Monday, January 28: Hellanbach, “Dancin’“

Now Hear This came out 3 years after Hellanbach’s debut EP, which was long enough for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal to have crested and begun its decline.  And to that point, the band’s first full-length reflected the fragmenting of their scene, as tunes like “Dancin’” showed a clear Van Halen influence even as it retained the rough-hewn spirit of the NWOBHM.  Jimmy Brash wasn’t exactly a British Diamond Dave, but the song had a lighthearted sound and feel that, for all of the enthusiasm associated with the same, didn’t always shine through in the music itself.  To be sure, “Dancin’” wasn’t as insouciant as Hellanbach likely thought, and the chugging guitars in the verses were NWOBHM to the bone, although Steve Walker did a relatively decent Alex Van Halen impression.  None of this pointed to a bright future for the band, but the song was a low-key charmer befitting its era.

NWOBHM band formed 1979 in Newcastle, England and disbanded in 1985. Somewhere in between Diamonhead and Van Halen, this band demonstrates the continuity of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock styles in the NWOBHM era. Tyneside, England's Hellanbach were often touted as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal's answer to Van Halen. Thanks in large part to their crowd-pleasing party attitude and upbeat hard rock tunes, constant gigging all over the Northeast of England made Hellanbach a popular attraction on the scene. A tune like this should have come out of the psychedelic 60′s, or possibly the acid-laced 70′s, but surprisingly HELLANBACH’s cover came out on 1983′s outing NOW HEAR THIS.  Only the sudden heavy metal bridge at 2 1/2 minutes in gives a time stamp, but it’s a perfectly forgivable one because of how hardcore it is.

Hellanbach was only ever a second tier arena rock, thrash metal band at best, often being likened to a poor man’s Van Halen.  However, this song does what a great cover song should do, taking the source material from 1970′s The Aristocats, and breathing in their style and tone, while remaining true to the song’s spirit.  That takes talent, and maybe Hellanbach deserve a reappraisal.
