Dread by the Decade: Dracula's Daughter
👻 You can support me on Ko-Fi! ❤️
Tumblr media
★★★
Plot: After her father's death, Dracula's daughter seeks to undo her vampiric curse and rejoin society.
Review: Though there are issues with the story and pacing, an interesting early portrayal of a conflicted vampire and queer subtext make this worth a watch.
Tumblr media
Source Material: "Carmilla" by Sheridan Le Fanu Sequel to: Dracula (1931) Year: 1936 Genre: Vampires, Gothic Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 1 hour 9 minutes
Tumblr media
Director: Lambert Hillyer Writer: Garrett Fort Cinematographer: George Robinson Editor: Milton Carruth Composer: Heinz Roemheld Cast: Gloria Holden, Otto Kruger, Marguerite Churchill, Edward Van Sloan, Irving Pichel, Gilbert Emergy
Tumblr media
------
Story: 2.5/5 - Messy. Its recapping is awkward and climax rushed. It also devotes too much time to inessential comedic relief. Still, Marya is a tragic character, and Jeffrey and Janet's relationship is fun.
Performances: 3.5/5 - Holden, echoing some of Lugosi's mannerisms, is the standout as a vampire combating loneliness. Also, Kruger and Churchill play off each other well.
Cinematography: 3.5/5 - Not as gothic and distinct as its predecessor, but still features some striking shots.
Tumblr media
Editing: 3/5 - A few really good uses of dissolves.
Music: 2.5/5 - Generic.
Sets: 3/5 - Proficiently dressed and realistic if a bit generic.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 3/5

Trigger Warnings:
Mild violence

Fun fact: public swimming pools became much more common and accessible in the US in the 1920s and 1930s, especially at places like the YMCA, so urban American kids (at least white ones--goddamn segregation) were more likely to know how to swim in this era than their parents had been at the same age.
In Europe, however, the development of swimming education seems to have been more piecemeal, with some areas taking it up more enthusiastically than others, so it's entirely possible that Heinz Kruger didn't learn to swim as a child. Thus, throwing that kid into the water wasn't just a few seconds' worth of distraction; it could have been a half-assed murder attempt, hilariously foiled by the fact that this was New York and kids learned to swim at the Y so they wouldn't drown at Coney Island.

love how Heinz Kruger in the new Disney+ Marvel series What If:
a) doesn't speak & dies immediately so they didn't have to either re-hire Richard Armitage to do a couple of VO lines or re-cast the character
b) really does look strikingly like RA from the side-profile shots (they really studied his distinct profile for the 1 second side-shot we get). I was very impressed by this. well done, animators
c) looks absolutely nothing like RA whenever Heinz is facing the camera straight on or when we get close ups. I know this isn't a good screenshot, but I literally had to double check for a hot second while watching that the character was supposed to be Heinz because of how off the close-ups looked from RA's actual face. obviously an animated recreation ain't gonna be perfect (especially for a minor character) but I just don't understand how they got his side profile perfect then decided it was too hard to make his actual face even vaguely resemble RA

How long was HFY Rebecca in a relationship with Heinz Kruger for? Was he abusive from the start or only later? Was he more verbally or physically abusive to her? What was one of the worst incidents during their relationship
Rebecca was in a relationship with him for a little over a year.
In the beginning, he would snap at her, tell her to “shut up” or “fuck off.” It was just words at first. Rebecca brushed them off, thinking he was just in a bad mood or that she had done something to deserve such a reaction.
But then the hitting started. He would shove her if she didn’t look at him as he talked to her. He would slap her when she defended herself or mouthed off to him.
And when he drank, it got even worse.
There are too many instances to pick out just one.
Rebecca never went to the hospital. She knew it would bring too many questions. Even worse, she knew her brother would find out. The Howlies knew too many people and had too many friends that worked in the hospital.
It was a terrible situation. But Rebecca felt trapped. She knew if she told anyone, Bucky or the Howlies would find out.
She was scared of Hank, but she was even more scared of what would happen to him if Bucky found out.
But thinks got worse and worse. She started having to miss work. She’d call her team and ask them to handle catering events without her. One day, she didn’t come into her office for the whole week, claiming to be sick.
Bucky just so happened to call the office to ask Rebecca to come over for dinner and hang out. He felt like he hadn’t seen her in forever.
When her assistant told him she’d called in sick all week, something didn’t feel right to Bucky.
He started calling her friends. They were saying that they hadn’t seen her in months, that she had just started ignoring their phone calls and texts.
Then Bucky called his mom and she said the same thing.
It didn’t take long for him to put together what was most likely happening.
He had Nat get Hank’s address.
Steve, Thor, Sam, and Nat all went with him.

Before Bucky could even pound on the door, he swore he could hear crying and yelling.
“Becca! Becca, it’s me! Open the door!”
There was no answer.
He turned to look at his friends.
“Step aside,” Thor warned him.
Bucky did as he was told and watched as Thor shouldered the door open, breaking it off of one of its hinges.
But nothing could’ve prepared Bucky for what he was about to see.
They walked into the living room to find Hank standing over Rebecca. His hands were clenched into fists and he was heaving.
Rebecca was curled up in a ball, her knees being hugged to her chest. She was shaking, absolutely petrified. Her nose was gushing blood from both nostrils. Her lip was split. There were bruises all across the skin of her neck. There was mascara and eyeliner smudge all below her eyes from her crying.
Hank turned at their entrance. “Who the fuck do you think you are?”
Bucky saw red.
He didn’t remember what he said. He didn’t remember lunging at Hank. He didn’t remember all the punches he threw to Hank’s face.
It was all a blur.
Bucky just remembered Steve holding Rebecca back as she screamed – no, as she begged him to stop.
“You’re gonna kill him!” She whimpered.
Hearing her desperate cries finally snapped Bucky out of it.
When he looked up, Sam, Thor, and Nat were standing by as if they were ready to rip him away.
Bucky calmed down his breathing. Then he slowly looked down to see the damage he’d done. He couldn’t even see Hank’s face clearly through all the blood and swelling.
He’d beaten him to a pulp.
“James, p-p-please,” Rebecca cried.
Then she turned and buried her face into Steve’s chest. He wrapped his arms around her immediately. She thought she was about to see her brother murder her boyfriend and she didn’t want to see it.
“Buck, let’s just go,” Steve told him gently.
It took every once of power inside Bucky to get up and not finish the job.
“You ever even so much as contact my sister again, and you won’t be so lucky.” Bucky whispered.
Hank didn’t react. He was just trying to breath and stay alive.
Bucky didn’t like his lack of response. He grabbed Hank’s face and closed the space between them.
“Do you hear me?” Bucky growled.
Still no response.
“Nod your head yes,” he warned.
Hank did as he said.
Bucky stood back up.
Steve had Rebecca in his arms now, cradled protectively to his chest. She was still crying, but her face was buried in Steve’s neck and her hair was blocking anyone from seeing her face.
Thor, Sam, and Nat were watching Bucky with expressions he didn’t have the mindset to process or even concern himself with.
Bucky ignored them all. “Let’s go.”
