Relistening to Hello From The Hallowoods is fun because sometimes the reaction is "Oh, the first person Hector interacts with is a dead man in the water and also he's missing an arm. Not foreshadowy at all." And sometimes it's "ah, that's Democracy's back story. I get it now."

And other times it's

"WAIT was The Countess was going to kill the Count with Walt's sword?" And "WAIT Creep gets introduced in EPISODE 65?" and also "WAIT NIMBUS IS CANONICALLY A TABBY WITH GREEN EYES?"

Not sure if this has been asked before but how do you name your characters? Are there any inspirations you’ve taken for certain groups of characters such as demons or indescribables, I’m particularly interested in the indescribables names they all feel very different yet all connected.

Naming the character is always the hardest part of writing for me so I would love to hear your process ^^

Character names fall into two categories for me.

One of them is where the name falls into place with the earliest character concept, and the development follows, such as Diggory Graves or Oswald Biggs Botulus or Misters Raven & Writingdesk. The name arrives and then I have to figure out who they are afterwards (To a certain extent, this kind of happenstance also applies to the Indescribables, because I realized the first two were named Lolgmololg and Nikignik purely by chance, and I thought the rest should follow the same syllable convention).

The other kind is names where I have to go hunting for a last name or both, such as Riot or Jonah or Ricou, in which case I'm looking at any names from pop culture that I can incorporate, any fun language meanings I can bake in, or lists of popular names in the hometown of that character. Lady Ethel's last name, Mallory, wasn't set in stone until I found that together it could be interpreted to mean Unpleasant Noble.

Sometimes names have to change around a little bit in the process - Solomon's name was Amadeus up until I started writing his first story, when it became apparent that it would absolutely spoil the ending from the start, and he needed a more biblical aspect to his name anyways, as he'd shaped up to be a little more religious than anticipated.

Okay, Hello From The Hallowoods episode 1, let’s go!

building off of the last ask, while polly can’t swim for shit, both mort and yaretzi are fantastic swimmers!!

they did have to stage a rescue when polly fell into a pool once. it’s not like he can drown he just doesn’t like being wet

Ok so I just finished season 1 of Hello from the Hallowoods, so here are some of my thoughts.

Polly is probably my favorite character, and his group was definitely my favorite to listen to. (Probably because their story was pretty self contained and only met with the other characters at the end , and they didn’t really even talk to anyone else.)

If I think too much about Percy I get really sad .

Olivier makes so many bad decisions, but I love him/her/them.

I well and truly understand Nikignik’s annoyance of Lady Ethel, because every time she interrupts, I want to punch her and go back to my little stories.

I honestly don’t really like Riot, but I am kinda interested where her character goes, I was kinda hoping she would decide to wander the Hallowoods and do odd jobs here and there, like Walt seemed to.

From what I have seen, Riot and Olivier get together? Which seems weird to me, and maybe kinda toxic? Like, Olivier tried to hand Riot over to the Instrumentalist, (granted, they/she/he were/was just doing a job), and then Riot threatens to kill her/them/him. (Speaking of which, was Bern really going to let Riot decide what to do with Olivier? Cause even on a good day Riot doesn’t really seem like the most levelheaded, much less while she’s still grieving Walt.)

There were definitely some plot lines I didn’t really follow or care about too much. I was a bit confused with Barb and the other characters that show up in his first episode.

I kinda feel like Walt’s death was a bit unnecessary at that moment, or at least could have been done a bit differently. I just don’t understand how Solomon was faster in that moment, if Walt had hesitated maybe, but it just kinda felt like Solomon was too op, if it had been that he used a ghost or something I’d get it, but it was a contest of their physical capabilities, and i can’t believe that Solomon is more fit than Walt.

Also I’m a little sad one of the two canon Ace characters dies. (Is Polly Ace? He gives me Ace vibes.)

I really like Diggory and Percy’s relationship, but I do hope they make other friends as well. Just cause I don’t like it when couple characters almost exclusively interact with each other. Riot and Diggory do have a nice friendship though.

I find Nikignik very interesting, He’s not doing this out of love for the characters, but out of love for the very thing that corrupted their world. (As far as I can tell anyway)

I really like the music for the show, especially the end music. I also like the music that plays at Barb’s hotel. And there were some that sounded really familiar, but I’m not sure what from.

WHAT

I finished season 1 of Hallowoods and I decided that I am including the liveshows and all the other little things in my listening

So I'm starting liveshow numero uno and I'm not gonna lie, my first reaction was a bit of a sigh because as much as I love the characters, a break that seems to be only about them having a good time and being ready for festivities when I already have season 2 ready! Waiting for me right there!

AND THEN STORY NUMBER THREE HIT ME LIKE A BUS

OH YE CHILL JUST MAROLMAR'S MEMORY BEING IN RIOT'S NIGHTMARE JUST LIKE THAT NO BIGGIE AM I RIGHT

NIKIGNIK JUST LOSING IT, ME JUST LOSING IT, AND THEN NIKIGNIK HAS THE AUDACITY TO APOLOGISE AND CALL HIMSELF A THING????

I want so badly to dress as the wandering night gaunt for Halloween but I'm having a tough time finding all the references to it and descriptions and my adhd is sabatogibg me so hard. If anyone wants to help or has drawings for me to refer to PLEASE♡
