When Ichigo beat him, when he conceeded victory to Ichigo and gave his promised explination for why he'd been standing against Rukia the way he had, Byakuya looks directly at Ichigo. He looks tired. He's resigned. He doesn't want it to be this way, but he's been unable to see any way out.

Someone has to uphold the law, his family makes and enforces those laws, his division makes and enforces those laws, HE makes and enforces those laws.

How can he call himself righteous and a good leader, how can he fulfill the weighty duties laid on his shoulders and keep the promises to be good, if he makes exceptions for himself?

If he doesn't uphold those laws and make an aspirational example of himself, why would anyone else follow those laws? Why would they follow him? How could he be worthy of what he has if he doesn't fulfill his duty and responsibilty with grace and honor?

He never wanted to hurt or stand opposed to Rukia, not for a single second, but the avalanche of all the rules and guidelines that have dictated his life and formed his whole worldview said he had to.

So to Ichigo he says "If we do not uphold the law, who will?"

And Ichigo presents him with the revolutionary idea to fight that law.

That instead of upholding the letter of the law, Byakuya can uphold the spirit of it - the real justice it was trying to preserve and protect. To act in a way that's just regardless of a law.

The law was in place to prevent atrocities, but blindly following it nearly caused one. You can make exceptions for circumstances and have it not be corruption.

Byakuya then takes that revelation and lesson and burns it into his bones, so that when Tsukishima comes along he can say that no matter the rule/law/custom based obligation he has to someone, if they are against Ichigo, who he knows to be good and righteous, then they are in the wrong and his enemy.

He doesn't bother to look at Tsukishima. He doesn't look conflicted or sad. He's a bit disgusted with the man and maybe melancholy, but he's already forgetting this man because he's proven he isn't worth Byakuya's time by turning against Ichigo.

Ichigo is worth all his time and care because of the good he's consistently done, so Byakuya made him one of the people he will always make an exception for.

In fact, his most immediate application of this new worldview was for Ichigo's sake.

Byakuya told no one about the hollow mask.

There is certainly a law or rule in place to report anyone using hollow powers after the visard incident, but Byakuya doesn't report it because Ichigo is a good man and (pretty obviously) doesn't know much about what was done to him. He isn't some power-crazed maniac or experimenting on anyone or trying to overthrow anything like the sort of people that order to report would be seeking out. Ichigo just is what he is and is using his power to HELP and Byakuya recognizes that and protects him with silence.

Never going to get over the fact Ichigo blew past every enemy, every ally, every dear friend laying wounded and bleeding and broken on the ground to quietly stand with Byakuya in what they both thought were his final moments.

He checked on Rukia, but left her on the ground.

He checked on Renji, but left him collapsed in rubble.

He'd left behind his human friends.

He'd torn through the one enemy directly in front of him and blew past all the rest as unimportant.

All to be at Byakuya's side. All to listen to what might have been his final words and last request and cry with him over the horror and tragedy of his death and the ruin of Soul Society.

This is equally as profoundly devoted and romantic as Byakuya unhesitatingly killing someone he thought was a mentor because they were Ichigo's enemy.

They both, in separate situations, unprompted by anyone, chose the other over everyone else in a desperate situation.
