Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
Glengarry Glen Ross was on my watch list but I couldn’t remember what it was about as I hit "play". While traveling for work, I found some time to sit down and watch it from my hotel room, which is ironic considering the subject matter. The way it makes you think you've got a character figured out - until you don't - takes you through so many different emotional states that it becomes unforgettable.
At a real estate company, four salesmen – Richard Roma (Al Pacino), Sheldon Levene (Jack Lemmon), George Aaronow (Alan Arkin) and Dave Moss (Ed Harris) – receive a visit from a motivational speaker from the firm. After a barrage of insults, Blake (Alec Baldwin) informs them that at the end of the week, the top seller will receive a new car, while the bottom two sellers will lose their jobs.
Before Blake comes in to give his legendary speech, you see the four salesmen run through their arsenal of tricks in unsuccessful attempts to sell the real estate they’ve been assigned. No one outside of Richard seems to have any success and all everyone does is complain to the office manager, John Williamson (Kevin Spacey). Everyone claims the leads (the names and phone numbers of potential buyers) are worthless, that their sale numbers are down because of the leads, that if they could only have access to the Glengarry Highlands development leads, they would have some great numbers to show and so on. You think to yourself “These loser con artists are constantly making excuses. What they need is to be taught a lesson.” Then, Blake comes in. You’ve probably heard some excerpts of his profanity-filled “Closers” speech but you’re not ready for just how detestable a “motivational speaker” he is. Half of the office losing their job at the end of the week? What kind of soulless corporate weasels would agree to such a thing? Now, the way you feel about Richard, Sheldon, George and Dave has shifted. They’re still losers but you feel bad for them.
That’s a drastic shift to go through within only a few minutes and it’s not the only one you’ll experience listening to the brilliant dialogue by David Mamet (who bases the screenplay off of his play by the same name). You think you’ve got a character figured out and then they’ll say or do something that will make you place them in a completely different camp. You have no idea how the film will end, who will get fired, who will keep their job, or even where the characters will be positioned on the “love ‘em or loathe them” scale by the time the credits start rolling.
When a film is based on a play, you can usually tell. The limited number of locations and characters, the heavy emphasis on dialogue, etc. give away that what you’re seeing is an adaptation of a different medium. The theater might have a lot in common with film but it differs in some important ways. In Glengarry Glen Ross, you can hardly tell because keeping the action within just a few places and focusing on what the characters are saying is the choice director James Foley would've made regardless. Other non-sales-related characters and places are alluded to but we almost never actually go there or talk to them. After Blake's speech, they don’t matter. The deadline introduced is suffocating, it’s shrinking the world around these people. We’ll get to relax after it’s all done. Seeing a world beyond the sales? That’s for closers.
Earlier this year, a motivational speaker was brought in to talk in my department at work. They talked a lot about courage, about standing up and getting things done so you would feel good about the goals you’d set for yourself personally and professionally. The reaction from my coworkers was mixed. I heard someone describe the speaker as “Someone who must've realized one day that you can make a living by regurgitating inspirational boards you see for sale in the Home Décor section”. I wonder how everyone would've felt if we instead got someone like Blake. I'm glad all I have to do is wonder. It's not just the "Closers" speech that makes Glengarry Glen Ross memorable, however. The great dialogue, excellent performances, the way it gets you to keep changing your perspective and the suffocating deadline imposed on the characters makes it a film you can't forget. Why Did More Than 1,000 People Die After Police Subdued Them With Force That Isn’t Meant To Kill?
— In Partnership With: Associated Press (AP)
— March 28, 2024 | Frontline | NOBA — PBS
— By Reese Dunklin | Ryan J. Foley | Jeff Martin | Jennifer McDermott | Holbrook Mohr | John Seewer
This combination of photos shows, top row from left, Anthony Timpa, Austin Hunter Turner, Carl Grant, Damien Alvarado, Delbert McNiel and Demetrio Jackson; second row from left, Drew Edwards, Evan Terhune, Giovani Berne, Glenn Ybanez, Ivan Gutzalenko and Mario Clark; bottom row from left, Michael Guillory, Robbin McNeely, Seth Lucas, Steven Bradley Beasley, Taylor Ware and Terrell "Al" Clark. Each died after separate encounters with police in which officers used force that is not supposed to be deadly. (AP Photo)
Carl Grant, a Vietnam veteran with dementia, wandered out of a hospital room to charge a cellphone he imagined he had. When he wouldn’t sit still, the police officer escorting Grant body-slammed him, ricocheting the patient’s head off the floor.
Taylor Ware, a former Marine and aspiring college student, walked the grassy grounds of an interstate rest stop trying to shake the voices in his head. After Ware ran from an officer, he was attacked by a police dog, jolted by a stun gun, pinned on the ground and injected with a sedative.
And Donald Ivy Jr., a former three-sport athlete, left an ATM alone one night when officers sized him up as suspicious and tried to detain him. Ivy took off, and police tackled and shocked him with a stun gun, belted him with batons and held him facedown.
Each man was unarmed. Each was not a threat to public safety. And despite that, each died after police used a kind of force that is not supposed to be deadly — and can be much easier to hide than the blast of an officer’s gun.
Every day, police rely on common tactics that, unlike guns, are meant to stop people without killing them, such as physical holds, Tasers and body blows. But when misused, these tactics can still end in death — as happened with George Floyd in 2020, sparking a national reckoning over policing. And while that encounter was caught on video, capturing Floyd’s last words of “I can’t breathe,” many others throughout the United States have escaped notice.
Over a decade, more than 1,000 people died after police subdued them through means not intended to be lethal, an investigation led by The Associated Press found. In hundreds of cases, officers weren’t taught or didn’t follow best safety practices for physical force and weapons, creating a recipe for death.
This story is part of an ongoing investigation led by The Associated Press in collaboration with the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism programs and FRONTLINE (PBS). The investigation includes the Lethal Restraint interactive story, database and the documentary, Documenting Police Use Of Force, premiering April 30 on PBS.
These sorts of deadly encounters happened just about everywhere, according to an analysis of a database AP created. Big cities, suburbs and rural America. Red states and blue states. Restaurants, assisted-living centers and, most commonly, in or near the homes of those who died. The deceased came from all walks of life — a poet, a nurse, a saxophone player in a mariachi band, a truck driver, a sales director, a rodeo clown and even a few off-duty law enforcement officers.
Explore: Lethal Restraint
The toll, however, disproportionately fell on Black Americans like Grant and Ivy. Black people made up a third of those who died despite representing only 12% of the U.S. population. Others feeling the brunt were impaired by a medical, mental health or drug emergency, a group particularly susceptible to force even when lightly applied.
“We were robbed,” said Carl Grant’s sister, Kathy Jenkins, whose anger has not subsided four years later. “It’s like somebody went in your house and just took something, and you were violated.”
AP’s three-year investigation was done in collaboration with the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism programs at the University of Maryland and Arizona State University, and FRONTLINE (PBS). The AP and its partners focused on local police, sheriff’s deputies and other officers patrolling the streets or responding to dispatch calls. Reporters filed nearly 7,000 requests for government documents and body-camera footage, receiving more than 700 autopsy reports or death certificates, and uncovering video in at least four dozen cases that has never been published or widely distributed.
Medical officials cited law enforcement as causing or contributing to about half of the deaths. In many others, significant police force went unmentioned and drugs or preexisting health conditions were blamed instead.
Video in a few dozen cases showed some officers mocked people as they died, laughing or making comments such as “sweaty little hog,” “screaming like a little girl” and “lazy f—.” In other cases, officers expressed clear concern for the people they were subduing.
The federal government has struggled for years to count deaths following what police call “less-lethal force,” and the little information it collects is often kept from the public and highly incomplete at best. No more than a third of the cases the AP identified are listed in federal mortality data as involving law enforcement at all.
When force came, it could be sudden and extreme, the AP investigation found. Other times, the force was minimal, and yet the people nevertheless died, sometimes from a drug overdose or a combination of factors.
In about 30% of the cases, police were intervening to stop people who were injuring others or who posed a threat of danger. But roughly 25% of those who died were not harming anyone or, at most, were committing low-level infractions or causing minor disturbances, AP’s review of cases shows. The rest involved other nonviolent situations with people who, police said, were trying to resist arrest or flee.
A Texas man loitering outside a convenience store who resisted going to jail was shocked up to 11 times with a Taser and restrained facedown for nearly 22 minutes — more than twice as long as George Floyd, previously unreported video shows. After a California man turned silent during questioning, he was grabbed, dogpiled by seven officers, shocked five times with a Taser, wrapped in a restraint contraption and injected with a sedative by a medic despite complaining “I can’t breathe.” And a Michigan teen was speeding an all-terrain vehicle down a city street when a state trooper sent volts of excruciating electricity from a Taser through him, and he crashed.
In hundreds of cases, officers repeated errors that experts and trainers have spent years trying to eliminate — perhaps none more prevalent than how they held someone facedown in what is known as prone restraint.
Many policing experts agree that someone can stop breathing if pinned on their chest for too long or with too much weight, and the Department of Justice has issued warnings to that effect since 1995. But with no standard national rules, what police are taught is often left to the states and individual departments. In dozens of cases, officers disregarded people who told them they were struggling for air or even about to die, often uttering the words, “I can’t breathe.”
What followed deadly encounters revealed how the broader justice system frequently works to shield police from scrutiny, often leaving families to grieve without knowing what really happened.
Officers were usually cleared by their departments in internal investigations. Some had a history of violence and a few were involved in multiple restraint deaths. Local and state authorities that investigate deaths also withheld information and in some cases omitted potentially damaging details from reports.
One of the last hopes for accountability from inside the system — what are known as death opinions — also often exonerated officers. The medical examiners and coroners who decide on these did not link hundreds of the deaths to force, but instead to accidents, drug use or preexisting health problems, sometimes relying on debunked science or incomplete studies from sources tied to law enforcement.
Even when these deaths receive the homicide label that fatal police shootings often get, prosecutors rarely pursue officers. Charging police is politically sensitive and can be legally fraught, and the AP investigation identified just 28 deaths that led to such charges. Finding accountability through civil courts was also tough for families, but at least 168 cases ended in settlements or jury verdicts totaling about $374 million.
The known fatalities still averaged just two a week — a tiny fraction of the total contacts police have with the population. Police leaders, officers and experts say law enforcement shouldn’t bear all the blame. As the social safety net frays, people under mental distress or who use stimulant drugs like cocaine or methamphetamine are increasingly on the streets. Officers sent to handle these emergencies are often poorly trained by their departments.
If incidents turn chaotic and officers make split-second decisions to use force, “people do die,” said Peter Moskos, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and former Baltimore police officer.
“The only way to get down to zero is to get rid of policing,” Moskos said, “and that’s not going to save lives either.”
But because the United States has no clear idea how many people die like this and why, holding police accountable and making meaningful reforms will remain difficult, said Dr. Roger Mitchell Jr., a leader in the push to improve tracking and one of the nation’s few Black chief medical examiners when he held the office in Washington, D.C., from 2014 to 2021.
“Any time anyone dies before their day in court, or dies in an environment where the federal government or the local government’s job is to take care of you,” he said, “it needs transparency. It cannot be in the dark of night.”
“This,” he added, “is an American problem we need to solve.”
Those Who Died
Carl Grant didn’t care much for football. So on Super Bowl Sunday in 2020, family members said, he eased into his black Kia Optima, intending to shop for groceries near his suburban Atlanta home. The 68-year-old wound up 2½ hours away, where he came face to face with police in an encounter that underscores several findings central to AP’s investigation: He was Black, he was not threatening physical harm, and a seemingly routine matter rapidly escalated.
The former Marine and trucking business owner had dementia and qualified as a disabled veteran. As he drove that evening, he became disoriented and took an interstate west to Birmingham, Alabama. There, Grant twice tried to go inside houses he thought were his.
In the family photo on the left, Carl Grant prepares to cook in the home he shared with his partner, Ronda Hernandez, in Redlands, Calif., circa 2000. Both times, residents phoned 911. And both times, responding officers opted to use force.
At the first house, Grant was taken to the ground and cuffed after an officer said he’d stepped toward a partner. Even though one officer sensed he was impaired, police released Grant without asking medics to examine him — a decision a superior later faulted.
At a second house about a half-mile away, police found him sitting in a porch chair. When he didn’t follow an order to get off the porch, a different officer pushed him down the stairs, according to previously unreleased body-camera video. Grant gashed his forehead in the fall.
Officer Vincent Larry, who pushed Grant, went with him to the hospital. When Grant wouldn’t return to his exam room, Larry used an unapproved “hip toss” to lift and slam him, hospital surveillance video showed. The back of Grant’s head bounced four inches off the floor, a nurse estimated, wrecking his spinal cord in his neck.
After Grant awoke from emergency surgery, he thought his paralysis was a combat injury from the Vietnam War. “I’m so sorry this happened,” he told family, his sister recalled. He died almost six months later from the injury.
An internal investigation concluded Larry’s force at the hospital was excessive, and in a departure from many other cases AP found, his department acted: he received a 15-day suspension. He is no longer a city employee, a Birmingham spokesperson told AP. Neither Larry nor the department would comment. A judge recently cited a procedural error in dismissing a lawsuit filed by Grant’s estate, which is appealing the ruling.
“He’s almost 70 and confused,” Grant’s partner, Ronda Hernandez, said. “That’s what I don’t get. You just don’t do that to old people.”
Grant was one of 1,036 deaths from 2012 through 2021 that AP logged. That is certainly an undercount, because many departments blocked access to information. Files that others released were blacked out and video blurred, while officers routinely used vague language in their reports that glossed over force.
All but 3% of the dead were men. They tended to be in their 30s and 40s, when police might consider them more of a physical threat. The youngest was just 15, the oldest 95.
In sheer numbers, white people of non-Hispanic descent were the largest group, making up more than 40% of cases. Hispanics were just under 20% of those killed. But Black Americans were hit especially hard.
The disproportionate representation of Black people tracks research findings that they face higher rates and severity of force, and even deaths. The Department of Justice has found after multiple investigations that Black people accounted for more unjustified stops for minor offenses, illegal searches that produced no contraband, unnecessary force, or arrests without probable cause.
Researchers caution that proving — or disproving — discrimination can be hard because of a lack of information. But in some cases AP identified, officers were accused of profiling and stopping Black people based on suspicions, as happened to Donald “Dontay” Ivy Jr.
A demonstrator holds a sign in support of Donald "Dontay" Ivy during a rally outside Albany District Attorney David Soares' office in Albany, N.Y., on Monday, Aug. 10, 2015. Ivy was cooperative when police stopped him, but, they said, he wouldn’t answer how much money he had withdrawn from an ATM and denied a prior arrest. Police interpreted Ivy’s behavior as deceptive. What they didn’t grasp was that Ivy suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. After an officer touched Ivy to detain him, Ivy fled. Officers caught up and beat him with batons, shocked him several times with a Taser, put him facedown and got on top of him.

Ivy was a 39-year-old resident of Albany, New York, who excelled in basketball during high school, served in the U.S. Navy and graduated college with a business degree. On a freezing night in 2015, he went to an ATM to check whether a delayed disability deposit had posted. Officers thought he seemed suspicious because he was walking with a lean and only one hand in the pocket of his “puffer” coat — indications, they thought, he might have a gun or drugs.
Ivy was cooperative when they stopped him, but, they said, he wouldn’t answer how much money he had withdrawn and denied a prior arrest. Police interpreted Ivy’s behavior as deceptive without grasping that Ivy suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. A witness recounted that Ivy seemed “slow” when he spoke.
When an officer touched Ivy to detain him — a known trigger for some with severe mental illness — police say Ivy began to resist. An officer fired a Taser, then Ivy fled. Officers caught up and beat him with batons, shocked him several more times with a Taser, put him facedown and got on top of him. By the time they rolled Ivy over, he’d stopped breathing.
The department quickly ruled that the officers acted appropriately and blamed a “medical crisis” for his death, even though it was classified a homicide. A grand jury declined to indict. However, the local prosecutor urged police to review policies for Tasers, batons and dealing with people with mental illness.
The local chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union continued to question the stop, saying there was “strong reason to suspect” Ivy was racially profiled. After years in court, the city paid $625,000 to settle with Ivy’s estate. His cousin and close friend Chamberlain Guthrie said the way Ivy’s life ended was one of the most painful things his family had endured.
“It’d be one thing if Dontay was out here being a ruffian and he was a thug,” Guthrie said. “But he was none of that.”
When Force Goes Wrong
When people died after police subdued them, it was often because officers went too fast, too hard or for too long — many times, all of the above.
The United States has no national rules for how exactly to apply force. Instead, Supreme Court decisions set broad guard rails that weigh force as either “objectively reasonable” or “excessive,” based in part on the severity of the situation, any immediate safety threat and active resistance.
That frequently leaves states and local law enforcement to sort out the particulars in training and policies. Best practices from the government and private law enforcement organizations have tried to fill gaps, but aren’t mandatory and sometimes go ignored, as happened in hundreds of cases reviewed by AP and its partners.
Tom Ware holds photos of his son, Taylor Ware, on his phone in Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday, June 6, 2023. The aspiring college student and former Marine died after a violent encounter with police during a manic episode caused by bipolar disorder. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)
In 2019, the mother of Taylor Ware, the former Marine with college plans, called 911 when he wouldn’t get back in their SUV during a manic episode caused by bipolar disorder. She told the dispatcher Ware would need space and urged police to wait for backup because he was a former wrestler and might be a handful — advice that tracked best practices, yet wasn’t followed.
The first officer to encounter Ware at a highway rest stop in Indiana saw the 24-year-old extending him a hand in greeting. Ware then calmly walked through a grassy field and sat down with folded legs.
The officer, an unpaid reserve marshal, assured Ware’s mother he’d had calls like this before. As she and a family friend watched, he stopped about 10 feet in front of Ware, according to video filmed by the friend and obtained by AP. His police dog barked and lunged several times — a provocation officers are told to avoid with the emotionally distressed. Ware remained seated.
After a few minutes, Ware walked toward the parking lot. There, the officer said, Ware pushed him away, a split-second act disputed by the friend. Her video shows Ware running and the officer commanding the dog to attack, setting off a cascade of force that ended with Ware in a coma. He died three days later.

A police news release said Ware had a “medical event,” an explanation that echoes how police first described George Floyd’s death. The prosecutor in Indiana declined to bring charges and praised officers for “incredible patience and restraint.” His office’s letter brushed past or left out key details: multiple dog bites, multiple stun-gun shocks, prone restraint and an injection of the powerful sedative ketamine.
In dozens of other cases identified by AP, people who died were given sedatives without consent, sometimes after officers urged paramedics to use them — a recommendation law enforcement is unqualified to make.
A coroner ruled Ware’s death was due to natural causes, specifically “excited delirium” — a term for a condition that police say causes potentially life-threatening agitation, rapid heart rate and other symptoms. Major medical groups oppose it as a diagnosis, however, and say it is frequently an attempt to justify excessive force.
“It was like that was his body’s own fault, that it wasn’t the police’s fault,” Ware’s sister, Briana Garton, said of the autopsy ruling.
Two experts who reviewed the case for the AP said police actions — such as the order for the dog to attack, the use of a Taser in the sternum and restraint facedown with handcuffs and back pressure — contributed to Ware’s death.
“This was not proper service,” said police practices expert Stan Kephart, himself a former chief. “This person should be alive today.”
As with Ware, officers resorted to force in roughly 25% of the cases even though the circumstances weren’t imminently dangerous. Many began as routine calls that other officers have, time and again, resolved safely. Those included medical emergencies phoned in by families, friends or the person who died.
By launching prematurely into force, police introduced violence and volatility, and in turn needed to use more weapons, holds or restraints to regain control — a phenomenon known as “officer-created jeopardy.” Sometimes it starts when police misread as defiance someone’s confusion, intoxication or inability to communicate due to a medical issue.
What led up to the force was sometimes unclear. In more than 100 cases, police either withheld key details or witnesses disputed the officer’s account — and body-camera footage didn’t exist to add clarity. But in about 45% of cases, officers became physical after they said someone tried to evade them or resist arrest for nonviolent circumstances. Some sprinted away with drugs, for example, or simply flailed their arms to resist handcuffs or wiggled around while held down.
Many times the way officers subdued people broke policing best practices, especially when using the go-to tools of restraining people facedown and shocking them with Tasers.
When done properly, placing someone on their stomach or shocking them is not inherently life-threatening. But there are risks: Prone restraint can compress the lungs and put stress on the heart, and Taser’s maker has issued warnings against repeated shocks or targeting the body near the heart. These risks intensify when safety protocols aren’t followed or when people with mental illness, the elderly or those on stimulant drugs are involved.
Some officers involved in fatalities testified they had been assured that prone position was never deadly, AP found, while many others were trained to roll people onto their sides to aid breathing and simply failed to do so.
“If you’re talking, you’re breathing, bro,” an officer, repeating a common myth about prone restraint, told a Florida man following 12 shocks from stun guns.
“Stomach is (an) ideal place for them to be. It’s harder for them to punch me,” testified an officer in the death of a Minnesota man found sleeping at a grocery store and restrained for more than 30 minutes.
In dozens of police or witness videos, those who died began to fade on screen, their breathing becoming shallow, as happened in suburban San Diego to 56-year-old Oral Nunis.
Nunis was having a mental break at his daughter’s apartment in 2020. He had calmed down, but then the first arriving officer grabbed his arm, a mere four seconds after making eye contact. Nunis begged to go without being handcuffed. The officer persisted. Nunis became agitated and ran outside.
At 5 feet, 5 inches tall and 146 pounds, Nunis quickly found himself pinned by several officers — each at least 80 pounds heavier than him. Although his body turned still, they kept pressing, wrapped him in a full-body restraint device and put a spit mask on him. From just 10 feet away, his daughter tried to console him in his final minutes: “Daddy, just breathe.”
In the left-hand image from Chula Vista Police Department body-camera video, an officer approaches Oral Nunis, 56, with handcuffs. In the right-hand image, officers restrain Nunis after he ran out of his daughter’s California apartment in 2020. (Chula Vista Police Department via AP)
The district attorney’s office later cleared the police, calling their force reasonable because Nunis had posed “unnaturally strong resistance” for his size.
As part of the family’s lawsuit, two pathologists concluded that the restraint officers used led to his death. One officer was asked under oath if pressure on someone’s back could impair breathing. “I have had several bodies on top of me during different training scenarios,” the 6-foot, 265-pound officer said, “and I never had difficulty breathing.”
The use of Tasers can be similarly misinformed. An officer shocked Stanley Downen, 77, a former ironworker with Alzheimer’s disease who served during the Korean War, as he wandered the grounds of his veterans’ home in Columbia Falls, Montana. The electricity locked up his body and made him fall without control of his limbs. He hit his head on the pavement and later died.
The officer said under oath that he hadn’t read any warnings, including those from Taser manufacturer Axon Enterprise Inc., about the risks of shocking the elderly or people who could be injured if they fell. He testified that Downen was “armed with rocks,” but a witness told police Downen never raised his hands to throw them. The police chief cleared the officer, though a police expert hired by the family found he failed to follow accepted practices.
In about 30% of deaths that AP logged, civilians and officers faced potential or clear danger, extenuating circumstances that meant police didn’t always follow best practices. In about 170 of those cases, officers said a person charged, swung or lunged at them, or police arrived to find people holding someone down after a fight. In the other roughly 110 cases, police were trying to stop violent attacks against others, including officers.
There was a Kansas man who used his elderly mother as a shield when deputies arrived. And there was a 41-year-old concrete mason in Minnesota who choked and punched his adult daughter before grabbing an officer by the throat and pushing her into a window.
In one of the most violent encounters, three officers in Cohasset, Massachusetts, confronted Erich Stelzer, a 6-foot-6-inch bodybuilder who was stabbing his date so viciously that the walls were red with her blood.
In this photo provided by the Cohasset Police Department, Maegan Ball, second right, stands with, from left, Officer Aaron Bates, Officer Alexander Stotik, and Detective Lt. Gregory Lennon in Cohasset, Mass., on Dec. 27, 2019. (Cohasset Police Department via AP)
Rather than fire their pistols that night in 2018, two of the officers used their Tasers and managed to handcuff Stelzer, 25, as he thrashed on the floor. Stelzer stopped breathing, and the officers could not revive him. The local prosecutor determined they had handled the situation appropriately and would have been justified in shooting Stelzer because he presented a lethal threat.
While the officers were relieved to have saved the woman’s life, they also wrestled with killing a man despite doing their best to avoid it.
“As the time went by after the incident, you know, it wasn’t lost on me that he was someone’s son, someone’s brother,” Detective Lt. Gregory Lennon said. “And I’m sorry that he died. You know, it wasn’t our intention.”
Lack of Accountability
Understanding how and why people die after force can be difficult. Information is often scarce or government at all levels won’t share what it has.
In 2000, Congress started trying to get the Justice Department to track deaths involving law enforcement. The department has acknowledged its data is incomplete, blames spotty reporting from police departments, and does not make whatever information exists publicly available.
Mortality data maintained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has gaps. The AP found that when a death certificate does not list words like “police” and “law enforcement,” the CDC’s language-reading software doesn’t label the death as involving “legal intervention.” This means the death data flagged police involvement in, at most, 34% of the more than 1,000 deaths the investigation identified.
Among the mislabeled deaths is that of Daniel Prude, a 41-year-old Black man. He died in 2020 while restrained and covered with a spit hood in Rochester, New York. The high-profile incident was caught on video, but while his death certificate noted “physical restraint,” it made no direct mention of police.
The CDC recognizes the data undercounts police-involved deaths, but says it wasn’t primarily intended to flag them. Staff lack the time or resources to corroborate death certificate details, officials said.
In 2017, leading pathologists recommended adding a checkbox to the U.S. standard death certificate to identify deaths involving law enforcement — as is already done with tobacco use and pregnancy. They argued better data could help inform better practices and prevent deaths. However, the proposal hasn’t gained traction.
“This is a long-standing, not-very-secret secret about the problem here: We know very little,” said Georgetown University law professor Christy Lopez, who until 2017 led the Justice Department office that investigates law enforcement agencies over excessive force.
Meanwhile, laws in states like Pennsylvania, Alabama and Delaware block the release of most, if not all, information. And in other places, such as Iowa, departments can choose what they wish to release, even to family members like Sandra Jones.
Jones’ husband, Brian Hays, 56, had battled an addiction to painkillers since injuring his shoulder at a factory job. She last saw him alive one September night in 2015 after he called 911 because his mental health and methamphetamine use was making him delusional. Officers who arrived at their home in Muscatine, Iowa, ordered her to leave.
The next morning, a hospital contacted Jones to say Hays was there. As Hays was on life support, doctors told her that he had several Taser marks on his body and scrapes on his face and knees, she recalled. Neighbors also said they had seen Hays run out of the house, clad only in boxer shorts, and make it around the corner before officers caught him.
When Jones set out to unravel what happened, she said, police wouldn’t hand over their reports. A detective later told her officers had shocked Hays and tied his feet before he went into cardiac arrest. She couldn’t glean why that much force was necessary.
In time, Jones managed to get the autopsy report from the medical examiner’s office, confirming the force and a struggle. But an attorney told her winning a lawsuit to pry out more information was unlikely. Hays’ death didn’t even make the local news.
“All I know is, something terrible happened that night,” she said. “I have pictured him laying on that cement road more times than I can tell you. I picture him there, struggling to breathe.”
This Is How Reporters Documented 1,000 Deaths After Police Force That Isn’t Supposed To Be Fatal! Some of the documents obtained during the Lethal Restraint investigation by The Associated Press in collaboration with the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism and FRONTLINE (PBS) are photographed in New York on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. Relaxing Residences: Cottages On The Greene Foley

Getting to Know Cottages On The Greene, Foley
With the population growing each year, it's not a surprise why a lot of people are having a hard time finding quiet spaces to move into. While bustling metropolitans only seem to expand, the discovery of tranquil retreats is becoming a milestone all of a sudden. New TikToks, reels, and YouTube shorts are becoming viral for providing audiences with information about serene spots. So, peaceful residential locations like the Cottages On The Green, Foley, lay in wait as more homebuyers spread the word. Until then, here are a couple of things you need to know about the area and the properties within it.
What Are Considered Cottages?
We won’t blame you if your definition of a cottage is where someone might meet Jason from Friday the 13th or a meeting spot to have a brush with romance like in The Notebook. We won’t even blame you for mixing up a cottage and cabin. It’s a common impression, and you’re not completely far off. Cabins and cottages tend to have more natural settings surrounding them. The rustic feel is also a running theme among the two. But that’s where most of the similarities stop.
Cottages are more finished versions of cabins. Architecturally, they often feature gabled rooflines, stone walls, oversized chimneys, brick pathways, and thatched roofs. But definitions are loose these days. Location-wise, cabins are perched along wooded or rural areas. Meanwhile, cottages are usually weaven and developed out of the trees and into the suburbs
The gated Cottages on the Greene is roughly 8 minutes from Central Foley. This quaint neighborhood sits along Country Road 12, where pavements perfectly contrast the greenery from manicured lawns and well-maintained growths from empty lots. Verdant flora decorate the community, giving residents the daily opportunity to reconnect with nature. As an added bonus, you can keep your hands clean because the HOA is in charge of maintaining your lawns, too!
Unique Features And Amenities
Cottages on the Greene, much like other properties on a suburban area, are heavily associated with family-friendly characteristics. This is partly due to the population of these communities which are mainly composed of starting and established families looking to give their kids a safe and stable life. The sense of community primarily drives developers of these localities to establish comunal features.
The Cottages neighborhood has a few of these shared spaces. if you’re interested to move into the area, these are the community amenities you can expect:
Clubhouse
Meeting room
Banquet room
TV room
Fitness area
Resort-style saltwater pool
Walking paths
Interior Design and Comfort
There's a preconceived notion like cottages our old school and vintage by design. However, many are surprised that the interior of these homes have been crafted to look more contemporary and up-to-date with the modern times. It's a pleasant surprise for home hunters who take tours and go on open houses.
You would think that the contrast between the interior and exterior or designs one clash, builders and developers have found a way to blend the rustic charm of a cottage and mix it with present-day appeal, resulting in a timeless property.
Many of the houses in the Cottages on Green, Foley, also come furnished with high quality appliances and premium furniture. These items are set on various configurations. A number of these homes have embraced an open-concept kitchen. So, it’s easy to move around and make the area look bigger. But even without this set-up, the dwellings have anywhere between one to two floors with three to five bedrooms. And that’s enough space to host a large single-family unit.
Navigating the network of roads and cul-de-sacs will eventually lead homebuyers to a selection of custom properties designed by esteemed builders and designers, like Donald Powers Architects, Inc. and Union Studio Architecture & Community Design. These properties have been thoughtfully-constructed with gold-fortification and equipped with security systems. Picking the right house can also give the added bonus of a tank-less how water heater.
Another favorite feature that homebuyers can get are the front porches where neighbors usually stay to watch the sunset. This detail ties the private spaces back into a smooth transition with the community. Locals can share moments together without even leaving their homes. So, residents can have some afternoon tea and even watch the kids run around in the grass. This architectural detail helps families come together, too.
Outdoor Spaces and Surroundings
Cottages On The Greene, Foley, has a quaint allure and a strategic location. This subdivision offers a unique blend of serenity and accessibility.Itsdesirable features extend beyond the homes. Locals have a healthy set of options for places they can visit, including the following:
Scenic Boundaries: James Road meanders along the western frontier of the neighborhood, while County Road 12 South gracefully delineates the southern border, framing this picturesque community. You can take a walk along these areas or have a quick rest and soak the environment.
Gastronomic Delights: Just a short travel northward along James Road, you’ll reach food favorites like the Brick Oven. Delectable aromas and flavorful dishes await, tickling your taste buds while you munch.
Golfing Paradise: Golfers can get a quick game in at the nearby Gulf Links Golf Center. It’s a mere 1.8 miles west of the subdivision. Players can tee off against a backdrop of pristine fairways, perfecting their swing while enjoying the view.
RV Retreat: Embark on a southbound journey along Brinks Willis Road and James Road. Within minutes, you'll arrive at the Bella Terra RV Resort. Visitors can immerse in the beauty of nature while indulging in the included amenities, creating memories to last a lifetime.

Red Sox vs. Blue Jays - Game Recap - July 3, 2019

Red Sox vs. Blue Jays - Game Recap - July 3, 2019
TORONTO — After his latest rough start, struggling Boston ace Chris Sale said he’s never felt more frustrated by his performance.
Danny Jansen and Brandon Drury each hit two-run homers, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added a solo shot and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Sale and the Red Sox 6-3 on Wednesday night.
All three homers came off Sale (3-8), who lost for the first time in six starts. It’s the second time this season Sale has allowed three homers — he also did it in his opening day outing against Seattle on March 28.
“I’m supposed to be a big part of this team, a big part of this pitching staff, and I’ve probably been the biggest crutch,” Sale said. “I know who I am and who I’m supposed to be for this team and I haven’t been anything close. I’m 3-8, that’s absolutely embarrassing. On a team like this, they need me to be better and I haven’t been there for them.
“I’m standing before you as frustrated as I’ve ever been.”
Sale gave up five runs and a season-high nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. He also allowed five runs in his previous start, June 26 against the White Sox.
“It wasn’t good,” manager Alex Cora said. “Just a lot of pitches in the zone. I know he’s disappointed.”
Sale came in 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA in nine career games in Toronto, but couldn’t extend that streak of dominance. Instead, he allowed at least four earned runs for the third time in three meetings with the Blue Jays. He’s 0-2 with a 7.98 ERA against Toronto this season, and has allowed 23 hits to Blue Jays batters over 14 2/3 innings.
“I’m not locating fastballs, my changeup is terrible, breaking ball is hit or miss,” Sale said. “I just haven’t been myself for a while and that’s obviously frustrating. It’s the same thing over and over.”
Sale isn’t expected to pitch again until after the All-Star break, meaning he’ll get at least nine days off before facing the Dodgers at Fenway Park.
“Hopefully when he comes back we’ll get him back on track,” Cora said.
Drury went 3 for 4 and came within a triple of the cycle. He singled in the third and doubled in the eighth.
Blue Jays right-hander Jacob Waguespack (1-0) allowed three runs and five hits in five-plus innings for his first career win.
“That’s the second time I’ve seen him pitch in the big leagues and he’s been really good,” manager Charlie Montoyo said.
Waguespack was pressed into action after Wednesday’s original scheduled starter, right-hander Sean Reid-Foley, pitched 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief in Tuesday’s 10-6 loss. Instead, Toronto used right-hander David Phelps to open for Waguespack, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to make his second career appearance.
Rafael Devers hit a two-run single off Waguespack in the third, but Gurriel halved the deficit with a two-out homer in the bottom half, his 15th.
Christian Vazquez restored the two-run lead with a solo homer in the fourth, his 13th and third in the past three games.
Jansen tied it with a second-deck drive in the bottom half, his sixth of the year and fourth in six games.
Drury ended Sale’s night with a two-out homer in the sixth, his seventh and first since June 5.
Waguespack left after Vazquez singled to begin the seventh. Left-hander Tim Mayza followed and struck out Jackie Bradley Jr. before Chavis doubled. Right-hander Daniel Hudson came on to face pinch-hitter Eduardo Nunez, who flied out. Hudson ended the threat by striking out Mookie Betts.
Hudson worked the eighth and Ken Giles pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save in 14 opportunities.
Blue Jays shortstop Freddy Galvis went 3 for 3 with a walk, including a double on Sale’s first pitch of the game. Galvis padded Toronto’s lead with a sacrifice fly off Steven Wright in the eighth.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Blue Jays: RHP Marcus Stroman (pectoral cramp) may need an extra day of rest before his next start, or possibly a stint on the injured list. Stroman left Saturday’s start against Kansas City in the fifth inning. He’s listed as Toronto’s starter for Thursday’s series finale. … OF Teoscar Hernandez (right shoulder) sat for the second straight day.
SCORING STREAK
Toronto has scored five or more in five straight games and 13 of the past 14.
YOU’RE A STAR
Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts was one of three injury-replacements named to the AL All-Star team Wednesday. Bogaerts went 0 for 4 with four strikeouts.
NOT CROWDED
Attendance was 16,883, just 542 more than Toronto’s Triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons, drew for their 5-4 home win over Lehigh Valley.
ROSTER REPORT
Blue Jays: Reid-Foley was optioned to Buffalo to make room for Waguespack.
Red Sox: C Oscar Hernandez was assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
UP NEXT
Red Sox: RHP Hector Velazquez (1-3, 5.31) will make his eighth start of the season in Thursday’s series finale. Velazquez has also made 13 relief appearances.
Blue Jays: If Stroman can’t go Thursday, Toronto could promote LHP Thomas Pannone from Triple-A. Pannone has made 23 appearances for the Blue Jays this season, including two starts. He’s 2/3 with a 5.91 ERA.

Boston’s Beer Garden Boom Continues With the Return of Trillium on the Greenway
And other Boston-area beer and liquor news, updated weekly
As the Massachusetts beer scene continues its fast-paced growth, we’re tracking beer-related news bites right here: brewery openings and closures, links to interesting features from other publications, and more. We’re throwing in some liquor news for good measure, too. This piece is updated most Thursdays, and the most recent additions are at the top. Email [email protected] with any Massachusetts beer or liquor news that should be on our radar.
Check out our 2017 archive of beer news here, and for a more in-depth look at the scene, check out the archive of our Beer & Mortar feature series.
May 10, 2018
BOSTON — The rumors are true:Last year’s popular Trillium Garden on the Greenway is indeed coming back this year. Per an announcement from Trillium and the Greenway Conservancy, the beer garden will open later this month at High Street across from Rowes Wharf and remain open through the end of October, weather permitting, operating Wednesday through Sunday with draft beer from Trillium and wine from Westport Rivers Vineyards. Keep an eye on Twitter for updates and an official opening date.
CAMBRIDGE — Tickets are now on sale for the seventh annual Hyper-Local Craft Brewfest by the Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts, an event jam-packed with beverage tastings, homebrewing demos and lectures, entertainment, and food. This year, it’s on Saturday, June 16, at University Park, with an afternoon session and an evening session. Tickets start at $40 and are available online, and admission includes unlimited tastings of local beers, ciders, meads, and other beverages, as well as some local food samples. (There will also be larger servings of food available for purchase.)
SOMERVILLE — Somerville’s annual decentralized outdoor music festival, Porchfest, returns this Sunday, May 13 (not Saturday — it’s officially been moved to the rain date), bringing music to a porch near you (or, more likely, many porches near you). Two Somerville breweries, Aeronaut (14 Tyler St.) and Winter Hill(328 Broadway), have collaborated on Porchbeer 2018, aimed at supporting music education by donating 100% of profits to School of Honk. According to a statement from Winter Hill Brewing, it’s a “true Somerville session” that is “both a collaboration and a hybrid beer — using two different ale yeasts…and two Southern Hemisphere hops.” Expect a flavor of “light stone fruits, pineapple, citrus, and herbal notes” with low bitterness and a 5.2% ABV, “nearly perfect for tossing back a few on the porch while the band plays on!” (The breweries would like to remind you to drink responsibly and obey open container laws.) Here’s the info on how to pre-reserve a four-pack or a case, and on Porchfest day, the cans will be available at both taprooms (and on draft, in limited amounts) — and there’ll also be cans on select porches.

Slumbrew’s Assembly Row beer garden is back
BOSTON — Have you heard about Night Shift Brewing’s forthcoming expansion to Boston proper? In case you missed it, here are some pertinent details. Long story short, it’s going to be awesome. And there’ll be food and coffee, along with beers exclusive to that location.
FRAMINGHAM — The seemingly ever-growing Jack’s Abby is getting an award for, well, growing. The U.S. Small Business Association has named the brewery the Massachusetts Manufacturer of the Year, citing its production growth from 18,000 to 43,000 barrels from 2015 to 2017, as well as the addition of over 100 local employees during that time period. Jack’s Abby also added a second brand, Springdale Beer, last year, with a taproom next door, and Springdale began distribution this year. The SBA will give co-owners and brothers Jack, Eric, and Sam Hendler their award at a ceremony in Needham tomorrow.
PEABODY — The North Shore beer scene continues to grow. With Granite Coast Brewing Co. on deck for a late August opening in Peabody, another three breweries are also potentially in the works there — Essex County Brewery and two others that have not yet been formally announced.
SOMERVILLE — As of yesterday, Somerville Brewing Company, aka Slumbrew, has temporarily revived its Assembly Row beer garden that closed in fall 2017 (301 Canal St.). As noted below, it got a reprieve for another summer because the construction set to overtake its site has been delayed. The brewery also has an indoor facility at Assembly Row, American Fresh Brewhouseat 490 Foley St., not to mention its original brewery and taproom at 15 Ward St. outside of Somerville’s Union Square. The newly reopened Assembly beer garden is dog-friendly, up to three or sometimes five dogs at a time, depending on chillness.

Aeronaut Brewing Company/Facebook
Aeronaut’s Allston pop-up will return for a third summer
ALLSTON, BOSTON — Aeronaut will once again host a pop-up beer garden in Allston this summer at Zone 3 on Western Avenue. Expect live music, plenty of beer, and a family-friendly, dog-friendly vibe every Wednesday and Friday evening from June through September. (The Somerville brewery is also reportedly considering a bike-friendly summer pop-up elsewhere in the Boston area this summer; stay tuned.)
BEER STORES EVERYWHERE — For the Boston Globe Magazine, Devra First writes “an open letter to men who sell beer, from a woman who drinks it,” asking those who sell beer to realize that a customer’s gender doesn’t indicate anything definitive about that customer’s beer knowledge, likes, or dislikes. In other words, don’t assume that women shopping for beer only want fruit beer or cider recommendations.
CAMBRIDGEPORT, CAMBRIDGE — Starting May 6, the Central Flea market will be back up and running on Sundays, this time at University Park near Massachusetts Avenue. Cambridge’s Lamplighter Brewing Co. will run an eight-tap beer garden there (and there will also be food trucks around) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each week, weather permitting. Aside from a variety of Lamplighter styles, the brewery also wants to serve a local cider. The space will fit about 100 people, and there will be some long tables and benches, standing tables, and plenty of open grassy space.
DOWNTOWN BOSTON — More outdoor drinking? More outdoor drinking. The next installment of seasonal outdoor extravaganza Boston Seasons, this one dubbed the Patios and running through spring and summer, will debut at City Hall Plaza on May 4, featuring a Wachusett Brewing Company beer garden (as well as Cambridge’s Honeycomb Creamery, serving ice cream). The beer garden will be pouring pints (of Wachusett as well as some guest brewers) starting at 4 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on weekends. Keep an eye out for pop-ups and activities throughout the season, including puppy visits, Boston Public Market picnic events, mini golf, and more.
Also downtown, the aforementioned planned “Dewey Square Drinkery” pop-up bar proposed by the Greenway Conservancy now has a vendor attached: Downeast Cider, as Boston Magazine reports. Pending permitting, the Downeast Back Porch on the Greenway, as it’ll be called, will be steps from South Station, serving five ciders on draft, including a new mint lemonade flavor that’ll be exclusive to this pop-up. Also on the menu: wines from Half Bottle Cans and a rotating local beer. The Back Porch will be open from late May through October on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings, as well as on the weekends. As usual, there will be food trucks in the area. Expect lawn games, live music, and other attractions.
Also also downtown, and also by the Greenway Conservancy, the seasonal beer garden near Rowes Wharf will probably come back again this summer — stay tuned for an announcement soon — and signs point to Trillium reprising its role there.
ROXBURY — The opening of the Backlash Beer brewery and taproom in Roxbury is so close; it could debut in mid-May. The brewery will go into its final inspections in the coming weeks.

Part of Underground at Ink Block, which could soon be home to a Castle Island Brewing seasonal beer garden
ALLSTON, BOSTON AND BEVERLY — Heading to a Boston Cannons lacrosse game at Harvard Stadium or Endicott College this season? The team will be running a craft beer garden for the home games at both stadiums this year, featuring Bent Water Brewing Company, True North Ales, Jack’s Abby, and Castle Island Brewing Company, with Bent Water and Castle Island also brewing exclusive Cannons-themed beers for the occasion.
CINCINNATI — With Boston Beer Company busy breaking in its relatively new taproom at its Jamaica Plain facility and planning to expand to Downtown Boston, it’s also busy out of state: It’ll open a 9,000-square-foot taproom across the street from its existing Cincinnati, Ohio brewing space, which it has owned since 1997.
EVERYWHERE — Salem’sNotch Brewing has teamed up with the Trustees, the non-profit conservation group that oversees more than 46,000 acres of Massachusetts land (over 25,000 of those acres are publicly accessible) — from parks and gardens to hiking trails and lighthouses. This partnership will allow Notch to pop up at a variety of Trustees sites with a mobile beer garden. Most events will be free, and many will include live music and other family-friendly activities to be enjoyed while the adults drink Notch’s low-ABV ales and lagers. Keep an eye on the event calendar here.
IPSWICH — Haven’t yet made it to the new tasting room at Privateer Rum (11 Brady Dr.)? Northshore Magazine features a nice peek inside the attractive space; take a look, and then go taste rum at the boat-shaped bar.
SOUTH END, BOSTON — Castle Island Brewing, which has a taproom in Norwood, plans to open a seasonal beer garden in Boston’s South End at Underground at Ink Block (90 Traveler St.), pending city approval. The art-covered park debuted last year under I-93, and Castle Island Brewing’s 5,000-square-foot beer garden (“Castle Island at Underground”), if approved, will open there on May 11 and last through mid-October, operating from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. There will be about eight different beer styles available each day, as well as a couple wines. Thanks to some new equipment in Norwood, Castle Island has been able to increase production and play around with some new small-batch experiments, which will make appearances Underground. The spacious beer garden will fit around 400 people, and there will be lawn games and probably food trucks and other vendors onsite. The beer garden is slated to appear seasonally for at least five years.

Down the Road Beer Co./Facebook
Down the Road Beer Co.’s Goopmassta Session IPA, which the state wouldn’t allow to be infused with CBD
ASHLAND — Medfield-based, athlete-founded Zelus Beer Company — which produces “hydration-friendly” beers that are “crafted for your active lifestyle,” with low alcohol content — will open a pop-up taproom and beer garden at the Corner Spot in Ashland (6 Cherry St.) from April 13 to April 26, offering tasters, pints, and merch. There will also be a food truck onsite, as well as music and other events. Keep an eye on the Zelus website for scheduling information and updates.
EVERETT — With retail cannabis sales set to begin on July 1, one local brewery was hoping to be the first in the state to infuse beer with CBD, an active compound in cannabis that is thought to have some potential medical benefits without the psychoactive effects caused by another well-known cannabis compound, THC. Down the Road Beer Co. (199 Ashland St.) hoped to add CBD to its newly released Goopmassta Session IPA, but the state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission said no: “Infusing or otherwise adding cannabinoid extract in alcoholic beverages is considered adulteration of alcohol,” which is a no-no. (Industrial hemp, however, is allowed in the manufacture of alcohol in Massachusetts under certain conditions.) Want to try CBD-infused beer? Head to Vermont and seek out Long Trail Brewing’s Medicator. In Oregon, Coalition Brewing is also making a CBD-infused beer, Two Flowers IPA.
HARVARD — Carlson Orchards (115 Oak Hill Rd.), which has been producing non-alcoholic apple cider for decades, is getting into the hard cider game, the company announced this week, thanks in part to some consultation with the Stormalong Cider team — neighbors at New England Apple Products in Leominster, where Carlson Orchards’ non-alcoholic cider is produced. “We wanted to produce a hard cider that was similar to our premium farmstand cider and ultimately decided to make an ‘unfiltered’ hard cider for increased apple taste and character,” said Carlson Orchards president Frank Carlson, via press release. The first off-site release will be 16-ounce cans of Oak Hill Blend, distributed around the state via the Massachusetts Beverage Alliance, available starting April 1. Stay tuned for a potential fall 2018 opening of a tasting room onsite at Carlson Orchards.
MASHPEE — Today, March 29, is opening day for Cape Cod’s Naukabout Brewery & Taproom (13 Lake Ave.), a seven-barrel brewhouse with lake and river views. It’s open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Friday and Saturday (closed on Sunday). The opening lineup of beers includes Quittin’ Time, a “juicy” and “tropical” New England IPA; the triple dry-hopped Tides double IPA; a 3.5%-er, Stormborn Stout; and more.
SOUTH DEERFIELD — Berkshire Brewing Company (12 Railroad St.), which has been around since 1994, could soon open an 850-square-foot taproom that’ll operate a few days a week, with 20 taps, pretzels from Baked in Shelburne Falls, and food trucks outside on summer weekends. (Customers will also be able to bring in their own food.) There will be room for about 55 people inside. Why now? A recent amendment to a state law is now making it possible for the brewery — which has a pub-brewer wholesale license — to move from only offering free samples during tours to actually selling poured beer (but not packaged beer) onsite.
SOUTH END, BOSTON — Heading to the SoWa Open Market to shop and eat? It takes place on Sundays from May 6 to October 28, from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and starting at 11 a.m. each week, you can drink some beer, too. The Power Station (540 Harrison Ave.) will become the Beer Barn, courtesy of Craft Collective, serving up a rotating selection of beers and ciders. There’ll also be lawn games, live music, and more.
March 22, 2018
Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company/Facebook
Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company
FALL RIVER — Canned Heat Craft Beer Company (52 Ferry St.) could open as soon as early May; the team plans to can (of course) and distribute the beer, and there will also be tasting hours at the space, which will include cold food and a patio. Canned Heat has been previewing some potential beers on Facebook, including Limesicle, a milkshake IPA made with lime peel and vanilla bean; Aloha Brown, an English-style brown that will be aged on toasted coconut; and a Portuguese-inspired pilsner.
HAMPTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE — Smuttynose Brewing Company (105 Towle Farm Rd.) has been sold for an undisclosed amount to Runnymede Investments, a venture capital and investment firm based in North Hampton, New Hampshire, that intends to help the brand “not only survive, but…thrive.” Former Boston Beer Company executive Rich Lindsay, who was briefly CFO for Night Shift Brewing, will be CEO.
MARLBOROUGH — Walden Woods Brewing(277 Main St.) is so, so close to opening. It was supposed to happen this past weekend, but there were some delays. Look for it within the next few weeks.
ROSLINDALE — Alas, the season is about to end for Trillium’s temporary beer hall at the Roslindale Substation (4228 Washington St.). This Sunday will be the final day; check out some details for the last few events here.
SPRINGFIELD — In a Mass. Brew Bros. blind, bracket-style tasting of 20 Massachusetts New England IPAs, the victor was a nanobrewery in planning, Rustic Brewing Company, with a brew called Hop Blind. Lots of more established breweries were included, such as Trillium, Idle Hands, Tree House, and Lord Hobo. Western Mass. apparently has a lot to look forward to when Rustic opens, focusing on New England IPAs and milkshake IPAs.
WALTHAM — Contract brand Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. will get its own permanent home later this year, likely around fall — a 23,000-square-foot brewery and taproom right by Beaver Brook Reservation (411 Waverley Oaks Rd.). The large space will include a second taproom for overflow and private events, two patios, and a 30-barrel system, as well as an additional five-barrel pilot system for experimentation. The brand launched a few years back with the aim of producing protein-packed post-workout beers, but these days, Mighty Squirrel has moved away from those recipes, instead producing beers such as the hazy Cloud Candy IPA, Mocha Stout milk stout, and Kiwi White Belgian white ale.
WORCESTER — Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company(55 Millbrook St.), which focuses on imperial ales and lagers between 8% and 14% ABV (hence the name), has debuted its 100-person taproom; here’s the schedule for the first couple of weeks. Greater Good’s kitchen, dubbed Toast (stylized “TOAST.”), is serving up five types of grilled cheese, plus soft pretzels, hot dogs, and other snacks.
March 15, 2018
Trillium/Facebook
Trillium’s original Fort Point location
DOWNTOWN BOSTON — At the Royale over the weekend, a number of local bartenders took part in the annual Speed Rack competition, a speed bartending competition by and for women that raises money for breast cancer charities (and visibility for women in the bartending industry). This year, Tainah Soares (of A4cade in Cambridge) was crowned Miss Speed Rack New England, and she’ll go on to compete at the national finals in May, taking place in Chicago.
DOWNTOWN CROSSING, BOSTON — Democracy Brewing(35 Temple St.) — one of several exciting Boston-area brewery openings potentially slated for spring 2018 — is three months into construction and shared some renderings of what it’ll look like when it’s complete. Democracy Brewing is located in the longtime Windsor Button space.
FORT POINT, BOSTON — Trillium Brewing Company’s forthcoming Fort Point location at 47 Farnsworth St. — a move from its original spot in the neighborhood (369 Congress St.) that will result in a much larger and more awesome space — is moving along. BLDUP has a March construction update on the 16,000-square-foot project, noting that a permit has been submitted for restaurant occupancy. The two-story space, which could open by the end of the year, will include a brewpub with a full kitchen and microbrewery, bar on each floor, a room for private events, a retail shop, and two outdoor patios — one of which will be on the roof.
ROSLINDALE, BOSTON — Distraction Brewing Company (2 Belgrade Ave.) has now secured its Massachusetts farmer-brewery license, which lets it produce beer. Still in the works: a pouring license, zoning, and building the taproom.
WEYMOUTH — In addition to Barrel House Z (95 Woodrock Rd.), which opened a year and a half ago, and the forthcoming Article Fifteen (835 Washington St.) (see February 8 update below), Weymouth has even more beer on the way. Vitamin Sea Brewing has signed a lease near Barrel House Z and could open a 10-barrel brewery and taproom by the end of 2018, featuring a patio and rotating food trucks.
March 1, 2018
Greater Good/Facebook
Growlers at Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company, opening soon in Worcester
BOSTON — Prepare for beer gardens. Once the season arrives, Trillium’s popular Greenway garden will likely make a comeback this year, as the Herald reports, and that’s not all: The Greenway Conservancy is trying to find a brewery for “Dewey Square Drinkery,” a pop-up bar that would be open at least a couple days a week in Dewey Square. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, catch Trillium’s other seasonal beer garden — an indoor one — at the Roslindale Substation (4228 Washington St.)
CAMBRIDGE TO MEXICO CITY — Moe Isaza, bar manager atPammy’s(928 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge), is currently competing for his third time in the annual Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition, and he’s already made it quite far — he’ll be one of just two United States finalists competing globally in Mexico City against about 30 international bartenders on April 25. The US finalists were pulled from a field of 720 recipes submissions, narrowed down through several stages of judging and competition. Isaza’s drink is called the Poderoso and includes Bacardi Ocho, coffee liqueur (paying homage to Colombia, where Isaza was born before coming to East Boston as a four-year-old), pineapple juice, amaro, and a muddled lemon wedge.
EVERETT TO PAWTUCKET AND BEYOND — Night Shift Brewing (87 Santilli Hwy., Everett) is outgrowing its home and is now doing some contract brewing out of the Isle Brewers Guild cooperative in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, adding about 10,000 barrels a year to Night Shift’s output. And it’s the Everett brewery’s first foray into Rhode Island; it doesn’t yet distribute there, but its beers made at Isle Brewers Guild will be on tap and in cans at the Guild taproom.
In other Night Shift news, Braintree’s Widowmaker Brewing(220 Wood Rd.) has signed on with Night Shift Distributing (Night Shift Brewing’s sibling distribution arm) to take things to the next level (previously self-distributing to around 30 nearby accounts), hoping to spread around the whole Greater Boston area, not just the South Shore. Keep an eye out for Widowmaker’s Ecstasy of Gold American IPA and 50 Year Storm Double IPA around town, likely followed soon by the Donut Shop Stout.
And in other Night Shift news, Night Shift Distributing recently brought its first gluten-free brewery into its portfolio, Ghostfish Brewing out of Seattle. Four-packs began to hit Massachusetts shelves a couple weeks ago; look for Ghostfish’s Grapefruit IPA, Meteor Shower Blonde Ale, and Shrouded Summit Belgian White Ale.
IPSWICH — Privateer Rum (11 Brady Dr.) announced today that Maggie Campbell — head distiller since 2012, vice president since 2015 — has risen through the ranks again. She’s now president of the company, working alongside founder and CEO Andrew Cabot to further grow the seven-year-old brand, including doubling Privateer’s production capacity this year. (Privateer also recently debuted a new tasting room at the distillery.) Campbell is a familiar and distinguished face in the distilling world (and wine world, too), appearing on a number of boards and committees, as well as winning plenty of awards and recognition for her work at Privateer.
MALDEN — In case you missed yesterday’s news, Malden is getting lots more beer.
WORCESTER — Here’s a sneak peek inside Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company(55 Millbrook St.), set to open later this month with a focus on hefty imperial brews. The 100-person taproom will also have live music, games, and some food, such as panini and pretzels.
February 23, 2018
American Fresh/Facebook
American Fresh Assembly Row patio
SOMERVILLE — Somerville Brewing Company, aka Slumbrew, will be temporarily bringing back its outdoor beer garden at Assembly Row. “We’ll be back this summer with outdoor drinking and dining right at Assembly Row,” said cofounder Caitlin Jewell in a Facebook live video today. “We have bands and bocce and fun.” The beer garden, which was open in warmer seasons and covered up by a tent in colder seasons, was around for nearly three years before shutting down in fall 2017. A couple months later, Somerville Brewing Company opened up a full-service restaurant and bar, American Fresh Brewhouse, just down the block at 490 Foley St. in Assembly Row. Plus, there’s also the original Somerville Brewing location, a brewery and taproom in Somerville’s Boynton Yards neighborhood, right by Union Square (15 Ward St.)
In a Facebook thread, Jewell mentioned that this time around the beer garden will have “no tent, just fresh air.” She also noted that the “current plan” is that it’s just coming back for this upcoming warm season; the land is still slated to be built upon — part of Assembly Row’s seemingly never-ending development — but plans got delayed by a year.
Another beer update elsewhere in Somerville: On March 3, Winter Hill Brewing Co.(328 Broadway, Winter Hill, Somerville)will introduce its new milk stout, Large Iced Regular. The name — and the winter release date — is an homage to New Englanders’ year-round iced coffee obsession, and the stout is infused with Counter Culture Hologram coffee. In honor of the release, the brewery will be serving a special Union Square Donuts doughnut on March 3, while supplies last; the doughnut glaze is made using the beer.

Pretty Things’ Fluffy White Rabbits
BOSTON — Boston Beer Co., which is behind Samuel Adams beer as well as Angry Orchard hard cider, Twisted Tea, and other alcoholic beverages, has a new president: Dave Burwick, who will leave his position of CEO of Peet’s Coffee for the job. He’s also been a member of Boston Beer Co.’s board of directors for over a decade. Burwick succeeds longtime president and CEO Martin Roper. Meanwhile, Boston Beer Co. founder and chairman Jim Koch will continue to hold those positions.
EVERYWHERE — In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, female brewers nationwide — including plenty in Massachusetts — will be brewing beers made with a special Pink Boots blend of hops, named for the Pink Boots organization, which supports women in beer-related careers. (Sales of the hops go to the organization.) Keep an eye out for all the Pink Boots beers appearing at breweries around town later this year.
THE UK — At last, the news that Pretty Things’ rabid Boston fanbase has been waiting for! Well, not exactly. Pretty Things founders Dann and Martha Holley-Paquette have a new brewery project in the works, but it’s all the way overseas in Sheffield, England. The popular Somerville-based Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project ended in late 2015 after a seven-year run; the website, which is still live, describes it as “now an ex-project.”
“We always intended to end it on our terms, and we are happy to have done so,” the duo wrote on their website. “That’s why it was a project!”
The new project will be a microbrewery on the site of the Old Dairy, which, as its name suggests, was once a milk and cheese processing plant. The Holley-Paquettes will reportedly “produce craft beer in bottles and kegs for sale to wholesale customers.”

Trillium Brewing Company [official photo]
BOSTON / CANTON — No, a Trillium Brewing Company (369 Congress St., Boston; 110 Shawmut Rd., Canton)truck didn’t get “Storrowed” — that was just a fun bit of Photoshop in order to promote the brewery’s new release, a double IPA called Storrowed. The company describes it as having a “dank nose of sweaty pineapple, mangosteen, and stone fruit [and] intensely juicy flavors of overripe mango, pear flesh, notes of grapefruit pith, and a background hit of raw sugar.” For those who don’t understand the term “Storrowed,” just heed the road signs that prohibit trucks from driving on Storrow Drive. Don’t be that truck that gets stuck at the overpass. You will get stuck.
CAMBRIDGE — Lamplighter Brewing Company (284 Broadway) officially debuts its new back taproom today, February 9, doubling the brewery’s capacity and allowing it to host more private and public events. And it’s got a really great mural.
HAMPTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE — Smuttynose Brewing Company (105 Towle Farm Rd.), which has been a big name in New England’s craft beer world for more than two decades, is for sale. In a note shared by owners Peter Egelston and Joanne Francis on social media and the Smuttynose website, the duo writes: “At this time, in order for our company to continue on the path we embarked on back in 1994, Smuttynose needs someone who can provide financial resources that will move the company forward…We’re strongly committed to making sure this transition is as smooth as possible, and to help the company’s new owner or partner embark on a successful next chapter for Smuttynose and its wonderful staff. We want to emphasize Smuttynose Brewing company is open, brewing our fine beers daily and serving delicious food at Hayseed Restaurant. Many of you have asked how you can help…keep drinking Smuttynose brews and send your rich aunt or uncle our way!”
ROSLINDALE — Distraction Brewing Company (2 Belgrade Ave.) is a big step closer to opening; the brewery has secured its TTB license, meaning that the federal government recognizes it as a brewery. “In other words, we’re one step closer to transforming this raw, beautiful space into a place where our fellow Rozzidents can kick back and enjoy our beer,” the brewery wrote on Facebook late last month. “Still plenty of work to do. But we can’t wait to get our hands dirty.”
WEYMOUTH — There’s a Kickstarter campaign underway to help fund the building of an “epic taproom” for Article Fifteen Brewing (835 Washington St.), a “veteran-owned nano-brewery” that is currently in the buildout phase. The campaign ends in 10 days, and there’s about $4000 left to raise by then. The team has a lease, brewing equipment, and funds to help with the buildout but is seeking a little bit of help to get to the next step of the process. When Article Fifteen opens, it’ll serve beer “inspired by a love of hops and a proud tradition of military, fire, and medical service.”
WORCESTER — Founded in 2014, 3cross Brewing Company (4 Knowlton Ave.) made a change recently: It’s now 3cross Fermentation Cooperative. As the name suggests, it’s now a coop, owned by workers and customers (the first community-owned brewery in the state), and it’s expanding its focus beyond beer to other fermented products.

watcheswatchesswiss Mechanical movement replica watches This Faux Movie Trailer Captures All The Horror Of Client Deadlines by Richard Whitman , August 24, 2014, 6:26 PM Recommend (4) Comment (2) This is, by far, the best representation of the emotional state one finds oneself in when client deadlines approach. watches Staffers at Greek agency Admine took it upon themselves to leverage the horror movie trailer approach to representing the horrific intensity of looming client deadlines. best replica watches The trailer delivers everything you’d expect and will very quickly bring you back to that specific moment when you were in the midst of a pressing client deadline and every piece of shit was hitting the fan. watches And speaking of shit, the trailer points to a Web site on which fake reviews — such as this one from The New York Times — proclaim: “Scariest shit ever.” You’ve all heard this argument before. best replica watches site At least I hope you have. replica watches It’s no secret that it helps agency folks to think like a marketing director. best swiss replica watches Why? Because that style of thinking lends itself to a broader, more holistic viewpoint — and one that offers insight far beyond just that of the next ad campaign. Writing in Entrepreneur , Grow Co-Founders Gabrey Means and Cassie Hughes argue that agency people should be nosy both into your client’s business and into what other agencies are doing. Also, you should “surrender the square peg” — meaning that your agency will not always have the best solution or even be the right company for a given project at a given time. And lastly, it is advised that you “sing kumbaya” — meaning, basically, that every company working for a single brand should be one big, happy family. And to do that, there must be communication between all partners, even if they see each other as competitors. After feeling the brunt of ageism and getting the boot from the world’s biggest Millennial playground otherwise known as BuzzFeed, it’s nice to see Mark Duffy (aka Copyranter) expressing his opinions again. Writing for Jezebel , Mark unleashes a torrent of criticism on the latest slew of swagger dads — which, apparently, is supposed to be some kind of make good for all those years the industry painted men as clueless, blithering idiots. Trouble is, this “dadvertising” effort, kicked off several years ago most notably with the Toyota Swagger Wagon ad, is portraying dads just as idiotically as when they were portrayed as clownish buffoons. Now they’re just backed by rap music and hashtags. Is this really progress? So by now you’ve all heard of Snapchat, right? And you’re all racing to get your clients in on this shiny new marketing object of the month, right? After all, it’s new, it’s cool and all the kids are doing it. Which, of course, means every single agency has to get in on the action. But as Traction CEO Adam Kleinberg writes in Advertising Age, you should, perhaps, snap out of it. He argues agencies will want to consider the kind of company they will keep if they choose to advertise on Snapchat. He writes, “I conducted an experiment and changed my settings to allow anyone to send me snaps on Snapchat. Sure enough, the ads started rolling in. An ad for a fake Rolex was the tamest of the bunch. Ads for penis enlargement pills and ‘fine big booty girls’ were gems.” So think twice before you jump on that shiny object train. 4 SHARES Tags: advertiser-agency relationship , advertising , agency Recommend (4) Print RSS 2 comments about “This Faux Movie Trailer Captures All The Horror Of Client Deadlines”. In Washington, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the threat from Islamic State was "beyond anything we've seen" and the U.S. Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into the death of Foley on the video, which featured a masked man speaking English with a British accent. As Western officials tried to identify the man, the Muslim Council of Britain denounced Foley's "abhorrent murder" and one of its advisers urged anyone who knows the killer's identity to contact the police. Horror at the video spanned from the West to Baghdad, where Iraqis asked why the United States and its allies had not cracked down on Islamic State fighters long before they captured large areas of Syria and Iraq. Foley, 40, was beheaded by an Islamic State militant in the video that surfaced on the Internet on Tuesday, and officials in Washington revealed that U.S. special forces had tried unsuccessfully to rescue him along with other American hostages earlier this summer. A firefight between the U.S. forces and Islamic State militants during the rescue attempt appeared to be the first direct ground engagement between the two sides. The video caused particular shock in Britain, which is home to about 2.7 million Muslims, although the hundreds of British men fighting alongside the militants in Iraq and Syria have created concern for some time. Iqbal Sacranie, an adviser to the Muslim Council of Britain, said Britons from across the country's communities had to stop young men being seduced by radical ideologies. "This sub culture of this 'jihadi-cool' – as they call it in the media – within the margins of society … that is the real challenge," he told BBC Radio. "This is a problem that affects all of us and it will only be dealt with more effectively if all of us are working together on this." Sacranie said the Muslim community was pushing the message that "this is totally alien to Islam" and families were reporting to the authorities when they discovered their sons had headed to the Middle East to fight. He also told London's Evening Standard newspaper that anyone who recognised the man in the video had a duty to contact police. JOHN, PAUL AND RINGO The Guardian newspaper said a former hostage had identified the masked man as the leader of three Britons who guarded foreign hostages in the city of Raqqa – Islamic State's stronghold in eastern Syria. The BBC also reported that hostages had nicknamed their three captors John, Paul and Ringo, after members of the Beatles pop group. Ghaffar Hussain, managing director of the counter-extremism Quilliam Foundation, said it was almost inevitable that men who had fought in Syria would return to plan attacks in Europe. "It is disturbing that people born and raised in Britain and who have gone to the same schools as us could have been essentially indoctrinated to the extent where they can justify raping women and chopping heads off," he said. Four British Islamists – two of whom had been to al Qaeda training camps in Pakistan – killed 52 people in suicide bomb attacks on London in July 2005, and Britons have previously appeared in graphic Islamist videos. Until recently, Islamic State concentrated on establishing its self-proclaimed caliphate in areas of Syria and Iraq it had seized rather than on attacking the West, like al Qaeda – the group from which it split. But U.S. President Barack Obama's decision to order air strikes on its fighters in Iraq appears to have changed this. The beheading video also showed images of another U.S. journalist, Steven Sotloff, whose fate the group said depends on how the United States acts in Iraq. "The life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision," the masked man says. In a Washington briefing on Thursday, Hagel said Islamic State was as sophisticated as any group the United States had seen and posed an imminent threat "to every interest we have, whether it's in Iraq or anywhere else." "They are beyond just a terrorist group. They marry ideology, a sophistication of … military prowess," Hagel said. "They are tremendously well-funded. This is beyond anything we've seen." General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, suggested Islamic State would be a danger until it could no longer count on safe havens in Syria. "This is an organization that has an apocalyptic, end-of- days strategic vision and which will eventually have to be defeated," Dempsey said. "To your question, can they be defeated without addressing that part of their organization which resides in Syria? The answer is no. That will have to be addressed on both sides of what is essentially at this point a non-existent border." In Baghdad, Iraqis expressed their horror at the video of Foley's killing and questioned Western strategy on Islamic State, which advanced out of Syria in June to capture several major Iraqi cities, including Mosul, before the United States intervened militarily. "The killing is the crime of all crimes, whoever the victim is," said Kareem Jamal, 55, an Arabic language teacher at a secondary school. "I wish the world superpowers had fought these criminal groups in their incubators. The U.S. should have hit Islamic State when they first appeared in Syria. Why didn't they hit them when they first entered Mosul and other cities?" Ali Mohammed Saeed, a 35-year-old doctor, called for deeper Western involvement, almost three years after U.S. troops pulled out of Iraq. "Air strikes are not enough, those criminals need ground troops to kill them and kick them out." British Prime Minister David Cameron has ruled out sending troops to step up Britain's military involvement in Iraq, which has so far been focused on delivering supplies to Kurdish forces fighting Islamic State and using jets to conduct surveillance. Vintage Wine Scammer Kurniawan Sentenced to 10 Years Jail By Patricia Hurtado 2014-08-07T21:13:53Z – Comments Email Print Speed Share Facebook Twitter Google+ LinkedIn Email Print Save watches Rudy Kurniawan, who swindled wealthy wine collectors including billionaire William Koch by selling them more than $20.7 million in fake French vintages created in his home kitchen, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. omega watches U.S. District Judge Richard Berman in Manhattan imposed the sentence today, saying Kurniawan, 37, failed to accept responsibility from his crimes. Berman ordered Kurniawan to forfeit $20 million — including real estate, art, jewelry and wine — and to pay an additional $28.4 million to those who’d purchased purportedly rare French wines he concocted and bottled at home. replica cartier watches Kurniawan’s scheme was “a bold, grandiose, unscrupulous but destined-to-fail con,” Berman said. “The public at large needs to know that our food and drink are safe and that what’s on the label and is not some potentially unsafe, homemade witches brew.” watches Jurors convicted Kurniawan in December of mail and wire fraud. Prosecutors urged that he be jailed for 14 years for cheating collectors, auction houses and others from 2004 to 2012. Agents searched Kurniawan’s home after his arrest and found a laboratory for creating fake wines that included corks, bottles and printers to fabricate labels, prosecutors said. replica Longines watches Kurniawan operated in assembly-line fashion from his home in the Los Angeles suburb of Arcadia and was “the kingpin of counterfeiters,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Stanley Okula said. “At the end of the day, the defendant carried out a grand con and he should be punished.” Ailing Mother replica patek watches Kurniawan apologized to the court and asked to be allowed to go home to California to care for his ailing mother. “I am really sorry,” he said. Kurniawan’s lawyer, Jerome Mooney, sought a sentence of 2 1/4 years, representing the time Kurniawan has served in U.S. custody since his 2012 arrest. Kurniawan is the first person in the U.S. to be prosecuted for selling fake wines and his crime should be viewed in perspective, Mooney said. “Nobody died here,” Mooney said. “Nobody lost their savings, nobody lost their job, nobody was rendered devoid of the things they needed for their life.” Prosecutors last month said investor losses totaled more than $30.5 million. Among the victims was Andrew Hobson, chief financial officer of Univision Communications Inc., who paid about $3.1 million for bottles that were almost all fake or couldn’t be authenticated, prosecutors said. Aston Martin Another victim was David Doyle, co-founder of Quest Software Inc. and owner of the Rockpool Bar and Grill in Sydney. Doyle paid $15.1 million and transfered an Aston Martin vehicle for purported wines that included a 1947 Chateau Cheval Blanc, prosecutors said. At least 1,590 bottles — worth more than $19 million if genuine — were fakes, Doyle’s estate manager said in a memo to the judge, citing a wine authenticator. George Stamboulidis, Doyle’s lawyer, said after court that this “first-of-its-kind criminal prosecution” signals “federal law enforcement’s resolve to pursue wine counterfeiters.” Koch was among the first wine collectors to publicly declare he’d been swindled by Kurniawan. He testified during the trial that he lost about $2.1 million on purchases of about 219 bottles that purported to be Chateau Petrus and Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. Future Auctions Koch, the brother of billionaire energy executives Charles and David Koch , has waged a legal fight against counterfeiting and hired more than a half dozen experts to find fakes in his 43,000-bottle cellar, he said. Last month, he settled a civil lawsuit against Kurniawan, Mooney said. Kurniawan’s fakes have infiltrated the wine market and may be sold at auctions for decades to come, prosecutors said. The government has won Berman’s approval to seize all Kurniawan’s property, including art by Damien Hirst and Donald Judd , luxury watches worth more than $550,000 and a $33,6000 south sea pearl necklace. The trial included testimony from three French winemakers who traveled to the U.S. to testify for prosecutors. The case is U.S. v. Today we’re unboxing Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD iPod/iPhone Control Headphones with Built-In Mic, in light blue. This is my second set of Beats headphones. I use my Studios for at home and wanted a pair that were smaller specifically for at the gym. These on-ear headphones are lightweight, compact and offers high definition sound. They also come with an inline microphone and remote which is compatible with iPhone, iPad, etc, allowing you to answer your calls or control your music / volume, etc. The headphones fold up nicely and have a good quality feel about them, including the extremely soft to touch feeling of the headband and ear cups. They come with a soft carrying pouch perfect for keeping them safe in my gym bag. A great feature of the Solo HD vs. my Studios, is that they don’t require batteries. My one critisim with both the Solo’s and the Studio’s is the fact that they leak sound. Whatever you listen to, you can be sure that everyone around you can hear it also. So word of advice, don’t be THAT guy on the bus… you know the one. Otherwise, if you can get these headphones on sale, and looking for a decent pair of headphones that will give you good sound, the Solo’s fit the bill. Thanks for watching.
