"WHEN I WAS 13, THAT WAS MY PLAN GOING TO MAKE A RECORD WITH STEVE ALBINI"
FRANK IERO'S NEW EP SEES HIM TEAM UP WITH STEVE ALBINI, AND AN UNEXPECTED 4 GUEST - HIS FIVE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, LILY. WORDS: HEATHER MCDAID.
FRANK IERO & THE PATIENCE
KEEP THE COFFINS COMING EP
'Keep The Coffins Coming' is a glimpse at the time between 'stomachaches' and 'Parachutes',
where Frank lero and the cellabration- x-Patience worked out where they were going next. As the band now approach the post-Parachutes crossroads of 'Where next?, it feels the fitting time to release this snapshot. 'I'm A Mess' is rougher and raw around the edges, a fledgeling version of the song that would be streamlined for the upcoming album. It's got the Steve Albini touch of capturing the vibe of a room - like the basement jam version, the live version. 'Best Friends Forever' came to life years ago with Frank's kids in tow, helping with the writing and dare we say stealing the show in
the video, and here it evolves into the full band version. 'No Fun Club' leaps off with some of the 'Danger Days' swagger and Frank yells and shifts gears into the punk revelry he excels in. 'You Are My Sunshine' is sickeningly chirpy at the best of times, but put the lero twist on it, and it becomes a mellow, stripped back version of itself to close proceedings.
The EP saw Frank and co. pondering their future; it was never about perfection, but capturing a snapshot in the band's lives and a rare opportunity to work with their idols. Rarely do you see the middle step between albums, you just see the endgame transformation. But here it is - the unapologetic, raw and eclectic bridge of Frank lero's solo work, the bones of what the band moved on to be.
Heather McDaid
Frank lero knows one or two things about ticking items off the ol' bucket list. In his time with My Chemical Romance, he played a sold out Madison Square Gardens, appeared on Saturday Night Live, and headlined Reading & Leeds. He has more plaques than he knows what to do with, and that's just for starters.
"I've been extremely fortunate in the things that I've gotten to do and the bands I've gotten to play with," says Frank. "We crossed off quite a few of those bucket list opportunities with My Chem and now to be able to do that too with my solo career is unbelievable."
This latest item to be scored off the list is to work with the iconic producer Steve Albini, who produced Nirvana's final album 'In Utero, on his EP 'Keep The Coffins Coming: The obvious place to start is, how exactly do you react when you get a call saying that you're off to work with someone like Steve? "It's weird, man" laughs Frank. "I was in the middle of writing and trying to figure out the next record. My manager Paul asked for bucket list stuff, people I'd always wanted to work with. Steve was always at the top of that list."
"When I got the call that he wanted to work with us and we were booked it was like-" he bursts out laughing "-I don't think I was able to wipe the smile off my face. I'd been wanting to work with him from, jeez, like '94. When I was 13, that was my plan, I'm going to make a record with Steve Albini, I don't care how it happens, but that was the dream record to make.
"His records sound so visceral. Never before did I put on a record where I felt like I was in the room. He really is hands off in that he wants to capture the band's sound. It's a special thing, like visiting a museum and getting to be in a room with some of your favourite bands and listening to some of your favourite records. Take 'In Utero' for example, those sounds and performances are straight up what was played in that room, there's no bells and whistles or crazy magic behind the scenes. It's all about the way he likes it and the way he records it."
That was the magic Frank was excited to capture. "I kept thinking on the trip out to Chicago as I'm driving, 'Oh, man, I'm going to get the call any moment that this was a hoax and it's not going to happen!"
But it did happen, and at an interesting
FRANK IERO & THE PATIENCE
time too. Sitting between albums, Steve captured the time in Frank's career between his first solo record and the second, when he was still unsure what it was going to become. video features their vocals and adorable balaclava-clad appearances, and now it's a full-band song produced by the legendary Albini.
"They are adorable," he laughs. "Lily is the one that actually wrote the chorus to that song. Whenever she and any of the other kids would fight, she would passive aggressively stick this thing in their face, this best friends forever song and it really started with 'Best friends forever but not now. She was just like screaming at them to let them know that she was very, very upset with them." The EP is made up of four songs, one of which made the cut for the subsequent album. "I had written a couple of songs that I knew I wanted to be on the album, but I didn't know exactly what 'Parachutes' was just yet," he explains. "One of the songs was 'I'm A Mess. It might have ended up just being a standalone track, but I wanted to bring that in regardless. I knew I wanted to bring in a whole band version of the song 'Best Friends Forever' and also 'No Fun Club. I had been toying with that, and I really needed to get it out of my head. When that started to take shape, I knew that it could work as a standalone release.
"I DIDN'T KNOW IF THESE SONGS WERE EVER GOING TO SEE
THE LIGHT OF DAY." FRANK IERO
"My way of dealing with that was to take this song and make it into something. We all sat down in a circle with my guitar one day and figured out what the chording would be, wrote the rest of the song and recorded it in my basement.
I thought it would be really fun to release it and whatever profits came in can go into their college funds. I started to really listen to the structure of the song and realised, man, I can play this live, and they would get a kick out of it whenever they saw I played the song and kids sang along. I put together a full band version and thought it'd be cool to have the original version - like I did with 'Mess' - with the kids on it, and now you have this full band Steve Albini version.
That's the other thing too, a bucket list: I'm going to go in the studio with Steve Albini, someone I've wanted to record with ever since I was a young kid getting into music and punk rock and playing in bands. That mirrors my kids being young, writing songs. How cool is that? She released her first single and video at five, and I took that song and recorded it with a legendary engineer and producer. That's crazy. I knew that song needed to be done that day.
Basically what you're hearing is a stop gap where the band transforms from where we were at the end of touring 'stomachaches' and right before we really fully realised the 'Parachutes' record. That time for me is almost like this lost in translation moment. There was definitely this bridging gap between those two records - this is that hidden step. It's interesting because as a listener, you never see that step. You hear album one. wait while your favourite bands are in the studio, then hear the final step in the evolution to album two.
Exactly! Here's the thing, when we went in the studio, I didn't know I was going to record an EP. I just wanted to record these songs, whether it was just for me or not I'd be happy with it. I didn't know if these were ever going to see the light of day, it was something I needed to do."
'Keep The Coffins Coming' is a snapshot in time. It captures an opportunity beyond
Frank's wildest dreams, a crossroads where he pondered the next step, and a gift to his kids in various forms. Right now, he sits between album two and three. The question is, where next? Whether or not there'll be the chance to see the next stop gap for this particular era, we sure are excited about the upcoming ride.
An interesting side-effect of the process was double-recording songs. Frank wrestled for a while comparing the two versions of 'I'm A Mess' but ultimately grew to see they fit perfectly in their own respective worlds as two different versions. Seeing that evolution in songs is something he was also able to gift his children by including their collaborative song 'Best Friends Forever.
Frank lero And The Patience's EP 'Keep The Coffins Coming' is out 22nd September.

Page 6: Kelly Clarkson’s daytime talk show tied with Ellen DeGeneres’ long-running series in the year-end TV ratings battle -- The Ellen DeGeneres Show lost advertisers and A-listers and audiences after former staffers came forward with stories of a toxic workplace while The Kelly Clarkson Show which was recently renewed through 2023 has become a household staple in its sophomore season and gaining viewers in daytime’s key demographic of women and ending 2020 on a season high -- Ellen is putting on a good front but deep down she feels threatened by Kelly’s success and she’s done everything she can to prove that she’s changed but she still can’t win back her fans plus Ellen is convinced that Kelly is trying to steal her famous friends even going so far as to demand that if a celebrity agrees to appear on Ellen then they can’t go on Kelly; it’s one or the other from here on out
Page 7: Rihanna and A$AP Rocky celebrated their first Christmas together in her native Barbados where the couple went on a sunset cruise around the Caribbean isle with her loved ones -- Christmas is a really important time for Rihanna and it’s not often that she gets to see her family and friends all at once and she wanted A$AP to be a part of it -- he was a bit nervous meeting everyone but he was worrying over nothing because they all adore him -- she’s really close with her family so it was important for him to get to know them before things begin to get serious

Page 8: Critics slammed Demi Moore’s new movie Songbird calling it a Michael Bay-produced travesty that exploits the coronavirus epidemic for thrills -- the film takes place in the not-so-distant future during a COVID-23 outbreak with Demi playing a wealthy woman who sells immunity bands on the black market for a hefty price -- Demi jumped at the chance to star in the movie; with its topical storyline she expected it to be a box-office hit and she’s disappointed that it’s flopped and is shocked at the backlash and she certainly never intended to hurt anyone’s feelings
* Hilaria Baldwin proudly showed off her post-baby body posting a photo of herself holding 3-month-old son Eduardo while wearing nothing but her bra and underwear but instead of being praised for her postpartum pic she was inundated with cruel comments after Amy Schumer reported the snap seemingly roasting Hilaria for setting unrealistic standards for new moms -- while the comedian soon apologized and deleted the image it wasn’t long before she replaced it with several other shots and making fun of the controversy -- there’s a fine line between being funny and being cruel and Amy overstepped the mark in Hilaria’s eyes

Page 21: Courteney Cox was recently reunited with boyfriend Johnny McDaid after spending nine months apart due to the COVID-19 crisis but the long-awaited meetup in Ireland was far from romantic -- this was a make-or-break trip to either figure things out or go their separate ways and shortly after arriving Courteney laid all her cards on the table and she made it clear to Johnny that in order to move forward things had to change -- with her living in LA and Johnny based in Ireland the time difference is a real problem and FaceTime calls are few and far between and texts go unreturned for hours or sometimes not at all and it’s a daily struggle and Courteney’s at the end of her rope

In another lifetime, I used to be a regular visitor to the Harbour Arts Centre in Irvine, which then was home to the lovely Borderline Theatre Company. So it wasn’t hard to find my way back to this very pleasant space, located on the front of Irvine’s harbour. I found myself humming as I approached…Irvine, I’m in Irvine, and my heart beats so that you would hardly know…. Anyway, I was of course there for the Tidelines Book Festival, a festival which can fairly lay claim to having a first class programme of authors. I was only there for the Saturday, but the festival actually lasts for three days and puts on events for a wide range of readers, both adults and children.
As I arrived, lots of children had just come out of a session led by Mark Smith entitled ‘Slugboy Saves the World’ and it was great to see so many little superheroes who had clearly really enjoyed their session.
Pleasantly located, with a very nice café in the heart of the centre, what better way to spend a day than in the company or readers and writers?
First up on my list was the exceptional Su Bristow, whose book, Sealskin, based on the legend of the Selkies, was such a huge hit when it launched at the end of last year.
Interviewed by Alison Craig, Su was fascinating and quite enthralling when she talked about what inspired her to write Sealskin and how her own life experiences had contributed to the themes of the book.
I loved this book so much that even though I have it on kindle I just had to buy a hard copy and get Sue to sign it – that’s how good it is.
Me with Su Bristow
But I’m not going to expound on this in any depth, because Sharon Bairden has already done so on her blog – and as her ability to share is limited right now, I’m going to suggest that you nip over and read her account of the session at her blog Chapter in My Life.
You can purchase Sealskin here : Orenda Books Amazon Waterstones
The second session I attended was for a book I’d been keen to know more about since its launch and as I hadn’t been able to attend the Edinburgh Book Festival session, it was a real delight to be able to attend a discussion about Nasty Women, published by 404 Ink and originally published as a crowdsourced enterprise.
The title, is of course, taken from that horrible Trump quote about Hillary Clinton.
It was both a joy and an inspiration to listen to Jonatha Kottler and Laura Waddell talk about their experiences of writing for the book which is a selection of writing by women on what it means to be a woman in today’s world. Both Laura and Jonatha were full of praise for the passion and inspiration of the editors behind the project, Laura Jones and Heather McDaid and how every woman who worked on the book very much felt that it was a collaborative project.
Each woman came from a different perspective and each wrote about quite different things, but all felt very supportive of each other and the project as a whole.
Laura Wadell’s piece is very much about what a Scottish working class girl faced when she wanted to try and break into the world of the arts and media – and in her case, publishing, something she has now achieved very successfully, but which in the 21st Century was a lot harder for her than you might imagine – in what is supposed to be, but clearly is not, a classless society.
As Laura says; “It is not our stereotype and it is not, for the most part, our reality……a lack of stories told from our perspective has lent itself to dull, flattened portrayals that do not reflect the reality of diversity ”
Jonatha’s essay is entitled ‘Fat in every language’ and she spoke engagingly and with humour on being larger than whatever the norm is. But living comfortably in your own skin and not for the expectations of others, is what her piece is about, alongside the reality of how fat people are commercially exploited.
Nasty Women covers a range of voices and a whole host of different and diverse experiences, from experiencing racial divides in Trump’s America, to sexual assault, Brexit, pregnancy and more. These are the women who share their real experiences and hold the truth to account in the midst of a global society where inequality and intolerance is bubbling to the surface.
This is why I think Nasty Women is a really important book for me, and as Margaret Attwood said on the cover why it is “an essential window into many of the hazard strewn worlds younger women are living in right now’.
I’m really looking forward to dipping into this one. You can buy Nasty Women here: Waterstones Amazon
My final session of the day was just delightful. Three of the nicest men in crime fiction were chatting about Nordic Noir.
Gunnar Staalesen, the grandfather of Nordic Noir and celebrating 40 years of writing about his protagonist, detective Varg Veum, was paired with the massively talented Thomas Enger, writer of the Henning Juul books.
Both were in conversation with our own Michael J. Malone, whose House of Spires has just been published. All three are published by Orenda Books, so you just know that they are all going to be exceptionally well written.
Gunnar Staalesen began writing at the age of 17 and published his first book at 22 – an experimental novel inspired by the work of Jack Kerouac.
What really introduced him to the idea of being a crime writer though was the work of Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, to whom he is very quick to pay a fulsome tribute. Reading the Martin Beck books introduced him to the possibilities of writing crime and he began to read and be inspired by the books of Chandler, Ross McDonald and Dashiel Hammet.
He credits Sjöwall and Wahlöö as the writers who really began to stir the interest of academics and newspapers alike and sparked off the interest in Norwegian crime. Then, in 1974, Norway’s biggest publishing house held a competition for a new crime novel and Gunnar entered and came second.
This led to the publication of his two police procedurals, published in paperback, not hardback as was usual for other genres, but that had the happy fortune of making his books more instantly affordable.
Then he came up with the idea of translating the idea of the American P.I. into a Norwegian setting and thus Varg Veum was born.
Thomas Enger was only 4 when Gunnar published his first book! Thomas’ father was a teacher who really wanted his son to read the classics, but that didn’t really interest him and when he read his first crime novel at the age of 15/16 he knew he had found his genre and was hooked for life.
He read the books of Gunnar Staalesen and Henning Mankel as well as many others. He saw that others had found a way of telling their stories through crime novels and that a good crime story could be a way of seeing ordinary society through the stories, utilising language and that crime literature could be just as good as any ‘serious’ literature.
As Staalesen says, throughout time from Dickens onwards, people want to hear big stories well told, whatever the genre.
Enger is writing a series of 5 books about the journalist Henning Juul, which delves into the depths of Oslo’s underbelly, skewering the corridors of dirty politics and nailing the fast-moving world of 24-hour news.
Enger’s protagonist lost his son in a fire in their apartment. Each Henning Juul book can be read as a stand-alone in that each has its own mystery or mysteries, but throughout each book is the running theme of Juul searching for his son’s killer.
Enger has built a fair bit of himself into his protagonist; both are journalists, both compose music and Juul lives in an apartment not at all dissimilar to Enger’s own. But there are of course serious differences, not least that Juul is quite grief stricken over the loss of his son. His wife, Nora, has managed to get back to work and in doing so has been able to process her grief and move on, but Henning spends two years and a lot of Aquavit just staring at the walls.
Enger does though like to mix humour with his darkness to temper the effect of the blackness.
So what is it about Scandi Noir that grabs us so firmly? Perhaps, the authors speculated, it is the fact that they create their fiction over a series of long, dark wintery nights which whisper their melancholy?
Or maybe it is the fact that nature is always present around them. Whether in Staalesen’s Bergen or Enger’s Oslo, there is always a view of nature to surround you.
Enger agrees that it great that fantastic authors have put Scandinavian writing firmly on the map, but points out that it can also create unrealistic expectations especially hrough the marketing. So the temptation to call a new voice ‘the next Jo Nesbo’ is huge, when of course the new authors style and voice may be very different indeed.
It was a fantastic discussion, lightly and ably chaired by Michael Malone and was a great end to a brilliant day.
My huge thanks to Tidelines and to Michael Malone for their help and to all the authors who I was able to meet and chat to – you are all fabulous.

Gunnar Staalesen’s recent Wolves in the Walls is here: Orenda Amazon Waterstones

404 Ink and BHP Comics on collaborative publishing
by Natasha Onwuemezi
Scottish publishers 404 Ink and BHP Comics are partnering to bring out a graphic novel anthology in celebration of the centenary of women gaining the vote in the UK. We Shall Fight Until We Win celebrates a century since women gained the right to vote inthe UK in 1918, and the "many pioneering women who have been, and are part of the ongoing fight". The Bookseller spoke to 404 Ink’s Laura Jones and BHP’s Sha Nazir to find out what it was like working together.
Why did you guys decide to collaborate and what has it been like working together on this title?
Sha Nazir of BHP: BHP and 404 have a lot in common. We are both relatively new, independent publishers creating books outside of the mainstream in Scotland. This book is very timely and we realised that, working together, we could create a book which was beyond the usual scope of our respective houses and push it to be a success. Working together on We Shall Fight Until We Win has been a great experience. Heather [McDaid, co-director of 404 Ink] and Laura are such a powerful team who bring with them a lot of expertise in the area of anthologies and it's brilliant to be part of that.
Laura Jones of 404 Ink: It's fair to say we've had a substantial admiration for BHP Comics since they established. We share very similar opinions on how publishing could and maybe should work and what books should be given the space they deserve.
What do you most admire about each other?
SN: 404 Ink is a powerhouse which you can't help but admire. I think, though, what is most striking about 404 is their determination to create what they identify as missing from the book industry and from the market, catering for overlooked or underestimated readers out there. They are a good influence on Scotland's publishing scene.
LJ: We knew of them in the early days when they were known as Black Hearted Press and have loved watching them grow from strength to strength, truly making a place for comic creators in Scotland. The Mighty Women of Science is a title we particularly admired BHP for and beyond their publications, their insane convention organisation skills in bringing Glasgow Comic Con to thousands per year - that's truly something we're in awe of. They're carving out those spaces for comic lovers in Scotland that maybe weren't as prominent before. They're an important organisation and we're very lucky to be working with them.
Where did the idea for the book come from?
SN: The title comes from one of the original Suffragette banners and slogans. We Shall Fight Until We Win, as a title, highlights the fact that the work suffragettes began hasn't yet been completed but their purpose is being upheld by the generations which came after them. Both in Britain and internationally there is a lot of progress still to be made for reaching equality, especially in politics. Westminster is, after all, 48th in the world for representation of women, with women making up only 32% of the House of Commons.
Do you have any plans for future collaborations?
SN: We would love to work with 404 Ink in the future. Making We Shall Fight Until We Win with them has been great and I am sure you will see more from this pairing on your bookshelves in the future.
