Silver

A little story on how Hosea Matthews acquired Silver Dollar.

My little story was featured in the Curious Couple zine charity project, run by the wonderful @caughtinred. It was an honour to be a part of it!

The Silver Plug

"He's forty percent Thoroughbred, thirty percent Arabian and the rest Tennessee Walker!" The auctioneer enthusiastically boasted.

The grey stallion was a tall, beautiful creature indeed; tall, fine-boned, head held high as he 'danced' about restlessly at the end of the lead rope held by a nervous young groom. His black tail twitched into a storm as he restlessly pawed into the dry dirt of Valentine's Jackson Worth Auction Yard. Dark eyes fearfully rolled back at the crowd gathered at the fence, unaccustomed to gathering crowds. Two men had a look and lost interest; high-strung animals aren't of much value to the working man looking for a cutting horse or a reliable mount for travel.

But they are of value to a man looking to give his beau a memorable birthday gift.

I saw something special in that horse that nobody in the crowd else was seeing; an intelligent animal that society had no use for, rejected outright on first impression.

I had to get him for Hosea, who never rejects a soul based on first impression; I would know.

There was nothing wrong with Hosea's then-current mount, a fine bay Missouri Trotter mare named Biscuit who had taken him everywhere and had done right with him. She was getting a bit on in years and Hosea had wanted something more up to speed. To those who think we sent her off to the glue factory, fear not. We kept Biscuit around for little Jackie; she looked after him. This grey stallion, with its shimmering dapples and darker points, looks to fit the bill for speed.

The auctioneer rattled off a flurry of prices, with little interest. The gentleman to my right had taken some interest in a pair of Belgian Drafts and held off on the stallion. Another argued with his wife that she needs something far less high-strung. A younger man took some interest but lost it after seeing the groom lose control. Another man wearing what could be his Sunday's best but chose to wear it on Wednesday, as if his sense of fashion alone would give him the winning bid, became my sworn enemy.

He put in a bid of thirty dollars.

I couldn't allow that.

"Forty silver dollars and not a quarter more!" I couldn't have been more cocky and sure of myself; I was going to get this horse and even the most powerful forces in the world could stop me.

"Sold!"

Judging from the reactions, the crowd thought, 'better him than me.'

There was a successful train heist the other day in which yours truly—Dutch van der Linde—might have been involved. I might as well put the money to good use.

Gifts from me are almost always bought; there's something special about using that money from those high-risk, high-reward ventures involving the establishment and converting it into something exquisite. There's also an opportunity to brag about how much I spent on a gift. You might think it's 'tacky', but I call it proving my worth. It irks Hosea, which is why I do it.

I smirked and gave my competitor a chummy clap on the shoulder as I came on over to the auction yard.

And then, the stallion noticed me.

He held his head up high but now with confidence in place of the anxiousness that had put off several would-be bidders. His small, pointed ears swivelled towards me, nostrils still flaring as he tried to collect himself. Eye contact was made.

Something changed.

He still snorted and pawed at the ground some, but at that moment, I hadn't seen him stand so still. I took the rope from the very relieved groom and approached slowly and carefully. Most of the crowd had dispersed while a few stayed close by to see if this madman would get stomped into the dirt by the equally mad horse. I paid them no heed; it was just me, and this stallion.

"Hosea's going to love you . . . " I murmur, giving him a moment to check me out before I put my first hand on him.

"And you'll do right with him."

I was in awe.

A moment ago this horse was about ready to take the groom out for a ride, and now this horse revered me like I was a god among horses.

And then, he reached his elegant head out and nudged his soft, velvety nose into my hand that I held out.

The stallion wanted to meet Hosea.

'Oh, he will love you.'

Let's skip ahead a few days.

Despite some hesitation from Amos Levi of Amos Levi Blacksmith & Farrier, who thought the grey stallion would tear down the stable, he settled without issue for the few days leading up to Hosea's birthday.

The gang had spoiled Hosea well -- he had got half a library of books, a new Stetson hat, and a new rifle. But now it was time for the grand finale.

The calming presence of Arthur's mount -- the calm and sensible Boadicea -- helped with the trek back to camp from the stable. The Count, my fleet-footed constant companion, bless his soul, wouldn't be up to the task. His high-strung nature (only I can handle him) would only rub off on the new stallion. He took to the journey well but spooked at elk and moose, the howling of wolves and the hooting of owls. To say the least, he was not accustomed to the ways of the wilderness; he was raised on some highly affluent stable in New York where elk and moose were a little scarce. But Hosea is a patient horseman, and I had faith he'll get him sorted in due time.

Hosea also helped adjust Yours Truly to the wiles of the wilderness. I had left home at the age of fifteen, so cocky and sure of myself. I was in for a rude awakening when the real world scoffed at me and took me for a ride. Thankfully, at the end of the trail, some years later, was Hosea; we looked into each other's eyes and we saw something; I saw a handsome blonde man who I knew nothing of but still felt this magnetic pull towards. Hosea saw in me a rebellious young man who had a lot of promise; I like to think I lived up to some of that promise (I did).

Eyes, they say, are the gateway to the soul -- for man and beast alike.

On the journey home, I thought of how Hosea might react to this beauty of a horse; will he bond with him? The chemistry between horse and rider is important; few animals are as intuitive as the horse. Will he want him?

The camp was situated within a clearing of the woods of Ambarino, somewhere between West and East Grizzlies called Cattail Pond. From at the end of an old well-worn footpath, I had seen Hosea with his back up against a tree, admiring the cover of a new book he had got. I smiled. Even on a trip that wasn't more than a few days, I missed Hosea dearly.

I missed the warmth of his body when we hugged, his smile, his laugh, his exasperated sighs ---

I AM NOT NEEDY.

LIES.

I dismounted from Boadicea with absolute elegance and grace (I'm a little too used to riding smaller horses) and untethered the new horse's lead rope from her saddle. I might have already been beaming with pride. I called to him as I led the horses down the path.

"Have enough gifts, Old Girl, or will you take another?"

Hosea dropped the book when he saw what I had brought 'home.' He had been hinting that he had wanted a new horse, but he hadn't been expecting one so soon.

"Well, I'll be damned."

When I saw his smile and heard his astonished laugh, I knew he liked him.

Chest puffed out proudly, I handed Hosea the lead rope. "Beauty, isn't he? Pedigree Turkoman, among the first in America. His get could fetch a price."

Turkomans are an extinct breed but their lineage can be found in Thoroughbreds. So . . . I wasn't entirely lying.

Hosea carefully felt over the horse's shoulder, neck, and legs until he started to get restless. He has an eye for fine horse conformation; he was going over him with a rhetorical fine-tooth comb. No splints, no curbs, no crooked knees, he seemed impressed.

Then, a wildcard turned up.

"Do you have his papers, Dutch?"

Crap, I was caught. But wait, no! I can get out of this.

I quickly recovered, though. I thought back to a brief moment when the stallion nearly got away from me. "He got spooked when we were forging a stream, and I didn't realize I left Boadicea's saddle bag open after I stopped for a snack, and out they went."

There was a spark in Hosea's eyes, a hint of a smirk in the corner of his lips. He might have been onto me. If you think you try to get something past Hosea, you can try, but you've got to be good. And I thought I was bein' real good.

Only, apparently, not good enough for the King of the Conmen.

Oh, Hosea was onto me. He knows me too well and I know when he's onto me; that glint in his eyes is a dead giveaway he's won. Yet still, he played along. And I play along, with the idea that I haven't caught onto him knowing I knew.

Hosea leaned in, kissed me on the nose, and hugged me with his free hand. I know that he missed me; he doesn't show it (just like Yours Truly), but I know that he does. It's too quiet when I'm not around!

"Well, we'll have to head out right out at the crack of dawn to go looking for it."

My plan to out-foil the unfoilable was forever banished to the land where all good plans go to die.

The plan to give Hosea a reliable and speedy mount, though, succeeded beyond our expectations. We even got some good foals out of him that paid top dollar -- as they say, a fool and his money do part.

Silver Dollar -- Hosea named him for the forty silver dollars I've spent on him -- had twenty-seven summers with us. Twenty-seven summers of putting up with us on memorable misadventures. Twenty-five years of an unbreakable bond with the most incredible man the world has ever shared its greatness with.

We took Silver Dollar for brief trips out at first, with one of the tried and true camp horses who have been there and done that. We gradually worked our way up to overnight camping excursions, all of which accustomed him to what nature has to offer -- thanks to Hosea's ways.

Well, mostly.

Silver Dollar still took a dislike to elk, bull elk in particular. Maybe he found their call to be too out-worldly. Or maybe, just maybe, he couldn't handle the sight of an animal as majestic as himself.

Speaking of majestic animals (that aren't me) . . .

Silver Dollar got along well -- very well -- with The Count. My fears of his nervous energy rubbing off on that grey beauty were unfounded (I'm wrong once in a while -- keep it down). The Count likes very few, horse or man, but took to Silver Dollar after the initial 'I'm the main man here' welcoming, that establishment of dominance, which he respected, as he should. We even had to keep them hitched close together in the camp; there are few sounds in the world as unsettling as the sound of an Arabian screaming because of his friend being on the opposite end of the camp. We all make mistakes.

'Silver' got along fine with other horses, but he was attached to no other like The Count.

Just as I never got attached to anyone as intensely as Hosea.

Speaking of Hosea, he took to that grand creature on day one. Overlooked for his nervous energy, Hosea knew just how to channel that energy; in between missions, we would often race him against The Count, whom I took pride in having the fastest camp horse.

Until Silver Dollar came into our lives.

Like all fine stories, sadly, there has to be an ending.

When the herb concoctions of Hosea's no longer helped Silver Dollar and The Count's old and weary bodies -- that once carried them through misadventure upon misadventure -- we made the difficult decision to say the final goodbye.

Their decline was a slowly unfolding tragedy. It started with the usual complaints of creaky joints that we all suffer from; The Count, a few years older, was the first to retire after his knees got creaky. Silver Dollar was sounder but soon followed him in retirement; he couldn't bear to be without The Count. Over time, their valiant hearts slowly faded from the march of time. Breathing became laboured, complicated by aging joints; it became a struggle for them to rise after they had a roll among the lupins.

Father Time gives and takes the best from us.

We didn't want them to suffer anymore.

The term 'euthanasia' is Greek in origin, meaning 'easy death.' Euthanasia is something of a; it's freeing our companions from suffering, but for us, a part of us goes with them.

We laid The Count and Silver Dollar down together -- and buried them together -- on a warm summer's day. It was one of their 'good days'; their appetites had faded but they got one more grazing time in together and nibbled on each other's manes, as if knowing as if saying goodbye. On that day, we slowly led them down to the bend in Little Creek, among the lupins, the mountains and the pronghorn who had come out with their fawns.

No elk were present that day. It was as if they were keeping a respectful distance from the grand old steed -- who had turned almost as white as The Count in his winter ears -- who would size up to them if we gave him the opportunity.

Tears were shed.

Many tears.

We had trouble sleeping on the night of the day they were laid to rest. In all the years in which we shared our lives with them, it was the first night where we didn't hear their particular snorts, their familiar pawing in the grass and nickering. Save for the sound of the branches of the trees creaking, and the comforting song of the crickets, it was quiet, too quiet.

I took Hosea down to their burial site, and cried ourselves to sleep that night, right next to The Count and Silver Charm. Between you and me, I am normally the little spoon, but, that night was an exception. I held Hosea tight, wiping away each tear of his before we both succumbed to sleep, brought on by the exhaustion of the day's heartache. He remained in my arms when morning arrived.

We spotted a pair of wild horses horses; white and grey, appearing a distance away. They seemed curious but wary as if appearing to come and pay tribute.

I had to hug Hosea again.

It was a sighting that brought comfort and heartache.

I kissed him on the back of his head, my own voice wavering. "Maybe we could -- "

Hosea shook his head. "No."

I obeyed.

We hope that, when our time comes, we too have as peaceful of an ending as they did. Hosea plans on outliving me -- and I hope that he does. We'll buried together, next to the beloved stallions.

We have had horses since the passing of Silver Dollar and The Count -- there was Dynaformer, Milkweed, Evelyn Miller, Blue Girl -- but I'll never forget those dark, intelligent eyes of that high-headed silver stallion looking into the soul like the way Hosea looked into my now failing eyes, all those years ago.

They say there is no love like a cowboy's love of each other -- and their horse.

Horses -- they see us through thick and thin, without complaint. Without judgement.

To them, I say, thank you.

Chapter 16: Evil and Terrible

Here we are again-this time with the final chapter of the first season!

Yes, it took a while. I spent the past week focusing on the PP chapters since a new update for the game dropped. But don't worry, I'm back now!

I can finally say it-I'm DONE with the first season! I even rewatched the second season to figure out exactly where the reader will fit in. Your intelligence and magical knowledge could be useful for Ekko, Jayce, or Viktor... but let's be real, that would be boring.

Instead, I'm throwing you right into Jinx's world, breaking you down mentally even further-until you finally reach the point where you make a choice to save people. What exactly that choice is, I won't say yet. But I promise, when it happens, it's going to be a hype moment where the full extent of the magic genius's power is finally revealed.

You have often asked yourself in life whether you are doing the right thing.

On your travels, you asked yourself this all the time.

If you got into a fight and had to decide - run away or fight?

When you met people in foreign countries, people you grew fond of. Was it wise to become attached to them, or was it a weakness?

And whether you are even worthy of receiving the Corpse Parts.

Yes, you have the right arm - but that was pure luck. Or rather: a cruel sacrifice. A price that was still far too high for the prey.

"Only things of happiness and beauty gather towards the Corpse. "

A sentence that has burned itself into your head.

And yet...

You are here.

You are a participant, a hunter in search of something that may never accept you.

Because you are neither happy nor beautiful.

Instead, you are finally what you always wanted to be: a wizard.

You have always underestimated yourself, questioned your own potential - but deep down you know it. When it comes to magic, you are the strongest, at least here, at least now.

There is no absolute strength in magic, you understood that early on. But the sheer amount of your aura, your life energy, is unparalleled.

In distant lands, you often kept your presence hidden. But every time you didn't, the same thing happened: people noticed you.

Some called your aura threatening, others simply scary.

Even before you ever learned to cast spells, before you learned to disperse your aura or use it precisely - your raw magical power was already immense.

Teachers, mentors, enemies - they all said the same thing:

"You don't need big spells to keep up with strong fighters."

But you have learned that strong fighters are not the same as experienced fighters. And the difference between the two is huge.

Almost every person you met could have been the end of you in the beginning.

Warriors who have survived hundreds of battles.

Magicians who had already mastered the art of magic at birth.

But you were superior in one area:

Intellect. Strategy. Adaptation.

It was no wonder that Singed kept emphasizing that you have incredible potential.

That one day, when you grew up, you would be dangerous.

And every day you wished he was wrong.

That his words lose their meaning, their weight, their truth.

But...

They never did.

You felt it with every second.

With every breath.

With every battle.

You became stronger.

Whether it was the sheer volume of your aura, your knowledge of magic, or your strategic foresight, you learned at a speed that overwhelmed even the most talented mages.

You were a fast learner.

Faster than anyone before.

And that was exactly the problem. With every new fragment of knowledge about the Corpse Parts, about this world or about magic, the inner conflict you carried within you became worse and worse.

And now you're in the middle of it - a conflict that is no longer just raging in your head, but is unfolding in reality.

"The only thing that kept me going was the thought of getting back to you."

Vi's voice is calm, but something resonates behind it - hope. Longing. A slight trembling that she tries to hide. She sits bound in a chair, her hands tied to the armrests, her gaze fixed on Jinx.

You're in another of Jinx's hideouts - somewhere in the remains of the old Cannery. Hidden among the rusty girders and crumbling walls, far away from the world above. This is where she brought you after you took Vi from the bar and she dragged Caitlyn and Silco here.

You sit quietly in a dark corner, your presence hidden as you observe everything.

"Are we still sisters?" asks Jinx, and for a moment there is something fragile in her voice.

"Nothing is ever going to change that." Vi's answer comes without hesitation.

An oppressive silence spreads. Only the soft flickering of the candles on the table casts shadows on the walls.

You slowly move out of the darkness and step closer to the circle of light. Silco is also sitting tied up, his mouth blocked with a cloth. A little further next to you is Caitlyn - bound, with a similar gag, but her eyes blazing with rage.

"I always knew you'd come back." Jinx grins wryly as she rocks back and forth in her chair.

"What's going on?" Vi's voice is cautious but tense. She lets her gaze wander over the table, over the candles, over the things lying on it. Then she scans the darkness around her as if she's looking for something. No - for someone.

After you.

"He took everything from us," Jinx hisses as her smile fades. "Right here. He stabbed Vander in the back. Just like he planned to with me." She shakes her head. "All the time saying you both abandoned me when he knew the truth. Liar."

She pauses, tilts her head and contorts her face into a thoughtful grimace.

"Hm... We're missing some people. "

With that, she steps into the darkness.

The moment her eyes meet yours, you recognize a hint of surprise in her gaze - as if she had forgotten you were there, or as if for a moment she had the feeling that you weren't really real.

But without another word, you hand her the plate with the silver lid. Just as it was planned.

Jinx steps back into the light, plate in hand. Without hesitation, she drops it on the table right in front of Vi with a loud clatter.

"I paid your girlfriend a visit this morning. "

Vi freezes.

Vi's gaze jumps from Jinx to the plate. Her muscles tense, her breathing becomes shallower. Her fingers claw into the armrests of the chair as if she could free herself with sheer strength.

Jinx watches them with amusement.

"What did you do?" Vi's voice is full of fear, almost pleading. "No!" She quickly averts her eyes as Jinx lifts the lid.

"Sheesh! I'm not that crazy." Jinx laughs, tossing the lid over her shoulder as if it's all just harmless fun.

Then she puts two fingers in her mouth and whistles.

Nothing happens at first. A second passes, then two. Then - slow steps.

Heavy. Mechanical. Unstoppable.

And they are yours.

You step out of the darkness, the shadows dissolve from you as if you had never really been part of them. But your heart is racing.

Why am I doing this?

Have I really gone that crazy?

Where has my damn mind gone?

With both hands, you push a chair forward and Caitlyn sits on it, tied up with her mouth shut. The chair squeaks across the floor until it's right next to the table - as if she's sitting on it voluntarily.

"Powder! Y/N! Leave her out of this!" Vi's voice is rough, almost desperate.

Damn, what am I doing here?

You look at the floor and try to organize the thoughts in your head. Feelings that you didn't have before slowly take over. All this time you've only been thinking about Jinx. About her, about not letting her down.

Not again.

Jinx approaches you, resting her chin on your shoulder as she looks towards the table.

"Now...where do we sit?"

Her gaze wanders over the chairs.

One says "Powder" and another "Jinx". Two others bear the names "Y/N" and "Sorcerer".

Jinx slowly walks over to Vi, takes her gun and presses it into her bound hands.

"Make her go away."

Vi looks at her in horror.

"Send her on her way and-"

Caitlyn grunts in her restraints, trying to say something, but the gag stifles her words.

Jinx leans closer to Vi, her voice sweet, almost gentle:

"And you can have Powder and Y/N back."

The room is silent. The flickering candles cast distorted shadows on the walls.

Vi looks first at Jinx, then at Caitlyn - and then at you.

And for a moment, you see something in her eyes that you didn't expect.

Not anger. Not fear.

Care. For you.

And that's what finally makes you falter.

Shit! What am I doing here?

Your breath hitches, your heart races. Your mind screams, but your body remains motionless. Why don't you intervene? Why are you just standing there?

"I can't." Vi's voice is brittle, full of emotion.

Jinx grimaces as if that's the wrong answer. She takes the gun back and points it at Caitlyn.

"No! Powder, listen!" Vi's voice cracks. "We... we can just go. Just the three of us. We'll leave and never come back."

The words hit you like a hammer blow.

The three of you. Vi, Powder... and you.

The children from back then.

Why does it feel like that's a possibility?

For a moment, you forget where you are. Forget that Jinx is holding a gun, that Caitlyn is tied up, that Silco is watching you from the darkness.

It's only a tiny moment, but it's enough to pull you into the abyss of your own thoughts.

"Where would we go?" Jinx's voice is quiet, almost brittle. Then she blinks and shakes her head. "No, no, no. She's not saying that."

Her gaze wanders into the void, and you know exactly what that means. She sees something that isn't there.

"It's true," Vi presses on, her voice desperate. "We'll put this behind us. You'll never have to see him again, Powder, Y/N."

Silco makes a low, contemptuous noise. It's clear why - to him, Jinx is his daughter. His family.

You move almost automatically, step closer to him, observe him.

His aura is an open book for you: Distress. Despair. And underneath, hidden deep down - fear. Fear of losing Jinx.

You bend down, reach for the fabric covering his mouth and slowly pull it away.

"Her name is Jinx!" His voice thunders through the room, full of unbridled rage. "She's lying! You'll both be with her a day before she realizes that neither of you is that girl or boy anymore-and then she'll turn her back on you!"

Jinx flinches as if his words have physically hit her. Then she turns abruptly and comes to you.

"What should we do?" Her voice sounds almost childlike.

And you?

You can't answer.

You can't breathe.

The moment feels so unreal that you feel sick. Every sentence, every word, every movement - anything could seal the fate of you all.

Vi offers you a second chance.

But Jinx means everything to you.

And Silco means everything to Jinx.

What should you do?

The memories crash over you like a wave. The explosion at the Cannery. The rubble. Vander, buried under steel. Your own screams as you watched from the shadows as everything fell apart.

You are that child again. The child who couldn't move.

You want to scream, but your voice fails.

Jinx stares at you, waiting for an answer.

"I..."

Your throat feels as if it is constricted.

"I don't know."

Silence.

A single word could have changed everything.

But you didn't find one.

"Drop the gun!"

The voice cuts through the tension in the room like a knife. You and Jinx turn around jerkily - mentally still in another world as reality catches up with you.

Caitlyn stands there. Her hands are shaking slightly, but her grip on the gun is firm. The muzzle is pointed at you.

You squint your eyes, analyzing in a split second how she has broken free from the restraints - but it no longer matters. She is free, she has a weapon and she is ready to use it.

I have to act.

Your grip on the steel ball in your pocket tightens. Your mind switches to fight mode.

If she pulls the trigger, I'll hit the bullet first - then her.

You instinctively direct your aura to your vital areas, strengthen your skin, your bones. If it fires, it won't kill you.

But before you can act, Caitlyn pulls the trigger.

Bang!

The shot hits right in front of your feet. The smoke slowly dissipates as you back away slightly - not out of fear, but out of pure instinct.

You immediately pull Jinx backwards, protecting her with your body.

"No! Stop!" Vi's voice is loud, pleading.

Caitlyn continues to aim at you, her posture tense.

"Drop. The. Gun." Her tone is unyielding.

"Wait! They're my siblings!" Vi almost screams it, her voice full of panic.

"Vi, they're both too far gone..." Caitlyn replies with a hint of resignation. And then -

Her gaze wanders to you.

For the first time since you met her, she doesn't see you as an enemy. Not as a threat.

But with compassion.

And then she says it.

"You're a disgrace to your family in Piltover."

Everything stops.

Your train of thought.

Your breath.

Your heartbeat.

Your magic.

Jinx makes a small movement, pretending to give in - but you hear Vi's voice before you can act.

"No, no, no-!"

Too late.

Your aura explodes through your legs. In the blink of an eye, you're in front of Caitlyn.

She can't even react.

Your right hand is flooded with magic - a fraction of your true power, just ten percent. And yet it is enough.

Your punch hits Caitlyn in the side.

She flies.

Like a toy caught up in a storm, she is hurled across the room. Several meters until she hits the ground hard, her body rolls across the dusty floor and remains motionless.

Jinx giggles quietly behind you.

Vi screams.

And you?

You don't move. Your gaze remains on Caitlyn's motionless figure.

How much power did I really use?

In terms of magical defense, she should barely have more than four percent of my own. If I had put just a little more aura into my blow, I would have broken at least three of her ribs - maybe even worse.

Your eyes wander over Caitlyn's body. Her chest rises and falls weakly, a faint hint of life still in her. Jinx steps up next to you, slaps you playfully on the shoulder and picks up the gun from the ground.

But you don't react.

Caitlyn's words... They echo in your head like an avalanche that slowly starts rolling.

"You're a disgrace to your family in Piltover."

The memories hit you like a knife in the chest.

She sways, her gaze unsteady, her fingers twitch slightly, as if she is lost in another reality.

Not now. Not again.

"Picture Mylo! Claggor!" Vi's words snap Jinx out of her trance.

A mistake.

A huge mistake.

Her whole body stiffens, as if someone has flipped a switch. Her eyes widen, her breathing quickens - irregularly. Her fingers clutch the handle of her weapon so tightly that her knuckles turn white.

She begins to tremble.

Oh no.

Not now.

A tantrum. Oh, shit.

Jinx jerks from one direction to the next, her hands shaking, her eyes flickering, and the finger on her gun tightens around the trigger.

Then -

BANG. BANG. BANG.

She shoots wildly. Bullets tear through the room, hitting walls, shattering glass, sending sparks flying, and you act immediately.

Aura, now.

Without hesitation, you spread your magic over your entire body, an intuitive reaction that you have perfected over the years. 30 percent.

Jinx rushes to him, falling to her knees, her hands trembling as she reaches for him.

Tears are already streaming down her face.

She takes his hand.

"I'm sorry..."

Silco's eyes are half open. His breathing is shallow.

"I never would have given you to them. Not for anything."

Then you will understand.

A deal. He wanted to make a deal. Zaun's independence, a betrayal of Piltover - and all for Jinx. He was betting on her. Everything on her.

Something inside you tightens. You don't want to understand it, but it happens anyway.

Tears burn in your eyes.

Silco will die.

And there's nothing you can do about it.

Jinx sobs.

"You saved me before... you can do it again, right?"

Her gaze jumps to you.

Panic. Hope. Pleading.

"You healed me, Y/N! You made me better! You can fix him too!"

"Please..."

She grabs your hand, her fingers clasp your wrist, trembling, squeezing, pleading.

Your breath catches.

Your gaze wanders to Silco.

He looks at you.

His breath is weak. His lips are moving.

"Protect her... from this cruel world..."

Then -

Silence.

Jinx's grip on your wrist tightens.

"Do something!" She screams, her eyes full of despair.

But you can't.

It is too late.

You slowly stand up. Your body feels heavy.

Your lips form the words that you don't want to say yourself.

"He's..."

Jinx's breathing stops.

You close your eyes.

Then open it again.

"He's... already dead."

Jinx's head jerks around.

Her gaze meets Silco's empty, motionless body.

She only understands it now.

Silco is dead.

Jinx staggers back, her gaze lingering on his lifeless body. Her hands tremble, but then... then it comes back.

The self-confident smile.

The mask.

But you can see it. It is broken.

Slowly she sits down, her legs wide apart, her weapon held loosely in one hand. Her aura flickers, a storm that even you can no longer fully appreciate.

"Powder? Y/N?" Vi's voice is soft, almost pleading. "It's okay. We'll be okay."

Nothing is okay. Damn it all!

Something inside you explodes. The anger you've been holding back boils up. Your gaze falls on Silco. His lifeless body... the blood... the feeling.

It's like back then.

Like Vander.

You see yourself there again, in the ruins of the Cannery. Kneeling. Crying. Haltless.

And now? Now you're here again. Silco - Vander's brother - lies dead in front of you, and all you feel is an abyss.

You have lost him.

Jinx moves.

Slowly, but purposefully. She reaches for the cupcake on the table - no, for the crystal inside. The hex crystal shimmers in the candlelight, pulsating like a heartbeat.

Then she turns to you and holds it up.

"I thought maybe you could love me like you used to. Even though we're... different." Her voice is calm, almost fragile. "But you changed too. So... here's the new us."

She hands it to you.

And you understand.

Shit. You have to stop them. This is madness. Silco didn't die for nothing. You can't let this happen.

Stop them!

Your rational mind is screaming at you. All the possibilities play out in your head - strategies, probabilities, alternatives. But none of them lead you to her. None leads you to where she is.

You see the dead Silco.

And at that moment, you break. It reminds you of Vander back then, and the view is the end.

Slowly, without hesitation, you take the crystal.

And her hand.

You go.

Slow steps.

Past the table. Past Caitlyn's motionless body.

Past Vi.

She says nothing more.

("Hey there, little honey, won't you groove?

I've been trying all night to dance with you...")

Jinx raises her eyes.

The Council Tower rises before you, gleaming in the red moonlight.

And finally you understand.

Your plan.

Slowly she turns towards you. Her lilac eyes search yours. You lose yourself in them, as you so often do.

Slowly lean forward.

A kiss.

Delicate, yet full of pain. Sweet, yet infinitely sad. A last moment in which you are not warriors, not monsters, not enemies of the world.

Only two lost souls.

("Hey there, little lonely, won't you stay?

I said, 'I would rather die than feel this pain...'")

Jinx raises the Shark Launcher.

You place your hand on the cold metal, stabilizing it.

She smiles. You smile back.

And then the tears flow, from both of you.

The weapon charges.

Blue light illuminates everything. A magenta shimmer in your eyes.

Jinx pulls the trigger.

The cry comes of its own accord.

From both of you.

A single scream.

Hate.

Desperation.

Shame.

Liberation.

A blue ray tears the red sky apart.

The Council Tower looms in the distance.

Two lost children - from different families, but with the same fate.

"It's you and me against the world."

This is a sandwalker, common in the “african” deserts of AfroEuroAustralAsia. These animals belong to a diverse group often called “the Headless”, or “Bluebloods” because most of them look like they lack necks, which isn’t quite true. Their ancestors, the giant malaysian cockroach, ironicaly has a very flexible “neck” for an insect. Some call them “Bluebloods” because they have blue, copper based blood, and also a lot more efficient vascular system than their sixty million years old ancestor. The sandwalkers are rather primitive compared to the other headless, but evolved extremely rapidly like the rest of them.

The malaysian roaches were one of the first animals to re-colonize the islands in oceania devastated by human activity (it was also very common for them to raft since the ocean levels were quickly rising) and so they appeared in an environment with many unoccupied niches and no predators with the exception of birds, that later established populations on said islands too. A lot of the already big roaches grew even bigger because the bigger you are, the more you can eat and the harder it is for the birds to swallow you. Larger individuals would also have slightly different calls due to their body shape, and so they would more likely socialize and mate with similarly sized roaches, resulting in a very slow sympatric speciation contributing to the headless’ / bluebloods’ evolution. The manmade nanite activity has driven many species to extinction, but in case of these giant roaches, they speeded up their enlargement process, because the odds we on their side and the nanites caused several random mutations that contributed to the developement of active respiration and later complex vascular system. As the sea levels were decreasing, the islands of what was previously Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua new Guinea and the neighbouring countries, increased in numbers, size and diversity, and so did the headless. They later dispersed into what used to be Australia, where they also thrived. When Australia started colliding with Asia (ca. 50my after human extinction), the headless experienced a huge decline because of the competition from mainland animals, but a few of them have managed to spread far into the west into Africa, which by now was separated from Asia and Europe by tall mountains instead of the sea. And among these bluebloods are the sandwalkers.

Oh and about the organ on the male’s back? These are modified wings. Giant malaysian cockroach females lack wings completely, and so do the sandwalker females. Males use these “wings” to serenade for the females with chirps and buzzes. The hind wing became a stump, while the fore wing went harder and immobile, completely encircled the hind wing and fused with the carapace. Males create these sounds by stridulation, vibrating the hind wing while it is in contact with the grooved carapace. The immobile fore wing acts as a sound amplifier. Different headless species have different shapes of these structures, creating vastly different mating calls. The larger ones make sounds similar to a pitched-down chainsaw and can travel for houndreds of meters.

And here’s a bit more cartoonish one. Her name is Head and she belongs to a young Yuo Yowa (a species not introduced yet) merchant who travels around the desert and sells low quality salt for high prices.

The misuse of police against student and faculty protesters in Texas was perhaps the most egregious example from across the nation.

It is also a reminder that unchecked abuses carried out at the border often foreshadow abuses of people living in the US interior. And like the students, migrants also continue to pay a high price for exercising their rights in Texas.

The Columbia University encampment of solidarity with the Palestinian people sparked a wave of student solidarity encampments across the nation, including at UT Austin. Student leaders said they objected to the “Israel-led, US-backed genocide in Gaza” and called for an immediate ceasefire as “Israel continues to bomb hospitals, schools, homes, and refugee camps while cutting off food and water to more than 2 million Palestinians in Gaza.” The protesters demanded UT Austin divest from Israeli companies they say are complicit in killing Palestinians.

Operation Lone Star has also included attacks on freedom of association and expression of groups providing support to migrants in Texas.

On June 15, Abbott renewed the “disaster proclamation concerning border security,” first issued in 2021 and triggering the deployment of thousands of state troopers to the Texas-Mexico border to arrest migrants on state charges, including criminal trespass. Abbott’s perpetuation of the invasion and disaster narratives are false and risk fueling white nationalist violence.

The deployment of state troopers to disperse the peaceful protest and arrest students and faculty is just one manifestation of the growing misuse of police in Texas, demonstrating mission creep of the troubled Operation Lone Star. AWS launched Amazon FSx for Lustre Intelligent Tiering today, a new storage class that offers the lowest-cost cloud Lustre file storage, the only fully elastic Lustre file storage, and almost limitless scalability. FSx for Lustre Intelligent-Tiering offers the lowest high-performance cloud file storage for less than $0.005 per GB-month and can save up to 96% on infrequently visited data compared to other managed Lustre options. Elastic file systems allow you to pay for the data you keep without upfront storage capacity provisioning since they expand and contract as you add or remove data.

FSx for Lustre Intelligent-Tiering optimises expenses by assigning cold data to a lower-cost storage tier based on use patterns. An optional SSD read cache boosts performance for latency-sensitive tasks. Intelligent Tiering performs well with petabyte-scale datasets or gigabytes of experimental data for your most demanding HPC and AI/ML applications.

Intelligent Tiering lets you adjust file system performance regardless of storage and offers up to 34% better price performance than on-premise HDD file systems. Infrequent Access: This tier keeps data not retrieved in 30–90 days and saves 44% over Frequent Access.

Archive: Data not accessed in 90 days or more is kept in this category at 65% less cost than Infrequent Access.

For redundancy and availability, your data is stored across multiple AWS Availability Zones regardless of storage tier, unlike on-premises implementations. Your data can be retrieved in milliseconds.

Making a filesystem

Use the AWS Management Console, CLI, API, or CloudFormation to create a file system. When building a file system, choose “Persistent, Intelligent Tiering” for deployment and storage. Selection of Metadata IOPS and necessary throughput. The SSD read cache is configured automatically after the throughput capacity.

After creation, throughput, metadata IOPS, security groups, and SSD read cache can be modified. Users can increase throughput capacity to meet workload needs by paying only for resources consumed.
