Did you know that the US National Confectioners Association recognises four different chocolate days a year?

These are World Chocolate Day on July 7th, National Chocolate Day on both October 28th and December 28th, and International Chocolate Day on September 13th. I have no idea what distinguishes International Chocolate Day from World Chocolate Day, nor why the US needs two different National Chocolate Days in addition to the two others. I'm not complaining. I just have no idea.

September 13th, in particular, was chosen in honour of the Hershey's founder, Milton S Hershey, who was born on this date.

I find her deeply charming, actually. She is in a party dress that looks like a Hershey's Kiss. I can't argue with that. It's a cute idea and it's well-executed.

Hershey company, don’t know if it’s American or not the company that is. Though apparently their He For She compaign is Canadian. There is a trans woman in the add that will be about celebrating International Women’s Day. And transphobes are shitting themselves because there is a beautiful trans woman in the add named Fae Johnson. Transphobes get stupider and stupider and more empathetically challenged by the day.

Several companies that produce dark chocolate have high levels of lead and cadmium, confirmed by an independent consumer report published December 15, 2022. Trader Joe's is especially dangerous. The report uses the maximum levels allowed by California law because there is no federal limit.

There are multiple reasons for the heavy metals contained in these chocolates. Lead is naturally in cacao and must be removed when it is processed. For the companies listed, additional lead seems to accumulate on the shell of the beans from sources unknown between when they are picked and processed. Cadmium builds up in cacao trees the longer they live. These trees must be regularly cut down and replanted to avoid reaching toxic levels.
