Lately, I haven't been able to shake this sword from my head. It's beyond my skill set at the moment... or rather it's beyond my time set. It will have to wait in the recesses of my brain until I get some time to work it out into reality. #joshaweston #thepxsmith #historicalknives #historicalsword #history #sword #gold @rothenburgtourism (at Rothenburg ob der Tauber) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsWtyLZhlC5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gme5wvvre68g

After my weekly Sword Art Webinars, I occasionally presents an informal "Show & Tell" of an antique Chinese Sword. In this presentation he shares a Chinese Shuangshoujian, Long Sword or Two-Handed Jian that he is working on restoring, showing what the sword looks like pre-restoration.

The Ming period ran from 1368 to 1644, so examples of period jian are quite rare and are presumably often refit. Example of armor from the Dynasty are almost nonexistent. Fortunately we can turn to period paintings for a look at the arms and armor of the time. This illustration is a close up from the Cónglánhuàn Jī Tú (丛兰宦迹图). It show a high official (Cong Lan 丛兰) in a scale armor vest with a typical Ming jian at his hip. The jian exhibits features common to Ming jian, namely that banded scabbard, the narrow shaped guard, and the open pommel with sword tassel running through it.

I am quite pleased with this early Qing, open work Hushou (sword guard) I recently acquired. It shares some decorative elements with a guard mounted on the Nurhaci’s dao. Nurhaci (1559-1626) was the founder of the Qing dynasty. Dating from circa 1650-1700, this guard has design elements that we see on later 18th century Qing guards, such as double concentric radiate rim, and elements that appear unique to the period. Those unique elements are the eight “jewels” aligned with the eight directions, four being round and four lozenge shaped. The rectangular washer seat at the center of this guard is one of the features that identifies this guard as Chinese. However, it has clearly been reworked for mounting on a Japanese blade.
Many early Qing and even late Ming guards are misidentified as Japanese tsuba. Those we encountered in Japan today made ti there as part of active trade between Japan and China. I collect these guards as references for my work designing historically accurate Chinese swords that we forge at Seven Stars Trading Co.

Working on Thanksgiving...
Enjoying some free time during Thanksgiving, sketching out a new design for a sword guard. I am working on a new design for another project with Ryan Sword, a Ming General's Jian. The guard will have a pair of dragons and is inspired by a late Ming iron Hushou (sword guard) I recently acquired. This example had been remounted on a Japanese sword at some point, possibly have been acquired as a trophy during the Imjin Wars.
