Hinode (aka Homestead) starts out with Ozai escaping prison (with help on the inside from Ukano and co) and booking it to the Earth Kingdom to try and hide out in one of the colonies; only he never makes it that far. He's attacked by some angry spirits, displaced by his razing of the Fire Nation during Sozin's Comet.
He tries to outrun them, but soon the damage is done - however, once he makes it to a forest he blacks out, only to awaken in a bed, even though he didn't see a home for miles during his travels.
He awakens in Hinode, a prosperous farming village teetering on becoming a small town. Hinode has had a boom in the last few years since the end of the war, and they are accruing more and more newcomers who arrive to become part of the new bustle of this cozy mountain land.
Ozai learns the town's most prominent lion-ram breeder was the one who found him, a woman named Niwa. She had gone to find one of her lamb cubs when she came across Ozai's battered body and sought help.
Ozai isn't keen on staying. He only intends to recover and then be on his way; but he quickly realizes he is surviving on good graces - it's best to not step on any toes while he is no longer a firebender and he cannot fully fight or defend himself.
Ozai eventually meets Niwa, and he's not impressed. She is a woman with olive eyes and bushels of thick, waving mousy hair. She is homely and naive; he thanks her and pretends to be in pain so he can have some alone time.
As he becomes stronger, the village leader asks Ozai (going by the name Chen) if he would be willing to help out around the village, and they will give him provisions for his travels. Begrudgingly, Ozai agrees, as he lost all of his supplies during the spirit attack.
Around this time he is asked to help Niwa shear some lion-ram manes for cloaks. He goes to help her, and the woman he supposed as empty-headed is eagerly wrestling her more stubborn rams, and he watches her pin one down, holding it and shearing it at the same time. She looks up to find Ozai and beams at the help. He's surprised she needs it as he sees the muscles he did not expect on her arms and back. Ozai does not much care for the chore, but Niwa continuously praises him after learning he has never done farmwork before. Ozai won't lie; he enjoys hearing praise again.
Ozai eventually has a small collection of money and supplies, and he is eager to be on the road. He wanders the forest, aiming to find his way out - only every single road leads him back to Hinode. Perhaps he needs a map. He asks for one, and he goes about the path perfectly... only he winds up back in the village.
He does not tell anyone of his predicament. He panics to himself as he continues to offer his services... but he can only amass so many supplies as they know he plans on leaving. He will look foolish and they may suspect something about him if he stays for too long, hoarding supplies. Especially as winter draws near. The village guru imparts upon him that he may find it better to stay for the winter. The trek beyond the forest can be treacherous in the snow and ice.
Ozai, upset with his lot, has no choice either way. He pretends to agree, and he stays in the village inn, so long as he continues to offer his services to the town. He helps with building new homes and barns, keeping watch through the night from predators or pillagers, and he finds himself helping Niwa, who is the last of her family ensuring care of her lion-rams.
Ozai hates it but he becomes soft on the beasts - and on Niwa, who smiles at him, and always ensures he leaves her home warm and fed. He notices how tired she is, as she hides it well. She is lonely, having lost her family over the past decade.
He begins to give her the brunt of his attention; waking up early to feed the lion-rams, that way when Niwa wakes up, she only has to ensure they are safe and warm from the winter. At first they don't have much to talk about. Ozai has remained rather quiet during his time there. Niwa asks him if he misses where he came from.
He closes his eyes and responds 'I did at first. Now I can see leaving was the best thing that ever happened to me.'
He thanks Niwa for rescuing him, and she blushes, telling him that the forest is always full of surprises. She has often believed herself lost, only to be led back in the nick of time; she swears she can see a figure who looks much like her grandfather, and she is certain his spirit has kept the land safe.
Ozai goes to speak to the village guru after this, and he finally admits he has not been able to leave Hinode. Even though he does not miss the Fire Nation, he isn't one for feeling trapped. The guru insists that, whatever Ozai's past is, perhaps he has something he is working towards.
He doesn't believe this; he is the Phoenix King!
... Right?
That name feels so far away now, but his pride is still burdened by dirtying himself on the daily, only to have exhaustion and soreness as his reward.
But the guru continues: 'for as much destruction caused by the Fire Nation, perhaps you are overdue to see to creation instead now.'
Her words freeze his blood; he stares... does she know who he is? She gives him a glance. One that he knows means she could tell anyone his truth, and he would have hundreds of villagers on his tail. And he still cannot escape the forest. He would be a dead man.
Ozai nods and bows to the guru, swiftly making his exit.
He tries to wander the forest again. To no avail.
He is still trapped.
Niwa notices him cursing at the edge of the forest as she tends to her flock. She goes to him, ensuring nothing is wrong, and she finds him crying out of frustration.
She brings him a cloak and something warm to drink, and she smiles at him. She sits with him, talking about how Hinode has been her only home, how it has become a haven for many different Nations of benders and smiths and creators.
Ozai murmurs he doesn't fit here. He's never been a creator.
He thinks about his children back in the Fire Nation. How he nearly destroyed them - and for once, something stirs in his belly. A gnawing, nasty feeling as the memory of scarring his son and abandoning his daughter suddenly have a different tone than he's ever known.
His emotions become worse, and Niwa stays with him as he sifts through his guilt and shame. He looks to Niwa, who he sees something different in now. She shows him patience and openness; she often speaks of how the past and the future become one with each choice they make.
Through his strained voice, Ozai admits that he wants to have a future. Confused, Niwa asks what he means. Ozai tells her he's been driven by anger, by bitterness, and by the want to destroy for so long; he'd almost carried out harming so many; and he's already hurt so many people.
He wants a future, but he doesn't know where to start.
Niwa takes his hand and insists he already has.
Ozai has rarely had anyone by his side that wasn't there due to his status. He was no longer the Fire Lord; he never became the Phoenix King - but why did he feel like he was being reborn? Reforged by the fire as his old life smoulders into ashes being carried away in the wind.
and he kisses Niwa. And she reciprocates.
If he isn't going anywhere, and if he wants a future... then let this be the one he has. Let this be his choice, how he proceeds to live.
The winter thaws, spring blooms, Ozai and Niwa become married in the summer, and Ozai lives a new kind of married life, unlike that he had with Ursa. Instead of politics demanding their every moment, he lives in peace, in this quiet, cozy home, enjoying meals and conversations and laughter; and in the gray of the following winter, it's revealed Niwa is expecting.
However, the ones who aided Ozai's escape from Prison are looking for him, wondering what happened to their Fire Lord, their Phoenix King. Surely he hasn't forgotten about them?
#Hinode#Homestead#Ozai#Niwa#this got long and it's more of an outline than a story really but it was nice to get out of my head

TW: SUICIDE MENTION TW: STALKING i remembered this one movie i watched earlier and i rewatched it and now im thinking it was kind of,, strange?? like i love the art and i think the writing would be great with another plot, but what is this plot of a girl stalking a boy as his pet cat,, like if my dog turned out to be a real human boy i couldn't love him romantically thats like my SON like miyo's obsessed. stalkerish. i mean, it was a fine movie but it felt really weird that the relationship was forced. it was basically like “oh if you don’t like her back then she’s gonna disappear and it’s all your fault if she does” like seriously. the stalker should not win in any situation she was a creep to the dude. it’s not cute to constantly pursue someone when they aren’t interested and have shown (as stated by the best friend) no interest in her. it is, dare i say, predatory. she essentially sneaks into his house and finds out personal stuff about him to get closer to him. they weren’t sharing bonding moments, she was just delusional and attaching herself to him because he was unknowingly kind to her. miyo is DEFINITELY not emotionally stable. When the movie first starts you see her walking down the street while mumbling about her feelings. she heavily implies she was suicidal. then there is a scene where she literally says "I used to wish the world would end but then I met Kento" she was very emotionally dependent on him. when she got rejected by him she literally sold her soul, showing that she thought there was no reason for her to be alive as a human if she didn't have kento in her life. even after she sold her soul, traveled to a different realm, and was going to be stuck as an animal for the rest of her life her biggest concern was you guessed it KENTO. at this point, I don't think that Miyo even really has feelings for kento, kento is just the only thing preventing her from suicide. miyo and kento's relationship is not healthiest in the slightest. love isn't a fix for mental health issues. i’d have loved if Miyo realized her stalker behavior was a misplaced outlet for her pain and fear of abandonment and kento rightfully put up the boundaries part way through the movie but resolves to help her upon leaning the truth because he does care for her but not romantically. the two end the movie as friends, kento becomes a successful potter and miyo begins to build a loving relationship with her family again, because lowkey the family situation was something i'd like to see because i feel like people would sympathize more with "my parents are arguing and i dont know how if feel about my stepmom" for miyo's plot than "i will turn into a cat and stalk my crush"

Hinode Observes Annular Solar Eclipse
On January 4, the Hinode satellite captured these breathtaking images of an annular solar eclipse. An annular eclipse occurs when the moon, slightly more distant from Earth than on average, moves directly between Earth and the sun, thus appearing slightly smaller to observers' eyes; the effect is a bright ring, or annulus of sunlight, around the silhouette of the moon. Hinode, a Japanese mission in partnership with NASA, NAOJ, STFC, ESA, and NSC, currently in Earth orbit, is studying the Sun to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that power the solar atmosphere and drive solar eruptions.

Seat 21 - Chapter One
A/N; Welcome to chapter one, y’all! I really hope you like it, ik this is all introductory stuff, but I’m soso passionate about this fic and my ocs in it. Enjoy!!
-
It surprised me when I got into the prestigious school of UA. Despite the family history, I made it. Though, I think mama was more surprised than I was.
The school map was crisp in my hands, pink highlighter circling my classroom several times over.
Room 1-A. Homeroom teacher; Aizawa Shouta.
Lively noise already came from the closed sliding doors. Bickering and friendly chatter alike.
Lifting up my glasses, I adjust my mask one last time before opening the doors.
Silence.
Eyes on me.
My throat closes, I blink harshly.
Then, back to the noise.
My throat opens back up.
With a quick scan, I spot a few semi-familiar faces.
The pink girl, from exams.
And the electric boy, also from exams.
And, to my extreme relief; Tokoyami Fumikage, who has left the seat next to him empty.
Chastly, I hurry my way up the fourth column of seats; sitting down in the one next to Tokoyami.
Now, I wouldn’t exactly label me and Tokoyami friends. Moreso, close allies.
“Mayumi! We’re glad to see you!” Dark Shadow’s perky, yet distorted voice comes from my left. Turning, I see both of them looking at me.
Thank you. I’m glad to see you both as well. Congratulations. I sign, fingers moving swiftly.
“And congratulations to you as well Hinode. Dark Shadow and I look forward to continue working together.” Tokoyami’s voice has gotten ever so slightly deeper over the break, though it may just be my imagination.
The bickering starts to become louder at the front of the class, drawing everyone’s attention.
The blond boy seems to be aggravating the situation, escalating it far more than it needs to. The one with navy hair isn’t much better, he has blinkers on and keeps pursuing his pointless version of justice. All over his feet on the table.
An unstoppable object meets an immovable force.
“This class is certainly more lively than the years past, is it not?” Tokoyami mumbles, a vague amusement in his tone.
I nod in agreement, unsure of how to feel.
The door slides open; the first person to enter since myself.
Once again, all eyes turn to him; myself no longer exempt. His green hair is unruly, with wide green eyes to match.
His freckled skin and scared expression mirror my own just minutes before.
The navy haired boy’s attention is sharply snatched away from the blond as he storms over to the new boy.
“Hello! I am from Somei Private Academy, my name is-”
“I know! I heard!” The smaller boy puts his hands up in an almost defending position, shying away.
“I’m Midoriya, it’s nice to meet you Iida.” A nervous smile dons his face.
A boy after my own anxious heart. A small smile and a bit of comfort come from finding someone likeminded so quickly.
One of the girls in the class bounds up, excitedly running towards the pair. Her speech is fast, and far softer than Iida’s boistrosity and Midoriya’s anxious yells, so I don’t catch exactly what she says.
But, Midoriya’s heart eyes tell me all I need to know about what he thinks. I barely stifle a laugh.
Tokoyami raises an eyebrow.
They’re cute, no? I sign, silent chuckles shaking my shoulders.
“I would have to agree. Though let’s hope they’re not oblivious.” The bird-headed boy sighs.
A gravelly, but loud voice comes from the hall.
“Go somewhere else if you want to play at being friends. This is the hero course.” A long yellow, Thing stands up before unzipping.
A raggedy looking man in all black emerges from what I now recognise as a sleeping bag. This must be our teacher.
“It took you all eight seconds before you were quiet, and time is limited.”
Sluggishly, the man strolls to the front and centre of the classroom.
“I am Aizawa Shouta, and I will be your homeroom teacher here at UA. Today we will be doing a quirk assessment test.”
The first part I expected; there was no way this man was not our teacher.
The second part, not so much.
My quirk is so limited in its safe use, surely Aizawa sensei knows this?
“Meet me outside on the oval asap. In your sports uniform.” Aizawa grumbles.
A panicked rush overtakes the room, everyone scrambling for their bags as well as the nearest changeroom.
Soon enough, we are all outside and changed.
Aizawa sensei explains that the tests will be the same physical tests as middle and elementary school; but with a twist.
We are allowed to use our quirks.
And the person ranking last will be expelled.
The blond boy goes first, showing that his explosivity is in more than his nature as he blasts the softball across the oval with miniature explosions.
Everyone is silent in awe as Aizawa sensei lists of the physical exams.
First, the 50 meter dash.
My quirk will be of no use here, and I’m painfully aware of that.
Again, the boy with the explosion quirk excells, as does the loud boy - Iida? - from this morning.
Myself, not so much.
The pink girl lines herself up next to me, sparing me a smile before the timer starts.
As soon as it does, she takes off - sliding on a strange transparent liquid that secreets itself from her skin.
Not long after, a blond boy shoots past, a bright laser coming from his stomach.
My regular run seems pathetic in comparison.
The side steps, long jump, distance run and ball throw were equally as pathetic.
I was nearly last, only beaten by Midoriya; who looked about as miserable as I felt.
And the only reason I stood a chance against him, was because of the sit up exercise.
Thankfully, my core strength hadn’t failed me; making me the most successful in that task.
Exhausted, I sit beside Tokoyami as our classmates line up for the last exam; the ball throw.
“How did you go?” The raven-headed boy asks non-chalantly.
Don’t expect to see me here tomorrow. I sign.
“That poorly?” He hums, leaning back on outstretched arms.
“You’re always such a cynic, Mayumi.” Dark Shadow whines, curling around Tokoyami’s shoulder.
I wave them both off, turning my attention back to our classmates.
Most have finished, leaving just one.
Midoriya.
From afar, he seems to shrink into himself as sensei speaks; the latter’s hair somehow floating.
A solemn nod, and my heart hurts for my peer.
Right before he launches the softball further into the distance than I could ever imagine.
I can’t control the gasp that leaves me, hands immediately going to cover my mouth - before reaching the familiar cotton.
“That is certainly impressive,” Tokoyami comments, surprise evident in his tone.
“See sensei,” Midoriya’s cry echos over the sports field.
“I can still fight!”
My heart warms for the boy.
Though, it seems not everyone’s does.
The explosive boy launches himself towards Midoriya, sparks flying from his clenched fists. Midoriya and I flinch back almost in sync, before the other boy is stopped.
What I just assumed was a scarf; entangels the blond boy - Aizawa sensei wielding the other end. His hair raises again; and the sparks die in the boy’s hands.
How?
Oh.
O h.
“Enough.” Aizawa snaps, tugging at the material.
The boy falls into the tan dust of the field.
“Don’t make me use my quirk more than necessary; it gives me dry eyes.” Even from several feet away, I see the scarlet glow.
Oh, this is certainly awkward.
Now I’m certain I’ll be the one expelled.

NASA’s NuSTAR Telescope Reveals Hidden Light Shows on the Sun by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center Via Flickr: Even on a sunny day, human eyes can’t see all the light our nearest star gives off. A new image displays some of this hidden light, including the high-energy X-rays emitted by the hottest material in the Sun’s atmosphere, as observed by NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). While the observatory typically studies objects outside our solar system – like massive black holes and collapsed stars – it has also provided astronomers with insights about our Sun. In this composite image, NuSTAR data is represented as blue and is overlaid with observations by the X-ray Telescope (XRT) on the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Hinode mission, represented as green, and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), represented as red. NuSTAR’s relatively small field of view means it can’t see the entire Sun from its position in Earth orbit, so the observatory’s view of the Sun is actually a mosaic of 25 images, taken in June 2022. The high-energy X-rays observed by NuSTAR appear at only a few locations in the Sun’s atmosphere. By contrast, Hinode’s XRT detects low-energy X-rays, and SDO’s AIA detects ultraviolet light – wavelengths that are emitted across the entire face of the Sun.
