This old hedge of Griselinia littoralis (New Zealand broadleaf) has had the lower branches removed exposing these characterful trunks. This crown lifting has allowed more space and light for the adjacent borders as the protection of the lowered evergreen foliage was no longer needed. This shrub or tree does best in a well-drained soil in full sun.

Newton Kyme Hall. North Yorkshire, England.

The halls origins were in the 17th Century but it was rebuilt around 1720 with landscaped gardens incorporating the remains of Newton Kyme castle, (not snapped). The left and right wings were added In the 19th century along with a kitchen block at the rear and a colonnade was added to the front.

During World War 2 it served as Air Defence Headquarters.

Grade 2 Listed.
