ROWLAND S. HOWARD, Toronto, April Fool's Day, 1988.
Rowland S. Howard was one of a handful of my guitar heroes (a list that includes Andy Gill, Ricky Wilson, Keith Levene and Robert Quine.) This is probably why I made the effort to photograph Howard and his band when they came through town, despite not having an assignment or a venue where the photos would be published. I brought along my studio in a bag and found the same helpfully empty space behind the bar at the Silver Dollar Room, the same place where I'd photographed Lydia Lunch two months earlier. These three shoots I did early in 1988 were crucial and coincidentally connected as Howard worked with Lunch throughout his life (their collaborative "concept album" Honeymoon in Red had been released the year previous), as had Henry Rollins, the next subject in my ad hoc studio at the Silver Dollar, who would also work with Howard.
I found Rowland S. Howard to be polite and friendly, with impeccable manners - very different from the haunted-looking man who would stalk the stage chain-smoking in concert videos I'd seen of The Birthday Party of Crime & the City Solution. He was in town with These Immortal Souls, the band he'd formed with his brother Harry Howard, his girlfiend Genevieve McGuckin and drummer Epic Soundtracks (born Kevin Godfrey), but for some reason McGuckin didn't make the Toronto show, part of a tour supporting their first record, Get Lost (Don't Lie). I spent most of the three rolls of film I ran through my Mamiya C330 trying to get a decent portrait of Howard, but shot the band together on the last half of the third roll, where Epic is wearing a Black Flag t-shirt; These Immortal Souls were the first non-American band on the Flag's label, SST.
Rowland S. Howard smoked all through my shoot with him, which I spent trying to get something that captured his somewhat wasted elegance. My white backdrop, a painter's tarp, had taken on some impressive wrinkles while stuffed in the gym bag it lived in between shoots, and it's taken considerable skill and digital magic to get these shots to look as slick as I had imagined them while doing this shoot nearly forty years ago. In the end I think they capture a few different facets of Howard, who would be in poor health for many years after I met him, afflicted from Hepatitis C that would lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer and ultimately kill him in 2009, at just fifty. Epic Soundtracks would die suddenly in his London home in 1997, after recording several acclaimed solo albums. Autoluminescent, a documentary about Howard, would come out in 2011.

On May 2nd 1779 John Galt the Scottish novelist, was born in Greenock.
Galt was the son of a ship’s captain involved in trade to the West Indies. Sickly as a child, Galt was at first schooled at home, later attending grammar school at Irvine.
In 1789, the family moved to Greenock in Renfrewshire when Galt’s father became a ship-owner and in 1796 John began work as a clerk for a local firm. In 1803 and 1804 he found some published success as a poet when the Scots Magazine published part of his epic poem, ‘The Battle of Largs’. The poem was published in full in 1804, around the time its author moved to London in an attempt to become a businessman. In 1807 his article, ‘A Statistical Account of Upper Canada’, was published in The Philosophical Magazine, and in 1808 his main business partnership was declared bankrupt, though without Galt suffering liabilities.
In 1809 he studied law for a few months, entering Lincoln’s Inn, but then decided to travel around the Mediterranean where he met Lord Byron. In 1811, back in London, he published two volumes of his travels and a biography of Cardinal Wolsey, and became editor of the Political Review. In 1813 Galt married Elizabeth Tilloch and also published a sequel to his Mediterranean travels, Letters from the Levant. In 1814 he became editor of The New British Theatre and the following year gave up this position to become Secretary of the Royal Caledonian Asylum, a charity established by the Highland Society in London. In 1816, Galt published The Life and Studies of Benjamin West, a biography of the American painter who became President of the Royal Academy. In 1818 his tragedy, The Appeal, was staged in Edinburgh with a verse epilogue by Sir Walter Scott. Back in London in 1819, Galt began lobbying Parliament for the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal Company, though this first attempt failed. He also turned his hand to writing school textbooks under various pseudonyms. The following year his parliamentary efforts were successful and he was given a substantial reward by the canal company.
In 1821 The Ayrshire Legatees was published in monthly parts in the famous Blackwood’s Magazine, and in the same year Galt was engaged by a group of businessmen from Upper Canada, attracted by his lobbying reputation, to assist them in obtaining compensation from the government for losses sustained in the War of 1812.
Galt was a prime mover in founding the Canada Company whose Secretary he became; in 1825, he was one of five government commissioners sent to Canada on a fact-finding mission. Later that same year, Galt was granted the freedom of Irvine. In 1826, he was appointed superintendent of the Canada Company. He travelled via New York to the areas around modern Ontario including Toronto. In 1827 Galt established the towns of Guelph and Goderich but in 1829 he was recalled to London, dismissed from the Canada Company in June, committed to King’s Bench Prison for debt in July, and discharged in November.
Galt’s methods were subsequently vindicated because the Canada Company, following the patterns he had established, made profits from the 1830s until it was wound up in the 1950s. He was a good community builder but he laboured with little help, he alienated the reactionary establishment of Upper Canada and he failed to impress on his directors that the profits would accrue in the medium to long term.
In 1830, he wrote The Life of Lord Byron, who was a good friend, he also briefly became editor of The Courier, a London evening newspaper. In 1831, Bogle Corbet was published and Galt played an instrumental role in forming the British American Land Company (to do in Lower Canada what the Canada Company was doing in Upper Canada) and appointed its Secretary.
In 1832 Galt suffered the first of a series of strokes and in 1833 he published his Autobiography the following year he retired to Greenock where he lived quietly but continued to write articles, short stories, novellas and poems.
John Galt published over 70 fullworks of literature as well as many more serialised and shorter stories in publications, he died on 11 April 1839. He was buried with his parents in the New Burying Ground in Greenock (now called the Old Burying Ground).
His legacies include the city of Galt in Ontario, Canada, now part of Cambridge, named in his honour, in his home town of Greenock he is commemorated by the John Galt memorial fountain on the Esplanade, by a plaque at the old cemetery where he is buried and sheltered housing built next to the cemetery in 1988, on the site of the old Royal Hospital, is named John Galt House. In Edinburgh's old town he has a slab in Makars Court near the Writers Museum and in Guelph, Canada a historical plaque commemorates his role with the Canada Company in populating the Huron Tract, calling it "the most important single attempt at settlement in Canadian history"

How Relationships with Nature can Evolve to Offer us a Sense of Place, no matter where we are
I have a distinct memory of the time and place where nature became solidified as an important part of my lifestyle. Growing up, my family had a cottage on Lake Muskoka; it was on an island making it fairly isolated. The land beside our cottage was vacant, and I spent a lot of my childhood exploring the forest here. One summer, my best friend Maya and I were looking for salamanders after a huge storm. We came across an oak tree that had been uprooted in the storm. The tree was completely overturned, and there was a wall of tangled roots at the base of a 25 meter long trunk. For the rest of that summer, Maya and I spent all our time at that tree- we named the tree 'Oaklahoma,' and hung up a small flag we drew with crayons. Having made so many memories at this fallen tree, and spending the entire summer in the forest, I came to understand the importance of nature to ones identity.
Maya and I at the cottage
Growing up has changed the way I see nature. As a child, I saw nature as something to play in, something that would bring me joy. While it still serves this benefit, I now know that nature is something I can learn from and can use my knowledge to help conserve it. My relationship with nature has evolved into something much more. I try my best to enjoy nature without taking anything from it, and thoroughly utilize practices such as "Leave No Trace" and staying on marked trails. Studying wildlife biology has taught me the consequences and cascading effects of human disturbance to wildlife and natural spaces. I hope that as I continue my studies, my knowledge will take me even further in the preservation of nature, and I'm looking forward to sharing this knowledge on this blog.
While my first true "sense of place" occurred at the fallen oak tree at my cottage, I continue to feel this sense anytime I am in nature. Whether it's camping in some of Ontario's parks, hiking in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, or simply going for a walk in the park near my house, nature offers me a sense of peace and quiet that can sometimes be hard to come by in ordinary life.
While a "sense of place" can sometimes be associated with comfort, I also hope to establish this connection with nature even when outside my comfort zone. I recently moved from my childhood home in Toronto to the Town of Gravenhurst (only 10 minutes away from where our cottage and Oaklahoma used to be). While I had spent time in Gravenhurst before, moving into a residential house in the town centre was a large adjustment both from living in Toronto and having the cottage on the island. While I didn't miss the hustle and bustle of the big city, I struggled with feeling disconnected to nature since I was living in a suburb. It took some effort to get myself outside and exploring again. While I am no longer surrounded by nature, I only have to walk a short way to find myself at the waterfront, surrounded by wildlife.
I'd like to end this post with an important quote from the painter Robert Bateman:
"If you've got an eye for it, nature is everywhere."
Lake Muskoka

Transform Your Space: The Magic of Professional Interior Painting Services
Interior painting services are essential for giving your home or office a fresh look. The walls inside your space can impact the overall vibe. A new coat of paint can brighten a room and make it feel more welcoming. Whether you want to change the color or refresh the old one with Interior Painting, professional painters can help.
Why Hire an Interior Painting Service?
Hiring professionals for interior painting has many advantages. First, they have the right skills and tools. This ensures the job is done efficiently and to a high standard. Professionals also help you choose the right colors. They can suggest shades that suit your style and the room's function.
Another reason to hire experts is their attention to detail. They know how to prepare surfaces properly before painting, including sanding, filling holes, and applying primer. These steps result in a smooth and long-lasting finish. They also work quickly, saving you time and effort.
Steps in the Interior Painting Process
A professional interior painting service follows several steps. First, they prepare the room. This involves moving furniture, covering floors, and taping edges. Preparation ensures that everything is protected from paint splatters. Then, the painters clean and prime the walls. Priming helps the paint adhere better and last longer.
Once the walls are ready, the painting begins. Experts use high-quality brushes and rollers for a smooth application. After the first coat dries, they often apply a second coat for a rich finish. When the painting is complete, they clean up the space and remove any tape or coverings.
Benefits of Fresh Interior Paint
Painting your interiors has many benefits. Fresh paint can make a room feel new again, and it can also improve the mood and ambiance of your home. Lighter colors can make small spaces feel bigger, while darker shades can add depth and warmth.
Paint also protects your walls. Over time, walls collect dust, dirt, and grime. Painting covers up these imperfections and keeps your home looking clean. Additionally, interior paint can increase the value of your property. A well-painted home is more appealing to potential buyers.
How to Choose the Right Colors?
Choosing the right paint colors is important. The color you pick can influence the feel of a room. Lighter colors, like white or beige, create a calm and spacious atmosphere. Bright colors, like yellow or blue, can add energy to a space. For a cozy feel, darker shades like gray or navy work well.
It's also important to consider the room's purpose. Bedrooms often benefit from soothing colors, while living rooms look better with warmer tones. A professional painter can offer advice based on your preferences and the room's lighting.
Finding a Reliable Interior Painting Service
When looking for an interior painting service, research is key. Start by checking online reviews. A reputable company will have positive feedback from previous customers. You can also ask for recommendations from friends or family. Once you find a service, ask for a quote. This helps you compare prices and get the best deal.
Make sure the company you choose is licensed and insured. This protects you in case of accidents or damage. Experienced painters will have the necessary qualifications to handle your project with care. It's also helpful to ask for a portfolio of their past work. This gives you an idea of their style and quality.
Conclusion
Interior painting services in Toronto offer a simple way to transform your home. Professionals ensure that the job is done right and with minimal hassle. Whether updating one room or your entire house, a fresh coat of paint can make a big difference. Choose reliable painters, pick the perfect colors, and enjoy your newly painted space.

"CHARGE CURRAN ADMITS LOOTING BEVERLEY HOME," Toronto Star. April 24, 1934. Page 19 & 21. --- Threat Was Telephoned to Woman, "You'll Get What Copp Got" ---- POLICE INVESTIGATE --- Say Prisoner Has Confessed Methods Similar to Those of Student's Slayer ---- With the laying of additional charges of housebreaking against John Curran. 21. arrested last week on charges theft of of articles from a parked motor car on Springmount Ave., police allege the youth has admitted being the "party thief" who climbed into a bedroom window of Alexander Beverley's residence, 12 Conrad Ave.. February 20, on the night of stealing $75 in money from guests' purses and a quantity of jewelry. Shortly afterward Mrs. Beverley was terrorized by a telephone threat that unless she stopped giving the police information she "would get what Copp got."
Police at that time believed that the telephone message came from the slayer of Johnny Copp, University of Toronto football star, who was shot outside his Wellesley St. home last November by a porch climber who operated in much the same manner as that which Curran is alleged to have used in entering the Beverley home during a bridge party.
A request that he get three years in Kingston penitentiary was made in police court to-day by Curran, who pleaded guilty to four charges of housebreaking. Magistrate Jones gave him two years.
"This prisoner has a very unusual request," said Crown Attorney Malone, who told the court that the a cused had a very bad record. "He wants to go to Kingston for three years so that he can learn a trade. I would suggest that he get two years."
"All right," agreed his worship.
Curran, who was arrested in the Springmount Ave. district, where several housebreakings have occurred the past few weeks, was held by the police at Ossington Ave. station for further questioning, for they believed he might be the house thief they were looking for.
Curran, it is alleged, pointed out to Detective Todd, among other houses, the Conrad Ave. residence. He emphatically denied telephoning Mrs. Beverley or being in any way connected with the Copp killing.
Curran came up with George Dobson in court to-day for sentence for theft of a suitcase last week from a parked car. Dobson was put on probation for one year. The court was told further informations were to be laid against Curran. He pleaded guilty to them all.
The charges were: On Feb. 20, breaking into the apartment of Alex. Beverley, Conrad Ave., and stealing $75, a diamond pin and a diamond ring; on April 12, breaking into the store of the Atlantic and Pacific Co., St. Clair Ave., and stealing a quantity of cigarettes: on March 28, breaking into the apartment of Leo Coughlin, Springmount Ave., and stealing a gold wrist watch, and on April 1, breaking into the music shop of Charles Bourne and stealing a piano-accordion and a ukulele.
[Curran was indeed given two years. He was 21, from Toronto, a painter and paper hanger, and had been in Burwash Industrial Farm - he had a scrolled tattoo reading mother on his chest. He was convict #3430 at Kingston Penitentiary, worked in the tin & paint shop, was reported once, and then released on good time October 1935.]
