Thomas Hermanns hat uns die 90er Jahre zurückgebracht. Dabei hätte ich damals nicht einmal unter Folter zugegeben Boybands zu mögen! Nie im Leben! Das war so ziemlich das Uncoolste, was man sich damals vorstellen konnte. Nein, meine Freunde und ich, wir waren Grunge. Wir hörten Nirvana, Pearl Jam und Soundgarden und sahen immer aus, als hätte man uns direkt aus einer Mülltonne gezogen. Gelackte, gecastete Boybands? Niemals! Aber trotzdem, trotzdem, die Songs haben sich in alle Gehirnwindungen hineingewunden und wenn heutzutage auf einer Party ein bekannter Song von einer der Schönling-Bands von damals ertönt, dann kann plötzlich jeder mitsingen und rhythmisch mit den Hüften wackeln!

Denn, das muss das Rockerherz zugeben, es waren nun einmal überaus eingängige und mitsingbare Lieder, die die Jungs da trällerten. Und genau diesen unsterblichen Popsongs, denen huldigt Comedian, Moderator und Regisseur Hermanns nun mit einem Musical. Und was für ein Musical das ist! Das Theater am Potsdamer Platz kochte, das kann ich euch sagen. Es gab Kreischkonzerte wie zu NKOTBs besten Zeiten! Moderator Ole Lehmann, ein Fanboy aus tiefstem Herzen, führt durch den Abend und stellt uns die Jungs vor, die, ganz genau wie es sich für jede Boyband jemals gehörte, nach einem bestimmten Schema ausgesucht wurden: Da gibt es den Sonnyboy (Josh Randall), den, den die Mädchen alle süß finden und den auch Mama und Oma mögen, sieht er doch aus wie der perfekte Schwiegersohn. Und dann gibt es Fitboy Rik (Christopher Haul), der superfitte, gestählte Sportlertyp, für all die Fans, denen der Sonnyboy zu lieb ist. Und der 3. Boygrouptyp ist dann der zucker-zucker-zuckersüße, der rehäugige, der sanft-niedliche, der Nick Carter Typ: Sweetheart Sascha (Robbie Culley). Um all das Süße aufzuwiegen gibt es dann noch den Bad Boy, den Coolen, den Harten, den Rocker unter den lieben Jungs: Lucian (David Lei Brandt). Boyband Typ Nummer 5 ist einfach der Andere. Der eine andere Typ in der Gruppe an den sich niemand so richtig erinnern kann. Der einfach dabei ist, aber nicht wirklich eine eigene Biografie hat. Und nicht einmal einen Namen. Nummer Fünf eben. (Hector Mitchell-Turner).

Gemeinsam performt die neuerschaffene Boyband dann mitreißend die beliebtesten Songs der bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten Boybands aller Zeiten: Über die New Kids on the Block, East 17, Take That, die Backstreet Boys und Boyzone bis hin zu One Direction ist für jeden etwas dabei! Und auch alle anderen Besonderheiten, die die Boybands zu dem machten, was sie waren, gibt es natürlich live auf der Bühne: die Skandale, Skandälchen und Hahnenkämpfe in der Gruppe, die Videodrehs im strömenden Regen, die bis ins Detail choreographierten schweißtreibenden Dancemoves (Marvin A. Smith). Die fünf begabten Jungs geben wirklich alles und das Publikum geht mit Begeisterung mit. Man merkt, einige Mädels im Publikum haben das Kreischen und Ohnmächtigwerden, die ekstatischen Weinkrämpfe und die wasserglänzenden Männeröberkörper sehr vermisst. Die Songs werden mit Enthusiasmus gefeiert, es wird gejubelt und getanzt. Die fünf Sänger sind aber auch sowohl ein Augen- als auch ein Ohrenschmaus! Und Ole Lehmann macht mit seiner locker-anzüglichen Moderation ein rundes Ding aus dem Abend. Ob Grunger, Rocker oder bekennender Boyband-Fan, dieser Abend wird euch gefallen! Verpasst nicht diesen Ausflug in die Welt der gecasteten Erfolgsgaranten mit Ohrwurmgarantie! Dieses Musical ist eine fröhliche Verbeugung, eine lächelnde Hommage und ein gutgebautes Denkmal.

Columbus Crew SC bring their five-match unbeaten streak to Gillette Stadium where the New England Revolution are 4-1-1 this season in an Eastern Conference clash Saturday night.

Crew SC have won three of their last four, including a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday to move into second place in the Eastern Conference, while the Revolution have won two of their last three, beating Toronto FC, 3-2, in Foxborough, Saturday night.

It is the second meeting between the sides, who played to a 2-2 draw at MAPFRE Stadium on April 21.

New England Revolution

Brad Friedel made four changes to the team that fell to the Montreal Impact, 4-2, the previous week with Chris Tierney and Antonio Delamea starting in the four-man backline, Scott Caldwell replacing Wilfried Zahibo and Kelyn Rowe earning his third start for the injured Juan Agudelo.

The response to the defeat was terrific for New England (5-3-2), who raced out to a 2-0 lead on a Cristian Penilla brace inside of seven minutes. Teal Bunbury scored his fifth goal of the season one minute into the second half to extend the Revs lead before Toronto FC rallied to pull within a goal following a Delamea own goal and a late Sebastian Giovinco penalty kick.

“In my playing career, the most successful coaches and the best coaches always said the best teams never lost two in a row,” Friedel said after the match. “i think if you live by that, you can start to get runs together and have successful seasons. … I think this was another really good character check on our team after that second half performance against Montreal.”

Higuain put Columbus (6-3-3) in front from the penalty spot after Gyasi Zardes was pulled down by Kevin Ellis in the box and then Zardes struck for a second-half brace as Crew SC celebrated a second straight win, and third match without conceding.

“When I look at what this group is made of, you think about Wednesday –  us having the youngest team in club history, and tonight we had one of the older teams in club history. It just shows that everyone can step up,” Berhalter said after the match. “Everyone can play a part. I think tonight was a good example of veteran leadership, of guys having performances that help the team when a game. I think the whole week was a successful week.”

2017 NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Awards: Funeral Homes Honored for Excellence in Service to Families and Communities

Brookfield, Wis. – The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) is pleased to announce that more than 160 funeral homes have earned the 2017 Pursuit of Excellence Award. This award is presented by NFDA annually to firms that have demonstrated a commitment to raising the bar on funeral service excellence by adhering to strict ethical and professional standards and providing outstanding service to families and communities.

To earn an NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Award, a funeral home must demonstrate proficiency in key areas of funeral service, including compliance with state and federal regulations; providing ongoing education and professional development opportunities for staff; offering outstanding programs and resources to bereaved families; maintaining an active level of involvement in the community; participating and actively serving in the funeral service profession; and promoting funeral home services through a variety of marketing, advertising and public relations programs. Participants are also required to adhere to a Pledge of Ethical Practices.

NFDA will honor the 2017 Pursuit of Excellence Award Recipients on October 30 during the All-Star Recognition Ceremony, which will take place during the 2017 NFDA International Convention & Expo, October 29 through November 1 in Boston, Mass.

Art F City: This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Arctic Performances and Rooftop Sculptures

This is a bit of a slow week in New York’s art world. That’s a good thing, because everyone will need their energy for our goth party next week.

Nevertheless, we managed to track down at least one art outing per day that looks promising. Tuesday, Wong Kit Yi is closing her show of Arctic-specific performance documentation at P [exclamation]. Karaoke is rumored to be involved. Wednesday, Hercules Art Studio Program is opening a show about painting and the body that couldn’t feel more relevant to contemporary discourse. Thursday, we found a subversive performance night at Ridgewood’s The Woods, and Friday we’re looking forward to checking out Adrián Villar Rojas’s rooftop installation at the Met. This weekend MoMA opens the must-see Making Space: Women Artists and Postwar Abstraction, and the Queens Museum will host a Sunday book launch of election-woe poetry.

Remember: rest up. You’ll need that energy for dancing.

Wong Kit Yi: Futures, Again Closing Reception

Two years ago, Wong Kit Yi offered collectors the chance to commission performances ahead of a residency in the Arctic. Now, the results of that process are on view for the first time. The Building Toy Project

The Building Toy Project (Lucie Meichun Cai, Ke Hu, and Yujia Liu) asks us to reconsider the idea of architecture as a static space. With the advent of augmented reality and VR, it won’t be for long.

The team has designed a series of interactive virtual spaces that invite viewers to manipulate the architecture. It looks like the future is going to be a lot more playful.

This show, from curator Natasha Marie Llorens, is organized around assumptions about painting’s relationship to the body. Namely, that paying attention is one of the tentpole phenomena of the medium. And importantly, “politics that disavow the body are vicious.”

It’s the kind of topic I’m tempted to describe as timely, given the discourse surrounding the Whitney Biennial and issues of representation. But maybe it’s a topic that’s timeless? De Kooning said “Flesh was the reason oil paint was invented” way back in 1974, after all.

I’m not familiar with all the artists in the show, but it does seem the curator made smart choices. Eric Mack’s visceral paintings on fabric, for example, conjure a number of bodily associations—some seem to suggest care or an act of violence alternately, while others could allude to nomadic architecture and the idea of “shelter”.

Kevin Jerome Everson’s thoughtful short films are informed by documentaries, identity politics, and formalist filmmaking, but manage to feel like something totally apart from all of the above. Some of the works play with narrative, combining real and imagined (or exaggerated) vignettes from the lives of working class African Americans. Another follows cars manufactured in the artist’s Ohio hometown decades ago as they make their way to be crushed in a junkyard.

Every once and a while, we get invited to an event with a roster of artists we don’t (yet) know in a place we’ve never heard of, but we feel like we have to go. This is one of those nights. How can we pass up something called “Ghost Piss”? Ridgewood art space The Woods, in conjunction with curators Wild Embeddings and Pulsar, is hosting a night of performance art that sounds wonderful and weird.

From the listing: “Ulay said there is ‘a criminal touch to art’. Given today’s fascist phenomenons, what does it mean to approach one’s creative output with this sense of criminality — whether in attitude or imposed embodiment? Shall we not all become delinquents together…disobedient?”

The Roof Garden Commission: Adrián Villar Rojas

Spring is in the air, which means it’s time to take advantage of outdoor art stuff.

Arguably the most promising outdoor artwork this year is Adrián Villar Rojas’s new installation on the Met’s roof. The Argentine artist, who often works in concrete, is creating a series of large-scale sculptures that are inspired by the Met’s permanent collection. (The above image is from a previous commission). We can’t wait to see this one.

Making Space: Women Artists and Postwar Abstraction

Thank the gods (and curators Starr Figura, Sarah Hermanson Meister, and Hillary Reder) for this show. One of our biggest pet peeves at AFC is the art world’s bizarre tendency to label abstraction a man’s game (and therefor, usually, irrelevant). Women have been making abstract work forever, and hopefully a high-profile exhibition at one of the world’s leading art museums will set the record straight. The artists here are some of the biggest names in 20th century art, and it goes without saying this will be one of the year’s must-see shows.

Make or Take: A Poster for March for Science workshop

The upcoming March for Science (April 22nd, Earth Day) is arguably one of the most important fronts in the battle against the Trump administration. Pretty much: if science goes unfunded and ignored, all other issues will be moot because we’ll be dead from global warming or an asteroid strike anyway.

So join artist/curator Karen Lederer to make signs for the march. All materials will be provided. This is part of her exhibition HANDS ON, which will be on view until April 29th.

Book Launch & Readings: Resist Much / Obey Little

The day after the election, Michael Boughn and Kent Johnson decided to compile a collection of poetry. Months later, this is the result. Featuring work from 350 poets across 740 pages, this might be the post-inauguration therapy you need. The launch features readings and an opportunity for book signing. Half of the proceeds from book sales are going to Planned Parenthood.
