"#love every time we made dave a question and he went all fanficcy #this one and the post-survival one" hello i have a BURNING need to know..... which post-survival question did he answer?
Hi! Sorry for the month-long delay in answering this! I don’t usually get asks on this account so I kept forgetting and say I’d answer as soon as I got to check Dave’s Q&As again, which I kept not being able to check. Anywho, the question I was referring to here was made by Liv on the Q&A session that took place on the 25th of June. You can find the complete recording and transcripts here (along with other fantastic fan-curated resources if you’re new to the fandom.)
Q: If the expedition had been rescued around, say, episode 8/9, and made it home, how do you think the various relationships that developed on screen would have fared back in ““civilization””? Would the intimacies some of these men formed between them persist? I’m also curious to know if you think any of them would resign from the Navy, be it for whatever reason: ethical, practical, physical, to explore other parts of themselves, etc.
I’m gonna try to be as brief as possible because Dave gave a very long response (find the non-abridged version in the link provided above), but this was the meat of it:
Crozier and Blanky would talk endlessly about quitting the Navy but only Crozier would. This doesn’t mean that Blanky would do this comfortably, as he’d already have survived two naval expeditions that turned out badly, so maybe he’d join a whaling ship, even if that would also have gotten under his skin.
He doesn’t think any of the surviving Lieutenants would have come back anywhere close to the poles, but he does think that most of them would have succumbed to the calling of fame and glory, i.e. wanting to return to the sea now that they had been named Commanders or Captains of their own vessels.
He’s not sure if Fitzjames would have been brave enough to stay aside of the Navy, even if during those three months he learnt a lot more about himself that what keeping the same persona for thirty years had brought him. He thinks Fitzjames would have written a “hell of a memoir” as well as a “hell of a military career, and that he would have stayed friends with Crozier, even if some of the things that happened in the Arctic would never have been mentioned again.
Goodsir would return to visit Silna “as often as possible.” Not for romantic reasons, but because there’d have been “a friendship there”. (also, taking into account he is making up all these scenarios after 8 or 9 the tuunbaq would have lived.)
“I think Bridgens and Peglar [smiles] would have worked like dogs to be able to afford some goddamn privacy where they could be together for the rest of their lives. [laughs]”
Pilkington and Des Voeux would have stayed friends.
“Little and Hodgson would be in one another’s lives.” They’d help each other patch themselves up after what happened because they’d both be in denial about everything that went down, helping create “a more palatable story about themselves”.
Sophia would feel like she’d have to choose between Lady Jane and Crozier and would chose the former, especially after the loss of her uncle.
Jopson would have stayed close to Crozier, they’d stay best friends for the rest of their lives.
Golding would commit suicide at some point, he was not equipped to deal with everything that happened and much less to go on living carrying it with him.
David Young’s ring would have been delivered to his sister. (with one of the crystal diamonds having fallen off during the journey.)
Mr Diggle would have been fine and stayed friend with some of the AB’s and midshipmen, but not with anyone else further up the hierarchy.
Collins would have lived a very quiet life, as most of what troubled him was PTSD.
Hartnell would have had a family and lived a quiet life. He’d have stayed close to Manson and from time to time he might have met with Crozier.
Hickey would have ended up in prison if he managed not to ger executed. If Tozer and him had ended up in the same prison they would have avoided each other for years, until they realized they were the one’s more suited for each other’s rest and protection. It’s tricky for Dave to say if they’d have become lovers because he is unsure about Tozer, but it’s prison so HE’LL LET US DECIDE. [ten seconds later he changed his mind] Tozer would have turned to Hickey for that kind of comfort and ended up murdering him, while Hickey convinced himself that he was the one letting himself be murdered. (This is already a very long ask, if you want more details on Hickey’s Vermont sex-cult, ping me and I’ll expand on it, because it was an answer from a different day and I don’t currently have it at hand.)
Gibson wouldn’t have wanted nothing to do with anyone. He might have found some new expedition or a house where he could work in as a domestic servant, but he wouldn’t have told anyone.
Hope this helped!

You're back with the little kisses!! Can I have one for Little/Hodgson, please?
I am!! I didn't really stop, I just didn't have the ability to interact on social media for a minute there. I've still got a few things in my inbox to get round to, but I hope to get them done soon! Thank you so much for the request ^^
Little Kisses: Little/Hodgson
It takes just a look for Edward to know, for the darkness settled around him to fall away. A light within him that had almost gone out answers the playful look in George's eye, warmth filling him as he realises that Geroge has remembered.
"What is it?" he asks, aware of the smile already tugging at his lips. He thought everyone had forgotten.
"It's a surprise," George tells him, grinning, leaning in, his breath soft against Edward's lips. "Close your eyes."
Edward's eyes are already falling closed. His heart soars as George kisses him, lingering, and Edward leaning in to keep him there. He doesn't know what the surprise might be, but, with a kiss, George has made Edward's birthday perfect.

16, 21, 24!
16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate
hm, okay, with regards to The Terror: the friendship between Hodgson and Little! By which I mean also by extension the potential of Hodgelittle as a ship because Hodgson deserves nice things - woe is me, who always settles for unpopular characters!
21. a fandom you're not active in anymore but that you still really like
Ah, definitely Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad! Sometimes I still get likes on my Gusmax fics and feel all warm and fuzzy inside :)
24. how has fandom positively impacted your life?
I've met friends, gone to visit them in other countries, had them over visiting me, had hours upon hours of videocalls and movie nights, and just met so many incredibly creative and lovely people through it! Fandom also inspired me to write and while for now, I don't have an actual novel on my schedule (needs more stewing tbh), that is DEFINITELY going to happen along these years!

"Shoulder kisses" or "smiling before or during kisses" for hodgelittle?
Y’all are giving me excuses to keep writing this modern!au lmao
Slight ns//fw
The first time George and Edward sleep together is a comedy of errors. It happens spontaneously, starting with a few shared kisses in the kitchenette when George is struck by the silly idea of leading Edward in a ridiculous, two-left-feet waltz. The kisses are longer and more frequent by the time they stumble onto the piano bench, and they intensify even more as they migrate to the couch and eventually the bed.
1. They forget about Neptune.
It is not until the dog is roused from his nap by their rather athletic making-out that Neptune deems it necessary to save his owner from the gangly blond man on top of him. Edward, red-faced, his trousers already undone, quickly takes Neptune back to his own flat next door.
2. George remembers that he does not have any condoms.
This information he recalls only once he and Edward are almost entirely divested of their clothes and, to his horror, in the thick of things. In a quavering voice, Edward says he has some. His eyes are staring down at the duvet, and most certainly not at any single body part of George’s or his own. George lends him a pair of joggers, and Edward hastily makes the trip next door again.
3. George has a (very much mild, absolutely not serious or mood-killing) panic attack that he has never had sex with a man before Edward.
When Edward returns with a couple condoms stashed in the pocket of the joggers, he notices George’s distress, and the two of them pause in their activities to have a heart-to-heart, in which George admits feelings stronger than he initially realized, and in which Edward looks about ready to cry. George feels immediately guilty, but Edward hugs him and laughs when they kiss again.
4. It does not last long.
George apologizes profusely, the blush spreading so far on his face that tips of his ears feel hot. Edward shakes his head, looking as relaxed and pleased as a cat who’s found the cream of the crop, and pulls him down for a kiss, smiling against George’s lips. Once George’s embarrassment fades, Edward guides his hands, showing what he likes and where to touch.
5. It is more than he could ever have hoped for.
Edward still feels like a dream sometimes, even as their relationship extends into months. They doze afterwards, George waking with a start to find Edward rolled away. He scoots closer under the sheets and presses a soft kiss on Edward’s shoulder, on an isolated freckle near his neck. When Edward stirs, George wraps his arms around him, whispering a promise into the warm skin of his back that he plans to never let go, not for a long while yet.

"The number of hours we have together is actually not so large. Please linger near the door uncomfortably instead of just leaving. Please forget your scarf in my life and come back later for it."

9, 15 and 29 for the writer's meme
9. Which fic has been the hardest to write?
from the skin to the soul has been incredibly difficult for me to get through, mostly because my perfectionist brain freezes up every time I sit down to work on it. It makes completing and posting an update feel really good, but it’s frustrating how long it’s taking me.
for other ones that were pretty challenging, A Sunday Aboard HMS Terror also took me a long time (it was pretty much finished in May ‘19 except for one scene, so it sat in my wip folder until rare pair week in November) because it was very introspective and for a character I hadn’t really written up to that point.
15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?
several come to mind: I would love to see my gothic au on film, my first terror fic poised on the edge of world (especially since I’ve got a ton more scenarios for that post-apocalyptic polar station in mind) would also be really neat, or I’d love to see a dopey rom-com for the hodgelittle modern au
29. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?
😳😳😳😳 oh gosh I have some very near and dear favorites that I don’t know if I could even hope to hold a candle to.
The Wolf’s Bridegroom by @beatriceinmessina is such a lovely story with a fascinating backdrop. I’ve been flirting with a werewolf fic myself for a while now, so adding to this already fascinating verse would be a lot of fun.
speaking of mythological creatures and whatall, I know that @arcticelves has explored joplittle mermaids more than once, but I’m still rather fond of the scenario where Little was a mermaid and Jopson a young man living in the nearby village discovering him. Maybe some follow-up rendezvous?  👀
(and it’s a given from me that I absolutely adore @ferrames another new world series; it’s such a great sandbox, but I wouldn’t even begin to think that I could add to what’s already a rich, vibrant story)
