Many of my homecooked meals lately have been vegan or plant based and with locally-sourced ingredients! :-)
Ive made homemade eggdrop soup using backyard eggs and kale from the city market, for instance. Ive been using that kale for many meals. Also zucchini and squash and locally made siopao from Filipino markets. Very good stuff!
(Left to right: homemade eggdrop soup w mushrooms, kale, and backyard eggs from a local farmer; steamed zucchini and squash from the city market and local chicken siopao with rice; Beyond Meat bratwurst and steamed kale from the market on ricebed).
My next goal is to buy some animal products from local (and preferably black and brown) farmers with humane practices for the animals. While I probably wont go back vegan again, the 5 or 6 yrs of being vegan in some of my formal yrs rlly changed my palate for the better. So i dont rlly crave meat as much anymore, and when I do, its cuz I know its a desire for unami flavors and certain textures of food, not meat specifically. That to say I will find such animal farmers for the bit of meat and animals products to supplement a mostly plant based diet I want to curate.
I just bought a nice blender from GoodWill, so I'm excited to start making homemade smoothies with the produce I get from the local market! I stay on the lookout at supermarket chains for cheap yogurt by remembering their sell-by dates since theyyre so perishible and going back to the store to take advantage of their discounts. I currently have almost a pint of unflavored, unsweetened almond milk yogurt to use so I'm really exited to start experimenting with my (relatively) new blender!

Dear healthcare workers who visit people in their homes,
If you give us a time window for your arrival and aren’t going to show, give us the fucking courtesy of a phone call.
My family wasted so many days waiting for people who don’t show up.
If you’re swamped, fine. TELL US YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT AND LET US RESCHEDULE.
Stop making us sit around, changing our routines and rushing to accomplish things only for all that stress and hurrying to be for nothing.
We’re tired, we’re burnt out and we have so little control of our lives already. Stop making it worse.
Just give us a fucking phone call, okay?
Sincerely,
A caregiver who is fucking tired and burnt out.

We set out to test a variety of air purifiers across different price ranges and features, so you can breathe easy knowing you're choosing the best solution for your home.
We tested several leading air purifiers in real-world settings to evaluate their performance, focusing on key factors like filtration efficiency, noise levels, energy consumption, and user-friendly features. Each purifier was put through its paces in different room sizes, from compact spaces to larger living rooms, ensuring that every product on our list delivers optimal results in diverse environments.
What We Tested:

Using AI and transfer learning to improve brain tumor detection and classification
- By InnoNurse Staff -
The paper "Deep Learning and Transfer Learning for Brain Tumor Detection and Classification" explores how AI, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), can detect and classify brain tumors using MRI data.
Researchers trained models to distinguish healthy tissue from tumors and identify tumor types, achieving high accuracy (85.99% and 83.85% for two networks).
A novel aspect of this study involved transfer learning, where a network initially trained to detect camouflaged animals was adapted to improve tumor detection. This approach highlights parallels between identifying camouflaged objects and distinguishing tumors within healthy tissue.
Key findings include:
High accuracy in identifying normal and cancerous brain MRIs, though performance slightly lagged behind human radiologists by about 6%.
Enhanced model explainability, allowing visualization of regions influencing decisions, which fosters trust among medical professionals.
Improved performance through transfer learning, particularly in challenging tasks like distinguishing tumor types.
The researchers emphasize the importance of transparency in AI to ensure its effective integration into clinical settings. Explainable AI can act as a trusted second opinion for radiologists, supporting diagnosis and treatment planning. Future work will focus on refining model interpretability to strengthen human-AI collaboration in medicine.

Excerpt: We can’t be tenders of our people without being engaged in the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual healthcare of our people. This doesn’t apply only to your children but also to your spouse, if so blessed, (grown men need tending, too) your friends, and yourself. It’s hard to tend others when you are overdrawn on your energy-budget, just like you can’t expect to clean your home if you’re covered in mud. You have to be relatively clean to clean your house. Proper healthcare takes care of you and your people.
Let's help each other out! Share some of the must haves in your medicine cabinet, apothecary, and first aid kit. Also, share some of your favorite books, podcasts, or resources for home health management.

Alternative and DIY non-toxic toilet bowl cleaners and disinfectants
"Although DIY-ing your toilet bowl cleaner won’t put a surprising amount of money back in your pocket with every batch, it will provide a safe and natural solution for stains at a reasonable price. [...] DIY toilet bowl cleaner is safer for you to use and friendlier to nature when it eventually finds its way back into the environment than most toilet bowl cleaning products. That said, homemade cleaners can still be hazardous to your health if you don’t take commonsense precautions to protect your eyes and skin when mixing or using them. Wear gloves and safety glasses or goggles when mixing your batch of toilet bowl cleaner, and be sure to store any extra cleaner in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid, out of the reach of children."
Author's tips for using this recipe:
"Disinfect the brush. [...] After use, soak it in vinegar overnight to kill any bacteria lurking in its bristles".
"[...] Disinfect [the toilet tank] by pouring a cup of your homemade cleaner [...] letting it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, and then flushing several times."
"[...] If you have stubborn hard water stains that won’t come off with a standard cleaning, you can use a pumice stone to scrub them clean."
"[...] One thing I usually recommend as a way to save money and have to worry about less ingredients is to just use less products. You don’t need a separate cleaner for your toilet… You can just use a safe all-purpose or bathroom cleaner! That said, I know that some folks just prefer to use separate cleaners for their toilet [...] That’s why I’ve included some recommendations for those below as well. 👍"
"[...] Some ingredients commonly used in toilet bowl cleaners you’ll want to avoid when possible include: Ammonia, Antibacterials (including “quats” and things that end in “cide,” which are usually pesticides), Bleach, Fatty alcohols (This is common in conventional toilet bowl drop-in tablets and the automatic tablets you hook on the side of the bowl, which is part of what makes many drop-in toilet bowl cleaners unsafe.), Formaldhyde releasers (such as methenamine), Hydrochloric acid (which is different than hypochlorous acid), PEGs & other ethoxylated ingredients, Undisclosed “fragrance“, Unnecessary dyes (like the ones that turn your toilet water blue)"
Author's note against excessive anti-bacterial usage in bathroom cleaning:
"One of the biggest problems with antibacterials and disinfectants is that they contribute to antibiotic resistance. This is become a serious problem that leads to millions of deaths each year. Depending on the specific ingredient, other problems associated with antibacterials in general include aquatic toxicity, microbiome disruption, endocrine disruption, reproductive harm, cancer, asthma, and skin/respiratory irritation."
The author then lists brands to try that offer eco friendly cleaning products along with reasonable pros and cons of each product. The brands include:
The DIY recipe
"This recipe comes from Julie Eigenmann! In a squeeze bottle or spray bottle, just mix together: 1 cup of water, 1/8 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup castile soap, like Dr. Bronner’s (alternatively, you can use non-toxic dishwashing liquid); Optional: you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oils if you want. Shake before each use. That’s it! 🌿"
