Endgame (2015)

When someone tells me they liked something about a movie I didn’t enjoy, I listen to what they have to say in the hopes that their enthusiasm might make me see something I didn't. When it comes to 2015’s Endgame, nothing you could tell me would make me change my mind. This movie is so melodramatic and full of clichés I don’t understand how anyone could be fooled into thinking it was good.

Jose (Rico Rodriguez) has always felt like everyone - including his mother (Justina Machado) - has paid more attention to his older brother, Miguel (Xavier Gonzalez). The only exception is his grandmother (Ivonne Coll), who has been patiently teaching him to play chess ever since he could remember. After Miguel dies in a car accident, the family falls apart. Jose begins acting out and winds up in detention. There, Coach Alvarado (Efren Ramirez) has the bright idea to teach the children discipline through chess.

My synopsis doesn't give anything away. You can tell Miguel is going to die early on. After a brilliant soccer match victory, he and his two chucklehead buddies leave a party to go drink in their car. There might as well be a meter in the lower-left corner that reads “Odds of survival: 10%”. When they start driving, it dips to 5%. When the driver pulls out his phone, you know they’re all headed to the grave. You're not the only one who saw it coming because no one at the funeral seems surprised. There isn’t a tear shed. It’s the first time you realize just how unconvincing the performances are. They weren’t exactly stellar before, but they were passable in a “tv movie of the week” kind of way. Now, the plot’s actually starting and we’re in trouble.

I want to applaud director Carmen Marron, who also wrote the screenplay with Hector Salinas. It’s obvious everyone’s hearts were in the right place. There's passion behind this project. Unfortunately, it isn’t enough. Endgame is a parade of tropes. You can practically count down the minutes before mom and Grandma have an argument over Jose and how he's been ignored. What you don’t expect is for mom to yell “Chess has torn this family apart!”

Endgame is only partially a drama. It’s also a limpwristed sports movie and kind of a family-friendly comedy. It’s just that the execution is so off nothing ever hits the mark. Jose’s chess coach, for example. No one asked him to start a chess club but he did it anyway. Afterward, we constantly hear him complain that he’s had to take a second job and dip into his rent money to keep the club going. You’re not sure if he’s joking. His boss, Principal Thomas (Jon Gries) doesn’t seem to care whenever he hears him. I think it’s supposed to drive the point that these kids are POOR, that this school has no money, whatsoever. Instead of crying, you’ll be laughing.

You won't be able to hold back your laughs because the film never restrains itself. Every character speaks like they came out of a cartoon from the 70's. They speak perfect English but insist on slipping on Spanish word to remind you that they are immigrants. Speaking of which, it’s time to discuss Dani (Alina Herrera). She’s Jose’s best friend. They’re together for half the movie, until we see officials dragging her parents away to bring them back to Mexico. She runs towards them in tears. We never see her again and that's that.

As a drama, Endgame fails because the characters are thin and the emotions are laid on thick. As a sports movie, it fares even worse. Normally, you’d have someone unfamiliar with chess play the role of the audience avatar. It’s safe to assume most people know the basic rules, but castling? It’s done without anyone bothering to tell us why, or how. Worse, by the time we get to the big tournament, we haven’t gotten to know anyone except for Jose. It wouldn't be a big deal if the champion wasn't determined by their team's score. If Jose wins, he could still walk away with nothing. Did I mention none of this is explained? You’re as outraged as the parents whose children are cheated out of a trophy because the conclusion comes out of nowhere!

Endgame ends by giving us a text detailing the real-life school where these events “took place”. I can see why it was included but let's just say that this is not one of those cases where truth is stranger than fiction. Endgame is pretty funny to watch as the actors struggle with the material and the story clumsily tries to handle far more than it can. You might enjoy Endgame as a bad movie because inspirational? Apparently enough has changed in two months (also I didn’t like my original post anymore) for me to reintroduce myself! I go by Malina here. I’m 22, from the UK, and my pronouns are she/her. I don’t do astrology or MBTI. I’ve just finished my bachelor’s degree in English Literature and not sure what to do next, but I’ve promised myself I’d get writing done.

A bit more about me: I love anything gothic or macabre, am a massive music nerd (perhaps my writing is a vehicle for my playlists, shush) and obsessed with anything to do with the latter half of the 20th Century, especially pop culture wise. I’m gay and Purposefully Vaguely Neurodivergent and those themes will come up in my work, constantly. My influences have been Carmen Maria Machado, Franz Kafka, Sylvia Plath, Neil Gaiman, Shirley Jackson, Patti Smith, William Shakespeare, Angie Thomas, JRR Tolkien, Emily Brönte and Carianne Leung. As you can guess, I love the malcontent trope.

My WIPs:

This Beautiful Night: an adult science fiction horror I have been working on for four years and two drafts, back after a hiatus, set in an alternate history London. Half a love letter to the city and half very thinly veiled political commentary. In addition to this is I Will Always Exist (working title again), a tangentially related prequel.

Wormwood Girls (Working title): a NA gothic novel set in the late 60s at an all-girls arts-driven university in the Channel Islands, dealing with one student, Noel, and her experience there as well as the grisly past she uncovers.

Pythia: a novella focusing on a Hector Montgomery between the years 1986, where he almost dies aged fourteen, and 1993, when he drops out of university and runs away from his life. This also is part of a possibility collaborative narrative that I at present cannot say too much on.

Imaginary MCU movies: “The Ultimate Spider-Man”

Set-up for the movie:

Following the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (and several years after “Spider-Man 3″), Tobey Maguire Spider-Man returns to his own universe. Even though he was brought in to help MCU Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire Spider-Man decides to retire since he’s gotten old and has lost his spark to continue working as a superhero. Plus, he’s gotten back together with Mary Jane Watson, another reason for him wanting to settle down.  

With the Tobeyverse lacking a Spider-Man, a new webslinger is set to take his place...

General plot for the movie: 

In keeping with Miles Morales’ origin story, Miles is bit by a radioactive spider while visiting his uncle, Aaron Davis. As a contrast to Tobey Maguire Peter Parker, Miles is horrified by his new powers, leading to him seeking a way to reverse the process. However, Miles accidentally reveals he has superpowers while trying to control himself, leading to the media reporting on a “second Spider-Man”.

The news reaches the infamous mercenary/bounty hunter Sergei Kravinoff, also known as “Kraven the Hunter”. OsCorp approaches Sergei and offers him a large prize if he catches the second Spider-Man for them. Kraven agrees, which leads to him crossing paths with Miles. 

Around this time, Miles Morales is approached by Tobey Maguire Peter Parker. Tobey Maguire Peter Parker, having seen Miles in the news, begins to wonder if Miles could take over the Spider-Man mantle. From then on, the movie becomes about Miles bonding with Peter, as well as both Spider-Men dealing with Kraven the Hunter. Miles eventually overcomes his fear over his newfound superpowers and proves himself a worthy successor to the Spider-Man title. 

The final battle ends with Kraven’s defeat and arrest (can’t kill him here since he has his own movie coming out) , as well as Tobey Maguire Peter Parker’s official retirement. Miles, now the new Spider-Man, ends the movie by swinging through New York City in a sequence reminiscent to the end of Spider-Man 1 and 2. 

Mid-credits scene: Miles Morales encounters Madame Web and learns that the webslinging heroes from all over the multiverse are needed to help prevent a “multiversal crisis” (Kang the Conqueror)

Name: Hector Machado

Appearance: Hector bears the physique of your typical strong man. This surprises many people because his clothing choice often hides his muscled tones and can make him look heavy set. Hector is also known for having a skin tone that is like his 1p. That light caramel color that many envy.

His hair is like the color of a dark reddish penny. Though pretty, Hector keeps his hair short. The sides are short while the top is a little shaggy. It’s not super thick, but he does have a lot of it. Bedhead is a serious issue for him because with all that hair it sticks up in all directions. His bright red eyes tie his features together.

Unlike the casual beach clothing of his 1p, Hector prefers to wear city-style clothing. Jackets with a solid t-shirt underneath are his go-to top, while cargo pants are his favorite bottom. He likes all the pockets they offer. Occasionally you can see him in jeans, but he doesn’t like them much.

To relax it's sweats. They hug where they need to while hanging loose in other places. Overall, a comfort level that cannot be beaten.

Personality: This man is calmly blunt. He has no time for people’s crap but doesn’t believe that they deserve anything more than being calmly told. For some, this cuts deep because it feels more like disappointment rather than the anger or annoyance they were expecting.

Hector has no care for formality. If introduced he won’t shake hands, all you get is a nod of the head. Hellos aren’t things he utters often unless he is to engage the other first. This extends past usual things. Like how he treats a king the same as he treats a peasant. It comes from spending time with both sides. He has seen the good and bad of both sides.

He isn’t very imaginative. Hector works in the box when it comes to plans. Sure, he finds techniques that one may not expect, but you could still find them in a book, or he would have been taught it by someone more imaginative.

Dead: His calmness upset the Reaper, so Hector was let go.

Weapon: Alejandro Sniper Rifle

Family:  Spain and Ecuador

ETC: Similar to their 1ps, Hector gets along well with Matt. They usually chat about life while smoking their cigarettes. They are also each other’s drinking buddies.

He hates sweets. He wants nothing to do with ice creams, cakes, or any other kind of sweets. They are always too intense. So instead of sweets, Hector prefers salty foods. Their saltiness matches his soul.

Due to his time under Spain, Hector considers Spain more of a distant cousin that he wants nothing to do with. Any time they are forced together, Hector and Armando have an intense stare down.

He prefers to be clean-shaven. Excess facial hair makes it a pain to clean up after a job.

Personalidade:

          Annabella é extremamente militar, o que a faz parecer séria e dura na maior parte do tempo. É reservada e evita de falar sobre seu passado. Na informalidade, exagera na bebida e aparenta dificuldade de se relacionar com pessoas novas.

          Nascida em uma família nobre que cuidava das Terras Altas em Strahnbrad – terras que antigamente pertenciam ao reino de Alterac, mas que depois da Segunda Guerra, foram determinadas como terras fronteiriças de Lordaeron com as terras que foram designadas à Stromgarde –, Annabella fugiu para o norte após perder quase toda a sua família no ataque do Flagelo há 14 anos. Fugiu com seu pai, Hector, para Andorhal e depois para o Monastério da Luz (mais tarde conhecido como Monastério Escarlate), onde souberam de toda a extensão do que afligia seu povo. Lá eles ingressaram na Cruzada Escarlate e Anna adotou a alcunha de Agatha após ser submetida à um duro treinamento e uma cruel doutrinação.

          Depois de terminar seu treinamento com o Mestre de Armas Harlan, foi transferida para a Manopla de Tyr, acompanhada do pai.

          Após anos servindo cegamente aos propósitos da Cruzada, Agatha viu seu pai ser brutalmente assassinado durante o massacre cometido por Cavaleiros da Morte no Enclave Escarlate (Manopla de Tyr), o que a fez desertar, sem rumo.

          Atuou como mercenária até o ano 32, quando tomou iniciativa de participar dos exércitos da Aliança contra a Legião Ardente. Mesmo sentindo-se deslocada, Agatha finalmente enxergou que agora sua arma talhava seus inimigos por uma causa realmente nobre e importante.

                     No ano 34, Agatha se alistou para lutar sob o manto da 7ª Legião em Arathi, mas em seu dia de folga em Ventobravo acabou por reencontrar o assassino de seu pai, e apesar de aparentemente conformar-se com o ocorrido sem conflitos, uma dúvida pairava em seu coração.

          A guerreira conheceu então a Inquisição Escarlate, onde conheceu Karina Burroth e Warren Dathrohan, a primeira tornou-se uma irmã, e o segundo o amor de sua vida. Uma missão para salvar Saiden Mãoferro (o filho de Galdhor, assassino de seu pai), foi o divisor de águas para que sua reputação e esforços na Inquisição fossem questionados, e assim, Warren e Annabella decidiram se desligar da companhia para fundar a própria.

                    A Investida Fulgurante então foi fundada, e sob seu manto Annabella abandonou sua alcunha e agora cresce à cada dia como guerreira, Vice Comandante e esposa de Warren Dathrohan.

3#. Filho de dois heróis da Liga da Justiça da América (Carter Hall, o Gavião Negro, e da Mulher-Gavião, Shayera Hall), Hector nasceu durante uma expedição ao Cairo. Por conta de uma má formação congênita, Hector nasce sem asas típicas da espécie dos thagarianos.

4#. Quando Hector nasceu sem asas, Carter por um tempo não conseguiu aceitar a condição do filho naquela condição. Olive, Again, by Elizabeth Strout

It was 2008 when Elizabeth Strout first introduced Olive Kitteridge in Emotional Wallop, winning her the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. After 11 long years, Olive is back in Strout’s latest Olive, Again. Set in a remote town of Maine, Olive, Again is an array of 13 short stories that are oddly interconnected with one another. The stories have something great to offer, as each character experiences transcendental moments in their journeys. And as Olive continues to wear the garb of an outspoken, intimidating woman, she comes face-to-face with her vulnerability and fears.

With Olive, Again, Strout has proved yet again why she is one of the greatest writers of this generation. Only a few writers can create a story so intense that it evokes a cocktail of emotions in the readers through the originality of the characters, details of the narratives, and carefully crafted sentences.

Michael Kenny’s Offseason Plan, and Plan Tracker

Before I get started with my own plan, I wanted to share the link to the South Side Sox offseason plan tracker spreadsheet, which I’ll be updating as all of your plans roll in. This will give us an idea of which decisions are the most popular, how much everyone is giving up in money and trades, and more.

2018-19 SSS Offseason Plan Tracker

Sorry, White Sox fans, but the window is not opening in 2019.

It could have, had things gone better in 2018. Yoán Moncada could’ve broken out for 4 or 5 WAR instead of backing into 2 and looking like 0. Michael Kopech could’ve stayed healthy and lived up to the hype. Any other prospect could’ve stayed healthy. Seriously, was Dylan Cease the only guy in the whole farm system that didn’t get injured? That’s ironic.

With Moncada providing more questions than answers, Kopech tearing his UCL, Lucas Giolito falling apart, Eloy Jiménez being held back, and a big ol’ pile of injuries in the minors, it’s become clear that 2019 is not the year. The Sox need another season of development to get the answers they currently lack, which makes pushing toward contention this winter a futile exercise.

Any moves the Sox make this offseason need to be with 2020 and 2021 in mind. In 2020, Moncada, Giolito, and Reynaldo López will have one more season under their belts, Jiménez will be settled in, Kopech will return, and the second wave of prospects will arrive in the majors. In 2021, Carlos Rodón and Yolmer Sánchez will reach free agency. Those two seasons represent the convergence of most of the organization’s talent, and hopefully enough players will take steps forward to extend the window well beyond that.

Of course, the two names on everyone’s minds are Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. I’m sure either of those guys would be thrilled to sign with a team that just lost 100 games, and I’m sure the White Sox would offer them enough money to do it, especially since they’re known for giving out blockbuster contracts. There are simply too many teams with too much money, too much existing talent, and too much TWTW for the Sox to even be a footnote in those negotiations.

My goal is to set this team up for future success knowing that the blockbuster is not happening, but hoping that they’ll go all in a year from now, when the time is right. Let’s get to it!

Arbitration-Eligibles

José Abreu – $16 million – TENDER

Avisaíl García – $8 million – TENDER

Yolmer Sánchez – $4.7 million – TENDER

Carlos Rodón – $3.7 million – TENDER

Matt Davidson – $2.4 million – TENDER

Leury García – $1.9 million – TENDER

The first four on this list are easy decisions. I wouldn’t blame you if you non-tendered Leury or Davidson, although I think they can both still be moderately useful players and their salaries won’t break the bank. If either has to be DFA’d midseason to give someone else a chance, so be it, but they stay for now.

Options

You already know how this goes in real life; James Shields’ option was declined, and Nate Jones’s option was picked up. Jones presents a tough decision, but I think that it’s wise to give him one more chance to pitch a full, healthy season. He hasn’t lost any velocity through all of these injuries, so there’s still hope that he can get back to pitching effectively.

Impending Free Agents

Miguel González (2018 salary: $4.75 million) – LET GO

Hector Santiago (2018 salary: $2 million) – LET GO

There are far too many pitchers in this organization to give any more innings to either of these guys.

Free Agent Signings

Sign RHP Nathan Eovaldi to a 3-year, $51 million contract.

After missing all of 2017 following Tommy John surgery, Eovaldi picked up right where he left off with a 3.60 FIP in 111 innings. He’s an above-average starter when healthy, and it’s unfortunate that he had such a great postseason because he’s no longer as under-the-radar as he was a month ago. I’m signing him for three years, although now I’m a bit worried that it will take four to get a deal done, so I’m upping the annual value to compensate.

Eovaldi issued just 20 walks this season, so he’ll be a great addition to a pitching staff that led the majors in free passes (653). He also generates a healthy amount of ground balls (46.8 percent career). Basically, Eovaldi should help to stabilize a highly uncertain 2019 rotation, and if he continues to pitch well, he becomes an asset to the team in 2020-21 or a trade chip to acquire help elsewhere.

Sign LHP Drew Pomeranz to a 1-year, $9 million contract.

The Sox already had one hole to fill in the rotation, but with Michael Kopech down for the count it’s probably a good idea to add another. For that reason, I’m signing both Eovaldi, a pitcher on the rise, and Pomeranz, a reclamation project.

Pomeranz posted back-to-back 3-win seasons before bombing with the Red Sox this year. He spent two months on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis, and the issue sapped both his velocity (90 mph average fastball, down from 92) and control (5.35 BB/9). He got some of his zip back in the second half, but the Red Sox bumped him to the bullpen after they acquired... Nathan Eovaldi.

Eovaldi and Pomeranz fill out the rotation, with Jordan Stephens the next man up out of Charlotte. There’s also a chance that Dylan Cease forces his way into the conversation, but given the nature of pitching there will always be opportunities.

Sign C Jeff Mathis to a 1-year, $2 million contract.

I really don’t know what to do about Omar Narváez. His bat is legit, but his glove does not belong at catcher. Like, at all. A guy who hits .275/.366/.429 shouldn’t feel like a fringe major leaguer, but that’s how much value he gives back with his defense. I gave a lot of thought to just moving Narváez to third base this offseason (hey, it worked for Brandon Inge), but I think the most realistic solution is to make him a part-time catcher, part-time 1B/DH. That will diminish his offensive value, but it will also limit his defensive damage.

Given Narváez’s limitations, Welington Castillo isn’t the right catcher to pair with him. I think keeping Omar as a catcher requires bringing in a defensive specialist as his caddy, and Mathis can be that guy. He’s a banjo hitter, to be sure, but he’s also an excellent defender. There’s a reason he’s continued to find work despite a career 50 wRC+. Oof, did I say 50? Well, ultimately he’s just keeping this spot warm for Seby Zavala.

Trades

Acquire 3B Maikel Franco from the Phillies for OF Blake Rutherford and RHP Jimmy Lambert.

The Phillies are looking to make a huge splash this offseason, and they can’t afford to wait around on Franco to realize his potential when Machado and others are there for the taking. At 26, Franco is still mostly projection because he’s yet to live up to his former elite prospect hype. He showed signs of life this year with a 105 wRC+, but his performance has been uninspiring overall, in part due to some conditioning issues. Give him a change of scenery, get him in the Best Shape of His Life, and maybe he’ll run with the new opportunity.

The Sox have such a ridiculous glut of outfielders and pitchers that they can start dipping into it a bit to diversify their assets and take a risk on a player like Franco, who has three more years of control. Rutherford and Lambert are expendable without putting the depth of the system in jeopardy.

Acquiring an everyday third baseman also allows Yolmer Sánchez to shift into a super-sub role, where I think he can be very valuable on a good team. If Franco flops, Sánchez can just take the hot corner back. This also means saying goodbye to José Rondón, but I don’t really believe his low-average power surge is sustainable.

Acquire RHP Stiward Aquino from the Angels for C Welington Castillo and $3 million.

I really liked the Castillo signing at the time. The only reason I didn’t include him in my plan last year was because I didn’t think the Sox would be able to get him. Of course, a midseason PED suspension is a great way to kill any goodwill with your organization and fanbase.

Moreover, as I said above, Castillo just doesn’t fit on this team anymore. Unfortunately, these factors combined give the Sox about as much leverage on the trade market as they had with Nick Swisher. I suspect some team that really needs help behind the plate will allow Castillo to don the tools of ignorance, but they’ll want to acquire him at a discount and give up little in return.

I imagine the Los Angeles Angels would take on Castillo given that their current catchers are a 29-year old rookie, a 26-year-old rookie, and Kevan Smith. In exchange they’re sending Aquino, a 19-year-old pitcher with a lanky 6-foot-6 frame who lost his 2018 to Tommy John surgery.

Other Moves

Offer OF Eloy Jiménez a 7-year, $50 million extension.

I don’t expect Jiménez to sign an early-career extension the way many young White Sox players have. He’s a star waiting in the wings, and the Sox done him wrong at the end of 2018. That said, a record-shattering deal like this might get his attention given that his amateur signing bonus was a mere $2.8 million. It would also spare both sides the “Work on your defense for two weeks” charade.

In all likelihood, the charade is still on. If it is, Nicky Delmonico breaks camp with the major league team and, barring injury, he’s the odd man out come April 12.

Get Matt Davidson on a mound.

Seriously. I don’t think there’s any reason that a team can’t lean on its backup DH to throw two or three innings in garbage time. In an era where relievers are more important than ever, converting a defensively limited guy into a two-way player and pitching him in low-leverage situations can spare the rest of the bullpen. It may even allow the Sox to forego whatever random junkballer veteran swingman they would need instead. It’s the new market inefficiency!

Summary

You may have noticed that this team is not that good, but it’s a pretty big step forward from 2018. If things break right, they could push into the 75-to-80-win range, and that would set the table for a serious push in 2020.

This team’s payroll is in the neighborhood of $88 million, and only Eovaldi and Tim Anderson (and possibly Jiménez) have guaranteed contracts beyond 2019. That kind of flexibility opens up endless possibilities for next offseason, when the free agent market will be headlined by players like these:

It looks like the White Sox pursuit of Manny Machado may be over. His brother-in-law, Yonder Alonso, was designated for assignment this afternoon just hours after his charity event was announced. Woof. The Sox usually keep things in-house, but I guess this leaked. On the other hand, FINALLY, WE SEE SOME JUSTICE!

With Yonder’s spot cleared, after he was slashing a measly .178/.275/.301 and posting a -1.1 fWAR, who will be promoted? I have two words for you (most names are two words, shockingly): DYLAN CEASE. Come on. This team is currently carrying five guys who can play the outfield. Promote Cease. Promote the recently acquired Hector Santiago, and slightly bolster your paltry rotation. This will make for an interesting situation as to when Cease makes his debut. I will be in attendance tomorrow and Saturday, although the weekend rotation has been announced, so selfishly I want him to start against the offensive juggernaut, Minnesota Twins. He’s going to have to face a good offense at one point. Don’t baby the guy. Let’s see what he can do.

Anyways, I don’t see the Sox adjusting the rotation, but with Anderson sidelined for a few weeks with thankfully only an ankle sprain and Moncada day-to-day, put a little excitement into the fanbase and promote some starting pitching. Lord knows we need all the help we can get. Go Sox!
