She likes fish, napping in the sun and occasionally being annoying when she wants something. She also purrs like a cat when someone pets her but she’s very ashamed by this and doesn’t like when someone notices it.

Homeless Chloe AU Draft

Version 1 - 01/2025

Chloe, following the loss of the Bee Miraculous and arrival of Zoe to Paris, runs away from home because she feels that she’s been replaced by a “better version of her” and that nobody needs or will miss her.

The sad part is that she’s not entirely wrong: Andre is too busy to realize that she ran away from home, thanks to Lila nearly everyone at school thinks that she’s on an expensive holiday (and Adrien and Marinette also believe her, if only because it would be in-character for her to go on an expensive holiday without saying anything to anyone) and only Sabrina and Zoe realized that she’s gone and are trying to find her without much luck.

Two months later and she’s barely hanging on as a homeless in the streets of Paris and her mental state worsens with each passing day. One day she stumbles upon an Akuma fight and Ladybug saves her but fails to recognize her. This causes Chloe to snap.

With her sanity damaged, Homeless!Chloe starts to hallucinate all the people she knows telling her that she’s worthless and nobody cares about her and the best thing she could do is throw herself in the Seine and die since she has nothing to live for. One month later after the Ladybug incident she almost does so but right before she jumps she realizes that despite everything she still wants to live, only for the Hallucination of Zoe to “push” her into the Seine. Before she can drown the currents bring her towards the Couffaine houseboat, where Anarka fishes the unconscious teen out of the waters and brings her to an hospital.

At the hospital the doctors who threat Chloe realize who she is and contact the police, who then contact Andre and ask him why the hell his daughter, who had disappeared from the public for three months ended up in the Seine. Andre, who didn’t even realize that his daughter was gone, freaks out and tries to cover his ass, only for the police threatening to charge him with child neglect and taking Chloe away from him and send her to her mother. As this happens, Chloe starts to freaking out and telling everyone that she doesn’t want to stay with her mother and Zoe because they will hurt and kill her and Anarka, in a well intentioned move that might bite her in the ass in the future, takes her out of the hospital, brings her to her houseboat and essentially adopts her.

The first days as a Couffaine aren’t easy for Chloe, not because she hates the houseboat (after three months living on the streets she’s fine in staying anywhere that isn’t a dumpster) but rather because she’s not doing fine mentally (constant hallucinations that tell you that she’s worthless and should die will make anyone insane) physically (she’s too thin, has various illnesses and ended up in the Seine, which clearly didn’t do good for her already precarious health) and lots of thrust issues, but her new family tries to make her feel better in any way possible.

Anarka at one point gives her a rescue cat that she names Pollen, like her former Kwami. They get along very well and she brings it everywhere she goes because it helps her calm down.

Following the disappearance of Chloe from the hospital, Andre manages to “persuade” (aka corrupts the higher ups) the police to stop the investigation against him and instead focus on finding his daughter and in the meantime covers up her disappearance with a public announcement that Chloe has been transferred into an exclusive school in Switzerland. Meanwhile Zoe and Sabrina decide to continue their search for Chloe by themselves and eventually they’re joined by Adrien and Alya (the former because he’s starting to be worried about the radio silence from her friend and the latter because she realized that something fishy was going on).

I’m still working on what will happen next but I have plans for Chloe to go back to school under a fake identity and bonding with the members of Kitty Section, plus a couple of ideas about Monarch trying to akumatize her and Zoe discovering where Chloe is and being divided between bringing her home or let her stay with her new family.

Homeless Chloe AU: Question... if you're willing to answer if Zoe finds out about Chloe what would she do...also what about Zoe's dad...

On one side she would want to bring her back home, but on the other side she doesn’t want to.

Almost nobody, including her, knew or realized that she ran away from home and while she wants to take her back home she knows Chloe wouldn’t want to because she found someone who care about and are trying to help her. Zoe would probably pretend to not know where her sister is so that she can have a better life, but on the other side she would be filled with regrets and guilt over hiding this important information.

As for Zoe’s dad… his biological one isn’t important in this AU while if Andre ever found out about this he would arrest the Couffaines for child abduction and try to get his daughter back… only to find out that due to his not realizing that Chloe was gone for months he would probably lose custody of her and Zoe and go to trial for child neglect.

Felix somehow gets trapped in a time loop with Adrien where no matter what he does, Adrien always dies by the end of the day by some manner, and then everything resets. I love how inevitable it all feels, the strange beauty to the prose when going over his deaths, and how you can feel Felix's increasing desperation throughout it all.

Marinette knew she tended to get tunnel vision when she was focused, but luckily her boyfriend Chat Noir was always there to watch her back as they fought Monarch. With their enemy having disappeared, however, they decided together that it was finally time to reveal themselves. In public. Face to face. It's a little silly to have to introduce yourself to your own boyfriend, but after all, it wasn’t Marinette’s fault that she never knew her boyfriend’s name. (Adrien has never been to school, and Marinette doesn't know him.)

This is adorable! The two of them are so smitten with each other, and Adrien's not used to people not recognizing him as Adrien AGRESTE on sight. Marinette's got quite a few surprises coming her way, she didn't expect her kitty to come from this kind of background.

Chat Noir Cataclyms Hawk Moth's Balls by @a-flaming-idiot

It's what it says on the tin; Chat Noir castrates his unaware father. And at the same time, Gabriel hits a high C to shatter glass, Nathalie realizes she wasted her life, Chloe accidentally outs herself, Adrien becomes homeless, there are no more secret identities, Tikki thinks she's funny, Nino and Alya take what's their's, and Chloe finally respects another human being. And a partridge in a pear tree~

So this is a fun little crackfic! Lots of jokes and absurd scenarios, you're likely to giggle at least a few times (and hopefully several times) while reading this.

I love how this examined how it feels to be controlled by an Amok, especially by someone who's never felt it before, who knows something's not right, that this isn't just psychological, but doesn't know what's causing the inability to disobey orders. And it means that Marinette really, truly understands why Adrien can't disobey now, not just on a mental level, but through experience.

I love Adrien just having run away, used a fake name, and then start working at a random cafe. Of course Felix still manages to track him down eventually. I loved seeing them talk things out!

If you like soulmate fics and Ladrien, then this is a real treat! I liked this particular take on the soulmate mythos, and the way Adrien and Ladybug had looked for their soulmate, had thought of them, was really sweet!

So this fic takes place from Griffe Noir's perspective, showing his thought process and feelings towards Toxinelle, and his reaction when she just... vanishes and is replaced. I like how, as much as he'd convinced himself before her disappearance that he hated Toxinelle, he finds that he can't stand her being gone.

When Chat asks Marinette to keep his tree safe for him, of course Marinette says yes. Marinette's got ten green thumbs. She can keep any plant alive, healthy, and blooming. But Chat's tree has hidden damage, and extraordinary actions might be necessary to keep him alive.

I've never seen a tree used as a sort of daemon, as a piece of a person's soul that reflects their physical and mental state, it's very creative! I loved seeing how Adrien's and Marinette's trees acted and what they looked like, and how Adrien's tree reacted to bad circumstances.

To Have Loved by @trishacollins

Adrien struggles with the loss of children he never had, with a life he remembers living but that wasn't real. The only person who understands him is Ladybug, his wife and his children's mother. Sleeping alone is such an empty feeling. Together, they might make a start at healing. Or they might just make a new disaster.

I love Jubilation angst. Depending on how "real" that timeline felt, waking up could be devastating - and Chat WAS certainly devastated in that episode. It's akin to the Pevensie kids in Narnia growing up, becoming rulers, and then tumbling out of the wardrobe a couple decades later, the same age at which they left. Of course Ladybug and Chat Noir would cling to each other afterwards, the only other person who remembers that imaginary timeline.

That's not all this story entails, however. Gabriel isn't too happy about Adrien sneaking out as much as he has been, and he WILL get answers, one way or another...

According to Tikki, Chat Noir has always been Ladybug’s partner. “Maybe someone ought to tell him that,” Marinette says bitterly. [An Enemies AU]

So apparently this was one of the earliest enemies AU in existence, with originally being written in early 2016, but it was only just now uploaded to AO3 so I'm still counting it for this list. Despite its age, it holds up remarkably well, the author guessed a lot of things correctly, like Gabriel being Hawk Moth, it being possible to akumatize multiple people at once so long as the same feeling is being used for all of them, and it being possible to reject akumas. Considering that none of that was confirmed in season 1 (granted, most people had guessed that Gabriel was Hawk Moth, even that early), it's pretty remarkable!

Gabriel Agreste was a hero. Of that, Marinette is sure. So what's with the bitter taste in her mouth whenever she sees his statue?

This is an alternate universe version of Re-creation's epilogue, with Gabriel's Wish actually altering people's memories - Marinette's, most notably - to forget that he was Monarch, and to erase the memory of that knowledge whenever she figures it out. And she keeps ON figuring it out, over and over, but the knowledge is never allowed to stick.

Ladybug always tells the truth. Chat Noir always lies.

So this is an interesting concept. While transformed, Ladybug physically cannot say anything untrue, while Chat can only speak in untruths. As a consequence, Chat gets good at figuring out how he can lie in such a way as to convey truthful information to Ladybug, and Ladybug learns how to speak deceptively without actually saying anything false.

Unfortunately for them, while they aren't bound by these conditions as civilians, it seeps into their civilian lives. Adrien learns to lie freely, easily, and convincingly, which is empowering at first, but leads to the class avoiding him when he starts being caught in them. Marinette doesn't outright lie, but her tendency to dance around subjects gets on people's nerves and similarly leads to others running out of patience with her or avoiding her. Basically, neither of their social lives fares well.

Shadybug knows how her story ends: people like her don't get happy endings. She's made her peace with that. Her name on Claw Noir's wrist changes things.

I love Shadybug and Claw Noir talking like this, getting more emotionally sincere than they usually are. I especially liked how Shadybug kept thinking about how her soulmate wouldn't want her, that she's a nobody. It fits what we see of her in the special.

I also really like the reveal of who hers and Claw's enemy is. It's not unexpected, but it's still good.

This was really sweet and I love how mixelation wrote Adrien's internal narration! You really viscerally understood his thoughts and feelings. It had some of the intimacy of a first person perspective, but well, in third person.

Crossed Wires by @torvalvtt

Marinette has taken Adrien up on his suggestion that they share an apartment in university to help cut costs and be closer to school. This would be fine, except they both seem to have a problem with keeping their suits off around the apartment.

This was fun and hilarious. I loved seeing Ladybug and Chat Noir hurriedly try to come up with excuses for why they were in their own apartment, while Marinette and Adrien weren't XD.

And when he turned back to Adrien, tired in a way he always was when he thought about Belos, at the concern in Adrien’s eyes, and he knew what really unsettled him about the boy. It was like looking in a mirror, at a younger version of himself. A version of him with a responsibility he shouldn’t have had, a version of him with a power different from everyone else. Cat Noir seemed to settle atop Adrien, like a skin he was more comfortable in. (And the Golden Guard’s mask was safe because he wasn’t Hunter in it, he was the strongest witch on the Isles.) -- Where Adrien gets plopped at Hunter's house and he has many feelings about it. (Maybe too much for someone who wasn't stranded in a different dimension.)

I love Adrien and Hunter talking. They don't know exactly how similar they are - Adrien is from the season 5 ending, so Gabriel's regarded as a hero and he doesn't know that he's a sentimonster - but even still, Hunter can see the similarities between his younger self and Adrien in the ways they act, can tell something's wrong, even without Adrien realizing it.

Nino awakes to find himself in a strange flooded world...

So this is an interesting concept. Nino wakes up to suddenly find himself in Chat Blanc's timeline, with no idea of what just happened aside from it probably being due to an akuma attack, as most strange happenings are. Of course, he meets Chat Blanc, though the cat doesn't know he's real.

I love how Nino realizes what's going on and empathizes with Chat. He needs company so badly.

Miraculous: A Lovesquare Dating Sim by @nagisachan1

This isn't very long, but I really like the way it's set-up, I played through so many CYOA books as a kid. Playing through this simple little Lovesquare fic whets my appetite for something more involved, it seems like it'd be easy to do a multi-writer collaboration for some sort of CYOA fic, and if that happened, I'd like to use this fic as a guide for how to format it. I especially love that at the top of each chapter, there's a link to go back to the previous chapter so you can easily try out the other branches.

AU idea: for Miraculous Ladybug...

Everyone is getting ready to graduate college*(a), when it's learned that Chloe is not only back in Paris*(b) but also that Chloe and Marinette*(c) are secretly*(d) dating*(e).

*(a): It's been years and friendships have lessened due to time, distance and Marinette just not trusting her friends with Miraculous' anymore due to 1) constantly being Accuma-tized and 2) trusting strangers (*chough* Lila's persona's *chough*) over herself. So currently Marinette doesn't give/lend out Miraculous.

*(b) the USA refused to issue a Green Card to a known supervillain / collaborator and deported Chloe after she turned 18. Chloe didn't turn to her dad/sister, who rightly banished her, and ended up homeless as no one will hire or rent to a known and willing villain (even shelters won't take her in).

*(c) I could see the Dupain-Cheng's doing charity work, such as feeding the homeless, which is how Marinette found Chloe, who she started following thinking she was up to something, only to learn exactly what her situation is.

*(d) Marinette didn't tell anyone about Chloe, at first because she didn't care, but later at Chloe's request in order to convince Chloe to stay at her family bakery to get her off the streets.

*(e) It started off as purely hate-"physical"ing but has, to their mutual horror/embarrassment, deepened into something more (or at least something not resentment based), from years of cohabitation and getting to know each other.

Vigilante AU ideas:

Shadybug and Claw Noir really don’t like being Vigilantes, but they’ve been banished to their universe with no way back, nobody thrusts them and they are forced to see their current universe selves living a good life while they’re technically homeless. They hate each other but develop some kind of toxic codependency thing because that’s all they have other than their Kwami.

Sentimonster Ladybug is a sentimonster created by the Cult of the Akuma to cause chaos and confusion only for Ladybug to recover her amok and Jalil merge its essence with the sentimonster, stabilizing her existence and ensuring that the cult cannot remove the feather from the amok (unless it gets destroyed). She is curious and interested in humanity and wants to become her own person, even if technically she’s a goddess with incredibly powers of creation (when she found out about Tikki she made a copy of her that would “store” her powers when not necessary, basically creating a fake Kwami that has similar powers to Tikki but a very ditzy and loopy personality).

Despite Viperion trying to help Kitty Section, they don’t trust him a lot because he stole a Miraculous from Ladybug (that they all respect a lot) and so they think that he’s untrustworthy and wants to get close to them in order to backstab them. Ironically Chloe wants to help him, if only because she thinks that this way they’ll be more willing to listen to her.

Sorry, it took me so long to answer this. The wifi in my area has been acting up a lot.

I like the idea that Shadybug and Claw Noir don't like being vigilantes in a world where they have to see their other selves so happy. I can imagine Mr. Damocles or one of the other older members letting them stay in their house and the League just taking care of them.

Imagine how much fun Plagg would have teasing Tikki about her senticopy. He would not let her live it down. I always enjoy the concept of a being trying to find themselves and become more 'human'.

The idea of Kitty Section being suspicious of Viperion despite his wish to protect them is interesting. I like how they think he stole the Miraculous and I do think the dynamic he can have with Chloe would be both hilarious and cool to watch.

The Prejudice of Appearance in LiS

Okay. I would like you to imagine an AU where Kate Marsh was rebelling against her parents and loved dressing up in goth clothes - it can even be the frilly cute goth clothes some girls wear, with the lace gloves and the like. She also has a more biting wit and speaks up for herself more. (We can see signs of that Kate if Max doesn't support Kate against David and suggests against going to the police over Nathan drugging her.)

Meanwhile, Chloe Price actually works and while she was a high school dropout has respectable looking clothes, wearing slacks and a good quality shirt. She's also quieter and less sarcastic, even in the face of being abused by David, because she's trying to avoid being hit by him.

Now envision the reaction of the LiS Haters if that was the Kate and Chloe we'd gotten. How much do you think they'd have railed against Kate and hated her outright (especially with her religiosity) while feeling more sympathy for Chloe?

How much of the hatred and belief of "she deserved it" from certain folks came from how Chloe dressed, while the fact Kate dresses like a schoolgirl makes people feel sympathy for her? (How much of society's hatred of the homeless is due to how they look? Do we not feel more sympathy when the homeless person is a good-looking white person?)

Okay but imagine an AU where everything is the same except Adrien never went to school but instead fled home as soon as he got the Chat Noir miraculous. He keeps fighting crime alongside Ladybug but is kinda homeless.

Chloe finds him when he seeks help and they hatch a plan wich may or may not have been made after him cutting off and dyeing his hair green in the middle of a meltdown (he wanted it blue but whatever, it was meant to ruin his perfect hair in some way-). Chloe makes a few phone calls and gets him a fake ID named Felix (the cousin will not exist in this version), gets him some makeup and eyeliner and boom he can go to school and has a small apartment.

So, Felix gets an imediate crush on Marinette after she gives him a croissant (wich is totally untelated to the fact that he was starving before she did so). He is also very Chat Noiry. Like, his personality is a mess. He cries himself to sleep every night because he is a mess but is always kind of a meme for everyone.

One day though Chat Noir stops showing up and instead Catwalker comes allong (and no its deffinetly not because Adrien- I mean, Felix heard someone saying he was annoying and deciding to get back to people pleasing at least in his hero persona). Ladybug gets a crush on him but is kinda weary because she misses her chaton so REVERSED LOVE SQUARE!!

Au where Chloe runs away from home at 16 and gets away with it somehow?? And is reunited with The Gang 2 years later via wacky highjinx and akuma shenanigans

Chloe leaves home, taking as much money and expensive jewellery she could pawn as she possibly could so that she wouldn’t be entirely homeless on her extended surprise vacation.

Basically she has to return to Paris at 18 to acquire her legal documents and shit, but the process is tough and leads to her eventual akumatisation. She spirals into unchecked negative emotions because the govt is giving her a hard time getting the documents which really sucks since she hasn’t done anything illegal and it’s literally not her fault that they didn’t look hard enough so?? Why are you blaming her?? And also she hasn’t been in Paris for 2 years so she’s gotten used to not being under threat of akumatisation for any slightly bad emotion

It’s also difficult bc both visually and as a person she’s changed a lot so she doesn’t get recognised immediately or anything. She feels too awkward about confronting any of her old classmates at this point too bc of how she was

She gets in her own head about things, and is doing her best to redirect her frustrations and eventually finds a way to blame the whole thing on hawkmoth. After all she is very good at blaming people for things they aren’t necessarily involved in!

The miraculous’ have all been growing stronger over the course of Chloe’s indefinite surprise vacation, both the good and evil holders. Which is dangerous in many ways of course, but also beneficial to Chloe bc hawkmoth got cocky and didn’t properly check who she was angry at.

His monologue drones on about some shit on her getting revenge and she stopped paying attention halfway through. But the important part is she kinda wants to get revenge on hawkmoth rn so you know what? That’s what she gonna do.

This leads to an eventful akuma ‘fight’ for the heroes of Paris bc they’re really just trying to hold her back from low-key trying to track down and kill hawkmoth and *goddamn it Chloe this could ruin our whole operation!*

On that note, the heroes don’t recognise her either, between her unexpected reappearance, personal changes and her akumatised self, aptly named ‘Queen Karma” she’s unrecognisable. Which makes figuring out what happened kind of difficult for LB and CN

On the bright side they do find out that hawkmoth can’t undo his akuma! (At least in this au he cant, or at least under certain plot convenient circumstances he can’t)

Eventually though, LB manages to talk her down enough that they can grab and break the little ladybug pinned to her jacket where the akuma was hiding. (LB figured she might be a fan and managed to get her to calm down enough to listen to LBs plan on how She can defiantly help them right now!!)

As the akuma is purified and the civilian beneath is revealed the heroes are Shocked. They are stood silent with their mouths open for a solid minute, Chloe doesn’t notice this because she’s busy being Maybe Concussed and groggy. (While she’s changed a lot they can still recognise that it’s Chloe, having been in close contact with her for years and getting a closer look right now)

Once Chloe’s head clears, she explains her situation to Ladybug, who promises to get the government to cooperate and give her the medical records, legal docs and the paperwork for a Name Change.

Ladybug also hands Chloe a piece of paper with an address on it.

So Chloe gets the legal stuff sorted, no longer a bourgeois but rather a simple Beau. Has some shocking realisations aided by her medical records about just how sketchy her family is, and cautiously sets out to find where this mysterious address leads her.

She had promised Chloe as Ladybug that she had a friend who could help her out, of course neglecting to mention that SHE is the friend, and also not exactly thinking through that she would now have to be sharing her one bedroom apartment with the girl she (used to?) hate! Not to mention that this would make sneaking off to be Ladybug just as hard as back when she lived with her parents and oh god what would Chloe say about all the posters and magazine cutouts of various celebrity crushes all over her walls?? /Shitshitshit!!/

homeless Chloe AU Let’s say chloe has been out in the streets for a couple of months by the time anarka fishes her out of the seine, since she has been living on the streets with no secure food supply, being able to bathe and exposed to the elements, she shouldn’t be in great health, maybe the next day anarka takes her to the hospital because she is probably getting pretty ill.

Since chloe isn’t in great mental health, she doesn’t tell the doctors who she is and since she also doesnt carry identity papers with her, nobody knows who she is, they can only tell she is a homeless teenager, ages 13-14 with worsening mental issues, so an agent of Aide sociale à l'enfance (ASE), somebody in his 50 to 60, veteran of the agency who has deal with cases like this before comes in to deal with the case.

while the agent assess chloe, he manages to get her to talk and starts noticing some red flags, specially in terms of extreme neglect while the doctors manage to finally find her identity as the daughter of the mayor, they notify him, he responds and comes in…… two weeks after the fist notice, after they literally been calling him everyday at every hour, by the time he comes to the hospital he is confused as to why chloe is in the hospital, only to be told by the same agent of before that due to some worrisome facts; chief amounts them that Chloe literally run away from home 2 months ago and he didn’t even bothered to fill a missing person report, responded their calls or even seem to notice chloe was missing, plus some of chloe testimonies of how the two of them interact, she is being temporarily removed from his custody (Audrey as Well, but she still hasn’t even picked up the phone) and he is slapped a restraining order from chloe, along with the fact that know there is an investigation to see evaluate him as a parent with the very real possibility of losing chloe permantely.

As to why anarka keeps chloe, well maybe she responds better to anarka than others on the fact that she saved her life and despite her… eccentricities she is proven to be a capable adult capable of taking care of children so she gets temporarily custody.

Intense! I kind of like to keep authorities out of things broadly. Like, once you bring them in, you lose the narrative pretty quickly. ML stories tend to be focused on the people, with the threat of systemic violence as a backdrop in serious cases.

How about: Anarka spirits Chloé out of the hospital before André arrives. She used a fake ID of course so she's not easily found. Child services is torn between searching for the daughter and the father. Of course when André finally gets involved he wants everything swept under the rug, so it's a red tape battle.

Meanwhile Anarka just moves the liberty up river a ways outside city limits for a bit...

Homeless Chloe AU: The First Day at School

Chloe walked as fast as she could, attempting to ignore all the students in the school and stay as close to Juleka as possible.

Just because you wear new clothes and you have died your hair it doesn’t mean that they cannot recognize you.

She tried to ignore Not-Marinette’s comments when Not-Adrien popped in existence right in front of her face.

She’s right, you know? Did you really thought that you could just change your style and pretend to be another person? They already realized who you are and are probably waiting for the right moment to get their revenge… I wonder what they are planning to do to you.

Chloe rushed right thru the hallucination and kept walking straight to the classroom, attempting to ignore all of the other hallucinations increasingly loud death threats and everything else, including Juleka's telling her to stop. She was so concentrated in walking that she didn’t realize that she was going straight against a student until it was too late.

“S-sorry I didn’t… I-I was…” She said, attempting to apologize to the student, but the words kept failing to get out of her mouth (You never apologized before, of course you cannot do that). Then she realized who she apologizing to: Sabrina.

Chloe had to use all of her willpower to not scream and run away from her.

Well, well, well! The real me is here right in front of you! I wonder if she’s going to tell you first how much she hates you or give you a punch in the face first… Would it be fun if the other people that you bullied also arrived and joined her in beating you up?

"Are you okay? You look like you saw a ghost..." Asked Sabrina, confused by the reaction of the girl.

"YES. I AM VERY FINE THANK YOU." Said Chloe.

Bullshit. You know very well that you're not.

"Shut up Not-Sabrina..." Muttered Chloe to the hallucination.

"What?" Said confused Sabrina, now more weirded than before by the girl's strange behavior.

"NOTHING! Uhh... I'm sorry... It's just that... that today is m-my uh... first day here! Yes! And... uh... I'm kinda nervous and..." Stuttered Chloe as she struggled to find excuses for her weird behavior.

"Oh! So you must be the girl that had been staying with the Couffaine! Your name is Melody, right?" Asked Sabrina.

"Yes... A-and who you are?"

"My name is Sabrina Raincomprix and I'm going to be one of your classmates. If you want I can show you where the classroom is..."

"Hi Sabrina! Who's the new girl?"

Chloe blinked a couple of time. She was outside of the school and Juleka was holding her.

"BREATHE!" She shouted again.

Chloe, slightly less dazed than before, did as she told her to do.

"What do you see in the sky?" Asked her Juleka.

"I-I see... a pigeon..."

"What else?"

"... some clouds... a plane..."

"Now tell me three things that you like to eat..."

"Sushi... strawberries... and the macarons Marinette's parents make."

"Do you feel better?" Asked Juleka, still worried about her.

"Yes... I don't think that I'm ready to go back to school..." Said Chloe, ashamed of what just happened.

"That's okay... I'll call mom and ask her to pick you up."

"Thanks." said Chloe before looking back at the building and sighed. She thought that she was ready to go back there, but once she came inside it all came crashing down and seeing Zoe made things so much worse. She now knew how far away she was from a full recovery and this made her sadder than before.

At least she knew that she could count on Juleka, but for how long she was willing to help her?

Imagine this; we know that since magic is real, and kwamies are, in a way, aliens, there is naturally other alien civilizations somewhere in the universe that’s thriving and having their own culture, habits, ecosystems, and all that.

Imagine what if they ended up visiting the earth not with bad intent or desire to destroy the planet mind you-(frankly that cliche is so overdone it hurts)- but because they were a little interested in human cultures and interacting with their galactic neighbours.

Naturally, Marinette and the rest are surprised, but have no problem accepting them. It’s not exactly any weirder than the kwami, now is it?

After few hours negotiating, it was decided that the aliens will share their own version of websites (all non harmful, of course) with the humans, but in exchange is that all the humans will give any amount of money that makes them “rich” by human standards, which means that all humans will only have enough money to qualify as one of the working class have.

And no, the aliens do not need to amass that money because they are greedy, but because they have the power to transform that useless (until it’s given worth through the concept of money) paper and coin into magical machines to help others in many ways. Any kind of currency works, as long as enough people accept that it has value.

Not to mention that in many of the alien’s cultures, amassing money for the sake of being rich and greedy is practically a crime, as they desire to help others the most.

Of course, Gabriel and the Mayor along with similar people might object, but there are two millions of people in Paris and a handful of them, and Marinette took the chance to actively and publicly agree with the aliens a Ladybug, along with the other heroes (except Adrien and Chloe most likely, since, you know, they want to keep their obscene levels of wealth, thank you very much!).

The general public’s decision made, all of Gabriel’s money magically vanishes, along with his “house” (more like castle) transforming into a huge apartment building where homeless people can live for free, as the aliens will carefully watch Gabriel and Adrien to make sure they won’t cause trouble.

They also decided to help the Parisians deal with the trauma of having to deal with repressing their emotions, and captured that idiot of a magical terrorist. Oh. And look at that. Now they don’t have to watch Gabriel, because he’s Hawkmoth, and they just caught him!

Adrien will have to deal with the fact that his “rich life” is not so rich anymore, and he will learn to shut up and grow from that and learn how other normal people deal with life when he can’t blow away all his problems with money or acting sad and blaming others.

Have fun with this now, rich people.

One Year On: Life is Strange 2 Critique

December 3rd, 2020 marks a year since Life is Strange 2 ended. I was inspired by @smitethepatriarchy‘s text posts (here, but there are several other answered asks worth reading) and @suhaplays’s text post (here) criticizing Life is Strange 2 to write a critique about how Life is Strange 2 handled certain themes and social issues.

(tw: gun violence, police brutality, animal death, incarceration, racism. In this essay, I use the word “queer” in a reclaimed sense, as a queer person myself. Of course, spoiler warning for all five episodes of Life is Strange 1 and 2).

A year on, my feelings about this game have soured... a lot. When the game was first announced, I was overjoyed that our new protagonists would be two Latino boys. Finally, we would have a culturally meaningful, groundbreaking video game with people of color and their experiences at the forefront! 

Then the game was met with immediate backlash and I utterly exhausted myself defending it for weeks on Reddit and Tumblr. Throughout 2019, as the episodes came out I became increasingly disillusioned, frustrated, and disappointed with where the story was going. I couldn’t figure out why I felt so damn miserable while playing this game.

Then in the summer of 2020, when Tell Me Why began rolling out pre-release material, I noticed that they posted a Q&A about transphobia, gave content warnings, and discussed at length about their collaboration with GLAAD, Checkpoint, and the Huna Heritage Foundation to make the game with sensitivity and proper research. I cannot speak for trans and gender non-conforming people on whether Dontnod succeeded at doing so with Tell Me Why. But Life is Strange 2 did… none of that.

Essentially, I realized that the reason why I was so frustrated with LiS2 is because it focuses way too heavily on a trauma narrative. This comes off as insensitive to players of color without any content warnings or extensive research.

Sean didn’t have to get kidnapped, kicked in the face, and called a racial slur by a gas station owner. Daniel did not need to watch his puppy get mauled by a mountain lion for the sake of a “difficult choice.” Sean didn’t have to lose his eye for the sake of heightened drama. Sean didn’t need to get called a racial slur and humiliated by his native language/beaten in the desert for refusing to sing. Daniel didn’t need to get shot— twice. Hell, all of “Faith” probably could’ve been cut— how is a church cult that brainwashes Daniel and beats Sean half to death relevant at all to the story?

Even if not all of the game’s violence was racially motivated, the consistent trauma that Sean and Daniel endure does not make for positive representation— or even good characterization. There is a difference between sympathetic characters and well-written characters, and trauma does not make Sean and Daniel any more complex or likable-- just more fucking traumatized.

LiS2 is more grounded in reality, but that also makes plot holes that much harder to excuse (Daniel’s powers being spotted, most of the Parting Ways ending, Sean’s prison sentence). But most of all, it grounds all of Sean and Daniel’s pain and trauma in reality. 

There is no magicking away a town-destroying storm with time travel. Sean can’t keep his dad alive by ripping up a Polaroid. After Max unlocked her powers, she was still a Blackwell student, reconnecting with Chloe, taking photos, saving lives, and uncovering a murder mystery. After Daniel unlocked his powers, the Diaz brothers lost everything. 

The game never lets you forget that Sean and Daniel are homeless, wanted, constantly in danger, and that they are never getting their old lives back. It permeates the entire game, and for players of color, just reinforces a sad, miserable, grim reality about living in the United States. It is, as @smitethepatriarchy said, potentially triggering for players of color, and it is certainly not something I needed to be reminded of.

And the representation of POC? It feels shallow and ill-researched. It would only take a Google search to find out that Dia de Muertos (a holiday to honor the dead, no less) was from October 31 to November 2 in 2016, the year the game takes place, but Daniel only talks about Halloween in episode 1. Sean and Daniel never discuss any Mexican customs, foods, or holidays. Sean doesn’t speak Spanish with his immigrant father, only during a scene when he’s traumatized (again!) by two racists, and again when talking to Mexican immigrants— in jail. Daniel doesn’t speak Spanish at all. Most of their allies throughout the game are white, including Finn and Cassidy, who appropriate Black culture with their dreadlocks.

So what’s left? Sean and Daniel’s existence as people of color is, at worst, just a narrative prop to justify everything that happens to them. They are people of color on the surface only. In a meta-sense, the game only considers the color of their skin and their last names as what is narratively important… yikes.

I don’t have anything against people who genuinely loved the game and were moved by its messages and story. But I can’t help but feel bitter that white players have the luxury of only thinking of this game as a work of fiction and not feeling any personal reliability to Sean and Daniel’s racialized trauma.

I don’t regret playing LiS2, but I do regret all the time and energy I spent defending it in the beginning. I understand now that I shouldn’t let people’s opinions get to me, nor should I feel obligated to like or defend a game for its attempts at representation. But now, I think I understand how queer fans must have felt in late 2015 when Polarized released. After following the game for 10 months, to see that Chloe’s ultimate destiny was to die and Pricefield is another ship plagued by the Bury Your Gays trope (in the ending that the devs clearly put more work into) must have been just as disillusioning and infuriating. I understand why some fans were so quick to unfollow LiS or develop mixed feelings about the series, because that’s how I feel too after following LiS2’s development from September 2018 to December 2019.

Before I end, I will admit that Life is Strange 2 arrived at a time when I needed it. I still stand by my belief that DN did a great job characterizing Sean, Daniel, and Chris without toxic masculinity, which is the best thing they could’ve done for a male-focused follow-up to a game about queer women. I love that Sean is still a canonically bisexual man of color in a major video game and that DN didn’t forget their queer audience. I love the world and characters that DN built, but I still prefer AU fanfictions of their normal lives, without all that trauma. 

So, I will continue to treasure Lyla and her 10 minutes of screentime (aka the only shred of Asian American representation I can get from this series). I still reblog LiS2 fanart to support the artists. I still support Dontnod, because as Tell Me Why has shown, they are capable of researching and writing stories with more sensitivity. And let’s be honest-- I’m still gonna be hella excited if Life is Strange 3 is announced.

But so many aspects of Life is Strange 2 were bungled that it came off as a remarkably average and forgettable experience. A year on, I don’t hate Life is Strange 2, but I am writing this to move on from it.

This is an AU of when Rich went to Jake’s house before the party. Rich and Jake but some other characters are mentioned. Not really a Richjake thing, as it’s only a platonic pairing. Besides, why doesn’t like angst?

Jake misses Rich.

The real Rich. The Rich who would get into arguments with homophobes on his Twitter. The Rich who hates musicals but would still join just because Jake did, and would end up having a blast. The Rich who would trip and fall during soccer and Jake would have to cover for him.

This isn’t the Rich he knows. Not the one who bullies that nerd just for existing. What happened? Jake was going to find out.

There they were, in Jake’s room. Sometimes, Jake would sneak in a beer.

It’s been Jake and his college aged sister there to pay the bills. Even then, she’s normally trying to work just to save herself Jake from homelessness.

Jake doesn’t mind. It’s better than being homeless. Sometimes, it’s even better than his parents actually being there.

Rich was a short guy with bleach blond hair with a red streak in the middle of it. It must be coincidental, or Jake making a big deal of something that really isn’t, but the streak, to him, was a representation of Rich’s downfall.

“Have you heard about Chloe?” Was the first thing he asked me.

“What do you think?” Jake asked, his eyebrows up. “I’d rather not talk about Chloe right now.”

Jake scooched closer to Rich. “What happened to you? We used to be really good friends.”

Rich rolled his eyes. “I just grew up. Hey, how’s Christine?”

Jake was upset that Rich ignored what he asked, but he answered anyways.

“We broke up.” He responded. Rich’s eyes immediately went into pity. “It wasn’t a big deal. We’re still friends, we just thought we aren’t compatible together.” Jake immediately detracted. The last thing he wants is for Richard Goranski to feel bad for him.

“Man, that sucks.” Rich gave me a red solo cup. Jake put it on his dresser.

“Hey. Can we not drink? I miss you for you.”

“Oh. No problem.” Rich agreed. “Hey, can I tell you something?”

“Me first.” Jake said, lifting up his index finger. “What happened to you? Ever since sophomore year, you’ve been acting different. What’s it about?”

“Well…” Rich hesitates and scratching his chin, as if there’s some voice in his head he’s asking to answer that. “Can you keep a secret?”

“Oh, yeah. Sure. What is it?” Jake leaned towards Rich.

“So, there is this pill. It’s supposed to make you cool and all.”

“Dude, why didn’t you tell me you wanted to write science fiction?”

Rich just laughed, but Jake’s face remained dead neutral.

“No, it’s not science fiction.” Rich says, after seeing that Jake wasn’t laughing. “I mean, I literally have it. I have one for you too, it may benefit you.”

“What? I can’t tell if you’re messing with me, Goranski.” Jake elbowed him in a friendly manner.

“Try it for yourself.”

“I think I’ll refuse this one.” I give the pill back to him. “And, if you can, I think you should refuse it too.”

“Hang on a sec.” Rich said. “Can I have the beer? It’s the only way to stop the pill. Ow!”

Rich rubbed his head. His eyes were watery, but no tears were being formed. “Help me. Help me please.”

Jake did not know to believe him or not, but it was too late. He took the cup and started drinking out of it, then collapsed on the floor.

“Rich!”

Shaking him couldn’t have been helping, Jake thought, but apparently it was. Rich woke up as if nothing happened.

“Phew, that monster is out of me. For a little bit at least.”

“Is there any way it can be permanently out?” Jake asked, lifting Rich up.

“Yeah, I think.”

“What is it?”

“I’m not telling you.”

“Why not?”

“Because, I’m better with it.” Rich shrugged. “See, I’m cool with it. I’m actually rad with it.”

“You were more rad without it!” Jake proclaims. “Richard Goranski, you’re better than this. I know who you really are. Why do you think you need the SQUIP? Be honest.”

Full tears were now traveling Rich’s red cheeks. “Because, I’m not cool. No one likes me without it. Not Brooke, not Chloe, not Jenna—”

“But, I do.” Jake held his hand. It was sweaty, most from his fear. “Jake, I’m sorry. I should just go.”

“No, why do you think you aren’t cool?” Jake runs after him. “You’re very cool. I care about you, Rich. Tell me what is going on? Why do you think you aren’t cool?”

“…’Cause I’m bi.”

Rich, after realizing what he just said, runs from Jake’s house.

“Rich. Wait! Rich!”

Jake runs after him, but there was no point. He was on his front lawn

“Before you go, what is this pill called?”

Rich bites his lip. “SQUIP.” He says, before hopping onto his bike and leaving Jake behind to think. Jake closes the door.

So, that’s what ruined him. SQUIP.
