One thing that’s been almost lost to the sands of time is the fact Heather Poe, the very likely to die (without fan patches) ghoul character, is named after the wife of Dick Cheney’s lesbian daughter, Mary. In the early 2000s gay rights were a hot button issue, and the John Kerry campaign very half-heartedly courted the queer vote in 2004 while the media made a big thing of Dick Cheney having a lesbian daughter.

I don’t know if it was intentional, or one of those things where you hear a name a lot (like on the news) and it just gets stuck in your head. But when Bloodlines just came out in 2004, there was a definite moment of “um… what…” when you hear Heather’s full name, cause Mary Cheney and her wife were being constantly used as a gotcha cudgel against the Bush/Cheney admin all through the re-election year. It was reportered on with the same glee as that homophobic senator caught having sex with men, a la “haha you claim to hate gays but how do you explain this?!”

Heather Poe the real person doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page, and now if you search the name you get a weird mix of real world and game results. Maybe real Heather Poe being pushed aside by game Heather Poe is a good thing. All she and Mary ever wanted was to be left alone.

And another fun fact was it was one of the first games to be made with Source, but the release date (as if they weren’t having enough trouble) had to be pushed back whenever Half Life 2’s was because Valve refused to let any Source game besides HL2 drop first. That’s only the tip of the dev hell ice berg… and history seems to be repeating with Bloodlines 2, but I hope the end result is at least as good as the first.

Still, the name thing will always bug me.

Going tru character requests. I genuinely love Heather and her slow decline and dehumanization in the game is genuinely so well made. The way she starts off as a character and then just ends up as a source of blood that we can force to change clothing like a little doll with no further line of conversation.
