Should it succeed at gaining the program’s favor, they could end up with $35 million in non-dilutive financing over the next 3 years. Horizon has indeed made some promising headway on developing a full-scale Cavorite X5, busy at work testing its 50% scale prototype as it moves along in the highly competitive AFWERX HSVTOL challenge. “Astro is grateful to remain a strategic investor and partner as we collectively move towards building a better future,” said Bent in early August.

The shift is expected to set the company up for a round of series A funding to enable at least 24 months of continuous - and expensive - development of the company’s prototype Cavorite X-series eVTOL. Upon the signing of the initial agreement, Astro CEO Bruce Bent said that “horizon’s progress has been nothing short of outstanding over the last year with several grants, a USAF contract award, and a large-scale prototype ready to fly.” The deal allowed Astro Aerospace to sell 100% of Horizon Aircraft equity to several key Astro shareholders in exchange for certain public securities and a fraction of the now-privatized Horizon. News of the deal broke in early August after the agreement was announced, and has now been completed, making Horizon Aircraft a standalone company once again. The deal saw the transfer of Horizon over to a group of Astro shareholders in a move that CEO Brandon Robinson says will “allow Horizon Aircraft to accelerate development of our eVTOL in the private sector with access to more flexible funding mechanisms”. Without passengers or cargo, the Cavorite X5’s range gets bumped up to a much more impressive 1000 kilometers or 625 miles. The EVTOL has seating for 5 people and enough space for cargo to match. With an LS V8 engine onboard and a relatively modest battery system, the Cavorite X5 can achieve cruise speeds of up to 350 km/h, traveling as far as 500 kilometers while carrying cargo. The plane takes on those very characteristics too, with its unique ability to hover vertically before flying like a normal plane. The Cavorite X5 comes named after a fictional super-material first mentioned in H.G> Wells’ 1901 book The First Men in the Moon, which, when cooled, can cancel out the effects of gravity. It sports the aesthetic of a sleek stealth-bomber, and comes with wings that, get this, split open to reveal multiple fans underneath (yes, wings with FANS!) These fans help the EVTOL take off and land vertically (like a helicopter) on a landing pad, and the outer covers close shut to turn the X5 into a wing-based aircraft that can hit speeds of up to 350 km/h (217mph). Just on face value, the Horizon Cavorite X5 looks like an absolute sci-fi wet-dream. However, Canada’s Horizon Aircraft has a pretty interesting aircraft with a hybrid power system and a patent-pending wing design. It’s an incredibly tricky maneuver that’s fuel-intensive, and it becomes doubly complicated when you’re trying to make the entire aircraft an electric machine. Science fiction would have you believe it’s pretty easy to have an aircraft that takes off vertically like a helicopter, and then suddenly sprouts wings and thrusters which let it fly like a jet.

The Cavorite X5 is an eVTOL designed by Horizon Aircraft which takes its aim to operate for applications including disaster relief, emergency medical, cargo transport, and air taxi services. The aircraft uses two primary means of propulsion: 16 duct-in-wing motors that allow the aircraft to move vertically, and a more powerful hybrid-electric motor to produce more powerful horizontal thrust. As a result, during cruise, this X5 flies more like a plane than it does a multicopter. This design accommodates one pilot and four passengers, with a typical cruise speed of 215 mph and a range of approximately 310 miles. The larger hybrid-electric engine and wings allow the aircraft to be landed conventionally if there is insufficient battery power to land vertically.
