Music Overload In Music City
We hit Robert’s Western World on Lower Broadway late Saturday for much drinking into the small hours and dancing to *Brandon Birkedahl and the Beer Joint Jumpers*. I sat next to two older ladies from Indiana who said they were here from 11am to 2am every day they were in Nashville. They were still hopping when we left and, lo and behold, they were in the same seats at noon the next day for Sunday morning Gospel music. May the Lord be praised!
The Ryman Auditorium was built as a Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892 and still stands with the same sturdy wooden pews. For 30 years it was the home of the Grand Ole Opry, then abandoned, and now restored as a first class music venue; massive solid pews included. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit played their last show of the year and went out with a bang. Just a brilliant talent and wonderful show in every way.
The Grand Ole Opry moved to a newer and bigger venue in the 70s but still maintained the wooden pews - now with padding thankfully - for 4000 people attending the live radio broadcasts on WSM Radio. The show this week was headlined by Vince Gill and included six other artists that I had never heard of but now love completely. Rhonda Vincent and her bluegrass band, Thompson Square and Drew Holcomb are contemporary groups with beautiful heartbreaking voices. Whispering Bill Anderson first performed at the Opry in 1959 and at 86 years old was still crooning to a standing ovation this week.
I really loved Don Schlitz and I was certainly the only person in the audience that did know that he wrote the classic lines “You gotta know when to fold ‘em, Know when to hold ‘em, Know when to walk away, Know when to run”. Every country song is a life lesson to be learned and Vince Gill owned the Opry with “Which bridge to cross and which bridge to burn”. Marvelous evening.
Along with all this, Nashville is home to Gibson Guitars and the Gibson Garage is their showcase showroom that has every guitar they make circulating above the customers; just pick one up and play all day.
And no guitar visit would be complete without lunch at *Arnold’s Meat and Three* cafeteria style restaurant and Carter Vintage Guitar across the street. Literally a shed load of guitars ready to be picked up and picked without any hovering sales people. I went in with a somewhat specific interest in a Gibson Dove as my first ever guitar was a Japanese copy and I wanted a real one because … nostalgia. No other reason. I ended up playing over 20 guitars, wanting to buy half a dozen, and left empty handed, giddy, and confused.

#ABR1, #Gibson #ES325 TDW. . Someone who shall remain nameless (but his name starts with @ tom and ends with gibson3783!) asked me why the bridge is on backwards! ABR adjustment screws should point forward toward the neck...it's the "Nashville" tune-o-matic bridge that has the screws pointing towards the tailpiece! . Short answer is: idk! Maybe I popped it on in reverse the last time I restrung it? But the positions of the saddles seem correct for intonation...and the strings are tuning correctly all the way up the neck. Mind you, if I reversed it the saddles would be in the same overall relative positions anyway (bass saddle furthest back, treble furthest forward) so maybe it has been reversed for a while and I just didn't notice? I have had it off to clean the top during restringing, so the most likely answer is that it was my own carelessness in putting it back together! . However...it's tuning correctly so if it ain't broke I won't fix it! . . #gibsones325 #es335 #gibsones335 #semihollow #thinline #guitar #guitars #guitarra #chitarra #guitarre #electricguitar #vintageguitars #vintagegibson #gibsonguitars #tone #guitargear #guitarsdaily #guitarsofinstagram #geartalk #vintagegear #gibsonsofinstagram #guitarphotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CKB4JKaBIUy/?igshid=1xu6g175whq44

John Lennon played Epiphone Casinos, rather than the Gibson equivalent. The Casino E230-T single pickup had a fairly short production run and was discontinued in 1965. "The Casino, introduced in 1961, is the equivalent of the Gibson ES-330 -- a fully hollow thinbody guitar with one or two P-90 pickups. The dot inlay gave way to parallelograms.

Made in Japan's Terada factory, this Casino is in excellent overall condition, especially for a guitar of this age showing just some light scratches around the bridge posts on the top and a few light scratches on the back. It is really white and sounds killer. Includes what I believe is the origi. It weighs 6 lbs 8.5 oz. Nut width 40.2 mm, depth at 1st fret 20.2 mm, at 12th 23.1 mm. The Casino was introduced by Gibson in 1961 and is the equivalent of the ES-330. It has the same pick-up configuration and hollow body construction. The main differences being the white pickguard, and headstock design.

So if you have ever taken a lesson from me in the past 8 or so years, you will recognize this guitar. It’s a 2005 Nashville Tele MIM. I actually bought it off a Gibson sales rep used. I had to replace the bridge pickup shortly after I first got it. It has a Seymour Duncan Hot rails with new pots and an orange drop cap. I haven’t changed strings on it in probably 6-8 months. I polished the frets and noticed how bad they are. Poor girl definitely needs a refret. Plus the clearcoat on the fingerboard is peeling off. It has also been on both my solo records. Plus a ton of trade shows. It’s got dings and dents and it’s beat the hell. What is one of my favorite all time guitars. I hope you had a great Monday. The Black Elvis?
Michael Lydon, The New York Times, 25 February 1968
SAN FRANCISCO —“Will he burn it tonight?” asked a neat blonde of her boyfriend, squashed in beside her on the packed floor of the Fillmore auditorium. "He did at Monterey,” the boy friend said, recalling the Pop Festival at which the guitarist, in a moment of elation, actually put a match to his guitar. The blonde and her boy friend went on watching the stage, crammed with huge silver-fronted Fender amps, a double drum set, and whispering stage hands. Mitch Mitchell, the drummer, came on first, sat down, smiled, and adjusted his cymbals. Then came bassist Noel Redding, gold glasses glinting on his fair, delicate face, and plugged into his amp.
“There he is,” said the blonde, and yes, said the applause, there he was, Jimi Hendrix, a cigarette slouched in his mouth, dressed in tight black pants draped with a silver belt, and a pale rainbow shirt half hidden by a black leather vest.
“Dig this, baby,” he mumbled into the mike. His left hand swung high over his frizz-bouffant hair making a shadow on the exploding sun light-show, then down onto his guitar and the Jimi Hendrix Experience roared into “Red House.” It was the first night of the group's second American tour. During the first tour, last summer, they were almost unknown. But this time two LP’s and eight months of legend preceded them.
The crowds in San Francisco—their three nights here were the biggest in the Fillmore’s history—were drooling for Hendrix in the flesh. They got it: this time he didn't burn his guitar ("I was feeling mild”) but, with the careless, slovenly and blatantly erotic arrogance that is his trademark, he gave them what they wanted.
He played all the favorites, “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady,” “Let Me Stand Next to Your Fire” and "The Wind Cries Mary.” He played flicking his gleaming white Gibson between his legs and propelling it out of his groin with a nimble grind of his hips. Bending his head over the strings, he plucked them with his teeth as if eating them, occasionally pulling away to take deep breaths. Falling back and lying almost prone, he pumped the guitar neck as it stood high on his belly.
He made sound by swinging the guitar before him and just tapping the body. He played with no hands at all, letting his wah-wah pedal bend and break the noise into madly distorted melodic lines. And all at top volume, the bass and drums building a wall of black noise heard as much by pressure on the eyeballs as with the ears.
• • •
The black Elvis? He is that in England. In America James Brown is, but only for Negroes; could Hendrix become that for American whites? The title, rich in potential imagery, is a mantle waiting to be bestowed. Within his wildness, Hendrix plays on the audience’s reaction to his sexual violence with an ironic and even gentle humor. The D.A.R. sensed what he is up to: they managed to block one appearance with the Monkees last summer, because he was “too erotic.” But if Jimi knows about his erotic appeal, he won’t admit it.
"Man, it's the music, that’s what comes first,” he said, taking a quick jerk of Johnny Walker Black in his motel room. “People who put down our performance, they’re people who can’t use their eyes and ears at the same time. They got a button on their shoulder blades that keeps only one working at a time. Look, man, we might play sometimes just standing there; sometimes we do the whole diabolical bit when we’re in the studio and there ain’t nobody to watch. It’s how we feel. How we feel and getting the music out, that’s all. As soon as people understand that, the better.”
• • •
The Jimi Hendrix Experience, now doing a two-month tour (they will be at Hunter College on Saturday and at Stony Brook, L. I., on March 9), was formed in October, 1966, just weeks after Hendrix came to London from Greenwich Village encouraged by former Animal Chas Chandler. Mitchell, 21, came from Georgie Fame’s band, a top English rhythm and blues group, and 22-year-old Redding switched to bass from guitar, which he had played with several small-time bands. Their first job, after only a few weeks of rehearsal, was at the Paris Olympia on a bill with Johnny Hallyday.
Their first record, “Hey Joe,” got to number 4 on the English charts; a tour of England and steady dates in the in London clubs, plus a follow-up hit with “Purple Haze,” made them the hottest name around. Men’s hairdressers started featuring the “Experience style.” Paul McCartney got them invited to the Monterey Pop Festival and they were a smash hit.
But Jimi Hendrix, born James Marshall Hendrix 22 years ago in Seattle, Wash., goes a lot further back. Now hip rock’s enfant terrible, he quit high school for the paratroopers at 16 (“Anybody could be in the Army, T had to do it special, but man, was I bored”). Musically he came up the black route, learning guitar to Muddy Waters records on his back porch, playing in Negro clubs in Nashville, begging his way onto Harlem bandstands, and touring for two years, lost in the bands of rhythm and blues headliners: the Isley Brothers, Joey Dee, Little Richard, and King Curtis. He even played the Fillmore once, but that was backing Ike and Tina Turner and long before the Haight-Ashbury scene.
• • •
“I always wanted more than that,” he said, “I had these dreams that something was gonna happen, seeing the numbers 1966 in my sleep, so I was just passing time till then. I wanted my own scene, making my music, not playing the same riffs.
“Like once with Little Richard, me and another guy got fancy shirts ’cause we were tired of wearing the uniform. Richard called a meeting. ‘I am Little Richard, I am Little Richard,’ he said.‘the King, the King of Rock and Rhythm. I am the only one allowed to be pretty. Take off those shirts.’ Man, it was all like that. Bad pay, lousy living, and getting burned.”
Early in 1966 he finally got to Greenwich Village, where he played at the Cafe Wha as Jimmy James with his own hastily formed group, the Blue Flame. It was his break and the bridge to today’s Hendrix. He started to write songs—he has written hundreds—and play what he calls “my rock-blues-funky-freak sound.”
• • •
“Dylan really turned me on—not the words or his guitar, but as a way to get myself together. A cat like that can do it to you. Race, that was okay. In the Village people were more friendly than in Harlem where it’s all cold and mean. Your own people hurt you more. Anyway, I had always wanted a more open and integrated sound. Top-40 stuff is all out of gospel, so they try to get everybody up and clapping, shouting, ‘yeah, yeah.’ We don’t want to get everybody up. They should just sit there and dig it. And they must dig it, or we wouldn’t be here.”
A John Wayne movie played silently on the television in the stale and disordered room, and Hendrix started alternating slugs of scotch and Courvoisier. He stopped and turned to the window, looking out over San Francisco. “This lookslike Brussels, all built on hills. Beautiful. But no city I’ve ever seen is as pretty as Seattle, all that water and mountains. I couldn’t live there, but it was beautiful.”
Besides his music, Hendrix doesn’t do much. He wants to retire young and buy a lot of motels and real estate with his money. Sometimes he thinks of producing records or going to the Juilliard School of Music to learn theory and composition. In London he lives with his manager, but plans to buy a house in a mews; in his spare time he reads Isaac Asimov’s science fiction. His musical favorites, as he listed them, are Charlie Mingus, Roland Kirk, Bach, Muddy Waters, Bukka White, Albert Collins, Albert King, and Elmore James.
• • •
“Where do you stop? There are, oh man, so many more, all good. Sound, and being good, that’s important. Like we’re trying to find out what we really dig. We got plans for a play-type scene with people moving on stage, but everything pertaining to the song and every song a story.
“We’ll keep moving. It gets tiring doing the same tiling, coming out and saying, ‘Now we’ll play this song,’ and ‘Now we’ll play that one.’ People take us strange ways, but I don’t care how they take us. Man, we’ll be moving. ’Cause man, in this life you gotta do what you want, you gotta let your mind and fancy flow, flow, flow free.”

How to Install a New Tune-o-matic Bridge
Pay close attention to the angle of each string in relation to the tailpiece. The tailpiece should be adjusted so the strings never touch the rear edge of the Tune-o-matic. Contact here can cause tuning problems, so all the strings need to clear the bridge frame. You must have the genuine guitar spare parts to replace any like, wraparound bridge, custom guitar tailpiece, etc.
When the tailpiece is adjusted, I finish filing the string slots. This involves carefully sloping down the back of the slots to allow each string to follow its natural angle as it emerges from the tailpiece to the point where it contacts the saddle.
Adjusting intonation. The final step is to intonate the guitar by moving the new saddles forward or backward in the bridge to shorten or lengthen the vibrating portion of the string. The saddle-intonation adjustment screw is located at the rear of the bridge, and the idea is to move each saddle forward (by turning the screw counterclockwise) or backward (clockwise) using a small screwdriver. (Typically it’s a Phillips or flathead, depending on the make and model of the bridge.)
Here’s how to set the intonation:
1. Using a high-quality electronic tuner, bring each string to pitch. But instead of playing an open string and tuning it, strike the 12th-fret harmonic and tune it to pitch.

Gibson J-45 1957
Gibson J-45 1957 – a cool Roundshoulder Vintage Dreadnought. A fabulous player with a great vintage sound! The Gibson J-45 is the so called workhorse among the Gibson guitar family – it will never let you down, always ready when you need it. It is the most popular and the most sold acoustic guitar! Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Brad Paisley … the list of the famous players is very long. This Gibson J-45 1957 is a real gem with character in appearance and especially in sound. Here you get the ultimate vintage sound. We personally like the sound of this Gibson because it has a very cool and dry vintage tone. It is very open and responsive. The sound is deep and the woods resonate just great. The basses have a lovely growling and it is the perfect guitar for recording, stage or personal use at home. It plays perfectly and is wonderfully adjusted. Low action, straight neck and well preserved frets. As you can see in the pictures the guitar has a very nice vintage look. It is a guitar which has been played and nicely aged. It is in good condition with just the right amount of wear from play and use. A pickguard crack has been repaired and a pickup system has been removed (holes filled as visible in the pictures). It has newer vintage style tuners and the adjustable bridge has been converted to a bridge with bone saddle. This Gibson J-45 comes with a newer case. Gibson – general information: The Gibson Guitar Corporation (Gibson for short) was founded in 1902 and is now based in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. It is one of the oldest and best-known US manufacturers of stringed instruments – banjos, mandolins, guitars, electric guitars and basses – as well as guitar amplifiers. Many of the world’s most famous musicians play and played Gibson instruments. Read the full article

Here was yesterday's project: 2009 #Epiphone 1962 #Wilshire USA #reissue . Made by #Gibson Custom in Nashville, 1 of 100 made. Purchased at @rumbleseatmusic in 2014 (see pic 2 for proof! 😆) . I had taken off all the original hardware years ago because at the time I was into the "Relic" look and I thought the #guitar looked too shiny. I replaced literally everything I could take off myself (bridge, tailpiece, knobs, switch tip and ring, pickup covers and tuners) with aged parts. The only thing I didn't change was the pick guard (you try finding a replacement pickguard* for an #Epi Wilshire! 😂). Nowadays I just want everything to be original. Plus I had been neglecting this guitar and it doesnt deserve it because it's really great! . So yesterday I did a full "restoration" of all the original parts, put on fresh strings and did a set up, and I spent the rest of the day playing it. In other words: a perfect Saturday! . . #epiphonewilshire #wilshireusa #epiphonecoronet #guitars #guitarra #chitarra #guitarre #customshop #gibsoncustom #electricguitar #vintageguitars #vintageepiphone #epiphoneguitars #tone #guitargear #guitarsdaily #guitarsofinstagram #geartalk #vintagegear #gibsonsofinstagram #guitarphotography . * although, I did actually go out and buy a white pickguard blank from allparts, to make myself an aged pickguard...but I never got around to making it! 😆 (at Toronto, Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBsihGGhsxu/?igshid=121l4xeaut0qw

Today on Six-String-Survivors, Peter Frampton’s 1954 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, ‘Phenix.’ (reprinted in part from Guitar Magazine) In 1970, while performing a run of shows at the Fillmore West in San Francisco with the band Humble Pie, guitarist Peter Frampton was having significant problems with his newly-acquired ES-335. After recently switching from a Gibson SG, feedback from the hollow-bodied Gibson had plagued him throughout the band's opening show.
This prompted Mark Mariana, (a fellow musician, and fan of Frampton) to suggest that Peter try out his modified 1954 Les Paul Custom, which was loaned to him for the following nights performance. By the end of the set, Peter was so impressed with the guitar that he offered to buy it on the spot, famously stating of that first night, “my feet never touched the floor.” However, incredibly and generously, Mariana insisted that Frampton accept it as a gift.
Originally, the ‘54 would have had a compliment of bridge P90, and neck AlNiCo pickups, and a gold top. By the time Frampton got ahold of it, the guitar had been refinished in black, the neck shaved, and a trio of early 60′s Gibson patent number humbuckers had been fitted.
The guitar would rarely leave Peter Frampton's side for the next decade, featuring on some of Rock's most memorable and multi-million selling recordings including; Humble Pie's ‘Rock On’ and ‘Frampton Comes Alive’. Peter and the '54 graced the cover of the later, to create an image that is arguably one of the most recognizable of the 1970s.
Frampton's partnership with the instrument looked to have come to an abrupt end during a tour of South America in 1980, as the guitar was thought to have been destroyed in a cargo plane crash near Caracas, Venezuela, that tragically killed all the Frampton crew-members on board. The guitar that had become such an important part of his career was gone forever. Or so it appeared.
Amazingly, it now seems that several of the instruments from the plane crash were saved by locals, and though badly burned on the neck and headstock (see the accompanying picture,) the famous Les Paul spent 30 years ‘undercover’ playing in a local Venezuelan jazz band. Eventually needing some repairs, the instrument was brought to a part-time guitar repairman, who also happened to be a Curacao Customs agent and big fan of Frampton’s, and who immediately recognized Peter's Les Paul.
For the next few years, the local luthier, along with a member of the local tourist board, tried to convince the Venezuelan guitarist to sell the instrument. A negotiation that would continue until November 2011, when facing some financial difficulties, he finally agreed to part with it for a reported fee of close to $5,000.
With the guitar in hand, the two flew out to meet with Frampton to return it to him in person in Nashville, Tennessee. After receiving a few repairs at the Gibson Custom Shop, the '54 Les Paul is now back on the road with Peter Frampton, three decades after it presumably met a fiery end. A true "Phoenix" from the ashes.

The “Leaving Nashville” Mod
A popular #GuitarRepair mod at @ReWindElectric is our “Leaving Nashville” mod, which plugs, fills, redrills, and taps the bridge stud holes on Gibson USA guitars for vintage-style ABR-1 threaded posts, for use with a Burst-era ABR-1 bridge. Also, the tailpiece bushing holes are deepened and longer vintage-length bushings and tailpiece studs are used with a lightweight aluminum tailpiece. A massive upgrade to the acoustic and electric voice of the guitar, as well as an improved look and feel.
