State of the Pod: New Special and Hit the Bricks' Future

Hello everyone!

First, I'm happy to let you all know (if you haven't heard by now) that there's a new special episode out right now! Intermission: I'm Still Here.

This new episode is a prequel, of sorts, that tells the story of how the Wizard came to Oz (at least, as far as Hit the Bricks is concerned). Oz fans will note that this version of the story features details usually overlooked by most adaptations such as Oz's royal family, the Swyne family, Omaha, and yes even Mombi. It does not feature James Franco. 

It features a great deal of new cast members, too, like Christopher Dole (Arden), Karim Kronfli (The Amelia Project, The Magnus Archives), Josh Rubino (CARAVAN, Rebel Robin: Surviving Hawkins), Marnie Warner (The Way We Haunt Now, Where the Stars Fell), and Benji Buckley (Dark Deity, Full Dive RPG).

Why are we on Nebula? Well, kind of a long story, but there are a few reasons. Full disclosure: I've been working at Nebula for five years and I'm the vice president of content development over there. I've always kept my work life and my creative life separate, but as I return to making Hit the Bricks in the little free time I have it dawned on me that it would be very weird to produce new shows and not have them be on the streaming service I produce shows on for a living. 

Not for nothing, I really love the way we handle podcasts over at Nebula. The shows themselves exist in two feeds, one private and one public. The public feeds are for everyone, and keeps our shows excessible (I believe putting podcasts totally behind a paywall often does more harm than good and kills plenty of services that had potential). The private feeds are for Nebula subscribers and feature episode early and ad free and if you're subscribed to Nebula you get access to SO MANY THINGS like Nebula originals, classes, and generally extended versions of videos from the creators you love. Podcasts are just a nice cherry on top. 

Anyway, you might be wondering what this means for the show and what happens next. To be honest...it depends.

I haven't exactly been quiet about the trajectory of the show. We started off strong with   pilot that was the buzz of the indie audio scene for a while. Then, once the show actually premiered, COVID hit and we never recovered. Hit the Bricks is sitting at just under 40k downloads, and while I'm thankful for every single one of them, other shows that came out around the same time in our circle have far surpassed those numbers much earlier in their runs.

Everyone who's worked on this show has done so with hearts full of love and that hard work shines through. However, and maybe this is selfish on my part, but it's getting harder and harder to justify putting all that effort and time (and money) into a show that just isn't catching on the way we had hoped. 

No final decisions have been made about a potential next season. It's written, mostly, and people are interested in returning but the numbers just aren't there yet. New people find the show every day, though, so hope springs eternal.

Regardless, we're still here.
