I also found out what type of knife it actually is... it's a meat cutting knife but it's meant to be a pair. This sweet, hand-forged chefs knife is forged in the style of a Northern European kitchen knife inspired by an archeological find in Scandinavia dating over 1,000 years old. I did add some of my own twist to the knife, by adding in a twist in the handle. I find having these swirling sections on the back of the blade helps to act as a bit of palm swell to better fill up your hand. The edges were all chamfered to allow it to still be comfortable. This knife was forged with an 80CRV2 core, a 15N20 wrap and then a wrought iron jacket and has a blued steel finish. It's got a sharp 9" cutting edge and a 5" handle. Its overall length is 14" and it weighs in at 8.4 oz. Secrets of the #celtic #ring #knife by @joshaweston 1) I have found it to work best if you start by isolating the handle section first. 2) Forge out the ring and leave a chuck in between the rind and blade for the "palm-swell" grip. 3) Between the ring and bulge is forged round but it transitions to square between the bulge and blade. 4) Full flat grind with small appleseed cutting edge (make sure it distal tapers all the way down the spine, unlike a seax, which stays consistent to the break). 5) Bonus points for scribing in celtic pattern work (join @cedarlore #patreon to get access to a well documented history of celtic #knotwork #patterns for inspiration) Have fun and enjoy the challenge! Love having that relaxed early morning time to sketch. Here are three historically inspired cooking knives. The one on the right was found in Pompeii, the middle is a combination of a Roman kitchen knife blade shape on a Celt-ibero handle, and the one to the left is a Northern Germanic knife. All these knives help to inspire me as I make in my shop. Drawing them helps me get a better, more intimate feel for the knife, its balance and its subtle intricacies. I am taking a morning to reset my creative energy and will make some pattern welded steel billets for some upcoming builds.
