I think one of the reasons (outside of my great preference for women) that I just don't connect with some of the tumblr sexymen common romance options in Bioware-esque games is that, really often, there's a scene where the game assumes you want to get with Default Guy because you're a woman, and when you say you don't a lot of them get huffy. Anders is the best example of that for me, he's a real bitch when getting turned down that first time so I hold a tremendous grudge for that.

The one I REALLY hate though is Kaidan. I am SO sorry to Kaidan lovers, but the fact that he not only makes a(n admittedly small) stink about it but APPROACHES YOU IN ME3 REGARDLESS OF ROMANCE pisses me off. I mostly romance Liara or Thane, and in either situation it's deeply inappropriate for him to sit down and catch up with me in a public place and go 'what about us?' Like, motherfucker there IS NO US and I have made that clear for THREE GAMES.

I recognize that this is either a writing issue or a programming issue, but it still ticks me off. It'd be one thing if poly relationships happened in these games, but they decidedly don't so it's *not* okay. On that note, honestly I think Larian handles this best in most cases, when you turn someone down in that game, in most cases they're sad but take it well, or confidant enough to say 'your loss' and move on without guilt tripping you. Gale and Wyll are written FANTASTICALLY in this sense. But even that game doesn't necessarily do well with it. Astarion is bitchy about it, but Astarion is always bitchy so he gets a pass. Halsin is REALLY REALLY weird about a romance, but that's partially because it's impossible to not accidentally flirt with him. Kaidan's the same.

Anyway, the point of this post more or less isn't to outline a problem so much as point out how frustrating I find it to be treated as less-than for turning down the go-to man. It's not an issue of me being bitchy about having to feel sad, so much as being put in positions where I turn men down and get a reaction more equivalent to a dudebro calling me a bitch for saying no. I'm a big believer in looking past certain aspects of writing in these games. These characters can't always be best viewed from their full reactionary dialogue. An issue with choice-based games is that it's easy to perform character assassination on a character for a stance they take on a quest, and often these stances are there for a devil's advocate position that doesn't line-up with their character. It's a necessary evil of these kinds of games. I see these situations as similar, I try really hard to look past them, because somebody like Kaidan or Halsin are very sweet otherwise, but it's very hard to. It makes me begrudge the Big Male Romance really often.
