Plot armor but it’s Bruce Wayne’s wealth.
Bruce is one of the richest men in the world. Bruce does not want to be one of the richest men in world.
He starts by implementing high starting salaries and full health care coverages for all levels at Wayne Enterprises. This in vastly improves retention and worker productivity, and WE profits soar. He increases PTO, grants generous parental and family leave, funds diversity initiatives, boosts salaries again. WE is ranked “#1 worker-friendly corporation”, and productively and profits soar again.
Ok, so clearly investing his workers isn’t the profit-destroying doomed strategy his peers claim it is. Bruce is going to keep doing it obviously (his next initiative is to ensure all part-time and contractors get the same benefits and pay as full time employees), but he is going to have to find a different way to dump his money.
But you know what else is supposed to be prohibitively expensive? Green and ethical initiatives. Yes, Bruce can do that. He creates and fund a 10 year plan to covert all Wayne facilities to renewable energy. He overhauls all factories to employ the best environmentally friendly practices and technologies. He cuts contracts with all suppliers that engage in unethical employment practices and pays for other to upgrade their equipment and facilities to meet WE’s new environmental and safety requirements. He spares no expense.
Yeah, Wayne Enterprises is so successful that they spin off an entire new business arm focused on helping other companies convert to environmentally friendly and safe practices like they did in an efficient, cost effective, successful way.
Admittedly, investing in his own company was probably never going to be the best way to get rid of his wealth. He slashes his own salary to a pittance (god knows he has more money than he could possibly know what to do with already) and keeps investing the profits back into the workers, and WE keeps responding with nearly terrifying success.
So WE is a no-go, and Bruce now has numerous angry billionaires on his back because they’ve been claiming all these measures he’s implementing are too expensive to justify for decades and they’re finding it a little hard to keep the wool over everyone’s eyes when Idiot Softheart Bruice Wayne has money spilling out his ears. BUT Bruce can invest in Gotham. That’ll go well, right?
Gotham’s infrastructure is the OSHA anti-Christ and even what little is up to code is constantly getting destroyed by Rogue attacks. Surely THAT will be a money sink.
Except the only non-corrupt employer in Gotham city is….Wayne Enterprises. Or contractors or companies or businesses that somehow, in some way or other, feed back to WE. Paying wholesale for improvement to Gotham’s infrastructure somehow increases WE’s profits.
Bruce funds a full system overhaul of Gotham hospital (it’s not his fault the best administrative system software is WE—he looked), he sets up foundations and trusts for shelters, free clinics, schools, meal plans, day care, literally anything he can think of.
Gotham continues to be a shithole. Bruce Wayne continues to be richer than god against his Batman-ingrained will.
Oh, and Bruice Wayne is no longer viewed as solely a spoiled idiot nepo baby. The public responds by investing in WE and anything else he owns, and stop doing this, please.
Bruce sets up a foundation to pay the college tuition of every Gotham citizen who applies. It’s so successful that within 10 years, donations from previous recipients more than cover incoming need, and Bruce can’t even donate to his own charity.
But by this time, Bruce has children. If he can’t get rid of his wealth, he can at least distribute it, right?
Except Dick Grayson absolutely refuses to receive any of his money, won’t touch his trust fund, and in fact has never been so successful and creative with his hacking skills as he is in dumping the money BACK on Bruce. Jason died and won’t legally resurrect to take his trust fund. Tim has his own inherited wealth, refuses to inherit more, and in fact happily joins forces with Dick to hack accounts and return whatever money he tries to give them. Cass has no concept of monetary wealth and gives him panicked, overwhelmed eyes whenever he so much as implies offering more than $100 at once. Damian is showing worrying signs of following in his precious Richard’s footsteps, and Babs barely allows him to fund tech for the Clocktower. At least Steph lets him pay for her tuition and uses his credit card to buy unholy amounts of Batburger. But that is hardly a drop in the ocean of Bruce’s wealth. And she won’t even accept a trust fund of only one million.
Jason wins for best-worst child though because he currently runs a very lucrative crime empire. And although he pours the vast, vast majority of his profits back into Crime Alley, whenever he gets a little too rich for his tastes, he dumps the money on Bruce. At this point, Bruce almost wishes he was being used for money laundering because then he’s at least not have the money.
So children—generous, kindhearted, stubborn till the day they die the little shits, children—are also out.
Bruce was funding the Justice League. But then finances were leaked, and the public had an outcry over one man holding so much sway over the world’s superheroes (nevermind Bruce is one of those superheroes—but the public can’t know that). So Bruce had to do some fancy PR trickery, concede to a policy of not receiving a majority of funds from one individual, and significantly decrease his contributions because no one could match his donations.
At his wits end, Bruce hires a team of accounts to search through every crinkle and crevice of tax law to find what loopholes or shortcuts can be avoided in order to pay his damn taxes to the MAX.
The results are horrifying. According to the strictest definition of the law, the government owes him money.
Bruce burns the report, buries any evidence as deeply as he can, and organizes a foundation to lobby for FAR higher taxation of the upper class.
All this, and Wayne Enterprises is happily chugging along, churning profit, expanding into new markets, growing in the stock market, and trying to force the credit and proportionate compensation on their increasingly horrified CEO.
Bruce Wayne is one of the richest men in the world. Bruce Wayne will never not be one of the richest men in the world.
But by GOD is he trying.
#batman#bruce wayne#laws of this dc universe say Gotham is always a hellcity#and bruce wayne is always filthy rich#bruce wayne is fighting with everything he has against both those facts#he’s not going to win#but he’s not going to stop either#bruce crying with fistfuls of money in his hands: take it. PLEASE#the public: donate more???

Great Big Good Omens Graphic Novel Update
AKA A Visit From Bildad the Shuhite.
The past year or so has been one long visit from this guy, whereupon he smiteth my goats and burneth my crops, woe unto the woeful cartoonist.
Gaze upon the horror of Bildad the Shuhite.
You kind of have to be a Good Omens fan to get this joke, but trust me, it's hilarious.
Anyway, as a long time Good Omens novel fan, you may imagine how thrilled I was to get picked to adapt the graphic novel.
 Go me! Â
This is quite a task, I have to say, especially since I was originally going to just draw (and color) it, but I ended up writing the adaptation as well. Tricky to fit a 400 page novel into a 160-ish page graphic novel, especially when so much of the humor is dependent on the language, and not necessarily on the visuals.
Not complainin', just sayin'.
Anyway, I started out the gate like a herd of turtles, because  right away I got COVID which knocked me on my butt.Â
And COVID brain fog? That's a thing. I already struggle with brain fog due to autoimmune disease, and COVID made it worse.
Not complainin' just sayin'.
This set a few of the assignments on my plate back, which pushed starting Good Omens back.Â
But hey, big fat lead time! No worries!
Then my computer crawled toward the grave.
My trusty MAC Pro Tower was nearly 15 years old when its sturdy heart ground to a near-halt with daily crashes. I finally got around to doing some diagnostics; some of its little brain actions were at 5% functionality. I had no reliable backups.
There are so many issues with getting a new computer when you haven't had a new computer or peripherals in nearly fifteen years and all of your software, including your Photoshop program is fifteen years old.
At the time, I was still on rural internet...which means dial-up speed.
Whatever you have for internet in the city, roll that clock back to about 2001.
That's what I had. I not only had to replace almost all of my hardware but I had to load and update all programs at dial-up speed.
Welcome to my gigabyte hell.
The entire process of replacing the equipment and programs took weeks and then I had to relearn all the software.
All of this was super expensive in terms of money and time cost.
But I was not daunted! Nosirree!
I still had a huge lead time! I can do anything! I have an iron will!
And boy, howdy, I was going to need it.
At about the same time, a big fatcat quadrillionaire client who had hired me years ago to develop a big, major transmedia project for which I was paid almost entirely in stock, went bankrupt leaving everyone holding the bag, and taking a huge chunk of my future retirement fund with it.
I wrote a very snarky almost hilarious Patreon post about it, but am not entirely in a position to speak freely because I don't want to get sued. Even though I had to go to court over it, (and I had to do that over Zoom at dial-up speed,) I'm pretty sure I'll never get anything out of this drama, and neither will anyone else involved, except millionaire dude and his buddies who all walked away with huge multi-million dollar bonuses weeks before they declared bankruptcy, all the while claiming they would not declare bankruptcy.
Even the accountant got $250,000 a month to shut down the business, while creators got nothing.
That in itself was enough drama for the year, but we were only at February by that point, and with all those months left, 2023 had a lot more to throw at me.
Fresh from my return from my Society of Illustrators show, and a lovely time at MOCCA, it was time to face practical medical issues, health updates, screening, and the like. I did my adult duty and then went back to work hoping for no news, but still had a weird feeling there would be news.
I know everyone says that, but I mean it. I had a bad feeling.
Then there was news.
I was called back for tests and more tests. This took weeks. The ubiquitous biopsy looked, even to me staring at the screen in real time, like bad news.Â
It also hurt like a mofo after the anesthesia wore off. I wasn't expecting that.
Then I got the official bad news.
Cancer which runs in my family finally got me. Frankly, I was surprised I didn't get it sooner.
Stage 0, and treatment would likely be fast and complication-free. Face the peril, get it over with, and get back to work.Â
I requested surgery months in the future so I could finish Good Omens first, but my doc convinced me the risk of waiting was too great. Get it done now.
"You're really healthy," my doc said. Despite an auto-immune issue which plagues me, I am way healthier than the average schmoe of late middle age. She informed me I would not even need any chemo or radiation if I took care of this now.
So I canceled my appearance at San Diego Comic Con. I did not inform the Good Omens team of my issues right away, thinking this would not interfere with my work schedule, but I did contact my agent to inform her of the issue. I also contacted a lawyer to rewrite my will and make sure the team had access to my digital files in case there were complications.
Then I got back to work, and hoped for the best.
Eff this guy.
Before I could even plant my carcass on the surgery table, I got a massive case of ocular shingles.
I didn't even know there was such a thing.Â
There I was, minding my own business. I go to bed one night with a scratchy eye, and by 4 PM the next day, I was in the emergency room being told if I didn't get immediate specialist treatment, I was in big trouble.
I got transferred to another hospital and got all the scary details, with the extra horrid news that I could not possibly have cancer surgery until I was free of shingles, and if I did not follow a rather brutal treatment procedure - which meant super-painful  eye drops every half hour, twenty-four hours a day and daily hospital treatment - I could lose the eye entirely, or be blinded, or best case scenario, get permanent eye damage.
What was even funnier (yeah, hilarity) is the drops are so toxic if you don't use the medication just right, you can go blind anyway.
Hi Ho.
Ulcer is on the right. That big green blob.
I had just finished telling my cancer surgeon I did not even really care about getting cancer, was happy it was just stage zero, had no issues with scarring, wanted no reconstruction, all I cared about was my work.Â
Just cut it out and get me back to work.
And now I wondered if I was going to lose my ability to work anyway.
Shingles often accompanies cancer because of the stress on the immune system, and yeah, it's not pretty. This is me looking like all heck after I started to get better.
The first couple of weeks were pretty demoralizing as I expected a straight trajectory to wellness. But it was up and down all the way.Â
Some days I could not see out of either eye at all. The swelling was so bad that I had to reach around to my good eye to prop the lid open. Light sensitivity made seeing out of either eye almost impossible. Outdoors, even with sunglasses, I had to be led around by the hand.
I had an amazing doctor. I meticulously followed his instructions, and I think he was surprised I did. The treatment is really difficult, and if you don't do it just right no matter how painful it gets, you will be sorry.Â
To my amazement, after about a month, my doctor informed me I had no vision loss in the eye at all. "This never happens," he said.
I'd spent a couple of weeks there trying to learn to draw in the near-dark with one eye, and in the end, I got all my sight back.
I could no longer wear contact lenses (I don't really wear them anyway, unless I'm going to the movies,) would need hard core sun protection for awhile, and the neuralgia and sun sensitivity were likely to linger. But I could get back to work.
I have never been more grateful in my life.
Neuralgia sucks, by the way, I'm still dealing with it months later.
Anyway, I decided to finally go ahead and tell the Good Omens team what was going on, especially since this was all happening around the time the Kickstarter was gearing up.
Now that I was sure I'd passed the eye peril, and my surgery for Stage 0 was going to be no big deal, I figured all was a go. I was still pretty uncomfortable and weak, and my ideal deadline was blown, but with the book not coming out for more than a year, all would be OK. I quit a bunch of jobs I had lined up to start after Good Omens, since the project was going to run far longer than I'd planned.
Everybody on the team was super-nice, and I was pretty optimistic at this time. But work was going pretty slow during, as you may imagine.
But again...lots of lead time still left, go me.
Then I finally got my surgery.
Which was not as happy an experience as I had been hoping for.
My family said the doc came out of the operating room looking like she'd been pulled backwards through a pipe, She informed them the tumor which looked tiny on the scan was "...huge and her insides are a mess."
Which was super not fun news.
Eff this guy.
The tumor was hiding behind some dense tissue and cysts. After more tests, it was determined I'd need another surgery and was going to have to get further treatments after all.
The biopsy had been really painful, but the discomfort was gone after about a week, so no biggee. The second surgery was, weirdly, not as painful as the biopsy, but the fatigue was big time.
By then, the Good Omens Kickstarter had about run its course, and the record-breaker was both gratifying and a source of immense social pressure.
I'd already turned most of my social media over to an assistant, and I'm glad I did.
But the next surgery was what really kicked me on my keister.
All in all, they took out an area the size of a baseball. It was  hard to move and wiped me out for weeks and weeks. I could not take care of myself. I'd begun losing hair by this time anyway, and finally just lopped it off since it was too heavy for me to care for myself. The cut hides the bald spots pretty well.
After about a month, I got the go-ahead to travel to my show at the San Diego Comic Con Museum (which is running until the first week of April, BTW). I was very happy I had enough energy to do it. But as soon as I got back, I had to return to treatment.
Since I live way out in the country, going into the city to various hospitals and pharmacies was a real challenge. I made more than 100 trips last year, and a drive to the compounding pharmacy which produced the specialist eye medicine I could not get anywhere else was six hours alone.
Naturally, I wasn't getting anything done during this time.
But at least my main hospital is super swank.
The oncology treatment went smoothly, until it didn't. The feels don't hit you until the end. By then I was flattened.
So flattened that I was too weak to control myself, fell over, and smashed my face into some equipment.
Nearly tore off my damn nostril.
Eff this guy.
Anyway, it was a bad year.
Here's what went right.
I have a good health insurance policy. The final tally on my health care costs ended up being about $150,000. I paid about 18% of that, including insurance. I had a high deductible and some experimental medicine insurance didn't cover. I had savings, Â enough to cover the months I wasn't working, and my Patreon is also very supportive. So you didn't see me running a Gofundme or anything.
Thanks to everyone who ever bought one of my books.
No, none of that money was Good Omens Kickstarter money. I won't get most of my pay on that for months, which is just as well because it kept my taxes lower last year when I needed a break.
So, yay.
My nose is nearly healed. I opted out of plastic surgery, and it just sealed up by itself. I'll never be ready for my closeup, but who the hell cares.
I got to ring the bell.
I had a very, VERY hard time getting back to work, especially with regard to focus and concentration. My work hours dropped by over 2/3. I was so fractured and weak, time kept slipping away while I sat in the studio like a zombie. Most of the last six months were a wash.
I assumed focus issues were due (in part) to stress, so sought counseling. This seemed like a good idea at first, but when the counselor asked me to detail my issues with anxiety, I spent two weeks doing just that and getting way more anxious, which was not helpful.
After that I went EFF THIS NOISE, I want practical tools, not touchy feelies (no judgment on people who need touchy-feelies, I need a pragmatic solution and I need it now,) so tried using the body doubling focus group technique for concentration and deep work.
Within two weeks, I returned to normal work hours.
I got rural broadband, jumping me from dial up speed to 1 GB per second.
It's a miracle.
Massive doses of Vitamin D3 and K2. Yay.
The new computer works great.
The Kickstarter did so well, we got to expand the graphic novel to 200 pages. Double yay.
I'm running late, but everyone on the Good Omens team is super supportive. I don't know if I am going to make the book late or not, but if I do, well, it surely wasn't on purpose, and it won't be super late anyway. I still have months of lead time left.
I used to be something of a social media addict, but now I hardly ever even look at it, haven't been directly on some sites in over a year, and no longer miss it. It used to seem important and now doesn't.
More time for real life.
While I think the last year aged me about twenty years, I actually like me better with short hair. I'm keeping it.
OK. Rough year.Â
Not complainin', just sayin'.
Back to work on The Book.
And only a day left to vote for Good Omens, Neil Gaiman, and Sandman in the Comicscene Awards. Thanks.Â

On Saturday, an Associated Press investigation revealed that OpenAI's Whisper transcription tool creates fabricated text in medical and business settings despite warnings against such use. The AP interviewed more than 12 software engineers, developers, and researchers who found the model regularly invents text that speakers never said, a phenomenon often called a “confabulation” or “hallucination” in the AI field.
Upon its release in 2022, OpenAI claimed that Whisper approached “human level robustness” in audio transcription accuracy. However, a University of Michigan researcher told the AP that Whisper created false text in 80 percent of public meeting transcripts examined. Another developer, unnamed in the AP report, claimed to have found invented content in almost all of his 26,000 test transcriptions.
The fabrications pose particular risks in health care settings. Despite OpenAI’s warnings against using Whisper for “high-risk domains,” over 30,000 medical workers now use Whisper-based tools to transcribe patient visits, according to the AP report. The Mankato Clinic in Minnesota and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles are among 40 health systems using a Whisper-powered AI copilot service from medical tech company Nabla that is fine-tuned on medical terminology.
Nabla acknowledges that Whisper can confabulate, but it also reportedly erases original audio recordings “for data safety reasons.” This could cause additional issues, since doctors cannot verify accuracy against the source material. And deaf patients may be highly impacted by mistaken transcripts since they would have no way to know if medical transcript audio is accurate or not.
The potential problems with Whisper extend beyond health care. Researchers from Cornell University and the University of Virginia studied thousands of audio samples and found Whisper adding nonexistent violent content and racial commentary to neutral speech. They found that 1 percent of samples included “entire hallucinated phrases or sentences which did not exist in any form in the underlying audio” and that 38 percent of those included “explicit harms such as perpetuating violence, making up inaccurate associations, or implying false authority.”
In one case from the study cited by AP, when a speaker described “two other girls and one lady,” Whisper added fictional text specifying that they “were Black.” In another, the audio said, “He, the boy, was going to, I’m not sure exactly, take the umbrella.” Whisper transcribed it to, “He took a big piece of a cross, a teeny, small piece … I’m sure he didn’t have a terror knife so he killed a number of people.”
An OpenAI spokesperson told the AP that the company appreciates the researchers’ findings and that it actively studies how to reduce fabrications and incorporates feedback in updates to the model.
Why Whisper Confabulates
The key to Whisper’s unsuitability in high-risk domains comes from its propensity to sometimes confabulate, or plausibly make up, inaccurate outputs. The AP report says, "Researchers aren’t certain why Whisper and similar tools hallucinate," but that isn't true. We know exactly why Transformer-based AI models like Whisper behave this way.
Whisper is based on technology that is designed to predict the next most likely token (chunk of data) that should appear after a sequence of tokens provided by a user. In the case of ChatGPT, the input tokens come in the form of a text prompt. In the case of Whisper, the input is tokenized audio data.
The transcription output from Whisper is a prediction of what is most likely, not what is most accurate. Accuracy in Transformer-based outputs is typically proportional to the presence of relevant accurate data in the training dataset, but it is never guaranteed. If there is ever a case where there isn't enough contextual information in its neural network for Whisper to make an accurate prediction about how to transcribe a particular segment of audio, the model will fall back on what it “knows” about the relationships between sounds and words it has learned from its training data.
According to OpenAI in 2022, Whisper learned those statistical relationships from “680,000 hours of multilingual and multitask supervised data collected from the web.” But we now know a little more about the source. Given Whisper's well-known tendency to produce certain outputs like "thank you for watching," "like and subscribe," or "drop a comment in the section below" when provided silent or garbled inputs, it's likely that OpenAI trained Whisper on thousands of hours of captioned audio scraped from YouTube videos. (The researchers needed audio paired with existing captions to train the model.)
There's also a phenomenon called “overfitting” in AI models where information (in this case, text found in audio transcriptions) encountered more frequently in the training data is more likely to be reproduced in an output. In cases where Whisper encounters poor-quality audio in medical notes, the AI model will produce what its neural network predicts is the most likely output, even if it is incorrect. And the most likely output for any given YouTube video, since so many people say it, is “thanks for watching.”
In other cases, Whisper seems to draw on the context of the conversation to fill in what should come next, which can lead to problems because its training data could include racist commentary or inaccurate medical information. For example, if many examples of training data featured speakers saying the phrase “crimes by Black criminals,” when Whisper encounters a “crimes by [garbled audio] criminals” audio sample, it will be more likely to fill in the transcription with “Black."
In the original Whisper model card, OpenAI researchers wrote about this very phenomenon: "Because the models are trained in a weakly supervised manner using large-scale noisy data, the predictions may include texts that are not actually spoken in the audio input (i.e. hallucination). We hypothesize that this happens because, given their general knowledge of language, the models combine trying to predict the next word in audio with trying to transcribe the audio itself."
So in that sense, Whisper "knows" something about the content of what is being said and keeps track of the context of the conversation, which can lead to issues like the one where Whisper identified two women as being Black even though that information was not contained in the original audio. Theoretically, this erroneous scenario could be reduced by using a second AI model trained to pick out areas of confusing audio where the Whisper model is likely to confabulate and flag the transcript in that location, so a human could manually check those instances for accuracy later.
Clearly, OpenAI's advice not to use Whisper in high-risk domains, such as critical medical records, was a good one. But health care companies are constantly driven by a need to decrease costs by using seemingly "good enough" AI tools—as we've seen with Epic Systems using GPT-4 for medical records and UnitedHealth using a flawed AI model for insurance decisions. It's entirely possible that people are already suffering negative outcomes due to AI mistakes, and fixing them will likely involve some sort of regulation and certification of AI tools used in the medical field.

The Kids Aren't Alright
* ~ I'm sorry for making this ~ *
Doomers & Fatalism
Regardless of your age, you need a reason to move forward. You need hope. Yet, it's hard to find hope for teens and young adults.
Not a year goes by without an update on the planet's decline (at our hand), wealth is only feeling more unstable and unequally distributed, a pandemic destroyed any hope of sociability for some, and social media does more harm than good when it "connects" people.
There's no true community, nothing to take pride in, there's hardly motivation for ambition or wealth. Hell, we grow up being told we'll be a generation of renters, because it's a statistical improbability than any of us will EVER afford a home without working 3 jobs into our grave.
I can't speak for America, but I know my government haven't made any real effort to prevent renter's from taking that news and slowly inflating rent costs each month.
I'm a part of the generation that is thought to deal with the broadest range of mental health concerns; however, I'm also part of the generation that's most likely to be told to "deal with it," or "grow up," by the people perpetuating our suffering, or the peers that fell victim to toxic hustle culture— enabling the shitty circumstances.
When you start adulthood with so many problems that directly impact your life, most of which come at no fault of your own, you'd hope for help in addressing those matters, but it never comes.
We're told we're lazy, we don't try hard enough, and we've got it easy (which is a demonstrable lie). How is it any surprise we became hopeless doomers? At some point you just get the idea that we were destined to fail.
Threats of War
Now we're told to be ready for World War 3 and I'm struggling to understand why. What values am I defending? Why should I die for a country that doesn't care about me?
Sure, Ukraine and Palestine are in shitty situations, but saying that doesn't require me to do anything. Though they demonstrate something: the government will risk our lives for money, and turn a blind eye to genocide if it suits them.
All that matters is that we're made to feel like our interests align. They don't represent us. They represent themselves.
Don't get me wrong, I don't support either conflict, and I sympathise with the aforementioned nations; however, I am not willing to die for them— I don't think you are. So is it even fair for us to bother complaining? It's not like diplomacy has done a thing so far.
Whether we're roped into a war or not, it doesn't feel like we'd have a choice.
Hobbies and Corporations
Normally I'd propose finding an outlet for everything. I'm not sure that's ideal anymore. Commonplace hobbies like gaming, sports, martial arts, reading, and art, they require 3 things: time, motivation, and effort.
Thanks to hustle culture, holding 3 jobs, running a drop shipping business, and abandoning any meaningful social life is considered just enough and reasonable. That doesn't leave time for personal hobbies, entertainment, or time to actually live. A life like that is no life at all. You're an animal operating on the exclusive goal of survival. You're alive, but you're not living.
Among those of us too physically or mentally scarred to work like our peers, we compassionately took to pen and paper, or software and devices, writing stories, drawing and animating worlds, or making music.
I fear that pocket of joy is getting smaller. AI image generation has already impacted artists, AI voice recreations are already being used in place of some voice actors, and we've all seen the AI voice covers for songs— claiming "you don't need to learn to sing." It didn't take long for me to see "generative AI" being proposed as a source for track samples and stems in music production.
Considering such things, it's hard to motivate yourself to put your work out there. You struggle to justify spending time creating anything, and you're probably not ready to put the effort into producing enough algorithm optimised works per day. After all, no one will see it. No one cares.
That's how it feels.
Social Media
Maybe we still have digital spaces? Really. Are cespools like Twitter spaces you can enjoy? Even Tumblr is quite detached, with small accounts struggling to get so much as a couple likes— nevermind a reblog, and god forbid you get a comment or DM.
That's minor though, it's the relationships that bother me. The ability to lock someone out of your life, within 5 seconds, for the slightest of perceived infractions. You're sensitive and a snowflake if you need boundaries, and you're "rude" and "mean" when you're pushed too far for not establishing them.
You can join a fandom or community and run into those issues, but do you really need more trouble? Ive hung around with furries since I was 13 or 14. It wasn't a furry that SA'd me, and I've never been groomed. But as a child online, I was labelled as a dog fucking groomer (at 15), because I was in a furry community discord server. I don't like to think about how that made the young adult owner of the server feel.
Social media is good for "satirical trolls," who take pleasure in hurting as many people as they can, and then claiming it's OK because they're joking, and you should've known. Is it really worth the effort for anyone else? You know, us "normal people," not bogged down by million strong fanbases, actively managing parasocial relationships and morally questionable stalking.
Closing Statements
I'm not entirely sure why I wrote this post. I guess I'm just another girl crying on the internet when I should save it for the therapy I can't actually afford.
I want to be hopeful, to feel like there's something attainable to desire, or even just things to look forward to. It's been a long time since I woke up and felt there was a good reason to be awake or even alive.
Thanks,

The strongest, most expensive and secure system in the entire United States. Well, you never one to back down from a challenge. Especially to prove a man wrong. What happens when you actually succeed to hack into the Stark Tower systems? Will they find you?
Warnings: Angst, mention of mental health troubles (depression, anxiety, self-esteem, reader is unsure of themselves and if they belong), slight violence, blood, medical equipment.
Each chapter will have their own warnings. Your internet consumption is not my responsibility. Please read the warnings before deciding to proceed.
This is my first fanfiction so all comments/suggestions/advice is very welcome and appreciated! I’ll be making this into a series, but i’m not sure how many parts yet!
Series materlist
———————————————————————————-
You groan and you slam on your hands on your desk. You couldn’t believe these misogynistic men you had called friends. They were mocking you, claiming you will never be as good as they are, you’re just a woman they said. You laugh dryly as an idea sparks in your mind. You will prove to them that they are just men, and you are far better than they ever will be. They laughed as you told them that. Then, one user from the group chimes into the conversation:
“Prove it. Hack into Stark Tower.“ the screen read.
You stare at the screen. Stark Tower. The most expensive, expansive, and backed up software that existed in the entire United States.
As you were the only woman in that group, you laughed in their faces at the challenge and eagerly accepted.
You’ve never been more shocked, impressed and surprised in yourself and your abilities than the moment you had successfully breached all security firewalls from Stark Tower. You stared at the screen in disbelief and decided to play a little trick on Tony Stark just because you could.
You decided to not only look through all high security files (because, why not?), you wanted to piss off Tony Stark to prove to the almighty Iron Man-self made billionaire-philanthropist-playboy that he wasn’t the only one capable of mastering technology.
As you searched through the files, you decide to distract the Stark Tower online security team from blocking you out of the software by playing a little game.
You throw onto their screens the words “All work and no play makes Tony a dull boy” over and over again, line by line in bright red writing. You add on a song you created quickly blasting in the background in a deep computerized voice “You can’t catch me! You can’t catch me! Na Na Na Na Na Na!! ” with a clown dancing on the bottom screen. You added circus music for that extra slap in the face.
Okay, yes it was very petty and over the top but it was hilarious. You decide to indulge in your win as you made a bowl of icecream, laughing at how easily you breached THE Tony Stark’s software system. You’re dancing around you kitchen when your front door blasts open. You scream and stare at disbelief. What just happened?!
And then you see Iron Man marching into your home.
Fuck. How did they find you?! Impossible, you had taken every measure to ensure your location and IP address could not be pinged and traced.
You sprint to your backdoor only to run into a very hard and muscular chest. You look up and see James Buchanan Barnes, the Winter Soldier, smirking at you with amusement
“Where are you going, doll? We just want to talk.”
As your panicking you decide the best thing to do is punch the soldier in the face…. or attempt to… as he catches your hand with ease and stares at you.
“Nice try, that was cute.”
You yank your arm away and look around you, surrounded by the Avengers.
Your brain starts racking through the possible escape routes but nothing works as you’re surrounded by the strongest and best team of soldiers and superheroes. And then you remember the reason why they’re here in the first place. You start laughing and the Avengers stare at you, confused.
Tony walks up to you “You think this is funny? You hacked into MY system! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! Are you some kind of witch? AND you have the AUDACITY to call me dull! With a dancing clown! really?!”
You keep giggling and you stare right into his eyes with determination. You’re not afraid, you’re amused.
“I was bored.” you shrug your shoulders.
“it was too easy. Why wouldn’t i fuck around with the supposedly impenetrable Stark Tower system? Not so much the almighty Tony Stark now, are you? Beaten by a random woman in her basement.” you keep laughing.
Tony stares you down, clenching and unclenching his fists. Captain America appears behind him, all eyes turn to the Captain, as he grabs Tony’s shoulder, silently warning him not to do anything stupid.
“Oh fuck off Steve!” Tony tells.
“Just because your ego is hurt doesn’t mean you can just threaten or intimidate her.” Steve replies coolly.
“Yeah Tony, it’s not her fault your system is shit.” Bucky snickers. Natasha slaps him behind his head and Sam slaps his shoulder.
They all turn around to face you once more but you’re gone. They all freeze.
“What the - Where is she?! You guys let her escape?!” Tony screams.
They all scramble to capture you. Sam jumps to the sky to fly over and get a better view. Natasha, Steve and Bucky split up in all directions to search. Tony remains in your kitchen, baffled, embarrassed and angry.
You’re running for your life. You can’t believe you managed to slip past the freaking Avengers while they were bickering with each other. You made yourself small and quiet and crept out through a small door under your stairs, thanking all the stars that you never had it sealed as per your friend’s suggestions.
You’re sprinting down the street, weaving between alleys and trying to stay low and unnoticed.
You dare to look behind you when your yanked from your arm and fall forward, tumbling and wrestling the body that just tackled you.
It’s no use. You’re not strong enough, not trained for this. You’re just a computer nerd that hides in her basement.
You’re pinned to the ground and look up at your captor. James Buchanan Barnes. Of course.
His striking blue eyes staring down into yours. Swirling with emotions that you can’t decipher. Is he mad? annoyed? you swear you see something in his face that looks like he’s amused?
Suddenly he’s smirking as your struggling beneath him to get out from his grasp.
“Stop moving so much. It won’t do anything.” He says blankly. Chuckling that you’re willful enough to try.
“GAAAHHH NO! I will NOT be caught and sent to god knows what fucking shit hole prison. GET OFF OF ME!!” you scream and kick your feet, wiggling beneath him.
He sighs and stares you down. “I’m sorry, this is gonna hurt.”
You look up at him “What are you-” then everything goes black.
——————————————————————————-
You wake up with a pounding headache. You opens your eyes to blinding lights and beeping sounds. It takes you a moment to remember what happened and realize what’s going on.
You successfully breached Tony Stark’s tower. You were captured by Bucky. Damn him and his beautiful eyes and strong body. You stop yourself mid-thought and shake your head- He captured you, you idiot. Don’t think like that. You groan as you sit up.
You look around you and start panicking, you can’t be trapped, you can’t live like this.
Your heart rate picks up on the monitor and it starts beeping wildly. You’re groaning and kicking. Your arms are strapped down to the gurney. You start freaking out even more and manage to get one hand out of the straps. You start undoing the other one and then you rip out the IV in your arm.
You’re freaking out, terrified of what they did to you, what did they give you? what will they do to you? You jump out of the bed and grab whatever medical utensils you find to protect yourself. The monitors continuously scream and beep, you’re struggling to figure out what to do when Tony, Steve and Bucky run into the room.
“GET AWAY FROM ME!” you scream and hold a medical scalpel out to them. Attempting to appear as threatening as possible. Rather, you look like a terrified cornered animal. You’re shaking, your head is pounding, you can’t focus, you just need to get out.
“Hey hey slow down, you’re okay….” Steve coos as he tries to slowly approach you.
You stick the scalpel in his direction.
“Don’t you dare come closer! Leave me alone!” you yell at him.
“Okay, we can figure this out, just put the scalpel down okay? Look at your arm, you’re bleeding, you ripped the IV out. Please sit down and let Bruce take a look at it.” Steve says to you, hand in the air to prove to you he is no threat, as he slowly continues to approach you.
You hadn’t realized as you were focused on Steve, that Bucky had rounded the room and was now behind you.
You look down at your arm, confused, scared. Your arm has a gash from the middle of your elbow down your forearm. It’s bleeding a lot, blood is dripping down your clothes and forming a small puddle on the ground.
You lift your arm to inspect and start panicking. Your eyes wild and you take in everything and realize you’re trapped, you’re hurt, you’re scared.
Then you feel Bucky’s arm wrapped around you and force the scalpel out of your hand.
“NO! NO! AHHHHH” you scream and thrash against him.
Tony takes the chance to inject you with a calming medication to soothe your panic attack and settle you back down. You start to grow woozy in Bucky’s arms and you slowly get weaker and more tired. They help place you back into bed and you’re repeating slowly and quietly “no please, just let me go”.
You fall into a deep sleep.
“Well she’s a spit fire. A lot more spunk than I expected.” Bucky says with a chuckle. “I like her.”
Steve and Tony roll their eyes.
“You like her because she beat me at my own game.” Tony says to Bucky and Bucky chuckles back at him and shrugs.
“Call Bruce, have him look her over again, make sure she’s okay and have him administer small doses of that calming medication so when she wakes up we can actually talk to her without her freaking out. Tony, find out what you can about her. Her name, family, history, everything. We need to know who we’re dealing with and assess if she’s a threat.” Steve says and walks out the door. The other two men follow. Bucky looks behind him one last time and stares your sleeping form.
———————————————————————————
You slowly wake up again to the feeling of something tugging on your arm. You groan and look over. You see a man with scruffy beard and hair stitching up your arm. Your heart rate monitor starts to beep faster which causes the doctor to look up at you.
“You’re awake. I’m Dr. Banner. I’m just patching up your cut here, it’s not too deep but please be careful.” He says as he looks at you pointedly.
You stare back and croak “Where am i? What are you going to do to me?” You feel a small tear slip from your eyes.
“Relax, please. We will not and have not hurt you. We just want to get to know you. It’s the first time anyone has beaten Tony when it comes to technology. You’re in Stark Tower, the Avengers compound. I know Steve and Bucky can appear menacing but they’re harmless, I promise.” Dr. Banner says to you softly.
You don’t know why but you believe him. He calms you.
“Alright, you’re all clean here. I’ll let you get changed and you can meet me right outside the door and i’ll guide you to the kitchen okay? Take your time.” He taps your hand lightly and walks away, offering you a tight smile.
You get up slowly and take in your surroundings and the situation. You see a pile of clothes folded for you but they aren’t yours. Confused, you look around and find your own in a laundry basket, bloodied and dirty. You sigh and put on the clothes provided, albeit the shirt is slightly tight around your waist and breasts and the leggings curve your butt nicely.
You look at yourself in the mirror and sigh. What is going on?
Dr. Banner knocks at the door, you walk out and follow him to the kitchen. Your head held high, refusing to show any fear.
As you enter the kitchen, the entire Avengers team turns and looks at you.
Your confidence quickly wavers when you make eye contact with a certain dark haired blue eyed soldier. He stares you up and down and you look down at the floor meekly. Bruce guides you to a chair and beckons for you to sit. You plop down and stare at your hands.
“Please, don’t be scared. We looked into who you are. We can’t find anything about your past. There are no medical or dental records. You’re a ghost. All we have is your name. How is that possible?” Steve says as the group stares at you.
You look up but say nothing. Steve sighs. He didn’t expect you to immediately spill your life story to them but he was hopeful it would be that easy. He decides to pull the bandaid off and tell you why you’re here.
“We’ve discussed this at length and we have a proposition to make. As you are extremely talented, we believe you would be a significant asset to the team. You can use your knowledge and expertise to help us complete missions more easily by hacking into the systems for us. We decided we can’t have you living out in the world without supervision. If you’re capable of breaking through Tony’s systems, you’re too powerful in this modern world. We would like you to join the team. What do you think?” Steve explains.
You stare at him. Your jaw slack. You look between them all. It takes you a second to register what he just said to you.
“So that’s it? You’re not going to kill me?”
The team chucked. “No hun, we don’t do that. We’re honestly just so impressed by you and want you to be a part of our team.” Wanda says to you softly.
You stare at them all. Registering what they asked of you. “This isn’t a choice. I either join the team, or what? You send me to some deep dark prison god knows where?! Seems like it’s either join the avengers or live a miserable life alone and imprisoned.”
“They are one and the same to me, a cage is a cage. No matter how pretty you paint it to be.” You say dryly. Looking up at the ceiling and sighing.
You pause. “I’d rather be here with some freedom than be in an actual cell. I accept the offer on one condition.”
They look at you expectantly.
“Never ask me about my past. I remain a ghost. I remain hidden. I do not join you on missions. I am to be left alone at my own will, within these grounds. I will be a prisoner to your cause but i will not be caged like an animal. I want my freedom.” You say to Steve as you stare at him making direct eye contact.
“Deal. Welcome to the team.” He says and reaches out to shake your hand. You shake it and pull back.
You feel eyes on you and find who they belong to. Bucky. He stares at you and you fake a cough to clear your throat and distract from his prying stare.
Tony gets up and tells you to follow him. He shows you to your room. It is directly across from Bucky, and stationed between Steve and Natasha. A security measure for sure. You can’t escape them.
Tony lets you into your room and tells you that he has prepared your own station and office to work from. Of course, your actions will be heavily monitored.
He watches you sit down as you find your belongings already in the room. You realize there was never a choice after all. They had decided for you. You never had the chance to decide your own fate, you were trapped.
Tony slowly closes your door and you sit on your bed, staring at the wall. Processing what just happened and not understanding why you can’t get those striking blue eyes out of your head.

Overcoming the Complexities: Navigating the Challenges in Behavioral Health Billing
As the demand for mental health and substance abuse treatment services continues to rise, so does the need for efficient behavioral health billing services. Managing the intricacies of medical billing and coding for behavioral health requires specialized knowledge, from navigating complex regulations to understanding insurance policies and coverage limits. The delicate nature of mental health care and the constantly evolving healthcare landscape make the billing process challenging. Ensuring accuracy in claims submission and maximizing reimbursement through claims management services are crucial steps in maintaining a healthy revenue cycle management system for providers. Let’s explore the common challenges faced in behavioral health billing and strategies to overcome them.
Complex Medical Billing and Coding Requirements
One of the greatest challenges in behavioral health billing services is mastering the intricacies of medical billing and coding specific to mental health services. Unlike general medical billing, behavioral health codes must account for different treatment approaches, therapy sessions, group counseling, substance abuse treatments, and medication management. Each of these services requires the application of accurate CPT and ICD-10 codes to ensure proper billing.
Errors in coding can lead to claim rejections or underpayment, slowing down the provider’s cash flow. The complexity is further compounded by frequent changes in coding guidelines and payer-specific rules, creating the need for continual updates and staff training. Providers must maintain thorough documentation to support each service billed, ensuring that the codes assigned reflect the specific treatments delivered.
 Frequent Claim Denials and Rejections
Mental health billing tends to face a higher rate of claim denials compared to other specialties. This is often due to the nuanced nature of behavioral health services, which can be subject to varying interpretations by insurance companies. Many insurance plans impose limits on the number of therapy sessions, types of treatments, or length of care, which can result in claim denials if not managed properly.
In such cases, denial management services play a critical role. Providers must implement robust systems for tracking claims and responding promptly to denials. Understanding the reasons for denials—whether it's due to incorrect coding, missing documentation, or authorization issues—is the first step toward correcting and resubmitting claims. A well-organized claims management services process can drastically reduce the rate of denied claims and improve overall reimbursement.
 Navigating Insurance and Authorization Requirements
Insurance companies often impose strict requirements for behavioral health services, including prior authorizations and stringent medical necessity criteria. Verifying a patient’s insurance benefits and securing prior authorization before treatment begins is vital. However, this process can be time-consuming and complex, requiring constant communication with insurance providers.
Missteps in securing authorization or failing to meet insurance company criteria can lead to non-payment for services rendered. Providers must ensure that their revenue cycle management process includes a solid verification and authorization system to avoid unnecessary delays in payment. A dedicated team or service for handling prior authorizations can streamline this process, ensuring services are approved before they are delivered.
Balancing Regulatory Compliance and Patient Privacy
Compliance is another significant hurdle in behavioral health billing. Providers must adhere to strict privacy regulations, such as HIPAA, while also ensuring their billing practices comply with federal and state laws, including the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). This act mandates that mental health and substance abuse treatments be covered at the same level as physical health services, but navigating its application in different insurance plans can be challenging.
Moreover, maintaining compliance with government programs such as Medicaid and Medicare introduces additional layers of complexity. Providers participating in these programs must follow specific coding and billing guidelines, often requiring additional documentation. Failure to comply can result in audits, fines, or loss of program participation, making it crucial for providers to stay up-to-date on regulatory changes.
The Importance of Streamlined Revenue Cycle Management
Effective revenue cycle management is the backbone of any successful behavioral health practice. Managing the entire billing cycle—from patient intake and insurance verification to claims submission, payment posting, and denial resolution—requires a streamlined process to prevent cash flow disruptions. Behavioral health billing services must ensure that every step of the billing process is optimized for efficiency and accuracy.
Outsourcing these tasks to a professional billing service can alleviate many of the challenges mentioned above. A specialized billing partner can offer dedicated claims management services and denial management services, ensuring that claims are submitted accurately and promptly, denials are swiftly addressed, and reimbursement is maximized. This allows providers to focus on delivering high-quality care to their patients rather than spending time navigating the billing process.
Conclusion
In the ever-evolving field of behavioral health, the billing process presents unique and complex challenges. From mastering the nuances of medical billing and coding to managing frequent claim denials and staying compliant with regulatory requirements, providers face a host of obstacles that can affect their financial health. However, with the right strategies—such as investing in professional behavioral health billing services, utilizing denial management services, and maintaining efficient revenue cycle management—behavioral health providers can overcome these challenges, ensuring their practice remains financially healthy while delivering essential care to their patients.
By implementing these solutions, providers not only reduce the administrative burden but also improve their bottom line, allowing for more time and resources to be devoted to what truly matters: patient care.

My younger brother claims to do OSINT for the Navy and have the highest military clearance possible. When I suspected he was lying to me about my father’s estate lawsuit, I decided to first test his capabilities. I mentioned a bunch of classified information I knew about that has been getting released recently, and his reaction was that of one in a state of shock or disbelief. He went completely mute on that subject. Next I tested his OSINT capabilities. As I know that the Navy has him using software for OSINT, I performed a full OSINT investigation on my old shady landlord, finding his family that lives in Switzerland and Europe, finding his ties to a land trust that has changed hands 3 times between different people with his last name, and different people with what looked like a name an Ashkenazi Jew would make up. Then I tied him as having a personal relationship with a lawyer who changed his name after getting out of prison in Washington State for a violent rape conviction. A lawyer that Multnomah County Court uses to perform court duties, even though he is a private lawyer with his own private office. I accomplished all of this in less than 2 hours without any OSINT software. My brother responding with a state of childish anger, and proceeded to encourage my mother to report me to DHS for posting a threat to mail anthrax to Oak Ridge National Laboratory or something of that nature. Only there was no such post on Reddit, and the DHS she reported this to was actually the Tennessee Department of Safety pretending to be DHS by leaving out the part where they were only affiliated with the state of Tennessee when introducing themselves. All this resulted in was two really dumb sloppy looking behavioral health PPB officers knocking on my door and listening to me give them a 30 minute lecture on psychology that they clearly could not follow even after claiming to have an education in psychology. My brother makes enough money from the military to have already have bought his own house, all while clearly not being able to perform his actual job, while I live in a 400 sq. ft. apartment with my partner; barely able to afford food and bills. Safe to say, that despite already owning his own home, he was also lying about my father’s estate lawsuit, I can only assume in an attempt to somehow gain hold of my portion of our father’s estate, I guess because he thinks me posting something about anthrax on Reddit (a post that didn’t exist), would be relevant to a county level estate case, and sufficient for me to be deemed not eligible to receive my allotted half of the estate. I feel like the entirety of these actions reaches beyond stupidity, and into the territory of malevolent insanity. Obviously, the government does not want competent and sane people working for them, for whatever reason. It has now been almost 3 years since the estate case was opened up and I have yet to hear anything more about it.

Childhood was half a memory even before Midas had lost everything. He was stuck inside a lot, sometimes unable to leave the hospital bed on his own. His father was always there, as his caretaker and support. Some days were good, almost normal. Other days there wasn’t much more Hesopher could do other than cradle Midas in a ball as he sobbed, waiting for the painkillers to dull the ache. Midas had taken to more mild hobbies because of it. A lot of books were borrowed, puzzles created for him as he got bored of the others being too easy. Time spent on his dad’s lap watching him program very simple software had piqued Midas’ interest when he was a toddler, and being confined to bed rest often had only nurtured his soon insatiable interest. Hesopher often found broken machines dismantled in Midas’ room, only to be reassembled sometime later into something functioning, but often scraped together into another purpose.
It was from Midas that the idea had come. A twelve year old boy absorbing the contents of a huge book as though it could provide more nutrients for his thin body than the sandwich he was absently nibbling out of obedience and not desire.
“Hey Dad?” Midas called, finally willing the courage to ask.
“Hmm?” Hesopher hummed, looking over from his computer to give his son his full attention. He often worked in the same room, just to be there when he was needed as well as unable to let a single moment go just in case Midas wouldn’t be there much longer.
“What if…,” Midas started, pausing to chew his lip gently before hesitantly continuing as he looked to his dad. “What if I became a cyborg? Wouldn’t that cure me?”
The question stunned Hesopher into silence, all of the warnings and condemnation associated with the brand flooding into his mind along with a distinct unwillingness to ever let his son be associated with the stigma. But he wasn’t stupid. He hadn’t thought of it before, but it actually made perfect sense. Replace the bones that housed the faulty blood. A nanite system to monitor his son’s health and help stabilize it. Take all the technology keeping Midas alive, make most of it microscopic, and put it inside Midas’ body. It sounded like a terrifying wish granted by mythical fae.
Hesopher found himself unable to respond, and Midas took that as a suggestion that his idea might be considered. “Leukemia is listed as one of the cancers they were able to cure in the past,” he spoke, voice cautious as he was expecting the same reaction he’d heard so many times before from other people. Don’t ever talk about cyborgs. Don’t even mention that accursed practice. Cyborgs were the reason the world was the way it is now. Broken, barren, stripped of humanity like the machines that had made it that way. But with what he knew, and with half his life being taken from him already, Midas was starting to feel it would be better to be called a monster than unable to get out of bed on his own, and held the book he was reading up to the page that proved his claim.
“But…,” Hesopher finally found his voice again, and it was void of any anger. Just a mix of fear and extremely hesitant hope. “The cyborgs all went berserk. It’s not a stable state of being,” he reluctantly repeated history, sliding the wheeled chair over to the bedside to show that he wasn’t opposed to the conversation. He just didn’t see how it could work without cursing his son to madness.
Midas took that as encouragement to continue, drawing a breath bubbling in excitement. “That’s just it though. Machines can’t go berserk. It’s impossible. You know that. You know just how stupid computers really are. How many times have we both been cursing at how dumb the computer is just because we forgot to tell it to do, or not to do something that humans intuitively figure out on their own?” Midas scooted closer to his dad, the blood transfusion tube connected to him today following and his foot nudging one of the recent projects on the bed. “You see it, don’t you? Machines can only do what they’re programmed to do. What humans tell them to do. The cyborgs didn’t just randomly go berserk, someone programmed them to do it.”
It was true. Hesopher had never really thought about it considering cybernetic study was practically taboo now, and the events of history had happened more than a hundred years ago. But what Midas said made sense. Horrifying sense, but sense nonetheless. The idea that someone had programmed the cyborg apocalypse made more sense to Hesopher’s mind than the historically carried idea that it had just happened like some sort of machine uprising.
His silence only encouraged Midas to continue, repeating his argument and addressing additional concerns as they came up.Â
“Machines can only do what humans tell them to. What they’re programmed to do. So someone had to program the berserk virus. Humanity’s greatest predator is still ourselves.” Midas paused only to flip back to a previous page in the book, showing the section about how each cyborg in the past had been given a unique 2400 character passcode that had to be used when they were getting any maintenance. “ In the past, cybernetic components were still left open to a network to allow for maintenance. They had an in that any hacker that was angry enough could have easily gotten into, especially since they kept all the codes in one place, since it was the same company that monopolized cybernetic implants. But there’s two cyborgs that are well known to have never gone berserk, despite being in the middle of them constantly.”
Hesopher paid attention as his son showed him another page, realizing that this had been something Midas had spent a lot of time thinking about before today, the faces of the two cyborg war heroes printed on the page speaking of their unique cases. “...They somehow ended up with hermetic codes,” Hesopher repeated the historically accepted consensus for why those two heroes were immune to the berserker virus. “But no one knows how to recreate them. Humans are too unique and varied, no one can figure out how to make a code that matches them.”
“Then why not just let them write their own hermetic code?” Midas asked, as though he was answering a question a bunch of small children were puzzling over. “Sometimes humans spend so long trying to recreate what already exists. Every human is completely unique. Every human is nature’s own hermetic code. It was a happenstance in the past that the nanite code would be similar enough to those guys’ biology that it would form a hermetic code on its own, and they probably ended up modifying their own code enough to detach it from C-Tech’s old database. But what if we just don’t give them a code? What if we just tell them they have to have a code, and let the nanites create one along with their human host? Adopt their biological signature as their own. Completely. Humans have always had a knack for adapting. So why not let them write their own code?”
It sounded too simple to be the actual answer. But that was also part of the reason it made sense. If, following Midas’ logic stemming from the berserker virus being made by humans, and spread because someone essentially took over the control someone else already had over the cyborgs, then it would be easy to explain the apparent accident. It made way more sense to Hesopher than the excuse that it was just a fault with machines that were too intelligent. Machines weren’t intelligent, just obedient. Unquestioningly obedient, and diligent. So in the wrong hands they were definitely destructive instead of helpful. And humans were notorious for being destructive even before the existence of computers.
So if they made sure no one had control but the person the machines were part of?
Hesopher drew a sharp inhale, rising to his feet abruptly enough he caused the chair to tip and thump back to the floor loudly. He wouldn’t agree to it just yet, but it was the first time in years there had been an option that might save his son. “We have to test it first. Not on you,” he relented, feeling his heart melt when Midas gained the most genuine and excited smile he’d seen since he’d been a small child.
“Thanks Dad,” Midas breathed, flinging his hands around Hesopher’s neck to hug him as tightly as his thin arms would let him.
Hesopher’s return hug was much more gentle, wanting to smother his brilliant, stubborn, hopeful son but also not wanting to hurt him. They wouldn’t be able to ask for help, and wouldn’t be able to tell anyone what they were planning. It wasn’t like C-Tech had given up their hold on cybernetic technology after all. On the surface C-Tech claimed a worldwide ban on even the theoretical research of human integrated cybernetics. Forcing those who studied critical parts of similar studies to be registered in their database. There were even cases of people being executed for getting on C-tech’s bad side. It was risky, and if they succeeded he and Midas might end up exiled from Eutoli. But that was worth it to Hesopher if it meant keeping Midas alive, and being able to make him healthy enough to live a life outside of a hospital room.

I dont think its THAT complex
There is an odd conception in psychology that "the human mind is SO UTTERLY complex that it is not possible to give any advice".
Personally I think that is both untrue and unhelpful.
Firstly, yes the human mind is very complex. But so are a lot of other things. Launching rockets to Mars is complex. Figuring out how to build a bridge that will last a century is complex. Designing a giant piece of software that will connect you to the rest of the world is complex. Bear in mind that there is no objective measure of complexity in these fields. It is really not possible to say with definitive certainty that building a nuclear submarine is more complex than fine tuning a lithography machine. So, there is no objective evidence that the human mind is, in fact, infinitely more complex. It is just a vague notion we like to project, perhaps because we dont understand it well. Lack of knowledge is not proof of complexity.
It also does not help to say "every mind is different, nothing works from one to another". Every complex problem in the world is different. When you cook the same recipe on two different days it is bound to be different. When I play a game of chess online that goes beyond 20 moves, it is bound to be a game that has never happened in the history of humanity before. And most directly, no two human bodies are different but that doesnt mean medical doctors throw up their arms saying they cant do anything about anybody. The whole point of science is to find generalizable patterns that do infact apply from one to another.
Believing that human minds are infinitely complex and infinitely different from each other is a great impediment towards actually being able to help someone through the despair & doldrums of mental health. It would lead therapists to never saying anything substantial, claiming that the situation is so unique, so novel, so persnalized, that nothing helpful can be done about this. I am firmly of the opinion that while listening and having someone who listens is valuable, eventually everyone wants a solution to their personal situations and a way out of the mess than just an idle audience.
In my view, one of two things are possible.
Either, you accept that human minds are extremely complex and there is no generalization that allows you to help one person through their distress by reusing previously seen patterns. If that is so, then we have to accept that psychology is not a science (since there is zero generalization), and psychotherapy should not be a valid paid profession (since there is nothing someone can say to help work a way out of a problem).
Or, you have to tone down the catastrophization and recognize that like many difficult problems, the human mind is also a difficult proposition that runs into difficult problems from time to time. And therefore, it should be possible, through trial and error, through discussion and deliberation, through realization and replanning, to find a way through and out of the problem.
What do you believe in?

BACKSTORY !!
wang dohee was born on october 8th, 2002 to a korean mother and korean father. her mother, wang rina (born 1973) is a volunteer worker for homeless shelters around seoul. her father, wang eungyeol (born 1970) is a software engineer currently working in seoul, south korea.
dohee was born in seoul, south korea as the first child in her family. the pregnancy was very rough for her mother, so despite wanting to have more children, dohee remained an only child. only having one child to focus on, dohee became very close with her parents. she considered them her best friends all throughout her school years and was always happy to come home to them at the end of the day. when dohee had to move out to become a trainee, she was very homesick and missed her parents so much even though she would still see them every weekend and they were not even an hour away.
when dohee was two years old, her family moved to boston, usa. they lived there until dohee turned eleven, as her parents were worried about her deteriorating korean skills. dohee excelled at her korean secondary school, being especially good at the sciences and maths, her arts grades were also superb. dohee graduated two years early, skipping both her sixth and ninth grade years. dohee had trouble making friends and experienced some bullying in secondary school due to many issues. because of this, her parents wanted her to explore some of her interests outside of school, thus leading to her joining a local dance crew in january 2014.
FACTS !!
dohee became a trainee in august of 2017.
she used to be able to speak better english than korean but since moving back, that has changed.Â
her parents can speak english well, but dohee is better.Â
after moving back to korea, dohee struggled to make friends and had some bullying issues. so, her parents wanted her to explore her interests outside of school, thus allowing her to join a local dance crew in january 2014.
this dance crew entered lots of competitions where dohee could compete in group routines and as a soloist. this also gave her the chance to try out many different styles of dance.Â
at one of their competitions in july 2017, dohee was scouted by a bighit employee for her hiphop solo.
her favorite styles of dance are hiphop and modern.
dohee is also quite flexible, but she rarely shows off her skills.Â
dohee is ambidextrous.Â
she is musically gifted/a musical genius; having perfect pitch, the ability to sight read, and being able to play many different instruments.
her best instrument is piano, but she is getting better at the flute.Â
dohee was diagnosed with autism and ocd when she was four years old after her parents grew concerned about some behavioral patterns.Â
she does not have any medication for her autism. she has a medication for her ocd which she takes daily.
due to her neurodivergence, dohee has a near photographic memory. she can remember almost any song she’s ever heard, even if it’s for the first time, she can remember any face or name of any person she’s ever met, she is also great with naming movies and tv shows based off of theme songs, casts, quotes, screenshots, etc.
because of her dance background and partly because of her autism, dohee has an insane ability of always being on time while dancing/singing. if a song starts randomly in the middle, she can pick up the choreography and lyrics instantly.Â
her reaction time is also wild!! (like that one video of yeonjun dancing immediately after song starts)
also due to her autism, dohee is a very fast talker. it is natural for her; she’s been like this since she was learning how to talk.Â
with this ability, she was able to become a very skilled rapper.
her favorite colors are pink and blue.
she loves playing minecraft!!!
she also loves story and puzzle-type games.
dohee is a cat person.
her favorite kpop artists are hyunA, seventeen, red velvet, taeyeon, mamamoo, and nct 127.
her favorite western artists are sabrina carpenter, lana del rey, madison beer, selena gomez, and cavetown.
her favorite movie is the lion king.Â
dohee is a huge nerd.Â
she loves the harry potter books.Â
her favorite season is winter.Â
she loves playing in the snow!!
dohee is very in-touch with her inner child.Â
dohee has had an emotional support cat since 2013. she has a somali/fox cat. her name is kyongi!
dohee also has an official service dog which she takes everywhere with her. she has a black labrador called chanho.Â
dohee crochets!!!
she’s also really gay!!!
the boys have said that when dohee sleeps she makes this grumbling sound. she only does it when she moves in her sleep. the boys have many videos of her doing this.
