Is surgery always necessary for hip labral tears? No! And is there a non-surgical alternative? Yes! PRP is an effective non-surgical option.

Tips to Prepare for Labral Repair & Hip Impingement Surgery
Hey Guys!
I wanted to share my tips for preparing for labral repair and hip impingement correction surgery. If you've read some of my prior posts you may have seen that when the surgeon went into my hip he actually did not find a tear; my tissue was perfectly intact.
So even though I didn't get the labral repair, my prepping for surgery tips remain the same because that is the surgery I was preparing for. Also, as far as recovery, I'm still following the same protocol as someone who did get a labral repair because I still underwent a surgery and I still got the extra bone growth shaved down to address the hip impingement.
Okay so here are my Surgery Prep Tips:
Enjoy Life :) I decided to get my surgery before the start of summer because that worked best with my work schedule, but I was sad about having to miss out on many summer activities. I love the summer. So I did as many fun things as I wanted to do before the surgery so I wouldn't feel as sad about what I would be having to miss during recovery.
WORKOUT! Surgeons call this pre-hab. Strengthening the muscles surrounding your hips and legs as best you can will only help you during recovery. The muscle memory will still be there when you start physical therapy and start walking properly be there. During my first two weeks of PT, my PT asked if I was athletic because I was able to do the exercises better than she expected I guess lol
Eat Healthy. A few months prior to surgery I tried to kick my health stuff up a notch. I've already been trying to be more intentional about what I am eating over the past few years anyway, but 2-3 months prior to surgery I was trying to revv up my Vitamin C and Vitamin D. I drank green juices a few times a week, took a multivitamin each day, tried to eat a proper serving of vegetables each day, lowered my alcohol intake (probably a month before surgery), and tried to drink enough water each day to make sure my body was hydrated going into surgery.
Create a Peaceful Recovery Space. I knew I was going to be in my room majority of the day for a few months. So I decluttered my space and re-organized and/or added things that would be peaceful to look at (ex. my plants & candles)
Put Important Things within Reach. All of the things I would need, I tried my best to put within reach of my bed. I received a "grabber" in my hip kit from the hospital to help me grab things within reach since I wasn't able to bend or twist much.
Consider a Mini-fridge & Microwave in Room. I live in a 2-story apartment with the kitchen on a different floor than my bedroom so a mini-fridge in my room was essential. In there I had a brita water pitcher, fruits, and other things I wanted to snack on.
Consider a Removable Shower Head. I had got one, but didn't use it because I tried to install it the night before and I couldn't get the old shower head off. And then when I went to shower after surgery I was able to do so with help from my mom so I just let the removable shower head go, but install it if you can because it would be really helpful.
Ask Surgical Team about Hip Kit. So the social work team at the hospital handled ordering items to help me with recovery such as a shower chair and a raised toilet seat. They also told me that I would receive a Hip Kit from the hospital the day of surgery. This Hip Kit is VERY important because it includes items to help you reach for things and put on your clothes and shoes since you aren't supposed to bend much. BUT when I was done with surgery they were saying goobye and I was like "wait where is my hip kit?" They were looking at me like HIP KIT?!?! So apparently someone didn't communicate with the OT department who was responsible for putting the kit together and they had to put it together last minute because I wasn't leaving without one. If they don't provide one, you can order one online.
Stock up on Gatorade and Meal Prep. The gatorade has a lot of electrolytes to help w/ recovery (they even had me drink one the morning of surgery). I had my mom to cook for me, but even she got tired of cooking lol. It would have been nice if I cooked as much as I could and froze the meals to have them ready to go.
Get Ice Packs. I had a small ice pack, but needed to order a bigger one during my first week of surgery to cover my thigh and hip at the same time.
Have Things to Do. You may get REALLY BORED. I definitely did. So I made sure to have things ready to keep me busy. Books to read, shows/movies to watch, games to play, etc etc.
I hope this is helpful and if you have anything to include from your experience or have any questions feel free to comment 😊😊😊

Pros and Cons of Hip Labral Tear Surgery!
Hip labral tear surgery is a medical procedure designed to address damage to the labrum, a ring of cartilage that surrounds the hip joint, providing stability and cushioning. This injury is commonly associated with athletic activities, repetitive hip movements, or underlying conditions such as hip impingement. When conservative treatments like rest, physical therapy, or anti-inflammatory…

Good news!
Despite my recent tinnitus, it has been confirming today by an audiologist that my hearing A-OK! Apparently, my hearing is above average - like that of an 18-year-old (I'm 30).
👏🥳👏
I cannot put into words how relieved I am.
One of my greatest fears is losing one of my senses. This is especially due to the chronic pain in my hip, back and hands caused by my Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder and Hip Labral (Cartilage) Tear making me near unable to walk and struggle to use my hands - severely reducing my touch sense. As such, I was terrified that I might be losing some of my hearing. So, the fact that I'm not - my hearing is fine - is wonderful news!
Even if I do still have tinnitus in my left ear. Been referred for an MRI scan about that. Even so. Yay!

I am always up for eldritch bats, tell me more
Hey, thanks for asking! Technically the concept goes, Bruce modifies himself -> it alters him in unexpected ways and brings him more in tune with the city.
Here's a snippet from the start of it:
Mission report.
Bruce blinked past his concussion, laboriously typing up the events of the night, each finger aching as it moved on the keyboard. Bruce could feel scabs breaking off under the gloves, new blood binding the kevlar composite into his hands.
Recently he'd realized that the reports needed to be started early, because he was prone to forgetting otherwise.
His fractured hand moved clumsily over the keys, punching in letters describing the crime scene, his impressions, the evidence forensics had found. He frowned, struggling to recall exact numbers and deciding he could check footage later if needed.
This was just a way to get his initial thoughts down, account for the limitations in the lenses.
When the report was done, Bruce listed back against his chair, letting the chair support his back. A pressure headache tugged at his skull and Bruce knew he'd have to deal with the new spinal leak soon, but right now he didn't bother to move, the darkness of the Cave making the pain echo even more sharply through his bones and teeth.
If he wanted to, Bruce could get up right now. He'd mastered every aspect of his body. Made torn muscles work, walked on broken bones.
But the damage was particularly hard to ignore tonight.
He’d long since stopped updating his own medical files, but he ran through an accounting of the present damage. Concussion, his second this week. Hand fracture, foot fracture, worsening labral tear in his hip. His injured jaw could barely move. He had a herniated disk, severe bruising.

hi it's kinda life altering to be told straight up "your only option is surgery."
like i went to my therapist and she was like "well for my arthritis they've been giving me steroid injections and that helps so they'll probably do that to you too" and going. ok. cool. so i might go into this appointment and be told that i can just get some steroid injections and be fine. nice.
and then i go to the appointment and he's like "ok so here's what's on your MRI. your options are surgery to repair the labral tear, but your arthritis means that will probably not do much for you. you could get a total hip replacement, but you're a bit young for that. i recommend the hip preservation surgery, they try to preserve your natural hips but resurface them so they don't have the same issues anymore"
and hearing that i was like oh cool something not super invasive, still pretty bad, worse than injections, but not the worst. and then i look it up and it's like "this surgery is not recommended for patients with moderate or severe osteoarthritis" (my mri shows moderate but i have a lot of the symptoms of severe) 😑
so now i'm just like trying to come to terms extremely quickly with the fact that im probably going to need a prosthesis installed in me. maybe even two. and they're going to have to make me almost entirely incapable of taking care of myself for like 3 months. so like i want it all done at once but the more complex the procedure the scarier it is for me and im just.
i'm scared i'm so scared my entire life and all of my thoughts have been revolving around this and i just want to get it over with as fast as possible but i can't schedule it for like, tomorrow and get right into the recovery so i just have to sit in this fear and get more and more scared because ill be so much more reliant on everyone else than i already am and im scared. im so scared.
and worse i'm scared my insurance won't cover it and i'll just be unable to work because of my hips and im scared that i won't be able to get disability but also not be able to work so ill just be stuck in constant pain and have no ability to care for myself and there'll be nothing i can do about it until im "old enough" to get the surgery or whatever and idk
idk all of this is terrifying. this is all so horrifying and scary. i just want my body to work so i can take care of myself i don't want to be reliant on people to live but im going to have to become more reliant on people for a Long time before i can become self sufficient and that's honestly super scary. and also im scared im going to fuck my wound up because i have adhd and i constantly fuck things up because i forget how to do things and i forget to do things and im worried im gonna get fucking sepsis and AGGHHHH
i'm just going insane i can't stop thinking about it i can't get it out of my head im so scared. i'm so scared and im tired and i just want it done already.

Alright, so good news! They found why my damn hip has been hurting so badly for the last 7 months. Took a damn MRI to find it, but we found it.
Bad news: It's a tear in my hip labral and based on my research about this, this is at such a severe point that it's seeming pretty likely I will require surgery to fix it.
In other news, My Patreon.
