finished up this big ol' boy this weekend at long last. i picked him up right before i started having hip issues, and then when i actually started working on him i realised he was going to require a lot more work than just a quick bath and a plaque. it took many hours of scraping mummified membrane with razor blades and soaking and scraping and soaking to get him sparklingly clean and ready to be hung up, but i was determined to do right by him.

my spouse made the plaque and hanging apparatus for me and has been a big help in finishing this project while i'm still recovering.

i just wish i had a better place to hang this guy up for his full photo…but oh well, you get the point!

For years before Millicent’s death Hux planned on taxidermizing her himself, but when the time finally came around he couldn’t even start. The moment he got his tools to skin her he felt tears in his eyes.

It was a reaction so foreign he hadn’t expected or even considered it. He’d been around death plenty, and none of it had affected him. He had no reason to assume she’d be different. But looking at her body before him, he felt something crush inside him.

He couldn’t help feel he was doing her a disservice when he ended up commissioning someone else to taxidermy her—he should’ve been the one to do it personally, but he found his hands shaking every time he tried. He never thought he was the kind of person to be incapacitated by grief. Nobody told him it was such an embarrassing feeling.

Another really cool buck I had the privilege of working on.

Not only are his antlers asymmetrical, but his muzzle veers slightly to (his) left. This is called wry mouth/nose. This was most likely a birth defect, and probably didn’t affect the buck in life, as it’s so subtle I didn’t even notice anything was off until I was taking photos!
