Fandom and Literary Woes: The Arrogance of The Information Age and Literary Intellectuals

One thing I've noticed with the RWBY fandom and pretty much modern pop-culture and literary intellectuals is this nasty habit of locking concepts and tropes down into theories and formulas and try to completely rationalize what is "interesting" and what's "boring" and ruling everything else as corruptions or worthless little parasites upon what's the supposed "objective reality" and the end-all-be-all of a concept.

My first experience with this was with the "literary experts" coming out to rule out what's the end-all-be-all of concepts like Jaune and Pyrrha and Arkos in epic fantasy/sci-fi after the RWBY Volume 3 Finale

"Arkos ended tragically worked, ergo all couples and characters in epic stories like Jaune and Pyrrha(the dork knight and the warrior woman isolated by society) especially if they are directly inspired by them must also end that way to raise steaks and consequences, and they only way they can have a happy ending is in a sitcom/romcom. Doesn't matter what the epic story is about, what happens, their roles, or why, or why it makes audiences happy, if they don't end up dead in an epic, it means nothing."

When snobs consider your work or what you enjoy a bad because its only enjoyed by a smaller audience which then they pride themselves on they liking something thats enjoyed by the masses "it speaks to the human condition"

Then if you like something thats resonates by a larger audience, they flip it to "enjoyed by the unwashed masses" which then these prigs boast like something thats niche its because "we enlightened few understand something deeper and higher."

When it was the reverse logic 5 minutes ago

Cliche, niche, broad, what makes money, and tampering around with concepts in dissent and distaste is "bad" unless "the right people" like it and get what they want

Because they alone are the alchemists who can turn lead in to gold

Which is why they say its "interesting" to make evil superman out spite for superheroes like that in The Boys but a sexy magical girl Captain Marvel with her own set os sailor scouts like in Kamen America, especially made out of dissatisfaction and distaste how the inspiration was handled is "derivative" because the "experts" supposedly know what's the objective end-all-be-all reality of a concept and we don't.

They know, with a capital "G" and we don't.

And because they have "The Gnosis" and perfectly rooted in "objective reality" logic is fluid to whatever makes their way right.

They hav exclusive dominion over these concepts and tropes

Because again, they have "The Gnosis" and we don't.

Because it’s the Information Age and we have so much info, those who are oh-so objective and intelligent can use said information to find what’s the apex of a concept or a trope rule out everything else.

All as they judge, shame, and lecture us peons high up in their ivory towers hundreds of yards away on social media now to supposedly stay “objective” and not catch the disease of “subjective feelings” which they never elaborate

And like RetroBlasting said in his doing nothing video it’s no longer the analogue world and they know better than anyone else so they see our stuff on their feed and stop and jump in and lecture us

And and the critics often the resort to greedy reductionism(aka “Nothing Buttery”) to reduce our stuff to whatever makes it sound stupid/immoral which then they proceed to gloss over, ignore, and label the details

my biggest struggle with writing anything for rwby is that my personal preference definitely leans more towards "as little technology as possible"; i like fantasy-medieval and stuff like that, and remnant definitely has areas that lends more towards that type of story, if by nothing else then stylistically and frankly, mainly by vibes that i'm personally getting, but... there's also high-tech stuff... that one just can't get rid of bc it's pretty darn relevant to the world and here i am, gritting my teeth like.......... it's...... it's so close................

✨- How did you come up with the OC’s name?

Winter Carthmarrow in a lot of ways was designed to be alongside Autumn Saffworth, especially back when the project was called Seasonal Depression as a goofy pun as opposed to Animus Vitrum. Carthmarrow combines the bone theme (to go along with Autumn's blood theme) with a sense of destruction and fire (Carthago delenda est).

🌼 - How old are they? (Or approximate age range)

18-21. Her arc is a little longer than Autumn's to finish.

🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)?

Winter has had a couple over the course of her existence, but I'm currently in the process of reworking hers.

Originally she was meant to be paired with Summer/Midsomnir Titania because they were designed as opposite spirits for each other, but I've been wanting someone more conniving for her ever since playing with @mitspeiler and his girl Elmindreda as her partner. I think based on that, she would do well with someone conniving and devious, but dense and headstrong in her own way.

🍕 - What is their favorite food?

She likes salads, wraps, protein bars, and protein shakes/smoothies. Lots of health food that can be eaten pretty quickly and on-the-go. She also likes black coffee.

💼 - What do they do for a living?

Winter is currently a magic student that specializes in fire magic. She expects she'll inherit a number of shares in the family business when she comes of age, given that Autumn is pretty much worthless for it and incompetent in the business world. In a modern au she's practically built to be a lawyer as well.

🎹 - Do they have any hobbies?

She has a few but they're not especially enjoyable. Mostly just working out, training, studying, maybe playing an instrument. That sort of thing.

🎯 -What do they do best?

Winter genuinely is very talented at learning new spells quickly. She also has impeccable fashion sense.

🥊 -What do they love to do? What do they hate to do?

She loves dancing. It's a skill she's cultivated for social/heiress reasons, but she especially loves to teach girls their first ballroom moves.

She hates actually putting up with the male partners she ends up with during those. It takes everything she's got to be civil about it. She also gets easily frustrated in general, as she doesn't take criticism well (even self-directed).

❤️ - What is one of your OC’s best memories?

It's a memory that's soured since she left home, but one time she was exceptionally good at some milestone or test or competition, and Blanche let her loose at a fancy boutique with the credit card. Her Aunt even bought her something to eat afterwards.

✂️ - What is one of your OC’s worst memories?

I think I will keep the duel canon, meaning that after throwing the match because she doesn't want to kill [love interest], Blanche stabs her in a way that will incapacitate but not harm her long-term, with the intent of shipping her off to marry some loathsome political ally.

🧊 - Is their current design the first one?

It's pretty close! Honestly the only thing that's really changed is the specifics of her dress and her jewelry. Her palette and a lot of her facial features have been pretty set since day 1. The main thing that's changed is her role in the story.

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

Todoroki from My Hero Academia. Winter was originally born out of a cartoony split-personality au for him before I turned them all into their own characters, and also girls. She's also heavily inspired by the Schnees from RWBY. And my love for hot, mean, misunderstood women.

🌂 - What genre do they belong in?

I could see her in basically any drama, especially something with a competitive social element like business-themed. However, she's in a high fantasy adventure story currently, on a journey of self-discovery.

💚 - What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality?

Cis lesbian, she/her.

🙌 - How many siblings does your OC have?

No siblings as she was orphaned at a young age. Autumn is her only sister-figure.

🍎 - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?

Winter was very close with her mother, Rosé, and her father, Enamuel, and they loved her very much. After they died when she was two or so she was taken in by her Aunt Blanche and Uncle Theros, who were always a little distant. It got worse when Autumn was born and they started neglecting her, but it got slightly better as she proved to be very talented where Autumn proved to be somewhat of a dud, magically speaking. It was never very wholesome or supportive of an environment though.

🧠 - What do you like most about the OC?

I like how she's got the mixture of the extreme competence and talent with the utter incompetence when it comes to intimacy and vulnerability. She also SUCKS but I can fix her.

✏️ - How often do you draw/write about the OC?

Rather frequently! I used to actively roleplay Winter and I really must say she's one of my favorites. I draw her quite a bit too.

💎 - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC?

I don't think so. She doesn't get to weasel out of all the shit she's done that easily.

💀 - Does your OC have any phobias?

Even with her fire magic, she gets kind of nervous around uncontrolled large fires. She's also scared of intimacy, especially with her internalized homophobia.

🍩 -Who is your OC’s arch-nemesis or rival?

Ideally she would have one of each: a rival that pushes her to be better and better that she events falls in love with, and an arch-nemesis shitty betrothed that doesn't care about all that, just wanting to use her for her bloodline.

Since late 2017, so 6ish years.

🍥 - What age were you when you created the OC?

I would've been 16!

Under the Cut: approximately 1,200 words of the opening to a modified version of the RWBY AU I posted about earlier this week: a fantasy (with magic) slice of life story about Ruby as an alchemist and shop owner, Yang as a ranger (protector of the city), and a several hundred years after the apocalypse and trying to rebuild world.

Or, My Time at Portia meets Management of a Novice Alchemist (w/ Vox Machina, Flying Witch, and a few others around for good measure) but make it RWBY.

Zwei huffs a snort through his muzzle as he pulls up short on the path. Ruby looks over her horse’s long neck to peer down the path. There, past the spiralling dirt path, near the gleaming blue waters and behind the stone and wooden walls is Patch, the town that will soon be her home.

Yang sits astride her mare, Celica, on Ruby’s right. Both horses are laden down with bags and boxes and all sorts of supplies. They brought everything they could with them, leaving the rest with their parents on the wagon, a few days behind.

“What do you think?” asks Yang. “Is it everything you wanted?” She leans forward on Celica, her eyes on Ruby.

Ruby stares at the town. It’s so much smaller than Vale, the city they’ve spent most of their lives in. It seems quieter, slower, and Ruby can’t help but take a moment to revel in it. From this height, she can peer behind the walls and catch sight of the world they protect. The brightly painted houses that rise and fall with the hills. The rooftop gardens and balcony patios. Spiralling staircases of stone connect the higher and lower parts of the town.

And people, perhaps a dozen or so in sight, bustle as well. They move from one building to another, talk to each other in the streets, and a child is even dancing. Or Ruby presumes they’re a child. It’s hard to tell from this distance.

“Looks amazing,” says Ruby, honestly. “What about you? Kind of important you like it. It is your posting.”

Neither one of them expected for Yang to get a posting so soon out of Ranger training. She’d only gotten her license a week ago before she received a high priority posting, a permanent posting, in Patch, a little town to the northwest of Vale. Apparently, they were having a rough time and needed assistance.

The sort of assistance they figured they’d need forever. Must have cracked open a dungeon, or maybe a tomb. Those sorts of things could be decades long problems.

“It looks boring,” says Yang. She pulls on the reins to Celica and guides her in front of Ruby and Zwei. “Come on, let’s go see where the fun around here is.”

Ruby rolls her eyes and follows as Yang and Celica take off down the hill at a fast trot toward the city. Zwei chuffs at the idea of going faster with so many bags and bobbles attached to him. Ruby doesn’t blame him. He’s already being incredibly patient for an animal that’s supposed to be a dog and not a horse. Especially not a pack horse.

“Don’t worry, buddy, we’ll get there when we get there,” says Ruby, patting Zwei’s neck. He trots forward with his dog-like gait, bouncing Ruby a bit in her saddle. She’s glad she packed her glassware so well, or else it all would be shattered by now.

From the open gate of the town rides a person on a sleek, dappled grey horse. It’s a smaller breed than Celica, and sits a bit smaller than Zwei, too, but it looks sturdy and it eats up the space between the two groups with powerful, lengthy strides.

“Ahoy!” calls the woman astride the horse. She has dark brown skin and a mohawk dyed multiple colours, with bright eyes that gleam in the morning sun. “Name’s Harriet. What can I do for you folk?”

“I’m Yang, this is my sister Ruby. I’m here about the Ranger posting,” says Yang.

Harriet grins and gives Yang an appraising look. “You’re the new Ranger?” Yang nods. “Oh hell yes, you look way more capable than the last guy they sent.”

Yang and Ruby exchange a nervous look. Is it that dangerous out here?

“What happened to the last guy?” asks Ruby, voice wobbling slightly.

Harriet scoffs. “Nothing. Marrow’s just fucking annoying. Like the kid brother I never wanted.”

Yang gives Ruby a long, amused look. “Tell me about it.”

“Hey!” protests Ruby.

Harriet chuckles. “C’mon, I’ll show you around. Help you get settled.” She turns her horse around and throws an arm forward, toward Patch. “You’re gonna love it here. We’ve got more dungeons, tombs, and sealed up bullshit than half the fucking province put together. This place is awesome.”

That’d explain why they need so many rangers.

Yang grins. “Hell yeah!” She punches a fist into the air.

Ruby rolls her eyes. Fighting is cool, sure, but Ruby’s curious about the forage, and the local animal populations, the gardening possibilities, and, most of all, her new shop.

Town alchemist. It has a nice ring to it.

As their mounts guided them down the path, toward the town, Harriet spoke over her shoulder.

“Patch is one of the older towns in Anima, but we’ve never managed to expand all that far because we got founded on the edge of the Wilds. We’ve been pushing lately, because we need the farmland, and that’s how we cracked open the system that we called in Marrow for.” Harriet rolls her head with her eyes and grins at them. “But he’s not much of a spelunker and we need someone who doesn’t mind the caves.”

What sort of ranger didn’t like caves?

“Hope you aren’t scared of tight spaces,” says Harriet.

“No way,” scoffs Yang. “I’m fearless.”

Ruby rolls her eyes. Fearless. Sure. And she’s seven feet tall and buff. But Yang’s fears aren’t the sort you find in a cave or a dungeon.

They reach the bottom of the hill and follow the wide dirt and gravel path toward the front gate. It transitions into tightly interlocking stones that stretch beyond her eye within the town, proper. The stones look like the massive ones sprawled across the wild expanse of land that stretches between Vale and Patch. The off-white, sometimes pale grey stone gleams in the light and makes everything brighter.

“How many people live here?” asks Ruby.

“Couple hundred, or thereabouts,” says Harriet, over her shoulder. “Once you learn the place, you get to know everyone in it, too. It’s not hard to keep track.” She shrugs. “There’s more out in the farmland, especially back the way you came, but those are the ones who live in town. We wanna expand, but…” She trails off.

The dungeons. For all they’re ‘cool’, especially to people like Yang and Harriet and other rangers, they’re not exactly a perk for ordinary people. Mostly, to regular people, they’re just scary, dangerous, and a reason to stay the hell away from some place.

She’d seen the farms on the way here. Big, sweeping things maintained by worn machines and worn people. They seemed happy, at a distance, but Ruby wondered. She’d worked on farms during her time at alchemist college. Not for long, but long enough to know it was hard, long work that the whole world relied on. Work that deserved better recognition. Maybe she could help, with her shop.

More land. More safety. More people. More supplies. The constant cycle of survival and growth and expansion in this strange and ancient world.

“Your shop is gonna be off River Road,” says Harriet. She passes under the open arch of the gate and Ruby lets out a quiet gasp at how different this place is compared to Vale.

B: Any of your stories inspired by  personal experience?

One of my old RWBY fics is me angsting about my neurodivergency via the lens of Professor Ozpin. NGL, I'm considering deleting it, it's... embarassing, and not my best work.

On top of that, the backstory for one of my WoW OCs was based on, for lack of a better term, my daddy issues. It's a fucking cringe backstory and it just turned melodramatic and I'm so glad I reworked it.

But for a more light-hearted response, it's a fic I'd like to write. When I was young, one of my teeth was loose. I complained about it to my older brothers, and one of them responded with: "Oh, your new tooth is going to grow into a vampire tooth" ...or something along those lines. Knowing my younger self, she was terrified and probably cried.

I think it's a perfect concept for Klint and Barok van Zieks!

F: Share a snippet from one of  your favorite dialogue scenes  you've written and explain why  you're proud of it.

As much as I want to post a snippet from my roleplaying on WoW, I won't, because it will require a paragraph of lore-dumping, which I am prone to do at a moments notice, just read any of my AU fics.

I have a LOT of WIPs, and some of them do have dialogue I quite enjoy. However, one of them just takes the cake: it's from an AU inspired by Baldur's Gate 3 (a very good game!) and tried to work within the canon of Dungeons and Dragons. In it, Klint is a bard of eloquence, rather than a ranger. I decided to make Balmung his stuffed hell-hound that Mama van Zieks made for him and he cherishes deeply, and my favorite dialogue is Klint talking to that Balmung:

”What was I thinking, Balmung?!“ No one would hear him, he had wards specially installed to prevent that. In here, he was free to talk how loud he wanted to an inanimate object, and no one to judge him for it, either! “Acting like some sort of seductress, touching her with my bare hands!” He gives Balmung a squeeze. “I don't want to be a harlot, and, I must have frightened her terribly with these talons of mine.”

This too, which happens some lines later:

“Hells!” He snatches his head back in. “Can you believe this, Balmung?” The dog did not respond, on account of being just a stuffed animal.

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

First off, Guillermo del Toro. He is one of my idols and I look up to his storytelling a lot. I love that he does not sacrifice color to tell dark stories, and that his works have taught me to accept that I'll write what I want! Another one is Zack Morrison who writes and draws the webcomic Paranatural, which I have kept up with since high school. They made the swap to a blend of writing and art sometime in 2021, and the descriptiveness and cleverness of the writing has made my jaw drop.

Next, Another one is Eiichiro Oda. That man can casually reference something he wrote hundreds of chapters ago, and no matter how crazy things get, it feels perfectly plausible within the world of One Piece. But unfortunately it's come at a cost due to him being a mangaka, and I must stress the importance of taking care of yourself before anything else.

These two are well-known for their diverse cast of characters, and Zack Morrison does little, but effective things to make the characters stand out even more in the mixed setting and it's genius. However, an honorable mention to Andrew Hussie and Homestuck, for popularizing the concept of using limited things in text like numbers and cases to distinguish the characters.

Now, the next is sillier: Elizabeth Hoyt and Tessa Dare. Yes, they crank out regency romance novels but they know their niche, damn it! My first romance novel was Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt, and it's helped me really come to terms with the fact that what I read is not necessarily what I want. I love the fantasies romance novels bring, but the idea of actually BEING in a romance makes me want to run away screaming!

Day Three (17th): High School/College (Pyrrha is a star quarterback, Weiss is a fencer. Both find themselves equally distracted by the other)

Day Four (18th): Faunus (Weiss is a centaur faunus, and trains with Pyrrha's instructor to better use her traits in battle)

Day Five (18th): Rivals to Lovers (Weiss and Pyrrha are top-class drivers, going head to head for charity with a forefeit for the loser)

Looking for rp partners part two

This will be my fandom list. If you looked at my rp kinks for part one then you may have found yourself here. Again this will be 18+ so looking for rpers who are comfortable rping such things. This will cover a wide range of fandoms and I may forget some so that is on me, otherwise if you look at this thinking tame or rather softcore, it might not work. A lot of times smut is often going to outweigh plot though not like it won't be there.

There might be titles in here you don't know and there might be some you aren't familiar with. My advice is don't force yourself to do something in that scenario. I may have failed to post it last time but I can rp; canon x canon, oc x canon, canon x oc, oc x oc. This will likely come in handy when I put up my overall canon list and pairings. My advice is always read part one before going to part two...it just makes more sense that way. If there are titles not on here that you can do and might want to recommend to me you can...just can't make any guarantees I will be familiar with it.

In the case of unfamiliarity I find it best to opt to AU or Modernized just to save face case I butcher a beloved canon character. Oh and while some of these fandoms seem like they are the squeaky clean...they won't be so much when we are done with it. I LOVE the idea of looking back on either pair when they were Hop and Gloria/Victor’s age challenging the gyms themselves. Or either pair navigating both a new relationship while also going through the major changes they see at the end of the game (Piers leaving the gym to Marnie to focus on his music, Sonia becoming the professor, etc.).
