Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Butterflies are important pollinators, but due to their straw-like mouths most of them feed are restricted to a liquid diet of nectar (among other things). One of the few exceptions are zebra longwing butterflies, which don't just transport pollen-- they feed on it! Pollen is rich in protein, which allows this species to live as adults for several months; a rare feat for butterflies.

Tumblr media
Heliconius charithonia or the Zebra Longwing. shes just stripey. apparently she can be found on central and south america, texas and california, and some other american states when they migrate in warmer months, yay! they are social butterflies and fly around and sleep together at night in groups of up to 60 butterflies!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
their caterpillars are scary because they have spikes to protect them from predators, but are harmless for humans to touch. due to eating toxic plants, both the caterpillars and adult butterflies are poisonous to eat
Tumblr media
Aglais io, or the European Peacock. scariest eye pattern wings ive seen in a while.

Zebra longwing (Heliconius charithonia)
The zebra longwing is Florida’s national butterfly and just look at this beautiful butterfly!! Not only is is it absolutely beautiful but it’s also fascinating as well. They live an unusually long life and can live up to 6 months. The Zebra Longwing is the only known butterfly to establish colonies(fricking amazing!) It is also found to rest on the tips of plants, they return to the same resting spot every night. It sleeps so soundly that it is possible to pick it off its perch and return it later to the same spot and it is the sweetest thing . It is one of the only butterflies that feed off nectar and pollen and there life span with decrease if deprived.

I had a dream about a cryptid: mothwings.
They’re sort of a mothman-like figure, but instead of moth wings they have those of a zebra longwing (Heliconius charithonia). The people who saw them first erroneously identified the wings as belonging to a moth, so they call them mothwings.
Mothwings are only seen in the forest surrounding a particular preschool, Fort Mathal Pre-K. The teachers at the school are familiar with the stories surrounding them.
They say, sometimes you can see one during the day, watching from the large Norway maple whose branches hang over the playground.
Some teachers say mothwings don’t exist. They’re just misidentified birds and shadows according to this theory.
Some teachers say they are a previously unrecorded animal, perhaps driven to near extinction by habitat destruction.
Some very morbid teachers say that they are the ghosts of the children who died when the preschool caught fire many years ago. The purporters of this theory were thoroughly admonished by the most of the parents whose children passed away.
Other people say that they’re guardian angels. Or aliens. Or demons. Or fairies. Or escaped government experiments.
But most people don’t think they exist at all.

The Next Generation is on it’s Way
Deposit This pretty little zebra longwing butterfly (Heliconius charithonia) was very busy laying her eggs on various passion fruit vines. She would flit around from vine to vine, find a spot she liked, and then pose in this odd position to lay the egg. Once finished, she’d head on to another vine. If you look closely, you can actually see the small yellow egg on the newly emerging plant leaf…
