What a Difference a Dey Makes.
Tumblr media
Helen Lisa O’Day had long suspected her husband Robert of dressing up in her clothes when she was away from home going to her job as a state wide substitute teacher, other than the pitting out of them sometimes she didn’t mind. She supposed it made him happy that was fine with her. She just wished he felt comfortable enough with himself to tell her.
Helen, however, figured that after she had gone to the remarkable shop owned by three women from India who sold clothing that somehow turned their western clients into Indian women.
So after taking their month-long `give it a try’ challenge Helen Lisa O’Day, a substitute teacher born in Salem, Massachusetts found herself changed into someone who could now only think of herself as Heera Leesha O’day of Salem, Tamil Nadu State, India, that it was the end of Robert’s cross-dressing, at least with her clothes.
Remarkably excepting of her fantastic transformation (helped by an embroidered pillow cover the sisters sold that "helps those not changed to accept those who have. ")  Robert was, however,  continuously going on about “how do you deal with all that...wrapping?” he would say, “you just have to practice,” Heera would reply.
Then Heera Leesha found a new occupation working for You Are What You Ware as a Precious metal jewelry designer making the type of gold and silver jewelry the newly minted Bhārata women coming out of the five shops now owned by the Sharma sisters seemed to all love.
Tumblr media
Her new job took her away from home even more now, just as it had for the last week with her returning late on a Friday; she did not think she would have to worry about any of her new clothing being pitted out due to Roberts's intimidation of “all that wrapping and draping.”
“Hello dear, I’m back,” said Heera, sure to use English as Robert spoke not a word of the Tamil she now spoke fluently, as well as her old English, though now flavored with a pronounced Tamil accent.
“Vaṇakkam” (hello) “Nāṉ oppukkoḷḷa vēṇṭum” (I have to confess) said a high-pitched woman’s voice in Tamil. That was when a petite young woman wearing one of her dresses presented herself. A woman whose face still bore a semblance to her husband Robert., if that is, he had been a woman born much further East than his original New Jersey.
“I can guess what that confession is,” said Heera thinking that at least now Robert would not be pitting out her new dresses; her new clothing had shrunk him to fit them.
Tumblr media
A month later, Robert, on he and Heera finding that no, there was no going back, was set up as the new Rohana Dey. Heera even gifted the new woman with a striking gold and ruby nath nose ring to say well, here we are now.
The expectation was that Rohana would go to You Are What You Wear to be fully outfitted for her new self.
Instead, she surprised Heera by going to her old tailor she had used when she had been Robert.
There she got five new suits made to fit her new form. “I am a computer programmer,” she said, “and this is how I dress when I’m working; the other things are just for fun.”
Rohana Dey, however, wore her nath when suited up. “it works for me,” she said.

A Letter from Ruchira Gupta
“I wrote this story because I wanted to share with you that someone somewhere of your age fought back and won.”
Tumblr media
I started writing this story when a fourteen-year-old girl just like Heera won a gold medal in a karate competition in Forbesganj. She was being groomed for prostitution along with other girls in her lane. A lane just like Girls Bazaar.
Her journey was not easy. Her achievement was heroic. I saw how she and her friends overcame hunger, fought off their fear, and stood up to traffickers with grace and gusto.
An annual cattle fair used to claim girls from that lane every year. When my NGO, Apne Aap, opened a community center and hostel there, we were constantly attacked by men like Gainul and Ravi Lala. They would stalk the mothers, their daughters, and me, hurling abuses, throwing stones, stealing from our offices, and even kidnapping girls.
We built higher walls around the hostel to prevent traffickers from jumping over. I posted guards outside my home, hired lawyers, filed police complaints and cases in court. Just like Mai, some mothers in the lane disobeyed their husbands, even though they were beaten up. Their daughters were the first batch of girls in our hostel.
Most of the events in this book are inspired by real people, places, and events.
I still remember it was early morning and I was fast asleep when a boy and his mother came to my home asking for help. The boy’s sister and cousin were locked up by traffickers who wanted to stop the girls from returning to our hostel. We had to mobilize the police to get them out. I noticed then that the girls were badly bruised, while the traffickers were unscathed. I wished that the girls had been able to fight back. Our Apne Aap women’s group met that afternoon at the center. Everyone was scared that they would be beaten in retaliation for the police raid. That’s when I suggested martial arts classes.
The women loved the idea. Someone knew a local karate teacher who taught in a private boys’ school. We hired him and the classes began. The bullying at school stopped. When the girls began to win competitions, something changed. The very townspeople who had asked the school principal to expel our red-light children began to respect them. Fathers in the community began to value their daughters.
The biggest change was in the girls themselves. They began to own their bodies and respect themselves. Their grades improved along with their self-confidence. Hundreds of girls from the lane have since finished school. Many are college graduates. They have jobs as animation artists, teachers, doctors, lawyers, chefs, and managers of pizza parlors and gas stations.
The truth is that there is not one, but many Heeras. Girls Bazaars still exist in many parts of our world, including the US. The brothel in Queens is real. A trafficking survivor from Indonesia told me the story of how she was locked up there and escaped by disguising herself in a burka. She is now a global leader in the struggle against trafficking.
The International Labour Organization estimates that there are over 40 million victims of human trafficking globally, with hundreds of thousands of victims in the United States. Human trafficking is the second-largest organized crime in the world, involving billions of dol- lars, according to the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Thank you so much for reading I Kick and I Fly. I wrote this story because I wanted to share with you that someone somewhere of your age fought back and won. I wanted you to know that change is possible. I have witnessed it in my own lifetime.
Heera’s story is a story of hope in spite of great odds. It’s about our bodies—who they belong to and the command they can give us. It is the story of a community that resolves to make change contagious and succeeds. I hope you find a friend in Heera who will give you some clues to making the changes you would like in your own life.
The martial arts classes continue in Forbesganj.

The Myth of Kalapahad
Most people in Odisha have heard about Kalapahad as the destroyer of temples, especially for his blitz on Jagannath Temple at Puri and Sun Temple at Konark after the attack on Barabati Fort.
Nonetheless, the identity of Kalapahad is shrouded in mystery as very little is known about him for sure. When he attacked Barabati Fort in 1568, it was as a general of Afghan army of the Muslim Sultan of Bengal to conquer Odisha.
What happened when he attacked Barabati Fort? The puzzle of the death of Mukunda Dev, the last independent Hindu ruler of Odisha and what followed the fall of Barabati Fort may never be solved, but were the legends about the 16 th century’s most ferocious Afghan general a myth that gained currency three centuries later?
Kalapahad attacked Barabati Fort when Mukunda Dev who was then ruling Odisha was away engaged in battle with the Sultan of Bengal Sulaiman Karrani on the banks of Ganga. The Afghan general led another wing of the Sultan’s army to Cuttack. Nothing much is known about what followed except from folklores. In one of his poems – Kalapahad - based on folktales Godavarish Mishra wrote: "Aaila Kalapahad Bhangila Luhara bada, Peeila Mahanadi pani Suvarna thalire heda parasile Mukundadevanka rani." (Then came Kalapahad, Broke the Iron gates. His army drank the waters of Mahanadi, the queen of Mukunda Deva served beef to Kalapahad in a plate of gold)This Odia couplet became well known in Odisha in the 19th century. A century later in his book Barabati Durga (The Fort of Barabati) Krupasindhu Misra wrote: “Aaila Kalapahad Bhangila Luhara bada, Peeila Mahanadi pani Suvarna thalire heera parasile Mukundadevanka rani''.
The substituting of the word Heda (Beef) with Heera (Diamond) obscured the situation during the fall of Barabati. While the use of Heda indicated that dishonour was meted out to Mukunda Dev’s Queen by being forced to serve beef to Kalapahad, the use of Heera suggested Queen’s appeasement of Kalapahad through presentation of diamonds and preventing ransacking of the fort.
Five years ago, an Odia play was staged on the premises of the Jagannath Temple at Ukkunagaram in Visakhapatnam. Artists of Sanskruti Vihar, Cuttack staged it. The report published on it in The Hindu on July 14, 2016 dateline said the play showed how Kalapahad managed his way to the palace destroying everything valuable on the way and tried to outrage the modesty of the Queen but she committed suicide. The play was scripted by Chandra Sekhar Nanda. But there is no historical evidence to corroborate it.
The circumstance of the death of Mukunda Dev is also riddled with inconsistencies.  While some believe Mukunda Dev was killed by Ramachandra Bhanja, the feudatory chief of Sarangagarh who proclaimed himself as king of Odisha at Gohiritikira near the present-day Jajpur town, some say he was killed by Kalapahad.
After the fall of Barabati Fort, Kalapahad turned to attack Mukunda Dev, who by then had been defeated by Sulaiman Karanni and taking shelter in the fort of Kotsima. As per the Khurda manuscript two agents of Mukunda Dev betrayed him. With their help Kalapahad took the jungle path and attacked his army from the rear. Mukunda Dev was defeated and killed in the battle.
With the Afghan invaders left unchallenged after the death of Mukunda Dev, the Barabati Fort passed into the hands of the Afghan Muslims and Odisha was thus conquered by the Sultan of Bengal in 1568.
Some believe Kalapahad was a Hindu Brahmin. His real name was Kalachand Roy. He converted to Islam after falling in love with Bengal Sultan’s daughter Dulaari. Later, he wanted to reconvert, but the priests at Jagannath Temple declined and he took out his wrath by attacking Hindu Temples. But leading historians believe he had Afghan origin.
In his History of Bengal Ghulam Hussain Salim wrote in 1788: “Of the miracles of Kalapahar, one was this, that wherever in the country, the sound of his drum reached, the hands and the feet, the ears and the noses of the idols, worshipped by the Hindus, fell off their stone figures, so that even now stone-idols, with hands and feet broken, and noses and ears cut off, are lying at several olaces in that country”.
Sometime in February 2016, scholars deliberated over the iconoclastic portrayal of Kalapahad at a seminar held at the National Archives of India Records Centre in Bhubaneswar.
There was by and large a consensus among the participating historians and researchers that Kalapahad attacked Odisha in 1568, but myths about him started doing the rounds three centuries later.
In Odisha during the Odia language revolution in 19th century he was portrayed as an ardent Jagannath follower who turned vindictive when he was not allowed to enter the temple. In Bengal he was seen as standing against Brahmanical oppression in plays and novels.
Some temples were destroyed during Kalapahad’s attack on Odisha. The scholars believed that his attack on Jagannath Temple in Puri is limited to legends fraught with inventions and not corroborated by facts. The destruction of the Sun Temple at Konark is also incorrectly attributed to him.
Such stories by way of literary medium of legends created the myth of Kalapahad. Was there a method behind it?
