Sun in Leo III: Serapis
Sun enters Leo III on 12 Aug 2021 at 7:59 am EDT. Serapis, a syncretic synthesis of Egyptian and Greek mythology, rules the next ten days. What does harmonious diversity look like? Is it imposed, or does it arise naturally? Is it chaos, or homeostasis?
The horoscopes of Decan I of any sign are free to everyone, but Decans II and III are available to supporters of my Patreon account at the $3 or greater tiers. Your generosity through other means, like Ko-fi or PayPal opens the column to any potential readers. I have closed readings through most of August, September and Octber due to my upcoming wedding. Sun in Scorpio III — Kairos
The Sun enters the realm of Kairos/Caerus, the lord of opportunity. What chances will you gather to yourself? What risks will you take to have what you want?
The Sun enters Scorpio III at 36 minutes before midnight on November 11, 2021 — nearly the whole of Armistice Day/Veterans’ Day will pass before the fated moment. Austin Coppock called this decan “The Crow” in his book on the decans, 36 Faces, noting its connection to its administrating planet Venus, and the search for the bright and the shiny that seems to be a feature of those with prominent…

Using a Kamea or Magic Square
Using a Kamea or Magic Square — I learned a few things from @arnemancy and his class on magic & cryptography in the Renaissance...
For the last few weeks I was taking Arnemancy’s class, The Other Trithemian Art, on codes and ciphers in magic. It’s quite an interesting class, and I’ve been enjoying the brain stretch to think about using codes and ciphers in magical and occult practice. It’s not an easy thing to think about — as John Michael Greer has opined, occultism can be defined as ‘discarded knowledge’ of one kind or…

Headless: The Sun on Orion
Headless: The Sun on Orion
Greetings, Headless One, as you near your doom, even as your shoulders bend from the weight. Your sovereign strength grows, but approaches noon; the day draws near when your might shall abate, and your golden head shall roll from your neck. The shimmering sword shall sing as it’s drawnand as summer starts — the blade must swing hard. The sun goes one way on its steady trek while you march farther…

Prudence and her crew
@andrei-trc asked for a spell from @writtensecretsonparchment for being more motivated to learn better in school— “that is, to have the desire to learn with pleasure.” And the spell provided (here) is quite good.  But for magicians, the combination of Memory and Imagination and Will is the real source of delight in learning.  For the author of the Latin book on rhetoric called Ad Herrennium, Memory in particular was the fourth part of Prudentia, which is the wisdom rooted in the capacities of self-management and self-discipline — that is, foresight or the ability to predict future events based on past experience and studied material.  Ad Herrenium’s teachings eventually wound up in the writings of medieval Christian authors like Richard of St. Victor, Boethius, Duns Scotus, Albertus Magnus, and other scholars who used visual pictures to teach memory and awaken the fire of learning in their students.
Yet Memory is only the fourth part of a team.  And wouldn’t you want to have the whole team on your side??  The whole crew?
Based on Ad Herrenium, and its teachings about memory as part of a larger program for the cultivation of enjoyable learning, here is a spell you probably haven’t seen before — an ancient style of magic, a drawn picture for summoning helpful spirits to you.
So for Andrei-TRC to really get what they want, there needs to be a cultivation of a relationship with all of the parts of Prudence/Prudentia... the whole team. These are as follows:
Docilitas, usually translated as ‘docility’, BUT is really “teachability” or the ability to learn from anyone else.  It bears more in common with curiosity than with docility (which we usually use to describe tame animals).
Sollertia, quick-wittedness, that allows us to take command of ourselves in uncertain or dangerous situations; or to make swift, humorous remarks in safe settings.
Ratio, or rationality, the ability to compare and contrast alternate options with one another, and to research and understand different choices.
Memoria, the capacity to recall information easily to one’s mind from written, oral, or visualized sources, and recite it accurately;
Circumspectio, the ability to ‘walk around’ the outside of a situation or experience, and see it from the perspective of many different participants or groups.
Providentia, the capacity to use prior events to predict future events, and whether a specific course of action will lead to or away from a specific goal or objective.
Cautio, the capacity to minimize risk through an analysis of what are the likely points of failure in any given plan, and what are the ways to minimize these points of failure.
In other words, this is a spell which is greater yet for cultivating the pleasure of learning, by activating the spirit or mindset or soul-function of all of the things that learning is good for doing — in pagan and medieval philosophical thought, the cultivation of your relationship with the angel or goddess Prudentia and her four handmaidens (Docilitas, Sollertia, Memoria, and Providentia) and three guardians (Ratio, Circumspectio, and Cautio).
It’s important to recognize that ancient and medieval authors had no trouble personifying these aspects of their souls, and externalizing them (that is, making them exterior forces).  Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of the runaway bestseller Eat Pray Love, did the same thing:  in her popular TED Talk, she said that the hardest thing about sitting down to write her next novel was the paralysis engendered by thinking she didn’t have another novel of that quality in her... and the only way to re-activate her writing capabilities was to call the spirit of her creativity, her muse, to her writing space and put that spirit in a place where she and the spirit could talk to one another.
You’re about to do the same thing.
Accordingly, draw a bad picture of Prudentia in the back of a notebook: a pretty woman with binoculars hanging from her neck (that’s the foresight), a book in her left hand (that’s the hindsight) and a wand (the emblem of self-command) in her right hand.  Label her with her name. Then draw a picture of each of her male servants at the corners of the page, again with ‘bad pictures’:
Cautio has a beard and a helmet, and shoulder armor (pauldrons), and stands with a spear in one hand (to threaten away danger at a distance), and a shield in the other with a sun on it (to ward off danger that is close at hand).
Ratio is described ‘as a scribe’, so draw him with a clipboard and a pen, taking notes and listening with an attentive ear to his mistress.
Circumspectio’s description doesn’t make sense to a modern audience, but it’s best to think of him as a runner or a swimmer - that is, a lean-bodied athlete; you can give him winged sandals like Mercury, running shoes, and a camera or smartphone in one hand, and one of those tactical boards from a football locker room, with X’s and Os, and arrows showing where people are going.
Then you can draw Prudentia's inner circle around her, closer in:
Docilitas is the library nerd girl with big glasses, a book in one hand and a pen in the other, sitting at table with a stack of books.  She’s eager to learn, curious about anything and everything, and will take in information like a sponge.
Sollertia is the funny girl.  She’s laughing, that’s the most important thing about her; but she’s got a backpack on (literally a bag of tricks), and she’s got a dagger in one hand (for sharp wit), and a feather in the other (for tickling your fancy with funny ideas).
Memoria is the serious girl. Maybe she dresses in all black with platform goth boots; maybe she’s just got converse high-tops. She’s holding a skull in one hand, and a book in the other.
Providentia is the organized girl.  She’s got a calendar or datebook in one hand, and leans on a yard- or meter-stick. She knows when the projects are due and which of your partners aren’t going to do the work (and which are).
Once the pictures are drawn (and again, they don’t have to be good at all!), look at the picture each day before you leave the house, and invite the whole crew to come with you to school.  Imagine them picking their way out of the picture, and coming to sit on your shoulders, four on the left (Prudentia herself closest to your ear), and then the others on the right.  Take the picture with you to school if need be, too, and look at it between classes, or at the break.
Once you’re in class, pay attention to the teacher, just like normal, but ask your shoulder crew what they think about the lesson.  Providentia will help you understand what you should write down from the white board or the presentation.  Memoria will jog your elbow and say, “remember that.”  Sollertia will tell you funny but accurate things to say in class.  Docilitas will teach you to be curious about just about anything, and she’ll prompt you to ask smart questions when she wants to know more.  You’ll learn more.
The boys are just as helpful. Circumspectio should be able to run around and see the event in history class from several angles, and knows how to play the “on the one hand/on the other hand” game in an essay in a language class.  Ratio knows exactly what’s likely to be on the test, and has a gift for science and foreign languages.  Cautio is able to ‘read the room’ and know when Sollertia’s joke will get a pass, and when to let it lie.
At the end of the day of exciting and interesting learning, thank the seven and return them to their portrait.  Once they’re back in the portrait, ask them what they thought of the day — one at a time, and Prudentia herself, the leader of the pack, always speaks first and last.  At the start of the next day, as you call them out to sit on your shoulders, ask them what they think you should be paying attention to, on the way to and from class.
Periodically, maybe once a semester or so, try drawing a new version of the seven.  You’ll find that, if you’ve been paying attention to their counsel, that it is easier to draw them even if you haven’t been practicing drawing or sketching as a skill. Your connection to them will make it easier to draw them.  You can also dab their portraits with a drop of olive oil as an offering or in thanks when you pass a test; they rarely need more, though for something big like a Bar Exam or a graduate entrance exam, you might give them a dollop of alcohol each. From a high schooler or undergrad, they will not expect much besides your company.
And now, consider: you have learned to go to school with a whole team of support staff whose job it is to entertain and amuse you with the content of the things that you’re learning about.
And you have learned to cast a spell by drawing pictures, which is truly a valuable skill.
When you’re done with the seven, and deepened your connection with them as much as you wish, invite them out of the portrait to take their proper places in your own soul, and destroy their portrait(s) with as much reverence and ceremony as you can arrange.
