Naming of Parts by Henry Reed (1942)
To Alan Mitchell Vixi duellis nuper idoneus Et militavi non sine gloria Today we have naming of parts. Yesterday, We had daily cleaning. And tomorrow morning, We shall have what to do after firing. But today, Today we have naming of parts. Japonica Glistens like coral in all of the neighbouring gardens, And today we have naming of parts. This is the lower sling swivel. And this Is the upper sling swivel, whose use you will see, When you are given your slings. And this is the piling swivel, Which in your case you have not got. The branches Hold in the gardens their silent, eloquent gestures, Which in our case we have not got. This is the safety-catch, which is always released With an easy flick of the thumb. And please do not let me See anyone using his finger. You can do it quite easy If you have any strength in your thumb. The blossoms Are fragile and motionless, never letting anyone see Any of them using their finger. And this you can see is the bolt. The purpose of this Is to open the breech, as you see. We can slide it Rapidly backwards and forwards: we call this Easing the spring. And rapidly backwards and forwards The early bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers: They call it easing the Spring. They call it easing the Spring: it is perfectly easy If you have any strength in your thumb: like the bolt, And the breech, and the cocking-piece, and the point of balance, Which in our case we have not got; and the almond-blossom Silent in all of the gardens and the bees going backwards and forwards, For today we have naming of parts.
I can still remember when, many years ago, this poem turned up in 4th Form English Literature and completely mystified a class of 15-year-old boys because:
Almost none of us had ever seen a military rifle, never mind taken one apart, and the notion that doing so could be even slightly poetic had never crossed our 15-year-old male minds.
Gardens, flowers, bees, poetry and military rifles don't usually turn up this close together in the average 15-year-old male mind.
There's deliberate juxtaposition of contradictory imagery, the contrast of mind-numbing boredom with unfettered imagination, being stuck in a classroom when you want to be somewhere else, and all the other things you're supposed to consider when analysing a poem that may - or may not, you won't know until it's too late - play a role in end-of-term exams.
However hearing it aloud was rather different.
School had a pretty good tape library (radio programmes of plays, speeches etc.) and by an extraordinary fluke this, read in part by poet Henry Reed himself, is the actual recording played to my class.
That was when we realised there are hints and implications in this poem which may indeed turn up in quite a few 15-year-old male minds. They're just not usually discussed in 4th Form English Class.
At least they weren't discussed in mine... :-D
(Like most poems with a distinctive metre, this lends itself to parody. Here's one about cooking...)

"The best of us never came home..."
-Fred Thursday, S5E2: Cartouche
It's Memorial Day in the US. I was very close to my grandfathers, both of whom did come home. Their experiences—one in the European theater and one in the Pacific—were tame compared to most but affected them for life. The stories they told me have had a big impact on who I am.
I didn't know that Henry Reed, the poet who wrote "Naming of Parts," (the poem Thursday recites at the end of S5E4: Colours) worked on codes and ciphers at Bletchley Park during WWII. How much more fitting for Endeavour could a poet be!
The following is a somewhat idiosyncratic recitation of the poem that I really like. Let your ear get used to it and stick with it. It's really moving.

"Naming of Parts"
From 'Lessons of the War' by Henry Reed
"Vixi duellis nuper idoneus
Et militavi non sine glori"
Today we have naming of parts. Yesterday,
We had daily cleaning. And tomorrow morning,
We shall have what to do after firing. But today,
Today we have naming of parts. Japonica
Glistens like coral in all of the neighboring gardens,
And today we have naming of parts.
This is the lower sling swivel. And this
Is the upper sling swivel, whose use you will see
When you are given your slings. And this is the piling swivel,
Which in your case you have not got. The branches
Hold in the gardens their silent, eloquent gestures,
Which in our case we have not got.
This is the safety-catch, which is always released
With an easy flick of the thumb. And please do not let me
See anyone using his finger. You can do it quite easily
If you have any strength in your thumb. The blossoms
Are fragile and motionless, never letting anyone see
Any of them using their finger.
And this you can see is the bolt. The purpose of this
Is to open the breech, as you see. We can slide it
Rapidly backwards and forwards: we call this
Easing the spring. And rapidly backwards and forwards
The early bees are assaulting and fumbling the flowers:
They call it easing the Spring.
They call it easing the Spring: it is perfectly easy
If you have any strength in your thumb: like the bolt,
And the breech, and the cocking-piece, and the point of balance,
Which in our case we have not got; and the almond-blossom
Silent in all of the gardens and the bees going backwards and forwards,
For today we have naming of parts.

Beb if Creelson and Doomreed met eachother, would anyone get along or would it be like fighting cats?
I don’t think Victor would get along with anyone, honestly, unless the partnership benefited him in some way and he could later betray them. Reed is an exception, of course, but even then I think Victor’s still struggling trying to come to terms with the fact that his love for Reed may be genuine, in the sense that a part of him actually wants to have Reed just for himself and he doesn’t really want to betray or hurt Reed; the concept as a whole is confusing and terrifying to him, and Doom doesn’t like being confused or terrified — point is, he’s already struggling enough trying to accept the fact that he loves Reed Richards, I don’t think he can afford trying to genuinely get along with anybody else unless it benefits him.
(that being said, though, I could see him empathizing with Henry and relating to him in more than one way. I think there’d be some unsaid mutual respect between them, but I can’t really see that developing into a friendship.)
but Victor, obviously, cannot stand Eddie.
Henry, I think, would hate Victor at first. maybe Victor even reminded him of Brenner at first, before he got to know him, if he got to know him. and when — if — he knows Victor’s not like Brenner, I can kind of see him stopping trying to actively kill him? but I don’t see a genuine friendship between these two. mutual respect and secret admiration? yes. but not friendship.
on the other hand, I do think Reed and Eddie would get along. Eddie would happily listen to Reed talk about science all day and he’d ask him questions, and Reed would be more than happy to answer him. it’s been a while since someone’s this interested in Reed’s interests without calling him a nerd and bullying him for it, so Reed’s very happy to have Eddie around. and also, Eddie can relate to Reed since they were both bullied, another reason why I think they’d be best friends.
Eddie would tease him about Victor, and when Reed was all blushing, Eddie would just say, “nah it’s cool, my boyfriend’s a psychopath too. see? another thing we both have in common!”
Reed can’t really understand why Eddie’s even with someone like Henry, but he supposes he’s not in the position to make any comments about Eddie’s taste in men when he’s with Victor.

"Naming of Parts" - a parody version.
I posted the original poem a couple of days ago, along with a link to it being read aloud, in part by poet Henry Reed himself.
The website where I found the reading has a section on parodies of Reed's poems, mostly variants of "Naming...", and this one fits in particularly well with Foodie Sunday posts.
I don't know anything about E. V. Milner - who has almost no internet presence - or even when the poem was written, though they seem to have been active in the 1960s.
I have a feeling, from various little clues, that the TV cook who "warms to her theme with ardent, unflagging exuberance" is a restrained (non-libellous) version of Fanny Cradock, a name most US readers and UK ones under A Certain Age probably won't recognise.
Those who do might draw in a sharp breath between their teeth, because her notorious mistreatment of subordinates, i.e. anyone not her, led to the abrupt collapse of her career and an article some years ago calling her "Gordon Ramsay in a frock". :-P
This article might help, and of course there's a Wikipedia entry.
On with the poem!
Baking of Tarts by E.V. Milner
Today we have Baking of Tarts. Yesterday We had Simple Salads. And a fortnight tomorrow We shall have How to Garnish Cod Cutlets. But today Today we have Baking of Tarts. The viewers Ogle their screens in a flurry of breathless excitement, For today we have Baking of Tarts. This is the plastic mixing bowl. And this Is the rolling-pin and the board, whose use you will see In a moment. And this is the transparent oven Which in your case you have not got. The speaker Warms to her theme with ardent, unflagging exuberance, Which in our case we have not got. This is the strawberry jam which is neatly extracted With a gentle thrust of the spoon. And please do not let me See anyone licking his fingers. It is perfectly easy If you have any jam in your pot. The viewers Are silent and motionless, never letting anyone see Any of them licking their fingers. And this you can see is the lard. The purpose of this Is to prevent the pastry from sticking. We can smear it Rapidly backwards and forwards: we call this Greasing the tin. And rapidly backwards and forwards The viewers are fumbling for biscuits and spilling their coffee: They call it ruining the carpet. They call it ruining the carpet. It is perfectly easy If your mind is attempting to cope with the cookery expert While your hands are engaged in juggling with saucers and plates And trying meanwhile to secure a reasonable share Of the cheese straws, which in our case we have not got: For today we have Baking of Tarts.
