Here is Part 2!
Part one is over here.
Tarcil
Tomorrow in the triumph of the hunt they would feast, but tonight there were orders of venery to be made in the kennels and stables beneath Glorfindel's watchful eye. The King joined the Master to ascend to the house and to mulled wine and fireside seats and unhurried conversation, picked up no doubt to the beat where they had left off a year before.
But down below was the muster, and in the midst of it, a boy.
"Stay here," said Ronyondur with curtness, steering Tarcil to stand near a great oaken grainbin set into the wall, "and make no nuisance of yourself." Together with Tiuco he went out through the far door to feed and bed the hounds.
For a few minutes Tarcil did his best to blend in with the stable wall, picturing a brown moth with bepatterned wings so unmoving against the wood it disappears. Feeling conspicuous still, as an Imladhrim soldier passed and nodded to him, he pressed into the nook between the wall and the grainbox and slid down to sit crosslegged on the floor.
Elves. Ever busy, ever laughing. The Lord Glorfindel among them like a… like a lantern, the boy supposed. Lighting up the corner of your eye even when you were not looking right at him. He did not shout but still you never did not hear him as he gave his assembling instructions to the throng. He would lead the hunt tomorrow, great-grandfather had said.
The boy's first hunt, or at least his first at hound. Rabbits and gamehens upon the Pelennor counted but a little, though still those little victories had gladdened his heart. They would have broken his mother's; she was a gentle soul and would eat no meat, for the thought of harvesting it sickened her.
Even had it not, she was riddled with fear for him. She had borne his father a firstborn, this he knew, and somehow that elder son had died a half-score years before he had come along, though none would tell Tarcil the story. He learned quickly not to ask, for the wound it opened in her spirit again.
She had not wished for him to come. Not on this strange year when the King would allow no party with him. But his great-grandfather had insisted, and to Tarcil's surprise his father had deigned to please the old man instead of his wife.
It had been a good three weeks.
But now great-grandfather was gone with the Master and Ronyondur had left him here among these fair and unfamiliar faces and he felt he should be helping, but for Ronyondur's command to make no nuisance of himself. There were no other boys here that he had seen; he did not know what might be expected of him and could not tell by watching.
He was not as unobtrusive as he thought, for the next passer-by did not pass by, but sank down beside him upon the floor and offered in one lean Elven hand a tiny tart, adorned o'er the top with a minuscule, sugared snowflake.
Tarcil glanced up. For a breath he did not know his new companion, but then recognition swept him. Though gone were the fine-wrought coronet and gleaming, sunlicked mail and silver-broidered livery. Dark hair now braided back instead of fiercely loosed about his face. Linen shirt of holly-red and leather gambeson and tall boots well-worn in the creases.
"Better take it, and make it disappear," said this person, jiggling the tart. "It was not honestly come by."
Tarcil took it, and disappear it did, as he had not been able to. It tasted of honey and blackberries and summer sunlight, if one could taste such a thing. He used his fingertip to dab a dust of crumbs up from his breechleg, while the knight beside him produced a scroll of leather and rolled it out upon the floor. Inside were files and whetstones and a sharpening dowel arrayed in their line. The boy saw then his companion had brought with him a spear, laid now in its great length along the floorboards, its head a lovely thing, silver-etched and broad in the leaf. The pole was lashed in twain at the waist by a cross-haft as long as the boy's arm. His companion hefted the thing by the neck and swung it out into the aisle so it would lay the other way to sharpen. Glorfindel passing by had to skip over the swinging haft or be struck across the shins.
"Ware," he growled, and gave the seated knight a prod in the haunch with the toe of his boot.
The Master's son, unfazed, flicked up a final tart. The Lord Glorfindel whipped it from the air and devoured it in one bite and continued on his errand.
The spear lay now across Tarcil's lap as well, and his hand of its own accord curled around the haft. Upon closer inspection the wood was graven as well, portrayals of venery in miniature, hawks and hounds and horses at the chase, and all among them, boars. Boars, bristle-backed and bellowing, pawing at the snow, backed into the hollows, gouging at the alaunts, tusked and pin-eyed and mighty in the girth. Boars so lifelike he half-expected them to shake their heads at his approaching fingertip. Boars in illustration as tall at the shoulder as a man.
"Are they that large, truly?" the boy asked in a quiet voice, not looking up.
But the answer was slow in coming, and at last he glanced to find grey eyes slanted to him. They were very bright and very keen. They seemed to weigh him for a moment.
At last the rejoining query came, "If they are, what would you do?"
Tarcil pondered, but not for long. "I hope I would do my duty," he answered, and rubbed his knuckle against the groove of a carven holly leaf.
The Master's son accepted this with a single nod and began to whet the spearhead, first moistening the stone with a quick licked thumb. Tarcil had seen Ronyondur spit straight upon his, but he could not envision this warrior resorting to such a thing.
"Have you…" Tarcil began, but faded off. He was not to make a nuisance of himself, after all.
"Never one so great as this," came the answer nonetheless, a finger reaching over to tap a carven pig as it speared up a wailing, writhing hound on its great tusks. "My first little more than a shoat, a scorestone dressed. And still…" the Elven knight leaned in a little closer. "…I had to go and be ill in the bushes, after, I was so full in the belly with nerves."
The boy gaped at this admission.
The whetting began again. "Your grandfather would remember."
He remembered most things.
They did not speak for a while, as the edges of the spearhead grew white and keen. Tarcil fitted his hand around the juncture of the crosshaft , like a spar athwart a mast. "I have not seen a spear like this," he admitted. "What is the crosspiece for?"
"To halt the charge," came the mild answer. "But one must still stand fast." His companion raised the spearhead to the light to peer at, and then pushed it backwards by the throat until the blade lay heavy upon Tarcil's knee. "Test the edge, and tell me: will it serve?"
He did, with a scrape of his thumb across, not along like a baby to slice himself. One of the first things a boy learned, how to gauge a blade-edge. Even done correctly, the thing nicked up a flap of thumbprint.
"It will serve," said Tarcil.
"Good. With luck we will make use of it, tomorrow."
Several years ago I wrote a midwintery/Christmas gift story for my dear Hollers, and posted it over on ff.net, may it rest in peace. Because it’s looking like I’m going to get approximately zilchteen Christmas gift fics written this year, I’m gonna throw that thing up here for festivity’s/posterity’s sake as I repost it to the Archive. It’s about boar hunting, because Sword in the Stone is my favorite book, doncha know. When it’s not Peace Like a River.

the artist | chapter thirty-four
Even with the shadows growing long, and my knowing that Chris was going to be there that evening, I still could not fend off the pain in my lower back.
I tried to hoist myself up into an upright position in bed, but it was useless: it continued to ache like all hell, and I knew for a fact I would be even more sore come the morning and the following days. There was a wooden dowel I used to lift up the window to let in some of the breeze from outside given the room always got too stuffy if I was in there for too long. I had my hope that I would be alone come the slumber party, but I wasn't.
My parents were in the next room by the time I heard a tap on the windowpane come nightfall.
“Come on in, Chris,” I beckoned him in a soft airy voice as if I was calling my prince. His fingers slid under the edge of the window itself and he pushed it upward. I watched him climb up the outside wall and put one foot over the windowsill.
“Please be careful,” I told him.
“I'm trying—” He hoisted himself up onto the sill and hesitated for a second. I swore he was stuck in place, so I cleared my throat.
“Can you make it?”
“I think—I think I can—” I had no idea where his other leg was on the other side of the wall, but it was either fall onto my desk or onto the floor.
“You got it?” I asked him.
“Yes?” He set his other foot on top of the sill.
“You got it?” I repeated.
“No—!” He lost his balance and fell onto the floor; he missed my desk by about an inch.
“Careful!” I said in a hushed voice.
“Holly?” my mom called from down the hall.
“Get in the closet!” I told Chris. He picked himself up and scrambled into the closet; he left the door open by about an inch. I lay my head back down on the pillow and folded my hands over my chest to make it look as though I was merely daydreaming. There was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” I called out, and she poked her head into the room.
“What was that thump?” she asked me.
“I didn't hear anything,” I said with a shake of my head.
“Huh. I swear I heard something fall over in here. Anyways, that boy Joey is here right now.”
“Oh, he is?” I raised my eyebrows at that.
“Yeah. He's getting something to eat, though—poor thing said he was starving. He'll come in here in a couple of minutes.”
“Okay!”
She bowed back out to leave me in silence.
“Is it okay to come out yet?” Chris whispered from inside the closet.
“Yeah, come on.” He crawled out of the closet and made his way over to the side of my bed so he was eye to eye with me.
“There's not a lot we can do, though, Chris,” I pointed out to him.
He turned his head towards me for a second, and then he eyed the little tray which held my laptop and my drawing pad.
“There is one thing we can do, though,” he started.
“And what would that be?”
“You know how I was always wanting to come on over and have you draw for me?”
“Yeah—” I hesitated, and then I squinted my eyes at him.
He was about to say something when laughter erupted on the other side of the house. He turned his head towards the door, and stray tendrils of black curls spread over his shoulder like a blanket.
“Hang tight for a second,” he told me with his eyebrows knitted together and a finger raised. He climbed up onto his knees and shuffled towards the door. He was taking a big risk doing that given my parents were right there in the next room, but he ducked out of the room and into the hallway for a second. Faint shadows danced about the door panel for a few seconds, and then he returned to the room, that time up on his feet.
“This came,” he said, and Joey limped the room behind him with a bouquet of sunflowers in one arm.
“Joey!” I lifted myself up on the pillows so I could better face him. Chris hung back near my desk.
“An' summa the flowers courtesy of Dave,” Joey declared as he handed me the bouquet. Hollywood sunflowers, after having come in full bloom with the neon embedded underneath the seeds. “Also, I have this—” He reached into his pocket for a little black velvet box.
“Holy shit,” Chris blurted out with a hurt look on his face.
“It's not what ya think,” Joey assured him with a chuckle. “No way, man!” He opened it for me and showed me a little silver butterfly pendant with black opal wings. I gasped at the sight of it.
“Oh my God, Joey—” I whispered as he took a seat on the edge of the bed next to me.
“Do you like it?”
“It's beautiful!”
“Here—” He set the box on the nightstand and took the pendant out of its spot. He winced from the pain in his arm, but he managed to put the chain around my neck; he brought his face close to mine as a result.
“Lift yer head,” he whispered to me, and I did for him. I could smell the soft cologne on his neck and shoulders, and the coffee on those dark lips of his. He slid the clasp of the chain around the back of my neck so he could better close it for me. He lay the clasp down on my collar bone so he could better examine the pendant and his cheekbones filled out with the smile. So full and kissable.
“Just gorgeous,” he remarked in a low voice. He then cleared his throat and reached into his pocket for something.
“An' this is from Lars. He wanted to come but he needed to do some other things, though.”
He took out a black weave bracelet with a silver button in the middle and put it around my wrist. As he fastened it atop my wrist, I caught the sound of a quiet grumble from him and I remembered what my mom had said before then.
“Was that your tummy?” I asked him with a chuckle.
He leaned back and patted his stomach.
“You better eat somethin' then,” Chris teased him.
“I'm waitin' on a li'l Reuben sandwich at the moment,” Joey scoffed. “Li'l Reuben with some fries—there's one comin' for darlin' Hahllywood here, too.”
“Oh boy,” I declared as I reached for his stomach. He lurched back: I reached for him again but I was met with a surge of pain up my back. I caught myself in an almost upright position and lay back down on the bed in agony. I was going to be so sore in a few days time; but I had Joey and Chris there with me, the former of whom leaned over me to kiss me on the cheek.
“After I've eaten, I'll let ya rub my tummy,” he said to me, “sump'n big like a Reuben always fill me up. Get some more after that like French fries an' I'm all yours.”
“Rub his full belly like you're making a wish,” Chris cracked, to which Joey laughed. But I noticed a rather thoughtful look on Chris' face as he said that.
“Nah—we ain't makin' wishes,” he pointed, “I ain't big enough yet.” Once he had lifted himself back up, he shook his wrist about to ease the pain.
“By the way, how's Stoney doin'?” I asked Joey as he brought his wrist to his stomach.
“Who?”
“Stoney. Stone.”
“Oh!” Joey raised his eyebrows at me. “Oh, he's fine. Dave picked him up this mornin' an' he's back at the place they're bunkin' in restin'. He didn't have the virus but he did eat sump'n pretty awful, though.”
“Oh, jeez.”
“Yeah, apparently he tried to guzzle it down with a bit'a hooch, too. Did naht work to say in the least.”
“There's a reason Stoney don't drink too much,” Chris pointed out, “he can't carry his liquor.”
“Yeah, that's what Dave said. Oh! I forgot ta tell ya this, too—and apparently Lars wants to do another art show with ya, Hahlly.”
“Really?”
“Oh, yeah, that's what he said to me, too!” Chris joined in as he inched closer to us. “Completely forgot about that, too, so thank you for mentioning it, Joey. It's the whole thing about how when artists are damaged in some way, people get drawn into them more than ever. And I guess word got out that Hollywood Sherman was injured in a bike accident and now everyone's going crazy over your work.”
“Huh. Wow.”
Joey then turned to me with his wrist clutched to his chest and a twinkle in his eye.
“Chris oughta pose for ya after we eat,” he proclaimed.
“Funny, when you showed up, he and I were just discussing that,” I recalled.
“By the way, how'd ya get in?” Joey asked Chris, “'cause her mom didn't say anythin' 'bout anyone else bein' here.” To which he gestured to the window, and Joey burst out laughing.
There was a knock on the door and Joey shot up to answer it for me.
“Homemade Reuben sandwiches,” I heard my mom say; Chris had ducked back into the closet when Joey's back was turned. So close.
Joey handed me my plate of sandwich and fries and then he took his.
“By the way, leave your door open,” she said.
“Why, 'cause I'm with a boy?” I joked.
She didn't answer but I knew that was the case. Indeed, Joey left the door ajar as he limped back to the edge of the bed. My room soon filled with that warm combined aroma of roast beef, Swiss cheese, toasted bread, and French fries.
“Would you like a bite, Chris?” I offered once he returned back out of the closet.
“I actually ate before coming here, but thank you, though.” He eyed the side of my plate with the fries, these big fat fries that looked as though they came from a diner. Joey was more than eager to eat up his sandwich with his uninjured hand: there was something lovely about a skinny guy who could eat to his heart's desire and every part of what lay on his plate. Come to think of it, each of us were starving. All of us trying to pick ourselves up from the bottom of the barrel in the wake of the pandemic; and yet as I ate at my own sandwich and fries, and I watched Joey stick his tongue out to catch some of the mayo and the beef, I couldn't help but picture him doing that to me. Running his tongue along my own lips and licking up my own mayo.
The way in which he held each of the fries made me think of him touching my nipples.
Even though I nursed my own food, there was something erotic to him. I pictured Lars eating that same sandwich in the same fashion and it was hard to concentrate on my own.
I watched him make love to that sandwich, such that as he got fuller and fuller, he grew more and more relaxed and more like clay in the palm of my hand. Paints came from clay...
Joey managed to swallow down the fries, one by one; at one point, he tilted back his head and showed off his neck to me. He took in the last one and set the plate on the foot of the bed so he could lean back. I raised my legs up so he could lay down.
“Phew, stick a fork in me,” he remarked as he set his hands on his stomach.
“Nah, I'd rather draw that little body of yours,” I told him, and it was then I had an idea. Fill all the boys full and then draw their bodies when they're feeling all warm and soft and relaxed. I could envision them right then: all the more sensual than the initial paintings I had made in the speakeasy. I would have to do it once I healed up because I couldn't imagine explaining to my parents why more and more boys were coming and going from the house in the midst of a returning pandemic. I ate more fries before I turned to Chris again.
“You sure you don't want any?” I asked him.
“Positive. It does smell really good in here, though.” He then turned to Joey, who lay there on his back down by my feet.
“You got anything appropriate for a slumber party?”
“Me?” Joey asked him as he raised his head up to show off the delirious look on his face.
“Yeah.”
“I didn't know we were havin' a li'l party,” he confessed.
“Well, I figure 'cause you're as full as the moon, you oughta relax here with Holly and myself.”
“Yeah, Joey, I'll let you guys sleep in my bed with me,” I told him, and I could feel myself grow moist at the thought of cuddling with Joey's warm little body.
“Two boys in your bed,” he cracked. “I see how you are. I do have a blanket in the back of the car, though, Chris.”
“So you want me to climb out the window and fetch your blanket?” Chris asked him, mortified.
“I'll cover for ya, though,” Joey pointed out. “Y'know—I'll make it look like I'm goin' back ta my car ta get sump'n.”
“Yeah, seeing as you actually climbed through my window to get in,” I added as I took another bite of sandwich. Chris shrugged at that.
“Alright, that makes sense. But when we come back, I wanna be painted.”
“Of course, of course,” I promised him and I reached to the right to switch on my laptop. Joey groaned as he sat up and climbed to his feet. He ran the fingers on his injured hand through his hair and then he stepped out of the room; Chris climbed back out the window, which left me alone in the room. I caught the sound of singing outside.
I knew that voice, even it being completely off-key over the guitar playing. It was my assaulter. Sitting there across the street with an acoustic guitar and singing off-key to some song I had never heard of. A terrible voice to go with a terrible person, and yet I was the one bed ridden.
“YOU SUCK!” Chris and Joey shouted in unison out there in the street, which brought a laugh out of me.

Sistrum Tutorial: part one
Step 1: gather your materials. In this case, I’m using walnut for the handle, copper for the body, probably bronze wire to string the jangles, some beads for spacers, and then I’ll be making the jangles out of holly. That last may not work great, but the last time I made one with metal jangles it didn’t sound very good. If you want to make a pair like I’m going to do, make sure to get enough material for both. I’m starting with a 3 ft by ¾" dowel for the handles and 6 ft of 1/16" by 1" copper for the body.
Step 2: measure and cut handles to length. Let’s do about 10" long, that feels right.
Step 3: those ends look nasty, file them smooth. Now set them aside for later.
Step 4: cut the first body piece. Let’s do 24" for this. I don’t have an industrial metal shop in my garage, so I’ll just use my jewelers saw and a machinist’s jig to make sure I cut it off straight. I put the jig on the side that will be my part for easier clean up.
Step 5: check cut end of part for flatness and file in jig as needed. Make sure it’s clamped tight or it will fall out like mine did.
Step 6: anneal the work piece. If you have more than one torch, use it. Once it’s cool, bend the ends around so they meet. Make sure the joint is clean and straight. My pickle pot is tiny, so I just sanded off the scale around the joint. Don’t worry about the shape right now, just get those ends together.
Step 7: solder the ends together. This is a two torch job, trust me. In order to help keep it in place, I cut a groove in my soldering block. Fire up your torches and pray it’s hot enough. Quench it and clean up the joint enough so you can tell if you got a clean seam.
Step 8: make sure the entire piece is annealed and roll it around and bend it into a pleasing shape.
Step 9: see how it looks with your handle, make adjustments as necessary. To be perfectly honest, I’m working without a print, so I wasn’t entirely sure these sizes would look good, but they do.

Ten architecture projects from students at the University of Oregon College of Design
An urban agricultural centre that highlights all aspects of the food cycle and a design that explores the domesticity of public space are included in our latest school show by students at the University of Oregon, College of Design.
Also included are mass timber structural systems, a forest-based education centre and solutions to the housing crises.
University of Oregon, College of Design
School: School of Architecture and Environment Tutors: Peter Keyes, Judith Sheine, Howard Davis, Mark Donofrio, Hajo Neis, Esther Hagenlocher, Craig Wilkins, Kayin Talton Davis, Cleo Davis and Gerald Gast
School statement:
"University of Oregon's School of Architecture and Environment is nationally recognised for its innovation and sustainability research, including designing buildings, interiors, landscapes and communities.
"We are committed to the principles of civic responsibility, environmental sustainability, international understanding and interdisciplinary education. The School of Architecture and Environment is located on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the historic White Stag Block in Portland. We are a vibrant, collaborative learning community.
"We help students develop the values, knowledge, skills and practices they need to create better architecture and environments that resonate with people and their cultural, physical and ecological worlds. We are dedicated to recognising designers' accountability for their impact on environmental, social and cultural systems.
"We emphasise collaboration and a non-competitive but rigorous learning environment and encourage a supportive studio culture through facilitated peer teaching and teamwork. The School of Architecture and Environment doesn't dictate a specific design aesthetic or ideology for you to follow. Instead, we encourage intellectual inquiry as to the basis from which you forge your design path."
Feed Your City: Nourish Lents by Hannah Zalusky
"Nourish Lents is an urban agricultural centre that highlights all aspects of the food cycle, from growing to compost in order to educate and nourish the community.
"As a model sustainable urban food centre, it aims to reduce food-related carbon dioxide emissions by recycling food waste and providing alternatives to animal meat consumption.
"The programme directly addresses the economic and social needs of the Nourish Lents community with a large flexible plaza, grocery store, food pantry and community garden plots.
"The on-site aeroponic vertical farming and insect farming will become resilient food sources for the local restaurant economy, and new food businesses can grow in the rentable kitchen and processing spaces."
Student: Hannah Zalusky Course: Davis, ARCH 586, Foodspace: food, architecture and the city in the post-Covid 19 era Tutor: Howard Davis
Industrial Metabolism by Brennen Donnelly
"This thesis project examined the ecological and industrial processes of a town along the Oregon coast where logging and agriculture have historically dominated the local economy.
"A master plan was proposed that introduced facilities to refine logging waste into biochar. This is fueled by an onsite methane digestor, sapling greenhouses irrigated by the effluent from the digestor, dowel-laminated timber manufacturing facilities to expand logging operations, and hangars for industrial drones for seeding and reforestation.
"The building most extensively developed was the Timber Research and Innovation Centre. Inspired by Coastal Oregon vernacular, this building was proposed as a setting for researchers, designers, foresters and fabricators to collaborate to ensure that the natural resource is sustainably optimised on all fronts. The Timber Research and Innovation Centre is the feedback loop for all processes onsite."
Student: Brennen Donnelly Course: Donofrio, ARCH 586 Building Economy Maintenance Ecology Tutor: Mark Donofrio
Landscapes of Care by Josymar Rodriguez
"Landscapes of Care is a research project developed in Oldtown, Portland. This is a neighbourhood where urban blight coexists with new developments, transition housing and numerous organisations catering towards the houseless population.
"It is an area where the public realm is home to many people. The project builds upon these questions: can we design cities beyond the monotone, oppressive and anonymous grey landscapes we are used to? Can we expand the limits of the domestic and transform our cities into landscapes of care?
"The design explores the domesticity of the public realm. It states that the domestic city comes from within, from the intimate and spreads towards the outside. Here, it expands the notion of home and those who comprise it.
"This project is the first step in that direction with public access services on the ground floor and housing at the top. It offers multiple outdoor spaces to build tight communities, connect with nature, enjoy yourself and the company of others.
"The domestic city takes every chance to build a sense of home in the public realm, where you can find spaces for contemplation, meditation, rest, work and make, cook, and eat, cleaning yourself, meeting, and interacting. The domestic city erases the limits of public and private, putting in place structures of care and solidarity to build a just world."
Student: Josymar Rodriguez Course: Neis, ARCH586 The EU-US International House, Innovation and Re-Generative Design Tutor: Hajo Neis
Transcalar Digestion by Billy Guarino
"Transcalar Digestion is the culmination of a two-term research studio that examined the problems associated with water quality and land exploitation in the Tillamook region of The Oregon Coast.
"The building, landscape and climate work in harmony to frame the crucial relationship between the water cycle, land management and water quality. As a result, the building programme is situated atop a hill at the Port of Tillamook Bay to capture views of the watershed and immerse itself in the forest.
"Here, an aquafarm-to-fork restaurant allows people to taste quality seafood that is harvested locally and sustainably, while a museum showcases exhibitions related to ecology, geography, local industries, forests and water quality."
Student: Billy Guarino Course: Donofrio, ARCH 586 Building Economy Maintenance Ecology Tutor: Mark Donofrio
Gateway Elementary School and Civic Centre by Isaac Morris
"A generous ground floor public service and civic centre provide the platform to elevate an urban elementary school which utilises a standardised classroom module to create a village of learning for a free-roaming and self-discovering student experience.
"These elements are brought together via a generous pedestrian ramp which provides secure and universal access to the school, as well as creates spatial nodes of activity along the way."
Student: Isaac Morris Course: Hagenlocher, ARCH585 House of Learning Tutor: Esther Hagenlocher
Forest Stewardship Research Centre by Flynn Casey
"Located at the entrance to the McDonald and Dunn Research Forests near Corvallis, OR, the Forest Stewardship Research Centre (FRSC) is a facility for research and education focusing on the relationship between people and forests.
"The building leverages computational design and prefabrication to set a new standard for high-performance timber construction. It makes extremely efficient use of wood fibre, resulting in a lightweight structure that touches lightly on the ground, respecting the roots of the specimen trees surrounding it, as well as the archaeological Kalapuya land it rests on.
"The building is designed to be carbon-neutral in operation as well as construction, with the goal of meeting Living Building Challenge standards."
Student: Flynn Casey Course: Sheine, ARCH 585/586 Mass Timber Design Tutor: Judith Sheine
At the Intersection: Suburban Retrofitting by Holly Nuovo
"The single-family detached home, hovering like magnets five feet from the property line, turn their back on public space, privatising what used to be urban functions. Not just social division, these developments result in environmental disconnection.
"Fine-grain textures and proximities become a radical implication of the new urbanism created by banning single-family zoning. My project explores these potentials to conceive of the medium density home not as punishment but opportunity, not as an object but an ecosystem, where the house acts as a field rather than a mass, interacting with and influencing the interconnected forces that form our lives."
Student: Holly Nuovo Course: Keyes, Arch 585 Reframing Housing and Presentation Tutor: Peter Keyes
Peavy Lodge Forest Education Centre by Duma Nguyen
"Inspired by the structure of a tree, the Peavy Lodge Forest Education Centre looks to act as a beacon in the forest that also serves as a demonstration for mass timber construction.
"Peavy Lodge creates spaces of shelter similar to that of a tree overhang. The dynamic facade acts as a protective barrier from the elements resembling a tree's bark that breathes life into the building.
"Peavy Lodge's roof structure imitates the complexity of a forest canopy while allowing light to filter through openings in the roof, connecting users back to nature through the architectural structure.
"These elements combined create a beacon in the McDonald-Dunn forest that creates an ethereal, glowing object set in the forest scenery."
Student: Duma Nguyen Course: Sheine, Arch 585/586 Mass Timber Design Tutor: Judith Sheine
Green Works Progress Administration by Katherine Martin
"This project is about more than just the historic preservation of a beautiful building or a call for social justice in the face of rapid gentrification. It is also about more than providing easier access to a technical college education and more than a programme for America's most vulnerable to reinvent their livelihood.
"This project is about a 100-year-old building whose new life will allow itself (and the rest of us) to make it through the next 100 years. We need to start talking about buildings at the scale of centuries. This project hopes to begin that conversation and ask what it means to be truly sustainable, both for the climate and our communities.
"There is a lot of energy in the SoNo District between midtown and downtown Atlanta for a landmark proposal. From a climate perspective, utilising an empty building is the best strategy. The project preserves as much of the existing structure as possible, and any changes made to the facade or concrete system should have a restorative, performative, or programmatic purpose.
"The architectural strategy explored voids that enhance the daylighting and natural cooling properties of the structure. These voids also created large volumes suitable for workshops, the main programmatic element of the proposal.
"From a social sustainability perspective, this building provided a rich opportunity. In a rapidly gentrifying portion of the city, this project's unique history creates poetic statements about equity and justice in our inner cities. The proposal hopes to spark new life into this historic structure and help an often-ignored community, the homeless."
Student: Katherine Martin Course: Gast, ARCH 585/586 Linking Education and Architecture Tutors: Gerald Gast
Tools for Albina: Bstrong Learning Hub by Garrett Leaver
"This project is about intergenerational learning and Black youth. The traditional education system in America is broken, especially for students of colour.
"Learning comes from everywhere – it comes from the community and flows between generations. Noni Causey, director of The Black Educational Achievement Movement (BEAM), is rewriting education with Bstrong Learning Hub, situated in her home in Albina.
"As a student of Causey, I'm aware that its important to learn from professionals in our community in order to develop real-life skills. Here, I have imagined open source tools and an architectural tectonic to build momentum and change education.
"Detailed improvements to the site and street start to open up more conversations from the heart: bringing awareness to the history of Albina and other cities.
"Providing a safe, resilient forum for these conversations is first. A large covered forum and changes to the street front bring people in and maintain visibility. Next is introducing a sustainable, open architecture. Where the informality, lightness and tradition of the front porch are elevated. Inviting gathering, eating, and play around the corner.
"Students want to meet professionals and learn directly from the source. So, flexible and accessible maker spaces are available. This is also an opportunity for home improvement for other residents in exchange for them teaching their own classes and community. This architectural system paired with participatory design and making allow for scalable change, that grows with the Black community in Albina."
Student: Garrett Leaver Course: Wilkins, Davis, Davis, ARCH 585/586 ReBuilding Cornerstones. Tutors: Craig Wilkins, Kayin Talton Davis and Cleo Davis

The Killing of Rhonda Hinson: Part 11
Sarah McBrayer,
Rhonda Hinson’s neighbor
By LARRY J. GRIFFIN
Special Investigative Reporter
For The Record
“Grief is something you never get over. You don’t wake up one morning and say, ‘I’ve conquered that; now I’m moving on.’ It’s something that walks beside you every day.”—Terri Erwin, posted on Facebook by Judy Hinson
Bill Holland and his wife, Wanda, played tennis with Rhonda Hinson from time to time. In fact, when Rhonda and Rick Steiner won the Valdese Tennis Association’s Mixed-Doubles Paired Partners tournament in the Fall of 1981, by a playoff score of 21-19, it was Wanda Holland who presented them their awards.
And it was Bill Holland who was the first Burke County Sheriff’s Department officer to arrive on a crime scene—the early morning of December 23rd—in which a young woman, known for her tennis prowess, lay dead from a gunshot wound.
Officer Danny Barus, who was making rounds on North Laurel Street, crossed Main Street and then onto Eldred. According to his recollections, he arrived at the crime scene approximately a minute after Lt. Harry Feimster; both had been on-site ‘a good while’ prior to Holland’s arrival. “The scene was turned over to Sgt. Bill Holland of the Burke County Sheriff’s Department upon his arrival,” Barus subsequently documented in a “little ole’ incident report.” Other detectives appeared as well, one of whom was John McDevitt.
In a demonstration of pathetic fallacy by Mother Nature—as if responding to the horrific Yuletide murder—it commenced to drizzle raindrops down upon the crime scene. Sgt. Holland removed his coat and covered the lifeless body of his young friend to keep her from getting wet.
Wayne Chapman—with whom Rhonda had ridden to work less than 24-hours earlier—left the Omelette Shoppe in Hickory with a group of revelers from the Hickory Steel Christmas party. He and his wife were driving on Interstate 40 West toward their Morganton home and passed the Mineral Springs Mountain Road exit. They would later recall seeing the “blue lights from police vehicles on the north side of the intersection.”
Though the Chapmans apparently did not stop, other drivers traveling on Eldred Street commenced to do so; a small group of onlookers begin to gather. Richard Barlow was one of them.
“Bobby and Judy had heard about someone being killed on their police scanner; and Bobby kept calling asking us to come over,” Mr. Barlow recounted during a telephonic interview. “I told my wife [Linda] that Rhonda was all right and that I didn’t think anything had happened to her. But we decided to go on over there. We left home and drove on Interstate 40 [West] and got off on Exit 112 [Mineral Springs Road] and started up the hill. There was Rhonda’s car.”
Mr. Barlow stopped, exited his vehicle, and walked toward Rhonda’s Datsun. The first person whom he encountered was Burke County officer, Bill Holland. “I asked him if that was Rhonda Hinson and he wouldn’t answer me. I said, ‘Look, I am on my way over to Bobby’s and Judy’s house right now, and I need to be able to tell them something.’ He asked me not to do that and to let them tell the Hinsons first. I told him that he’d better hurry and do so.”
Detective Holland asked the Barlows to return home and that he would phone them just as soon as law enforcement had the opportunity to speak with Rhonda’s parents. Richard Barlow agreed. He returned to his car, parked behind the ambulance, and watched as emergency personnel loaded Rhonda Hinson’s body.
“I believe it was Robbie [the Hinsons’ son] that called us to say that it is OK to go over there now, “recalled Mr. Barlow.
By the time their good friends arrived at the Hinsons’ house, Judy and Bobby had learned that Rhonda had been killed. It was Richard Barlow who told them that she had been shot to death.
Another passing vehicle, a beige 1981 Chevy Citation, made a U-turn, and returned to the crime scene—the driver was the Reverend Charles McDowell. SBI Agent John Suttle saw him.
“Mr. Mc Dowell left and went to look for her [Rhonda] in the beige Citation. Charlie did not get home before Valdese PD called and told us what happened,” Betty McDowell explained in a February, 1982 interview.
“I came through the crime scene, stopped and asked what happened. I thought that she [Rhonda] had passed out, ran off the road and that was what had killed her,” Charles McDowell recounted for Judy Hinson in a couple of documented conversations. “I asked them about the car, ‘cause I said it looked like the car of the person I had been looking for. They would not tell me what had happened. And they asked me who I was and I told them, and they told me to go on over to your house and there would be a detective over there to tell me what was going on.”
It was after 3 a.m., when John McDevitt and Bill Holland knocked on the door of the Hinson’s Hillcrest home to confirm their worst nightmare—their 19-year-old daughter would not be coming home.
Judy Hinson vividly recalls the moment that law enforcement appeared at her door.
John McDevitt was wearing jeans and work boots of some kind; Bill Holland was with him, and another man that I did not recognize and thought he was one of the detectives because of the way he was dressed. McDevitt asked me if there was anyone that he could call for us. I responded that he could call Rev. McDowell. That’s when the unknown man stepped forward and said that he was McDowell. Well, I didn’t know Greg’s father, though I remember seeing them briefly at Rhonda’s graduation. But that was the first time that I really saw him to know who he was.
Next-door neighbor, Sarah McBrayer, remembered that it was her mother who awakened her the early morning of December 23rd. “…She got me up and said something has happened at the Hinson’s house. So I walked across the street. I was there when Charles [McDowell] arrived…I did not know one policeman from the other at that point.”
At 3:37 a.m., John McDevitt placed a long-distance phone call to Greg McDowell, from the Hinsons’ telephone, to apprise him that his girlfriend had been killed on Mineral Springs Mountain Road. Thirteen minutes later—at 3:50 a.m., Charles McDowell telephoned his wife, Betty, and son, Greg. “I don’t know all that he said; but I did hear him say, ‘You’d better get up here,’” Judy Hinson recollected.
Ms. McBrayer later observed Charles making a second call subsequent to calling his wife and son. “I couldn’t hear much of the conversation; however, it sounded to me as if he was already making funeral arrangements for Rhonda. But I didn’t think that he would have been able to that so very early in the morning.”
Ms. Hinson also remembered the arrival of Greg and his mother. “Mr. McDowell was standing by the door that led into the kitchen from the carport when his family arrived. They [Greg and Betty] did not speak to him or him to them when they came in; the two of them headed straight into our bedroom [located off the kitchen] and sat down on the bed. Neither Greg, his mother, nor his father spoke to us at that point. I even asked Reverend McDowell if he would take me to tell my mother about Rhonda. He didn’t even acknowledge the request I made. So, Linda and Richard Barlow took me to tell my Mother.”
Greg appeared very pale and seemed upset when Judy finally walked up to him in the bedroom, put her arm around him as he sat on her bed and said, “Greg, what are we going to do?” Greg did not respond but immediately bolted toward the bathroom and threw-up.
“I remember his throwing-up about three times while he was there,” observant neighbor Sarah McBrayer reported. “In fact, he was either sitting on the bed or making trips to the bathroom the whole time he was there.” But something else struck Sarah as ‘strange.’ “I noticed that Greg was freshly shaven and appeared to have already showered—he smelled good.”
“Greg had fast beard growth and would have to shave twice-a-day, Judy remembered. “But when I hugged him, I thought to myself ‘he’s already shaved this morning.’ I just felt it odd for him to be clean-shaven that early.”
Sarah McBrayer drew a similar inference, “Let me put it to you this way—if I had been asleep and had just gotten a phone call that my girlfriend had been killed, I don’t think that I would have taken the time to shower and shave—I would have thrown on whatever I could find and out the door I would go. I would not have cared about how I looked.”
The McDowells did not remain at the Hinson house long before they left for their Wilkies Grove parsonage. They apprised no one of their departure.
About a mile away in Holly Hills, Revonda Turner was awakened by the screams coming from her daughter Jill’s bedroom. “I rushed into her room to see what the matter was,” Ms. Turner explained.
“Thirty-minutes or so after Bobby called me looking for Rhonda, I get a phone call from a high school classmate and friend, Shelly Kaplan, telling me that my best friend had been killed earlier,” Jill Turner-Mull recalled. “I couldn’t believe it; I lost it; all I could do was scream.”
“She [Jill] was inconsolable from that point on. No one was able to sleep after the news came that Rhonda was dead,” Ms. Turner indicated in an initial interview in her Holly Hills home.
But later morning—just a few hours after her best friend had been killed—Jill decided that she and Mark Turner should go to Wilkies Grove to check on Greg. “I didn’t give him much of a choice. I told him about Rhonda and said that he had to come pick me up so we could go check on Greg. He did, and we arrived at the McDowell’s house—well I know it was before 7 a.m. Greg’s mother, Betty, was still there and had not gone to work yet. She answered the door and—quite frankly—seemed irritated that we were there.”
Mark Turner, in his first-ever interview, conducted in the office of Detective James Pruett on Jan. 4, 1996, also remembered that he and Jill visited Greg’s house around 7 a.m. “I think the TV was on; Greg was lying on the bed, and he didn’t talk much.”
“I don’t remember Greg’s saying anything to either Mark or myself,” Jill averred. He acted like he was in a daze, lying propped up on the bed, staring straight ahead toward the TV. He never made eye- contact with either Mark or me the entire time we were there, and he didn’t respond to anything that we said. I just figured he was too upset to even talk to us.”
The couple decided to leave and was driving away when Mark Turner saw Greg “run out of his home” waving them down.” “I stopped while Greg went to his car—I can’t remember which car—and brought a pack of condoms and gave them to me. He said something like, I don’t want them—I guess his parents or Rhonda’s parents—to find out we were having sex.’”
Mr. Turner remarked that he felt this act was very odd behavior for Greg, especially since he was noticeably unresponsive only minutes earlier. The package of condoms was unopened and Mark stated that he “thinks he threw them away later.”
In her Jan. 26, 2019, initial interview with this writer, Jill Turner-Mull recounted another occurrence that “struck her as strange” during the 7 a.m., visit with Greg on December 23rd. “I noticed that Mr. McDowell didn’t seem to be at home when Mark and I arrived. So, I asked Betty where he was. She told me that he had already ‘flown-out’ that early morning to pick-up some relatives who were going to visit them during the Christmas holidays.”

New Neck for an Old Friend
This is a tale about choosing whom you let work on your favorite guitars…..The victim here was a 63 Gibson 335 reissue. The owner wanted the neck shaved, a common mod back in the day but not seen so much today with all the thin shredy necks on the market.
The plan is to save the guitars identity and provide the slim, oil finished neck the owner wants. So we begin with some disassembly and salvage. Here is the online source of genuine guitar parts like Gibson Nashville bridge, wraparound bridge, guitar tuner buttons, strings etc. First up I need to remove the fret board so I use it on the new neck. I do this with a heat gun and some small spatulas. I use heat shields that are made out of heavy cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil to protect the finish on the top of the guitar. I prefer to start at the body and work my way up the neck.
Once the FB is off I can remove the neck. Since I cannot save the neck there is no reason to waste time steaming apart the joint. Here comes the saw! I carefully cut the neck off with a back saw taking care to not actually hit the metal truss rod with my saw. That leaves me a few inches of truss rod to dig out of the portion of the neck still in the body. A chisel makes quick work of that and the neck is free.
I also drill two hole up into the end grain and after the neck shaft is carefully fitted I transfer those to the new work and install two small mahogany dowels to reinforce the end grain joint. No sense putting all the stress on a .060” Holly veneer when we do not need to……I slot the new neck and install the truss rod that I removed under a maple cap. This is done to a non standard depth to provide proper function in a thinner than normal neck. Then The headstock can be clamped and glued to the rough blank.

Saint jeremys’angels
Wood cracked from rain and sun, insulating porcelain, black flocks of birds perched on wires. I count the telegraph poles and jump down from the train. Thirty-three poles . Thirty-three as the age of Christ.
I step down because St. Jeremy is a good place to spend the Christmas night. They say that you can hear the angels sing and the children put candles on the windowsill.
I cross the church square howling my song: Sister Death, Sister Death , why do not you take me back? I walk slowly , the rags are not enough to protect me from chilblains. Bad boys throw snowballs at me, bad boys are everywhere.
I see myself in the Keaton's window , while drooling on sausages hung in festoons , along with a black mongrel dog. I'm leaving and the mongrel follows me.
Sitting on a step, with my hat between my knees , I roll up a cigarette . Angels or no angels, before night falls, a dollar will drop in the greasy cap, I will pay a bed by lousy Reverend Gordon. Sister Rosy puts a dish covered with a towel next to the cap: "Jack, you’re still alive?”
"And you, you dirty whore? "
She goes away.
The hours pass, it starts to snow . A couple of coins fall in the cap. Christmas Eve charity, lousy charity.
From the windows I see women filling the turkey with chestnuts. I imagine biting into the crispy skin at the flickering light of a candle. The children cut paper stars, then look out of the window and put a lighted candle on the windowsill.
The bells jingle, the bells of Santa Claus’ sleigh. All doors are crowned with holly and sing hymns of joy.
All, but not the Mac Dowell door. It hasn’t a garland of red berries like the others, it talks to me through its black ribbon, its voice oiled. "The boy is dead," it says. I could go two houses ahead, where the light invites to party and you smell roast. Instead, I sit with my back against the Mac Dowell door.
A man and a woman pass. "Have you seen? ", they whisper , "Mary Mac Dowell has not removed the black ribbon yet. " They throw a coin in the hat, no one refuses a piece of bread on a night like this.
Now I have my dollar. Now I can go down to the mission, I have my dollar.
I linger, with my hands deep in the dog’s hair; I curl up against the Mac Dowell door. The bastard licks my feet, black like the ribbon.
The stairs are softened because the snow thickens. The dog's tongue is warm on my legs that I do not feel anymore down there at the bottom of the pants . The snow falls, cold and sweet.
Sister Death, Sister Death, why do not you take me back? It 's my singing voice .
Then it is no longer my voice.
The road has become dark or maybe I closed my eyes. I hear someone singing but it is not me, I swear .
The angels flutter in the flakes , they whirl in spirals of snow, snowmen riding ice. I watch them swirl in the crystals and touch the doors with wings drenched in snow. All doors, but especially the Mac Dowell door.
I'm not cold, I'm not afraid. Inside the house, Mrs. MacDowell does not cry anymore, I hear only the voice of the angels.
The angels of St. Jeremy singing.
