Popcorn Wells
While we’ve both grown older since first becoming friends in ‘60s, the sweet, sparkle was well and truly still in her eye as I spotted her coming through the international arrivals gate. We gingerly – no pun intended – ran across the crowded room and straight into each other’s arms.
She held my face in her hands and said something that shocked me to my very core.
“I can’t believe it has been 16…

The first time I left my house, my Realtor said, “I think there is an upstairs.” We toured the place, but never saw any up stairs. Of course we went back. We just didn’t notice a staircase tucked in a small room. The house is 1,200 square feet total.
I adored my Realtor. It was 2008 and the housing market was collapsing. He wore a suit jacket everyday and drove a BMW. I learned the jacket covered all his tattoo and his car was super cheap because the inside was horrible. He was a Buddhist that sold million dollar homes on Lake Minnetonka. And my $100,000 budget in Minneapolis. I think he legitimately cared about finding me a good, safe piece of property. I found him on the internet.
Soon after I moved in, I had a friend stay. We were roommates in college. We fixed up the upstairs and she was planning on staying for about a year. Five years later, she moved out, Ryan moved in. I had big dreams for the space. Big dreams. It will be three years in June and I finally feel like I have the space usable.
In total, it will have taken me 9 year to finally use the space that sold me the house. It kind of feels like finding $20 in your pocket. You always had it, but it feels free.
Space details
You walk in the front door. You are in the living room. You go about 10 feet to 3 stairs on your left. You go up them and 1 feet towards the kitchen. You turn left again at a door. Open the door. You are in a 10×10 room. On the right is an opening to stairs. Go up them. There is a small landing area with a window. Do a sharp right turn and you are in a basic attic. There is two windows that are too high to see out of, and one window that overlooks the back yard and a little bit of down town Minneapolis. No closet, but a cubby.
Timeline
2008, I removed the carpet and wall paper. I added a Pergo floor and painted it green. I never finished the stairs, landing area or trip. Someone else lived in it for 5 years.
2013 Ryan moved in and his cat Penelope took over the space. We put a futon up there and called it a guest bedroom. It was primarily used for storage.
2014, I started working from home more. I turned the space into an office, but could never find the right lighting or flow. I started working on the stairs. I removed the wood paneling and fixed the stairs.
2015, I removed the builtin dresser and quit my job. I decided to turn the space into a part-time work space for whatever AnnetteScape would be.
2016, I launch AnnetteScape and official start working from home. I spend all my time working in the living room.
May 7, 2016, I have worked in the space for 3 days and it works. I told Ryan I was done and he said, “Until you decide to change everything again.” Not saying I won’t change things, but I really like it.
Herman’s Head
Herman’s Head is a show from the 90’s. I was 9-12 while the showed aired and absolutely loved it. My pre-teen self understood the show to mean a really smart dude with a cool job has a neat space to figure out problems.
I totally need to go back and watch the show again, but that was my inspiration when putting things together. I was a director at a science museum so I know a bit about curating. But remembering a show I watched when I was a kid was difficult. I just remember it always had everything extremely organized in a zany way.
Areas of the room:
Stairwell –
We are opening the main floor space so the upstairs won’t be so hard to find. But they will always be encased. Too expensive not too. The walls were covered in this horrible fake wood. I know I’ve left the window open so it has seen water. Once gone, I had more problems. To be continued…
Landing area –
I did not put the Pergo in the landing area. I did ceramic tile, but it was done so poorly I tore it out. I also tore out a built in dresser. It was probably added in the 50’s and a horrible use of space. Now I can use the space, but it looks like shit. To be continued…
Main Area –
Standing Desks – I made a standing desk out of closet doors and old furniture. It is very neat, but needs improvements.
Storage Desk – I make a storage desk out of Ikea furniture and an old closet door.
Box wall – Temple Grandin thinks in pictures, I think in boxes. I keep everything in boxes.
Grandma’s Futon – finding uses for Ryan’s grandma’s old futon
AnnetteScape – The world between the internet and the Annette
Cubby space – I hate it so much
Roof view – I can see a bit of downtown Minneapolis. And my back yard.
I’ve decided to only use my computer upstairs so I am going to better understand how to use the space. But it is awesome.

All the rest
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of our friendship. That started when I was a top’s port, just a tiny shit. My mate was a mighty sailing man, this stripper brave and sure but of his five co-stars that met me, only one saw me as more than a whore.
More than a whore.
That co-star, was my love Dawn Wells.
While she misunderstood and thought I didn’t consent when the *weather*…
