23.11.23 | the grand hobonichi conspiracy!!!
i finally broke into my hobonichi hon a5. i nearly didn't film a single second because it was two in the morning and my first instinct has never been to record what i'm doing. so many of my favourite things from my planners, fountain pens, howl's moving castle, and my little ghost friend are in a singular photo. i'm currently thinking about the fact i might need another planner, though.

I am transitioning away from using a bullet journaling this year because I have gotten tired of drawing out my spreads every week. I decided to get some Hobonichi notebooks for 2023. Letâs see how long I can last without crawling back to my bujo.
NOTEBOOKS FOR 2023
Hobonichi Classic - Prayer Journal
Hobonichi Weeks (White) - Memory Keeper
Hobonichi Weeks (Pink) - Planner
Grid Notebook - Daily Log
Currently I am using a Kunisawa for my daily logs, but I honestly do not want to buy another expensive notebook after this one is full. So, I think that I will order a field notes set or get some of the weeks memo pads for when I ran out of space in my non-mega hobonichi weeks.

Diary for 2025
This is my Filofax, Domino, for 2025.
I have got several Filofax binders. But I am happy just to own them and keep them in the boxes. Good leather ones are too good. This one, Domino pale pink, is soft and light. The price was reasonable. Actually I used it before, around 2017/18. It is back now, for 2025!
My favourite diary refills are monthly (calendar) and weekly (one week in two pages, diary left and memo right) from Bindex.
I like Filofax-type planners and binders, to keep my schedule and notes. But because thick leather one is rather bulky and heavy, I tend to keep them at home and use another thin binder to carry always in my bag. "Luft" from Knoxbrain in the right. I bought it years ago. The series were discontinued, and changed to Plotter now. It cannot hold so many pieces of paper. So I have only set monthly refill (calendar) and rulled paper in it.
And I also like EDIT daily notebook as a one day in one page. I thought I did not need "Daily" because I do not have so many things to write everyday. But since I tried ă»ăŒæ„æćžł (Hobonichi Techo) and EDIT for a while I found it good to keep records by attaching receipts, memo, tickets and other small paper staff on each page. I tried a couple of other daily notebooks later. ă»ăŒæ„æćžł is ... I love their colourful covers. But original is a bit small and cousin is too large and heavy. So I think EDIT B6 is the best for me. It would be fun to decorate my pages with illustrations too.

This is how my 2024 spread for January/February came out! I use the back memo pages of my Hobonichi Weeks to summarize months. A little different this year, compiling 2 months on a calendar.
I don't use anything fancy to print, just a regular HP printer with the ink subscription (bitter about the inflated cost increase). Some calendars came out a little funny because it's an old printer, but I love it.
As simple as it looks, the process of editing the calendars put my college knowledge to the test, honestly. @.@ Some parts of the illustrations, particularly with May/June and November/December, I had to redraw and many hours using the stamp tool on Clip Studio Paint. Amateurish, but enlightening (it would've been easier to use a 1996 calendar, but... :x). I'd like for this to be an annual process if old calendars catch my fancy for the year. If there are any requests, I may put my hand in it. I picked Cardcaptor Sakura in particular since lately I've been watching it with my sister and I've always loved it. đ„°
Edited an old Cardcaptor Sakura calendar from 2000 to fit 2024 for my planner this year, but wanted to share!
Admittingly, I spent way too long editing this and it's a bit wonky some places, but I hope you can find use for it. Enjoy at your own discretion! ^u^

Hobonichi 2020
In another three months or so, weâre about to welcome the year 2020. To prepare for the challenging yet exciting year ahead, a lot of planning and scheduling must be done. To help me with that, I got myself a Hobonochi weeks planner!!!
In the coming year, I donât think I would have as much opportunity to do a daily log for the Hobonichi original like this year. Also, I have decided to useâŠ

Frequently Used.
People by are nature a little nosey and we spend a lot of time trawling through Instagram and watching countless YouTube videos looking at different stationery tools and set-ups - me included. Therefore todayâs post will share with you some of my frequently used tools and how I use them.
Paper.
I shall begin with paper as this dictates many of the other elements of my stationery use. I have numerous notebooks in use at one time, that all serve a purpose. It also means I get to enjoy several different items at one time.
Pocket Notebooks.
I have three pocket notebooks on the go at one time that are carried about with me most of the time. I have two Field Notes memo books in the aim to use my stash. One is used as a journal and the other for sketching. At the moment I also have a Nock Co pocket notebook as my to do list.
Planner.
In my previous post I outlined how I am using my 2020 planners so I wonât labour the point here, but I have the Hobonichi Weeks for organisation, the Travelers Company weekly + memo refill for journaling and the Stalogy A6 notebook...full use still being worked on.
Midori MD Paper B6 Slim Blank Notebook.
This notebook doesn't really have a name but its more of an occasional notebook and I think one that may be in use for many years. In here I write down things that just wonât stay out of my head. Theyâve touched a nerve in some way, hit me, stunned me...any of those things. I write the date, what the quote is and where I found it. This helps me to add some context to the quote but also so I can find it again later on if I need to.
Pencils.
I have been using a lot of pencils lately as I am using Field Notes memo books so much. I think a pencil is the perfect pairing for any Field Notes or pocket notebook. I don't have to consider the paper quality or worry about feathering and bleed through. There is also an element of consistency there as well.
For sketching I have been using the Blackwing MMX and a Caran dâAche Sketcher Non-Photo Blue Pencil. I rotate between these two depending on how I feel. If I think I will ink something I tend to use the blue pencil, if not the Blackwing. I have a new appreciation for the Blackwing MMX with the softness of the graphite and how this can be altered depending on how youâre using it. I guess I am learning the more I draw.
For notes in my Field Notes I rotate through numerous different pencils. The Caran dâAche Edelweiss, Blackwing 54, 24, 811, 211 and 602âs tend to be favourites, the Staedtler Mars Lumograph in H, Mitsubishi Uni Star in H and the Tombow Mono 100 in HB. I tend to like a firmer graphite for note taking rather than feeling like the graphite is wearing away too quickly. There is also the benefit of less smearing.
Pens.
For my Midori papers and planners I tend to go with pens. I still love using fountain pen and ink, the luxurious feel of it on the paper, the feedback you get and the endless customisation options. But I also explore other pens.
Zebra Sarasa Clip in the Vintage colours are still my favourite gel pens. The ink handles well, the colours are fab and they give a great slim line.
Pilot Custom Heritage 92 (medium) and Sailor Blue Black ink is one of my most used fountain pen and ink combinations. The matching is almost perfect I adore this blue black ink. For journaling, note taking at work or writing in my occasional book its a wonderful combination.
Pelikan M400 in Brown Tortoiseshell and Sailor Shikiori Waga-Ugusau is another stable combination. This pen is very valuable to me and I love its colour and the green ink works perfectly with it.
Retro 51 Pen Addict Pastel Shiba is another great pen I use when a fountain pen is a bit inconvenient. I am not a die hard Retro 51 user but the style of this pen is everything I like and I have been using this a lot.
Drawing pens that I use range from the Sakura Pigma Micron in 02 and 03, to the Uni-Pin in the 02 to the Pentel Sign Pen. Depending on the level of detail I am looking for I rotate through these drawing pens.
Accessories.
For all of my pencils when on the move I like to use a pencil cap. Tina from Fuelled by Clouds and Coffee recently sent me a few simple pencil caps which have been working really well. The Blackwing Point Guard is one that doesn't seem to work so well...plus itâs totally over priced.
Band of rubber - simple but it keeps my notebooks together and easy to grab from my bag when I am on the move.
Hightide pen roll keeps everything together when I am out. I did just throw several pencils and pens into my bag lose but it was a nightmare finding what I wanted. I like this pen roll and itâs material and really slim.
Faber-Castell eraser is there every now and again for my sketching. I like this particular one as it seems to work well with most pencils and it is small.
Brass bull dog clips are essential for my Travelers Notebook use. It keeps the notebook open, lets my ink dry, lets me decorate with ease. I have them clipped to my Travelers Notebook so I have them with me always.
The Superior Labor A5 Leather Folio in light brown is a beautiful folio that I use when I need to carry a notebook and a few items together. It tends to get used when I go into the office the most but I love this folio.
Washi tapes because theyâre amazing.
Overall thoughts.
I hope you have enjoyed this post and a peak into what I use regularly. Itâs a lot and at the same time it is pretty simple. I like to use stationery for different tasks and get enjoyment from so many different writing tools. The past few months using pencils has been lovely. I love their simplicity and their versatility. It has also meant I appreciate my fountain pens when I do use them.
The items here are pretty stable and as time has gone on I am less concerned with acquiring new stationery, the buzz has gone. I prefer to really use and spend time with those items that I have sought out.

trying out new opportunities
this is going to be a looooong introduction so please prepare your coffee or tea before reading.Â
Iâve been a huuuge hoarder of notebooks ever since I was a kid (and able to handle money lol) and imagined myself journaling using those notebooks I bought. Iâll only write on a few pages and then forget about the notebook and put them on my pile of other unused notebooks. Iâve been wanting to journal but I donât know how to write, how to explain myself. Back in my day, internet is not how it is now. So I am unaware of sooo many options or ways of journaling.Â
Now that I have a âbuying powerâ I tried to journal on my small notebook (a6 with vertical weekly spread) last quarter of 2019 and figured this size wasnât my size. Covid happened and I got demotivated to journal as all my plans for 2020 has been cancelled. Watching lots of youtube videos about art and journaling in general made me go back in to journaling, this time looked for something bigger, not too much but I can also put my monthly plans in it. I decided to go with an unbranded planner. I didnât know anything about those famous, expensive planners like hobonichi so I figured this will work. As I am using the planner, I feel like I write more and more words everyday, that I would use the weekly spread as my checklist for work and a summary of what happened on that day. I realized that this current planner is not for me (again) lol.Â
Around october 2020, I discovered hobonichi and IMMEDIATELY fell in love with it! I thought the a5 is a very good size, but boy, was I wrong. again. I feel like Iâve wasted a lot of money already and now I still keep on using it both for work and personal use. I donât really push myself to write everyday as it can be very tiring. I realized that itâs a big commitment and I shouldâve go with the weeks or the a6 size instead.Â
I also discovered that not all journals should have long paragraphs in it. Not everyone (including me) can write so much in a day. I am not a good speaker in person, so writing to express how I feel is really difficult. I am so happy that I saw some youtubers expresses themselves through papers, stickers, stamps, and washi tapes. not everything can be expressed by words. Some are through pictures, or a combination of all the elements mentioned above. I feel like this is the way/option that would work for me for now.
Now, that is just an introduction. I remember how happy I would feel receiving letters, or receiving stationery items because my parents thought that collecting those when I was a kid was just a waste of money (they always thought collecting something that not useful to them is just a waste of money, so they really donât support us for collecting things. But thatâs a different issue and a different story iâd love to tell some other time). And I have a bunch of stationery items that I recently collected. Iâve decided to make my own brand and sell stickers and other stationery items like memo pads, journal kits, and wax seals.
I am sooo excited as some tools are already with me and some are in transit. I am planning to start on May and I hope this time it will be successful âš

I was asked how I plan to Bullet Journal in my #HobonichiTecho 2018. For 2017, I've been using a single #Apica CD notebook with a week overview. I use the Future Log to note events more than a month ahead, and to give a big picture overview of the year. The Future Log is divided over 4 pages. I don't bother with a key because I only use â, * and âand I know I mean "to-do", "must do today" and "done" respectively. I have about 4 index pages where I note which pages have the different topics. And I write out the week overview myself. The examples are all given. (No actual pages since some of that information is privileged.) Since I've been able to use one journal for a year, I decided to switch to the #Hobonichi. Now, the question is how to use the #bujo system which I like a lot. Turns out, that's easy. The only thing I'm giving up is the week overview by switching to daily pages in the Hobonichi. For me, the crucial parts of the #bulletjournal are the #index and page numbers. Therefore, I'll use the yearly index pages as an index which, in turn, will refer to the daily page on which something important happened, like paying car insurance or a work event. There are a few blank pages in the Hobonichi right before daily pages start, and those will be used to list current cases (privileged information, so not showing that). When I decide how to use the back memo pages, I will use the half page index to note the page number for each topic. Again, a key is not needed since I'll stick to â, * and â on the daily pages. That's my habit, and it's worked out well so far. Finally, the Future Log will be the monthly calendar pages.

I donât like taking art classes, to put it bluntly. Â Iâve tried different formats, in person and online, and my interest always wanes.
I once took a fundamentals of drawing class at a local art studio. Â It lasted about eight weeks, and I only finished because I forced myself to â it was expensive, and I had to show my actual face. Â Everyone else seemed to be into it, and I felt like I must be missing something, an important artist gene that instills a fondness for common objects. Â We had to draw things like folding tables, painted white wine bottles, eggs, and kitchen utensils (gag me with that spoon). Â Even though I learned some useful things in that class, mostly about cast shadow and good pencils, I resolved then to figure out how approach art another way.
Iâm someone who wants to learn a wide variety of things. Â When I heard this great TEDx talk about multipotentialites, I identified and felt a sense of relief.
So when Skillshare approached us about trying their platform, I figured I would try it because there are multiple specific things Iâm interested in improving and/or learning. Skillshare works for my ways. Â Iâve found that I need the basics as a springboard, and can then figure out the rest. Â Skillshare also works for people who are really drawn to one or two subjects and want to pursue them to their heartâs content. Keep reading to learn about my experience with Skillshare and to redeem a free 2-month trial.
For those of you who are not familiar with Skillshare:
Skillshare is an online learning community for creators and entrepreneurially-minded individuals, with more than 17,000 classes in design, business, photography, and more.
Everyone can take a class, try a project, and even teach a class themselves.
Premium Membership begins around $8 a month for unlimited access to learning.
17,000- that is a staggering number! Â Choose away!
DoodlewashÂź is about all things watercolor, but because of what I shared above, some of the classes I found an interest in werenât necessarily watercolor related. Â I like that I can take a class on my lunch hour (most Skillshare classes are 30-45 minutes long). My focus around the time of writing this was learning botanical sketching and illustration techniques for a new herb and flower journal that Iâm starting.
My style tends to be a bit weedy and wild. Iâm not looking to change it, but add to it for keeping a different type of journal. These are standard for me and in a Hobonichi Techo.
I wanted to learn to be a little cleaner and illustrate. Â I used a Stillman & Birn Epsilon Series here.
I completed these with the help of two classes- Botanical Line Drawing the Cactus & Succulent Edition with instructor Peggy Dean- it was nice to focus on the clean and simple lines in this one. Â She went over 20 different cacti! Watercolor Herbs with instructor Louise De Masi was another great class- the video had lovely sweeping views. De Masi went over three different types of herbs and I learned how to layer on several different colors of watercolor to add depth. Â In explaining her process she offered a way Iâve never considered to get an image down on paper- tracing from your own photo. Â I was happy with how my first Rosemary try came out, it only gets better from here! Both classes helped me to get closer to my goals.
I checked out Logo Design with Draplin: Secrets of Shape, Type and Color, from Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co. Heâs a passionate character who, among other things, designs for Field Notes memo books. Iâm a fan of those little books and always have one in my bag.
There were so many classes on hand lettering and brush lettering, lots of basic watercolor technique classes, and ll kinds of classes on things like digital art, how to turn your ideas into a high growth startup, and even one called How to Make French Macarons (I love those delicate little cookies). Â There are tons of experts teaching on Skillshare as well like- Seth Godin and Guy Kawasaki. You get the idea.
The classes I looked at were anywhere from only nine minutes to almost two hours. Â Classes can be saved to come back to later. Â There was a nice feature where the classes could be narrowed down by length of time, say if you only had 15-30 minutes, it would populate the classes that fit that criteria. Â Eat lunch, take a quick class, and end up with a little sketch. Classes are broken into helpful and manageable segments, so itâs easy to watch certain parts, and come back later to pick up where you left off, or skip over parts. Â In the event that you are feeling speedy or slow, the play speed of the video can be adjusted. Instructors share what supplies they are using, so itâs a great way to learn about those and decide if itâs worth it to you to make a supply purchase. Â Instructors can be communicated with to answer questions. Â People share their work by uploading projects, itâs nice to see what other people have learned. You can also complete your own project and upload it to Skillshare and receive feedback from others.
I only viewed one super short class in which  I thought the video, instruction and sound quality werenât great (which is hard to avoid with over 17,000 classes). All the others I watched were really well done though.  Like anything in life, use your discernment.  I like that if I find one instructor I really like, I could click on the instructorâs profile and find all the other classes that they offer.  To sum up, not only is Skillshare a great way to learn new skills, itâs also a way to find inspiration if your creativity isnât at its peak, or you are experiencing a creative block.
Try Skillshare Premium for two months- free â by clicking here.
Itâs winter, meaning itâs a great time stay warm inside taking classes. It might also make a nice gift.
The best part about all of this- there is no spoon.
Happy painting and sketching!
SPECIAL FEATURE: Skillshare Classes I donât like taking art classes, to put it bluntly.  Iâve tried different formats, in person and online, and my interest always wanes.
