A ‘hn’ was the Genin’s response, grey hues very nearly rolling at his Mentor’s chosen adjective—unable (and unwilling) to consider what he knew an important heirloom to be and that hissing, clawing lump—as quite the same thing. Piranha-bait maybe, a hairy foot-matt; most definitely. Rocking forward within his seat, Kakashi reached for one of the paper towels that lay discarded between them, finally unable to ignore his sticky palms any longer.
He rubbed at each of his fingers diligently, still considering the Jōnin’s words, whilst dragging his gaze over the Izakaya patrons without lingering on just one table for too long. Though there was one table decked out in pickled foods that he had yet to see and/or come across in Konoha, the scent of Shōchū permeating from the colourful, opened jars.
“That can’t be right, Sensei….”
Kakashi eventually dragged his curious gaze from the glass cruses, paper towel crinkled within his old. “If Daiymo-sama really had Tora-chan since they conquered the continent, he would be over a hundred years old…”
A pause before his tone took on a haughty quality. “Cats don’t really have nine lives, you know. That’s just a myth.”
@minaa-munch
@konohagakurekakashi
Kakashi’s sticky finger pads twitched from their place wedged underneath his folded legs, his lips thinning, but most of the ire leaving his gaze at what he has come to know as the blonde’s ‘Teacher voice’. It was a low, easy timbre the Jōnin always tapped into when he explained the trickier aspects of a Mission, pointed out how they could improve their Katō stances or when he needed to reclaim the attentions of his bickering subordinates. Kakashi often lamented how the different variables in his sensei’s pitch could classify as an S-ranked Jutsu on their own, but never cared to voice these thoughts aloud, even though he thought the other members of Team Minato would readily agree.
The Hatake shifted within his seat, eyebrows smoothing back into what he hoped to be something akin to his regular po-faced expression.
“Hai sensei….It’s Shinobi Rule number twenty nine.”
Even though it was one of the most known rubrics and Kakashi prided himself in adhering to all prescribed rules religiously, he really hoped that the Jōnin would reconsider and forgo all thoughts on more D-ranks. He nodded his head at the offer of sweet potatoes however, seeing as it was the one sweet snack that he found he didn’t mind, afore he ventured forward cautiously, like he was still wrapping his mind around the idea that chasing after over-fed cats was important.
“So…then…finding Tora-chan, improves relations with the Daimyō and his family?”
Cue a noncommittal hum in acknowledgment just as a dull voice echoed from somewhere on the left. It didn’t take long for the Namikaze to list off their order to a disgruntled waiter; a tired looking teenager with hues dull enough to rival Kakashi’s.
Yare ne. kids these days.
“It does. Tora chan is an important heirloom for the Daimyo’s family, ne.” He replied seriously, blue hues momentarily flickering to dark counterparts before shifting to a suspicious looking stain on the dull wood. The table was still as filthy as ever, despite the waiter’s valiant [read: pitiful] attempts at cleaning it earlier, its sole saving grace encapsulated by the lone tea tray of paper towels that had been left in the middle.
“Tora chan has been a part of the ruling elite since they conquered the continent.”
It wasn’t a complete lie, seeing as how the cat in question happened to be practically immortal. Honestly though, if the little Hatake prodigy believed that…well. The thought coaxed a mischievous grin from his usual, sunny disposition; the blond angling his head to the side so his naive little kouhai couldn’t see it.
Oh the fun he could have.

The Mom Problem
I've always thought Shino was a half-orphan.
Shibi comes off as a bit of a helicopter parent. Shino is always under his wing, and he's always got his insects with him making sure he's safe. He's calm and reassuring. Protecting but also nurturing. He's looking out for him much more closely than any other shinobi parent. And he has less reason to than any of them. Shino is very capable.
He's playing both Dad and Mom for Shino. He's a very traditional man, even a bit of a sulky bitch at times, but he puts that aside to be what Shino needs him to be. What he's not getting from a mother.
It doesn't help that he lost Torune. He only has one son left. That's his baby. He can't help but worry.
It's sweet, but it has a serious negative impact on Shino. He has all the confidence in the world in his clan's jutsu. But in himself? None. He falls apart when he fails. He's nothing. He's unworthy. Shibi's concern only makes Shino feel like he can't be trusted to do things on his own.
But Shino doesn't resent him. Even as an adult, at the point when many people start griping with their parents' ridiculous affairs he considers his family so close that other people couldn't understand. And this too is sweet, but it probably speaks to some unhealthy enmeshment.
Personal headcanon: Shino's mother was one of many Aburame who were overwhelmed by Kurama's chakra and died during the Nine-Tails Attack. He would have been ten months old at the time.
We see that as a younger man, Shibi was just as handsome as Shino and extremely detached. I like to think on top of everything else he's trying to atone for being a terrible husband and never apologizing to Shino's mother before her death. An adulterer even-- after all, you can't have a bad reputation if you have no reputation.

I love my dad. My dad's awesome.#I have additional rambles to post later about how Shino's behavior doesn't seem in line with Shibi's current parenting#which i have attributed to Shibi perhaps not always being the man he is now#that will probably come with a tw

Parenting Rock Lee with Might Guy :)
Note:@xemaliahrssx here ya go! I hope it tastes just like you dreamed it would!
Sitting at the kitchen table, watching Guy and Lee devour the dinner you made, had you feeling nostalgic... You watched with your head rested on your hand. It was the little family moments that you appreciated more than anything else these days. "Yeah! and then I caught him in a cross block!" Lee said, describing their latest mission, his mouth full of food.
"Haha yes yes (y/n) you should have been there, our Rock Lee is becoming a real force to be reckoned with, much like his handsome sensei" Guy said with a wink in your direction.
"Handsome indeed" you said with a grin.
Thinking back to the days when you were a little more of a workaholic made you laugh. If you told your younger-self all those years ago that you would be Konoha's worst helicopter parent in just a few years, you'd have never believed it. Guy was a perfect match for you in that regard. You two were a well oiled machine when it came to parenting.
While Lee could do no wrong in your eyes, Guy was a bit heavy handed in his discipline of Lee's skills as a shinobi. You kissed every bruise and scrape, while Guy was teaching him how to prevent them in the first place.
Rock Lee has had more than his fair share of the short-end-of-the- shit-stick his entire life. BUT One could be forgiven for not recognizing the true level of hardship the boy has overcome in his short tenure as a shinobi. Lee is a true underdog.
Lucky for him, you've always been a bit of a sucker for an underdog.
You thought back to those early days......
Even before Lee evolved to a mini version of your childhood crush, you felt the need to protect him. Watching him fumble and practice jutsu in vain day after day.....early in the morning and into the night. You would watch him from a distance while training your own team. One early morning, you decided to check in on the boy with long black hair. He kicked at a post, counting off as you looked on...10....11.....12.....his kicks were weak even for his young age. As he got closer to 50 he fell back, overwhelmed by the pain of repetitively beating his shins into the wood without chakra to safeguard his bones.
Clearly angry at his situation, the thought occurred to you that maybe he wasn't using chakra because he couldn't....the boy had tears streaming from his eyes. It broke your heart to watch a kid who couldn't be more than 10, cursing his life.
"A kid working that hard shouldn't have to feel that defeated..." you said to yourself.
You felt conflicted. Torn between wanting to step in and takeover his training...but feeling the weight of responsibility that would come with encouraging a child to chase a pipedream that would only lead to disappointment. You knew all too well what happens to weak ninja. The reality was that it would be cruel to encourage the boy to peruse a life as dangerous as that of a shinobi. You were no slouch when it came to taijutsu but ninjas are able to compete with one another because of the advantages that come with developing kakai genki.
Could a boy with no use of chakra stand a chance against the generations of those families of ninja who use fearsome jutsu and tactics like lightning...wind....wood or even hereditary gifts like the dreaded sharingan or byakugen? The real answer was sad and harsh. No. He couldn't.
You wouldn't be so irresponsible as to tell the boy he could be anything but a failure.
If he perused that path, he would die young.
So you stood back, restraining the desire to comfort and nurture the little boy out of what you told yourself was mercy. Day after day, week after week....you watched on....until it became too much. You couldn't sleep anymore, couldn't function on missions the same way. Always thinking back to him still out at those training grounds.....always struggling.
....
One morning it was pouring rain. You called off training that day for your team and headed out to the place you knew he would be. He was there of course. He was doing his best to catch a cold while practicing hand signs to no avail. After watching him for a few minutes you finally asked, "What's your name kid?" speaking loud to project over the rain. Startled he looked up to where you stood, perched on a post a few feat away. "I...Im Rock Lee" he said timidly. You laughed at his shy but sweet face, "Im y/n" you said.
"Your kicks look like they could use some work", holding your palm about chest high, to show him where his blow should be landing. The boy grimaced...clearly angry with his lack of direction in training. You laughed and the both of you worked on his kicks for the duration of the morning.
"I think you'll be a splendid ninja someday" you said as you offered him a bit of lunch you packed. The boy looked up at you with the most heartbreaking fear in his eyes, "I can't use chakra" Lee said barley above a whisper, clearly ashamed to tell you the truth.
You ruffled his hair. "Look kid, life is shitty sometimes. But I can tell you are someone who will never quit. No matter the odds, and that is something worth more than all the talent in the world." He instantly smiled up at you, melting your heart for what would be the first of a million times. Laughing and showing you also first time you saw that shiny smile that you would come to love more that anything on earth.
From then on he was your responsibility. Your chest burned with pride in his concrete determination. Feeling instantly the protective burn and feral instinct to insulate him from anything that would hurt him.
....
It was about a year later when things evolved. You and Lee had become close. He, being an orphan as you found out he was, had taken your invitation to live in your spare bedroom. It wasn't long before you were nagging him to be sure and eat breakfast before class, take baths every night. You were often hearing your mothers voice echo in your own as you guided the child to a structure he lacked.
You even went to his parent meetings at the Academy, much to the surprise of Iruka (because he himself was 2 years older than you and had known you since you were smol) laughed when you asked to see Lee's reports.
----
Then one hot summer day you got the order... your team was dispatched on your first extended mission with your new genin. 3 months on a C rank mission to Suna. Your heart sank as you remembered Lee's graduation exam was in just a few days. Before you left, you kissed his forehead and promised a tearful Lee who had become just as attached as you over the last year, that would bring him back a graduation present.
You just knew he would finally pass.
....
Returning to the village near midnight you couldn't wait to see Lee. After giving report to Lord Third, you quickly made your way home. Quietly cracking the door to his bedroom, you peaked in to see his sweet little face. The snoring boy looked peaceful.
"He cut his hair?" you thought puzzled..."he must have done it himself, it looks a little odd." You laughed at the thought of him using a bowl to cut his hair.
Then your eyes traveled to the headband still around his forehead, "He passed!!!" you quietly celebrated, careful not to wake him up. You placed the promised gift on his dresser, a brand-new set of num-chuks you'd had made in Suna.
The next morning you were up before sunrise making a celebratory breakfast when an extreme round of knocking came from the apartment's front door.
You quickly answered, immediately flustered when on the other side was none other than Might Guy....the same Guy you'd had the hots for over a decade.
"Y/N!, I must have the wrong address! I was looking for one of my students!" Guy said in his familiar boisterous cadence. Laughing nervously you started to respond, when behind you Lee pushed his way through the doorframe. Your eyes widened at the sight.
The haircut made sense now, Lee stood side by side with his sensei. He was wearing Guy's jumpsuit... they could have been father and son.
Looking at the two of them standing side by side in front of you for the first time gave you the most jarring sense of dejavu.
"Guy sensei! Look what Y/N brought me from her most dangerous mission!" Lee brandished the weapon, beaming up at his teacher who laughed and winked in your direction. "Ah, a great choice! Only the most skilled ninja know how to use such a fine weapon! We must enlighten you at once Lee my boy!" With that the handsome jonin and your sweet Rock Lee were off to train.
You had known Guy since he was still struggling to gain entrance to the Academy, you knew that the man who radiated confidence today, only earned that ability through blood, sweat, and tears.
You apprehensively accepted that Might Guy was a good match to be Lee's sensei.
"Be careful!" you called, more than a little apprehensive at the thought of your sweet baby boy training with such an admittedly impulsive man. Feeling a small tug of sadness as you watched the two of them disappear down the street.
"Lee's getting tall..." you though as you closed the door.
....
Over the next few years Lee had grown into a strong young man. You felt such extreme pride in everything he did. Even though you being in your mid-twenties were not nearly old enough to be Lee's mother, he had taken to occasionally calling you mom.
Lee was never embarrassed of you as he grew into a teen like some of the other kids his age. He was always just as willing to give you a hug before a mission as the day you met him.
It would be a lie to say that the relationship you and Guy shared hadn't also matured along the way. Although you weren't Lee's biological parents, anyone would be forgiven for thinking that you were. Everything you had admired about Guy, his hot-bloodedness, his devotion to youthful perseverance, his love of his village had been passed down to your surrogate son.
It was only natural that you and Guy would become a team in raising Rock Lee. Over time after a few years of dinners, training sessions, birthdays, holidays etc...Guy decided to propose to you.
It was a literal dream come true. You couldn't say yes fast enough. But as required when two shinobi become married, when you went to sign the paperwork to make your marriage official, requesting a stamp of approval from Lady Tsunade....she extended to you a folder with a second set of forms.
Guy beamed as you read the contents. Adoption papers with Lee's name printed at the top in bold.
"He will always be our son. Since we are making it official... why not add one more?" Guy said with a laugh. The tears began welling in your eyes. "He's 17" you laughed, "I love you" is all you could think to say in response to the most kind gesture you have ever witnessed.
Guy held his trademark thumbs up high as he replied, "Lee will always need his mom, no matter how big he gets!" His words like music to your heart...
You'd never felt so complete as you walked hand in hand with Guy, on your way home to surprise your sweet son with the news.
Upon telling Lee what the two of you had done, he looked from the papers back to you. Confusion spread across the sweet ravenette's features. "But I do not understand" Lee said with a hand rubbing the back of his neck. "Have you not always been my mom?"
The innocent look in his eye and profound sincerity in his voice made tears well in your eyes for what felt like the tenth time that day. You laughed and swept he and Guy into a hug that didn't last long enough. "What's for dinner?" the two men asked in unison and in that moment you knew you were the luckiest person in the world.

Too Close (1/?)
IDK what to rate this for now. I’ve always had this weird idea in my head about what would happen if enemy ninjas knew Sakura was pregnant with the next Uchiha heir. I’ve always pictured it in my head, so I decided to try and put it into words. I hope you guys like it.
“We don’t have to go,” Sasuke shifted through their closest slowly looking for his old kimono. “ ,Yes we do. We already said we would,” Sakura scoffed as she finished the bow on her yukata. Tonight was the spring festival in Konoha and Sakura was in dire need to get out of their apartment. For the last eight weeks she had been on bedrest awaiting the final stages of her pregnancy and she was three weeks away from the baby’s birth date.
“ You really think you should be out in this state?” Sakura rolled her eyes at her husband and bumped him lightly out of the way of their closet. Sasuke had been dragging his feet all day about tonight’s festival, of course they could stay in and enjoy the warmth of their home, but Sakura couldn’t take it anymore, she was ready to be out and see her friends, along with giving Sasuke some much needed space from her swollen belly. She thought she would be the helicopter parent, but so far the papa to be would cling to her everywhere she went.
“ Here, it was right behind your coat.”
“ Thank you.” Sasuke shifted into putting on the kimono with the help of his wife. “I promise we won’t stay long. Maybe you could hang out with the guys after. You won’t be so free once the baby is born. ”
“Hn.”
“I mean it, let’s have some fun tonight. Promise me you’ll try,” Sakura pulled tightly on his knotted strings and looked into Sasuke’s face awaiting his answer. Kissing her gently, Sasuke smirked, “I’ll try.”
Hand in hand, the couple entered the crowded festival and searched for their friends. “ Over there Anata, I see Hinata’s hair,” Sakura pulled on Sasuke’s hand as she hurried into the crowd. Carefully, Sasuke yanked her back, protecting her from the people around them.
Exasperated, Sakura pulled his hand again, “C’mon.”
“Sakura- chan, Sasuke, you made it,” Naruto shouted slapping a hand on Sasuke’s shoulder.
“ I’m glad you guys came,” Hinata smiled as she waved to greet them both. “ Who’s watching Boruto-kun?” Sakura questioned. Out of the rookie nine, Hinata was the first to get pregnant and had already given birth to a son. He was the spitting image of Naruto and Sakura prayed the boy would smart like Hinata.
“My father wanted to watch him, so we took him there. How are you doing?”
“ Urgh, I’m ready to burst, this little guy keeps sitting on my bladder and then when he hears his papa, he won’t stop kicking,” Sakura joked as she rubbed her belly and leaned back into Sasuke’s chest. Sakura looked up to see the unamused face of her husband. She grinned in turn.
“ So its a boy?” Naruto asked.
“We don’t know, we wanted to wait and see. But I think it’s a boy,” Sakura stated smiling. “ We don’t care either way.”
“ Hey Sakura! Look who made it outside!” Sakura turned to the shouting in the distance to see Ino and Sai walking toward them, along with Shikamaru and Temari close behind.
“Hi Ino,” Sakura replied,” No Inojin?” Sakura looked around for Ino’s child. He was the most recent birth and Ino refused to be parted with him for even a second.
“This one convinced me to leave him with my mother,” Ino poked Sai’s side, who looked down at her and smiled,”I was beginning to wonder if you loved our baby more than me. Surely, you will be fine for one night.” Ino nodded in turn, gripping his hand.
“ Of course, we just won’t stay here too long.” Sai internally sighed.
“ Honestly, I don’t see what all the fuss is about, being pregnant isn’t so bad,” Temari commented. She was just entering her third trimester and so far pregnancy hadn’t changed her.
“ So are we going to walk around this place or not?”
“So troublesome,” Shikamaru commented as Temari punched his arm, “C’mon, I want some food.”
With that the gang ventured through the festival playing games and stopping at food booths. Finally, they group gathered in a clearing a little ways from the festival, finding a place to watch the fireworks. Sakura position herself on the bench and looked up to see the stars. As Sasuke began to sat down to join her, she stopped. “Anata, I’m actually kind of hungry.”
“Again?” Sakura nodded, “ Can you get me some Takoyaki with ice cream?” Sasuke’s face went green but he nodded. Beside Sakura, Hinata also called to Naruto, “ Do you think you could get me some ice cream too?”
“ Uh sure, Hinata, of course,” Naruto followed suit of Sasuke. One by one the remaining girls asked their husbands to get them more food, confused Shikamaru and Sai joined Naruto and Sasuke back to the festival.
“ Honestly, I thought they would never leave,” Sakura sighed as she relaxed further onto the bench. “If I have to hear Sai claim I love the baby more than him, I am going to punch.”
“Shikamaru keeps complaining everytime I ask him to do one small thing. I’m sorry but who is carrying his child again, me that’s who.” The girls stopped and looked over at Hinata who blushed. Honestly, Naruto had been good to her since the birth of Boruto. He was kind, caring, and came to her whenever she wanted.
“Well, Naruto still can’t change a diaper correctly,” Hinata tried and even then it sounded fake.
“Everytime Sasuke speaks or lets go from holding me this baby kicks, urgh, what I wouldn’t give to have my body be at peace.”
“I’m just glad he let you come outside. He’s been hovering over you all night,” Ino added shaking her head.
“We need a night off,” Temari sighed.
“ And the guys need a night out,” Ino replied.
“Ladies, you know what I’m thinking?” Temari, Hinata, and Ino looked at Sakura curiously as she told them of her plan.
The men returned right as the fireworks was starting and together the couples enjoyed the festival watch the sky burst into colorful flames. Sakura yawned and leaned closer to Sasuke as they watched the explosives. “ You ready to head home?” He whisper in her ear. “Not quite,” she sighed and held his hand in hers, glancing around in the crowd. Once the fireworks ended and the crowd cheered a boisterous voice broke through the crowd. “ Oi Naruto, Hinata!” in walked Kiba, Shino, and Lee. “ You guys enjoying the festival?”
“Kiba, where have you been?”
“Enjoying my own date of the night!” Kiba smirked.
“With who Shino and Lee? Interesting,” Naruto concluded which earned him a slap across his head.
“ No, you Oaf, I was with a girl, but she went home already. I ran into these guys and you all when we were trying to leave.”
“ Oh.”
“ So you guys going to the after party?” Kiba grinned. “ After party?” Sakura asked. “ Yeah at Ichiraku’s apparently it’s guys night, what do you say?” The girls grinned at one another and looked towards the men. “Sure,” Temari shrugged.
“ Who wouldn’t want to be around a bunch of hot guys all night.”
“ Ino,” Sai gasped. Ino grinned. “ I’m kidding. I think you and the guys should go though.”
“ Yeah, when was the last time you guys got to hang out all together. And being on a mission together doesn’t count.” Sakura stated as she looked between Naruto and Sasuke.
“ I thought you were tired,” Sasuke asked.
“ I am, but you guys need to have fun. Once the baby is born, who knows when you will all get to be together,” at that Sakura yawned and Sasuke wrapped an arm around her waist protectively.
“ I’m fine, and I think you all should go.” Sakura looked at all the men and smirk, “ Guys night.” Naruto turned to Hinata, “You ok with this?” Hinata nodded, “I’ll stay at my Dad’s tonight, just be safe ok.” Hinata pecked Naruto’s cheek and smiled at him. Flushed he replied, “ Ok.”
“I’m still walking you home.” Sasuke stated and Sakura didn’t argue.
In the bushes away from the group of couples, two ex-sound ninjas released their hearing jutsus.
“ Looks like the Uchiha’s wife will be unattended tonight,” one commented.
“ And perfect timing too, just when the master has finally perfected her jutsu.” In a flash, the ninjas poofed into dust and disappeared into the night.
“Mmmhm, promise me you’ll have a good time ok,” Sakura shimmied out of her Yukata and pulled on one of Sasuke’s worn shirts from the drawer.
“Sakura,” Sasuke warned, she was starting to get on his nerves. He didn’t like leaving her alone and the fact the she was practically kicking him out was starting to annoy him.
“ What I just want you to have fun?” Sakura smiled innocently.
“ What is this about? Do you really not want me around?” Sasuke muttered. Maybe her pregnancy hormones were finally being passed onto him Sasuke thought, but continued to glare down at his wife, who laid across their bed.
“ I just-,” Sasuke raised him eyebrow in caution of what she would say next.
“Ok fine. Everytime you get near me, the baby starts kicking. Its like he wants to be in your belly and not mine. And he won’t stop unless you hold onto me or he doesn’t sense you for a while. That’s why I would just like to go to bed early without a kicking tantrum, ok...Sorry,” Sakura blushed and covered her head with the pillow embarrassed that even before birth, the baby loved Sasuke more than her.
“ Sakura,” Sasuke called stepping closer to her side of the bed.
“ Shhhh!,” Sakura put a finger to Sasuke’s lips and peaked from under the pillow, “ the baby will hear you.” Sasuke rolled his eyes and instead firmly moved the pillow away from Sakura’s face.
“ What are yo-” Sasuke placed his lips over Sakura’s, teasing her into a calming state. Sakura slowly ran her hands through his dark locks, keeping Sasuke in place. Sasuke in turn rain his hand down Sakura’s face down her neck and slowly toward her chest, when stopped and pulled back from her.
“ Wouldn’t want to rouse the baby?” Sasuke soothed. Sakura smiled tiredly and nodded, “ No, we wouldn’t. He’s still safely asleep.” Sasuke took a step back from her, fighting the urge to rub soothing circles over his wife’s belly.
“ Be safe ok,” Sakura cooed, her eyelids drooping heavily.
“ Call me if you need me,” Sasuke replied leaning back in to kiss her gently before heading out to a bar.
Once Sasuke disappeared into the shadows, the apartment fell silent and the only breath that was heard was the soft sounds of Sakura breathing. Along the outer windows of the apartment the rogue nins cut through the glass and quietly walked into the master bedroom. A light snored was heard from the pregnant pink woman, but she never stirred. One of the rogue nin was a spinly man who quietly made quick and fast hand signs, concentrating his chakra on his upcoming attack. When the last hand sign was made, Sakura opened her eyes sensing the faint chakra presence as more than a mere dream.

Naruto Shinden - characters and prologue
Hiya guys, my novels finally arrived.
As some of you pointed out, there are already translations of Shikamaru Shinden (by the awesome @shadlay) and Sasuke Shinden (by the gorgeous OrganicDinosaur).
Of Naruto Shinden, on the other hand, I could only find excerpts, so I'm gonna pick up the translation myself.
Same rules as before: don't copy, don't repost. I'll keep the translation online just for a short while, but if you miss some parts I'll send them privately. Aaaand: support the official release (it's important).
(One last thing: I'm translating as fast as I can, but I probably won't be able to complete the novel before leaving for a two-week trip where I won't be able to translate, so I can't fix a schedule of posting or whatever).

Prologue
«Parent and Child Day?»
The voice of the Seventh Hokage, Uzumaki Naruto, resounded in the Hokage’s office, which was a mess of scrolls and half-opened cardboard boxes.
He placed the document he had read out loud on the desk with a thud, and raised his head. On the direction he had turned his bewildered eyes to, there was the figure of the man who worked as the Hokage’s counsellor — Nara Shikamaru.
«Yeah. Name the new holiday. That’s a request from our colleagues of the new town.»
Even if he had heard Shikamaru’s additional explanation, Naruto repeated his question, without understanding.
«A name for the holiday… what does it mean dattebayo?»
«Come on. It’s like the way of calling a festival. In the first place, the nuance of ‘holiday’ varies from those guys and us.»
«Hmm…»
With a vague reply, Naruto gazed at the door of the Hokage’s office.
As if he was staring at the towering Hokage Rock in that direction, and the new town that spread beyond that.
More than a decade before, the Village Hidden in the Leaves had literally turned into an empty wasteland because of Pain’s attack, the first one to be done in the Fourth Shinobi World War. A vast land hollowed out, with houses squashed flat. The village had been thoroughly blown up from the basis.
However, there was also something that had remained without having been wiped out. It was the Hokage Rock.
Where there was the Hokage Rock, there was Konoha. It was unthinkable for the villagers to revive Konoha in a new plot of land, turning their back to the successive generations of Hokage that had been watching over them for long years.
They would surely revive it again in that very place!
This feeling was connected with the reconstruction of the village, and its miraculous growth.
The general stores that had kept running their business since the foundation of the village changed into around-the-clock, jack-of-all-trades stores, and they never lowered their doorway curtains to close.
Inside and outside the village steel rails had been laid out, and long and narrow iron cars called Thunder Cars had began running above them. Also the cultural exchange with the other villages, which needed several days in order to keep in touch, had become much easier thanks to that.
High buildings had been made one after the other behind the Hokage Rock, and from the huge monitors installed on their walls the news not only of the Land of Fire, but of every country as well, were transmitted. “Something like buildings looking down to the Hokage Rock is execrable” — that’s how the elders of the Honourable Council had opposed it, but the convenience was hard to be cast aside, and also their voices had gradually become quieter.
The large apartments that were to be used as the residence of several hundreds of people called even more immigrants into the village, and nowadays it could be said that the population of the village consisted of more people that weren’t shinobi rather than the other way around. It was an epoch in which even in the Academy Naruto had attended the ninjutsu courses did not reach their quota, and they were forced to establish some general courses. Even that could be called a proof that they were at peace though.
Now the Village Hidden in the Leaves had stopped hiding, and had become one of the metropolises of the Land of Fire.
Naruto and the others called the surface where the skyscrapers were standing in a row ‘new town’.
Of course, they just named it like that for convenience, there was no qualitative difference such as new and old in Konoha. Even if most of the people who lived in the new town weren’t shinobi, all the villagers were like a family for Naruto.
Although one difference between the shinobi and those who weren’t shinobi appeared in their cycle of life, after all.
That only thing was free time.
The shinobi world was instable, and yet absurd. It’s not that their time of duty was set, and it was hard to have a particular day-off. Because of that, days-off became “the days when casually there’s not a mission” for shinobi. There were few shinobi that looked forward to holidays they didn’t even know when they’d arrive.
However, for those who weren’t shinobi holidays were “days of relaxation that arrive at fixed intervals”. They had demanded to add a day-off once a week, and if some memorial days wouldn’t become holidays. Also the matter of this time was related to that.
«Well, turning red a date of the calendar by itself is sad.»
Naruto fetched the Hokage seal, «The name doesn’t matter, right? There’s no reason to oppose it ‘ttebayo.» and applied the seal on the document in his hands with a plop.
«It’s decided.»
The document was promptly tossed into the “approved box” by Shikamaru’s hand.
Thus, the holiday “Parent and Child Day” was created in the Village Hidden in the Leaves.
«…however, the Parent and Child Day… what kind of day is it, exactly?»
«According to the written application, apparently it’s a day in which you deepen your parent-child bond. The title is not very much, but essentially it means that parents and children have fun together while going shopping or in a trip and so forth.»
«Parent-child bond… huh?»
A shadow fell on Naruto’s expression. The thing that was on his mind were his two children. Boruto and Himawari. He wondered when the heck he’d finally spend some father-children time with them.
«Well, what if we do some family support service as well?»
Maybe because he had guessed that, Shikamaru’s voice turned intentionally cheerful.
«Take it easy at home once in a while. At any rate, even if you go back home you’ll just sleep, and you can’t talk enough with your brats, right? ‘Cause I’ll also help to arrange the schedule.»
«Shikamaru… Hehe, thank you.»
Naruto and Shikamaru exchanged a bright smile, but their two gazes slowly lowered to the floor.
There, a mountain of documents had fallen from the desk, and had scattered so much that it could be mistaken for the pattern of the floor.
«…we’ll arrange it, you know?»
There was something empty mixed in Shikamaru’s voice.
«Yeah.»
Naruto’s reply was strong.
«The Parent and Child Day… isn’t it nice. I’ll absolutely go back home ‘ttebayo!»
That's all, for the time being.
...okay, that's not all. To be honest, I've translated chapter 1 already. BUT! It needs a heavy revision, so I can't post it yet.
And I'll tell you the truth (long live honesty): I hate the way Mirei Miyamoto writes. So, this translation may contain some mistakes (that is, more than usual), but I'll eventually tell you when and where my translation is uncertain.
