I just really need to write out the harrowing saga of my diploma authentication, so I can look back on this later and either laugh or cry.

So I needed my diploma authenticated according to Chinese standards for this work visa business. I have an original copy of my diploma in my immediate possession (because I just carry all these things around with me now for these kind of scenarios). It has an apostille on it from when I went to Korea. Apparently apostilles are not valid for China, and mine is too old anyways. Document agency people told me depending on whether or not the province I would be working in accepts it, they could either make a copy and authenticate it, or I’d have to get an original re-issued by my university to start over. Turns out I need an original. 

So I started pestering the registrar of my university about whether, when my diploma is re-issued, she can attach a very specifically worded, signed, and notarized statement of authenticity that the Chinese embassy requires. We argue back and forth with polite passive aggressiveness because she’s adamant that I don’t need this paper because she thinks I’m talking about something else. Finally I got a PDF of an example from the document agency, we agree that we’re not talking about the same thing, and she says to ask again whenever the university re-opens post-Covid-19 situation. 

Then. Then the recruiter tells me oh, you can just have your diploma verified by this Chinese government site that deals with the diplomas for Chinese students who’ve studied abroad. Why doesn’t everyone do this instead of dealing with that embassy authentication bullshit?, I wonder to myself. Well. First of all, it’s entirely in Chinese, zero English (although Google translate actually does REALLY well with super official language). I found a 21 page instruction PDF on how to use the website, got through 7 pages of it and had scanned a QRC code to download an app to scan another code that was supposed to scan my face to verify my identity so I could start the application (or something) but it wouldn’t scan because the code was expired because...this whole instruction PDF was completely irrelevant, I guess. So I finally found the right link for the application process. First I needed a Mainland China phone number. Thankfully my Taiwanese friend is living in Shanghai now and I borrowed his (the form actually recommended to use a friend/family member’s number...even though I could get the registration code by email). I went through multiple harrowing pages of intricate details and confusing questions that would all reset if I clicked the wrong thing or it timed out. I finally uploaded all my scans and photos that had to be a certain size and format, including a release form that HAD to be printed out, filled out BY HAND, and re-uploaded. 

Then I have to pay the fee. Of course they ONLY accept Chinese bank cards. I spend a while trying to connect my bank account to my WeChat account (fruitlessly, because I don’t live in China) and finally give in and ask this Chinese guy I worked with for 2 days at the last roadhouse if he can do it for me (because I’d be able to pay him back immediately by Australian bank transfer, otherwise I would have just asked Taiwanese Friend but I wasn’t confident about being able to send the money back to him in RMB on Transferwise) and thankfully he was super chill about it. It was accepted. My application is being processed. I’m home free, right? 

No. A couple days later I get a notification telling me my university has not updated some critical thing they need, so can I send my student ID, password, and the login link to the email provided so they can check my transcripts? (I already uploaded copies of my transcripts during the application). I can’t remember my student number for the life of me and lost access to my university email in 2014. I start pestering the university IT department to reinstate my access to these things. I also debate with my partner whether or not I should actually give the Chinese government this personal information of mine. I procrastinate on writing a reply in Mandarin because I’d have to look up so many words. He agrees to write a formal sounding apology in Chinese for me saying that I don’t have access to that account but they can feel free to contact the registrar (my ultimate passive aggressive revenge). Multiple emails later, I have access to my student account again but giving my password out would be like waving a giant red sign saying STEAL MY IDENTITY so I log in to my email (the hotmail account with the embarrassing LotR themed name that I made in high school but am using because China doesn’t like Gmail) to send the message my partner composed for me...

And I have an email saying the verification is done and I can download the certificate.

The process of procuring our visas has been a roller coaster of emotions: feeling hope that we might actually get our visas, and then valleys of disappointment when it seems the obstacles are too great to overcome…

We moved to Ecuador on a 90 day tourist visa (which expires December 9th), because the LA Ecuadorian consulate was not helpful in the least, and it seemed like it would be easier to apply for temporary resident visas once we got to Ecuador. As Riki said, what else are we going to do when we get there?

I reached out to an immigration lawyer in Cuenca whose website I found online, and she wrote me a several page email detailing which documents we needed to bring. So we spent the summer collecting our state background checks, FBI background checks, marriage certificate, birth certificates for all of us, triplex lease. We had to have all these things notarized, then apostilled. I had never heard of that before—it is basically an international notarization process. Of course you have to pay for every service. Oh, the lawyer also offered to help us get our visas—for $1500 per person!! I wrote back that her price was beyond our budget. Since I speak Spanish, I was determined to do the visa process myself, without paying any outrageous lawyer fees.

A week or so after we got here, I went to the same lawyer’s office with my documents, because all documents have to be translated to Spanish and then notarized here in Ecuador. And you can’t translate your own documents, you have to use an Ecuadorian translator. An assistant in the office took my documents, informed me it would be $350 dollars, and also told me that we would have to go to Guayaquil (4 hour bus ride), and stand in line outside of an office at 4 am, in order to get the document that shows we have no criminal record in Ecuador. And that this was a new requirement. SIgh. Really? With 2 young kids and an infant in tow?

I made an appointment online, and the first available appointment was 3 months later, on December 19th.

I talked to other people about the visa process, and another immigration lawyer (our landlord’s daughter) told me to do it in Quito, that she could get me an appointment next Tuesday, but that I needed my university documents (diploma, official transcript, certificate of attendance, all notarized and apostilled) because the lease wouldn’t be accepted.

Pretty much everyone told me a different story about what was required, so I decided to go talk to the visa people myself. Luz and I took the bus to Azogues (40 minutes from Cuenca), where we met with a lovely woman named Diana, who cleared up all my questions, told me we didn’t have to go stand in the 4 am. line, and told me to call her when I had my papers in order and she could help us, even though it was in advance of our appointment. That was a definite peak on the roller coaster. She did say that I couldn’t be a dependent of Riki’s, so would need either my university papers or my lease for our Tacoma house.

I set about getting those papers with the help of our tenant Mary & my sister Susha…

And when I received the documents from the States, and got them translated & notarized, I called her. Of course, she didn’t answer. No one answered for several days, and I couldn’t leave a message. So Luz and I took the bus to Azogues to find her…and she said, next Tuesday, 9:30 am.

Which was last Tuesday, we all went to Azogues on the bus (Tomu and Jade skipped school), with high hopes of submitting our papers. (After submitting the papers, there is currently a two week turnaround, where they let you know if you get the visa or not). The first paper Diana looked at was Riki’s “movimiento migratorio” which states when you entered the country. And there was a problem because it showed he arrived in 2007 but it doesn’t show he left in 2007, because he left via his sailboat via the Galapagos. So she told us to return to the police to discuss that, but she couldn’t process do anything until we got that fixed. Sigh.

She then looked at my papers, and all was good until she started perusing the stamps in my passport. How long were you in Fiji? 10 months, I reply. Oh…well, you will have to get a background check (apostilled) from Fiji because you lived there more than 3 months. Sigh.

When I told Riki about the Fijian background check, he was mad. What the F***? We’ll just have to move back, he said. But I like it here, I responded. Definitely a valley in the ole process. Who knew how long that would take? How expensive would it be to send it to us? If we had known in the beginning (back in July) that we needed that, we could have started to get it…but it’s like we are doing the best we can to try to get all the necessary ducks in a row, but we are doing so without complete information.

We went back to the police, and they said we had to show them a photo of Riki’s old passport, with the exit stamp…so we had to ask Mary to find Riki’s passport in a small box in our basement room full of boxes. (She found it in about 5 minutes, in the first box she looked in—THANK YOU MARY!! Luckily Mary, Jason & their son Emmett lived in Quito for 3 years, so they know what it’s like to deal with Ecuadorian bureaucracy)

So…it seems the Fiji background check process may not take too long. Fingers crossed that we get our documents before the December 19th appointment date. And fingers crossed that it goes smoothly, with no more surprises. Diana said we could come back whenever we get our papers and she would help us…

Some of our papers expire on January 6th (the FBI & state background checks), so hopefully it gets sorted before then, or we’d have to get new background checks.

Basically I try not to worry about it, but it is definitely a cloud of uncertainty hanging over our heads.

3 Ways to Get a Driver’s Licence in Ecuador (2020 Guide)

Unfortunately, getting a driver’s licence in Ecuador isn’t as easy as just turning up to the issuing authority and transferring your existing licence. But, the process isn’t terribly painful either - once you know how...

I’ve covered the 3 main pathways most expats use to obtain their Ecuadorian driver’s licence below. There is also an Appendix at the end that includes useful law extracts and downloads. 

Disclaimer: This is NOT legal advice. The laws in Ecuador at relatively elastic, so you may have a different experience. If you think this is complicated or have special circumstances, then I would suggest hiring a facilitator to help you through the process. 

Before we dive into the 3 licence options, ask yourself:

Do you actually need an Ecuadorian driver’s licence?

You may be able to save yourself the hassle of getting a drivers licence. 

Visitor visa

If you’re on a visitors visa, then your existing drivers licence is valid to drive or rent a car, so you’re all set without an Ecuadorian licence.

Temporary and permanent residents

As a holder of an Ecuadorian temporary or permanent residency visa, you can legally drive in Ecuador for 6 months upon entry. As it’s 6 months upon entry, my interpretation of this is that it resets every time you enter Ecuador. 

Leave Ecuador every 6 months -> No licence required

So, if your lifestyle has you leaving the country every 6 months, I don’t see any legal requirement for you to get an Ecuadorian licence. 

I’ve looked through the transport laws and I can’t see anything that obliges a temporary or permanent resident to get their licence within a certain time period within the granting of their visa. 

This covers my personal situation. Which meant for a long time I just kept putting off getting a local licence. I really couldn’t see the benefit of it. 

I finally decided to get a licence simply because I thought it was time. More to do with belonging to my adopted homeland and building community than anything else.

The only real practical benefit for me is having easier conversations with traffic cops that decide to play around a little in an effort to extract some extra cash for themselves. 

Stay in Ecuador 6 months at a time -> Licence required

If you plan on staying inside Ecuador for more than 6 months at a time, then yes, you’ll need to get your licence in order to legally drive. 

So, now you’ve worked out if you need a licence, let’s dive into the 3 different options. 

Option 1: Transfer Your Foreign Licence (Canje)

This is the easiest option in that it allows you to bypass the practical driving components.  

But, it’s also the option that requires more planning because you need an apostilled copy of your foreign driving record - which takes time and money. And, then you need that translated and notarized by an authorized Ecuadorian entity. 

The process for transferring an existing foreign licence to an Ecuadorian is:

a) Driving record

Order an official driving record from your home country. Cost varies by country. 

b) Apostille 

Have the driving record apostilled in your home country. Cost varies by country

c) Translate & notarize

Translate and notarize the apostilled driving record into Spanish by your closest Ecuadorian Embassy or an official translator (and notary) in Ecuador. 

d) Evidence of education

This isn’t listed as an official requirement in the official ANT documentation. But each of the driving schools we spoke to required some type of proof that you’ve passed high school (up to the 10th grade). 

You can argue that it seems a little ridiculous that you’d be granted a licence in your home country if you didn’t have some level of education. 

But remember, this rule applies to every foreigner applying for a licence, so they are trying to protecting themselves from an influx of drivers from countries that perhaps don’t have an education requirement. 

You can satisfy this education requirement by providing:

Cedula indicating level of education; or

Apostilled diploma

Cedula

In an ideal world, your level of education would be indicated on the back of your cedula. Driving schools generally accept Basica level or above. 

Unfortunately, a common practice is for expats to be issued their first cedula with the Incicial level of education. Be very careful if this is you because Inicial is not sufficient to transfer your licence. You will be denied. 

This happened to me. Even though I applied for the Professional Visa that requires a university level degree, my initial cedula still said Inicial. 

My visa facilitator explained that it was done this way to expedite the issuing of the cedula. Waiting for SENESCYT to authorize my university degree would take a while. So, I could either have my cedula that day, or wait weeks/months for SENESCYT to authorize my degree and then have the proper education level printed on my cedula. 

I opted to have the cedula that day. It turned out to be a good choice because it took around 6 months and many emails between my university, SENESCYT, my facilitator and myself to finally have my degree recognized with SENESCYT.  

Apostilled diploma

If you don’t have a cedula with the required level of education, you’ll need a diploma from your home country that has also been apostilled. The higher the better. But anything 10th grade or above should work. 

You may also need to have this diploma translated into Spanish and notarized. You may already have this if you included it in your visa application.

e) Blood card

You need a certificate showing your blood type. Many get this from the Red Cross for around $5. 

f) Psychosensometric examination at driving school

You’ll need to contact an authorized driving school (list here) to complete this at a cost of around $20. This test covers reflexes, dexterity, vision and hearing. Most people don’t have a problem passing it. 

Take evidence of your education and driving record with you as the driving school will need this. 

g) Get payment slip from ANT & book test

Once you’ve got all of your documents, including original:

ID (cedula) 

Blood type certificate 

Driver's license from home country

Evidence of education

Driving record certificate from home country (translated, apostilled & notorized) 

Psychosensometric examination certificate

Color passport photos x 2

Then you can head on down to your closest ANT to obtain a payment slip and book an appointment for the multiple-choice test. Remember, you’ll likely need a few days to study for the test. 

You can also generate the payment slip and appointment online, but you may have to wait longer for the appointment. Applying for this licence via the transfer option seems to be somewhat fast-tracked. But, this only happens if you apply in person (not online).  

h) Pay $142 at a bank

Take the payment slip generated at ANT to a bank so you can pay the $142. There’s probably banks within walking distance. Read our guide on transferring money into Ecuador if you’re unfamiliar with getting this. 

i) Take the multiple-choice test (study required)

At your test appointment you’ll need to undertake a multiple-choice test. You’ll need to answer at least 16 out of 20 correctly in order to pass.

The 20 questions are taken from a pool of more than 300 questions. We’ve included the multiple-choice questions below for you to download and study. When ready, you can complete practice tests at the ANT site. 

Once you pass the test, you’ll be issued with your licence. Yay! This generally happens on the same day. 

If you fail, you can book another appointment for 8 days. Go and study! If you fail a second time you can try again in 2 months. But, fail a 3rd time and they’ll make you start the process all over again. The psychosensometric exam certificate is only valid for 60 days.

Option 1 - Transfer: Pros and Cons

Conclusion:

Transferring is the best solution for those wanting the least amount of time at a driving school. But, the additional burden of the driving certificate from your home country requires a lot of organization. 

Option 2: Driving School - Driving Test Only

This is the best option if you don’t want the hassle of getting your driving record certificate, and then having it apostilled, translated and notarized. 

I chose this option precisely because I didn’t want to have to deal with this. I was already in Ecuador too, so sending this via DHL adds to the total cost. 

The process for obtaining your licence through this option:

a) Evidence of education

Either a cedula indicating Basica or above, or an apostilled diploma for year 10 or higher. See above section for full details. 

b) Blood card

You need a certificate showing your blood type. Many get this from the Red Cross for around $5. 

c) Driving test

Find an authorized driving school that will evaluate your ability to drive and provide you with a certificate. Some driving schools to start with are ANETA, Practi-Car &  A Conducir (Cuenca)

Take originals of your evidence of education, blood type and ID to the school. 

Practical driving exam

This is a fairly straight forward driving exam lasting 20-30 minutes. The driving school will take you in their car and provide instructions on what you need to. It’s likely the car will be manual, so I’d definitely check with the driving school if you only know how to drive an automatic.

Psychosensometric exam

This is the same as detailed above and includes reflexes, dexterity, vision and hearing. The combined cost of the practical driving and psychosensometric exams is around $47. 

Once you’ve passed the two exams, the driving school will send the certificate within 2-3 days. 

Once you have your certificate, the rest of the process is very similar to the transfer option. 

d) Get payment slip from ANT & book test

Once you’ve got all of your documents, including original:

ID (cedula) 

Blood type certificate 

Driver's license from home country

Evidence of education

Practical driving & psychosensometric exams certificate 

Color passport photos x 2

Then you can head on down to your closest ANT to obtain a payment slip and book an appointment for the multiple-choice test. Remember, you’ll likely need a few days to study for the test. 

Apply for Driver’s License For the First Time (Type B)

At ANT, you’re going to want to apply for the ‘Tipo B Primera Vez’ (Type B First Time). 

The full official requirements are included in the Appendix below.

e) Pay $68 at a bank

Take the payment slip generated at ANT to a bank so you can pay the $68 (it’s cheaper than the transfer licence). 

f) Take the multiple-choice test (study required)

Exactly the same testing process as detailed above. The only difference is that if you fail the test just once, then you will not be able to take it again. You’ll need to go to driving school. 

Actually, if you fail any test throughout this process - driving, psychosensometric or multiple-choice, then you’ll need to go to driving school. This is the biggest downside of this approach. There are no second chances. So, make sure you’re comfortable driving with a stick and have studied the multiple-choice exam well. 

If you pass, you’ll be issued with your brand new Ecuadorian licence. Congratulations.

Option 2 - Driving Test Only: Pros and Cons

Pros

Cheapest option if pass all tests

Less paperwork than Transfer

No extensive driving school required

Cons

No second chances at any test. Fail and go to driving school.

Conclusion:

This is the quickest and cheapest option if you're already in Ecuador. But, make sure you study for the multiple-choice test as there's no second chances. 

Option 3: Driving School - Full Course

This is generally the least preferred option because it requires a significant time commitment. The courses offered by each driving school vary a little, but you can expect something along the lines of:

Theory: 10 hours

Practice: 15 hours

Mechanics: 5 hours

Psychology: 2 hours

First aid: 2 hours

Some schools also offer flexible arrangements to complete the course full time, part time or even weekends.

The courses include the psychosensometric exam and certificate of approval. 

The cost will be around $170. 

The full process for obtaining your licence through a driving school:

a) Evidence of education

Either a cedula indicating Basica or above or an apostilled diploma for year 10 (or higher). See above section for full details. 

b) Blood card

You need a certificate showing your blood type. Many get this from the Red Cross for around $5. 

c) Driving school

Register with your driving school of choice. You should be able to make an initial enquiry online, but always best to phone them to confirm beforehand. 

Take your Cedula, evidence of education, blood type certificate and a passport photo with you to the driving school.

Complete the full course (34 hours!) to obtain your certificate of approval and psychosensometric exam. Note, it can take 3-4 weeks for schools to send these documents to you. 

d) Get payment slip from ANT & book test

Once you’ve got all of your documents, including original:

ID (cedula) 

Blood type certificate 

Evidence of education

Practical driving & psychosensometric exams certificate 

Color passport photos x 2

Then you can head on down to your closest ANT to obtain a payment slip and book an appointment for the multiple-choice test. Remember, you’ll likely need a few days to study for the test.

FAQs

Can I just buy a licence instead?

Facepalm. No. Don’t do this. Morality issues aside, you can lose your licence and get fined.  Or worse, have your permanent residency visa declined when it comes time to apply.

How old do I need to be?

From the age of 18 you can apply for a licence. I’ve seen you can also apply for a ‘minor adult permit’ from the age of 16, but the driving school may require a significant guarantee. 

Appendix

Ecuadorian Licence Exam Questions

The multiple-choice exam consists of 20 questions randomly pulled from the database of over 300 questions. You need to answer 16/20 correctly to pass.

Once you’ve reviewed the questions a couple of times, I strongly recommend taking some online practice exams.

Traffic Laws

Article 137

Article 137 says that:a) Tourist Visa: You can use your foreign licence for as long as your Ecuadorian visa is valid. Up to 6 months. 

b) Residents: Migrants (ie temporary and permanent residents) can use your foreign licence for up to 6 months upon entry to Ecuador.

Print the below extract and keep in your car with you in case you need to argue your point with a police officer that is after a little ‘lunch money’.

Art. 137.- Los extranjeros que ingresen al país con visa de turista, o al amparo de cualquier visa de no inmigrante, podrán conducir con las licencias emitidas en sus países de origen, durante todo el plazo de estadía que su condición migratoria se lo permita, pero en ningún caso por más de seis meses contados desde su ingreso al país.

Los extranjeros que ingresen al país con visa de inmigrante, podrán también conducir con las licencias emitidas en sus países de origen, hasta por un plazo máximo de seis meses contados desde la fecha en que hubieren ingresado al país.

Considerations:

In case of not taking the driving course, the evaluation approval certificate must be presented: psychosensometric and practice issued by the non-professional Driving Schools authorized by the ANT.

Have passed basic general education, verifying through information on the citizenship card or by means of a certificate of having passed general basic education or a bachelor's degree.

The psychosensometric examination will last 60 calendar days from the date of issuance of the Driving School authorized by the ANT. This exam must be done at the same school where the user took the course.

Cancel the value of pending fines and infractions, otherwise you will not be able to carry out the procedure.

The driver's licenses for professional and non-professional drivers without exception will be valid for five years, counted from the date of issue.

Many people ask me for advice and help on how to get an ESL job in South Korea. I have been putting this post off long enough, so I’m going to give you on what to prepare and know before embarking on this adventure.

Anyone can read this post, but as a South African, I will focus on finding and working in ESL in South Korea specifically. I’ve tried to put it down in 5 steps, but there are processes along the way and in between. This is as concise as I can make it.

What you need to know before applying:

Degree or no degree

I’ll be honest Korean language schools look for applicants with certified degree form a university. The best thing is that it can be a degree or major in ANYTHING. You simply just need an undergraduate degree. The only time you need a masters or more is if its for a university language job, and that a totally different visa (I’ll get into visas later on).

If you don’t have a degree, you can still apply for an ESL position in South Korea. However, you will go most likely have to go through a recruiting agency who can find a placement. Note, that those without a degree will earn less and will not have much say in where they are allocated.

  TEFL  or TESOL

In my opinion a TESOL is a much better option. It’s a one up from the TEFL, which has somewhat become outdated. There are numerous language schools around Cape Town which offer the TESOL and TEFL courses. TESOL will offer more practical hours to theory and help you prepare lesson if you need to do that at the Korean school. Whether you go to a school or language centre, they always look for this qualification. In most cases, it could also mean you get slightly higher pay.

Private language academy or government school?

Hmmm…. This will depend on what you personally want. I have never worked in an actual school. In my 4 years, I have only worked for private language centres (hagwon). They don’t require as much paperwork. So in this post, I will write what you need to for the private academies only.

What documents do I need to prepare?

The documentation tend to change over time, but this is what I know as the important ones for now:

Copy of degree/diploma (need to be apostilled and notarised)

Police clearance certificate  (need to be apostilled and notarised)

Contract from Korean company/employer

Application for E2 Visa (obtained from Korean embassy website)

Valid South African Passport

2 current ID photos

(For those wanting to apply to an actual school via the government will need much more papers such as both high school and primary school certificates.)

The Process

Step 1: How to get a police clearance in South Africa

When I first applied I could get the application at the local police station, and then print it out on the day. That doesn’t exist anymore. Here’s what you now need to do:

Visit your nearest police station and tell them you need an application for a police clearance.

You will pay a fee for this document. Public service does not exist anymore.

The office will take your fingerprints, which you will press onto the application form.

Fill out the rest of the form

Now that you have you application form, you will need to send it all the way to Pretoria.

You must pay the fee first and you can send the deposit with the form in the envelope to the Pretoria. I use the regular mail at the post office, as the processing time will take about 2 months in any case. Once issued it will take 2 weeks to get back to you with regular post.

Step 2: Getting your documents notarised

This is a fairly simple procedure. You only need to get the copy of your degree (with original) and police clearance notarised by a public notary. You can go to certified and registered law firm. They usually charge a fee.

Step 3: Getting your documents apostilled

What is an apostille? It’s a big red sticker you get from the court to confirm you documents are authentic. They used to do it at the Cape High court here in Cape Town, but that service is no more. For those living outside Johannesburg or Pretoria, you will have to send:

Original degree/diploma certificate

A copy of your degree and certificate which you need to first get notarised at a certified law firm to confirm it is an official copy.

You can get as much copies stamped for the fee, and you can keep it for later use.

When you have your police clearance and copy of degree notarised, you will have to resend them back to Pretoria to get the apostilled.

Now seeing as your actual hard earned degree is in this package I recommend you go private courier. I use the ever resourceful Docs for Expats, which have been around for some years. Great service and totally reliable. You send your document to them and for a reasonable fee they take you papers to the centre and fetch it when it’s done and they deliver it back to you. They will send it back via a local private courier for a much less rate than regular private couriers. This service is amazing.

If you don’t trust anyone one with your papers, then you can send it by yourself but be sure to include the return costs in the package. This will cost you more.

After you have your police clearance and degree copy apostilled, you can now start looking for an ESL job in Korea!

Step 4: How to find an ESL job in Korea

There are two ways: You either apply through a certified recruiter or you go job hunting yourself with no middle man. I personally apply by myself. I search job boards and websites and apply directly to the academies. This allows me to choose who I want to work for, what I’m prepared to put up with and, more importantly, where I want to work in Korea.

If you are going to apply for a government school, you need to apply via their website directly, or go through a recruiter in South Africa or Korea. They have lots of ads online to contact them and they’ll guide you through the process.

I don’t ever use recruiters, I’ve had bad experiences with them and they lie a lot. For first timers they tend to take advantage of the fact that you know NOTHING about the country. At the end of the day, they just need to make their targets and won’t care if they place you in the middle of nowhere. After the contracts signed and you are there you are now on your own and your employer’s problem. They tend to also lie about not having vacancies in various locations to fill up the least popular locations. I warned you.

Once you find a job

Here’s standard procedure if you finally get a Korean employer interested:

Email reply asking you if you have all your docs ready and when you can do a phone interview.

Sound cheerful and happy during the phone interview and polite. And speak clearly so they can hear your pronunciation is understandable. Korean language schools tend to prefer the North American accent, so as a South African you need to make you accent easy to understand.

After the interview and you are successful, you will receive an email with the contract

Print out the contract and sign it.

  Step 5: Applying for an E2 visa

If you are not an actual qualified teacher with zero teaching experience, like me, then this is the work visa you will be applying for in Korea.

The E2 visa allows foreigners from English speaking countries such as South Africa, UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to work as ESL teachers in South Korea.

An E2 visa requires the school or company to pay for your flights, pay for your accommodation, entitles you to year-end bonuses and specific work hours as a foreigner in Korea.

You are not an actual teacher, but will be referred to one regardless, and will focus on speaking lessons to students. You only focus on speaking and interaction in the English language.

Ok, ready to do this? Here’s the last step’s process:

Go on the Korean embassy in South Africa website and find the E2 visa application form, print it out and fill it in. In your package send:

Passport

Copy of passport

Two ID pictures

Copy of signed contract

Apostilled and notarised degree copy

Apostilled and notarised police clearance certificate

  Then you wait for you visa to be processed. Once that is complete, you should receive your flight from your employer to Korea to start your new adventure.

It hasn’t been such a long time since we last spoke, just two weeks, but a lot has happened! So, I wanted to check in and update everyone.

First of all, if there is ANYTHING at all you guys want me to write about regarding this process, you can definitely leave me an ask - anonymous or not - and I’ll address it to share with everyone! I admit I’ve had a lot of experiences that I haven’t shared, but that’s because I don’t want to bore anyone. So, if you want to know a little further regarding the application process or, I don’t know, how to pick the best TESOL course, you can definitely leave that in the ask and I’ll ramble my heart away.

Second of all, I’ve gathered all my final documents for the VISA application process. I was literally the first to receive my diploma, I think because I bothered them so much regarding this and my transcripts - matter of fact, this should be an entry of it’s own because I have one particular experience to share with you all. I got that notarized and apostilled, though, as well as my FBI check. Those were the last documents I needed and just a few nights ago I had a Skype call with the Vice Principal of the school to update him and to set a schedule for when the documents will be getting to him and where to go from there.

These last few months I haven’t had much to share because it’s a long process, but particular situations do arise and I hope to get the time to share them with you as I know it will help. As I head forward towards the actual VISA application, I hope to have even more entries to share with you. 

Right now, I am still two months ahead and have enough time, but I hear the process takes a good amount of time so I believe I’m right on track. Please hope for the best!
