crammont]? - wrote 5 minutes and began the descent (over snow) into the Allée blanche at 8 - rode over the 1st snow in 2 minutes - then walked over 2 others and hard and slippery - At the chalet of l’allée Blanche at 9 – the berger had only been arrived about a week – stopt an hour for A- to eat cold fowl and veal and take the reminder of her bottle of Contamine [Les Contamines-Montjoie] vin d’Asti - she was nervous, and not well this morning – must eat and drink well and be cheered up and then, as I tell her, she will do wonders - making gruyère and Sarrat (as pronounced) the latter all of cows milk (did the berger mean
JP and FJ Pictet Genève, Abraham Chesbuliez the Paris Th. Ballimore, rue de Seine St. Germain 1829. 214/324 12mo)
I had a little warm whey and tasted the butter fresh from the churn – merely a chalet – would be difficult for A- to sleep here. Off again at 10 – in ¼ hour look down upon the lake – at it at 10 35, coast it in 10 minutes and enter the Val Veni [Val Veny] at 10 50 immediately on passing the bridge over an artificial stone-work mound to confine the lake - Before arriving at the chalet, a glacier (left) supported high on its mass of moraine - another glacier like it, but larger, below the lake, looking like a lower range of mountain - these glaciers bring down enormous pieces of rock, and form a sort of chaos - would not pass here in bad weather - one might easily be écrasé by the falling stones and rocks - the sides whitish - thinly strewed here and there with larch on the sides of the glacier - the mountains très sauvages and escarpées - rested 10 minutes at 11 5 - A- had not sleep enough last night – nervous and wanting dinner and to go to bed – opposite where we sat down to rest, the high rock, on the other side the stream (the Doire or Doria) very white – David said his uncle ‘Jacques Balmat dit de Mt Blanc’ had told it was from this white rock the valley was called Allée Blanche - N.B. this white rock is not in l’Allée Blanche but in the Val Veni [Val Veny] - A- walked an hour longer (too nervous and frightened to ride along the narrow track amid these rocks and precipices) till we nearly reached the bottom of the valley – very hot riding along the bottom and the flies very troublesome to our mules – the Doria passes under the glacier de Brenva (turns right) and falls into the Doria of the valley de Ferret just below the little town of Entrèves in the vallée de Entrèves, and passes Courmayeur, Aoste etc etc we had a considerable montée towards the glacier - it was by this that Mrs and Miss Campbell descended from the col de Géant – we were opposite their zigzag track at one. Alighted to look at the glacier – our being so near and looking from some height made the sight instructive as to the nature of glaciers in general - then walked down to the bridge - remounted our mules – passed the baths, 2 nice, white new-looking houses at a little distance (left) and alighted à l’Ange the great hotel at Courmayeur at 2 8 – very fine all our way – 10 minutes shower ¼ hour after our arrival – dinner at 5 ¼ in an hour. Miss W- had previously lain down and had a fresh bottle of vin d’Asti. Then walked to the village of Dolen, as pronounced Dolina on the map – beautifully situated singular village consisting principally of one very odd narrow overhanging shabby street - the wood houses with projecting stories and roofs meeting within about 2ft. at the top - the street (channel in the middle) about nine ft. wide - very antique looking - tolerably good church - Courmayeur very beautifully situated in deep basin with 2 valleys opening into it at each end - viz. - Val Veni [Val Veny] and de Ferret and the valley de la Thuile leading to the little St. Bernard and the bend of the valley towards Aosta - and 2 recess one on each side that of Dolina, rich green and beautiful and that of the village of Saxe, thro’ which you go to Les Trons des Romains, ancient [mines], ‘pour en extraire une galène à petits grains, tenant argent, dans une gauge de spath calcaire’ Vid. Nouvel Itinéraire des vallées autour du Mont. Blanc 229/324 while out this evening went to the other Inn l’Union - large good looking building - seems a good Inn, but much smaller and inferior to where we are - would take us in at the pension price of those who to say and bathe and drink the waters ie. 6/ a day for ourselves and 4fr. a day for George - our landlord at the Angel could not do this if we only staid one or 2 nights - tho’ his prices are the same for the bathes - he can make up 160 beds - has 3 or 4 houses taken in the little town - the hotel itself is large and good building round a largish quadrangular court and built entirely for the accommodation of those who come on account of the waters. Very fine day - F64° now at 9 20 pm - A- in bed at 8 ¾.

Lac du Mt Cenis and Susa
So, I got to the top, and hit up the first chalet / café I saw. Best glass of cider and crisps ever! Yet the weather only deteriorated...
I donned my winter gear, leather jacket galoshes and rain jacket, for the first time in months. The only pictures from this I filmed from my Go-pro, so they'll be out when I figure out a program to edit these. But the weather was bad. Not to say awful, but I wanted down from there fast!
In summer, with good weather, it would have been lovely: the lake cradled by the peaks is dramatic, and there are lots of wee forts, cafés and marmots to see. But I dropped the hammer and pushed out of France at a pace.
The descent into Italy was precipitous, and quite treacherous in the wet. It was not obvious where the frontier lay, but when I started passing small derelict huts with Italian names I knew I was in a new country, the info boards in the villages full of speculation about Hannibal's crossing. The scenery too was superb despite the rain, it was all I could do to keep my eyes on the road!
I eventually pulled into Susa, and tired beyond belief, I opted for almost the first hotel I came by. There were no local campsites.
The hotel was less than welcoming, it was a little like an Italian Fawlty Towers, with the padrone first declaring the rate and then asking for my passport, before suggesting that I may want to wash before I eat! He seemed unimpressed by my lack of Italian and the fact I had cycled from France that day. Mind, it was the day after the Giro d'Italia had passed that way and the city was still bedecked in pink ribbons accordingly. I was too tired to argue, and unloaded my bike into my room, washed, and went down for dinner, which was excellent by British standards, but not what I had come to expect on the continent. Still, That's the Alps DONE!

Things to do During Winters and Summers in Morgins
When it comes to winter and snow what better place can anyone think of but Switzerland. Every year thousands of people visit the various parts of the country to enjoy winter activities. However, there are some amazing places in the Alps that are also a great place to be spending your holiday in summers.Morgins is one of the most popular tourist spots in the Alps that is ideal for both winter and summer holidays. It is a small village that is known for ski Portes du Soleil.
Winters in Portes du Soleil
Ski Morgins is one of the best destinations for tourists due to many reasons.Portes du Soleil has many resorts and has cross-country tracks that are around 214 km. With around 195 lifts and cable-cars, the tourists can reach an average height of around 1000-2400 meters. This is a perfect height to reach the slope for skiing. A ski enthusiast can easily cover a 20km track in the area. Lac de Morgins is the most popular track which is located at a high altitude. Not only adults but children too can enjoy playing with the snow as the area has a dedicated playground for young kids.
For those who are yet to learn skiing, horse driven sledges are the perfect activity for them. Snow go-karting, ice track, and snow-shoe walking are also some of the activities that one can enjoy in the area. Children and adults can also enjoy ponies and horses and even learn to ride them. If you thought that Morgins is only fun during winters, then think again because the summer in this place is worth spending time with your family and friends.
Summer in Morgins
Morginsholiday is equally fun, adventurous, and exciting as the winters. Summer opens a wide range of footpaths for hikers and adventurers. There are many themed paths to walk on such as Woodland, Planets, Bee Discovery Paths, to name a few. You will also get an amazing view if you walk from Val de Morgins to Val d’Illiez. There is also a wide range of plants that are rare in the country. You can also hike in the mountains near the Morgins and enjoy the view while reaching an altitude. The village also has sports such as golf, tennis, riding, etc. for sports enthusiasts. Rock climbing, paragliding, and mountain biking are other sports that one should try in Morgins during summer.
Morgins Accommodation
Since Morgins is one of the popular destinations in Switzerland, it has many hotels and resorts. Most of these accommodations are spacious and have modern and cosy interiors. They also have easy access to lifts and buses that lead to the skiing areas. From reasonably priced accommodations to luxury Morgins Chalet, the place has it all.
Even though Morgins sees lots of tourists during winter, the summer season is slowly gearing up and becoming popular among the tourists. It is a place that one should not miss out while visiting the Alps for a holiday.

Where To Stay In Tadoussac, Canada – Best Tadoussac Hotels | Miss Tourist
Are you going to Tadoussac soon? That’s great! In this article, you can find a list of suggestions for the best Tadoussac hotels which will help you book your rooms easy and fast!
Tadoussac is a small town in Canada renowned for the fact that you can go whale watching there and admire the gentle giants in their natural habitat! The marine life is so diverse and beautiful there, you simply cannot miss this destination during your Canada itinerary!
If you want to find out more about Tadoussac and the tours you can take there, (including boat tours and kayak tours), you can read my article about my 2 weeks Canada road trip itinerary here.
Below I have handpicked the best hotels in Tadoussac with perfect reviews, good location, and fabulous amenities! You can find here hotels sorted by all types of budgets and even some apartments and holiday rentals that are a bit outside the city but perfect in case you are traveling in Canada with a rented car.
Best Hotels in Tadoussac, Canada
Even though Tadoussac is a small town, there are various good hotels for all budgets there. The only problem is that the rooms are usually sold out fast, given the fact this is a popular destination for whale watching. The solution? Make sure to book your hotel as soon as possible!
Here are my recommendations for luxury, middle-priced and budget accommodations in Tadoussac, Quebec, all of them with great reviews:
Luxury (220 CAD and up)
Hotel Tadoussac – is a fabulous 4-star Tadoussac hotel that offers amazing views over Tadoussac Bay and Saguenay Fjord! Plus, they even have on-site spa services and 2 restaurants that serve delicious dishes. Feeling tired over a day of adventures? No problem, you can get a massage at the hotel or relax in the outdoor season pool!
Maison Hovington – Another 4-star cozy accommodation, Maison Hovington is a cool Tadoussac bed and breakfast that awaits you with a nice garden, cozy and spacious rooms, and a daily buffet breakfast served on-site! Needless to say, you will benefit from free Wi-Fi and the staff can help you arrange whale watching tours in case you need it.
Auberge Tadoussac La Merveilleuse – If you are searching for a cute and cozy inn to spend your night in Tadoussac, this is your perfect option! This inn is located right on the seafront and it awaits you with a garden, a terrace, and you can even do dog-sledding, snow-shoeing, and skiing during winter!
Middle-priced (from 150 to 220 CAD)
Auberge Maison Gagne – This rustic-style 3-star inn is located right near Lac de l’Anse a l’Eau in Tadoussac, very close to Saguenay Fjord. This is one of the best places to stay in Tadoussac and you will be awaited with a delicious breakfast each morning, you can do hiking during the day or just relax in the rest area in the evening and just enjoy your stay. Plus, the staff is extremely friendly!
La Galouine auberge et Restaurant – This is another cool inn with rustic and comfy rooms, free Wi-Fi, an unmissable restaurant that serves fresh seafood and wild fruit desserts and many other facilities! Except for whale watching, you can even do kayaking or explore a black bear safari during your stay!
Motel le Beluga – This is a great middle-priced hotel in Tadoussac, Canada for people who want to be close to the whale watching tours and, depending on how much in advance you book your stay, you can even find some budget options here! This place offers free Wi-Fi, a cozy common area with a hammock and great service!
Budget (from 75 to 150 CAD)
Finding a high-quality budget hotel in Tadoussac is not that easy, but not impossible either! In case you can’t find any available hotels from the list below, another good alternative would be to book your hotel in Baie-Saine-Catherine, located very close to Tadoussac (less than 10km away). Below you can find recommendations for both Tadoussac and Baie-Sainte-Catherine for your convenience:
Le Petit Hotel La Passe Pierre Par La Galouine – If you are searching for cheap hotels in Tadoussac, this one is an amazing option! Some of the great advantages of staying here include free Wi-Fi, a good location close to Tadoussac Chapel, an on-site restaurant that serves delicious dishes and even a cocktail bar!
Hôtel Le Beluga is another good option located very close to Tadoussac Bay. Beluga Hotel in Tadoussac has a great location for everyone that wants to do whale watching and it also provides free Wi-Fi, a cozy seating area and an on-site restaurant (open June-October).
Gite la Maison Rochefort – This accommodation is located in Baie-Saine-Catherine, only 8 km from Tadoussac, so it could be the perfect option if you are traveling Canada with a rented car. The B&B is extremely close to the ferry dock where the whale watching tours start and it awaits you with clean and cozy rooms, homemade breakfast and more!
Gîte de la Colline – This is another excellent B&B in Baie-Saine-Catherine located only 6km from Tadoussac that offers gorgeous views over the sea, a nice and relaxing sun terrace, shared bathrooms, free Wi-Fi and even free private parking!
Apartments near Tadoussac
Although there aren’t any apartment options right in the city of Tadoussac, you can find a few great ones in Grandes-Bergeronnes, around 20km from the city. Staying in an apartment is a good option in case you prefer more space and intimacy or if you are traveling in a larger group. I have made the research for you and here are some options:
Les Appartements de La Bergeronnette – This cozy and modern apartment building is around 20km away from Tadoussac and it is great for 2, 4, 6 or 8 people traveling to the area, as they have different types of apartments for all tastes! Each apartment is spacious and you will have a fully equipped kitchen, free Wi-Fi and a nice balcony, seating area and different kinds of beds that you can choose from.
Appartement Chez Léon – Just like the previous option, this apartment is located around 20km from Tadoussac and it is fit for up to 5 people – you will get 2 full beds and 1 twin bed. The entire apartment is sparkling clean and beautifully decorated and it awaits you with a tennis court, BBQ facilities, a nice garden, a fully equipped kitchen and more!
Holiday homes near Tadoussac
Just like for the apartments, you can find some affordable and convenient holiday homes and chalets in Grandes-Bergeronnes, no more than 22 km from Tadoussac. Here are my handpicked recommendations:
Maison Charles Edmond – This beautiful guesthouse is located in Grandes-Bergeronnes, only 22.5 km from Tadoussac and it is perfect for 2 to 4 people. All the rooms in the house have a seating area, there is free Wi-Fi all over the accommodation and some activities that you can do during your stay include cycling or hiking.
La Maison du Forgeron – Also in Grandes-Bergeronnes, here is a wonderful vacation home perfect for a group of 4 or 6 people, depending on your desired package. During your stay, you can relax in the beautiful garden, cook your own meals in the fully equipped kitchen and benefit from free Wi-Fi!
Chalet chez les Petit – In case you are dreaming of staying in a beachfront house, this would be the perfect option for you! This chalet near Tadoussac is also located in Grandes-Bergeronnes, right on the beach and I would recommend it for up to 5 people. After a day of exploration, you can relax in the garden located right in front of the sea – what more can you wish for?
Centre de Vacances 5 Étoiles Family Resort – This time I am recommending something in Sacré-Coeur-Saguenay, 15 minutes away from Tadoussac by car. One of the best things about this Tadoussac accommodation is the on-site zoo, the option of staying in a yurt (a traditional Mongolian home), endless fun activities and more! They have different chalets and studios that you can choose from and they fit from 2 to 6 people – so everyone is welcome!
Type in your dates below to find out the rates:

Conclusion
This was my complete list of recommendations for Tadoussac hotels, as well as some apartments and holiday homes/chalets located close to the city. Each of the accommodation options in this list is fit for a specific type of budget and I have sorted them for your convenience.
As always, all of my recommendations are carefully selected by me and they have flawless reviews, great facilities and service, and a very good value for money!
That being said, I hope you will find the best option for your stay and I hope you will enjoy your every minute there and your Tadoussac whale watching experience!
If you have any further questions, let me know in the comments – I am happy to help!
