Hervey Bay to Sydney
The day started early at 6am with a lovely walk along our beautiful beach for the last time. The usual selection of locals were already promenading, their dogs weaving around their owners' legs, balls flung far for them to exercise at speed, one man with a tennis racket fires balls further and dog responds instantly. It is a chance for conversation as well as satisfaction for their animals.
Moving day today, combined with saying goodbye to the Renault, so we find ourselves once more pedestrians, which seems really odd. We have had this car for a month, and we have grown quite accustomed to it despite its rather strange features. We have taken it for a 1,400-mile holiday, and it didn't look too much the worst for wear when we handed it back. Irrationally, we vacuumed it out for Mr. Avis, so it looked pretty good, we thought. Couple that mileage with that we clocked up with the Ford Ranger in the Northern Territories section, and we have driven a total of 4,150 miles in all through this fascinating country.
Mr Avis gratefully reclaimed our Renault at Hervey Bay Airport with very little fuss. The airport is most likely one of the smallest you will find anywhere. So small, they are borderline polite! We were asked at the check-in desk if it was okay to be in charge of the emergency exit since we were in seats 1D and 1E. I said it would be, but perhaps we might practice opening the door first a few times to familiarise myself with the mechanisms because I take these safety responsibilities most seriously. This without fail always instils a sense of panic in airline staff and without exception in this case. I can always move you to another seat she insisted. It was fine after Martine managed to calm her down, and I'm sure in time she would probably see the funny side of it. The flight was 1 hour 45 minutes duration, and we had to wind the clocks forward an hour on arrival, putting us now 11 hours ahead of UK time. We didn't get off to a great start as our Jetstar Airbus A320-200 romped into Hervey Bay nearly 30 minutes late. No explanation was forthcoming, and absolutely no training was made available regarding our duties should the aircraft have to make an emergency landing onto anything alternative to tarmac runway. At that stage, presumably no-one cares if you get it right or not. Happily, I was not required to operate any of the highly tempting levers, and heroic actions were avoided and saved for another day, and we touched down through sunny skies to temperatures of 32 degrees
Sydney airport is a train ride away from anywhere useful in Sydney, but that is no hardship usually since the double decked train service is extremely good. However, the trains were not running over the weekend due to industrial action, and we were consequently just a bit concerned if we would get into Circular Quays okay to get the ferry to Manly. In the event, all was well, the trains and ferries were running as normal, and it was just like we hadn't been away as we stepped out of Manly Wharf to find Christmas in full swing. Well, as much swing the Australians can manage, not being that good at swinging anything in the entertainment department. All we had to do was drag a couple of suitcases and hump a couple of rucksacks plus rubbery chicken with SB uphill to our lodgings for the next 5 nights. So, we took a taxi instead.
ps. Cunard's Queen Elizabeth was waiting in Circular Quays on our arrival.
pps. Tomorrow, being Christmas Eve, we shall have to nip into town to buy Christmas dinner. A ham might be favourite.
ppps. Apologies for more beach photos, it's all I have today. They were taken this morning.

Secret History 7: Spicy Cinnamon
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/secret-history-7-spicy-cinnamon/
Secret History 7: Spicy Cinnamon
Tumblr media
In early 1977, budding criminal Geri Bellino travelled to Sydney to recruit strippers for his new Brisbane club, World By Night. Among his hires – Spicy Cinnamon, or Shirley, as many of us knew one of Brisbane’s best-loved entertainers over the next few decades.
I first saw Shirley on television. She was working for the Peter Moselle Revue, a drag show that toured regional Queensland. During a season at a Hervey Bay Club, local television station Wide Bay 8 recorded the show for later transmission.
Other than the showgirls being advertised as men, there was nothing very shocking about the show – typical English music hall.
Until the end – when – without warning – Shirley stripped stark naked right there on the tele – on a Sunday night.
Well, not actually stark naked. She still had on 3 small roses – one covering each nipple and the last decorating a thin line of pubic hair in her crotch.
Geri Bellino hired Shirley and seven other entertainers to perform similar acts at World By Night.
Public nudity was illegal in Queensland. Very little was legal in Queensland. Joh Bjelke Petersen, a holier-than-thou Lutheran farmer ran the place as his own personal fiefdom, and the northern state enjoyed renown as Australia’s most conservative jurisdiction.
Geri Bellino later claimed the strippers at World By Night were never actually nude because they wore pubic wigs – muffs. Now, perhaps they did. Maybe just that night. But I lived for a while with a couple of the strippers and spent many a drunken night in the club and never once saw a muff.
It didn’t matter, though, because Bellino and his lawyers had a secret plan ready for the night they inevitably got busted for public nudity.
Spicy Cinnamon
Spicy Cinnamon – Shirley – formerly of the Peter Moselle All Male Revue, was one of the four transwomen employed as strippers at World By Night. She was also one of the most popular performers – tall, statuesque, glamorous and possessed of the cheekiest grin this side of Las Vegas.
So when Bellino and the girls fronted court charged with willful exposure, the defence lawyers put Shirley on the stand first.
When the prosecution demanded harsh punishment for the terrible crime of exhibiting a vagina, the defense immediately called a doctor who testified that that was impossible. Shirley did not have a vagina.
Sadly, Bellino and his lawyers did not let Shirley in on their cunning plan.
“They’ve ruined me,” she told reporters, “To hell with it. I’m leaving this town and going to Sydney, where people are more understanding.”
Shirley told the media hers had been the best-kept secret in town.
“Now, all the customers will be out to give me a terrible time. I really couldn’t cope with that.”
But despite her misgivings, Spicy Cinnamon remained a popular drawcard. She was back on stage at World By Night the following night and for years to come. She also became a popular performer in drag shows.
And I saw her first on the tele!

Discover the Majestic World of Australia's Whale Watching
A Symphony of Whales
The southern coastline of Australia, particularly regions like Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, provide ample opportunities for whale watching. The most common species sighted include humpback whales, southern right whales, and occasionally, orcas and blue whales.
Humpback whales are the stars of the show, known for their acrobatic displays and extensive migration route. Witnessing their playful behavior as they breach and slap their tails on the water's surface is an unforgettable experience. The southern right whales, recognized by their callosities on their heads, often gather in sheltered bays to mate and give birth, offering close encounters for lucky onlookers.
Best Locations for Whale Watching
For an unparalleled Australia whale watching experience, head to locations like Hervey Bay in Queensland, renowned as the whale-watching capital of Australia. The calm waters here provide a safe haven for humpback whales and their calves during their migration. Another hotspot is Sydney, where whale watching cruises depart from the harbor, offering a chance to witness these giants against the iconic city skyline.
Further south, the Great Australian Bight in South Australia offers a unique opportunity to observe southern right whales up close, particularly around the Head of Bight. Here, the towering cliffs serve as a dramatic backdrop for these colossal creatures. Western Australia's coastline, including places like Albany and Augusta, also hosts these gentle giants during their annual migration.
The Experience
Whale watching tours cater to all levels of adventurers, whether you prefer a leisurely cruise or an exhilarating zodiac ride. Knowledgeable guides provide fascinating insights into whale behavior, migration patterns, and conservation efforts. Many tours also offer hydrophones to listen to the enchanting songs of these marine mammals.
As you scan the horizon, keep an eye out for the telltale signs: a spout of water, a flick of a tail, or a massive breach. These moments build anticipation until suddenly, the ocean erupts with the graceful presence of a breaching whale. Cameras click and hearts race as these magnificent creatures reveal themselves in their natural habitat.
Conservation and Education
Beyond the thrill of spotting whales, many tours emphasize marine conservation and education. Learn about the threats facing these creatures, including habitat loss, climate change, and marine pollution. By participating in responsible whale watching, visitors contribute to ongoing research and conservation efforts aimed at protecting these gentle giants for future generations.
Plan Your Adventure
Whether you're a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or a curious traveler, Australia's whale watching season promises a truly unforgettable experience. Remember to book your tour in advance, especially during peak season, and prepare for an adventure that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the ocean's most magnificent inhabitants. So, pack your binoculars, set sail, and embark on an extraordinary journey into the world of Australia's whale watching.

Australia - New Horizons - Neue Horizonte
Tumblr media
Looking back, it was probably a work colleague who gave me the idea of traveling to Australia - by talking to me about his travel plans. Sometimes enthusiasm is contagious. I was mostly traveling with an international tour group (provider “Contiki”) in Australia: Americans, Dutch, French, British, Japanese, Danes, Germans and of course “Aussies” aged 18 to 35. It can be quite stressful, if you are traveling with wild party people for a total of almost 5 weeks. The party highlight was certainly “The Woolshed” in Cairns, where it is customary to dance exuberantly on the tables when the music starts to play. Contiki is a provider that offers you the opportunity to try many leisure activities. I tried or dared to do river rafting, jet skiing, 4-wheel motorcycling, skydiving, ballooning and sailing. Trying new things generally makes us braver - it shows our subconscious that we can master such things. I didn't find this out until years later, when I did a little research into psychology.
I made two trips to Australia: the first trip was from the north along the west coast (please do not underrate the beauty of Western Australia!!!) - the second trip was from the north along the east coast and later along the south coast. On the first trip I met D. - with whom I later maintained a long-term acquaintance. She was a feminist and I loved to discuss and argue about this topic with her - and by that learned a lot from her about women's view on this world. I could still laugh today: I talked to her in English for almost half an hour until I realized that she was German - and even from my area. She spoke English fluently. It was because of her that I didn't climb Ayers Rock (Uluru) one year later because she told me that the rock is sacred to the Aborigines. The Aborigines deserve respect because they were there before us and we „white people“ simply pushed them away from the land where they had lived for thousands of years. D. later married a New Zealander whom she had met on a Contiki trip through the USA and I lost contact with her after she emigrated to New Zealand. There are so many stories, big and small, that broadened my horizons and my courage on these journeys.

Trip2: Darwin - Kakadu NP - Katherine NP - Uluru (Ayers Rock) - Kata Tjuta - Kings Canyon - Alice Springs - Cairns - Great Barrier Reef - Magnetic Island - Airlie Beach/ Whitsundays - Hervey Bay/Fraser Island - Brisbane - Surfers Paradise - Byron Bay - Sydney - Blue Mountains - Melbourne - Great Ocean Road/ Twelve Apostles - Adelaide

Sunday 22nd December 2024
Dundowran
Our first coffee of the day took rather longer than usual today, spinning it out, neither of us particularly feeling like getting going. After the full day yesterday and the moving on tomorrow, it made sense to have a quiet day on the beach.
Wherever we go, I like to take a look at its history; trying to make sense of the journey these places have taken to present themselves as we see them today. To date, most locations have had a story to tell. That is until now.
Dundowran, a suburb of Hervey Bay, is an extremely attractive little village of about 1000 people and appears to be a mix of owner occupied dwellings and holiday lets. If anything, tourism might be its way forward. The origin of its name is somewhat obscure but could possibly come from the Kabi language Thundarun indicating plum tree. It's only historic reference is mention of a school here in 1891, which closed in 1960. So, for once, perhaps I need to settle for the conclusion that this is simply a new town. Possibly, it might be known for its rather splendid beach? Dundowran Beach is huge, and a walk along it this morning took almost an hour each way, and appears to serve as a village meeting place, at least among the dog walking fraternity. Dogs of all shapes and sizes may be seen on the beach, but a really interesting resident is the soldier crab. Armies of thousands of the tiny little things, at low tide, could be seen marching in formation. When approached, they simply disappear into the sand, and it's like they were never there.
So I thought I'd look into Hervey Bay instead, and I find that although this place is many times larger than Dundowran, it still really does not have much to say for itself. Captain Cook did not visit because the waters were too shallow, and he also did not realise that Fraser Island, K'gari, was not joined to the mainland. He did, however, name the bay after Augustus John Hervey, soon to be third Earl of Bristol, a naval chap who was also to become Lord of the Admiralty.
So, our day was not to be wasted, and we sat on the beach with the baking hot sun, masquerading in a clear blue sky, and contemplating our move tomorrow first to the tiny airport at Hervey Bay, and hence our flight to Sydney and then on to Manly on the Northern Beaches.
ps. Sitting and reading my book on the 5 or so mile empty beach, I noticed a short, solitary vertical stick near to where I was. A dog being walked, made his way across to the stick, and had a wee.
pps. We watched the crowds at the solstice at Stonehenge on the ABC News. They all looked so grey and cold there. I think we should stop here.
