re: drabbles: i would be interested to see any kind of take on what life in the PCA is like; the EKDROMOI and HC/LC-HM duos in particular always seemed like funny Just Guys Being Dudes dynamics
OH I LOVE IDEAS LIKE THESE... i ended up just going on a ramble dear god... uh i hope you enjoy! a bit of worldbuilding for PCA and RLF (with a surprise Flatwell mention!)
Thanks for the prompt!
When Erik had been handed his posting for Rubicon-3 (or "ISB2262" as most within the UEG knew it), his first dismayed thought had been: i've hit a dead-end in my career.
See, the PCA were not viewed favourably within the UEG's pilot corps for a multitude of reasons, ranging from their infamous reputation as "space cops" to the fact that their direct chain of command was an actual, literal AI called The System, and whom many within the PCA spoke of as if she was their divine god that had descended from heaven itself to guide them.
Also, there were no glorious battles with the PCA, no chances for winning spoils of war during inter-corporate conflicts or achieving swift promotions by looking good at the right moment. All you did in the PCA was sit on some quarantined rock - normally out in the middle of bumfuck nowhere - and weren't allowed to take souviners or salvage anything profitable from the surface. It was basically guard duty but for years.
At least with guard duty on solar colonies you had some form of civilisation to visit. On Rubicon-3? Civilisation had been razed into nothing but ashes after that catastrophic industrial accident almost fifty years ago, and the remanents were just a ragtag group of stubborn colonists who refused to relocate because this is our home! Nevermind that their home was basically a hole in the ground full of contaminated soil.
Needless to say, Erik's expectations had been low when he reported to the PCA's main base on Rubicon-3. The planet had looked ugly when he came in, the atmosphere riddled with enough chunked up asteroids to make navigating the mess an absolute nightmare for the autopilot and what little surface he glimpsed looking grey and lifeless. The oceans looked good, at least, but Erik didn't have gills, and he doubted he'd be spending any time on their blasted-out beach resorts.
His expectations had been this: he'll sit in whatever passed as their guard room watching the live feed from their defence satellites, bored out of his mind except for moments of fleeting excitement when some wildcat miner came barrelling towards the planet in delusional hopes of striking it big with a Coral deposit. The nights would be long, the days even longer, and he'll be cold, miserable and wondering when he'd be posted out so his career could start again.
Instead, reality had been this: piloting the most advanced MT he'd ever sat in, wielding the most powerful weapons he'd ever laid hands on... yet trapped in an endless struggle against ye olde BASHO ACs on a near regular basis like he was in Hell and this was the ordeal he was condemned to endure for the rest of his afterlife.
The Rubiconian Liberation Front. Erik had heard of them back on Earth when he was in the UEG's main pilot corps, but no one had thought them as any serious threat. Just a group of colonists who had hijacked a construction MT or two and occasionally threw rocks through the PCA's figurative windows. They weren't a real threat. They were just civilians with guns. They'd be scared off easily just by shooting a few warning shots their way.
Wrong.
They were like rabid racoons that refused to leave the PCA's dumpsters. Almost every night, Erik and his squad would be crashed out when the perimetres alarms would trip, and almost every night he'd be chasing after RLF ACs and MTs running off with whatever the hell they could carry. Telephone poles. Copper wires. Vehicles like jeeps or vans. One of them had ran off with a fucking HVAC system once and to date Erik was still baffled about that.
But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was him.
Middle fucking Flatwell.
The RLF leadership was a bit strange, but every PCA pilot knew of Flatwell. He was a Gen Three and had been part of the Rubiconian militia as a qualified, albeit green, AC pilot when the Fires had hit Rubicon. Guy was likely pushing seventy and still piloted rings around the PCA like he was bioengineered in some fucking lab somewhere to be the bane of their existence.
The System - their chain of command, their AI - knew everything it could dig up about Flatwell. His AC schematics, his habits, his history, his fighting profile and even including some interesting yet bizarre factoids like 'has a legitimate Earth citizenship due to successful seduction of a high-ranking Arquebus executive' and 'suspected illicit affair with an intelligence officer within Arquebus HQ', which meant not only was Flatwell a demon in the AC, he was a demon under the sheets too, forbidden knowledge that Erik could've gone without knowing.
But forbidden knowledge or not, the simple fact was: Flatwell was a damn good pilot, and most of the PCA pilots were just average.
In high-tech MTs and using even higher tech weaponry, sure, but still average. But, when Erik had been new to the post, had been dazzled by these amazing MTs and beautiful plasma weapons, he'd charged headfirst into a fight against Flatwell without hesitation, ignoring The System's soft bleat for him to use caution.
Needless to say, Erik had totalled that shiny MT and ended up ejecting before even a full thirty seconds had passed. Guy was fast.
Fortunately, however, the PCA were a lot more forgiving when it came to totalled MTs. Back in the UEG that would've come straight out of Erik's paycheck, as all repair bills did (he was still paying off his previous repairs... just thirty more years and he'd be debt free!) - but the PCA had brushed it off. Turned out they had a pretty sweet fabrication system and could churn out MTs in the hundreds within hours. Where they got the raw materials for that, Erik wasn't so sure... but the PCA were a branch of the UEG, so it was probably legitimate and not at all illegal or suspicious.
(One of the first rules you learn in the PCA: do not think too deeply about how it functions for legal reasons)
But, while the posting was leagues more exciting than he had initially believed, and incredibly more dangerous, his initial dismayed thought still held true: it was a career killer, because here was another, hidden rule he hadn't known until his boots were firmly on Rubicon-3 and his transporter was flying away from the planet:
Once you're on Rubicon-3, you die on Rubicon-3. No transfers, to retiring, no early-release. The PCA's mission was lifelong and no amount of bellyaching or protesting wold change that. Erik had been sprinted through the five stages of grief before he accepted his grim fate.
Maybe he had died on the way here, he had thought. Maybe this was his punishment for contributing directly to the voracious war machine that was the UEG... how many unionised workers had he killed over the years? How many colonies had he visited to stomp down on burgeoning independent movements so corporations didn't lose a source of revenue? How many had he stomped down on, just for his own continued comfort within the callous galaxy that humanity had made for itself?
Rubicon. It really made you think about these things. Erik slowly began to understand why the PCA's relationship with the RLF was how it was. Yeah, they crashed out every night, and yeah, sometimes Flatwell was there waiting for them, but most times...
Erik would crash out with his squad and only chase the thieving RLF a few miles before breaking off pursuit. He told himself there was no point. What they stole could easily be replaced within a few days. It wasn't as if they were stealing weapons or whatever. If they wanted a fucking HVAC system or a bunch of telecommunication wiring that badly, then they could have it. No skin of Erik's nose, and the PCA didn't bill him for failure to retrieve stolen goods.
He didn't sympathise with them, and the RLF certainly didn't sympathise with the PCA. They killed a lot of each other over the years Erik had been posted here, and Flatwell was particularly merciless. But.
They were both stuck on this planet, either willfully or not. They were both on Rubicon-3 for the long haul, and one way or another, they were gonna share the same fate: they were going to die here, eventually.
They were never going to leave this razed shithole.

In Gaza, Israel is gearing up to commit genocide. It is not doing so quietly. It is repeating its intent every day, announcing it to the world in both its words and actions. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has described those in Gaza as ‘human animals’, while declaring that Israel is cutting off water, fuel, electricity and food to the entire blockaded strip. Likud officials have called for nuclear strikes as well as a second Nakba. Israel’s President, Isaac Herzog, has rejected the distinction between civilians and combatants, asserting that ‘it is an entire nation out there that is responsible’. Israeli military officials have made clear that their aim is ‘damage, not precision’. All the while, Israel has subjected the 365-square-kilometre area to relentless shelling, dropping the same number of bombs on its 2.3 million inhabitants as the United States unleashed on Afghanistan in an entire year, at the height of its murderous invasion. Hospitals, mosques, schools and homes – all have been deemed adequate military targets. At least 2,750 people have died so far, over one million have been displaced, nearly ten thousand are wounded.
Half of Gaza’s inhabitants were told to relocate to the south of the strip via military-approved ‘safe routes’. Israel then bombed these routes while people were doing just that. Many other Palestinians refused to follow the order. They know better than anyone that this is a straightforward attempt at ethnic cleansing. Nearly 80% of Palestinians in Gaza are refugees, expelled from their lands in 1948 and refused their right to return by their colonial rulers. In the south, the situation is dire too, thanks to continual aerial bombardment, shortages of water, food and electricity, and the influx of new arrivals. Israel continues to block the entry of humanitarian aid through the Rafah crossing, which has been hit repeatedly by air raids.
Israeli officials, including Netanyahu himself, have announced that this is ‘only the beginning’. Three hundred thousand troops have gathered near Gaza and are awaiting orders to launch a ground offensive which could, we are told, last months. The resultant death and destruction would be unimaginable. There is a high likelihood that the entire northern Gaza Strip would be razed to the ground, and that the inhabitants of the enclave would be corralled into an even smaller area – forcing them to choose between death, unbearable captivity, or exile. Israel justifies this indiscriminate bloodshed as a response to the killing of 1,300 Israelis in the days following the Palestinian break-out on 7 October, and the need to prevent Hamas from carrying out further operations. Its current assault must be understood, first and foremost, as a response to the political humiliation it suffered at the hands of the most isolated section of the Palestinian population.
After eighteen years of siege by land, air and water, during which Israel’s stated policy was to ‘put the Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger’ by severely restricting food access, while regularly ‘mowing the grass’ – i.e., carrying out campaigns of assassination and mass killing – Palestinians in Gaza finally managed to tear down the barbed wire that kept them captive. Through that act alone, they endangered the political future of Netanyahu and his coalition, along with the process of normalization between Israel and the region’s most autocratic and repressive regimes. In addition, they punctured Israel’s illusion of omnipotence, exposing its vulnerability for the whole world – and, more importantly, for all Palestinians – to see. Retribution will now be conducted by all available means – including forced displacement or outright annihilation.
The question facing all of us in the West is how to stop the impending genocide. Our rulers have made it clear that they will allow Israel to carry out its plans – invoking the country’s ‘right to defend itself’ by carpet bombing a civilian population. The US and the UK have sent battleships to demonstrate their unflinching support. Ursula von der Leyen travelled to Tel Aviv to give Netanyahu the EU’s backing. Keir Starmer insisted that Israel had a right to cut off vital supplies to the entire blockaded population. Simultaneously, our governments have tried their best to repress Palestine solidarity movements on the domestic front: France banned pro-Palestine demonstrations altogether, Berlin followed suit, and the UK considered joining in. Of course, this follows a years-long attempt to criminalize the Palestinian cause and stamp out the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, under the guise of ‘countering terrorism’ or ‘fighting antisemitism’. Why is our political class so invested in suppressing criticism of the apartheid regime? The answer is obvious. Western states support Israel in order to maintain their power at a crucial crossroads of world trade. Challenging that power is impermissible, because any attempt to hold Israel accountable for its crimes is – by definition – an attempt to hold our own states accountable for their involvement in them. Not only are our rulers prepared to let Israel level Gaza; they will even provide it with diplomatic cover and military supplies.
What is standing between Gaza and genocide, then, is political pressure – an internationalist movement whose aim is to force Western governments to backtrack and restrain the Israeli killing machine. Last weekend we saw the first stirrings of this movement in its current phase. Across the globe, hundreds of thousands – perhaps millions – turned out to march. Sana’a, Baghdad, Rabat, and Amman were filled with protesters as far as the eye could see, bringing cold sweats to the rulers of the region, who see the connection between their populations’ demands for Palestinian liberation and demands for their own. In London, Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin, in New York, Brussels and Rome, in Cape Town, Tunis, and Nairobi, in Sydney and Santiago, people took to the street to demand an end to the onslaught, an end to the siege, and a free Palestine.
These scenes were extraordinary – but they alone will not be enough. In the US, activists have targeted the offices of key policymakers, staging protests and sit-ins, demanding that they drop their support for Israel’s crimes and take action to end the assault. Shaming politicians in this way will be an important tactic in the days and weeks to come. The recent history of the solidarity movement offers other methods that may also prove effective. In the UK, Palestine Action has spent years targeting armaments factories and stopping the production of weapons intended for use against Palestinians. Dockers in Italy, South Africa and the US have refused to handle Israeli cargo during previous military assaults on Gaza, disrupting the flow of goods and weapons to the country. During the winter of 2008-9, as Israel launched its first massive assault on the strip following the imposition of the blockade three years earlier, students across the UK occupied their campuses, calling for their universities to show concrete solidarity with Palestinians and for their government to cut diplomatic ties. They used the occupied spaces to host lectures, discussions and debates. Amid growing repression against the Palestine solidarity movement, such spaces could once again play a crucial role in enabling street-level organization.
It is up to activists themselves to decide which methods are most suited to their local and national contexts. Yet, across the board, there can be no return to business as usual. We have a collective obligation to ratchet up the pressure on our governments, and on Israel itself, to stop the genocide and mass displacement. In the UK, several trade unions expressed support for the demonstration last weekend, as well as their concern about the situation in Gaza. Can such concern be translated into meaningful interventions? Can union militants move from making solidarity statements to taking solidarity industrial action? If lecturers and teachers, dockers and train drivers – to name but a few of those who turned out at the rally in London – could organize work stoppages, demanding that the government reverse its position and stop the ongoing mass murder, then Britain’s leaders would not have the political space to give Israel a carte blanche.
Today, Palestinian unions have called on trade unionists across the world to show their solidarity by refusing to continue with the provision of arms to Israel. They have asked that workers in relevant industries make the following commitments:
These demands must now be brought to workplaces and unions across the West, where they will find important allies among existing campaigns against the arms trade. Points four and five are not industry-specific, and can have a much wider application across the labour movement.
The task ahead of us is clear. Genocide, ethnic cleansing and a second Nakba are not acts of God. They can be prevented. Our governments have so far refused to raise objections. Let us remind them of the costs of their complicity.

The Solar System in Doctor Who is crazy
If you’re a Doctor Who fan, you’re probably aware of a few intelligent species that call the Sun’s system their home.
There’s humans, of course, and Earth also has the Silurians and the Sea Devils. The Zygons are refugees on Earth. The Ice Warriors are on Mars. And the Cybermen were first shown to come from Mondas, Earth’s astrophysically-improbable twin planet.
That’s already six intelligent species who call this system home. But what if I told you that that’s barely scratching the surface?
Mercurials
Mercurials are tall, silver-skinned humanoids with pointy arms and flat, round feet. They are very much products of their time, underdeveloped peaceful creatures who manage to survive on Mercury and bear no ill will towards humans.
Mercurian Energy Beasts
The other sapient lifeforms on Mercury are the Mercurian energy beasts. As their name suggests, these creatures have quite a fearsome appearance. They are gigantic, made of lava, and have huge beard-like fronds. However, again, they are actively benevolent.
Venusians
With five arms, five legs, and twelve eyes on stalks, Venusians were masters of martial arts, and taught the Doctor a form of Aikido. They are capable of absorbing memories by eating brains. They are said to have gone extinct due to Venus’s global warming.
Wispies
These gaseous creatures are made of the Venusian atmosphere - perhaps they even are the atmosphere.
Cytherians
Also known as Thraskins or Plinge, Cytherians look like lemurs, but they’re the size of humans and more intelligent. Cytherians were responsible for the climate change that killed the Venusians and birthed the Wispies. Unlike the Venusians, the Cytherians managed to survive the cataclysm due to their mastery of cryogenics. When humanity terraformed Venus, the Cytherians awoke and were enslaved, until the Doctor freed them.
Merpeople
Earth is home to multiple intelligent aquatic humanoids. The Third Doctor encountered the Carpanthans, who deliberately hide themselves away from terrestrial civilisations. But far more interesting are the merpeople. They prefer “merrows”, but humanity fixates on the image of the mermaid far too much for the preferred terminology to ever catch on. Merrows are the creatures of legend: half fish, half human. They can breath the air and have no difficulties talking outside of the water. A mermaid called Magda was the mother of the Time Lord known as the Doctor - he was, after all, half-human on his mother’s side.
Tuskens
Descended from pigs, Tuskens very rapidly evolved into a fully sapient species due to the intervention of the Doctor, who taught them how to speak English.
Dolphins
In the Whoniverse, dolphins are as smart as humans, and are capable of two-way communication with the help of assistive technology. They can also survive on land through the use of robotic spacesuits. Dolphins have colonised aquatic worlds throughout the Milky Way.
Sidhe
The Sidhe are multidimensional beings who resemble Tolkien’s Elves. They are responsible for most paranormal phenomena on Earth, but largely keep to themselves. Their greatest intervention in human history was fighting against the Nazis in WWII due to the threat that Nazism posed to their realm.
The Silence
Although they were originally a hostile invasion force, the Silence lived on Earth for generations. They were able to live on the planet undetected due to their antimemetic properties - they were wiped from a person’s memory as soon as they were outside their vision cone. The first Silence were genetically modified Catholic priests designed to hear confession. If we accept that white people can be Americans, we must surely accept the Silence as Earthlings?
The Forest of Cheem
At the other end of the scale, the Forest of Cheem are sentient bipedal plants. They evolved from Earth’s rainforests. They’re from Earth’s genetic stock, but they’re also aliens.
Terrae
Before the Moon became a moon, it was the planet Theia. Like the Earth Reptiles, the Terrae, who lived on Theia, were worried when they foresaw Theia colliding with the Earth. They hibernated beneath Theia’s surface, and were only disturbed when humans mined for helium on the Moon. Their corpses turn to a purple dust, which humans consumed as a recreational drug.
Lunaries
After the Reptiles made it to space, but before the humans did, the Lunese formed a colony on the Moon. They were an insectoid species who evolved on Earth and formed diplomatic relations with every nation of Europe in the late 16th century, bringing the ambassadors to the Moon, which was full of Earth life.
Lizard Kings
What, you thought there were only sapient reptiles on Earth? No, no - Mondas has its own reptiles, both aquatic and terrestrial. The Lizard Kings were even thought to, paradoxically, have helped to bring about the Cybermen by sending an augmented ape forward in time to Mondas’s future. The Cybermen have an obsession with the Lizard Kings, but have never found any alive.
The Flood
“The Waters of Mars” introduced the Flood - a waterborne parasite that seemed to possess intelligence. It was able to operate machinery and successfully lay siege to a Mars base. It is thought that the Flood was buried in Mars’ ice by the Ice Warriors as a desperate final defence.
Cerulians
Now long extinct, the Cerulians lived on the dwarf planet Ceres between Mars and Jupiter. They had a two-caste society, divided between Masters and Scribes (slaves). Eventually, Masters trained Scribes to spend their whole lives flattering the Masters, and the Masters came to enjoy it. Neither caste noticed when Ceres was hit by an asteroid, eradicating life on Ceres.
Fendahl
History keeps repeating itself in the Solar System. Before Ceres, there was Planet 5 - a planet variously known as Minerva, Hestia, or Asteris, but usually just called Planet 5. In the early days of the Solar Sustem, this planet was home to the Star People, who created the Fendahl: a species where each individual contained thirteen separate parts with their own intelligence. Like on Ceres (and indeed Mars - the Ice Warriors were originally slaves), the Fendahl were intended to be a slave race, but they proved to have telepathic powers strong enough for them to consume the psychic energy of all non-Fendahl life on Planet 5. This caused a “rare” intervention in the outside world by the Time Lords, who feared that the Fendahl were threats to life in the universe. They were probably correct - the Fendahl were capable of making Great Old Ones like Fenric turn and run in fear. The Time Lords placed Planet 5 in a time loop, making it completely invisible and inaccessible. Some theorise that the planet broke up into the Asteroid Belt - which, of course, contains Ceres...
Europans
A race of amphibious insects evolved on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. Unfortunately, in the 20th century climate change nearly caused their extinction. Colony ships flew out to other worlds, but the only known success landed on Earth. The Third Doctor helped them form an Earth colony... but then time was rewritten, and the more cynical Seventh Doctor was sent to help UNIT instead. This unfortunately ended with UNIT killing all the Europans.
Vogans
The Vogans live on Voga, a former planet made entirely of gold. Early in their history, the Vogans were visited by a Vampire Hunter named Rassilon, and their society thus mirrors Gallifreyan society in many ways. They have grey skin, white hair, and high, domed foreheads.
Voga was of great interest to the Cybermen, who possessed a fatal weakness to gold. The Cybermen tried to blast Voga out of existence (which would not have destroyed the gold, but who said Cybermen were clever?). They only succeeded in sending Voga spiralling through space. The Vogans hid underground, and emerged when Voga settled in a stable orbit around Jupiter. I would point out that this makes Voga one of four bodies in the Solar System to dramatically change its orbit after evolving sapient life, and one of two to become a Moon of a larger planet. It also makes the Vogans at least the tenth species to go into hibernation following a calamity, most of which did it underground.
Waro
Aside from the Fendahl, the Waro were the solar species who were most hostile to humanity. Short goblin-like creatures with huge bat ears and terrible tempers, Waro were native to Neptune’s largest moon, Triton.
Siccati
Lastly, the Siccati evolve on Sedna. Never heard of Sedna? No, nor has anyone else. Sedna is a trans-Neptunian object which Gary Russell was sure would be named the Tenth Planet.
The Siccati were a race of bohemians, dedicated to art above all else. As Sedna is tiny, freezing, and has an irregular orbit, the Siccati relocated to floating cities in the atmosphere of Neptune.
Conclusion
The Solar System is weird. I have skimmed over some species, but there have been:
- Three instances of a species creating a slave race which leads to their destruction.
- Ten species who have hibernated (mostly underground) to escape a calamity.
- Four species who have been disturbed by humanity when hibernating underground, causing conflict between them and humans. One race, the Cytherians, were even enslaved by humanity.
- At least three different origins for the Moon (Theia colliding with Earth, Mercury’s twin planet that sent Mondas off into space/scared the Silurians, an egg).
- Four bodies being expelled from their orbits after evolving sapient life - the Moon/Theia and Mondas from within the Solar System, and Voga and Skaro (yes, that Skaro) from outside it.
- Multiple aquatic societies.
- Multiple species said to have inspired the human myth of fairies.
Earth’s solar system is weird. How weird is the rest of the universe?

• Battle of Madagascar
The Battle of Madagascar was the British campaign to capture the Vichy French-controlled island Madagascar during World War II.
Following the Japanese conquest of Southeast Asia east of Burma by the end of February 1942, submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy were moving freely throughout the north and eastern expanses of the Indian Ocean. In March 1942, Japanese aircraft carriers conducted the Indian Ocean raid upon shipping in the Bay of Bengal and bases in Colombo and Trincomalee in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). This raid drove the British Eastern Fleet out of the area and they were forced to relocate to a new base at Kilindini, near Mombasa, in Kenya. The move made the British fleet more vulnerable to attack. The possibility of Japanese naval forces using forward bases in Madagascar had to be addressed. The potential use of these facilities particularly threatened Allied merchant shipping. If the Imperial Japanese Navy's submarines were able to utilise bases on Madagascar, Allied lines of communication would be affected across a region stretching from the Pacific and Australia, to the Middle East and as far as the South Atlantic.
On December 17th, 1941, Vice Admiral Fricke, Chief of Staff of Germany's Maritime Warfare Command (Seekriegsleitung), met Vice Admiral Naokuni Nomura, the Japanese Naval Attaché, in Berlin to discuss the delimitation of respective operational areas between the German Kriegsmarine and Imperial Japanese Navy forces. At another meeting on March 27th ,1942, Fricke stressed the importance of the Indian Ocean to the Axis powers and expressed the desire that the Japanese begin operations against the northern Indian Ocean sea routes. Fricke further emphasized that Ceylon, the Seychelles, and Madagascar should have a higher priority for the Axis navies. By April, the Japanese announced to Fricke that they intended to commit four or five submarines and two auxiliary cruisers for operations in the western Indian Ocean between Aden and the Cape of Good Hope, but they refused to disclose their plans for operations against Madagascar and Ceylon.
The Allies had heard the rumours of Japanese plans for the Indian Ocean, the British Chiefs of Staff discussed the possibility that the Vichy government might cede the whole of Madagascar to Japan, or alternatively permit the Japanese Navy to establish bases on the island. British naval advisors urged the occupation of the island as a precautionary measure. On December 16th, General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French in London, sent a letter to the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, in which he also urged a Free French operation against Madagascar. Churchill recognised the risk of a Japanese-controlled Madagascar to Indian Ocean shipping, particularly to the important sea route to India and Ceylon, and considered Madagascar's ports as the strategic key to Japanese influence. By March 12th, 1942, Churchill had been convinced of the importance of such an operation and the decision was reached that the planning of the invasion of Madagascar would begin in earnest. It was agreed that the Free French would be explicitly excluded from the operation.
On the 14th, Force 121 was constituted under the command of Major-General Robert Sturges of the Royal Marines with Rear-Admiral Edward Syfret being placed in command of naval Force H and the supporting sea force. The operation was planned to commence around April 30th,1942. This was to be the first British amphibious assault since the disastrous landings in the Dardanelles twenty-seven years earlier. The task was Operation Ironclad, it would include Allied naval, land and air forces. The Allied naval contingent consisted of over 50 vessels, drawn from Force H, the British Home Fleet and the British Eastern Fleet, commanded by Syfret. The landing force included the 29th Independent Infantry Brigade Group, No 5 (Army) Commando, and two brigades of the 5th Infantry Division, the latter en route to India with the remainder of their division.
Following many reconnaissance missions by the SAAF (South African Air Force), the first wave of the British 29th Infantry Brigade and No. 5 Commando landed in assault craft on May 5th, 1942. Follow-up waves were by two brigades of the 5th Infantry Division and Royal Marines. All were carried ashore by landing craft to Courrier Bay and Ambararata Bay, just west of the major port of Diego-Suarez, at the northern tip of Madagascar. Air cover was provided mainly by Fairey Albacore and Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers which attacked Vichy shipping. They were supported by Grumman Martlets fighters from the Fleet Air Arm. The defending Vichy forces, led by Governor General Armand Léon Annet, included about 8,000 troops, of whom about 6,000 were Malagasy tirailleurs (colonial infantry). A large proportion of the rest were Senegalese. Between 1,500 and 3,000 Vichy troops were concentrated around Diego-Suarez.
The beach landings met with virtually no resistance and these troops seized Vichy coastal batteries and barracks. The 17th Infantry Brigade, after toiling through mangrove swamp and thick bush took the town of Diego-Suarez taking a hundred prisoners. The 29th Independent Brigade, headed towards the French naval base of Antisarane. With assistance from six Valentines and six Tetrarch light tanks of B Special Service Squadron they advanced 21 miles overcoming light resistance with bayonet charges. Antisarane itself was heavily defended with trenches, two redoubts, pillboxes. On the morning of May 6th, 1942 a frontal assault on the defences failed with the loss of three Valentines and two Tetrarchs. Another assault by the South Lancashires worked their way around the defences but bad terrain meant they were broken up into groups. Nevertheless, they swung behind the Vichy line and caused chaos. The radio station and a barracks were seized, in all 200 prisoners were taken.
With the French defence highly effective, the deadlock was broken when the old destroyer HMS Anthony dashed straight past harbour defences and landed fifty Royal Marines from Ramillies amidst the Vichy rear area. The marines secured the French artillery command post along with its barracks and the naval depot. At the same time troops of the 17th Infantry Brigade had broken through the defences and were soon marching in the town. The Vichy defence was broken, although substantial Vichy forces withdrew to the south. Hostilities continued at a low level for several months. After May 19th, 1942 two brigades of the 5th Infantry Division were transferred. By June 1942, the 22nd (East Africa) Brigade Group arrived on Madagascar. On September 10th, 1942 the 29th Brigade and 22nd Brigade Group made an amphibious landing at Majunga, another port on the west coast of the island. No. 5 Commando spearheaded the landing and faced machine gun fire but despite this they stormed the quayside, took control of the local post office, stormed the governor's residence and raised the Union Jack.
the Allies intended to re-launch the offensive ahead of the rainy season. Progress was slow for the Allied forces. In addition to occasional small-scale clashes with Vichy forces, they also encountered scores of obstacles erected on the main roads by Vichy soldiers. The Allies eventually captured the capital, Tananarive, without much opposition, and then the town of Ambalavao, but the devoutly Vichy Governor Annet escaped. Eight days later a British force set out to seize Tamatave. Heavy surf interfered with the operation. As HMS Birmingham's launch was heading to shore it was fired at by French shore batteries and promptly turned around. Birmingham then opened her guns up on the shores batteries and within three minutes the French hauled up the white flag. Tamatave fell into British hands. The last major action took place in October, at Andramanalina, a U-shaped valley with the meandering Mangarahara River where an ambush was planned for British forces by Vichy troops. The King's African Rifles split into two columns and marched around the 'U' of the valley and met Vichy troops in the rear and then ambushed them. The Vichy troops suffered heavy losses which resulted in 800 of them surrendering.
An armistice was signed in Ambalavao on November 6th, 1942, and Annet surrendered two days later. The Allies suffered about 500 casualties in the landing at Diego-Suarez, and 30 more killed and 90 wounded in the operations which followed September 1942. With Madagascar in Allied hands, they established military and naval installations across the island. The island was crucial for the rest of the war. Its deep water ports were vital to control the passageway to India and the Persian corridor, and this was now beyond the grasp of the Axis. This was the first large-scale operation of World War II by the Allies combining sea, land, and air forces. In the makeshift Allied planning of the war's early years, the invasion of Madagascar held a prominent strategic place. Free French General Paul Legentilhomme was appointed High Commissioner for Madagascar.

Dylan Meir | Twenty Two; Survivor
House: Torren Security Class: 2 Status: Infected - Praeteria Alignment: New Wave Reformists
History
Dylan was an average middle child in a less-than-average household. Her parents weren’t “family people”; her mother didn’t want anything to do with children and her father’s work made him travel too often to take care of himself, much less Dylan. They also hated each other, which tends to throw a wrench into the foundation of a loving family.
Dylan’s parents got divorced, and at the age of five, she was foisted onto the farm of her extended family in the outback of Queensland. It was on acres and acres of land—more than large enough for all the people who lived there: two great uncles, seven uncles, five aunts, nine cousins, and two second cousins. In the space of a few weeks Dylan went from being an only child in the city to a middle child in what could generously be described as the middle of nowhere. She flourished.
Most of her relatives worked on the farm herding and tending cattle. However, her great uncle Henry worked as a ranger at the nearby wildlife park. He often took Dylan out riding with him through the outback. On those trips she developed a deep appreciation for nature; she learned to read tracks, how to be quiet and patient, how to survive. When she was older, she and her cousins would often take the horses and go camping out in those wilds— never far from the ranch, of course, but far enough that they felt alone out on the empty plains. She also sometimes accompanied her older relatives on cattle drives. They’d spend weeks out in the open, sleeping under the stars with no one but each other for company.
The family was close knit, but being one of the middle children meant it was all too easy to get lost. Dylan constantly competed with her cousins for attention, for recognition, for the last drumstick at the dinner table. She lost count of the number of times she’d been called by the wrong name; sometimes the other person wouldn’t even realize they had made a mistake. Sometimes she wouldn’t bother correcting them. It didn’t help either that the ranch was so far from any sort of town. Trips into civilization were rare, and even rarer were the times Dylan tagged along. The flatbed could only fit so many people, and it was a race each time to get a spot. She and her cousins didn’t have a formal school; they were taught by their older kin when they had the time. The ranch was her classroom, and her aunts and uncles and cousins were her teachers.
Of course her place on the ranch, and the invisibility that came with it, was better than living with her parents. Dylan visited her mother only twice, and both times she wanted the visit to be over as fast as possible. Her father came around more often, but it was like talking to a complete stranger. He knew nothing about her life; sometimes he didn’t even know how old she was. He stopped coming in her teens. No, compared to the life she could’ve had, she was more than grateful. She loved the cattle and the horses, and all her ever-growing family, and her home.
That home was destroyed when she was 16. Some of the smaller meteors destroyed one of the paddocks and part of the house. Other bits of debris landed out in the dry scrubland. Fires were a part of life, but this time there was no stopping them. The Meirs fled before the flames, taking everything— their cattle, their horses, as many belongings as they could carry. The last time Dylan saw her home, it was backed by an orange glow on the horizon. They arrived weeks later in a camp outside of Brisbane. The fires there had been less severe, countered by fierce flooding. The city itself had been evacuated; almost everyone in the camps had come in from the west. It was there that Dylan and her family learned where the meteors had come from and exactly what damage they’d wrought. With nowhere else to go, the Meirs decided to rejoin what was left of civilization. The family went to work rebuilding structures and redistributing supplies. Dylan lost herself to the work and the crowd of survivors trying to remake their lives.
Looters had been a problem almost since D-day, especially bands of Infected that roamed the wastes. And as they came again and again, the camp rallied to throw them back. But when Dylan was eighteen, the looters banded together for a massive assault. With their combined numbers and weapons, the small defence the camp could muster was no match for them. Chaos swept through the base. Everyone was running, shouting, screaming. Dylan found herself pressed into a corner, holding her second cousin tightly as he cried against her shoulder for his mother. The looters were coming; she could hear the guns, the wild cries of delight. There was nothing she could do except pray. There would be no running, no hiding from them. She held her breath as the looters charged, hooting and hollering. Some of them looked right at her, eyes passing over like she was a shadow. And then they continued on, reigning devastation.
The camp in ruins, Dylan and her family had no choice but to move South. There were rumours of a larger camp there, one with defendable walls and connections to the outside world. Before they left, they helped to bury the lost members of the camp, including Dylan’s Great-Uncle Henry. In the days and weeks following the attack, she felt sick. Dirty. The Infected had destroyed her camp and killed her family, and she was just like them. She didn’t even try to control her power. It didn’t take long for the rest of her family to notice, and although they assured her that she was still a Meir, still part of the clan, it wasn’t hard to notice the way they distanced themselves from her, whether purposefully, or not.
Dylan Today
The Meirs were welcomed with open arms at Colony 30, near Penrith. They were given food, a place to stay, jobs and chores to perform. Dylan became a scout, spending days wandering the decimated city and further into the outback, looking for survivors. She became an expert at it; using her abilities to spy on larger camps, slowly bringing in stragglers to the safety of the Colony. She spent days, sometimes as long as two weeks alone. It was better than being at the increasingly crowded base, invisible even when she didn’t use her powers. She withdrew more and more from her family and they withdrew from her until, years later, when the Colony offered free relocation for anyone who wanted it, she eagerly volunteered. Colony 30 was one of only two in all of Australia, and so over population was a constant and increasing issue, especially after the purging of the wastelands. Pockets of clans and communities had been popular in the country, and when the NWRF rose, soon there were too many people to house comfortably in their Colonies... but so far, not enough resources to open a third just yet. But Dylan didn’t care where she went, as long as it was far away from Penrith.
Dylan arrived at Colony 22 less than a week ago, just after the storm had finally tapered, but she quickly secured a job working in the stables and the grounds—if only for something familiar to keep her busy and distracted. The walls of this colony were more confining than she was used to, but since she spent most of her time outside anyway, it was an acceptable tradeoff for safety. She also quickly found a home with the NWRF. In her eyes, the Infected were just a bomb waiting to go off. The powers they were given were too dangerous for any one person to have; just like any other weapon, they should be regulated with extreme care or better yet, taken away completely. For the time being, she did her best to use her ability as little as possible.
Outside of her hesitancy to use her Praeteria, Dylan is fairly friendly and outgoing. Coming from a large family, she’s at home in crowds and wide open spaces. She spends most of her free time in the lounge or the gaming grounds, although she also enjoys browsing the Hub and trading for the occasional contraband. She has more mixed feelings about training and the Games; she excels at athletics like running and wrestling, but she’s apprehensive about anything to do with her powers— even training. When she can get away with it, she plays hooky on her infection training in favour of doing literally anything else. She avoids associating with most Infected too; although she doesn’t snub them entirely, the pride many of them take in their powers makes her more than a little uncomfortable.

Search online Honey bee Removal Service near me for better result.
Beehives in gardens or trees are less dangerous and attractive, but when they are found in or near the kitchen, the garage, or areas where your kids play outside, they become horrifying. If a beehive has been located close to your home or place of employment, it is likely upsetting and worrying you already and observing bee hives can be unnerving you and the only thing you search on the internet for Honey bee Removal Service near me.
Whether you like bees or hate them, the sight of a colony can be very alarming. However, they are crucial to the environment. Similar to how hornets, wasps, or yellow jackets are crucial parts of any garden's ecosystem, you don't want them swarming around in your place.
The best way to remove a beehive by yourself
Even if there are various safe removal techniques for honeybees, it is still advised to speak with a professional. There are even possibilities for free bee hive removal, Just type "honey bee removal service near me" and find them online. There is a tonne of websites dedicated to the relocation and removal of live bees. But it is not advisable to go for free bee hive removal because there are many precautionary measures that need to take which a paid professional can only be good at.
Contact a professional for bee hive removal.
Bees commonly construct their nests in hidden spaces like soffits, wall cavities, water metres, utility boxes, and under decks. You might have to contend with a swarm of hostile bees guarding their hive if it's a location you need to return to frequently. Additionally, occasionally, their nesting habits and huge colonies can result in dampness problems, drywall holes, insulation damage, and wax and honey stains. The best defence in an attack is to enter a building or vehicle and shut the door. If you are allergic to bee stings, you should never try to approach them. A bee's sting produces a scent trail that can be detected, luring other bees to sting. Bees can become aggressive once they sting, and the attack might soon intensify. Therefore, it is best to hire a professional who can offer the service for Live Bee removal. Just search "honey bee removal service near me" online and get a tonne of websites.
What Does Live Bee Removal Involve?
Certified bee eradication specialists use a number of approaches, depending on their expertise, individual preferences, and the location and behaviour of the particular colony. The beekeeper will first need to accurately find the nest; you might even see him or her take out a stethoscope, thermal scanner, or tiny drill at this stage. Finding the nest's location before getting entry can help to minimise structural damage.
Experts might need to drill a hole in a wall or other structure to gain access to the colony. Before utilising vacuums to gently suction them up for transfer, some individuals use smoke to remove honey bee colonies. Although this approach isn't usually the most humane because stress makes bees more agitated. Insisting on the colony's relocation into a mobile hive is a less intrusive and more sympathetic trap-out technique. Once they leave their new temporary home, the bees are unable to get back to the old nest. You must be very patient because it could take the colony up to two months to transfer completely.

With the compliments of, The Directorate General Public Relations,
Government of the Punjab, Lahore Ph: 99201390.
No.1374 /QU/RANA
HANDOUT (A)
LAHORE, August 24:
Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar laid the foundation stone of the signal-free Shahkam Chowk flyover project valuing Rs.4.23 billion to ease the movement of 1.25 lakh vehicles daily. This 606 meters long, two-sided with each side having three lanes project will be completed in 10 months while Rs. 39.5 crore is saved in land acquisition and transparent tendering. Under this project, a 6-kilometre long defence road will also be dualized from labour colony to Multan road along with the construction of 2, 2 small bridges at the Hydiara Drain and canal.
Addressing the ceremony, the CM gave the credit of the composite development process and achievements of targets to PM Imran Khan adding that the Punjab government is following the policy of balanced development so that everyone could enjoy the benefits. Improving the quality of life of the impecunious strata through the creation of opportunities is a priority agenda; he stressed and vowed that everyone will be given the right of development along with equitable access to healthcare and education facilities. The CM said the government was giving attention to providing facilities to the overcrowded areas adding that improvement of roads' infrastructure is a priority agenda. The government has started development schemes in neglected areas of the provincial metropolis while identifying public needs, he continued. The CM maintained the Shahkam Chowk is a central point to connect different areas of the city. However, the CM regretted that the traffic was often clogged due to lack of space. The CM maintained the government has completed several projects in Lahore including the Lal Shahbaz Qalandar underpass, entrance point at Thokar Niaz Baig, a pedestrians' bridge at Jinnah Hospital and construction of an underground water tank for rainwater. Similarly, the Miyawaki urban forests were being developed at different points in Lahore, he appended. An organised master plan 2050 'center of civilization and prosperous Lahore' was being devised under LDA's supervision to develop the provincial metropolis according to future needs, he added. While talking about the development performance of the PTI government, the CM said a turbo roundabout will be built at Shahdara Chowk to resolve traffic gridlock by raising separate passages for heavy and routine traffic. Work on Sheranwala gate flyover and Ferozepur Road Gulab Devi underpass projects is in progress while another underpass will be constructed at Samanabad Chowk, he said. Meantime, three parking plazas were being assembled at Sheranwala Gate, Masti Gate and Ek Moriya Pul to park more than one thousand vehicles, he told. The previous government launched different projects, excluding the orange line metro train project, valuing Rs.67 billion in Lahore during the third year of its tenure while the PTI government devised development schemes worth Rs.85 billion for Lahore in its third year, he added. The CM asserted that the Ravi River Urban Development Project and Central Business District are game-changer initiatives to transform Lahore into a world-class city. Along with the establishment of a children health university, a mother and child block will also be completed with Rs.7 billion at Ganga Ram Hospital, he added. The CM announced a new general hospital will be built with Rs.14 billion and a surface water treatment plant will be established at Mehmood Booti Shahdara and Shadbagh with Rs.10 billion. Another surface water treatment plant was being set up at the BRB Canal, he said. Meanwhile, the CM continued that work is in progress on the water disposal project from Larechs colony to Gulshan Ravi, rehabilitation of historical heritage at Lahore Fort and 'dilkash Lahore project' to highlight the multifarious beauty of the historical city. A tower facility will be constructed near the high court for the legal fraternity and phase-II of MPAs' hostel will be completed with Rs.3.44 billion, he added. A water supply project for 3 major union councils in Lahore will be completed with Rs.1.65 billion; the CM said and disclosed that a project has been devised to relocate markets around ring road for maintaining smooth traffic flow in the city. New emergency blocks consisting of 400, 400 beds each will be constructed in Services Hospital and Jinnah Hospital along with the construction of hostel in Services Hospital, he continued. While giving further details about the development performance of the PTI government, the CM said construction of multistorey parking plaza was being started near civil secretariat, construction of revenue academy and revamping/extension of Mazar Bibi Pak Daman is in progress, in addition, to start of prison complex Lahore, women development office complex at Sabzazar and repair and maintenance of Sagian Road. Food and drug lab and local government academy have been established; he said and revealed that electric buses will be introduced on different routes in the provincial metropolis. Similarly, a bus information and schedule system will be introduced in addition to the construction of 200 bus stops shelters. A world-class bus terminal will also be built at Thokar Niaz Beg, he added. The CM said 35000 apartments will be constructed through LDA City Naya Pakistan Apartments project to provide a roof to the general public and small scale employees. Construction of 4000 apartments is in progress in the first phase, he told. The government has devised a 360 billion rupees district development package for composite development in the province, the CM maintained. The CM said a network of shelter homes and almonries were being established to accommodate the unattended segments of the society while recruiting 10000 police officials and provision of 600 new vehicles. It is satisfying that Lahore police have resolved all high-profile cases in a record period and the PTI-led government has also completed the CTD headquarters project, he noted. He said the scope of LDA has been restricted to Lahore city only and it has been further decided to divide Lahore into new administrative units to improve service delivery and work is in progress actively. The government has made a 66 per cent increase in development budget, 185 per cent in health, 286 per cent in higher education, 29 per cent in school education, 306 in agriculture and 307 per cent rise in industries budget while 24.7 per cent more recoveries have been made in PRA's dues, he added. The new Punjab assembly building has been completed and the government has keenly noted problems of every area while being committed to providing resources for the solution of the problems, he added. I monitored the progress and the ongoing schemes for Lahore will be completed within the next two years to provide added facilities to the citizens, concluded the CM. Select an ideal packer and mover to relocate your home and office
Setting up your home is very cumbersome and tiring. It involves a lot of effort to set things up the way you want, when you shift to a new house and when you are about to leave or shift you have the burden of getting your things back. This work is really difficult and can get messed up until you plan the whole activity. In such surroundings you definitely need to make a checklist to help you to complete the task smoothly. You can definitely get advice from people who are used to moving and packers their base regularly. Such people certainly, from earlier experiences, guide what is actually to be done.
It is important to write everything in your diary and note the details of all items before packing them in a box. Next you have to allocate numbers and symbols to each box so that the items are not mistaken. This will enable you to identify each box. However, depending on your store and goods, you will have to plan the number of boxes so that you can fit all your items in it. In addition to planning on the number of boxes, you should make sure that you have additional boxes to meet emergency or last minute needs. Apart from the above you will also need a lot of packing material in the form of plastic, bubble wrapping, cardboard, newspapers and thermocol.
However it is always ideal to select a mover and packer to assist you in the transfer. You can look in your yellow pages for an address or even go through newspaper advertisements to find a good packer and mover. Online search will also help in this regard. You can also follow the guidelines given below to choose your movers. Asking your friends or relatives will always give you an honest opinion. They may be familiar with movers and packers who are their friends, co-workers and local estate agents. Also selecting a proposer that is always located nearby gives you that protection. If online you find a proposer under any problem or problems, do not select that proposer. You should not choose blindly. You should investigate him thoroughly and investigate fraud cases against him. Also you have to sign an agreement that the goods will be safely moved. You should also check on the insurance cover provided by the company. This will ensure that the property is taken care of in case of any accident. Moving from one state to another is more painful.
If an inter-state move happens, you should not compromise on investment in a proposer. In addition to the fee you pay, additional expenses and the proposer must know before choosing. You have to keep in mind that all procedures must be followed in case of an incident. With so many options, choosing the right packers and movers in Delhi will not be a problem. In the end the movers should be honored for good work. In the end do not fail to collect all the bills that the movers have to pay.

These are the 15 hottest destinations billionaires are traveling to in 2019, Defence Online

The wealthy are traveling everywhere from France and Turkey to India and Japan in 2019.

Investing in travel is becoming an increasingly popular way for the ultra-rich to signify their status – and they’re extending it far beyond the classic idea of a vacation.
Nowadays, the super-rich are taking months-long, multimillion-dollar trips to recharge or reconnect with family because they’re often burnt out, Business Insider’s Katie Warren previously reported. That can take shape in the form of extreme adventures, luxurious getaways, and educational excursions.
But just where are these billionaires headed?
Defence Online teamed up with boutique luxury travel agency Original Travel, which plans trips for high-net-worth individuals, to find out the hottest spots the elite are spending their money on in 2019. They based this ranking on the number of bookings and performance; the latter was assessed by feedback, their expertise, and client inquiries.
Turns out, billionaires have a taste for adventure in 2019. While a few classics made the list, such as Britain and France, far-flung countries – from Rwanda to Myanmar – made an appearance on the list, too.
Keep reading to see where the rich are getting their passports stamped this year.
15. Montenegro

Lesser-known than neighbors Croatia and Greece, the tiny slice of Adriatic coastline that is Montenegro has previously lacked high-quality accommodation (other than the Aman network) to rival its fjord landscapes, Tom Barber, co-founder of Original Travel, told Defence Online.
“Montenegro is set for a luxury upgrade in 2019 with the Chedi Lustica Bay newly opened and One & Only opening its first resort in Europe next year with Portonovi in Boka Bay,” he said.
14. Oman

Defence Online previously reported that Oman is the next big destination for luxury travelers. Its peak travel season runs from October to April.
“Luxury brands like Anantara Hotels, which has already opened two resorts there, are claiming the country’s culture and unique topography are a huge draw for travelers,” reported Sarah Jacobs.
13. France

Champagne, in particular, is France’s hottest destination right now, according to Barber. Belmond’s new Pivoine Champagne barge launched in 2018, and the recent opening of The Royal Champagne Hotel “injected a much-needed shot of luxury and style to the hotel offerings of the region,” he said.
He added: “From barge or hotel, we recommend arranging a private vineyard tour and tastings including a backstage at Bollinger experience, along with a make-your-own Champagne lesson and treehouse Champagne bar experience for a comprehensive immersion in the region.”
12. Great Britain

From the countryside to the city, there’s plenty on offer for a luxury holiday in Great Britain. Original Travel has been working on developing a network of tailor-made itineraries around the British Isles, beginning with London. The city is home to a number of luxury hotels including Claridge’s, The Connaught, and The Dorchester.
11. India

“India has always been one of our favorite destinations for an authentic travel experience, but in 2019 we’re honing in on the country’s spiritual specialism,” Barber said.
From January 15 to March 4, the ancient city of Haridwar in northern India played host to Ardh Kumbh Mela, the UNESCO-recognized largest spiritual festival in the world where Hindu devotees come to wash away their sins in the river’s holy water, Barber said. With Kumbh Mela festivals happening on rotation between four cities over the course of 12 years, 2019 started off strong for luxury travel to India.
10. Chile

Chile is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and scenic landscapes. It’s also a perfect spot for luxury seekers: Defence Online’s David Slotnick stayed at Easter Island’s primary all-inclusive luxury hotel, Explora Rapa Nui, and found his stay to be “phenomenal.”
“Less traditional luxury – no white tablecloth breakfasts served on your private balcony overlooking the ocean – Explora offers the luxury of being able to let go of planning and logistics without sacrificing choice or personalization,” he wrote.
9. Turkey

The gateway to the Turkish Riviera was recently reopened after British Airways resumed its direct route to Dalaman, according to Barber.
“With the Turkish lira having dropped in value, new hotel openings, and things stabilizing a little politically, the Turquoise Coast of Turkey has never looked more appealing,” he said. “With the Turkish Aegean back on the map, its turquoise seas, secret beaches, and exclusive bars and clubs are peaking the interests of glamorous beach-goers usually resigned to the same old European break.”
Barber called the south-westerly beach town of Kaplankaya a “place to watch,” as well as the Bodrum peninsula, which has an array of new hotel offerings.

8. The Seychelles

The dozens of islands across the Indian Ocean known as the Seychelles are one of the most requested spots in Original Travel’s diving division.
Seychelles’ North Island, in particular, is a luxurious getaway. “Set in the middle of the Indian Ocean, this ultra-exclusive hideaway attracts A-listers and royals,” wrote Maxine Albert.
7. Myanmar

Historic Myanmar offers plenty for a luxury holiday – several luxurious boat trips along the Irrawaddy between Yangon and Bagan as well as Ngapali Beach, an elite beach retreat, according to Original Travel.
Yangon’s highlight is the Schwedagon Pagoda, where Original Travel arranges for visitors to take part in a robe-offering ceremony with the temple’s monks.
6. Rwanda

Rwanda was named a new African luxury destination to watch in 2018 by Luxury Travel Mag. The destination is all about nature and wildlife, home to three national parks: Akagera, Nyungwe, and the Volcanoes National Park.
The latter is the perfect spot – and one of the few remaining places – to see mountain gorillas in the wild, according to Original Travel.
5. Bhutan

Unspoiled Bhutan is ideal for the adventurous luxury traveler – the country is made for trekking, according to Original Travel. The company has arranged for treks to many of Bhutan’s monasteries, mountain-biking along 12,000-foot mountain passes, and participation in archery tournaments.
4. Colombia

As of March 2019, Original Travel has already received the amount of Colombia bookings that they received for all of 2018.
“Experiencing a renaissance in luxury travel, Colombia’s breathtaking jungle landscapes and colonial cities deserve more recognition,” Barber said.
“Opening this November is the brand new and exclusive Corocora Camp, located inside a remote private reserve on the vast plains of the Llanos Orientales region, a two-hour drive (or 30-minute helicopter ride) from Yopal,” he added. “This is the first camp of its kind in Colombia with safari-style tents and a wildlife-focused camping experience.”
3. Iceland

Original Travel’s 2019 Iceland bookings are set to double their 2018 rate. That’s not surprising, considering it was previously named one of the top places to travel in 2017 by Insider.
Many visitors travel to the island to see the Northern Lights. The ION Luxury Adventure Hotel in Iceland’s Golden Circle was specifically designed for optimal Aurora Borealis viewing. Beyond that, there are “Crystal Caves,” massive waterfalls, Icelandic horses, and black sand beaches to explore.
2. Japan

Japan’s main island, Honshu, offers several luxury travel highlights, from bathing hot spring snow monkeys to skiing in Nagano, according to Original Travel.
There are also plenty of ways to enjoy luxury travel in Japan by train – like The Twilight Express Mizukaze with a top room that costs $22,000 for a two-night, three-day trip or the Skiki-Shima train that boasts glass ceilings and suites.

1. Egypt

Original Travel’s 2019 bookings for Egypt are set to triple last year’s bookings. According to Barber, there are two primary attractions fueling this trend.
The first is Steam Ship Sudan, a cruise that glides down the Nile between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at archaeological sites, temples, and tombs along the way.
The second is the Grand Egyptian Museum, relocated and newly built overlooking the pyramids of Giza. “The museum will house over 100,000 ancient Egyptian artifacts, many of which have never previously been shown in public and includes King Tutankhamun’s complete collection of over 50,000 artifacts,” Barber said. “Once complete, the museum will be the largest in the world devoted to a single civilization.”

Alexandria existed in a peculiar limbo. Egypt owned it; Britain controlled it. In 1936, with a well-judged combination of threats and bribery, the British had forced the Egyptian monarch, the dissolute young King Farouk, to sign a treaty of alliance, which permitted Britain to treat the place as just another outpost of Empire. The Admiralty quickly set about building up a dockyard and headquarters that could become the Royal Navy’s principal base in the event of war in the Mediterranean. Central to the entire British strategy was the island fortress of Malta. For centuries, he who occupied Malta dominated the whole Mediterranean. Lying 100 kilometres to the south-east of Sicily, midway between Gibraltar and Alexandria and therefore more or less in the centre of the Mediterranean, Malta was the lynchpin. It had been a British colony since 1800, and the Grand Harbour of the capital, Valletta, was the Royal Navy’s principal Mediterranean base in peacetime. The scandal was that Malta’s defences had been grievously neglected. When war with Italy broke out in 1940, the island had only a handful of anti-aircraft guns. The RAF maintained exactly three ancient Gloster Gladiator biplane fighters, which the cynics had nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity. And for all the grandeur of its ancient forts and ramparts, Malta was no longer tenable as a permanent home for warships for it lay within easy range of Italian bomber bases. This was what had forced the Mediterranean Fleet to relocate further east to Alexandria. The Battle for Malta would become one of the epic struggles of the war, stretching the Royal Navy to breaking point.
