Enhancing Hearing with Quality Hearing Aids in Dublin
Hearing loss can significantly impact one's quality of life, but modern hearing aids Dublin offer a solution. In Dublin, there are various options for high-quality hearing aids to help individuals regain their hearing abilities. In this blog post, we'll explore the benefits of hearing aids, the different types available, and where to find reputable hearing aid providers in Dublin. Discover how hearing aids can transform your hearing experience and improve your overall well-being.
1. The Benefits of Hearing Aids :
Hearing aids provide numerous benefits to individuals with hearing loss. Here are some key advantages:
a) Improved Communication: Hearing aids amplify sounds, making it easier to hear and understand conversations. This improves communication and enhances relationships with friends, family, and colleagues.
b) Increased Confidence: Hearing loss can often lead to social isolation and decreased self-esteem. By wearing hearing aids, individuals regain their ability to actively participate in social activities and feel more confident in their interactions.
c) Enhanced Quality of Life: Hearing aids Dublin allow individuals to enjoy a richer and more fulfilling life. With improved hearing, they can engage in hobbies, enjoy music, and fully experience the sounds of their environment.
2. Types of Hearing Aids :
There are different types of hearing aids available, each catering to specific needs and preferences. Here are the main types:
a) Behind-the-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids: BTE hearing aids are worn behind the ear and are suitable for individuals with mild to severe hearing loss. They are known for their durability, versatility, and can accommodate various features and amplification levels.
b) In-the-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aids: ITE hearing aids are custom-made to fit within the ear. They are visible but offer a more discreet option compared to BTE models. ITE aids are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss and provide a comfortable fit.
c) Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) Hearing Aids: RIC hearing aids are similar to BTE aids but have a thin wire connecting the main body of the device to the receiver in the ear canal. They provide a natural sound experience and are suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss.
d) Completely-in-Canal (CIC) Hearing Aids: CIC hearing aids are the smallest and most discreet type, fitting entirely within the ear canal. They are custom-made and suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss. Due to their small size, they may have limited features and battery life.
3. Finding Hearing Aids in Dublin :
In Dublin, there are several reputable clinics and hearing aid providers offering a wide range of hearing aids. When seeking hearing aids, consider the following:
a) Consultation and Evaluation: Look for clinics that offer comprehensive consultations and evaluations to determine the best hearing aid for your specific needs.
b) Professional Expertise: Choose providers with experienced audiologists or hearing aid specialists who can guide you through the selection process and provide ongoing support.
c) After-Sales Services: Consider providers who offer after-sales services such as adjustments, maintenance, and repairs to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your hearing aids.
Hearing aids in Dublin provide an effective solution for individuals with hearing loss, enhancing communication, confidence, and overall quality of life. By seeking reputable providers and choosing the right type of hearing aid, you can regain your hearing abilities and enjoy a more fulfilling auditory experience.

I've almost reached my breaking point with this genocide in Ukraine. I'm older than most Tumblr users, so I was being yelled at in university tutorials in the early 00s for talking about the Holodomor, and being told that "If it happened, Ukrainians deserved it for being Nazis".
I was out there in 2007 when we had the worldwide march for the Holodomor to be recognised as a genocide, only for so many countries (the USA being one of them) to tell us that they won't do it because it might upset russia.
I remember when russia invaded in 2014 and Obama said it wasn't his business, and that russia can decide what happens in Ukraine. And then he sent Ukraine fucking helmets and "hygiene kits" instead of the military aid he was supposed to.
My family in Donetsk walked out of their homes with their lives packed in plastic shopping bags nearly eleven years ago. But people prefer to believe the russian lies that Donbas wants to be part of russia.
I remember sitting at home on the 17th of July 2014, hearing about russia shooting down MH17, and feeling my blood run cold because the initial reports said the aeroplane was full of Americans. Being so sure that the USA might finally live up to the Budapest Memorandum and get involved in the war.
Of course they didn't.
And then the Malaysians went and protested at the Ukrainian embassy, as if they were to blame for being invaded by their genocidal neighbour.
I remember being at a protest at the russian embassy in Canberra just after Crimea was annexed, and the only people who turned up for us were other Ukrainians. Soon after there were massive protests for Palestine and BLM from Melbourne to Dublin and beyond. Ukrainians are too white for leftists and too foreign for right-wingers to care about.
More people dumped buckets of ice on their heads than supported us.
I spent Easter 2016 in a hotel in Ukraine. 8.5 years ago I was the only guest who wasn't a soldier on leave from the war.
Now I go on reddit and see that Americans are discussing how Ukraine "has a neo-fascist problem". Um, you guys just voted for Donald fucking Trump?
Then I see an Australian journalist say that the US election result means that America is "becoming like Eastern Europe". No. Eastern Europeans aren't Nazis. They suffered more under the Nazis than anyone.
We're always on our own. Millions upon millions of Ukrainians have been killed in the last ninety years, millions more sold into slavery in Germany (including my grandparents), hundreds of thousands sent to gulags (including the entire population of my grandmother's village), and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of thousands dead or missing now, but we're still not seen as worthy of caring about.
I have family members whose dead bodies have been lying on battlefields for over a year. One killed in Bakhmut, a city that no longer exists. Another taken hostage from Mariupol, a city russia bombed to the ground. The mass graves there can be seen from space.
We can't get the bodies back because russia has colonised the area. I have a relative who was moved on from fighting in Vovchansk because there was no point fighting for another city that no longer exists. My relative who was taken hostage in Mariupol was starved and tortured for 2.5 years.
And then last week our city's magazine had a three-page interview with the russian ambassador, explaining why his country "has" to commit genocide in Ukraine. The editor laughed at my aunt when she phoned to register a complaint.
But teenaged tankies on sites like this will mock Ukrainians' deaths, stick a fucking hammer and sickle in their profile, and lecture people like me about things they know nothing about.
The world needs to end its ridiculous love affair with the russian federation.

Chapter Twenty-Nine
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jude doesn’t tell me about the email until we’re back in Dublin, and I don’t ask because there are other things to think about. Such as the gaping holes left in the shelves of the apartment now that Claire has taken all of her things away or the letter waiting from NCAD detailing my timetable for my first week back in September. How is September three weeks away already? I toss the envelope onto the kitchen table and sigh as I unfold the letter.
“Ugh, the thought of going back is so weird,” I say, “You know, like the idea of not being in Mezzotint anymore, of being back to regular classes again, cycling back to Thomas Street every morning. It feels like the kind of thing I did in a different life.”
Jude opens the fridge and takes out one of Claire’s abandoned peach yoghurts, and I eye him sharply as he does it, in two minds whether I should warn him to stay away from her things, which is nonsensical as it’s yoghurt and it expires on the 30th and she won’t be coming back from Sydney to get it anytime soon. “Is Mezzotint an option long-term?” He wonders, and I ask him what he means, “Like, if you wanted to stay on and work for them longer, do you think they’d let that happen?”
Tumblr media
“I can’t do that,” I grab a magnet and stick the timetable to the fridge door, “I have to finish college now, it’s the only way I’ll ever get a degree.”
“You can’t drop out?” He says casually.
“No, because of financial aid. They won’t ever fund my education again and I’ll never be able to afford a degree on my own.”
“Woah,” He says, “I didn’t know that. So this is your only shot.”
“Exactly. No pressure, like.”
“Lucky you picked something you like.”
“Yeah and I do like illustration, I think I’m good at it, but, ugh, NCAD, sometimes I just…”
“Judging by the way everyone goes crazy for your work, I’d say you’re more than good at it. I think your murals are the best ones I’ve seen.”
I feel self-conscious, “you’re saying that because you think you have to.”
“Never.”
Tumblr media
I start unzipping my weekend bag so I can put some of my dirty clothes into the washing machine. I find my dew soaked shoes to and put them on the windowsill to dry.
“I’m serious,” Jude is saying as he follows me around the room, “You could really do something with those skills, that’s why I was asking about Mezzotint, I just think that if you wanted to you could make a career out of designing in the way that you’re designing now. Windows, murals, that kind of thing.”
“Yeah, maybe someday.”
“Why does it have to be someday?”
“Because I… That’s just something I’ll do in the future, I don’t know.”
Tumblr media
“Evie, you’re so good, I swear you could do it right now.”
I sigh and toss a detergent pod into the drum, “Did you hear that bit I said about having to finish college?”
“I know,” he chews on his lip thoughtfully, “I know, you said that. I understand.”
“Why? What would you do if you were me?”
“I couldn’t say, our situations are different, so,”
“Yeah but if you were in my exact situation. Would you drop out of college and pursue illustration without a degree?”
He shrugs, “I might.”
I scoff, “Okay well, that’s not going to happen, so.”
Tumblr media
“I know, I was just saying that if I was literally you, I might make a decision like that. I’m not saying you should, I get what you’re talking about with the financial aid and all of that I…” he breaks off and I look over my shoulder to find a troubled expression on his face. I feel tension leave my shoulders and compassion take a hold of my heart.
“Is it the long distance?” I ask him, “Are you worried about how we’re going to do it?”
He scratches the back of his head and looks at the floor, “I dunno, I suppose honestly it freaks me out a bit.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, that’s okay,” I abandon the laundry and cross the room to hold his face in my hands, “it freaks me out too, but look, it won’t be that long, and by the time you get a job in London and actually manage to move over there it could be a couple more weeks or months, and really, by then I’ll only have maybe, six months left in NCAD, and there’ll be weeks during the midterm breaks when I can come and visit you, and really, it won’t be bad.”
“Yeah,” He says, still staring at the rug.
“We did a month apart when you were in Berlin,” I remind him, “and it was hard, but it was also fun, because we got to talk every night on the phone, and send texts and photos, and I learned all about the art of tasteful nudes and got to experience your colourful language detailing all the things you wish you were doing with me, and I think that if we can manage that then we can totally manage this.”
Tumblr media
“They were very tasteful nudes,” he concedes, and I laugh at the miserable way he decided to say this. I capture his chin between my thumb and forefinger so that I can tilt his face to mine. “Stop moping, there’s no need to get into a mood over something like this, you know, we’re strong people and we can-’
Tumblr media
“One of the movie studios in LA emailed me last night,” He says.
“Yeah, I remember,” I leave a long pause for him to fill, and when he doesn’t I ask him, “What did they say?”
“They liked my portfolio.”
“Was their advice any good?”
“They didn’t have any, they, uh,” a long pause, “have an internship programme, actually.”
Tumblr media
My stomach plummets to the floor. “Do they, yeah?”
“Yeah they told me that they’d like for me to come out to LA and work with them.”
“Oh,” My voice sounds a bit strangled, “so they really liked your work.”
“Guess so.”
“That’s really nice, wow. Nice to hear,” I shrug “…but it’s an internship.”
“Right.”
“So… not paid.”
“I imagine not.”
Tumblr media
“So that just doesn’t make sense then,” I turn around and start fiddling with the dials on the washing machine. “Like they can’t really expect you to do that, can they? Like, to work somewhere like that without giving you any money for it, a bit ridiculous, isn’t it?”
He says nothing.
“They can’t really compete with the kind of money you’d be getting in London at all, can they? I mean think about that. Fifty, sixty thousand pounds a year versus nothing. They can’t expect anyone to be interested in something like that, especially, you know, because to live somewhere like LA would be crazy expensive as I can imagine. Wow, what a ridiculous offer.”
“Evie, I don’t have a job in London yet, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to start talking like I do.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, yet,” for some reason I grab the hoover and start vacuuming up crumbs from the ground beneath the oven, “But you will, that place you were waiting on, they’ll get back to you soon.”
“Yeah, maybe they will, but…” he pauses again and I feel a flash of annoyance that takes me by surprise, “But what, like?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“What if I felt like the internship was too good to pass up? What if I didn’t want to take the risk of waiting for The Brits to hire me and I just considered another opportunity?”
“The other opportunity is really just not realistic,” I argue, “It makes no sense. It’s so far away from here and it won’t even pay you.”
“Yeah but I think it’s more exciting.”
I shake my head.
“I know that you’re being practical Evie, but there are ways to make this workable.”
“I can’t believe you’re saying this.”
Tumblr media
When I turn to him again Jude’s face looks a little wild, and I know immediately what that expression is. Passion. Excitement. Ridiculousness. Whatever is firing off in his brain is the same thing that drove him to cycle his bike like a maniac, crash a wedding party, kiss girls he should never have kissed. “Listen,” He says, “I really think this could be amazing, and I think it could work out, and we can still have everything we want and there’ll never be any compromises.”
“How? I’m going back to college and-”
“You weren’t excited to go,” he blurts out, “You saw that letter on the floor and you were upset to see it there. You don’t seem like you want to go back to NCAD, not really.”
“I-” I break off, “Well-”
Tumblr media
“I know how you feel about that place, I know the bad memories it has for you, and you don’t need to go back, I swear, you can just be an illustrator, that’s the beauty of being an artist, you don’t need a degree to be one, and look, if you don’t go back to college then you could come to LA with me and see if we like it, and if not we’ll try somewhere else. You wouldn’t have to live in Dublin, you wouldn’t have to find a new housemate for this apartment.”
“The money, Jude.”
“Who cares about the money?”
Tumblr media
“I feel like I’m going insane listening to you. I can’t just up and leave and move to America.” I turn away to scrub the kitchen sink and he moves to lean against a counter and wedge himself back into my eyeline.
“Well, you objectively can, so.”
“Jude…”
Tumblr media
He’s grinning now, “You think I’m crazy.”
“No, I think you’re passionate.”
“So are you.”
“Please…”
Tumblr media
“C’mon, don’t be upset, it’s just an idea,” He gently pulls me away from the sink and turns me to face him, and only when he’s holding me by the wrists do I realise I’ve begun trembling. He kisses one palm and then the other, “What is it?”
“I just feel like… this is a lot of information all at once, and a lot of new ideas are being put forward here, I don’t know what to think about it, and I’m worried that if I don’t want to drop out of college then you’re going to go to America anyway.”
“No,” He says, “No, there’s no ultimatum, listen, I know I’m saying all of this stuff right now, but no matter what happens I’ll put us first. The last thing I’m going to do is leave you behind. If you don’t want to go to LA then I don’t want to go either.” I can’t bear to look at his face when he says that in case I can detect a lie in it. “Evie,” tilting my face, “I love you. I love you so much. I don’t want to be anywhere if you’re not going to be nearby, you know that. If you want to stay here and finish college then that’s what you should do, and I’ll be right here with you as you do it.”
Tumblr media
“Alright,” and I kiss him, and keep kissing him, and he keeps kissing me back. “Can I have time to think about all of this?” I say when we come up for air, “You know, to really just get my head around it?”
“Yeah of course,” He says, “Whatever time you need.”
“Okay,” I wind my arms around his neck and kiss him even more as we forget about the whole conversation.

Very Sad to hear of the passing of Singer/Musician Sinéad O’Connor (1966-2023)
Sinéad O’Connor, the gifted Irish singer-songwriter who became a superstar in her mid-20s but was known as much for her private struggles and provocative actions as for her fierce and expressive music has died.
She was 56 years old.
Recognizable by her shaved head and elfin features, O’Connor began her career singing on the streets of Dublin and soon rose to international fame. She was a star from her 1987 debut album “The Lion and the Cobra” and became a sensation in 1990 with her cover of Prince’s ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U,”
“Nothing Compares 2 U” received three Grammy nominations and was the featured track off her acclaimed album “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” which helped lead Rolling Stone to name her Artist of the Year in 1991.
O’Connor made headlines in October 1992 when she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II while appearing live on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and denounced the church as the enemy.
In 1999, O’Connor caused uproar in Ireland when she became a priestess of the breakaway Latin Tridentine Church.
O’Connor was born on Dec. 8, 1966. As a teenager she spent time in a church-sponsored institution for girls, where a nun gave O’Connor her first guitar, and soon she sang and performed on the streets of Dublin.
Her performance with a local band caught the eye of a small record label, and, in 1987, O’Connor released “The Lion and the Cobra,” which sold hundreds of thousands of copies and featured the hit “Mandinka,” O’Connor, 20 years old and pregnant while making “Lion and the Cobra,” co-produced the album.
O’Connor’s other musical credits included the albums “Universal Mother” and “Faith and Courage,” a cover of Cole Porter’s “You Do Something to Me” from the AIDS fundraising album “Red Hot + Blue” and backing vocals on Peter Gabriel’s “Blood of Eden.” She received eight Grammy nominations overall and in 1991 won for best alternative musical performance.
O’Connor announced she was retiring from music in 2003, but she continued to record new material. Her most recent album was “ I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss,” released in 2014.
The singer married four times; and had four children: Jake, with her first husband John Reynolds; Roisin, with John Waters; Shane, with Donal Lunny; and Yeshua Bonadio, with Frank Bonadio.
My Condolences to her Family and Friends.

Did you hear about the far right fuckwits who burned out an encampment of migrants and asylum seekers in Dublin today? They even attacked the homless services coming to the aide. Fucking nazis on the streets of Dublin, with not a garda in sight.
I did. Shower of bastards.
At this rate I’d half expect the Gardai to either protect them, join in, or blame it on leftists (like Drew Harris did).
I was actually gonna ask you about it.

Happy birthday to the legendary Bono, the charismatic lead singer of U2! 🎉🎂
Bono, born Paul David Hewson, has captivated audiences around the world with his powerful vocals and passionate performances. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, he formed U2 in 1976 with his schoolmates Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr., and The Edge. Little did they know that they were embarking on a journey that would shape the landscape of rock music for decades to come.
Beyond his musical talent, Bono is also known for his deep-rooted religious beliefs. His faith has influenced both his personal life and his music, with spiritual themes often woven into U2's lyrics. Bono's devotion to his convictions has earned him admiration and respect from fans worldwide.
But Bono's impact extends far beyond the realm of music. He is a passionate advocate for human rights, using his platform to shed light on social and political issues. Bono's activism has been instrumental in addressing poverty, AIDS, and inequality, and he has worked closely with organizations like DATA and ONE Campaign to effect meaningful change.
Bono's nickname comes from friend and collaborator Gavin Friday who originally named him Bono Vox, which he didn't like at first. However, he came to accept it after he was told it came from the Latin word Bonavox, which meant good voice.  Bona Vox was also the name of a hearing-aid store near where they grew up
Now, let's talk about one of U2's biggest songs, "Bad." This track holds a special place in the hearts of fans for its introspective lyrics and raw emotion. "Bad" explores themes of addiction and the struggle to overcome personal demons. The live version from the album "Wide Awake in America" truly captures the essence of the song, showcasing U2's incredible energy and Bono's emotive delivery.
On this special day, let's celebrate the life and achievements of Bono, a true icon in the world of music and an inspirational figure in the fight for justice and equality.

Canada Wants to Regulate Online Content. Critics Say It Goes Too Far. (NYT) Canada has waded into the contentious issue of regulating online content with a sweeping proposal that would force technology companies to restrict and remove harmful material, especially posts involving children, that appears on their platforms. While the intent to better monitor online content has drawn widespread support, the bill has faced intense backlash over its attempt to regulate hate speech. Critics say the proposal crosses the line into censorship.
Michigan school shooter’s parents sentenced to 10 years in prison for not stopping a ‘runaway train’ (AP) The first parents convicted in a U.S. mass school shooting were sentenced to at least 10 years in prison Tuesday as a Michigan judge lamented missed opportunities that could have prevented their teenage son from possessing a gun and killing four students in 2021. “These convictions are not about poor parenting,” Oakland County Judge Cheryl Matthews said. “These convictions confirm repeated acts, or lack of acts, that could have halted an oncoming runaway train.” The hearing in a crowded, tense courtroom was the climax of an extraordinary effort to make others besides the 15-year-old attacker criminally responsible for a school shooting.
Biden says Netanyahu’s approach to the war is a mistake (AP) U.S. President Joe Biden called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war in Gaza a mistake and called for his government to flood Gaza with aid, ramping up pressure on Israel to reach a cease-fire and widening a rift between the two staunch allies that has worsened as the war has dragged on. Biden has been an outspoken supporter of Israel’s war against Hamas since the militant group launched a deadly assault on Oct. 7. But in recent weeks his patience with Netanyahu has appeared to be waning and his administration has taken a more stern line with Israel, rattling the countries’ decades-old alliance and deepening Israel’s international isolation over the war.
Medical care and supplies are scarce as gang violence chokes Haiti’s capital (AP) Fresh gunfire erupted Tuesday in downtown Port-au-Prince, forcing aid workers to halt urgently needed care for thousands of Haitians. Weeks of gang violence have forced some 18 hospitals to stop working and caused a shortage of medical supplies as Haiti’s biggest seaport and main international airport remain closed, warned aid workers with The Alliance for International Medical Action, a Senegal-based humanitarian organization. “The situation is really challenging and affects our movement on a daily basis,” said Antoine Maillard, the organization’s medical coordinator based in Port-au-Prince. The gang violence has driven about 17,000 people in the capital from their homes. Many are crammed into abandoned schools and other buildings where they often share a single toilet.
Colombia’s powerful former president set to become first to stand trial (Washington Post) Former president Álvaro Uribe, one of the most powerful leaders in Colombian history, is set to become the country’s first president to face a criminal trial, on charges of procedural fraud and bribery. Uribe, who served as Colombia’s president from 2002 to 2010, was once a wildly popular leader and U.S. ally whose iron-fist approach was credited with helping turn the tide of the longest-running civil conflict in the hemisphere. But for more than a decade, the former president has been enmeshed in a witness-tampering scandal in the country’s judicial system.
Ireland’s Youngest Ever Leader (NYT) Simon Harris was three years into a university degree when he dropped out in 2008. A job had come up as a parliamentary assistant to an Irish senator, and Mr. Harris, an ambitious 20-year-old from a coastal town in County Wicklow, south of Dublin, saw “an opportunity to try and make a difference,” he later told Hot Press, a Dublin-based magazine. He never looked back. On Tuesday afternoon, at 37, he became the Republic of Ireland’s youngest ever head of government, the culmination of a swift political rise to a post he has long aspired to. “He’s always been hungry for this role,” said David Farrell, a professor of politics at University College Dublin, noting that although Mr. Harris was young, he was not lacking in political experience. “His career has been short, but it’s been meteoric.”
Swiss press say ‘absurd’ European climate ruling could harm democracy (Reuters) Influential newspapers in Switzerland on Wednesday criticised a climate change ruling against the Swiss government by Europe’s top human rights court, saying it risked undermining democracy. Tuesday’s ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in favour of over 2,000 Swiss women who said Switzerland had not done enough to combat climate change is expected to embolden more people to bring climate cases against governments. Describing the ruling as “activist jurisprudence” that could pave the way for “all kinds of claims”, the center-right Neue Zuercher Zeitung (NZZ) newspaper said the elderly plaintiffs were ultimately pawns of environmental lobbies that used the court to circumvent democratic debate.
Tens of thousands evacuated in Russia, Kazakhstan amid worst floods in decades (AFP) Historic floods in Russia and Kazakhstan have forced tens of thousands from their homes. Fast-melting snow and ice has caused rivers that cross the two countries' border regions to surge, leading to the evacuation of more than 100,000 people. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry declared an emergency in the Orenburg region along the border, but citizens are still desperate and “calling for Putin’s help,” local media outlets report.
Ukraine races to fix and shield its power plants after Russian onslaught (Reuters) Russia began a second major assault on Ukraine’s energy system last month, devastating at least eight power plants and several dozen substations. Kyiv says Russia used more than 150 missiles and 240 attack drones in a single week from March 22—cutting off electricity, heating and even running water to 2 million Ukrainians, according to a parliamentary estimate. The intensity of the attacks, which have also targeted solar and hydro-electric power facilities, forced Kyiv to import power and sparked fears about the resilience of an energy system that was hobbled by a Russian air campaign in the war’s first winter. Russia has said the energy system is a legitimate military target and described last month’s attacks as “revenge strikes” to punish Ukraine for attacking Russian border regions.
Russia and China Double Down on Defying U.S. (WSJ) Russia and China have pledged to deepen their growing alliance and shared opposition to what they describe as the U.S.’s attempts to dominate the world order, with Moscow again seeking to boost trade with Beijing as it looks for new ways to bypass the Western sanctions imposed for its war on Ukraine. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday after the U.S. increased the volume of warnings that China should step back from helping the Russians pursue the war against their smaller neighbor. The meeting, which followed separate talks with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also came against a backdrop of a growing tussle for influence in the global south between the West on one hand, and China and Russia and their partners on the other. Lavrov criticized what he called the West’s proclivity for falling in behind Washington, and the U.S.’s attempts to get the rest of the world to follow the same line. “There is no place for dictatorship, hegemony, neocolonial and colonial practices, which are now being applied by the United States and all the rest of the collective West unquestioningly submitting to the will of Washington,” Lavrov said.
China's Xi says nobody can stop ‘family reunion’ with Taiwan (Reuters) Chinese President Xi Jinping told former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou on Wednesday that outside inference could not stop the “family reunion” between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, and that there are no issues that cannot be discussed. Since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war to Mao Zedong’s communists, no serving Taiwanese leader has visited China. Ma, president from 2008 to 2016, last year became the first former Taiwanese leader to visit China, and is now on his second trip to the country, at a time of simmering military tension across the strait. Meeting Ma in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, where foreign leaders normally hold talks with top Chinese officials, Xi said that people on both sides of the strait are Chinese. “External interference cannot stop the historical trend of reunion of the country and family,” Xi said, in comments reported by Taiwanese media.
Ankara’s pressure campaign (Foreign Policy) Turkey restricted exports to Israel on Tuesday, saying Ankara will only lift its curbs on trade once Israel and Hamas secure a cease-fire in Gaza and “the unhindered flow of sufficient humanitarian aid” is allowed to enter the enclave. The announcement impacts 54 product categories, including iron, steel, fertilizer, and aviation fuel. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the decision was made in response to Israel denying Turkey’s request late Monday to airdrop aid into Gaza. Ankara plans to maintain commercial ties with Israel. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz immediately condemned Turkey’s actions, accusing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of “once again sacrificing the economic interests of the people of Turkey for his support of Hamas.” Israel ordered its Foreign Ministry on Tuesday to prepare an “extensive list” of Turkish products to ban, and it said it would ask the United States and other allies to stop investing in Turkey and prevent imports from the country.
Israel threatens to strike Iran directly if Iran launches attack from its territory (AP) Israel’s foreign minister threatened Wednesday that its country’s forces would strike Iran directly if the Islamic Republic launched an attack from its territory against Israel, as tensions between the rival powers flare following the killings of Iranian generals in a blast at the Iranian consulate in Syria. The remarks came after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reiterated early Wednesday a promise to retaliate against Israel over the attack on its consulate in Damascus earlier this month. Tehran holds Israel responsible for the strike that leveled the building, killing 12 people. Israel has not acknowledged its involvement, though it has been bracing for an Iranian response to the attack, a significant escalation in their long-running shadow war.
Glasses Improve Income, Not Just Eyesight (NYT) If you’re 50 or older and reading this article, chances are you are wearing a pair of inexpensive reading glasses to correct your presbyopia, the age-related decline in vision that makes it progressively more difficult to see fine print and tiny objects. Eventually, everyone gets the condition. But for nearly a billion people in the developing world, reading glasses are a luxury that many cannot afford. According to the World Health Organization, the lack of access to corrective eyewear inhibits learning among young students, increases the likelihood of traffic accidents and forces millions of middle-age factory workers and farmers to leave the work force too early. Uncorrected presbyopia, not surprisingly, makes it harder for breadwinners to support their families. That’s the conclusion of a new study which found that garment workers, artisans and tailors in Bangladesh who were provided with free reading glasses experienced a 33 percent increase in income compared to those who were not given glasses.

From the 1995 press release of Shag Tobacco
Gavin Friday begins 1995 with one of the most startling and inspired albums you will hear all year, Shag Tobacco. Friday has created, with partner Maurice Seezer and producer Tim Simenon, a 21st century neon cabaret, where spirits of Leonard Cohen, Marc Bolan, Jacques Brel and Scott Walker collide in a vision of thirties Berlin decadence transposed to a Las Vegas of the future.
The unusual characters that inhabit this album are both real and imaginary: Mr. Pussy, the glamorous drag queen hostess, the living “Dolls” of New York’s nightlife, and glittering, androgynous “The Slider” (resurrected from the T-Rex back catalogue), meet the housewives from suburban hell and the star-crossed lovers of the title track.
“As we come to the end of the century, everything’s going ballistic,” notes Mr. Friday, “and a lot of stuff is being cleared out from under the carpet. When I went to work on this album, I had this thing of being obsessed with the Twenties, Thirties, and Forties, the fascinating, between-the-Wars era when decadence was tempered with darkness, and transporting that into the Nineties.
Mr Pussy who appears in person on the track written in his honor, is a major celebrity in Dublin A former friend of Judy Garland and Johnny Ray, Mr. Pussy was the hostess of Gavin’s own now-defunct cabaret cafe, the celebrated Mr. Pussy’s Cafe Deluxe a place where passing glitterati ate egg and chips and played bingo at three in the morning. “The cafe was very much a wedding banquet on acid vibe,” enthuses Friday, “It’s like a cross between a brothel and your granny’s bedroom. Really mad trannies went there, ones who looked like your da in drag; farmers in stilettos, mingling with your clubbers, your nighthawks and your down and out drunks.” But it’s not just the glamorous to whom Gavin turns his attentions on Shag Tobacco – real people also fill his music with their passions and their pain.
“Kitchen Sink Drama” documents the decline of a suburban housewife, who is “anaesthetized by mundanity, has given everything up for her husband and family and whose only companion is the ‘Angel’ Valium,” the author explains. “In the end she can’t cope, and the last line has her going out to “the sweet smell of butane.” And “The Last Song I’ll Ever Sing” is a tender but defiant paen to a friend who died of AIDS; “The biggest way you can get fucked over in love is to die of AIDS,” Friday points out. “The song is a tribute to the divas and crooners who have nothing to give except for the everything that they put into the last song they ever sing, and about the light that burns twice as brightly, burning half as long.” The album’s closing track, “Le Roi D’Amour,” meaning “The King Of Love,” is for Gavin, “like the grand finale, the curtain going up and the credits rolling.”
Not surprisingly, the singular Mr. Friday is dismissive of the moribund musical climate into which Shag Tobacco is being released. “Music is not a business,” he states, “it’s a way of life. The Virgin Prunes were me growing up in public, they were fueled by a lot of anger and frustration and I suppose I’m still an angry man – happily angry. Real music is when you don’t really know what you’re doing – it’s just your instincts at work. I love that. I love going in at the deep end and struggling and fighting and hopefully coming out… into the light.”

EOGHAN-SHEA | PINTEREST
FULL NAME eoghan-shea cassidy durnan (eoghan pronounced “owen”) BDAY august 30 AGE 29 GENDER cis male SEXUALITY demisexual PRONOUNS he/him
APPEARANCE
HEIGHT 6′1″  BODY TYPE muscular/slim PIERCINGS one ear TATTOOS his family crest on his rib, a celtic cross on his back
eoghan was a chubby kid, fallen victim to his mother’s baked goods.  of course he got teased for it…until he started beating up the boys who called him out of his name.  the teasing ended rather quickly.  it was the fighting followed by a major growth spurt that evened out his weight.  since his early teen years, he played soccer and kept up at the gym.  he’s no gym rat now, but he keeps himself in shape.
growing up in a mob family, eoghan was dubbed the pretty boy – sweet but deadly – once he became involved in his late teens.  he didn’t dress like the rest of his members, opting to blend into the more polite society.  he kept a clean shaven face and wore nice clothes, even to do dirty work. sure, eoghan was still a gangster no matter how he dressed, but it isn’t by choice.
PERSONALITY
MOR. ALIGNMENT true neutral MBTI enfj ZODIAC SIGN virgo
despite his inclination towards racketeering, murder, and other criminal activities, eoghan’s actually a sweetheart.  he only harms those who harm him, his family or his bottom line.  he’s charismatic, optimistic, and thoughtful.  he was a bit of a player in his teens and early twenties, mostly because he thought he was supposed to be.  lately, he’s been looking to settle down but is still very much flirtatious.
of course, he has his days.  he was raised by his father to be violent, to be tough.  he could have a bit of a temper, but he usually isolates himself during times like that.  due to head trauma at the age of 21, eoghan completely lost his hearing in his left ear.  hearing aids don’t help him much, so he sticks to reading lips when necessary or tilting his body towards the right so he can hear someone better.  he doesn’t do well in noisy environments because it’s hard to decipher where sounds are coming from.  he likes it quiet.  sometimes, he gets overwhelmed with his disability and that can cause quite a bit of frustration.
BACKSTORY
PLACE OF BIRTH brooklyn, ny ETHNCITY irish + african american
though he was born in the u.s., eoghan was raised as an only child to his mother, an artist from new york city, and his father, a lieutenant and soon to be leader in the irish mob, in dublin, ireland.  his father always traveled back and forth between the states and ireland for work, meeting with different factions.  he fell in love with eoghan’s mother and brought her back to ireland to make an honest woman out of her.  she was the sunshine to his grumpy, and eoghan took after both of them that way, mostly his mom.
his spent his childhood with his mother, watching her paint and cook and sew.  he was fascinated with her until his father inevitably dragged him away to do what he deemed more fitting for a young boy – sports, fishing, hunting.  eoghan took to drawing more than anything else; he had that natural inclination toward creativity.  he still paints today as a solace from all the violence and anxieties of his criminal life.  it’s more of a therapy than a hobby at this point.  he also enjoys baking, oddly enough, and that distracts him when his mind starts racing.  his father doesn’t know about that one.
during a raid from a rival gang, eoghan’s mother was killed in crossfire.  this was the same event that caused his hearing loss.  shortly after the tragedy, eoghan was sent new york to run the faction there.  he’s been doing well for himself there so far, and it was all thanks to his father.  he might have wound up dead trying to avenge his mother in ireland.  he’s managed to keep a cool head and a low profile, but he’s been yearning for a new purpose in life.  will he make it out alive?
