For creative writing purposes, can you go into what a typical day is for a professor? Like what their teaching schedule looks like, when most fit in their research time, etc?
Ahaha, well. I don't want to just say "you can completely make it up," but also.... you can pretty much just make it up, and what is the case for one professor is definitely not going to be true for another. I have known people who will send emails at 1am and/or 4am, and actually finding and fitting in research time for most academics is also "lololololol what." So I can give you a roster of typical daily academic tasks and categories, and then let you know if that if you want to throw them up in the air and scatter them around in literally whatever-the-fuck order, there is probably a beleaguered academic who has done that, but with an even worse sleep schedule. So:
Most permanent faculty at a university are hired as assistant (tenure-track) professors. Once they pass the tenure-committee review (usually about 5 years into the job) they are appointed as associate (tenured) professors. Full professors are considerably senior and/or have been in the field for a long time and have a distinguished service record, excluding various wunderkinds who get it early (but are not common).
If the faculty is just teaching one class a semester or has an irregular appointment, i.e. they step in to teach when the university needs them, they are adjunct professors. You can gain a lot of cred and/or commiserating groaning in your AO3 comments by complaining about how little money the adjunct faculty makes, how erratic their schedule is, and how there is generally little-to-no actual career advancement possible in that position, unless they manage to reapply to a permanent post.
There are also a lot of Visiting Assistant Professors (and similar title), for 2- or 3-year/non-permanent appointments. Many institutions now also offer 1-year VAPs with only a possibility of renewal for 1 additional year or not at all. Those institutions should go straight to hell.
Most professors have 3/3 teaching loads, i.e. they'll teach 3 classes per semester (assuming winter/spring semester). Others have 2/2/2 loads for trimesters (also known as quarters). It can be more, i.e. 4/4, but that's for sucky entry-level teaching-only positions and someone in that role would be unlikely to have any research or service (i.e. institutional committee or internal college) commitments. They would probably also mostly be teaching introductory or freshman-year general survey courses. It depends on how much you want to torture your fictional academic.
Free food? Yes. You will see a healthy amount of the department there, whether faculty or student.
Please remember to have your fictional academic receive approximately 50 student emails a day wherein they ask something that is clearly answered in the syllabus or on the course website, and to see how polite they can possibly be in telling said student this.
Most grading is now done online, so the red pen is only metaphorical, but you can leave SO many Pointed Comments on Canvas Speed Grader. But if you want to torture Dr. Blorbo, you can have the e-grading system suddenly stop working, so they have to grade three classes' worth of introductory freshman history essays by hand. Not based on real events.
Likewise, there will be endless bullshit with the dean's office and/or central university administration, wherein there will be so many Urgent Budget Updates and Breaking News From The Chancellor and We Regret To Inform You We Cannot Hire Someone For That Position.
Related to the budget woes: they will ask you to do things like "make sure you print on both sides of the paper!" or otherwise "economize." Contemplating murder is acceptable and encouraged.
The administrative assistant in each department holds the entire department together. They will be extremely indispensable. Your fictional academic, if they know what's good for them, will befriend that person and/or grovel at their feet. Said person is also usually responsible for scheduling classrooms, which can cause all kinds of juicy drama in the academic fandom if there is One Particular Classroom that everyone hates and lo and behold, Dr. Blorbo is stuck there yet again. They will then probably also fire off multiple passive-aggressive emails attempting to correct the problem. The administrative assistant can grant and/or ignore these requests at their discretion, depending on how much beef they have with Dr. Blorbo and/or how motivated they are to solve their problems.
Department meetings! Who asked for them? Nobody! Who has to attend them? Everybody! They go on for two hours every other week (possibly more depending on how meeting-happy your department chair is) and you will wish for death!
Likewise, the department staff sending out passive-aggressive emails about how they really NEED one more volunteer for (insert university event here). Dr. Blorbo, if they are smart, will delete these emails and pretend they never saw them, but sometimes it may be unavoidable. Bitching and moaning will follow.
For research: it really depends on what academic field Dr. Blorbo is in, since the hard sciences, etc. look quite different and I, as a humanities person, can't speak to that. Most academics aim to fairly regularly publish a piece in a peer-reviewed journal; you can check Dr. Blorbo's field to see what journals they might be trying to submit a journal article (usually max. 8000 words, sometimes more) to.
This will go through a process called Peer Review, wherein two anonymous academics review your work (also anonymized to them) to make sure that you are not talking out of your ass. It is a running joke that Reviewer 2 will always, ALWAYS be more grumpy and critical and otherwise annoying. Invoking the specter of Dr. Blorbo receiving a peer review evaluation for their article will send a shiver down every academic's spine.
If Dr. Blorbo has recently finished their PhD, they may be working on converting their PhD thesis into an academic monograph. The most horrible part of this process, hands down, is reviewing proofs to make an index. Don't ask me how I know this.
However, academic monographs take a lot of time and work and most academics are mostly focused on publishing journal articles, book chapters (in collected volumes) or editing/working in collaboration with other projects.
Likewise: Dr. Blorbo will have to write book reviews. This is accomplished by the very scientific method of subscribing to various industry publications and/or email lists that will sometimes send out lists of books that need to be reviewed and solicit people to sign up. You will then receive a hard copy of the book (usually) and have 3 months or so to read it and write a review. The first 2 months of this, give or take, will consist of the book sitting untouched on the academic's desk as they remind themselves that they still have plenty of time to do it.
There can, however, be INCREDIBLE beef in book reviews, and while the standards of professional courtesy dictate that you don't go great-guns-flaming calling someone else in your field a moron (in more technical language), sometimes it is unavoidable.
Do they get paid for any of this extra intellectual work? Lol. No. No they do not. They don't get paid enough for their actual job.
Dr. Blorbo will inevitably hear some Hot Gossip about what nonsense has recently happened at which field-specific conference (where academics go to present research papers and network with other academics and make regrettable decisions at the open bar). They will then rush to secretly text all their other academic friends with OOH JUICY ACADEMIC DRAMA. Their friends will do the same whenever the opportunity arises to reciprocate.
Removing the coffee machine from the break room/faculty kitchen is grounds for mutiny.
Anyway. I am sure there are many, MANY more, but if you want an authentic slice of long-suffering academic life for Dr. Blorbo, this is all a good place to start.

So the Open Library decision came down, and there's already a lot of hand wringing about it. Before you start waving torches about how this is all moneygrubbing Big Publishing flexing its muscle, I'd beg you to actually read the facts of the case. From the decision:
Tumblr media
This appeal presents the following question: is it "fair use" for a nonprofit organization to scan copyright-protected print books in their entirety, and distribute digital copies online in full, for free, subject to a one-to-one-loaned ratio between its print copies and the digital copies it makes available at any given time, all without authorization from the copyright-holding publishers or authors? Applying the relevant privisions of the Copyright Act as well as binding Supreme Court and Second Circuit precedent, we conclude the answer is no. We therefore AFFIRM. (the previous decision). 1. This has never been about the Wayback Machine, Archive.org's historical collections, or out of print books. NOTHING in the court decisions prevent them from continuing that work. 2. This has never been about "libraries being able to have and lend books." 3. Yes. libraries do have ebooks and lend them out. They pay for the ebooks. There are licensing terms. 4. Open Library did not pay licenses. They rebuffed publishers when they were approached about it. They therefore want to claim they are a library without acting like a library.
Oh, and they were marketing this as a positive to other libraries: "get books for free! Don't pay! 5. The issue specifically is about new books, not the out of print stuff.
Here's the thing about that. Unless it ends up being a new timeless classic, most books make most of their money in their first year or so. If sales aren't good, it can impact future book contracts.
Here's the other thing about that. Most authors earn four figures or less annually for their writing, even if they are publishing with a major house. They almost always have to have at least one other job, and often several. I know so many writers who have several jobs just to make rent every month. Often, the money they get for a advance is the only money they ever see from the book - if they even get an advance, which is increasingly rare these days.
Thus, if that license is not purchased, it does hurt them - directly.
"But it's one license at one library!" Cool cool, can we just take a week of your salary and tell you "it's just one week, you won't miss it?" 6. Big Publishing! Money Grubbing Fiends!
Yeah, the big publishers did mount this lawsuit. Do you honestly fucking think that independent midlist writers making four figures a year had the money to hire attorneys to do it? They had the money, they did what the authors alone could not. 7. But people couldn't get the book otherwise.
Okay. Some of those books are like $2 as ebooks or used paper copies. If you can't afford that, there's this wonderful thing called the public library, where you can get a free library card and access to books online for free. Books that have been paid for. If you don't have access to a library in another country - I'm sorry. But this isn't the answer. Maybe when it comes to media you don't always get everything you want all the time. You know, like in the real world with grownups. I'd also add that you can keep using Archive.org's other services that were not questioned here which give you access to lots of other media, with older out of print books, magazines, etc. There are other websites like Issu which offer publications online for free, LEGALLY. This decision isn't the Last Chance Saloon for media access.
I know that a lot of you think authors and other creatives apparently are not entitled to get paid for their work like everyone else, or at least don't translate pirating to "the writer's not getting paid for this." Apparently they're supposed to work for free "for the love of it!" don't need to pay for food, healthcare and housing, and should smile whenever their stuff is pirated. So maybe it truly doesn't matter to you that the big issue here is authors not getting paid, I don't know. That's what it's about, though.

Something I find deeply alienating is that I very clearly do not have or wish to have the same kinds of relationships with media that are presumed in online "fandom." I'm very seldom interested in imagining myself interposed into the narrative, and I'm extremely resistant to the idea of treating the media I watch or read as a collection of unassembled pieces that I'm expected to finish myself.
To be clear, I'm not talking about narratives that expect the audience to read between the lines or that leave certain things deliberately ambiguous, which isn't the same thing. I mean that as a viewer or a reader, I don't usually feel like it is (or should be) my responsibility to construct a parallel or alternate narrative to fill in the pieces the existing narrative doesn't supply. It's not that I never have an emotional investment in particular characters, relationships, or story threads; if I didn't, I would drop out after a while and find something more interesting to read or watch. However, if the narrative leaves those elements underdeveloped or unsatisfactorily resolved, my reaction is to mutter, "Well, that was disappointing," rather than to sit down and hammer out a 15,000-word hurt-comfort fix-it AU to post on AO3. If someone were to actually hire me to do something along those lines, or if there were a situation where I thought I could pitch such a thing as a professional project, I might consider it, but approaching something professionally is very different, and necessarily more dispassionate, than being in my feels about a headcanon, as it were.
This is also why I don't like video games beyond maybe the very simple puzzle variety (e.g., Minesweeper), and then only if I'm very, very bored. Modern video game RPGs demand the same kind of fannish labor I find so disagreeable: You're expected to go through the motions to construct and play out the story and its various threads — without any of the kind of creative flexibility found in writing an original story, or even playing a tabletop RPG, where the direction of the story is an interactive, collaborative effort. This is particularly vexing with video games like (notoriously) FALLOUT 3, where the game narrative, especially at the end, really strong-arms you into making the specific choices the game writers and designers have laid out for you, to the point that the game actively thwarts any attempt to find alternative solutions. I find it the worst of both worlds: You have to do the work, but in service of a narrative in which you are still essentially a spectator. Writing an original story, or creating one with your friends as a TTRPG adventure, is also a lot of work, but the results are yours, even if the only compensation is a sense of creative satisfaction.

When transitioning to a new career or starting a new business, it's important to take time to heal and find your identity. Identify your strengths and weaknesses and focus on what you're good at. Don't be afraid to hire others to handle tasks that are not your strengths. Tax lien investing can be a lucrative investment strategy, but it requires knowledge of the process and understanding the rules in different states. Invest in your own education by seeking out mentors, absorbing educational content, and investing time in learning and growing your skills. Consider bartering or trading services with mentors or experts in your field if you can't afford to hire them. Having a book can provide credibility and open doors for speaking engagements and other opportunities. Prioritize self-education over excessive consumption of non-educational content like TV shows and movies. There are various ways to gain knowledge and mentorship without spending money, such as bartering and accessing free online resources. Charging for your unique perspective and approach is justified, even if information is available for free. Speaking engagements and podcasts can be effective ways to reach a broader audience and establish credibility. When speaking for organizations with limited budgets, consider alternative forms of compensation, such as books or access to a database. Educating people about alternative investment opportunities, such as real estate and tax lien investing, can help them achieve higher returns. SELF-PUBLISHING VS TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING: WHICH ONE IS MORE PROFITABLE?
Self-publishing in children's books is the process of independently producing, distributing, and marketing a children's book without the involvement of a traditional publishing company. It allows authors and illustrators to retain creative control and a larger share of the royalties from their work, but it also requires them to take on many responsibilities typically handled by a publishing house.
Tumblr media
1. Creating the Book: This involves writing the story, illustrating it (if you're also an illustrator), or working with an illustrator. The book should be professionally edited and designed to meet industry standards for quality.
2. Production: Self-published authors must handle the production of physical and digital copies of the book. This includes formatting the book for print or e-book publication, securing ISBNs (International Standard Book Numbers), and creating cover designs.
3. Distribution: Self-published authors can make their books available through online retailers, like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and independent bookstores. Print-on-demand services, like CreateSpace and Ingram Spark, can be used to produce physical copies as they are ordered, reducing upfront costs and the need for inventory.
4. Marketing and Promotion:  Authors are responsible for promoting their books, including building a website or social media presence, organizing book launch events, and seeking reviews and media coverage. Marketing is a critical aspect of self-publishing, as it helps you reach your target audience.
5. Pricing and Royalties: Self-published authors have control over pricing their books and typically receive a higher percentage of royalties compared to traditional publishing. However, they are also responsible for covering production and marketing expenses.
6. Copyright and Legal Matters: Authors must handle copyright registration, contracts (if working with illustrators or collaborators), and other legal matters on their own or with the help of legal professionals.
7. Quality Control: Self-published authors must ensure the quality of their children’s books, from editing to printing, to compete with traditionally published works.
8. Financial Investment: While self-publishing can be more cost-effective than it used to be, there are still expenses involved, including editing, cover design, marketing, and distribution costs. Authors should be prepared for these financial commitments.
Self-publishing in children's books can be a rewarding way for authors to see their work in print and reach their intended audience. However, it requires dedication, a commitment to quality, and a willingness to learn about the publishing and marketing process or seek professional assistance when needed.
Traditional publishing in children's books refers to the traditional and established method of getting a children's book published through a traditional publishing house.
Here are the key elements of traditional publishing in the context of children's books:
1. Acquisition: The process typically begins with an author or illustrator submitting a manuscript or children's books proposal to a literary agent or directly to a publishing house. The publisher's editorial team reviews the submission for its potential to be published.
2. Editorial Process: If a manuscript is accepted, it goes through various stages of editing, which can include developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading. The publisher may also provide feedback on the children's books content, structure, and suitability for the target audience.
3. Illustration: For children's picture books and some middle-grade and young adult novels, illustrations play a significant role. The publisher may hire an illustrator or work with the author/illustrator to ensure the visual elements align with the story.
4. Design and Layout: The children's books design and layout, including the cover and interior pages, are professionally created by the publisher's design team. The layout takes into consideration the age group and format of the children's book.
5. Production: The physical production of the children's books, including printing and binding, is managed by the publishing house. They handle the choice of paper, typefaces, and other production details.
6. Distribution: Traditional publishers have established distribution channels that allow the children's books to be made available to bookstores, libraries, and online retailers. They handle the logistics of getting the book into the hands of readers.
7. Marketing and Promotion: Traditional publishers typically have marketing and publicity teams that work to promote the book. This can include author book tours, advertising, social media campaigns, and other promotional activities.
8. Sales and Royalties: The publisher sells copies of the children's books, and the author receives royalties based on the sales. Royalty rates vary, but they are typically a percentage of the book's cover price.
9. Advance: Some authors receive an advance payment from the publisher against future royalties. This advance is typically paid upon signing the publishing contract and in installments.
Tumblr media
Traditional publishing can offer authors and illustrators many benefits, including professional support in all aspects of book production and distribution. However, it often involves a competitive submission process, and the author or illustrator may have less control over certain aspects of the children's books content and design compared to self-publishing.
It's important to note that the landscape of publishing, including children's book publishing, has been evolving, and there are now various hybrid and alternative publishing models available to authors and illustrators, allowing for more flexibility and control over the publishing process.
Self-publishing and traditional publishing are two distinct routes for bringing a children's book to the market, and they have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Here's a breakdown of the key differences between the two:
1.     Control:
a.  Self-Publishing: Authors have full control over the content, design, and distribution of their children's books. They make all the decisions, including the cover design, formatting, and pricing.
b. Traditional Publishing: Traditional publishers have the final say on many aspects of the children's books, including the cover design, illustrations, and sometimes even the content. Authors have limited control over the final product.
2. Cost:
a. Self-Publishing: Authors bear the financial responsibility for the entire publishing process, including editing, cover design, and marketing. While this allows for more control, it can be expensive.
b. Traditional Publishing: The publisher covers the majority of the production costs, such as editing, cover design, and printing. However, authors typically receive lower royalties to compensate for this financial support.
3. Time:
a. Self-Publishing: The process can be relatively quick, allowing the author to set their own timeline. The children's books can be published within a few months.
b. Traditional Publishing: The traditional publishing process is typically slower due to the need for manuscript acquisitions, editing, and the production schedule of the publisher. It can take a year or more to see the children's books in print.
4. Distribution:
a. Self-Publishing: Authors need to handle distribution themselves, which often involves selling through online retailers, local bookstores, or at events. E-books can be distributed through various online platforms.
b. Traditional Publishing: Traditional publishers have established distribution networks and relationships with bookstores, making it easier to get the children's books into physical stores. They also handle the distribution of e-books.
5.  Marketing:
a. Self-Publishing: Authors are responsible for their book's marketing and promotion, which can be time-consuming. They may need to build their own audience and hire marketing services.
b. Traditional Publishing: Publishers have marketing departments to promote books, which can include author tours, advertising, and other promotional activities. However, even traditionally published authors often need to be involved in marketing efforts.
6. Credibility and Prestige:
a. Self-Publishing: Self-published authors may face challenges in gaining recognition and credibility, as there is no external validation of their work. However, this has been changing as self-publishing becomes more accepted.
b. Traditional Publishing: Being traditionally published can lend credibility and prestige to an author's work, as it implies that the manuscript has been vetted by professionals.
7.     Royalties:
a. Self-Publishing: Authors typically receive a higher percentage of royalties for each book sold, but they also bear the costs of production and marketing.
b. Traditional Publishing: Royalties are usually lower, but the publisher covers production and distribution costs.
The choice between self-publishing and traditional publishing for a children's book depends on an author's goals, resources, and preferences. Some authors may prefer the creative control and potential for higher royalties in self-publishing, while others may value the support and credibility offered by traditional publishers. Hybrid models and collaborative publishing options also exist, providing additional choices for authors.

i really see no point in uploading art online anymore
even my own sister, my boss, who pays me to make art assets, is trying to get me to use ai to generate worker bios and "improve" my work time
why, just why
I have a BA in fine art. I have a college degree. She hired me because she needed an assistant that can upgrade her website occasionally. She talked to me at length about how she admired the way I write and the art I make. Why does even she want fucking ai garbage when it only takes me about 2 seconds longer to write something cogent? to draw something unique to her business?
knowing full well the second my work is uploaded to her website another fucking ai skimmer is going to take it to train a logo making model or ui asset model...i'm contributing to my own outmoding by getting a job in my field and there's literally no one in this field that is safe.
There's not an art director or creative department or even a marketing department that won't get replaced almost entirely by an ai service and an unpaid intern to edit the ai garbage. Tech bros and CEOs don't care about quality, they only care about good enough. "Will the market accept this instead? Then I can cut out the entire human contribution to my brand identity and cut costs"
then she asks me why i haven't gotten another job in my field. no one wants me. im too expensive by existing. they can use an ai subscription instead for fucking everything
Few of the artist affected by AI art thievery.

Boost Your Productivity Virtual Assistance Services for Any Business Domain
Tumblr media
In the fast-paced business world, productivity is key to staying competitive and meeting your goals. However, many business owners and teams find themselves bogged down by routine tasks that distract from core objectives. That’s where virtual assistance services come in. By outsourcing tasks to skilled professionals, companies can regain focus, boost productivity, and achieve more.
In this blog, we’ll explore how dedicated virtual assistance services in India can benefit your business, streamline operations, and meet your needs in any domain—from digital marketing to administrative support.
1. The Power of Virtual Assistance: What It Means for Businesses Today
Virtual assistance isn’t just about offloading work; it’s about accessing expertise in specific areas without the need for in-house hiring. Virtual assistants (VAs) are skilled professionals trained to handle various tasks remotely. Current summary of the job search - things I've applied to and/or considered:
ESL teaching - applied to a bunch of places in my city, have not heard anything back; ESL teaching by non-natives online is apparently very hard to do these days and pays like, 5$ an hour, so I won't even try with the websites
tutoring - oversaturated both online and in my city, plus it turns out I've forgotten a great deal of basic biology and would need several weeks if not months to get back into it; probably will not bother with it
data analysis - requires math degrees and/or SQL experience; I'm considering getting into SQL but it would take me A While to get good at it
AI training - so far have only found one website open to EU residents and I've applied to it; seems like the pay per hour is ok compared to my local minimum wage but the amount of work is probably very inconsistent, so I don't expect this to be enough even if I get accepted
writing - I'm still looking into technical/medical writing because it seems like something I could do, but the vast majority of jobs I've seen require experience; I don't really know copywriting/content writing and what is there is mostly freelance which is inconsistent as hell; I'm also still thinking/looking into ghostwriting but I don't know if I want to do creative writing as my day job (because I don't think I would have the energy left to work on my own novels after that)
translation - mostly dead because of AI; what is left is mostly audio translation, which is not an option for me because of auditory processing problems
other online gigs, like mechanical turk tasks, upwork, data entry, transcription, virtual assistant, etc - either doesn't pay enough or oversaturated or both; I've signed up for one website with surveys, so far have not gotten any messages from it
I'm still considering applying to the assistant editor position at the academic journals publisher but I doubt I would survive more than a month in a full-time job with an hour of daily commute. I'm now considering various minimum wage customer service offers because I'm running out of options but I don't think I would get hired for customer service either tbh (I am not good at passing as neurotypical, especially now after burnout).
Every day this just saps more and more of my energy and will to live. Why is it so hard to find anything after seven years in higher education...

Types of Solopreneurs: A Comprehensive Overview
The concept of “solopreneur” has become increasingly popular in the fast-moving business world. A solopreneur is an entrepreneur who starts up and operates a business independently for himself or herself with no plan to develop an extensive organization or hire employees. This model provides for the freedom of being self-employed and encourages creativity, independence, and tremendous earning power. While most solopreneurs come from different backgrounds and industries, they mostly fit into these several major categories. Knowing these categories will guide the aspiring solopreneur to pinpoint where he or she might be able to find a niche and then use them for their best possible advantage.
Freelancers
Probably the most popular type of solopreneur would be freelancers. Freelancers are contract-to-deliver services for clients, meaning that instead of being permanent employees, they offer their time and skills for hire based on specific agreements or contracts. While writing, graphic design, web development, photography, and marketing service lines usually see many freelancers, the latter sometimes receives freelancers in different lines of business. While some freelancers prefer connecting directly with their clients, others use sites like Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer as mediation offices.
Example: A graphic designer can be a freelancer, having value to multiple companies in a single period. He can be hired for designing logos, brand materials, and other graphics for web pages. This way, he can specialize in one area but still fulfill the distinct needs of every client. This freedom lets him pick projects suitable for his creative eye and schedule.
Consultants
This is where consultants use their experience to advise businesses on particular issues or challenges. Mostly, consultants have gathered experience in a particular industry; hence, they come up with insight that can improve the organization’s operations, strategy, or performance. Consultants can work in any sector, such as management, finance, human resources, or marketing.
Example: An executive who previously served at the corporate level can start a consulting practice as a leadership development expert. He shall offer workshops, individual coaching, as well as strategic planning to companies willing to upscale their teams. A large network of contacts could already be in place due to prior work experience, which can be tapped to secure early clients.
Coaches
It is on personal or professional growth, with the coach achieving specific goals agreed on with the client. Unlike consultants who give direct advice on matters to the individuals, this coaching approach results in self-discovery and growth, usually through guided conversation. Examples of this category include life coaches, business coaches, fitness coaches, and career coaches.
Example: A certified life coach would be positioned to guide clients on major personal challenges, assist in setting life goals, and improve in healthier habits. This is achieved through sessions and workshops and by providing related online resources. The users can then create actionable plans that are aligned with their values and aspirations. Their coaches are often seen using social media and online platforms to help reach a large audience.
Content Creators
They create original content on whatever channels-such as blogs, YouTube, podcasts, and social media-to attract followers interested in their personal brand based on some kind of expertise or interest, and monetize that content through sponsorships, affiliate marketing, or sales of their own products.
For instance, a food blogger may share recipes, cooking tips and restaurant reviews through his blog and social media platforms. After time, he or she can monetize content with sponsored posts, cookbook deals, and cooking classes for a community of intensely interested followers who love food.
E-commerce entrepreneurs
E-commerce solopreneurs are those that actually run online business ventures. They normally sell their products directly to consumers through the internet. These people can even manufacture their products or order them from suppliers. E-commerce remains a very accessible platform because of opportunities presented by Shopify, Etsy, and Amazon, among others, reaching all parts of the world.
Example: Artisan makes individual piece of handcrafted jewelry and sells it through Etsy shop. Through social media they can show his art to the customers, manage orders and ship out from home studio. This is a type of solopreneur often enjoys low overhead costs associated with selling online.
Influencers
Influencers, like other social media users, earn a huge following on social media by coming into partnerships with brands to promote their goods or services. Their influence is derived from their perceived authenticity and expertise on areas such as fashion, traveling, fitness, or technology. Many of the influencers are permitted to earn money via sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and merchandise.
Example: An Instagram influencer and YouTube personality may share his adventures and travel tips, earning him the loyalty of millions. He can then partner with travel brands or tourism boards to generate an income while inspiring others to explore the world. His success often banks on the interaction he must have with his audience and the credibility that will largely depend on his reputation.
Online Course Creators
One of the innovations of digital education is that many solopreneurs have taken the opportunity to create and sell online courses. Use your existing experience in something narrowly focused as a way to create learning material, which you can then sell through websites such as Teachable, Udemy, or on your own site.
Example: A marketer could build a course on social marketing methods. They would then coach others on how to sell their products online using video lessons, downloadable resources, and activities. Successful course creators typically dedicate a lot of time to marketing their courses through email newsletters and other social media.
Affiliate Marketers
Affliliate marketing- herein, one markets other people’s products or services and gets a commission each time a sale is generated off their unique referral link. It is super profitable with minimal up-front investment because it lets the solopreneur do business from wherever they want to in the world.
Example: A lifestyle blogger can include reviews as content and have other varied products with affiliate links to them. They can work based on the trust of their audience as well as provide quality recommendations so that they earn money through commissions when those purchases or sales occur due to the said links. This really calls for a combination of both content creation and marketing savvy.
Virtual Assistants
Virtual assistants administer help remotely to business people and entrepreneurs. The operations might include email management and appointment scheduling to manage social media and bookkeeping. This would, hence appeal to a solopreneur with the aim of streamlining such operations.
Example: An executive assistant who has left the office may transition into a new career as an assistant virtually. This will involve assisting small business owners with managing their daily affairs. Offering specialized services such as email management or coordination of projects would allow them to build their client base from their home.
