In a 58-year-old congratulatory message, Abiodun states that the Vice President is still a dependable patriot
Tumblr media
The governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has greeted Senator Kashim Shettima, the vice president of Nigeria, on his 58th birthday and called him a dependable patriot. In a statement issued by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, his Adviser on Media and Strategy, Governor Abiodun also praised the former governor of Borno State, describing him as an intellectual of the highest calibre who has made significant contributions to government and civil administration with his extensive academic background. He claimed that Shettima's history of ingenuity and statesmanship, along with his preference for transforming paradigms via selfless leadership, influenced President Bola Tinubu's selection of him as Vice President. Prince Abiodun prayed for the Vice President to live a fulfilling life in good health, enabling him to continue making significant contributions to Nigeria's progress. His statement says “On behalf of my family, the government, and the good people of Ogun State, I heartily congratulate our cerebral Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, on the occasion of his 58th birthday. “Today, we celebrate not only the anniversary of your birth but also the remarkable journey you have undertaken in service to our great nation. Your unwavering commitment to nation-building and your relentless pursuit of progress have left an indelible mark on the fabric of our society. “Throughout your distinguished career, you have exemplified the qualities of a true leader. “As Vice President, you have continued to champion initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth, social inclusion, and infrastructural development. Your visionary leadership in advocating for education, healthcare, and youth empowerment has inspired many and positioned our nation for a brighter future. Your ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, from local communities to international partners, demonstrates your commitment to building a united and prosperous Nigeria. “Your compassion and empathy shine through in your interactions with citizens. You have always been a voice for the voiceless, advocating for those in need and ensuring that their concerns are addressed. Your humility has endeared you to many, making you a beloved figure among Nigerians. “As I wish you a more impactful life in good health, I want to extol your virtues of loyalty, courage, and leadership acumen, which make you a dependable co-driver of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.” Read the full article

This is such a fun idea! I'm going to cut my response because it's long.
1. I read the book for college in an English lit course last year. It was very divisive in the classroom. I go to school online at the University of Maryland Global Campus with many active duty or former members of the U.S. armed forces, their spouses, and their children. Several such persons took a great deal of offense to the text.
One drill sergeant classmate called the book vulgar and compared it to Mein Kampf, which he claimed is not studied in History courses at the college level. I am double majoring in both History and English lit and was happy to correct him on that point. He then tried to deflect and say he objected to being taught in the style of "indoctrination," but I can personally say, our professor operated with the utmost professionalism at all times and never tried to steer opinions or quash dissenting voices. I heard mostly objections to the book among my classmates. They claimed their views were suppressed by the college even as their views were freely expressed in the classroom discussions and in the majority within our class.
For my positive reception of the text, I was called ahistorical and un-American, hardly for the first or last time in my life. Please bear in mind, I am speaking about people whose college educations are being entirely paid for by the U.S. government without academic parameters they must meet in order to get that funding, as far as I understand it.
I am located stateside and I'm a civilian. I have paid for my own college expenses via scholarships and Pell Grant money. In my opinion, I have earned what aid I am given through maintaining a 4.0 GPA for the past four years and meeting certain other conditions. I suppose from the point of view of my classmates affiliated with the armed forces that they or their family members also "earned" their college educations (not to mention other things like their healthcare, career training, international travel expenses, housing, etc) with their bodies in service. For several of my classmates this service was the labor of a family member, not their own. I had to meet enrollment and academic conditions these classmates were not held to. It was shocking to hear classmates complain about being restricted and indoctrinated by this book's inclusion in the curriculum when they were perfectly at their liberty to speak their minds about it, to write what they felt, and to take this course over and over if they failed it without any loss of funding.
It was a very interesting experience being lectured about historical authenticity, what America does and does not owe to whom and why, and other such topics by these armed forces-affiliated English majors who had little sense of historical nuance or patience for viewpoints other than their own. Several had very personal reasons for discomfort with the novel such as, "I viewed it as an insult to America/my husband/my family/my dad/myself." I saw a lot of "America, love it or leave it!" rhetoric, which I pointed out is a tremendously privileged position to take, particularly regarding a Vietnamese family of war refugees such as Viet Thanh Nguyen's. (This observation was not received well by persons who live/d on American military bases overseas.)
I really loved the book and the author's other works, particularly the personally-informed short story "The War Years" and the nonfiction book Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War. I recommend both heartily. I intend to read more of Viet Thanh Nguyen's work. I knew I had to watch the show after my classroom experiences.
2. My favorite performance so far is Hoa Xuande's portrayal of the Captain. He conveys the intense tension and the "masks" of the character amazingly well. He has an incredible sense of timing, and I can't say enough about how wonderfully he's handling the sensitive element of PTSD.
I am also very interested in the expansion of Lana's character as portrayed by Vy Le. Vy Le impressed me in episode four particularly.
On the whole, I'm really looking forward to watching more!
hello fellow Sympathizer fans !
so i was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing a sort of book club/show discussion
i don't know enough about the internet to use discord or something like that, but i'm very interested in reading your opinions so i thought i would leave some questions here and you can reblog with your thoughts !!
i'll ask more questions every couple of days and on mondays after a new episode airs !
first two questions:
1) have you read the book by Viet Thanh Nguyen and if so how did you end up reading it ? if you haven't read the book what is it that drew you or convinced you to watch the TV show ?
2) what has been your favourite performance in the show so far and why ??

@petrosapian I have finally managed to write you something resembling proper Gwengit fic. In a Kwarrel Lives AU because that’s just what worked for me at 1:30 in the morning.
~~
Groaning heartily, Gwen buried her face into her pillow and tried to will the past day away. Ben had busted his foot that evening and Kevin had decided that instead of a hospital he’d take them back to his home, where his bestfriend? foster brother? practiced healing magic. And it had worked, Ben was walking fine now- though he owed the guy twenty bucks and a pint of ice cream for the service- but it had also become immediately apparent that she and Argit just did not get along.
He’d made some comment about Ben not being allowed to die until he gave permission, Gwen had countered with a remark about the arrogance behind such an order, and the next forty minutes had gone directly downhill. Verbal jabs, mouthy comments, sharp words off sharper tongues. They’d managed to cover a broad range of topics in that time, from critiques of each other’s magical techniques to cultural relativity, several times having to be hushed lest they wake up the father Kevin apparently had now. It had, one might have been able to get her to admit, been a mental sparring session of the sort she didn’t get often. Normally she was limited by topic choices, how far she was willing to go, or verbal acuity, but not here. Argit had kept up, given as good as he got, and given her a real mental and verbal workout.
Too much of one, apparently, because now it was one in the morning and her brain was still buzzing about the altercation. About mouthy comments, snappy retorts, and easy insults. He’d had the audacity to insult her grandfather for getting them involved in the ongoing invasion plot! Nobody ever spoke of him in the tone he’d used! She could still hear him, clear as day, instructing Ben on how to keep from undoing all the work on his foot in between criticizing the local healthcare system and insinuating that they were too young to be involved in saving the world- like an alarm sounding in her head and down into her sternum. Driving her right up the wall.
Well, she’d just have to show him exactly what she was made of.

I respectfully disagree. I hate that they keep hiking subway prices, and I heartily wish they would charge us more in taxes to pay for the subway instead. The subway system is one of the great things about New York (I mean. compared to the public transit in the rest of the country) and it should be considered more like a public service. I'd strongly prefer it if all of us were subsidizing the MTA through our taxes (including all the rich people who don't use it), instead of paying cops to stand around and fine people for fare evasion. And I know that's a problem of how the budget gets made (police money isn't coming from the same bucket as train money) but it IS all coming out of my same paycheck. And it does suck when you go to buy your much-pricier monthly metrocard and see a bunch of cops standing around who are being paid tax dollars for nothing.
Like. idk. I know NYC taxes are high already, but I can't deny that it feels really bad to see those higher price tags daily on everything from groceries to metrocards to healthcare premiums.
If americans can't handle burger too expensive, I have doubts they'd be welcoming of universal healthcare, free colleges, public transport etc. considering all of these require higher taxes
We've literally seen that played out in polling and conversations about it. New Yorkers lost their fucking minds last year when MTA tickets went up to $2.90 from like $2.60 or $2.75

What are demographics like among different medical fields? I.e., are there certain specializations strongly associated with, say, a particularly conservative or liberal slant to their practicioners?
Hey there @108echoes . Thankee for the ask!
I’ll answer the “demographics” question first, mostly by gender. (Also, as a heads up, I’m going to talk about “male” and “female” as generalities; nonbinary and trans folk simply aren’t in medicine in enough numbers to start really counting. I know the trans community is under-counted, in medicine just like everywhere else, and I haven’t forgotten you guys, but this is based on the data I can find, which is strict M/F.)
Gender
Things differ specialty to specialty, but also job title to job title. For example, nursing is about 95% female (the 5% who are men are more likely to be supervisors and more likely to be paid better, because of course there’s sexism in “female” jobs too, why wouldn’t there be?), while surgery is overwhelmingly male. Physical therapy is mostly men, lab techs are a roughly even split, EMS is almost 50/50 (depending on the service), emergency medicine is fairly evenly split as well (maybe a touch more male than female). The “brainiac” specialties, like cardiology, neurology, etc. tend to be fairly evenly split, but perhaps more male-leaning, as I understand, but I could be wrong.
OB/GYN is overwhelmingly female, and male providers are actually looked at with suspicion. (Because all men want to violate women, right? Who said sexism can’t go both ways?) Family practice -- the general “doctor’s office” we think of -- is also skewed female.
Oh, by the way, regardless of rank or specialty, female providers tend to make less than their male coworkers. What, you thought medicine was equal?
Age, by the way, makes an enormous difference in demographics. More than 50% of doctors under 30 are female, while only 30% of doctors in the West are women. That means that the next 30 years are going to see some big gender divide shifts in healthcare, which I heartily welcome.
Politics
In terms of liberal vs conservative, I think it depends an awful lot on other factors, more so than what the person does for a living. That said, the overwhelming majority of OB/GYN docs that I’m aware of are in favor of abortion being legal and easily accessible. But that view isn’t  born of a liberal mindset; it’s born of a strong understanding of the science. You can be a conservative OB/GYN and still agree that, while you may not want to perform abortion or even think it’s morally right, that it should still be safe and legal.
Where someone comes from (and where they’re practicing, and where they trained) weigh heavily on their political views. A doctor who’s practicing in Dallas, for example, who was born in Seattle and trained in Baltimore will likely be a liberal, whereas someone who was born in Dallas, trained in Georgia, and is practicing in Milwaukee is likely to be a conservative.
Similarly, the institution where one works can be conservative or liberal, depending on a few things. Privately owned institutions tend to be more conservative and tight-fisted; public institutions tend to be a little more liberal. Catholic institutions won’t terminate pregnancies even for the health of the mother in some cases. Research hospitals might be either more conservative (more $) or more liberal (more sciency).
Any discussion of “conservative” and “liberal” will also have to talk about the fucked-up relationship between science and religion these days. Generally, science is on the side of the liberals; “scientific truth” should be a value not associated with politics, but given the way things are now, it’s a liberal value.
Archetypes
It’s easier to categorize the specialties by “mindsets” or personality archetypes. Neurologists tend to use the organ they study as much as they practice on it, they tend to be very technical, intelligent, and thoughtful. Orthopedic docs and surgeons in general are often the jocks of medicine (surgery in general is very “jocky” and something of a boy’s club). Emergency medicine and trauma surgery are both specialties that require a love of high adrenaline, and don’t necessarily require the biggest brain on the block. Internal medicine and ICUs are pretty much split down the middle.
Medicine is also very tribal. The specialty you’re in is the best specialty, dammit, the only worthwhile specialty. Everyone believes this no matter what.
There’s also a saying:
The emerge knows nothing and does nothing. Medicine knows everything and does nothing. Surgery knows nothing and does everything. And the ME knows everything and does everything, but is a bit too late to the party.
Again, these are archetypes and generalities.
I invite people from specialties outside of EMS to weigh in on this. Keep in mind that this whole response is based on quick Internet research and personal experiences.
Hope this helped!
xoxo, Aunt Scripty

All Life Is Sacred
Recently, our church family gathered to worship and pray on a Wednesday night. At the end of the service, I felt compelled to receive a spontaneous offering to purchase tactical safety gear for our local county deputies. The response was extraordinary as over $81,000 was given in just a few minutes, enough to fully outfit 58 officers with state of the art equipment designed to keep them safe during dangerous encounters.
We’re a pro-life congregation, meaning we believe all life is given to us by God and therefore, sacred. We support ministries that help the unborn, we operate a ministry empowering single moms to overcome poverty and homelessness and we help serve the poorest women in our city with professional and free healthcare. Because we’re pro-life, we also responded to the opportunity to help protect our deputies who don’t have proper equipment.
All life is sacred, therefore, any time we have the ability to preserve, defend or celebrate life, we heartily step into those opportunities. Our law enforcement community has the unenviable task of maintaining order in a world gone mad with violence. Just a few weeks ago, a young deputy, who has attended our church since he was teenager, lost his life needlessly after pulling over a suspect driving a stolen car. In an instant, Micah Flick lost his life and his wife and twins lost a husband and dad.
At his funeral, the County Sheriff told me over 150 of his deputies didn’t have the necessary gear to protect them from the most dangerous weapons. Our church heard and responded with the offering. Soon, we hope all the officers on our streets are protected.
I realize not everyone will agree with me about this issue. Many believe the church in America needs to be more vocal about gun violence and the easy access of military-grade weapons, especially those sold to people with mental health concerns. I agree that our voice and vote will matter profoundly on these issues. Let’s make every decision based on the right questions. What gives us life? What saves lives? What honors life? Does every life matter, regardless of citizenship, skin color or party affiliation?
Some of the choices ahead will be tough for our culture to embrace, but it’s time for life. Violence, racism, partisan hatred, and tribal fears are not bringing us life. The Holy Spirit is the Lord, the giver of life. The church is a gathered force filled with the Holy Spirit, so let’s breathe life on a culture that’s dying. Every time there’s a choice, let’s speak life, defend life and give our money for life.
That’s what happened at the end of a Wednesday night prayer meeting not long ago at New Life. We chose hope and life over fear. We’re not naive. We know the world is evil, but we’re now hopeful more deputies can go home at night after doing really dangerous work. We believe life has come to our city, if only in a small way.
