A federal jury on Monday found an MS-13 gang member guilty of killing five people in Northern Virginia from 2018 to 2022, and another person in Massachusetts.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said in a news release that 27-year-old Elmer De Jesus Alas Candray, a Salvadoran national who also goes by German Alexander Ramirez Lopez, Buky, and Desquiciado, was convicted in six murders, including conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise; five counts each of conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering and murder in aid of racketeering; and three counts of using a firearm during a violent crime resulting in death.

"This case is a stark reminder of the violence and disregard for human life inherent in MS-13’s criminal enterprise," Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia said. "Their deadly activities, from flooding our streets with dangerous narcotics to the brutal murders by which they attempt to impose their presence, will not go unchecked."

Candray and multiple co-conspirators are responsible for six murders.

The first incident brought to justice was on Aug. 15, 2018, when Candray met other members of MS-13 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to kill an associate of MS-13’s Directos Locos Salvatrucha clique, identified as K.A.C.

The gang’s leadership approved the murder because they believed K.A.C. betrayed MS-13. That night, they met the victim at an MS-13 member’s home in New Bedford, where they beat and strangled K.A.C. to death, the attorney’s office said.

The victim’s body was then dismembered and stashed in trash bags before being buried in a wooded area. Candray and others involved were promoted for their roles in the murder.

"Alas Candray committed half a dozen gruesome murders to rise in rank in MS-13, demonstrating a vile disregard for his victims' lives," Acting Special Agent in Charge Geist said.

Nearly a year later, on June 23, 2019, Candray and other MS-13 gang members and associates armed themselves with a 9mm pistol, a .45 caliber firearm and two machetes before traveling to Hunters Woods in Reston, Virginia. While there, the group is accused of killing an individual by shooting and slashing him.

Candray and others also lured a young woman identified in court documents as I.J.P.G., to Colts Neck Road in Reston under false pretenses on Sept. 17, 2020. When the woman arrived, Candray and three co-conspirators killed her by taking turns shooting her in the face.

Candray participated in three other murders in Northern Virginia from March 2021 through June 18, 2022. Then on Aug. 18, 2022, he instructed a relative to tell gang members and associates, using coded language, to get rid of ammunition because law enforcement had pictures of them. Candray also instructed the crew to move out of the area. The next day, the relative relayed the message.

U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for additional information about Candray's immigration status.

Candray will be sentenced by a federal judge Jan. 30. He faces a minimum of life in prison for each of the murder charges.

2019 VoicePlay spring roundup — here, there, and everywhere

An eventful start to the year led into an equally busy spring. In particular, they put out a deluge of music videos, releasing a new one every other week during April and May before settling down to a more reasonable pace.

Celebrate good times

Layne and Tony started the spring by unboxing PattyCake's 100K YouTube subscriber plaque during a livestream chat with their fans. The next day, VoicePlay released a long-awaited video for "Any Way You Want It". A few days after that, VP passed new subscriber milestones of their own on both YouTube and Facebook.

Then the boys spent most of the rest of April working on various projects. In addition to releasing their next video — this time for a Chris Stapleton inspired rendition of "Tennessee Whiskey" — they also had a fair bit of dance rehearsal for their updated "Boy Bands" medley.

They did take a weekend off for some fun times in the middle of the month, though. J.None went to see rapper / singer Tobe Nwigwe. Layne and Cyndi had a night at the theater to see friends in the Andrew Lippa musical Wild Party.

VoicePlay then capped off the their April adventures with two nights of shows at a casino ballroom in northern Nevada.

The hits keep on coming

May began with yet more music videos. VoicePlay put out their groovy version of Prince's "Kiss", and PattyCake released the second episode of their Villains Lair series featuring a trio of disgruntled fairy tale step-moms.

The day after that, VoicePlay headed back to NYC. This time they hit the town in style for the Shorty Awards.

The winner of their category was announced rather unceremoniously in a montage of several awards, and sadly it wasn't our guys, but they seem to have had a fun time anyway. At the very least, they got to visit New York and meet some other folks who are situationally famous.

During a couple more weeks plugging away at home, some of the guys also worked on other projects. Layne and Tony finished off a group of videos they'd produced for YouTubers Danny Gonzalez and Drew Gooden, and J.None played a string of private events with Paradigm Party Band.

Then VoicePlay released their video for club jam "Lost In Japan" in mid-May before heading out of town again for a concert in Fairmont, MN. On the way there, Earl had a chance airport encounter with wrestling legend Shawn Michaels.

On the way home, J.None took a detour to Virginia to attend his high school choral director's final spring show and wish him well on his retirement after more than thirty years as an educator.

VoicePlay finished the month by filming the fiercely demanded video for an expanded version of their boy bands medley that had been thrilling audiences at live shows for many years.

Family time

At the beginning of June, the fellas took a few days of well-deserved rest with their loved ones. Eli and Ashley had a fun night out with an old friend and said hello to Matt Sallee again when Pentatonix came to town on their tour. Layne and his girls celebrated Dori's third birthday with another adorable family music video and a whole royal court of well wishers.

Back to work

When VoicePlay reconvened once more, they gathered at Rayne's Room for a relatively simple video shoot compared to their recent output — the next entry in their "Aca Top 10" series. This time they tackled themes from popular sitcoms.

A few days later, they hopped on a plane to Iowa where they headlined a concert at Grinnell College's fifth annual Summerfest.

When they got home, they dropped their next album. In response to popular demand, the boys compiled a baker's dozen of the tunes from their music videos over the previous two and a half years, and released them on physical media. "Citrus" includes the best of the best from that period, starting with J.None's first collaboration with the group before he was a permanent member, and spanning through his first full-length co-arrangement for the group.

The guys took a little more downtime to close out the month and spend time with their families.

Meanwhile, J.None was still on that grind. He played a set in a group show at a local venue with his occasional collaborator, Daniel Kelley Howard.

Then he headed over to Cocoa Beach to film a promo video for another gig band called Summer Breeze, which is part of Entertaiment Central's offerings. That group's specialty is, as the name suggests, yacht rock and light retro party tunes.

Gov. Youngkin Wants No Mention of MLK Jr. in Virginia Elementary School Curriculums

Governor Glenn Youngkin has introduced a new proposal for Virginia’s elementary schools, which would remove any mention of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from the curriculum of every elementary school in Virginia.  In addition, the proposal also bans topics such as lynching from being taught until 6th grade, and Christopher Columbus' role in the slave trade cannot be taught until 11th grade. 

Well, that makes things pretty clear.  There will be no damn teaching of “woke history” on Gov. Youngkin’s watch!  Now, you can call me crazy, but this almost sounds like “Cancel Culture!”  So, what’s up next - no more references to the “Civil War?”  It must now be referred to as “Stinkin’ Lincoln’s War of Northern Aggression?”  It’s all part of the Republican plan to replace “woke” history books, with these new, improved - MAGA history books.

Of course, Republicans justify the move by claiming that teaching about slavery and racial discrimination makes white children feel “uncomfortable.”  Gee, and to think all these years I’ve been under the impression that the whole point of teaching history was learning about our past, not to make people feel “comfortable.”  Hell, if it’s comfort you’re after, I bet those kids would feel a helluva lot more “comfortable” watching cartoons sitting in Barcaloungers, rather than learning about shit people did ages ago, while they’re sitting in tiny, uncomfortable hardwood desks.      

Oh well, I guess that’s what I get for not being “home-schooled.”  That said, what we’re obviously seeing here is some mighty fancy cultural “whitewashing” - with special emphasis on the “white” part.  The thing is, the courts ruled a long time ago that Dixiecrats (who now call themselves MAGA Republicans) - can’t stop black children from going to the same schools where white children go, so I guess poor Republicans feel erasing history is all they have left.

Oddly, this will mean school kids in Virginia will continue to get “MLK Day” off as a holiday, but will have no idea why.  Things could get a bit awkward when students ask their teachers, “Martin Luther King, who’s that?”  And teacher will have to respond, “I’m sorry, but state law does not allow me to answer that.  You’ll either have to Google it, or ask someone from another state to answer your question.”

So, the problem is, “just how do you talk about Martin Luther King Day, without mentioning Martin Luther King?”  Well, I guess you’ll just have to move to Virginia - if you wanna find that out.  This is yet another example of the old “Imagine your history is so horrifying, you try to ban people from learning about it.”  Well, that’s why it’s so important for folks to remember that this “aw-shucks fascist,” with that great big smile like our Glenn Youngkin - is still a fascist.

Chances of Tropical Disturbance Rise Off Southeast Coast as Area Prepares for Heavy Rain

As the remnants of Hurricane Francine bring heavy rainfall to parts of the Deep South, the Carolina coast is now under the threat of more downpours, with a coastal low potentially developing into a tropical system over the weekend or early next week.

Following Hurricane Francine, which is currently dissipating over the Tennessee Valley, the FOX Forecast Center is closely watching an old frontal boundary off the Southeast coast that could become the source of the season’s next tropical disturbance.

The National Hurricane Center has given this area a medium chance of development over the coming week. Whether it becomes a tropical cyclone or not, the Carolinas can expect rainy and occasionally windy conditions through the weekend and into the first part of the workweek.

The coastline around the Outer Banks and southeastern Virginia is particularly vulnerable to rough seas, as demonstrated by the swells from Hurricane Ernesto, which was more than 1,000 miles away. Waves generated by the former Category 2 hurricane caused flooding along North Carolina Highway 12, the main route through the islands, and led to the collapse of at least one abandoned home into the ocean.

In addition to the coastal system, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring two other features in the Atlantic basin, neither of which currently pose significant threats to land.

The first is a cluster of showers and thunderstorms designated as Invest 94L. An "invest" is a term forecasters use to identify an area under investigation for potential tropical development. Invest 94L is approaching the northern Leeward Islands, where it will increase shower activity. However, strong wind shear and dry air are expected to limit its ability to organize further.

The second feature is Tropical Storm Gordon, located nearly halfway between the Caribbean Sea and Africa. Throughout its life cycle, the storm is forecast to remain over the open Atlantic, without posing a threat to any land areas.

Typically, the seventh-named system in the Atlantic basin forms around September 3, indicating that the 2024 season is lagging behind the average number of named storms for this time of year. Although the Atlantic hurricane season officially spans from June 1 to November 30, historically, September 10 is the date when the highest number of hurricanes and tropical storms have occurred.

Happy St. Patrick's Day-How the Potato Became Irish and Changed History

Like many Americans of my generation, I grew up with a number of Irish families with names like Kelly, O’Shea, O’Donovan, and Murray. Our Parish priests were Father Cavanaugh and Father O’Malley. Sure, our Church was full of second and third generation Irish immigrants.

My Great-grandparents met on the Ship that brought them from Ireland to New York in the 1880’s. They were not part of the Great Migration of Irish that saw so many Irish fleeing starvation a few years earlier. The estimate is that one-quarter of the population of Ireland, or2.1 million Irish, left between 1845-1852, and 95% went to America. 70% found homes in northern American states and cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago.i

The Irish of the 1800’s were dependent on the potato crop as their staple diet. Potatoes are not native to Ireland or even northern Europe. Potatoes are native to the Peruvian Andes. They were unknown in Europe until the end of the 16th Century.

In 1589, Sir Walter Raleigh (the famous English explorer who was granted permission from Queen Elizabeth I to explore Virginia) planted potatoes on his estate in Ireland. His chefs did not know how to cook the strange looking tubers and they included the stems and leaves, which are poisonous, and caused everyone who ate the dish to get sick. France went so far as to ban potatoes for a time, blaming them for causing leprosy.

It took another 150 years for potatoes to become acceptable food in Europe. Potatoes are much easier and less labor intensive as a starch and carbohydrate crop than wheat. Wheat must be turned into bread or noodles to be eatable. Potatoes are ready to cook, or even eat raw, right from the ground. A family could raise enough potatoes on an acre of land to feed themselves for a year.

The “blight” that caused the Great Famine in Ireland was a fungus that originated in Mexico, and was carried to Ireland by ship. Shortly after the potatoes were picked they morphed into a black soggy goo. Irish Catholics were forbidden to own land, and were itinerant farmers on English-owned estates. They had no other food, so families starved.ii

Despite the 36 grams of carbs in a medium sized potato, they are surprisingly nutritious. Potatoes have Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Folate, Niacin and many minerals.
