Fairy Ring
The phrase "fairy ring" first appeared to describe a circle of mushrooms found in grass fields in the 1590s. Having said that, the connection is significantly older, dating back at least to the fourteenth century. The first recorded instance of the Middle English word for fairy ring, elferingewort (meaning "elf-ring-plant" at the time), dates back to around 1300. This word referred to a ring of daisies created by elves dancing. In France, it is known as ronds de sorciers, which literally translates to "sorcerers' rings," and in Germany, it is known as hexenringe, which means "witches' rings." Folklore claims that fairy rings serve as portals to the realm of fairyland. When a fairy, pixie, or elf makes an appearance, a fairy ring will appear. Fairies used to dance in a ring while holding hands, and the mushrooms' circular pattern shows where they took place.
In most cases, fairy rings are considered to be hazardous locations. Most often, people believe that fairies danced and left these worn spots in the grass. Although fairies usually appear at night, they can be seen during the day. You can see the imprint of their feet running across the grass as they dance. They make frequent use of the mushrooms as a place to sit and relax. The abrupt development of the rings in the morning provided evidence of a dance that had taken place the previous evening. A fairy village that is hidden underneath is represented by the rings in Wales. Welsh legend also believes that the rings represent places of fertility and good fortune. French tradition claims that enormous toads, who swore a curse on anyone who disobeyed the circles surrounding them, protected them. Participants in the fairy dance within the circle illuminated by the moon may experience disorientation in time and space, potentially leading to their permanent disappearance. Some people experience a magical journey, while others experience a pause in time. There are some sites that claim you need to dance for a year and a day, yet it will seem like you've only been dancing for a few minutes.
There is a story told in Irish folklore about a young lady who had just returned home from purchasing bread. When she went to investigate the origin of the music, she stumbled into a bunch of fairies. She had heard the song already. She entered the fairy ring when they asked her to dance with them, and she accepted their invitation. After spending some time dancing, she informed them that her mother was waiting for her to return home. When she arrived at her house, she was taken aback to realize that her mother appeared to be much older than she actually was. When her mother inquired about her whereabouts, she responded by stating that she had gone to the market to purchase bread. Her mother revealed to her that she had been absent for over twenty years. It is strongly advise individuals not to enter a fairy ring under any circumstances. You might die at a young age, turn invisible to the world of mortals, find it impossible to escape the ring, or swiftly journey to the world of fairy tales. Furthermore, you may be forced to dance around the ring until you die from exhaustion.

Plucked from the Fairy Ring.
Plucked from the Fairy Circle. A man saves his friend from the grip of a fairy ring. A great deal of folklore surrounds fairy rings. Their names in European languages often allude to supernatural origins; they are known as ronds de sorciers (sorcerers' rings) in France, and Hexenringe (witches' rings) in German. In German tradition, fairy rings were thought to mark the site of witches' dancing on Walpurgis Night, and Dutch superstition claimed that the circles show where the Devil set his milk churn. Western European, including English, Scandinavian and Celtic, traditions claimed that fairy rings are the result of elves or fairies dancing. European superstitions routinely warned against entering a fairy ring. Mortals who have danced with the fairies are rarely safe after being saved from their enthrallment. Often, they find that what seemed to be but a brief foray into fairyland was indeed much longer in the mortal realm, possibly weeks or.

It had been just over a week since the last boat trip to the smaller island, the rest of them that week having been cancelled due to an unforeseen circumstance and once again the boat from the little village of Ballinskelligs was ready to take the next group of visitors across to the Hexenringe. The morning had an unpleasant chill to it, the early winter mist only beginning to clear as guests pre-emptively gathered at the pier's registry building around 7am for the boat to depart at 8.
The crowd consisted of thirty people, which was the maximum of those allowed to venture at any one time throughout the week save for various months of the year when celebrations were hosted. Those gathered still took up most of the space in the office, a wide array of visitors; It was true that there were mostly those of the alternative style that gathered, young adult females in groups made up the majority of the bunch. Among them included some older couples as well as groups of friends.
Sat at the desk to greet each group one by one sat a pair who looked in their mid-twenties, one male and one female. If they weren't, the pair certainly looked like twins, both sporting dark copper coloured hair, pale skin and dark auburn eyes. They were dressed smartly in white and grey clothes, the dull tones making the fire in their hair and eyes brighter.
The woman was sat upon the desk, beside the pile of papers that her supposed brother was busy filling in as they addressed the groups one at a time before sending them out towards the boat. Her hair was loosely wavy, hanging down just past her collarbones and framed the buttons to her tight fitting shirt which was fastened to the neck. One leg was resting atop the other as she greeted the visitors, several of them by name.
The male was sat at the desk, one arm flung over the back of the chair as he sat with a lazy slouch, loosely holding the pen as he scribbled away some details on a sheet of paper. His hair grazed his shoulders, hanging straight with one side pushed behind an ear to stop it getting into his eyes. Unlike the female, his shirt was lazily open at the top by a couple of buttons, much to the delight of several patrons. There was no denying that the pair of them were very good looking, every feature seemingly too faultless.

Between every two pines there is a doorway to a new world.
Think of any fairy tale illustration of elves or goblins sitting on or under a toadstool, and most likely the cap of such a fungus will be bright red with white spots. So I decided to draw a fly agaric fairy in a fairy ring🍄🥰
Some legends say that fairy rings are, in fact, good luck. While Welsh tradition doesn’t recommend entering them, it is good fortune to grow crops around them and allow livestock to feed nearby. They are said to improve fertility and fortune. In Germany, fairy rings were called Hexenringe, or “Witches Rings,” and were believed to be places where witches danced to celebrate Walpurgis Night, a festival that welcomes the beginning of spring.

Over the past few years I've seen two fairy rings (possibly more), one made out of some gorgeous,bluish-mauve flowers and the other made out of mushrooms, and I'm not sure if I should be worried. They're often seen as dangerous but they could also be good luck omens? I view them as beautiful but also eerie (Whichever Ask word you'd prefer)
Ah, fairy rings. Also known as Elf Circles, Elf Rings, Pixie Rings. In French they are the “ronds de sorcières“ and the Germans knew them as “Hexenringe“. In German tradition they were said to be the circles where witches danced on Walpurgis Night, while the Dutch believed they were where the Devil himself would set his milk churn. Tyrol myths attributed the circles to the fiery tails of flying dragons and the French thought they were guarded by giant bug-eyed toads that could curse you upon entry. In Western European cultures such as English, Scandinavian and Celtic the circles were attributed to Faeries and Elves dancing. “elferingewort” was a Middle English term used to describe a ring of daisies where elfs were said to have danced. The 19th century Welsh called them the “cylch y Tylwyth Teg“, and some claimed the elfs and pixies used the mushrooms as umbrellas, while the Scottish saw the mushroom caps as a convenient dinner table for small fairies. They are said to be quite dangerous. Terrible things have happened to those who break the line of the circles in old stories. Some describe curses of nightmares and ongoing bad luck. Others talk of humans trapped in the circle, or forced to join the dance until they fell dead to the ground days later. On certain nights, such as May Eve or Samhain, it was believed to be especially deadly to cross them. Many humans found themselves dragged permanently into Faerie and were never seen again. Others were lucky enough to be rescued from this fate by someone from outside who had the presence of mind to wait for a certain time or to follow a certain set of actions. And of those few mortals that have danced with the Faeries and escaped, the old stories claim that they are never safe again, always more at risk from the Fae than the people around them. However, not all myths about the circles paint them to be so grim. Some Welsh tales say that sheep who eat the grass of a fairy ring will flourish. Sir John Rhys recorded a tale about a man who was supposed to have cleared away a nest of rooks from a tree surrounded by a fairy circle, the Fae were said to have paid him in half a crown every day, but were so insulted when he told his friend the tale that they stopped giving the gift. They are sometimes painted as places of fertility and fortune, sacred places filled with magic and life. But always with their danger. The Faeries should not be disturbed lightly, and their boundaries are to be respected. However, you ought to know that not every circle of mushrooms or flowers is actually a fairy circle. Especially not if its on land that people own and use. They like their privacy and tend to hold their revels where every human for miles around won’t come falling into their circle by accident every five minutes. It would get a little old after a bit. You can usually tell if a circle is of Faerie. There is a sense of it, something otherworldly about it, like a smell or a color that is unfamiliar to you or just too faint for you to identify properly. A sense of sacredness or power. Eerie is a good word I think. They can be good omens if you treat them with respect and don’t bother them. Or they can spell out misfortune or worse if you go interfering with them.

Shouto Todoroki x Reader {Vampire AU}
Buy me a coffee!! <3
The buzz of cicadas died around him. His boots crushed the undergrowth, moulding it into the earth. Nearby, in the shade of a few forbidding trees (dangerous things, which would easily conceal vampires or other such creatures), there was a circle of mushrooms, inside which sat a young woman. The expression she adorned was one of absolute peace. He startled, reaching for the glinting dagger hidden within his robes. He knew full well that looks could be deceiving. The female made no indication of life - there were no breaths, not even the subtlest, and her eyes were almost zipped shut. She perched on the borders of life and death, legs crossed in deep meditation.
Hunting was often a tedious and tiresome job, yet witnessing something so sublime, so beautiful, was definitely a first. She was obviously a vampire. No mere human could even hope to reach her level of perfection. Her plump lips exploded with colour; they were blood-red, despite the overall paleness of her features. (H/c) hair flowed from her head, ghosting her shoulders and delicately shaping her face.
Sensing an unfamiliar presence, you motioned to the circle.
"It's reserved."
He sighed, thankful for the icebreaker. For a few moments, he said nothing. He only stared. You cracked open a single eye, relishing in the beauty of the hunter before you. Instantly, he became captivated - ensnared in your gaze. His hand ripped away from the dagger. He couldn't kill such a beautiful creature. He refused to. His family could stuff their ridiculous traditions.
"Why are you here? Why haven't you run? You know what I am, don't you?" He questioned, watching carefully for any hint of danger.
A strange sound, sort of like laughter, passed your lips. "How should I begin, hunter?"
After realising that you weren't in the least bit concerned about being around one of his kind, he relinquished, shuffling slightly, but eventually settling down in front of you, just outside the circle. It was amusing - fairy circles were supposed to retain goodness and block out evil. Perhaps you were different to all the other vampires, the typical, blood-sucking, rabid, feral animals that prowled at night, drawing protection from the moon. In his short, sixteen years of life, the young hunter had sought to kill as many of those beasts as humanly possible. He was conditioned into believing that they drove his mother insane, and turned his older brother into a vampire. The image painted on the stained-glass window of his mind was one of utter carnage - dismembered bodies lying in the blood-soaked grass, heads tumbling down hills, or sitting uncomfortably on spikes on the outskirts of twisting towers. They were fashioned to be cannibals. God had not envisioned them at creation. They were the work of the Devil and his henchmen. Yet, this woman didn't display any of the conventional characteristics. Not as far as he could tell, anyway.
Instead of glowing crimson eyes, with a hungry, predatory look, you possessed simple yet wonderful (e/c) orbs. Rather than being ferocious and lashing out upon discovery, you remained calm, even as he observed you more closely. There didn't appear to be evident surprise, worry or fear. You hadn't yet attempted to flee, nor had you endeavoured to maim and devour him. Although you looked quite dead, you sounded very alive. He wondered if you had been mortal once, or spawned into an unfortunate line.
"Tell me why the fairy circle. Aren't they supposed to represent good? Virtues?" He asked, in an almost wistful tone, which quite alarmed him.
If you noticed, you failed to mention it. "They are called 'Ronds de Sorcières' in French, or 'Hexenringe' in German. Do you know why?"
Shaking his head, he responded, "I only know Japanese."
A smile carved your lips. "They are associated with witches, fairies or elves dancing. Folks of old often warned against treading into one. You could be cursed or killed. It was said that, if you entered one, you might become aware of the elves; it could put you in thrall to their illusions."
"Have you ever seen one?" He enquired, leaning forwards slightly.
"I'd like to. I was rather hoping to dance with them." You commented.
Todoroki frowned. "Isn't that dangerous?"
You opened your eyes. "I can deal with a few malevolent spirits."
Placing your hands together, you glanced at the surrounding woodland, half-expecting something to pop out of the darkness. Possibly an elf, or a fairy, confused and angered to find a young woman in their ring - their private space. Perhaps a dragon might fly above you, maybe you would be slain. You had always been a curious, adventurous soul, so risking a second death was nothing extraordinary. You had no parents to speak of, and therefore nobody to advise you against such scandalous activities. You hunted when hungry, slept when tired, played when bored. Your appearance and lack of pulse were all the indication than you were brilliantly different. You knew this boy's intention, but his resolve had already burned out.
"Would you care to hear a rhyme?" You asked, standing with the grace and elegance of a snow-white swan.
He nodded in confirmation.
"He wha tills the fairies' green
Nae luck again shall hae :
And he wha spills the fairies' ring
Betide him want and wae.
For weirdless days and weary nights
Are his till his deein' day.
But he wha gaes by the fairy ring,
Nae dule nor pine shall see,
And he wha cleans the fairy ring
An easy death shall dee"
Todoroki thought that was a little strange, but decided not to question it. Instead, he allowed your commentary to flood his ears. He realised far too suddenly that he enjoyed listening to the sound of your voice; it was clear and certain, calm and collected, girlish but not squeaky. He felt comfortable enough in your presence to flutter his eyelids shut.
You stated, "A traditional Scottish rhyme, which summarises the danger of fairy rings."
He hummed, but didn't bother to form any coherent words. Thinking back to that day, he remembered everything in vivid detail, especially the parts that concerned you. During the subsequent days, he approached the same clearing, trying to find a sign of you. He wanted to see you. Desperately, and he wasn't too sure why. Obviously, his family knew nothing of his exploits. When about two weeks had passed, Todoroki hauled himself up to the fairy ring, sitting beside it. His mind wandered. He pondered over your enhanced abilities - would you be able to hear him? Did you possess immortality? Could you shape-shift? Were you a telepath? Could you control nocturnal animals or spread plague? Would you kill him if ever he caught you again?
While he was having an existential crisis, you watched from within the shadows of the trees. Their branches curled around your body, twisting so as to grant you sanctuary. You briefly wondered if he might crawl into the fairy circle, in an effort to draw you out.
He didn't, and for some reason, you felt very grateful.

“A Deed Without A Name” by Lee Morgan Notes and Thoughts part four
Recap of part three, available here if you haven’t seen it.
In part three, we discussed the witch’s association with death and reformation, hedgecrossing and developing relationships with liminal places. We also discussed western occultism and the daimonic self/double, the fetch-beast, riding plants, and initiatory processes, and last but not least the idea of fat as vitality.
The Witches Circle & Ritual Security/Sanctifying of Space
Brief lore: Sabbats have usually retained the theme of being gatherings, with feasts shared and festivities around a fire, with the different between the faerie gathering and the witches sabbat being the difference in light vs dark, and eating things binding you to the faerie gathering, uncontrollable dancing, ecstasy dancing at the witches sabbat. ‘Hexenringe’ or ‘witches rings’ are believed to be made by dancing faeries.
There’s not a lot of evidence to suggest that witches ever worked in circles, meaning that the idea of a perfectly circular cleansed ritual space might be entirely new.
The popularity of a circle may have come from the fairy ring phenomenon mentioned, hexenringe.
It also could possibly originate from lore of fairy doctoring, where a faerie doctor draws a ring around themselves with a charcoal from a stick with a burned tip in the dirt or floor for the purpose of healing or divination.
There’s also the mention of sanctifying of space done by the familiar spirits, rousing them through offerings of smoke and drumming or by bells, rattles, or whistling; any method the witch has been instructed to call upon them by. Morgan mentions that faerie doctors employ a similar tactic of drumming.
Historically [something I have read in multiple places, for example like ‘The Silver Bullet’] objects like the witches boot or witches bottles were instilled in walls for protection or buried around the property. From what I’ve found, there were more often than not a lot of tactic’s regarding keeping witches out.
After all of that, Morgan goes on to say there are in fact times that you should employ the use of a full circle, particularly for necromancy and exorcisms.
If there’s a worry of ritual security, Morgan mentions that after performing a ritual to protect yourself you can begin by putting salt on the working area and sweeping it out with a broom. Then, inscribe a piece of wood or leather with the words: Rotas, Opera, Arepo, Sator. Then the object should be wrapped and hidden somewhere close to the place where you perform witchcraft in the home.
He goes on to talk about Modern Traditional Witchcraft employing a ‘Triangle of art’. [More on that here]
The practice has been absorbed from grimoires over time into Traditional Craft, though the explanation for the circle and triangle was given to Morgan in relation to necromancy.
Suffumigation/Offerings
Morgan mentions traditional methods of offering to spirits, like dragons blood burned in fire in Welsh folklore [before divination]
John Walsh, a witch of the West County, burned frankincense and St John’s Wort before his rituals
Grimoires of ceremonial magic have complex suffumigations that can be burned to aid manifestation of spirits.
More Fetch-Beast Stuff
The fetch-beast must choose you; though your intuition can help you figure out possibilities. Morgan describes a type of divination to discover your fetch beast which I’ve posted here.
Common fetch-creatures of Europe are: fox, mouse, dog, badger, eagle, raven, snake, horse, bear, deer, owl, and boar. Predatory animals out number the prey animals, usually, only creatures of extreme physical power like a strong or wild horse are the exception to that rule, or small animals like mice that have strengths involving secrecy, cunning, and adaptability.

fairy ring, anyone
“Jamie, don’t move!” Splendor was relieved to see James stop up short at his cry, but it was quickly overpowered by his awe and unease as he moved to stand beside him, peering down in wonder at the circle of mushrooms. “Hexenringe…”
“What?”
“The ring! This is where the witches and fairies come to dance! If you enter their circle, they will sweep you away to their land,” he whispered, taking ahold of James’ arm. “Step back, if you please…This is magic we cannot touch.”
